El Verano Pasado: Roger Bracy

This project was basically about what we did this summer, and use what we have learned in class this quarter to express are experiences in the past tense. We had to find photo and explain who was in them, when they were taken, and where were you at. Then decide and make a project reflecting your descriptions of your work.

The descriptions were easy to do because they were of my family which makes it easier to explain.

imovie helped me a lot to make my project look as good as it does. this was also similar to use.

Recording gave me some trouble, trying to make my speech clear and loud was the main difficulty for me.

Peer edits didn't help me as much I did some edits by myself. I think as a class we could do better on critiquing each others work.

How did you apply the SLA Core Values to your project?

Inquiry- we were questioned and we answered “Qué hice el verano pasado”

Research- we found pictures of the past figured out where and when they were taken.

Presentation- I used imovie, added pictures, and voiced over with garageband

Collaborationwe all critiqued all of our projects to make them better.

Reflection- I looked over what I've put out as a final project and feel like I've done a great job with the concept.

I learned to use the passed tense of some Spanish words (basically conjugated)

I also learned more uses of iMovie.

What I would do differently is go through and edit twice and make sure different eyes see my work, so it's not only me critiquing my work.

I did enjoy this project because of the process I felt it was a good beginning benchmark for the start of the year.

Lobbying Blog Part Two: Public Officials

Someone who represents me and my lobbying topic is Ms. Maria D. Quiñones-Sánchez.
MDQSLG

She is the vice-chair of the committee on streets and services of Philadelphia. Her responsibility is to help keep the streets, bridges, alleyways, driveways, and the roads clean and free of garbage. “All matters relating to the surveying functions of the city.”

In the past, as it has been researched there has been a bill that was passed by the Mayor on October 21st, of 2009 that has been sponsored by Ms. Maria D. Quiñones-Sánchez. Which is bill that amends the provisions of Philadelphia’s code regulating dumpsters. The bill describing that dumpsters need to be in licensed areas, kept well painted, and etc. The link to the PDF version of the enacted bill 090123-AAA is here. https://docs.google.com/a/scienceleadership.org/viewer?url=http://legislation.phila.gov/attachments/9251.pdf

I currently live in the Seventh District of Philadelphia in which is the District that Ms. Maria D. Quiñones-Sánchez is the democratic council member of. http://citymaps10.phila.gov/Map/default.aspx?&SA_PLANNING_2000Councilmanic=on

A streets department program called “Philly Spring Clean Up” was started in 2008 and the even was most definitely a great event. The turn out was amazing, so for the past four years there has been annual events where Philadelphians help clean up around April. In 2010, for the Philly Spring Clean Up event, Mr. Jason Dawkins from Mr. Ms. Maria D. Quiñones-Sánchez has acted as project coordinator  to organize  volunteers for the event. Within the Philly Spring Clean Up, the Philadelphians that are resided help de-weed, clean up parks,  remove debris from areas, repair benches, help paint and etc. In 2008, it was confirmed by ‘Keep America Beautiful’ that the Philly Spring Clean up event for the single day had the largest city-wide clean up on record. Ever since there has been this amazing event that happens in the spring to help the beautification of Philadelphia. Being as though Ms. Maria D. Quiñones-Sánchez is in the help of beautifying Philadelphia, I feel as though she is a great person who represents me and my lobbying topic.

Reflection

The point of this project is to learn how to pronounce spanish, and how to apply it in a creative way. In this project, the sla values were applied by my process, how I researched, then, how I presented it. I learned preterites, and how to pronounce them. At one point in the project, when I did the voice overs, everything just worked, which was very good. I would maybe add a few more pictures, or maybe even add more captions to the pictures. I very much enjoyed this project, because it did teach me a lot.

Lobbying Blop Post #2 - Federal Election Campaign Contribution Regulation

Financial reform on election campaigns has been active since 1907. Over the years, different acts were passed in order to regulate and ban certain lobbyist contributions, and these were all consolidated into the Federal Election Campaign Act in 1971. However, between 2007 and 2010, there were three cases in which the Federal Election Commission (FEC) was taken to court. On the last case, Citizens United v. FEC, the Supreme Court ruled that banning contributions from corporations and lobbyists violated their Constitutional right to “political free speech.” This ruling then led to the DISCLOSURE Act. Now, the question is not whether to ban lobbyist contributions, but how should these contributions be regulated? I researched people in politics that directly represent me about their positions on finance reform and regulation on election campaign contributions. Living in Congressional District 1 of Pennsylvania, I am represented by Representative Robert Brady, Senator Robert Casey Jr., and Senator Patrick Toomey.

Robert Brady was sworn into office for his 8th term representing Pennsylvania’s First Congressional District on January 5, 2011. He is a Democrat, born and raised in Philadelphia, and graduated from St. Thomas High School. He currently serves as Ranking Member of the Committee on House Administration, helping to lead the Committee’s oversight of federal elections and budget authorizations for expenses of House committees. He has consistently advocated for legislation that supports the well-being of financially disadvantaged communities. So, how has he voted in the past on financial reform on election campaign contributions? Over the years, he has consistently voted in favor of regulation on lobbyist contributions and soft money. He voted yes on campaign reform banning soft-money contributions and on requiring lobbyist disclosure of bundled donations, helping to clear up some of secrecy that goes on with campaign contributions. He also supported criminalizing false or deceptive information about elections. This is helpful to me since it seems as though, despite having accepted contributions from several individuals along with corporations and lobbyist groups, Representative Brady is in favor of at least regulating these contributions and making sure they are fair and lawful.

Robert Casey Jr. is  Democrat, born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and  joined the Senate in 2007. Since becoming a Senator, Senator Casey has definitely been focused on the people. He has consistently worked to help turn around the economic crisis, and voted on tax cuts to help businesses hire more employees. He has also worked on several areas of reform such as Health Care reform. And, such as with Rep. Brady, Senator Casey voted yes on requiring more public lobbyist financial disclosure. He has also accepted lobbyist contributions in past and was quoted as saying, “I’ve accepted money from lobbyists. The question is what impact does that money have on our vote. Everyone who knows me knows that I’m very independent. I’ll be focused on needs of Pennsylvanians – not special interests in D.C.” This statement and his vote for more lobbyist disclosure leads me to believe that his position is the same as Rep. Brady in the sense that supports regulation on lobbyist contributions. He believes that the money should not get in the way of what people in government vote and decide on.

Patrick Toomey serves along side Senator Casey and is a Republican. Unlike Senator Casey and Rep. Brady, Senator Toomey was not born in Pennsylvania, but Rhode Island instead. He just joined the Senate this January, and I can actually remember his several campaign commercials that aired during his election process. He has taken a position in favor of restoring fiscal discipline to Washington and economic opportunity for all Americans and has worked for such position. However, his position of federal election campaign contribution reform has not been as consistent. In September of 1999, he was against banning soft money and issue ads. Then, in July of 2001, he voted yes of banning soft money donations to national political parties. But, voted against just that in February of 2002. So, it is a little hard to tell where Senator Toomey is coming from. He, too, has accepted contributions from corporations and lobbyists, along with my other representatives. Senator Toomey still requires a little more looking into.

So, based off of this information I have gathered on my three representatives, Rep. Brady and Senator Casey seem to be the ones I should contact and discuss further on regulation on lobbyist contributions in government. Rep. Brady, being from Philadelphia, seems to have the background most in common with myself, though Senator Casey does not seem to be all that much different. I would probably only contact Senator Toomey just to understand his most current position on regulations, though I will not focus a little less on him. All in all, Representative Brady seems to be my closest bet in favor of my lobbying case.

The Triangles on Greys Ferry Gateway Project: District Representatives

The process of this Gateway Project has gotten attention in the past and also made slight progress in advancing Greys Ferry. A earlier meeting conducted on March 29th with two State Representatives Babette Josephs and Terri Paone. Both from the Council President’s Anna Verna’s office.

The area that concerns my lobbying topic is of the 2nd District run by the Council President Anna Verna. She has been in office for 9 terms. Verna was seen as a main asset to fixing Philadelphia’s financial problem. In her Anna Verna’s description on the City Councils website she seems to be more in house renovations, financial debts, and business taxes. Not so much for city street reconstruction. Then again Verna’s district consist of all of Center City, South and Southwest Philadelphia. And not to mention, again, that she is the President of City Council. There must be a lot on her to do list for her to tend to three triangles on Greys Ferry.

Of the two State Representatives, Babette Josephs was the more distinguished government official than Terri Paone. As I was browsing her site Babette looks like more of a people person.

Someone that represents me and my lobbying topic is Council Woman Joan L. Krajewski. My lobbying case under education reform has many parts aside from education itself. One of the most important point for me was school safety and I found that Mrs.Krajewski is the Vice-chairwoman of the public safety committee,  "She sits on the Committees of Public Property and Public Works, Licenses and Inspections, Public Safety, Fiscal Stability, Legislative Oversight and Disabled and Handicapped. She was first elected councilwoman in 1979 and has since continued on  a similar path. She was the first woman in Philadelphia City Council history to hold the position of Majority Leader. I also found out that she grew up in the same neighborhood as me and I found that very interesting.

Lobbying Blog #2

Video
For my lobbying project I chose the curfew laws and since I want this to be an important thing and taking seriously I have decided to have my official be Mayor Nutter. He has enforced the laws and I figure if I can make him understand my points then he can help make everyone else understand them as well. Even though he doesn't totally directly represent me I feel as though he still can be an official of mine. Once he realizes that not every group of young adults are doing bad then he can show everyone else just like he did when he believed that something needed to be doen to stop them.
Mayor Nutter has voted that different age groups should have different curfew hours in certain parts of the city. But he hasn't gave any thought into the young adults that just want to have fun and not hurt anyone. But he does agree that what they are doing is ridiculous. He wants equality and a safe environment for every one just like me but I feel as though his votes on this thing are not fair to every one.

Lobbying part 2

My official that I found who supports my lobbying topic is Mayor Nutter. He had made a speech about what he thinks about children being out after the curfew that he feels should be set. click here to read speech. Speech. He made this speech in August. I used him as my official because he is they city mayor and knows about what needs to be done to make nights out safer and more enjoyable. Events can never be done properly because with no set time for children to be in, the events be ruin by flash mobs.

A quote that he says that is strong to me is when he states, ""When we ignore our young people's needs, when we don't offer job opportunities, when we don't invest in their education or in their future, all of us have failed them." I feel like this quote illustrates why young people feel the need to run the streets but their are no opportunity out here for them.

Monolouge Pipeline

Into:

I want to show my point of view as a single mother that has 3 children on how I feel about the oil pipelines and the effect that it my have on not only my family but but community as well. I want people to know how I feel about and hopefully it will make a difference. I wanted to raise the importances of how dangerous that this can be and the health hazards that it can cause.

Monologue 1:

(Setting: In the kitchen making dinner for the kids but you have a lot of things on your mind. After they eat, they get ready for bed)

My name is Kimberly Williams. Well, people call me “Kim” for short. I am 36 years old and I’m a long term resident, living in Fort Chipewyan, Canada. I’m a single woman. Have three children. Two sons and one daughter. I’m in trying to make dinner for them, and get them ready for bed, but so much is going on right now. But anyways “Am I married?” Well, no. Divorced actually. I’m more so married to the environment now, if that’s how you want to put it. The trees, the plants, the bugs, water…yeah, that’s all-important to me. “Kids come down for dinner!” (pacing back and forth shakes head) A lot of my family worked in the oil industry. My mom has worked in the oil industry for years, so it has been a big role in my family. I have always been vocal in my community and always a voice about the tar sands industry. I will always call Fort Chipewyan my home, despite of the situations. Me, well, I believe that my kids and I are being jeopardized by this. (leaning against the counter). You know, my kids love to swim in the lake near the house, but now…one of the hardest things to tell them is no because as a mother, I fear for my children, and I am afraid of what is in that water. When I was little, in 1970, there was an oil spill that only a few people knew about. As I was walking along the beaches, I saw a bird covered in oil and GUESS WHAT?? People were still swimming. I know, (acting surprised) it was mind-boggling. Now, what would you have done, if you saw birds covered in oil? Cause, I know that if I saw a bird covered in oil, I wouldn’t allow my kids to swim. The waterfront where we used to dive off the dock into the water has no water anymore. It’s bone dry. (pulls out the salt and pepper for dinner) The water levels are low and the flood lakes are not flooding. You know what my main question is (confused) “Where are the people that are responsible for this? This community is very close and everyone knows each other so if anything would happen, we would automatically know about it. We have meetings about the tar sands and we are speaking out against them. I just want the industry to take another look at this and realize that what they are doing is not right. Yeah, it’s hurting us and possibly killing us. Like I said I’m 36 years old and I want to continue to raise my kids and see them grow. (trying to hold back tears) My neighbor told me something and it was really true, now that I think about it. She said, “Everyone always thinks about the next dollar but in reality, we need to take time to develop something better than what we have.” Come on kids! Hurry so ya’ll can get into bed early for tomorrow. You can’t possibly tell me that there isn’t a better way.

Monologue 2:

(Setting: Outside cutting wood)

Hi, my name is Mike. Mike Daniels that is. I’m 45 years old, married, and have 2 kids. I live in Winsboro Texas. I am also a carpenter. As you can see, I am building this new tree house. Well, I’ve been one for years now. I fell in love with the community for its beauty and nature. Later on, I purchased the spot that I liked, and later on, got married to my beautiful wife, started building my house, and later down the line, I had my 2 wonderful kids, Mike Jr. and Melissa. I own 20 acres of land with spring fed creeks, and hardwoods. (puts wood down) Now look. It’s about to be destroyed by this stupid oil pipeline. My property now, is being threatened because they now want to run the pipelines through my grounds. MY GROUNDS! The Canadian oil company, TransCanada wants to run the Keystone XL pipeline through the heart of the community. But here’s the bad part. The pipeline carries the most dirties oil in the world and it can really harm myself, as well as my family. I don’t want them to get sick ad possibly die. “Hold up where is my wood?” (looking around for it)…oh there it is. Anyways, really, I didn’t know anything about this “project” that they were talking about doing until my next door neighbor came and told me that she had caught surveyors on my property. So I do some research about it and when I got home, I found all these stakes coming up from the ground all around my property. I was so confused. As the weeks go by, my wife told me that she had received some mail stating a request for looking at my property. I thought it was kind of to late for that being as though there were already stakes up coming out of the ground. (laughs a little) I don’t know what they were going to do. Now look, I love this place and I would die in this place. So I refused to give them the permission to make any more moves. Two months later, I received another letter from the Houston attorney saying that if we didn’t respond within a week, then they would have domain over the property and come anyhow and take me to court. But who are they to tell me what I can and cannot do? At this point, I just don’t know what to do. So I wrote them back telling them that they can come and do what needs to be done, as long as I have a 24hr notice that they are on my property. I watch them do what needs to be done and all but wait…I found out something that was very surprising. I talked to Harry Balswind from Nebraska University and he said that TransCanada did not have a presidential permit and that the EPA was not approved. So wait? I’m thinking to myself, “What was all that for then? Look, I was so mad (cuts wood really hard). Pres. Barack Obama needs to know that having these pipelines are not cool. I have a life to live and so does my family. Having them hasn’t proved anything for our best interest and neither has it created jobs for people to work. You have to treat the landowners with respect and they need to stop with all of the lies. Just tell the truth. Safety should always come first. I think I should stop now and check on my kids.

 Monologue 3:

My name is Victoria Meadows. My husband and me have been living in Channelview Texas for a while now. We both are business owners of a motorcycle repair shop. Were we live, is not far from the San Jacinto River so other oil and gas companies like ExxonMobil, Shell, and Chevron ship petroleum. Unfortunately, those type of companies pollute the are with toxins and most of the community is effected with the chance of having cancer. I am one that is active in my community and I am apart of a group called The Fight Against Pollution. We come together and think of ideas of trying to stop the air pollution and Channelview and make it a better place to live. (concerned)My community has struggled so much in the past 4 years and it’s our job as a community to stop the XL pipelines from coming through the grounds. In 1989, Shell oil blew up and it killed a lot of people and also polluted the air very bad. Uhh …what else happened? Oh, in the early 90’s there was an explosion. I can’t remember where it was though. Uh, Let’s see. The river flooded in 1994 but a lot of the oil companies refused to cut of their lines because of the pipelines that had exploded. So with all of that happening, you mean to tell me that you want XL PIPELINES RUNNING THROUGH OUR LAND?? Okay, I get it. You just want to hurt us even the more (getting mad) I don’t think it fair, Not only to me, but to all of the other families living here. This has to be the nastiest oil that we would be having if they still do decide to bring it to us. This is a really bad idea and they need to not follow through it. A lot of people ask me, (sarcastic voice) “Why do you live here?” It gets annoying after a while but I just say because I was born here. All of my memories were created here and I met my husband here. It will be like leaving a place where I spent my life. I don’t think it would be a good idea if I moved and let everyone suffer instead of trying to make a difference and helping my fellow peers and neighbors.

Lobbying part 2- Curfews

The person who represents me in district 13 is Allyson Schwartz. She was born in Queens, New York. She was elected in 1990, as the Pennsylvania State Senate for northeast Philadelphia. She has not voted on the curfew law. Her biggest task is healthcare, but she is also working on: Economy and Jobs
Fiscal Responsibility
Building Livable Communities
Crime and Law Enforcement
Defense
Education
Energy
Environment
Foreign Affairs
Labor
Pennsylvania Specific Issues
Seniors
Taxes
Veterans

imgres
imgres
But Frank Dicocco of district 1, voted for the curfew. I disagree with his theory of making curfew stricter completely, he says they are brought on specifically for flash mobs. The should a better reason for creating this curfew. He should have taken a more stricter turn for the parents, they are the overall solution to this problem.

Writing the descriptions was pretty easy for me because I knew what I wanted to say so I just had to get it down on paper.

Putting everything together was easy for me  because I don’t really have a problem with
imovie.

I had the most problems doing the recording because sometimes when I recorded it didn’t sound like me, so I kept redoing it because I though it might seem like someone else did it. The peer edits were also a little frustrating because I got somethings which turned out not to be correct and it would confuse me.

How did you apply the SLA core values to your project?

I was asked the question and answered “Qué hice el verano pasado”
I researched what I did in summers past and looked for pictures.
I had people review what I wrote and I also reviewed other people’s writing
I put my whole project into an imovie and added music to make it more fun in the silent spots inbetween voiceovers
I looked over my project and am doing this questions, when I looked over it I think I did a good job and I tried my hardest

What did you learn about Spanish through completing this project?

I learned that there were a lot of things that needed to be said in past tense and also I leaned things about transition in sentences that I forgot over the summer.

What did you change about your final project based on peer feedback?  What did you change based on Srta. G’s feedback?

I wouldn’t want to change anything because I feel like I did good. The only thing I would change is to find a spanish verison of the song I used.

If you had the opportunity to start your project all over again, how would you do it differently?

I wouldn’t do it differently, I didn’t get stressed from this project and I completed everything on time

Did you enjoy this project? Why or why not?

Yes, because it was fun and creative, it opened a chance to have something creative in a project instead of just text

Do you have any suggestions for me if I do this same project next year?

No, I think this project was great the way it was. it didn’t confuse me and we had enough time for everything.

Blog Post #2: Lobbying against curfew: Representative

I am still against curfew, I'm represented by Maria D. Quinones-Sanchez from the 7th district. She represents the 7th district, she is known as the first Latina to serve in the Philadelphia city council. I am going to figure out her thoughts on my lobbying topic, curfew. She was born November 12 in Philadelphia, PA. She is married with 2 kids. She has been in office since 2008 till 2012. She had a high of, 80% of votes November 6 of 2007. She was guaranteed a 4 year term.
In the past "Cyber Action" has completely disagreed with the curfew law that was set. This group in particular is basically setting a goal making sure everyone in the community is trying to get the council members to not agree with the law at stake about curfew. It seems as though council woman Maria D. Quinones-Sanchez was agreeing with the law that was being made about curfew. I believe that she is for the curfews and that she is not about to stand down in any way to make the curfew law, out.
It's ironic how she is Latina and I am also. Yet I feel we have nothing in common. I noticed she had done some pretty outstanding things in her time such as; focus on education throughout the city, focus on crime and public safety etc; her accomplishments are in a way similar to my community service. I help around the neighborhood and volunteer at the PSPCA. We both have a connection where we both interact with the community in a positive way.
A little more about Maria D. Quinones-Sanchez:
- She is from the 7th district
-  The youngest in city council
-  Known for her reduced crime rates
-  Known for her increase in economic opportunity
-  Known for outstanding achievements
-  Made history November 2007 by having 80% of votes and being Latina

I would need to get in contact with each individual person or program to find out more information specifically with why after school sport programs are failing and why Philadelphia after school sport programs are failing and what needs to be done to get more of these programs and what these officials are doing to get bills passed and other things passed to bring these necessary programs back. I will also try to go to different sites that have been shutdown and talk to those people about what can be done; I will also talk with students and kids that have lost these sports programs and how they feel about losing them as well.

: Lobbying Assignment #2 - Researching Officials -

Chaka Fattah was a resident of Philadelphia Pennsylvania and attended Overbrook High and eventually went on to Community College of Philadelphia.  He got his MGA from U-PENN’s Fels institute of Government. Fattah first served in the House of Representatives in 1983 until 1988 and then as a State Senator from 1988 to 1994.

Chaka Fattah has stood up for some what I believe would be good initiatives. One of my favorites would be the Clean Energy Act of 2010. However it seems like he is mostly involved in students and student education which is understandable considering his background and where he was taught. Most of his “Major Achievements” has a lot to do with education and some of his other achievements has a lot to do with energy efficiency.

To relate to Chaka Fattah I would attempt to relate on on a level of what I feel about education and I respect that he is very involved with education because that is the key to the future and keeping these young people off the streets. The government takes money away from our schools and the sports teams and don’t realize that sports and after school programs give children something to do. I think he would respect where I’m from and what school I go to and all of the things I am involved with and that would give me a great impression and something to connect on.

From there it could be a nice transition to energy efficiency and how I worked at the EPA. From there I would go into the whole fracking thing and talk about the effects of that in the waters and how water relates a lot to energy and it’s efficiency. Without water there is no life and I would also talk about how fracking is horribly regulated an something should be changed about that. He has a good history with wanting to switch ways in which we use energy.

Curfew Lobbying Blog Post #2

There are various council members here in Philadelphia, ten to be exact for the ten different districts. Those who represents my lobbying topic would be those who’s on the Rules Committee.  The chair of this committee is Anna C. Vera, the vice chair is James F. Kenny and there are seven members who consist of Darrell L. Clarke, Frank DiCicco, W. Wilson Goode, Jr., William K. Greenlee, Donna Reed Miller, Blondell Reynolds Brown and Frank Rizzo Jr.  I’m sure I wouldn’t need to talk to all of these people so I would first start with Anna C. Vera because she seems to have the most experience on this committiee.  In 2008 she was beginning her THIRD FULL term as council president which shows she must be really good at her job. Anna represents the 2nd district and her community interest is more so with housing. Because she seems to only oversee the Rules Committee more so than actual perform the same jobs as the council members, more than likely, I would be redirected to a council member who could represent me and my lobbying ideas.

Or if you’re going out to party at a club and outside is hot and inside is much hotter you’re not going to wear something thick or bolcky. So I am going to help you know the weather like the back of your hand.

Quarter 1 Creative Project

Reflection

A clear explanation of what your creative piece is about, what it represents, and how you attempted to get the point across.

My creative I chose to do a poem because it was a form of art that I felt most confortable doing and presenting. After reading the scarlet letter watching the Juno, it seem that the characters acted/felt one-way and said something different. The poems were basically the inner thoughts that were not said in the movie and/or text. I didn’t try to disguise it I just said it plain and simple.

How you went about crafting your piece. What was your process like? Did you encounter any problems/issues as you went along?

In class we talk a lot about what characters dialogue. We specifically examined what they said with their mouths vs. what they said with their body language. We noticed that what they said didn’t always match up with what they felt and/or thought. So with that, I kept each main character from Juno and the scarlet letter came up with a theme for their feelings/thought. Then I linked two from each that hand similar themes. For example, the theme I came up with for bleaker was about concealed emotions. Then I went about coming up with the poems because I already knew what I want to write. I just put it all in a powerpoint. The pictures chosen behind the text were silhouette because you can see them but not their entire identity just like in the character's thoughts.

What are the aspects of the project you believe you did well?

I believe I the part of the project I did well was the preparation and application. I believe it was because we were told about the project before hand and shown examples of other projects. I just knew what I wanted to talk because it was a topic that stayed in the classroom for a while. When were told we were doing a creative project, I thought poetry. My project just took off from there.

What aspects of the project do you feel you could have done better?

I feel as if the creativity level should have been way higher. Compared to other people’s ideas I don't feel like my Project was that creative.  On the other hand I also do not believe I could have shown much more creativity in my poems. I knew what I wanted and when I was finished I thought about what everyone else said they were doing and I felt as if my project wasn’t up to par.

If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently?

If I had another chance or more time, I would not have did something completely different but I would have added something to it. I would have tried to make a sculpture or did a drawling representing the theme of each poem and/or person.

Public Officials Help with Stem Cell Research

I am a proud South Philadelphian and my house is located in the 2nd Congressional District of Philadelphia, which is represented by

Democratic Congressman Chaka Fattah.

 110405_fattah_376

Before, we go into Chaka Fattah and his policies here's some quick information about him:

-Born on November 21, 1956.
-First assumed office on January 4, 1983.
-Served as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from the 192nd district from 1983 - 1988.
-Served as a member of the Pennsylvania Senate from the 7th district from 1989 - 1994.
-CURRENTLY member of the U.S. House of Representatives from PA's 2nd district since January 3, 1995.
Fattah's Community Interests/Policy Initiatives:
-One of his major contributions was his Communities Commited To College (H.R. 1579). This "provides a 50% tax credit to donors who contribute to “qualifying scholarship trusts” which are partnerships between local school districts and community based organizations. (from http://1.usa.gov/rP4dHA
-Student Bill of Rights (H.R. 1295) makes public schools more valuable by assuring that highly effective teachers work there, early childhood education is started, and theres a college preparatory curriculum.
More policies can be found here : http://1.usa.gov/rP4dHA

Now, when it comes to my main point, and what I'm lobbying for - More federal funding for medical stem-cell research - Chaka Fattah is a complete supporter. In fact, Chaka Fattah has voted IN FAVOR of 6 different stem cell research enhancement acts including:
-Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act (2005)
-Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Act of 2005
-The Alternative Pluripotent Stem Cell Therapies Enhancement Act (2006)
-Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005 (voting in 2006 to overturn Bush's veto against stem cell research)
-Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007
-Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007 (once more before Bush vetoed against again)
Data from : http://bit.ly/rZKurc

It is safe to say that Chaka Fattah is in favor of stem-cell research and definitely believes in all of its potential medical benefits, similarly to the way I look at the future of stem-cell's usage in the medical science field.
More Fattah info here : http://bit.ly/cCa1cMhttp://1.usa.gov/aI4IFi

A member of the U.S. Congress who is one of the most influential bill creator when it comes to stem-cell research is congresswoman Republican Diana DeGette of Colorado's 1st Congressional District.

DianaDegette

More about Diana Degette here. http://degette.house.gov/

Diana DeGette sponsored the Stem Cell Research Advancement Act of 2011 (H.R. 2376). This bill was introduced on June 23, 2011 but has not yet been passed by the House, therefore; it has not reached the Senate nor the President (Obama). This bill calls for the Secretary of Health and Human Services to conduct stem-cell research as long as the stated requirements are met. The requirements often change but these are the summarized requirements for the 2011 Act.
-the stem cells have been donated to the vitro fertilization clinics
-determined that the embryos couldn't be used in any female and were going to be discarded.
-individuals that donated embryos have signed required papers.
-keeps the Secretary of HHS "from using any funds for the conduct or support of human cloning."
More details can be found here: http://bit.ly/t6zoOz

Both of these public officials share common viewpoints with me when it comes to stem-cell research and some of their other acts/policies. There is no doubt in my mind that Fattah will continue to vote in favor for Stem Cell Research Enhancement Acts as will DeGette. I hope that they continue to advocate for the advancement of stem-cell research due to the medical breakthroughs that can potentially result from their support and advocations.

I think I used my language skills very well and was loud and clear enough. I also thought it was pretty cool that i had music playing in the background

I wasnt very organized and i didnt do everything in the same order as everyone else so even though i had something i didnt have what was wanted specifically and that messed me up.

How did you apply the SLA core values to your project?
I didnt really use inquiry but i researched alot of summers from my past and i think i gave a pretty good presentation. Collaboration was big too, because we had to rely on others to peer edit.

What did you learn about Spanish through completing this project?
I learned a lot about watching my sentence structure and making sure the spelling is right. A lot of words that I thought had accents really did not.

What did you change about your final project based on peer feedback?  What did you change based on Srta. G’s feedback?

If you had the opportunity to start your project all over again, how would you do it differently?
I would start it the same as everyone else so I could actually get a better process grade on it instead of doing it in different orders and  having my process grade suck.

Did you enjoy this project? Why or why not?
I thought it was cool. Its going to be interesting to see some of these and see students when they were younger.

Do you have any suggestions for me if I do this same project next year?
I would just take a little longer to explain what exactly you want first next etc, I dont really feel like you explained that too well, or you could just get rid of that all together and just make a checklist that they could do in any order because in my opinion that just works so much better then just telling kids what to do when to do it on a creative project.

Lobbying Topic - Solar Energy #2

I put in some time researching the city officials that are in favor of implementing clean energy all over the city. I immediately stumbled across the Philadelphia Government Mayor's Office of Sustainability. It is a website devoted to Mayor Nutter's plans on making the city the number one clean city of the world. This included the Solar city partnership page. A pretty small page for something that's supposed to represent the entire city, or at least that's what i think. So i dug deeper and found the Greenwork Energy Word Press. Again it talks about Mayor Nutter and also other local and federal officials who celebrate the installation of the solar PV at the water pollution center. After digging a bit more I uncovered a handful of Facility Plant and Utilities Owners are in favor of green energy to their facilities. But few think about the surrounding cities itself. It was even claimed that the Philadelphia Water Department's Solar array could fuel 28 homes a year. Interesting. So i plan on contacting Nutter or even a secretary if possible and talk about our common interests in helping out the city. You know, the stuff that can't be found online.
