Saber Entertainment: Sean McAnich and Antonio Reveron

Posted by Antonio Reveron in PHYS-010 on

Artist Statement

This idea was Sean's. Sean started a business idea primarily about videogames. This company came to be known as Saber Entertainment. I happened to join Saber as my ILP, and it has been great. The business has potential. Now back to the matter at hand. Sean proposed that we would make the Saber Entertainment logo for the project. The Saber Entertainment logo is a shield with SE on the front and two sabers crossed behind it. Sabers are curved, bulky swords, just in case people needed to know what a saber is.

Now, it's time to go into detail of what Sean proposed. We would have three bulbs, two at the ends of each hilt (the end of a sword), and a bulb up top, in the middle. Thus, we made a parallel circuit. We would cut two holes, and have two wires at perfect distance to match up with the 9-volt battery. We would then make a key with a 9-volt battery in it. The key would have SE at the end of it. We put the battery in the key, the key will have wires, and when the wires touch the wires in the shield, they will light up. However, due to time, we had to make just the shield. We scratched the sabers and the SE at the end of the key. So I could say the hardest thing that happened to us was to build the thing before the one week we had to build was up. It still works. Saber!!! (The key was not finished just yet in the picture.)

The Book - Sarah-Charlotte Brown and Vannary Kom

Posted by Sarah-Charlotte Brown in PHYS-012 on
Artist Statement

We chose to light up a book because Vannary and I both like to read. Reading means a lot to us,  and writing is also very important to me because I want to write novels for a living in the future. We did not want do anything harmful to the book itself, so we decided to create the book out of cardboard and use only the cover. The specific book we used (L.A Candy) did not really have any meaning to us, as it is simply representing any books/novels we read in our lives. Based on the cover design of the book, we decided that we wanted to light up some of the hearts. The white hearts had white lights, and the pink heart had a pink light.

All of the lights did light up, but some are harder to see in the picture because they are dimmer than the rest.

The Gray House and a Flag Pole! by Aaron VanBuren

Posted by Aaron Van-Buren in PHYS-012 on
The reason why I chose to make The Gray House and a Flag Pole because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. In class I saw a block of wood and a wooden stick and thought of a flag pole. From there I started to slowly create a flag pole, I collected the light bulbs and need somewhere to put all my components and I found a small box and that became the gray house. In the picture blow, shows the Gray House and the Flag Pole!

Victoria Odom - Music Lights Up My World

Posted by Victoria Odom in PHYS-009 on
IMG_20121115_163814
For this project we were asked to create a sculptural piece of art that is an electric circuit running off a 9 volt battery. I made a sculpture where music notes light up. I chose to create this because music is major part of my life and has a great impact on who I am as a person today. Music is always there for me when I'm down or even in a great mood. It lights up my world. :)

Bright "S"

Posted by Sean Force in PHYS-009 on

I chose to use an “S” shape for my sculpture for a couple of reasons, the first one was it looked kind of cool originally in the simulator that we were using to do tests.  The second reason was because coincidentally it happened to be able to look like the first letter of my name, my name being Sean.  Especially afterward I am glad that I made it like that because it really does, in my opinion, look pretty cool after it was done.

Twinkle Toes

Posted by Cameron Klales in PHYS-010 on
It was hard to make a physics project that related to me, but I ultimately went with light up shoes. I used to wear the gimmicky blinking shoes you could get at famous footwear, and probably still would if they came is my shoe size. I thought it would be fun to make a pair using circuitry and electrical lights. I am also pace when I need to think so it made sense to put light bulbs on my feet. (like the kind that pop up in cartoons when someone gets an idea.) Ultimately though, I just find the idea of something lighting up when I walk entertaining.
When I designed them, I wanted the toes to be a switch. I didn’t have any particular reason for this I just thought it would be cool. It was the first thing that came to mind when the project was mentioned. It did limit the design of my circuit to a point though, I originally wanted to do parallel circuits, but I had to change it to a series circuit so that it would fit.

Karly and Rose's Project & Artist's Statement

Posted by Karly Bornstein in PHYS-011 on
For our project, Rose and I decided to do a camera. We first had the idea of putting lights inside the hula hoop, but we thought that we be too much and it couldn't be used afterwards. Both of us enjoy photography and Rose just happened to have an old camera in the house that we could take apart. So we figured, let's light up a camera. We had many different ideas of where we wanted everything to light, but we finally came up with an idea. The camera was emptied inside, except for the lens. For the final sculpture, we had a 4 lightbulbs in a series, 2 replacing the flash, and 2 showing in the screen. The switch is the button you press down to take a picture. After all the hard work and planning, we were very happy with the final result.

We decided to make a sword because both me and my partner Nick are really hype about fantasy. Our first plan was to make a logo for the game company I run called Saber Entertainment. But then we found out that the other C.E.O., my friend Sean, was already doing it. So we decided we would make a sword. We put a lot of time and energy into this weapon. We wanted to make something that we could actually use. Once it was complete, we couldn't stop showing it off.

Frisbee Artist Statement

Posted by Ellen To in PHYS-010 on
Artist Statement:

Last Spring, I played for my school’s ultimate Frisbee team and that was one of the best team sports I have ever played on. I am not really a big fan of team sports but my school’s Ultimate Frisbee team really changed that perspective. I learned that not all sports are the same. I always like incorporating my life in my projects so for the Physics Circuit Project; I chose to use a Frisbee as my foundation. When incorporating my partner’s interests, we chose use orange tape because my partner’s favorite color is orange. We both really like the sport that we play outside of school and we wanted to show to the viewers that it is important to stay active…whether it is in a school gym or outside of school. I knew that I wanted the rim of the Frisbee to light up so the players could play the Frisbee at night and not have any trouble finding it when it was lit up. The Frisbee would also look really cool in the air at night or in the dark. I also wanted to make the Frisbee as convenient and functional as possible.
I started my process by drawing out the circuit diagram for the inside of my Frisbee.  In the end, my circuit diagram is in two different sets of series that are parallel to each other. After that, my partner and I drew out the schematics, drilled the holes, and connected the wires to the bulbs and battery. The hardest parts of this whole process were finding the right calculations and finding a switch that worked with our circuit when it was in motion. From this new and improved Frisbee, my partner and I want the viewers and users of the Frisbee to look at the circuit and see the difference in the bulb brightness because of the way they are placed. We also want the viewers and users of the Frisbee to try out our Frisbee and see if it works…but be careful because the bulbs can break!

Below are pictures of my frisbee.

Physics Circuit Project by Taylor Veasley Water Stream

Posted by Taylor Veasley in PHYS-010 on

Artist Statement

It was a beautiful day in April at the outdoor flea market outside of the Eastern State Penitentiary when I first saw it. In the 2 years I had been attending this flea market I had never seen anything like it. It was love at first sight, radiant as it sat on the old creaky side table while its owner argued about prices and worth. It had so much history, someone’s “suitcase”, the box that once held their belongings, held in their nervous, excited palms, sweating with anticipation. I love thinking of the stories behind the person that left me with this object; the solid clink of metal as the gold clasps are undone, the smell of adventures, dreams and people forgotten escaping through the cracks. I believe this is much more than just a box, it once carried someone on a journey.  Whether they were just taking a vacation or running from the CIA makes no difference to me. I now carry my life in it, (though I don’t actually carry it around in my room) it holds everything that I cherish in life. I am creating my own history with it.

This box represents me because it has a certain nomadic presence to it, like at any moment you could fill it up with a few things and just go. Thats how I feel I am, like I could pick up my things and go anywhere that the wind would take me. The lights represent my future. When I open the box and the lights come on it makes me think about my life in the future. I think about the places I want to travel to, the experiences I want to have, the job I want to have, and who I want to become. I also like that the lights will illuminate all of the things that I place in that box that I value. The objects have to do with my present and past which will consequently affect my future.

I love the quote by Lana del Rey, “I belonged to no one who belonged to everyone, who had nothing who wanted everything with a fire for every experience and an obsession for freedom that terrified me to the point that I couldn't even talk about and pushed me to a nomadic point of madness that both dazzled and dizzied me.”  I feel like this box represents the freedom to do anything and go anywhere.

SIDE NOTE: My lights are lighting up but you cannot see them because it is too bright and because of the fabric they are hard to see

Seamus Kirby and Kristi Bezhani Circuits Project

Posted by Seamus Kirby in PHYS-011 on
As we built our model, we notice that art has an enigmatic manner of being incorporated into science. What we thought to be interesting about the art behind this project, is that in a standard piece of art, there are things that cannot be seen, such as possible hidden emotions or the tiniest of details. In science on the other hand, there are also things that cannot be seen, such as electrons, neutrons, protons, etc.. Put the two together and we have many hidden messages that cannot be resolved in the instant. Science, unlike art has theories of the unseeable messages that rationalize what happens in reality based off of logic. But art is much more than a simple theory. With art, there are no accuracies or facts as there are in science, the only thing that matters in art is self and perception. There is never a right or wrong within art, but within science, it is possible for errors to exist. In the scientific world, errors are a negative sign, while in the artistic world, errors are perceived as beautiful of flaw and natural imperfect humanity. We chose to create an earring holder out of forks and spoons, because it combined our interests of food, and jewelry. What makes our earring holder unique is that when the earrings are placed on the holder, all the lights turn on.

Revised 2fer

Posted by Cameron Klales in ENG3-011 on

In today's job market, education is what counts. Having a college degree will make or break a resume. As demand for higher education rises, so does the difficulty of getting it, everyday, colleges are flooded with thousands of applications, the majority of which they must sadly decline. The criteria for acceptance has varied over the years, today it is those with the most attractive background who get accepted. While this is very good for encouraging diversity in the classroom, it is actually a discriminatory act. By only accepting a certain number of students from each category, they are denying students from each category the chance at getting in. Colleges should look at the resume of a student before viewing the name or race, so that there is no bias based on the applicants background.

Discrimination has many different forms. It can manifest it as something open like bigotry, or as something subtle, like ignoring a resume based on a name. Names mean more than most would like to think., they are associated with a certain culture, so if whomever is viewing the name is biased towards that culture, than that applicant will have a difficult time getting into that college.“White names got about one callback per 10 resumes; black names got one per 15. Carries and Kristens had call-back rates of more than 13 percent, but Aisha, Keisha and Tamika got 2.2 percent, 3.8 percent and 5.4 percent, respectively. And having a higher quality resume, featuring more skills and experience, made a white-sounding name 30 percent more likely to elicit a callback, but only 9 percent more likely for black-sounding names.”(Pope) While most would not like to admit it, names that seem “normal” appeal more to the people who look over college resumes. It isn’t just those who have unique or culturally distinctive names that suffer though. Many people associate a name with somebody they know’s personality who shares that name. and any feeling towards them might come out in the review.

Accepting or declining students based on background does more to discriminate than it does to level the playing field. It strips individuals of their story, deciding instead to throw everyone in with their own “huddled mass”. It actually creates a tremendous inequality.

“One definition of racism is the idea that "individuals should be treated differently according to their racial designation." Every February, we do exactly that. I'm not saying that we shouldn't honor these individuals, but we should honor the individual, not because of what color he or she happens to have.”

Like Black History Month, intentionally taking from minorities does not put them on a level playing field when it comes to college applications. What it does do is make it easier for people from one minority to get in over people in another. This kind of prejudice is the greatest burden, especially for minorities who hold the “slacker” label. If  an applicant from one of these minorities makes a screw up, they are thrown back to the “masses”. Having the ability to overlook these differences and being able to look at the student purely based on their resume would mean that applicants who worked hard would have a better chance of getting into college, no matter what their background is. One could argue that by not acknowledging their background of the student, you are still discriminating based on who can afford the best education. This is true to a point, but any educational discrimination would still be reflected based on background.

It is important to understand that discrimination is not always bigotry, It comes in many forms. As a society, we can eliminate prejudice by giving everyone the “blank slate”. Being discriminatory is part of human nature, it is how we decide wether or not someone is a threat.

The mask by micheal hall & joshua melendez

Posted by Joshua Melendez in PHYS-012 on

The reason why me and my partner decided to do the mask was because at the time when we got the project, halloween was approaching. We thought it would be hot if we made the mask look creepier and scarier. We choose to use green and white lights because the eyes and mouth were already dark. We also wanted the eyes and mouth to pop out and be like “BAM”!! Also, we thought it would be cool if the battery was portrayed as the candy in the trick or treat basket, and when you take out the candy, the lights connected to the eyes and mouth would shut off. This is why we chose to do the mask.

My first quarter physics benchmark is a frisbee with lights through the top. I chose a frisbee because it is the sport I play. I feel this represents me because frisbee is a big part of my life. Being able to take something that means a lot to me an incorporate it into a project made me really want to do well. I wanted to make something that I would be proud of and could show my team and family.

Circuit Project + Artist Statement

For my project, I decided to make my lights outline a Mac Apple on my laptop holder. I chose to make a Mac Apple, because at SLA we use laptops everyday. I liked the apple on the Mac laptop, so I thought it would be cool and original to make an apple outside of a laptop holder. On top of our Mac laptop case, there is an apple that glows. I wanted to represent that apple on my laptop holder. I use 6 light bulbs with 3 on each branch. I connected wires in a parallel series.

Aazimah Muhammad- Hanging Mobile

Posted by Aazimah Muhammad in PHYS-012 on

Artist statement

The heart is a symbol, that can mean a lot of things. Personally, I like hearts because they are pretty, and very easy to put your own spin on. However my project is three hearts that will hang down displaying a child’s mobile. I thought about a mobile, because my brother is expecting. Furthermore, when I was younger I used to have a Winnie the Pooh mobile, and I loved it. I though that my new niece or nephew would love it. So I thought about it, and I made it hearts for love. A mobile, that would have hearts and, and create enough light to keep the child company at night. I love hearts, and hearts are a huge part of who I am. I can draw hearts, and have each one mean something. They are peaceful to me, so I planned on making this project peaceful, and happy.

In the beginning, I decided that I wanted my circuit to be bright, and noticeable. Then I changed my mind, and made it peaceful and calm for a child’s room. In doing this, I needed to make the current going through my bulbs, lower than normal so they would appear dimmer. I then needed increase my resistance, so that they current would be lower making my light bulbs dimmer. Also, my circuit uses wires, that connects the light bulbs to each other to make sure that it is a “closed circuit” without it being a closed circuit, the lightbulbs would not work. In the end, the higher the resistance, they lower the current, thus making a dimmer light for a more peaceful setting.

Alisha's Circuit Sculpture & Artist Statement

Posted by Alisha Clark in PHYS-011 on
I picked the design of a child’s costume to light up, because I adore my younger siblings, cousins and family friends. I’m usually the one that watches over the babies and they love to dress up. This is my little cousin's costume of a lady bug. There are three lights on each wing that are centered in the hearts. Within each wing, there is a parallel circuit that runs off two AA batteries. On the sides, there is a green switch. When pressed down upon, it will light up. It is nice to look at and watch as it lights up.

Eric Loth/Zakee Jones "Swag Bag"

This is what we call "Swag Bag". The reason why we choose to create a light up bag, is because, having a nice bag in school makes you feel really good. Having the thought that my bag lights up makes you feel invincible. School is half about having a nice bag and half about getting good grades.

Artist Statement By Robert Jenkins and Helen Kilmartin

Posted by Robert Jenkins in PHYS-012 on

Artist Statement

We choose to create a crayon book using a pencil box that would light up different colors to give the idea that it was many colorful crayons inside of the box. But you would only see the light when you close the box. This is because we placed a switch on the top of the box that is turned on by shutting the box and released once it is opened. We liked this idea that it was simple to create and can be applied to use in the real world. Even after we completed the circuit we found that it was still room to fit actual small pack of crayons into the box. What this design shows about us is that we are creative students looking personal their daily tools that they carry to school each and everyday.
