Othello - Blog 3

I was pretty pleased with our final product and how we presented. As expected, the making of the puppets was fun and although I wanted to do a voice with my puppets I didn't. I think we did a pretty good job on the project and that our theme was evident in our line choice. I think we kept the class engaged in our performance with the puppets and the wa we made them interact with each other.

SO midway through this benchmark is when we really started talking as a group and pulling this play together. The individual line pulling was pretty simple. Getting al the lines and making them into one play that makes sense was hard. Hannah and Sam get most of the credit for that because I really wanted to give up and not do it. It seemed like none of the lines went together and that we were never going to get one solid script done. Eventually, we got a script together that all of us were satisfied with and began thinking of how we were going to present it. We came up with the idea of a puppet show and it really got me interested because I thought the making of the puppets would be fun.

In the beginning, my group assigned each member a part in the book to search for lines. We all had basically the same amount of acts to search through. I, of course, as always, slacked off and didn't get to work right away. This seemed like it wouldn't make that big of a deal at the time but it did. The rest of my group was making pretty good progress and I was glad that I had the members I did. Hannah and Sam were motivations to work, and they helped me et work done and to help Deron get on task.

Teenage Sex & STD's - Post 6

The most common STDs found in Philadelphia teens are gonorrhea and chlamydia. Children as young as 12 have been tested positive for either one or both of these diseases. The rate of chlamydia and gonorrhea among 15-24 year oldsin Philadelphia is well above the national average.

At least one in four girls nationwide has a sexually transmitted disease. The article states that, "A virus that causes cervical cancer is by far the most common sexually transmitted infection in teen girls aged 14 to 19, while the highest overall prevalence is among black girls -- nearly half the blacks studied had at least one STD."

For many, the numbers most likely seem "overwhelming because you're talking about nearly half of the sexually experienced teens at any one time having evidence of an STD," said Dr. Margaret Blythe.

Many teens do not know that vaginal intercourse is not the only way to spread STDs. STDs can be spread the oral intercourse as well. Some teens that have been tested say they haven't had vaginal intercourse, only oral, but they do not realize that they are still at risk of STDs.

Teenage Sex & STD's - Post 5

So the brochures that my change agent sent me were really helpful. Over spring break, a friend of mine got an abortion. I asked her how much it cost, and she said it was only 19 dollars! When I heard that I was surprised, I thought they all cost 300 dollars. As I thought some more about it, I realized why abortion was a lot of peoples first choice, it is a painless process that costs less than a pair of jeans!

I recently read that one in four girls tested have a sexually transmitted disease. The article also says, "Among the teenage girls tested, the study found that 18 percent were infected with human papilloma virus (HPV) - the virus that causes cervical cancer and genital warts - 4 percent were infected with chlamydia, 2.5 percent had trichomoniasis, and 2 percent were infected with herpes simplex virus." the sad part about it is, almost all of these teenagers didn't even know that they were infected. They continue to have unprotected sex and unintentionally spread it to others.

There are limited STDs that are reported back to the Philadelphia Department of Health so it is unsure how many teens have different STDs. The free clinics mostly test for chlamydia and gonorrhea.

Teenage Sex & STD's Reflective Post #4

Okay, so major slacking is killing me. I think I just need to sit down and only have open safari and complete my blog posts. Yesterday, in class I got a portion of my blog done. As the day progressed I completed more of it. I was almost finish it when my safari quit unexpectedly. I was so mad. I think I'm going to start writing in a word document so that my work can be recovered. Sometimes, I just don't understand myself. I know what my issue is and what I should do to correct it, and yet I still don't. It's crazy. My goal is to have all of my past blog posts finished and submitted by midnight on Wednesday.

The funny thing is that I just looked at my last reflective post and in that one I also said that I would begin creating the blog entries in word. Guess it's time to open a word document.

Teenage Sex & STD's Reflective Post #3

So last week I was planning on getting posts 5 &6 up. I was done post 5, ready to hit submit, when my computer froze on me so I had to restart it. Safari didn't save my work, so I got really frustrated and stopped doing it. Now I have to catch up on posts 5 & 6, and do posts 7 & 8 by next Friday. I think I should have just redid it then because now my work is piled up and I still have work in other classes.

On a more successful note, I emailed my change agent back because the brochures she sent me wouldn't open on my computer because they were the wrong format, so she said she would mail them to my house. She is very nice woman and is very willing to help me with my project. I have to get my elevator pitch to her so that she can see it and give me feedback. This project is getting easier as we go along, it just gets frustrating when we have distractions or complications like freezing computers.

I think from now on I will type my posts in word so that if I have any technical errors, my work is still saved.

Teenage Sex & STD's - Post 4

Recently, I have been contacted by my change agents. FINALLY THEY HAVE RESPONDED! One, Ms. Judith, seems more interested in helping than the other so I think I'm going to stick with her. She gave me a few really good informational sources.

I have recently read an article about a young woman who became pregnant in her first year of college. She chose to keep the baby and explains how having a baby is not as easy as it looks. All of her social time is gone, and  most of her money goes to her baby. I think if more teenage girls knew what it was like to actually have a baby then they would think twice about unprotected sex. Those girls who think that is cool to have a baby, or those girls that go on Maury talking about they are trying to get pregnant really need to do some research. It is not at all easy to have a baby. Watching my nephew during spring break was proof enough for me. I had him all day for the whole week and it was not easy. The young lady in this article also explains how her figure had gone. She couldn't even fit her old clothes anymore. True Tales of a Teen Mom by Elisa Klein.

I have also found that most states have rejected funding for "abstinence-only"  education. Abstinence-only education is not educating teenagers on the dangers of having sex and the diseases you can catch, but telling them not to have sex at all until marriage. The article, "Preventing Teen Pregnancy:What Works" by Erica Barnett, says, "Studies have shown that abstinence-only education does virtually nothing to prevent kids from having sex; the most recent one, released in April 2007, revealed that about half of all kids in both comprehensive and abstinence-only sex education programs had had sex by the end of the study period, and more than a third of both groups had had two or more partners. The only noticeable difference between the groups was that the abstinence-only group used birth control less frequently."

Research lately has been quite useful. I'm finding more facts, although some of them contradict with others. With this new site, provided by Mr. Chase, I think I will have more concrete facts though. One thing I do need to do is get better with these deadlines. Also, I may have to find more change agents because none of the ones i chose have responded back to me yet. In general, I think the project is getting easier. The blogs aren't as hard to do anymore and it isn't as hard to find websites that aren't "junk". I have to work on my procrastination though. Other than that I think things are going smoothly because when I finally decide that I am going to do work, it is not hard at all. I think my biggest thing is going to be the elevator pitch and the face-to-face meeting with my change agent.
