A-Rob - Vision if School Essay
Submitted by arobinson on Tue, 10/06/2009 - 15:53.
I’m a product of someone else’s vision. I am the outcome of a system that is destined to fail. The current education system, as it is in place, is set up so that a mass number of students get through it in a set amount of years. This to me is a vision of failure. Learning and teaching is not a “one size fits all” kind of program, and therefore needs to be altered. The vision of school should be to teach to people who want to learn. I feel like you learn your basic knowledge in K-8, and think that should be the maximum required time in school. While I feel that high school should still be free, only those that want to be there should be there. Why should knowledge be wasted on those who don’t care for it?
The ability to become a teacher should be a little more rigorous. Each teacher should be dedicated to teaching students and not teaching subjects. Teachers should have at least 3 methods of teaching a subject, so that they can vary between the different learning styles of the students. The classroom should be a learning environment for everyone, teacher and student alike. There should be almost a benevolent dictatorship in each classroom, where everyone’s voice will be heard and everyone’s thoughts count.
This new vision of school would be good for the individual because no one would have to feel inferior to anyone else. Everyone would be able to learn and the atmosphere of the school would be more peaceful. There would be fewer interruptions in classes from the kids that were only there because they had to be. Everyone would be responsible for his or her own learning. This would be good for society because the taxpayers would no longer be paying money to support schools, where the students didn’t appreciate the materials.
I feel as though if the vision of school was changed, and only those that wanted an education would get it, then more people would want to learn. If there were teachers that cared about the students that they were teaching, and everyone was learning together than fewer students would lose interest in class. For example, in elementary school, some kids learned faster than others, and the teacher we had was having a hard time balancing teaching new material with making sure everyone knew the old material. The students who were falling behind couldn’t come afterschool for help because they were having family problems and teacher didn’t really try to make an effort to teach them the material at another time, so the students who fell behind stopped caring about school. They felt like everyone else was smarter than them just because they got a certain topic faster and that student became a disruption to the class because they were so far behind that all they did was joke around. I think that with the new vision of school, equipped with teachers that care about each student, would not allow this to happen. I think that everyone would learn the same material and no student would have to feel like they couldn’t learn. I think that with the new vision, if there were a similar situation as the one above, the teacher would have put forth an effort to get that student up to speed. If the student couldn’t come afterschool, then maybe they could come before, or even at their lunchtime twice a week. I think that there is always a way to make sure someone can learn.
The difference between this school and traditional school would be that these schools would be full of teachers who care and students who want to learn. There would no longer be a need for schools like Masterman and Central because every school would be like Masterman or Central, in the sense that the goal of the building is to prepare students to further their education through higher institutions (college), and not just to get them through the system, in the quickest, most structured way possible. School would not be a prison. Students would be a product of their own vision.

The most common STDs found in Philadelphia teens are gonorrhea and chlamydia. Children as young as 12 have been tested positive for either one or both of these diseases. The rate of chlamydia and gonorrhea among 15-24 year oldsin Philadelphia is well above the national average.
At least one in four girls nationwide has a sexually transmitted disease. The article states that, "A virus that causes cervical cancer is by far the most common sexually transmitted infection in teen girls aged 14 to 19, while the highest overall prevalence is among black girls -- nearly half the blacks studied had at least one STD."
For many, the numbers most likely seem "overwhelming because you're talking about nearly half of the sexually experienced teens at any one time having evidence of an STD," said Dr. Margaret Blythe.
Many teens do not know that vaginal intercourse is not the only way to spread STDs. STDs can be spread the oral intercourse as well. Some teens that have been tested say they haven't had vaginal intercourse, only oral, but they do not realize that they are still at risk of STDs.

Recently, I have been contacted by my change agents. FINALLY THEY HAVE RESPONDED! One, Ms. Judith, seems more interested in helping than the other so I think I'm going to stick with her. She gave me a few really good informational sources.
I have recently read an article about a young woman who became pregnant in her first year of college. She chose to keep the baby and explains how having a baby is not as easy as it looks. All of her social time is gone, and most of her money goes to her baby. I think if more teenage girls knew what it was like to actually have a baby then they would think twice about unprotected sex. Those girls who think that is cool to have a baby, or those girls that go on Maury talking about they are trying to get pregnant really need to do some research. It is not at all easy to have a baby. Watching my nephew during spring break was proof enough for me. I had him all day for the whole week and it was not easy. The young lady in this article also explains how her figure had gone. She couldn't even fit her old clothes anymore. True Tales of a Teen Mom by Elisa Klein.
I have also found that most states have rejected funding for "abstinence-only" education. Abstinence-only education is not educating teenagers on the dangers of having sex and the diseases you can catch, but telling them not to have sex at all until marriage. The article, "Preventing Teen Pregnancy:What Works" by Erica Barnett, says, "Studies have shown that abstinence-only education does virtually nothing to prevent kids from having sex; the most recent one, released in April 2007, revealed that about half of all kids in both comprehensive and abstinence-only sex education programs had had sex by the end of the study period, and more than a third of both groups had had two or more partners. The only noticeable difference between the groups was that the abstinence-only group used birth control less frequently."
