Bill Update___ 11/24/09

US Congress Bill: There hasn't been any recent action. PA State Bill: There hasn't been any recent action. Philadelphia City Council Bill: There hasn't been any recent action. Reflection: The current situation on the health care bill is going okay, I guess. The Health care bill pass the Senate then it's mostly likely going to Senate committee to get another look to reconcile the difference between the two bills. What is happening over the weekend? I don't even know what this last question is referring to.

My Vision of School
Submitted by jcauvin on Mon, 10/12/2009 - 01:03.
While having the chance to read about education and seeing the different views of education from different lenses, I came to my own conclusion of what I think school should be. My vision of school is, school should have a universal theme where change can be allowed for individual progress while at the same time having a common structure/ foundation to allow progress to be measured.
My purpose of school is to maximum a child’s gift. I hear lots of people say, “ he or she has the potential to be this and that in life.” My school vision will not revolve around that common saying but my universal motto of school would be “ experience over potential.” I believe experience over potential is good for an individual for many reasons. One, it allows an individual to discover their place in life. Two, it allows an individual to be more confidante in their gift. Three, it allows an individual to accept new ideas.
Now days we have traditional schools where a formula is formulated to work for all. It’s sad but that’s the way it is, due to many factors like the size of the school and the one thing we can’t control and that thing is time. Time is very important in a child’s development and sometimes development is overlooked due to size of schools, which in returns limits the individual one-on- one time that the child needs for growth. In traditional schools everything is structured to the point where there is no waggle room for any kind of change on an approach that doesn’t work like structured learning, which deprives individual self-discovery. My school would do the opposite. My school would cater to every individual’s needs and also have a tailored curriculum based around the child’s capacity. This would be a good approach because not every child has the same capabilities, so this would allow the child to start off at a level that would be manageable in from there, progress will be able to begin. Like the saying “ before a baby learn show to walk it has to first crawl.” Same concept will be embedded in my school code of learning.
My school would have the three basics: reading, writing, and math. Just for the purpose of basic living, but it will not revolve around the three basics, but my school would revolve more around the child’s interest. For example, if the child shows an interest in music then music would be the main focus around the child’s education or if the child’s interest is in math then the main focus around that child’s education would math. The goal is to focus in on a child’s interest and from that interest evolve that interest into their expertise.
These kids have a chance to be experts in their passion however; it allows them to be more confidantes in their gift. For example, if a child is talking about something they must know what they’re talking about right? Unlike in traditional schools, which don’t give that child, the assurance of knowledgibility (made the word up) my school would offer that assurance. With this assurance the child is going to maximum their gift instead of that so-called “potential” that they had but never reach it because they just didn’t apply themselves. My school is going to produce leaders of society and not followers of society.
Being experts is great in a society because it shows that you know what you’re talking about when it comes to a particular topic or field of study. This also shows that individuals would be more opened to new ideas, which enable them to grow intellectually in society and not stunt the progress of future development. For example, my school wouldn’t produced one main focus for one individual but each individual that has the same interest will have that common main focus but the only thing is that each individual would not start off at the same level of that main focus. This is a good approach because all the individuals are starting from different levels of that one main focus which will allow them to collaborate with one another and even possibly teach one another about a possible wrong approach to a method.
The structure of school when compared to a “traditional” school would be everything that a traditional school isn’t. The structure of school should invest in their students and not more on a curriculum. The purpose of school would be more about helping students reach their proper place in life/society. School should be a place of opportunity that deals with the internal aspect of life to help improve ones-self and that is what my school would offer to every individual.

What makes a good Podcast
Submitted by jcauvin on Thu, 09/11/2008 - 15:28.
what makes a good podcast?
The things you will need to make a good podcast is....
You will need to write questions to ask the interviewee and make
sure the questions have a meaning and do not ask pointless question.
After your done writing the questions go back and think about what your
trying to get from the interview and see if the questions relate to what you
want from the interview.
Next when you meet the interviewee make them feel like their welcome.
Make eye contact with the interviewee.
Finally when your recording have a clear voice if possible keep the same tone
and do not go from high pitch to low pitch keep the same tone.
Have lots of energy and life do not be die.

MY ILP AT STERLIN GLEN
Submitted by jcauvin on Tue, 05/27/2008 - 13:06.
My ILP is at Sterlin Glen Assistant Living. Sterlin Glen is basically a place for Senior that have retired. The senior get to be be independent and do everything on their on unlike a nursing home where the seniors need aid on their daily actives. So far what I did at Sterlin Glen was I would come every Wednesday and help out. Like for example, I would play BINGO with the seniors, I would also help decorate when it’s a holiday like for example Halloween. To conclude what I did was I just help out with the activities. The things that I have learned while being an intern there was that people are very different in many ways, like for example, when you get old you tend to talk a lot and view life and a different way. The seniors there where very surprise when I told them that I went to a high school where all the students had laptops.

Teacher Student Climate # 6
Submitted by jcauvin on Thu, 03/27/2008 - 15:19.
The things that would make my Teacher Student Climate kind of challenging is in Philadelphia there are a couple problems. Like for example, the debt problem the Philadelphia school was facing according to an online article
http://www.budget.state.pa.us/budget/lib/budget/
philadelphia_school_district_report.pdf .
Titled
BUDGET SECRETARY IDENTIFIES CAUSES OF PHILADELPHIA SCHOOL
DISTRICT’S DEFICIT, RECOMMENDS CORRECTIVE ACTION
INCREASED FUNDING, BETTER FISCAL OVERSIGHT BY THE SCHOOL REFORM COMMISSION
NEEDED TO SUSTAIN SCHOOL REFORM IN PHILADELPHIA
That was release of last year of June 4, 2007 that stated their where in a 24 million dollars in deficit after reviewing things and also in danger of experiencing a 192 million dollars shortfall in 2007-2008 school year.
According to Masch “Philadelphia is by far the largest of the state’s 501 school districts. In 2005-06, its 207,856 students accounted for 12 percent of the 1.8 million students in the state’s public schools, the report states. Pittsburgh, the next largest school district, had 32,556 students in 2005-06.”
I think this is troublesome because instead of things turning out good things are worst financially. The reason why I said that is in Philadelphia public schools that have large sum of students that teacher will not to get to know personally. As a result the student will not receive a deceit educational learning environment where the teacher is involved and is active in the child’s learning in order for this to happened more qualified would have to be hired and in order to do that money has to be put out and they do not have the money to put out because they are in debt.
