Language, identity, and code swtiching

The way someone speaks relates to their identity and the way that they’re thinking different ways this is because everyone subconsciously peaks different ways at different times. That belief ties into my thought that everyone has different parts to their identity and language interests with each one of those different parts. Which means that people have a different way of speaking for every characteristic of the personality. In different situations a person will subconsciously decide how they want to speak depending on the situation and what’s going on, this is because they subconsciously know what part of themselves that should be put forth into put into the situation.

One day waiting at the trolley two old women began talking about a teenage mother that came up to wait for the trolley the young woman looked to me for comfort so I had to decide how I wanted to approach the situation. “It was obvious that the young woman noticed their faces and could hear the word they were indirectly directing to her. I looked up at her about the same time she looked at me with a “help me” look in her eyes. I was helpless, there was nothing I could do, say or think to help her with the disapproving and the rude comments of the f these old judgmental women. She came and stood closer to me then a stranger should but I think she knew that and was just using me as I safe place. I looked at her and said “it’s iight don’t worry about them, as long as you happy that’s all that matter.” She responded with a low key “thank you.” I didn’t consciously decide to speak to her the way, it more of a reflect I noticed that she needed hear a friendly voice to get her through whatever it was that she was feeling. So, noticing that I just spoke to her as if we had been friends. My body knew that the friendly part of my identity had to show in order to get the young woman past whatever internal conflict that the old women were putting her trough at the time.

In a more serious situation I wouldn’t have decided to respond in such a friendly and concerned dialect. At times different situation cause serious tones and moods to come about that show concern, seriousness, and mellowness. A child being told that they are failing a class and getting the work that they have missed they have to bring out the more mature and more adult side of their identity because that is a time when it is important to show seriousness and concern. This being because if a student is informed that they are failing a class and need to receive their missed work can’t act nonchalant about it because that’s would leave an impression on the teacher that they truly don’t care about it.

Different situations in life cause everyone to put forth different parts of themselves in order to adapt to the situation that is going on around them. A change in the surroundings of a person will cause for a persons body to subconsciously tell them to change their way of speaking in order to survive in their current environment. This is why I believe that people change the way they speak all the time because in my opinion it’s human nature for people to code switch when speaking to different people. Since people subconsciously do this most of the time they do it without even realizing what it is that they’re doing.

In conclusion, language relates to identity on many different grounds. One of these ways being that your body subconsciously knows how you speak in different situations. The second way being that your language is your identity because it tells where you’ve been and tell a little about what are around. Language relates to identity in more ways then one and these two are just a small portion of these ways.
