Voter Turnout 2009 Election

  1.  My picture is on my laptop desktop, but I currently don't have access to it
  2.  This years election was a lot less interesting than last years presidential election. For one thing there were a lot less people. As a matter of fact, when I went to my local polling place at the Y, there were only two people that I could see in the polls, aside from the workers there. I suppose that since it was kind of a "lesser" election, that could have been the reason. Less people feel motivated to go out to the polls when its just voting for judges and city council members and district attornies, etc. Actually, I spoke with a woman named Janice who worked at the polling place and she told me that most people who do come out to vote don't know much about who or what it is they are voting for. Many people tend to focus only on the bigger elections such as the presidential, governor...al, and mayoral elections. In conclusion: It was dull.

Bill Tracking 10•19•09

Started: September 21, 2009

1) The House bill that I am currently following is house bill 264, and it is called the Save America Comprehensive Immigration Act of 2009. The bill is working in favor immigrants in the United States that have either a) been being sponsored by an American citizen to remain in the country b) have lived in this country for over 5 years and c) are children. The main goal of the bill is to give said aliens the eligibility to attain citizenship or permanent resident status in the United States. The bill also seeks to further protect immigrants from sex-related crimes in the country because, well, everyone should be protected.
    • There really hasn't been much action on this bill since February. The last time anything really happened with it was when it was referred to the Subcommittee on immigration, citizenship, refugees, border security, and international law. Since then there hasn't been much done with that bill.
    • It is hard to imagine that this bill will make it anywhere soon. I say this because it always seems that when they have some sort of bill, act, or idea for reform on immigration something else comes up and takes that attention. Right now it is the countries economy (as well as the economy at a global scale) and the fact that thousands of jobs are being taken away every month, as well as the healthcare reform that's being focused on. There are certain things like that that need an immediate resolve, and so bills that "may not need immediate attention", such as this one will be pushed to the side until there is time and availability to look at them. However, I do think that it's possible that they look over the bill some time near the end of this year, so we'll see.

2) The State house bill that I chose is an Act public school employees and educators in Pennsylvania. The Act works in favor of helping said employees by providing a state-wide health benefits program for them, setting up a retirement health savings plan, and also establishing a employees benefits trust fund for all Pennsylvania public school employees.
    • The last time there was action on this bill was on July 22, 2009 when it was referred to Appropriations. That is not too long ago so perhaps there is hope for this bill, although it can just sit there for a long time.
    • This bill also seems like one that'll be difficult to get off the ground, just because of the fact that money is tight all over the place. I, unfortunately, think that public school teachers and their trust funds are the last things on the minds of our representatives at the moment. They're too busy closing libraries and shutting down schools. But hopefully in a while... a while while... they will consider the bill because public school employees work darn hard and don't get or see half of what they deserve for their work.

3) My City Council Bill is trying to amend Chapter 19-1300 of the Philadelphia Code, about real estate. It is supposed to adjust the requirements for real estate tax exemption for construction/improvement projects  on residential and business properties

• The bill was introduced on March 5, 2009 and is currently in committee (of finance). There will be a meeting to discuss the bill held tomorrow, September 24, 2009 with the city council, so we will see where it goes from there

9•28•09 Reflection

It seems none of my bills are making much progress, which is a little upsetting. I can understand why the House and even State bills may be at a standstill for a while, but the city bill that I have regarding the tax exemption I expected to have some action, whether for or against, on it. While all taxes are being raised and such, it doesn't seem likely for tax exemption for some, although when it comes to construction the situation and approach may be different.

10•05•09 Reflection

I think that all of my bills deal with the rights of people within our country. Aside from that similarity, I think they are very different because they don't deal with

10•12•09 Reflection

The Bills that the legislators are currently concentrating on, that I notice, are ones that have to do with national issues. Right now the big debate is healthcare. We have been weighing out our options for so long.  America is running out of options and money at this point and now the issue is one that is really being emphasized in the media and in the government itself. The rest of the world is pushing towards universal healthcare, and we all acknowledge that our current system just isn't cutting it, but the lawmakers are split in half as to how to solve the issue. So, Healthcare reform is what is being focused on right now, and hopefully what will be figured out in the near future.

10•19•09 Reflection

If I could only have one of my bills pass, I would choose the America Comprehensive Freedom Act, which deals with the immigration situation. I think that I would choose that bill because enough people in our  country for long enough in uncertainty for far too long. There are people who have been in the United Stated for over a decade and still their residential situation is still unclear. It seems almost unfair to leave people hanging like that. We either figure out a way to solve the immigration issue in our country and offer citizenship to such people, or we say "sorry, but you have to go". Either way, we need a solution to this situation because we can not afford to hold off any longer.

Pivot Point Benchmark: Lincoln's assasination

Here is my pivot point in history:

The night of Friday April 14, 1865, at the Ford Theatre, John Wilkes Booth enters President Abraham Lincoln's booth and puts a pistol behind his head with intent to kill. However, Lincoln's bodyguard, John Parker, returns to his post after having left and sees what is about to occur, tackling Booth who, although he pulls the trigger on his gun, misses his target and ends up shooting at air. John Parker takes out John Wilkes Booth and Lincoln and his party are able to leave the scene safe and sound.

Letter To Obama

Dear Soon-to-be President Obama,
First and foremost, congratulations on winning the Presidential election. There is no doubt that this will go down in the books forever and no matter what happens you will have made your mark in history. I look forward to seeing your work and where you take this country in the future under your presidency.

Josette's interview

Josette and Donavan

Josette Greene, mother of an elementary school son named Donovan, came out today to cast her ballot for an election that she thinks will be life changing. The working mother with a voice had a little time to spare to answer some questions that mattered to her.

1.    You are with your young son. Was it at all difficult to have him with you and take off of work to come here and cast your vote?
I’m actually lucky. My job allows me to have pretty flexible hours so I could get out and take care of my son and come out and vote, but I cant say the same for everyone. Some people aren’t as fortunate and don’t have that flexibility to leave work, or get their kids, or find a babysitter, you know?
