Humanities Portfolio

Here's my Humanities portfolio about the things I remember most about . I couldn't record because my mike didn't work so I just wrote down what I was going to say under the slides...you'll see it. So I thought there was no point in making it into a movie since I don't have my voice in it...So HERE YOU ARE ENJOY!!      Laughing

                     Language Autobiography

“Tyrell you can’t be going around talking to people any ol way you want to, there’s some that you have to speak to intelligently and clearly.” When I was young my mother told me ever since that I would have to talk a different way around different people. When I was in elementary school she told me that I have to talk intelligent to my teachers and not try to say umm or huh. I asked her why I couldn’t say that and she responded “Because you want to be betrayed as an intelligent young man because there are some stereotypes for black men.” Even now I have to code switch from when I’m at home to when I’m in school.
I’m not going to say the same thing to one of my peers to my teacher. For example if I wanted to call someone my age I would probably say “Yo come mere”, but if I was talking to a teacher I would go over to them and say “excuse me Mr. or Mrs. Whatever.” I even talk different to my parents then I would do to my teachers. I would tell a teacher “awww man why you drawlin”, but I wouldn’t say that to my mother. I would say “mother (if I wanted some thing) your not being fair”.
My mother believes that just because I may act lazy when I’m at home, that I’m going to act lazy when I’m at school or I’m going to act lazy when I get a job. For the record I have had jobs and I have not acted lazy while I was there because when I’m at home I’m more relaxed. When I’m outside of my relaxed/comfort zone, I act different because I try my best to make a good first impression. For an example if I went out for a job I wouldn’t say “yo homie wassup?”, I would say “hello sir how is your day going?”.
There are just some things that you shouldn’t do or say around certain people because what you say and do can determine how that person feels about you. Even though it may not be true that’s how that person portrays you. I hear a lot of people say they don’t code switch, that they’re not going to change who they are for anybody. In my opinion I believe that is stupid because like I said before if your applying for a job you wouldn’t talk the way you would with your friend because if you did you would most likely not get the job. America is run on what the higher society or politicians believe is “correct English.” Even though I don’t believe that there is necessarily a such thing as correct English I have to use what they think is correct English to survive later on in life. So I’m glad that my mother told me when I was young that I would have to change the way I say and do things around different people. Now I know that code switching is a great tool that I can use in my life.
