I was reading some blogs in my reader yesterday and came across this post by Carl Fisch. It's chock full o' stats. I'm thinking, surely, someone could find this useful. Anyone?
The statistics may be provocative. I wish Mr. Fisch provided an analysis. Without some context, the statistics could border on fear-mongering---depending on his audience.
Here's what occurred to me:
The US is a nation of immigrants (with respect to our ealiest immigrants who were here 12-19000 years ago).
1/3 of the continental US was part of Mexico as recently as 1845.
One of the problems with the US' population growth is really the problem high energy consumption. As of 1998, the US produced 18% of global oil---a limited resource, yet consumed 40% of global oil.(http://energy.cr.usgs.gov/energy/stats_ctry/Stat1.html).
With a growing population, the US will have to committ to the folllowing:
reduction in energy consumption
equitable access to sustainable energy, food, homes, healthcare, transportation, education, employment, etc.
What's love got to do with it?
