ILP end of year reflection

As a repeat of what my project is; the goal of the project is to learn more about sustainability, green design, and energy saves, while applying some of my new found knowledge to give back to my school and make it more "green".

What I have done so far was found an amazing mentor, Peter Brown, for this project. Than Peter and I got to work quickly to give me material and resources to start my research into this topic. One resource was going and looking at a LEED design school Peter designed in Ft. Worth TX. We have also presented at the educational conference Educon 2.0. There we talked about my project as well as how we are making long distance mentoring work. At the very end of the year I started trying to fill out a carbonfoot print calculator for my school.

I have learned many things this year during this project. Most of the year was spent making connections and really nailing down the goals that we want to achieve by the end of 3 years. However through that I have also learned about many different ways people are thinking about green design and different ways to make buildings more efficient. Have read many articles and are learning what the pros and cons are for each type of solution to the energy crisis.

I had many expectations for my ILP project. My expectations were quite big though and are only just starting to get accomplished. See my Goals and Dream Goals

My ILP I picked so that I could see if this topic of green energy and such actually interested me before going into chemical engineering in university to work on alternative energy. This project greatly connects to my learning at SLA as well. It is all about designing my own learning and our core values.

From my experience this year with my ILP i'm taking away the skills of making connections to people that could possibly help me with my project. As well as a slightly better skills of setting deadlines and monitoring myself in a big project like this one.

My advice to people who want to take on a project like this is to be open minded. You have to be willing to switch your game plan when things don't work out the way you wanted/expected them to. You also have to have a lot of self motivation and be willing to sit down and work on your own without much guidance.

ILP

Currently I don’t have an actual ILP and have been spending the past few weeks working in the school’s office answering phones with Miss. Dianna.  However before my allergies forced me to transfer to the office (they have like 4 dogs), I was interning at Ground Zero Center City Salon. I did a lot of work with inventory and organization, and learned a bit about styling hair and washing. This experience was pretty fun but I didn’t get what I planed to out of it. I wanted to learn a lot more about doing hair and working with people then what I had gotten after this experience. Originally I had wanted to be a hairdresser when I graduated, but now I think I’m going back to my other idea of going into travel. It didn’t really teach me anything that would help me with school nor help me to come up with an ILP idea for next year. If your planning on pursuing a future ILP such as this I strongly suggest that you really look into it and be sure that you learn what you want to learn while there. Don’t get my wrong, I actually really liked my time at GZCC but I do wish that I had learned more then I did in my time there.

ILP Fair Blog

1812 Productions is Philadelphia’s All Comedy Theater Company. 1812 is dedicated to: entertaining, educating and exploring a variety of issues through comedy, supporting and hiring local artists, and making the end product accessible to a diverse general public with a particular focus on the greater Philadelphia region (lifted from their website).

On Wednesdays, I am the resident intern, meaning that I do whatever they tell me to. They’re very nice, though, and care for my welfare. Often, you will find me putting return and address labels on envelopes, stuffing those envelopes with fliers, or entering information into their database. I also researched possible donors for their silent auction and raffle. And yes, sometimes I do have fun things to do. I have read scripts that were mailed in by aspiring playwrights, and most of those were fairly entertaining and thoroughly horrible. When they were rehearsing for their holiday show, I sat in on rehearsals and even got to participate a bit!

I can’t say I’ve learned a list of things. Mainly, I’ve just gained a lot of experience in a real-life setting/workplace. I’ve learned about office dynamics and such. I guess you could say I’ve improved in labeling skills…

My advice for choosing your ILP: make sure you pick something you like. I’ve heard my classmates complaining about how they hate their ILP and that they wish they had been able to pick something else. Well, they were able to pick something else. 1812 didn’t come to the ILP Expo, we found them. If you don’t like the options well enough (remember, you’re stuck for a whole year!), then find something for yourself.

1812-specific advice: If you’re interested in interning at 1812, just be open. Take advantage of the opportunities. The people who order me around at 1812 are really nice and helpful, and I have been to many of their events and stuff. I went to their major fundraiser, all of their shows this season, and other events. Those have all been outside of standard ILP hours, and I am so grateful towards the people there for letting me go to them. Overall, just be nice and personable.
