Q4

Humanities Final Portfolio 2009

Out
of all the various assignments in Mr. Block’s History and English
classes this year, what I learned can be summed up into a few general
understandings. One example is that, Language is like a painting of
one’s identity but when appropriate, one should have the self-control
to camouflage it.  As we read Their Eyes Were Watching God, we also had
a unit on Language. We did many different activities and had many
different discussions about it. As a class, we then decided that
language is more than just a voice; it is part of one’s identity.

4th Quarter Art Benchmark

For our fourth quarter benchmark this year in art class, we had to create stencils which we would use to create a decal on a t-shirt. We had to think of an image we wanted to put on a tshirt, sketch it out and then put it on tracing paper. Then, we had to take the sketch on the tracing paper and transfer it to thicker paper to create a stencil of the image. Then, we would have to ply the stencil with paint and screen it onto a shirt.

History Q4 Commercial- Blase Biello and Ian McClendon

Below you will find our Commercial. It is based off of the Strauder Vs. West Virginia Supreme Court Case.

Print Making

A clash between Art and Biochemistry produced The Print Making Project. The agenda is to do research on the three elements given. When the info is collected, make a sketch that resembles the info gathered. Then you have three sketches in front of you. Choose one and make a print out of it. Silver chemical symbol Ag from its Latin name Argentums. It is a transitional metal and has the highest electrical conductivity. That’s how I got the idea for my prints. I would make a print with lightning striking the metal. My first design was similar to the design of franklins experiment when he tied a key to a kite. I made a beautiful sketch although is would be hard to carve. So I made a simple but elegant sketch.

Chromium: Print Making Project

In our Biochemistry class we were studying the Periodic Table in its entirety. Mr. Best, our Biochemistry teacher showed us that some other people made some element prints for the periodic table and we thought it would be cool if we did the same. We interpreted our element based on our research of our element we completed individually. The element I chose was Chromium.

Q4 History Benchmark: The Rise and Fall of San Francisco

For the fourth quarter History benchmark I created a newspaper style article, with an additional article besides the main article. I tried to make everything look legit, using the San Francisco Chronicle's cover page as a guide. Nonetheless, it's about the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, and what would happen if the earthquake was more severe and destroyed the entire city, including the geology of the city's area. Enjoy.

"Do It Yourself Booklet"

This quarter in geometry, we've been focusing on ways to determine unknown dimensions indirectly. We learned we can do this by using a similarity ratio, which is the proportion that you get when you divide any corresponding side of one triangle by its corresponding side in other similar triangle. We also learned how to use trigonometric ratios which is a ratio that describes a relationship between a side and angle of a triangle. When properly plugged into a calculator, it can be used to find missing sides and angles. For this benchmark, we had to solve for an unknown height using both of those principles, show and analyze our calculations, and put everything together in an organized booklet.

Blog 2 Othello Q4 Benchmark

My group and I have completed the script and have already started recording for our presentation. The way that we're going to be presenting it is through a podcast. We all have designated people we must reenact for this project. I am doing Desdemona and Cassio, Michael is doing Othello and Roderigo, Dakota is doing Barbantio, and Jacob is doing Iago. My job is also to edit everyones parts to make the podcast ready for the presentation.

The good things about working in this group is that everyone knows their assignments. We all know what we must do to get our portion done and we know how to use our time effectively. But the bad things about working in a group is that some people didn't have computers to use the program we needed to record the lines. So we had to designate times in which we were going to be able to get them to do their part.

For the editing part we had to choose which parts of the script sounded good together, as well as what would get straight to the point without losing story plot. It was hard to analyze all of the text and edit it, but we found out how to do it effectively and correct.

My understanding for the plot and characters, as well as the theme are deepening through this benchmark process because I'm starting to see how things are tying together due to what has happened. I'm also seeing how somethings need to be mentioned in the beginning to make sense of what has happened at the end.

Othello Q4 Benchmark Blog #1

My Group= Mekeda, Lucas, Shannel, Me

 Benchmark Topic= Jealousy

So far, my group has found quotes relating to the topic in Act 1 and Act 5. The project is going wel. We used our in-class time to find the quotes we have so far, and we have already discuseed and decided how we will present the final project. It will be a series of monologues for important scenes involving certain characters, instead of just straight up text reading. Also, we have decided to get more quotes and start editing over the weekend.

Working as a group has not been a problem for us. All members work efficiently and do not waste time. Our successes are that we stay on the same page and don't get off point when having discussions, we work seriously and diligently, and we get along with each other. No one argues or has trouble comunicating. The only difficulty the group has had so far was that we had trouble deciding on how we would present the final project, since none of us really were too concerned about how we presented. So,we all just agreed on and picked monologues.

In terms of understanding the text, I have gotten a better understanding since the project started. I see how characters show their jealousy without saying it. Also, I've seen that the jealousy started earlier than i thought. For example, when the story begins (on the first page, in fact) Iago talks of his disappointment and disgust at Cassio receiving the lieutenancy instead of him. Iago puts his jealouusy out for the audience to see as soon as possible, not exactly a smart move, but it still helped me to understand him a little more, as well as the concept of jealousy in the rest of Othello.

Q4 history benchmark

For our Q4 benchmark we were given topics to study, I was to Study the Little Rock Nine. My class and I were supposed to write a 5-pargraph essay witch would later be turned into a 30-second commercial. In our essay we were to provide knowledge about African American history.

An active member in the classroom of Love.

Through out my time here in the Classroom of Love, I have been exposed to a different style of teaching. My teachers Mr.Chase and Ms. Weinrob strive to make their students engaged in learing by being very demonstrative, hands on and humorous. I never get bored in English class because I always know there will be something hilarious, interesting and something worth hearing. It is great knowing that I am able to discuss important ideas with my class.

Right now, I have been reading Hamlet. The book has an amazing story behind it and wornderful old english language in it. If I had to read it and figure out all the words by myself I would be lost, not to mention incrediably bored. Mr. Chase and Ms. Weinrob have found a way to teach the book through acting, reading with personailty, and group discussions that are worth hearing.

I am happy to be in the Classroom of Love, I look forward going to English all the time! I feel like I have a family here with people who won't judge me for my style of learning and who will listen to my ideas. Oh and I can't forgot they call me mmdoe! Smile
