Immigration Visualization Project

When first exposed to the immigration statistics, I took note on how drastic the different change in numbers were. As observed the information further, I connected the different highs and lows of the numbers to different points in history that I was previously aware of. I cannot say that the statistics took me completely by surprise, but neither can I say that one point didn't intrigue me. In the timeframe where the Gilded Age was at its height, the immigration numbers were't as high as I pictured them.

Predicting the future immigration statistics is perplexing. On one hand, the United States is currently in a time of economic tension, which I believe would repel immigrants. On the other, immigrants today from many countries in Europe are trying to escape their own nation's economic problems that are worse than the situation in America. One prediction I feel confident about, is that there will be many immigrants from countries like Greece and several North African nations. I do not know if our immigration numbers will follow the same increasing trend.

My group and I wanted to create a timeline of sorts, but we didn't want a normal, horizontal/vertical type of graphic. We decided to use a spiral, because it is a visually captivating figure. We then added several pictures that represented different points in time that effected immigration. The most challenging tasks in creating our piece had to have been using Adobe Illustrator and marrying physical media with digital media. Finding a scanner was a laborious task as well...
If given the chance to recreate my group's final project, I would like to do all of it in Adobe Illustrator. I feel it would look more streamline that way. I would have also added more information, as well as a y axis so that people would be able to actually get numbers from this visual.

I think overall this was a good project. When we began to look through history and see what happened it became clear what influenced the immigration rates. A lot of it was due to wars and military action. That was really interesting to me. The challenging part was coming together to create a visualization of our data. I think if we had to do this project over again, we would have used a different program to create our visualization. Although ManyEyes was cool, it was frustrating over 90% of the time. Often we would be stuck reformatting our data and re-entering it into ManyEyes. Because we were so set on using the treemap, we didn't think of trying something else. After we realized that this wasn't working out, we tried a bunch of other formats until Ms. Laufenberg showed us the scatterplot thing. That worked the best so we stuck with it.

The huge spikes that occurred surprised me most about that data. I thought the immigration due to wars in other countries was obvious. Many people flock to the US for safety. Looking at the data, I see highs and then low-lows. It seems that in 1999-2000 there was a very high percentage of immigration. I would predict that that number is likely to drop for this current decade and the next. The US isn't in a very good spot economically and that would definitely factor into the amount of people attempting to gain access to America. That same idea can be seen within the data. When the US was doing well everyone wanted in.

My group wanted to represent that data in a really creative way. We wanted to do something outside of the normal bar or pie chart. When Ms. Laufenberg showed us a bunch of cool visual graphs my group all like the spiral type one. Ours is a simpler version but with the same concepts. It has pictures to describe the major events and uses the red line to signify the amount of immigration per decade. It is very visual rather than numerical.

The challenging part of this project was sharing the work. It was one piece that three people needed to work on it. Distributing the tasks evenly was difficult. If I had to do this project over, I would choose a different format. My group tried to do something interesting and it worked relatively well, but it the distribution of work was the hard part. We gathered the info and developed the concept together but the actual construction had to be one person.

Reflection.

It was kind of challenging to figure out what kind of project we wanted to do. It was also challenging dividing the work all at once. But I really enjoyed the process of the project. We took a risk and we don't know for sure how the risk will fair out. But I really liked the communication of it though. We might do and easier project differently maybe because this one actually took a long time to do. We also wanted to do a video but that didn't really work out well. I think the immigration is really unstable. Since during the great depression there was really no immigrants coming in I think during the recession we would start to lose because there will be no jobs and no money. So there would be no reason for them to come here. But since immigrants keep coming in maybe because of the American dream and just being america makes people come here. Thats how my friend came here.

This project was fun to research, and fun to create a presentation for. The thing that surprised me most about this project was seeing how certain events made such a big impact on immigration. The single most surprising event was seeing how much impact the great depression had on the immigration to the United States. I would have guessed that it had some impact, but not as much as it actually did. Something that somewhat obvious was that since nothing as big as the great depression has happened in a while, the immigration would be rising at a rate close to what it should be. The only major things that have happened since the research left off was the war in Iraq, and our recession. These things will probably have some impact on immigration, but not as big as something like the great depression. If everything continues with nothing major happening for the next 20 years, then I think immigration will continue in the trend that it should.

The most challenging part of this project was setting up the presentation. We got all of the data and information fairly quickly, but it was hard to set up the presentation tool that we wanted to use to represent our data. At first my group wanted to use a many-eyes tree chart, but it wasn't working out in the way that we wanted it to. After the tree chart didn't work we decided to do a sort of time line, showing how the number of immigrants increased depending on what the decade was, and if you click on each point you can see what the most important thing that effected immigration was. An example is that if you click on the 1930 point, the main thing is economy because our country was in a depression.

If i was going to do this project over i would try to use a different presentation tool. The one that we used ended up working out, but it would be much better if we had spent all the time trying to use one too, doing something else with another tool or way to present. The presentation could have been much more creative than what it ended up being if we had more time to focus on the tool the we ended up actually using.

What surprised me most about this information is that even when the immigration rate was very iffy and varied. The population had a smooth increase and was constant. In our visual, you can see the red line (immigration throughout the years) and how it's zig-zagging all over the place. The only thing that seems pretty obvious at explaining was WHY the immigration rate was so crazy. The events and history is the key to understanding the population. My group decided to visually present the information like a swirl chart. A swirl of years and images of what went on during those years was shown and the history was presented. The first black line is like showing how smooth the population is and how the immigration (red line) was very crazy.

The challenging part with working in a group was that it didn't seem like enough work to distribute out to three people. The researching of the dates and events was evenly distributed, but when it came to showing the visual part of the project, it didn't seem like enough. If I had to do this project over, I think my group and I would make it a priority to include more and some phrases here and there. There's a lot someone can understand by looking at the photo, but if they don't know exactly what even occurred in what time frame, they'll stare blankly at the photo.

All of this didn't surprise me much because I already knew most of this happened. What I didn't know was all of that could've effected immigration at some point. Because of the way our economy and current job status is I feel as though the immigration rate is only going to slow back down and start to decrease if things don't start to get better. Immigrants come over for jobs and that's what we are currently lacking the most. We kind of decided on it by what was going to represent our data the best. To me, the most challenging part was trying to get the final visual done and how the longer you wait to start your visual the more stressful it becomes when you finally start it. If I had to do anything different I would use my time better and spend less time on trying to find so much information but work with what I have and then do my visual as such. But overall it turned out to be good.

Kamilah's Reflection

So first of all, the project that me and my group did was by hand and so there is no kind of link or anything to post on the blog but you can see it at anytime by just going to see Lauf about it.

What surprised you most about this information? What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set?

So when we first starting doing this experiment I found that the data was extremely surprising to me. I would have never thought that the immigration income had varied the way that it did. I found it funny that there seemed to be a pattern to the data though. It was like America realized that the immigration was becoming a problem so they tried to control it but no matter what they tried, when people wanted to get into the country, the did.
At first i wasn't really sure of why the data looked the way it did but after looking up the facts about each time period, things started to make since. Some were slightly funny as well. There was one where alcohol becamed banned and there was a significant decrease in the population of immigrant income.

Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades.

The data shows that when the country is going through a hard time, no one really wants to come in. From the data and background research that we did as a group it seems as if immigrants only take an interest in our country when we're flourishing and prospering. Right now though our country is on a fine line between okay and consumed in a depression. I think that the immigrant income isn't going to increase or decrease because right now our country is at a stand still money wise. There's gonna be a pretty constant flow i think for a while until we either get worse or better as a country.

Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.

At first we were going to use prezi but then things got too bothersome on the site. Then while trying to find a new way to present the idea, I got an idea oh how I wanted to visually present it. It would look beautiful digitized but no one in my group had the tech skillz to make the vision we agreed on. There for in the end we decided to hand make it.

What parts of group work were challenging?

I think making the visual presentation was the hardest part because it took a lot of effort and thought. We had to make sure that the data was presented effectively but not boring.

What would you do differently if you had this project to do over?

If I had done this project over I think I would firstly do it myself. Then I think I would have made the art work a lot more neater and detailed. Because I was working with partners who really don't have drawing skills I had to make sure that the artwork in the project was simple enough for them to mimic so that I didn't have to do it all by myself.

I think the thing that really surprised me was all the data before The Civil War. I knew about events before that time but as far as immigration goes, I didn't know a thing. What seemed sort of obvious to me as the huge decline in immigration during the time of The Great Depression. When I saw that I thought of back then and how it greatly difficult for people living here to find jobs, let alone someone how had immigrated. Yet, one thing I discovered that also impacted that great decline were the Quota Acts of the 1920s. These greatly limited and discriminated against nearly anyone trying to enter the U.S. My group at first wanted to try something with Prezi and we had something going but we found that we were taking too long to get something off the ground so we decided to go with a graphic instead. But as we were working on the graphic, I thought of using Minecraft to have a even better visual interpretation. But we soon realized that this was greatly time consuming and just stuck to our guns. I think the most challenging part was trying to incorporate the dates because sometimes, at least based on our research, the immigration had sort flatten out. If we had more time I'd would surely go for the minecraft idea, because I think that would have been a really creative way to display the data.

This project was interesting, and allowed me to look into the past and see why there was maybe so many immigrants that came over during that year. I was most surprised at how dramatically the number of immigrants that came over during the wars decreased as fast as they did. Over the next few years I feel like immigration numbers will continue to climb rapidly. With the world's economy collapsing as a whole, the United States as bad as it is is still one of the best economies in the world. With things falling apart i feel like more people will want to come here. Immigration will continue to climb for several decades.

Finding a good way to represent the data that we had received was a little difficult. We ran into a few difficulties along the way, and we eventually found a good way to represent the data thanks to Ms. Laufenberg. She helped us find a correct format that would allow us to show our data correctly. The method in which our data was displayed was in a scatter chart, representing the decades and number of immigrants per decade.

The only part of the project that we found to be challenging was what s. Laufenberg helped us with and that was finding the right graph format that would allow us to represent the data correctly. We all got our data that we needed as soon as we needed it and worked diligently. Also, if we were to do something differently we might have chose a different site to look for graphs to represent the data this was we might not run into the complications that we ran into while we worked on it.

Immigration
What surprised me most about this information was how drastically the happenings in both the US and other countries could affect the immigration rate. The things that were really obvious when explaining the data set were when there were wars in different countries, the immigration rates shot up and when the US was involved in the war, they usually went down and also when there were famines or other things that obviously negatively affected the people in a different country, the immigration rates would shoot up again. In the next two decades I expect the immigration rates to be lower because of the economical situation and how easily the situation can be displayed on websites that are very popular. If people in other countries can see that we're going through an economical crisis they will also be able to see how high the unemployment rate is and how many different governmental budget cuts we are going through and they might not want to come to a country going through such hardship.

At first we were going to do a storybook type thing, but then when the instructions were clarified and we saw we had to display the events and the data, we decided to do a prezi because we could show the overall graph and put more detailed information inside it. The most challenging parts of the group work were finding a way to collaborate on the different websites. Some sites only allowed one person to work on it, so instead of all of us working on it together, at the same time, we had to take it in shifts. On prezi we had found a way to collaborate, but it took us some time to get used to it. I think if I had to do this project over, I would find a way to make it more creative or colorful or something. To me, it's a bit dry, but it's informative. We wanted to add pictures and maybe video to it, but we were short on time.

The immigration visualization project had some data that was somewhat surprising and others that I thought was a bit predictable. For example, the fact that immigration was so conjoined with our history was not surprising. Even though there should have been a gradual curve in development social implications can always change a graph. It makes perfect sense that during the 1940's there was a huge drop in immigration into the United States, which was predominately caused by World War II. What surprised me the most about the data was that certain parts of the world had more leeway into our country then others. In the next two decades, I'd like to presume that immigration has dropped in our country due to our bad economy and how hard it is to find jobs now.

If the economy can be fixed and make us a prosperous country once again, then we will have another huge influx of immigrants and we will be back to the gradual curve. The gradual curve, created an interesting phenomena in comparing that to the actua data. So, when my group made the decision to work together we came together with ideas. We wanted to visually represent the data in a way that was quick and straightforward. We used an online presentation tool called VUVOX. One of the presentation themes in VUVOX is making collages. Our group decided to create a timeline of the information through visual representations of each decade. The bigger the picture the higher the immigration during that decade.

That course of action seemed the simplest to us and was very useful. Unfortunately, VUVOX is a website so saving work online was a challenge. During the creation of my collage piece it was deleted, or not saved and I had to start all over again. Also, I may have not been extremely explicit in the instructions and my parter and I had two different ideas of what we would be doing. If I could fix my mistakes and begin this project again I would choose some better photos and possibly have key. The key could describe what was going on in the government or immigration because I have the historical facts but not the ones on immigration. I would also incorporate better pictures or visual representations of what's going on within that time period and within history. I would also include a personal account of a person's journey to America as the audio just so it would add more depth to the story.

Honestly, I was quite surprised to see the current placement with immigration on the graph. I feel honored to live in such a "drastic" period in history. The last spike in immigration happened quite a while ago. But now, I can see that in my generation, immigration has been the highest it's ever been. But after looking at the graph, I noticed that it's not very linear. In other words, it doesn't have one set increasing rate. It doesn't increase by a certain amount every decade. It's very sporadic, and for some reason, I kind of expected that.

In history, you can't really predict how things would go. The great depression would have never happened if people knew it was going to. So therefore, it's truly hard to determine how things will be for our future. There are a multitude of options. For example, the United State's economic position right now is... terrible. I don't know how things were during the great depression, but I'm sure it wasn't good. And look how fast that happened. If something happened to America, it could possibly spark another very serious economic predicament. So that means we can go from the highest immigration number EVER, to possibly the lowest. Or, maybe by some unusual coincidence, congress passes some new immigration law that brings more people to the United States without as much difficulty prior. Then instead of nine million, it sparks to eleven million. It's impossible to determine how things could turn out. Next year is 2012 after all, who knows if we'll even be here! (Kidding).

In our project, similar to a bar graph, we hand-drew a city that's building's sizes vary depending on how the amount of immigration during that decade. And I feel it was interpreted fairly well. You can see some buildings nearly come off the page because of how many people immigrated to the US, whereas you'd need a magnifying glass to see the buildings during the late 1800's. (Exaggeration, you can see it without a magnifying glass). Then each building's name was determined by something that happened in that time period. The larger buildings were from the early 1900's because of war and from this decade. Whereas the "Great Depression" building is only about a centimeter because of the low amounts of immigration.

In general, the way we wanted to present the information was the hardest difficulty. We had so many awesome, creative ideas. But after realizing that we had almost 20 decades to cover, we came to a loss. Then the idea of a "populated city" came into the discussion, which made a lot of sense. The more people = the larger the city. So I feel it was an effective way of transferring the information in a spiffy little way. After we decided on how to present, it was smooth sailing from there.

I believe the way we did the project this time was very well. If WE had the opportunity to change something about next time, the amount of decades was rather difficult in portraying in a unique way. If it was a lower amount, I feel one of our prior ideas to the city could have been better. But explaining 20 decades was a little more challenging. Though, you can't leave out important dates in history. So I suppose we'll just have to stay content with our city.

I thought the information was very interesting. The dip's the rises of the time periods were interesting.

For our project we decided that we would make a picture of collage of all our times. Like, for the 2000's we showed a picture of the September 11th terrorist attacks. For the Chinese exclusion Act, we had pictures of Asians that looked distressed, so show what it did to them.

i predict that the immigration rates will increase, because as our economy grows slowly so will our immigration rates will grow. But, if Barack Obama doesn't get reelected, than i think that our immigration will decrease, heavily. Since, Most of the people that come here are either Arab/LAtino, and his vote for Latino and arab were really high, the next president wont get that approval rate, so it will decline. I don't know if that's good or bad for the United States, because we don't really need a spike in Immigration because, we barely have enough to support the people here.

Honestly, to stay on task. Because, we're all Soccer players and we just usually talk about soccer all the time, so when we get together, it was hard for us to really work together without talking about other stuff, but i think it all came together in the end because we're all great students.

The one thing i'd do differently is use another presenting tool, the one we used is a pain in the but. `

The thing that surprised me most about my project with Morgant Marant was not only the differences between the time periods of immigration in relation to history, but the unexplainable parts of immigration. Some of the reasons we found were that over time, a combination of the past and present events created a numeric value of how large or little the population increase became for that decade.

Based on past data, the immigration trend seems as if it would decrease partially in the next two decades. Especially with the new presidency in the next year, laws may change drastically. That is, if the government can ever agree on anything. However, there will most likely always be a rate of increase or decrease with immigration. Even if we block of the border, it will take years to completely finish it. Some may propose that it will "create jobs and support the rise of the economy", but it will really only create a mass confusion of problems. The rate of immigration may then increase by rebellion. It has happened before, and there is no reason why it wouldn't happen again.

The different decisions made on how do conduct the project were to make sure of a few key points:

a) The project is visually appealing to the audience.
b) The images aren't too distracting to the overall message.
c) With the images posted, there is some sort of explanation and way for it to be interactive.

Therefore, using an online program called Vuvox, we created a timeline of photos. The size of the photos represents the rate of increase/decrease per decade. The decades are labeled above the pictures so that the audience can also visualize the different things that may have taken place during those periods. The pictures themselves are also representative of what happened in that time period. It's almost like watching a short movie. There is a sliding bar that allows a smooth transition between the decades. On each photo there is a small plus sign, and if clicked on, zooms in to the picture and the text shows up, revealing the different facts about that decade.

The challenges of this project were finding a way that both Morgan and I could work on the project at the same time, finding pictures that fit the decade and expressing a clear explanation of how the decisions of the government clearly affect the rate of immigration. Also, it was a challenge to push for a further explanation of immigration. Sometimes, there were doubts as to why the changes happened the way they did.

The things that I would change about the project if done over would probably have been to finalize all ideas and make sure every expectation was clear before assuming my partner knew. Even though we both had a similar idea, we had to do the project at least twice each. Once we combined our ideas, it was easy to see that it would be a success. I am happy with the final product, because it is very symbolic and clear to the audience. It isn't very hard to interpret, but it still challenges the audience to think while they look.

So, our project is on paper, we didn't have it digitally.

What surprised me the most during this project was that we were searching like the immigration rates during different decades and I realized that there were dramatic difference during the decades based on what happened on the decade before. If something bad happened in the Americas, the immigrated decreased like multiple times and when nothing bad or good happened, the immigration increased gradually so there weren't any trend or pattern on the data. Looking at the data, you'll understand why America's so diverse because there are people coming from all over the world every year.

So like I previously stated, our project is on paper. We decided to use paper because we were planning to create models on google sketchup or use technology to represent the data but we were running out of time. One thing that was challenging for our group work was that we didn't get to work together outside school because it was a paper and only one person could edit it. But we worked together on gathering information on google doc. If we were to do this project again, I'd use something like google presentation where everyone in our group can edit. However, at the end of the day, I'm proud of our work.

What surprised me the most about this information was how "in-depth" everything happened. Of course, there were highlights of the timeline (things I've seen before in all of my History Classes), but in my point of view, things happened in order. Such as, after the first big War, the Great Depression took place because a lot of money was spent for the army.

In the next two decades, America will have a great number of Latino race. Also, if we don't go to war as much as we did during the 20th century, we'd have a good economy. If prices still go up though, that's where things might slightly get out of hand. The decision on visually representing the project was thought of by a group member, but we both collaborated well and added images of the main things that happened during each decade.

Parts of the work that was challenging was to make it seem exciting and not boring. Other than that, links we found helped us gain knowledge. However, if I was to differ the project in any type of way, it would be by adding more images per year so that way everything that happened per decade would be known of easily.

What surprised me most about this information was that I didn't know how much history in and outside America determined the immigration rate. I always thought that the immigration was constant or gradually increasing with the new technology and "freedom" that were being put into Americans. What seemed quite obvious about the was that situations had to happen for their to be a tremendous growth and a tremendous increase in how many people were migrated/immigration from outer countries.
I believe that the immigration rates will stay the way it is for a few months. Simply for the fact because of the recent celebration of 9/11 and issues with the economy now.
Our decision for the project was to simply make a timeline with pictures, dates, and information. So it's easy for everyone to understand but also easy for us to teach the students.
The parts of group work that I found challenging was the research. A majority of the time when I was typed in a certain date or year to research something else in another continent would pop up such as Australia and Japan. Even though people were migrating from there, I was mainly researching about America.
What I would do differently if I had this project to do over and maybe look up for information about other countries. When I was researching the immigration rate I was looking at why people were coming to America instead of why were they leaving their home. But not just because America had jobs and money, but what was pushing them out of their home.

What surprised me most about the information my group found on immigration is just the overall trend of the immigration rate. I had no clue that the amount of people coming into the country was so inconsistent. By learning this information I feel more conscience about how the things that are going on around us effects everybody. However, it was obvious that during war the immigration rate would go down because America would want to keep a tighter leash on who can come in and out our country.

I feel like if the economy continues to worsen the immigration rate will go down. Either people will choose not to come to America or the government will be more strict about who's coming in.

As a group we decided that we wanted to create a graph similar to the one Ms. Laufenberg had given us, but instead we wanted it to be more visual. We chose to get pictures that best depicted the different circumstances that the world, more specifically America, was going through at the time. We feel like it gets the message across about what happened, and what the immigration rate was that decade in comparison to the years before and after.

The most challenging part about the group work was the technology issues we had. For a period of time, several people in our group had tech related issues. This delayed the process slightly considering that most groups had 3 functioning computers to work on, and our group had one for a short period of time. It also harder to get work done when someone in the group doesn't participate or put in as much effort as the other members in the group. Aside from that the group work went pretty well.

If I were to do this project over I would probably try and find an even better way to represent the information that we found. I feel like the way we chose was pretty basic, and could have been a tad more creative.

Immigration Data on Prezi

What surprised me the most about this information was that there was a lot of different reasons for the immigration rates throughout the years of American history. What's quite obvious was there were a lot of hardships in other countries causing them to flee to a better country that could provide money, jobs, and education which was America. Though there were problems within America itself there were not as much immigrants arriving but there were always some for each decade.

Many ups and downs occurred in the numbers of immigrants arriving to America, but there are also many push and pull factors. With our the recession currently going on in America the trend expresses that we may go down due to the recession, job cuts more than ever before.

My group and I had a difficult time of picking the best way to present our information visually. We eventually decided to do Prezi because it is an easy layout and very fun to do. The most difficult part of the group work was including all different pictures and everyones separate part of decades into one project. There is nothing I would like to change with my project because I am very happy with my final product.

For US History class we looked at two graphs that showed how population grows and how over the past last 190 years immigration to the United States has changed. The first thing that was noticed was simply that these graphs were far from the same. The next thing was what could cause the strange and drastic changes in the immigration graph. Through research we found that these numbers were affected because of events, major ones were the Industrial Revolution, which caused a major increase in immigration and the Great Depression, which caused a major drop in immigration. One specific event thing I learned and was surprised about through this project was the Quota Acts. The Quota Acts were very strict laws limiting immigration from countries, some more limited than others. For instance during the Quota acts in 1924 where Chinese immigrants were limited to in the hundreds, German immigrations went into the hundred thousands. This made me realize how hand crafted the American population really is.

From what I’ve learned about history and immigration through this project I predict that the US immigration is close to a crash. I don’t know much about American economics but if we have another crash in the stock market and go into a depression it’s going to drop like it did before. Actually in fact when immigration hit the last peak it was at it crashed soon after, currently we are back up at the same numbers the previous peak were at, which to me signifies a soon drop. It will continue to go down for the next decade or so, and won’t start lifting up at least till the 2030’s.

The process for developing a product for this project was challenging. Our team Ryan Harris, Paige Wayman, and I hit a couple roadblocks in developing a good way of representing the data. At first we were going to make a Prezzi presentation but found that it was in fact fairly complicated to work with and decided it wasn’t the right type of visual representation we were aiming for. So instead we produced a map with arrows. The arrows size represents the amount if immigration that came from that part of the world. The color correlates with the color on the time line at the bottom. We found this to be a more eye-catching way of presenting the data. If we were going to do this project over I think we could have mixed the Prezzi and the map together. For example the events that we put on the map we could make little side notes that went off giving more information. Nothing was particularly challenging except building it. We all agreed on ideas and came together to work equally and cohesively.

The data set wasn't really surprising in the 19 hundreds because i already knew the major events that would push and pull people from immigrating. I would say that my time period 1820 -1880 i didn't know much , except like the civil war . It was quite interesting to find out how many epidemics happen and wars happened that America had no part in . I feel as though immigration will actually decrease because we don't really have much to offer anyone who does immigrate . Our economy is terrible , 14 million people are unemployed. I wouldn't come into such a quagmire , it could get better in the next 20 years but it could worsen .
At first my group was going to do a story book , but then you clarified specially what you were looking for and the story book wasn't the right way to go . It had too many words and not enough visual. Then we decided to do a prezi because we liked the effects it offered and we had many ideas . So we decided to put our words on the immigration graph , when it is zoomed in you can see the events that lead to the amount. It was challenging to combine our work and come up with an idea at first because jessica didn't know how to use a prezi and then we had to figure out every little detail. I would do more of a visual graph with pictures and more facts/research.

What surprised you most about this information? What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set?
It was interesting to realize that what happened during certain time periods either interested immigrants, or turned them away. It was pretty obvious that if there was more money and jobs available, that more people would want to take advantage of the opportunity.

Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades.
I honestly feel that there could be and increase and a decrease in the immigration numbers for the next two decades. Due to the economy having it's many ups and downs, it could be hard for someone to move here and start a living. There's a lot of changes that are taking place that could be troubling for new citizens. However, I do believe that once everything is taken care of, agreed upon, and settled, the immigration numbers will increase.

Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.
My group first wanted to do something really creative, and something that everyone might not choose. We started making a book on the website Tikatok. We soon realized that it wasn't working for the assignment, so we then switched to using Prezi.

What parts of group work were challenging?
We were all new to using Prezi, so we had to get used to using that. Other than that, I think we did a good job with organizing our time periods, and displaying our information that we gathered. We worked well, and worked diligently.

What would you do differently if you had this project to do over? If I could do something differently, I would probably want to use more animations in Prezi. Our presentation basically goes from one time period to the next, but not much movement in between. So, maybe add more things to it.

Immigration History on Prezi

What was surprising about the information I saw was how the immigration population went accordingly to the events that were taking place at the time in the United States. Also, it was surprising to see what caused each event to happen. If something went wrong, another thing would go wrong. Or, if something good happened, something good would follow along. What seemed quite obvious about the data set was, seeing as the events that occurred in the United States -varied from being good and bad- it affected the immigration population from increasing (when good) and decreasing (when bad). I predict that within the next 2 decades, the population of the US will decrease but also increase. Due to the recession:people being laid off, businesses shutting down, schools shutting down, etc. the population of immigrants will decrease. I believe that after the economy becomes more stabilized the population rate will return to its normality of increasing. My partner Brianna and I decided to use prezi because of its easy access. We kept it easy and simple; a timeline that included the events that occurred at the time and a picture. What was challenging of this group work project was researching and obtaining accurate information. When searching for a certain year and its events, I would find events of certain states rather than information of the United States. What I woud do differently if I could do this project over again is instead of using prezi's format, I would make a video. I really liked the video Ms. Laufenberg showed us, it was of a roller coaster (representing the ups and downs of the prices of houses.) I feel as if we didn't really have time to be more creative. But, I liked the results of my project.

- When finding out the history between the US and it's immigration, most things seemed to make sense besides one thing. The period between 1881-1890 (note: I realized that I made a mistake for this date on the project) . While it was a huge immigration boom during this period, I found the Chinese Exclusion Act was also established during this same decade. So, I'm still confused as to why the immigrant numbers increased so greatly. Some obvious increases and decreases were things like The Industrial Revolution, and The Great Depression (which are great points that show extreme disparities between immigrant numbers in the US history.) As for my prediction of the US numbers of Immigrants for the next two decades, I don't find that to be the easiest thing to predict. My reason for that is because of the current economic state of the US, which is still in it's stages of pending effort to create more jobs, and to not add more to our deficit. Then again, we are still the most developed nation in the world, and I can imagine other millions of people wanting to come here for the opportunities as well. Not to mention, the number of immigrants that come would have to do with the nations that they are leaving from. The US would be flooded with immigrants if a nation perhaps has some sort of natural disaster, or fall in government. But overall, over the next two decades because the world is advancing more (could be in negative or positive ways) I could see 4 or 5 millions of people more than the previous decade coming over. As a group, we made our decision to to present the information similar to graph style but with a twist simply because of our inability to come up with something else more creative, but could also could be done within a certain span of time. But in the end, we decided to represent each decade as a building in a city and the title of each building has historical significance to the events of the decade that affect US immigration numbers (it's on paper by the way). Some parts of the group that were challenging was really finding the time to work on it together besides in class. Also, we weren't always on the same page, or we always were. If I could do this project over, I would definitely go with one our first ideas because they would've been more visually appealing, albeit more time consuming.

What surprised you most about this information? What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set?
Many things surprised me based on the information my group and I researched. Before I researched the time periods I was given I came across alot of information I never knew before. I think it helped alot with my knowledge of american history in general because within those time periods I gathered other information. Explaining this data wasn't difficult because the example graphs showed an more increases then downfalls with immigration.
Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades.
Over the next two decades I feel that the immigration population is going to increase. Only because the amount of immigrants increased since the early 2000s and america seems to provide alittle more then most countries give.
Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.
My group and I finally can to a conclusion of how we wanted to successfully and thoughtfully present our information. We decided that Prezi would be the best choice for our information to be given.
What parts of group work were challenging?
The challenging parts of my group work were the amount of information I could previde for a certain time period of my time line. It was difficult getting specific details of immigration.
What would you do differently if you had this project to do over?
Overall I feel my group and I provided enough information to provide the information the increases and decreases of immigration due to the historical events happening in each time period.

What surprised me most about this information was that there were millions of people coming into America for better opportunities, to give themselves and there kids a better life, but most of these people that came over had no degrees or anything they just came. For this reason because they knew America would be much more beneficial than there own country. I suppose for the next two decades the immigration rate would go up even more. Because even though we are in an economic crisis, America is still a place where hope lies for many people. To present this project visually Me, sam, and Ryan decided to do a keynote because we figured it would be the safest thing to do within the little amount of time that we had. The most difficult part of this group project was collaborating work, notes, and ideas when time in school wasn't enough. We also had to double check on a lot of events to make sure we were connecting the dates to the right events. If I could do this project all over again, I would manage my time better, so that all 2 of my group members would be able to collaborate ideas with me, and be able to make a sufficient straight forward project.

My group decided to do a project by hand, instead of doing it as a powerpoint or a project on the computer. We intended to draw walls with groups of people climbing over them. Each group would be holding a flag with the amount of of immigrants migrated into the US in that time period, and then on the walls we wrote what happened to cause them to come to America.

What surprised you most about this information? What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set?

I was most surprised about the reasons people in the US didn't want them in American and all the things they said, and how the felt about the other people, especially the Asians during the period when they were all banned to enter the US. It seemed very obvious that when the government decided to tell them they couldn't enter America, that's when a lot more Asians began to enter.
Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades.

I feel that it will continue, it may slow down a little though due to the economy and the recession that everyones in at the moment, but when, and if we ever get out of this recession and get back on our feet, i'm pretty sure that it will increase.
Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.
We all felt that since Kamilah is a talented drawer, and everyone was doing something on the computer, we could be different and use our strengths.
What parts of group work were challenging?

Figuring out how everyone could contribute was a little hard, but after we figured that out, the hardest part was the drawing for me because im a very terrible artist, that's why i said we "intended to draw walls" for some reason i couldn't draw the walls correctly so we switched them to books, but the drawing was simply the hardest part to me.
What would you do differently if you had this project to do over?

I'd work on my drawing so that we could've stuck to the plan so that they would look like walls, instead of books, but other then that, nothing, overall i thought the project was pretty good.

For American History we had to analyze and interpret different graphs that represented the population increase correlating to immigration. Interestingly enough, it seemed that inhabitants of this world would come to America even in its worst time of peril. I would say that the population/immigration wouldn't increase and probably stay at a steady rate. With the constant fighting between congress, the economy, and the revival of the judgmental American I cannot imagine an influx of people migrating to the U.S.

Originally, we had planned to create a video representing immigration and population in a super creative way. But nevertheless we decided to stick to the normal criteria of a visual project. The first picture is a picture of my original work, the second is the group presentation. Nothing was challenging besides effective communication between the group members. Honestly to do this over, I would have done the video if more time was allotted. It would have been a nice addition to this blog post. The most difficult task was having creativity while trying to make a decent mathematical/visual representation of the information given to us.

I learned a lot form this project,the are meny issues related to immigration that are usully overlooked because people dont think that they are related. It is surprising how immagration patterns can be compared with other graphed data to find corrolation. On of the theses comparsons that I found to be interesting was an immage of a graph representing immagration rates, compared with homacide rates, it showed that with higher immigration levels means lower homicide rates.

1. Q: What motivates you to come out and vote?

     A: What motivates me? The future of my child.

Q: What would you like to see changed in our political system?

     A: Umm. I would like to see the bickering amongst parties I would like to see that become more partisanship rather than bipartisanship

Q: Do you know why we vote on Tuesday?

    A: Do you know why? Because I don’t.

Q: Do you know about the law that states prisoners not being able to vote? Do you agree or disagree with that and why?

    A: I feel as though they only put this law through because of our president. I disagree with that law because if they are still considered US citizens and did their time they should be able to let their voice be heard just like any other US citizen.

Q: Did you learn about voting in school? If yes, did that impact your willingness to vote today?

    A: No, I didn’t really learn about school that much it wasn’t a big topic back then and that was in the 80’s really. Voting to me is much different then what it used to be. Voting is more popular than it ever was before because of our black president.

The first person I interviewed was Jennifer Hartman and she was a volunteer at the polls.

Summary:

Jennifer has voted for every election from our small elections to the Presidential elections. Why do we have voting day on Tuesdays? She has no clue, but it is what it is. The most memorable campaigns are the ones for the 2008 elections because everyone was so hyped up about it all. As for change in our political system, she'd like to see our government improve because we, Philadelphia, are not in the best economical state at the moment. I told Jennifer about my group's benchmark and what we wanted to do to improve the voting system, she agrees that we should get rid of the Electoral Colleges because it is, of course, unfair and we are disenfranchised.

The second person I interviewed was an old man (Louis?)because the woman Sabrina interviewed told us to see the views of an older person and differentiate her answers and his. We're outside because I was waiting for an old person to show up and just asked if he was going to go inside and vote.

Summary:

Louis is obviously old and he too, votes every year. Why? He doesn't know really. People remind him and he shows up. The thing is, Louis doesn't expect to see anything change from this election. As for the amount of impact he has on voting, he doesn't care of know how much his vote will impact the outcome. So if he doesn't really care, why did he come out and vote? Louis was reminded by his neighbors to vote when he was strolling through his neighborhood. He also said his "friend" Obama called him and told him to go out and vote. (HAHA - funny old people..)

Q: What motivated you to come out and vote?

A: I come out and vote for African-American rights. We have fought for years to gain our rights -and not only African Americans but women and the poor also. The government only listens to those who have money or are in their system. People have to realize that this isn't just a man's world anymore this is a people's world and the people should control our government.

Q: What would you like to see changed in our political system?

A: i would like to see a committee for each city, that met about once a month and reported back to the president and congress, so they could hear everyone's opinion.

Q: Do we know why we vote on Tuesday?

A: No I do not, do you know? (I responded by telling her that according to a seminar I attended the day before it was established years ago and it was because of people who traveled by horse and buggy. They made voting day on Tuesday so people who needed to travel far could do so and get back without traveling on religious days.)

Q:Are you always sure of who you are going to vote for when you walk into the booth or are you still deliberating?

A: I always know who I'm going to vote for.

Q: What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

A: I would like to see Philadelphia become more economical. Right now there are a lot of people on welfare and disability and unemployment. I would like to see ways to handle these issues, a way to help people out.

I went to Sullivan School and because of not liking the responses of the first four I ended up interviewing five. Their lack of enthusiasm and their short responses made me not want to display their interview here and so I chose to only display Sally's interview.

Kimberly: Hello! I'm Kimberly Cayamcela and I attend Science Leadership Academy. In history class students were assigned to interview a voter. Are you willing to answer a couple questions?
Sally: Sure!

Kimberly: Your name please?
Sally: Sally.

Kimberly: What motivated you to come out and vote today?
Sally: Wanting to see change.

Kimberly: I want to see change as well, hopefully we see change within the next four years. Do you know why we vote on Tuesday?
Sally: Why on Tuesday? No I don't, do you?

Kimberly: I learned this in history class actually. Because of people having to put aside for their worshiping days and having a job to go to, Tuesday was chosen as the day to vote. This gives the voters enough time to visit the polls without interfering with their days of worship, job, and marketing days.
Sally: Oh! Thanks for letting me know.

Kimberly: *giggles* you're welcome. Do you vote in every election?
Sally: Yes. I've pretty much voted every opportunity I've had since I was eighteen.

Kimberly: That's good to hear; we should have more voters like you. Are you always sure of who you are going to vote for before entering the booth?
Sally: No.

Kimberly: I wouldn't be either. What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?
Sally: For the mayor to focus more on crime fighting. I hear so many stories on people getting jumped. I think he's doing a great job, but I think the crime is out of control.

Kimberly: I agree. Not only does the mayor need to look out for us a little more, but the people have to be a little more cautious and cooperative. Well, this finalizes the interview. Thank you for your time and have a nice evening!

Interview 1 Mrs. Taylor.

Me: What motivated you to come out and vote today?

Mrs. T: Its my Civic duty.

Me: How is it your civic duty?

Mrs. T: Because many people fought for me to have the right to vote. If I don't vote then all the sacrifices my ancestors fought for would be for nothing.

Me: That is really deep. Is there any thing in the political systems you want to change.

Mrs. T: So much patriotism.

Me: Why do you think there is so much patriotism?

Mrs T: The rich are the one with the money and they rise u in positions.

Mrs T: Why yes I believe I have.

Q: What motivated you to come out and vote?

A: For personal reasons, I am voting because a friend of mines is actually running in this election and I wanted to support them 100% of the way. That is why I came out on this beautiful day and voted.

Q: What would you like to see change in our political system?
A: One more party at least, because I think the turn out results would be better.

Q: Do you vote in every election?
A: No, perfect example of change or turn over. Mostly only primary elections do I place my vote in.

Q: Do you know why we vote on Tuesdays?
A: Hmm I used to know why, Let me think! No I don't actually know why.

Q: Where have you encountered the highest amount of ad campaigning? Radio, TV, print, Internet, other.

A: Presidentially, most commonly I have seen TV campaigning and Ads that are featured on the Internet as well.

1. What motivated you to come out and vote?

My daughter. Just setting out a good example, for her, and her generation. I also came out because it seems as if its my right as a U.S. citizen to do so.

2. what would you like to see changed in our political system?

I would like to see them find a valuable candidate to run against Mayor Nutter. I want to have choices of people that would be willing to run this city in a demanding, organized, sufficient way. I want someone to take control and recognize the poor, struggling areas of Philadelphia.

3. Do you vote in every Election?

Yes I do, even though sometimes I’m not sure who I’m voting for.

4. What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

As a result of this election I hope that more funding comes into Philadelphia, to create systems that would help create more jobs. After this election, I hope to see new businesses created, that would also help promote new jobs.

5. Are you always sure of who you are going to be voting for when you walk into the booth or are you still deliberating?

If it’s a major election, I know exactly who I’m voting for, but for general elections I am sometimes undecided. Mostly, because I am unfamiliar with the people running, such as councilman.

1. What motivated you to come out and vote?

I just wanted to make sure my voice was heard, because one vote can change everything. Every vote counts.

2. what would you like to see changed in our political system?

I want to see actual people of the United States to have a say, in political decisions. Also, I want to see people having a true representation of politics in political parties.

3. What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

Well as of now, economy is a huge issue, especially in Philadelphia. In this city there are so many people that are unemployed, which is a problem. So what I want to see happen is for Philadelphia to get more jobs for people.

4. Where have you encountered the highest amount of ad campaigning? Radio, T.V. print, internet other.

Television, definitely television. T.V. is one of the main assets to persuading a person to vote, due to campaigning commercials, and ads. They are always visible on the screen.

5. Do you vote every election?

I try to, but sometimes small elections I don’t take much importance to, but big elections, I am always there, guaranteed.

1. What motivated you to come out and vote?

I vote because it is my right, and a privilege to do so, as an African American woman of the U.S. Back in the 60’s people have sacrificed so much so that we can vote, and I refuse to let all that hard work go to waste. By voting I feel like I am paying back my respects to the people back in the day, that couldn’t.

2. What would you like to see changed in our political system?

Well, in the begging, before elections even start, I hate the fact that candidates think it would give them more power to explicitly say negative comments about the people running against them. I think that’s fake, and rude. So I think what should change is the way candidates persuade people to vote for them.

3. Do you vote every election?

Yes I do. I do it because 1. I work here. And two I think that every person should be involved in political affairs. We are the people, and it’s the only opportunity we’ve got to say what we want, how we want things to run, its all up to us, for once we have the power.

4. Where have you encountered the highest amount of ad campaigning? Radio, T.V. print, internet other.

T.V., CNN, the news.

5. Are you always sure of who you are going to be voting for when you walk into the booth or are you still deliberating?

Most of the time I am, and if I’m not, once I get to the booth I have a pretty good idea of who I’m rutting for

1. What motivated you to come out and vote?

I feel like its my duty to do so, and my privilege because back when I was a kid, African Americans weren’t given the equal rights to vote, and so to honor my ancestors, and my history, I vote.

2. What would you like to see changed in our political system?

I would like an end to the mud slinging. Which is when candidates say bad, hurtful things to one another, in order to get elected. I just think that brings a whole bunch ciaos for nothing.

3. Do you vote every election?

Yes I do, I never miss an election.

4. What was the most memorable campaign ad that you have encountered?

I thought the most memorable campaign ad was during the presidential election of Obama. Seeing an African American on a screen, running as a candidate to be president I thought was a miracle. Personally, I didn’t even know African Americans were even allowed to run for president to tell you the truth. I just never thought it could happen.

5. What impact do you feel your vote will have on the election? Did you learn about voting in school? If yes. Did that impact your willingness to vote today.

I vote mostly because of self-motivation, but I also vote to make a change for future generations to come. I vote because it is the only way my voice can be heard, and its only through a push of a button. No I did not learn how to vote when I was in school.

Q1: Do you vote in every election?

A1: Yes, every election since I was able to vote.

Q2: What motivated you to come out and vote?

A2: I like to take part in the political process even though it might not make a big difference.

Q3: What would you like to see change in the political system?

A3: The main thing I would like to see change in the interaction between corporations and government. I believe the corporations have too much access into swaying politics. Also campaigns lobby which is a lot of money involved.

Q4: Are you always sure of who you are going to vote for when you walk into the booth or are you still deliberating?

A4: It all depends. I usually vote all one party for the general election. It is a little more complicated one it comes to the primaries because it's hard to research local candidates due to terrible websites because not enough money, though ironically local elections effect the most, in my personal opinion.

Q5: What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

A5: I doubt anything will change but extending existing bike lanes would be nice.

Q: Why did you come out and vote today?

A: Because I feel as though my vote will make a difference. Even though the electoral vote is changing and the government is changing, my opinion matters in every decision that they make.

A: I know it's something like depending on the population in a certain area it depends on how many representatives represent them in the decision for Democrat or Republican.

Q:Do you know why they vote on Tuesday?

A: Truthfully no. And honesty it's a waste, time off from work that I don't need.

A: I do believe that young people should vote. But I don't think they should vote until they are in their 20's. They are just beginning to vote and don't know how to works and their vote might not even count until a more important and memorable election.

A: I live just around the corner

I feel every vote counts and there really wasn't a lot of people voting today so my vote hopefully will make that much more of a difference. I learned about voting from my mom. She reinforced how important it is to be heard and reminded me it is a privilege to be able to vote. People in other countries don't have that capability.

1. What motivated you to come out and vote?

I'm a committee person for the Democratic party. My job is to make sure that people vote, and have the right to let their voice be heard.

2. What would you like to see changed in our political system?

I would like to see the people be more educated about the process of how you become a candidate, and how the votes are tallied up.

3. Do you vote in every election?

Yes I do. Every election.

4. What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

The changes that I'd like to see in this election, would be that the candidates live up to their promises.

5. How would you feel if voting was mandatory?

I would feel that it takes away a person's right to choose to vote or not.

1. What motivated you to come out and vote?

I'm a good citizen. It's my duty.

2. What would you like to see changed in our political system?

I don't really know. There are a few things that I would like to see changed, but I can't think of them all now.

3. Do you vote in every election?

Yes I do.

4. What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

Hopefully, a cleaner city.

5. How would you feel if voting was mandatory?

I would feel uncomfortable. If I knew I had to, it wouldn't feel the same to me.

Interview #3: Judge John Younge

1. What motivated you to come out and vote?

I always vote. It was taught to me by my parents. They're from the South, and they always voted. I didn't know people didn't vote until I got older.

2. What would you like to see changed in our political system?

I'd like to see a city where there is a minimization of money in politics. That the political figures focus on issues.

3. Do you vote in every election?

Yes.

4. What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

I hope we get our fiscal house in order. And that we fix our tax situation, so that we attract businesses and people to our city. All this without harming poor people.

5. How would you feel if voting was mandatory?

This is a free country. With that comes the choice to vote. Maybe if we did early voting, or computerized voting, or maybe even voting on the weekend. Mandatory voting would be against our constitutional right to vote.

Interview #4: Janienne Hinton

1. What motivated you to come out and vote?

To make sure I have a voice.

2. What would you like to see changed in our political system?

More cooperation among different parties.

3. Do you vote in every election?

Yes.

4. What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

More funds for the school system, and city services

5. How would you feel if voting was mandatory?

I'm for it if there's no fine. If there is a fine, I would be against it.

1. What motivated you to come out and vote?

It's my civic duty.

2. What would you like to see changed in our political system?

That both political parties get together to make Pennsylvania a better state.

3. Do you vote in every election?

Yes.

4. What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

Hopefully, both parties get together to change the future of our city and state.

5. How would you feel if voting was mandatory?

I'd feel uncomfortable. To make me vote for someone I don't want or have to vote for would make me uncomfortable.

1. What would you like to see changed in our political system?

My law enacted campaign contribution limits but it's up to the "one person- one vote" to prevail.

2. What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

I will continue to increase economic opportunity in terms of creating new jobs, better wages and benefits as well as business and workforce diversity.

3. How do you think we can improve voter turnout in Philadelphia?

People vote when they believe that it will make a difference.

4. What inspired you to run for office?

I'm the son of a Mayor but also the grandson of sharecroppers who endured economic discrimination - I fight for justice!

5. How do you feel about making voting mandatory?

People should go to the polling place to vote even if they don't like any of the candidates - and there is a ""NO CONFIDENCE" vote option.

Q: What motivated you to come out and vote:
She thinks that it’s important to take interesting in local issues. Most of the decisions that affect us take place at a local level. She thinks that it helps to learn more about our district in Philadelphia.

Q: What would you like to see changed in our political system?
Education, she wants SRC with Mayor Nutter to make sure that voices of students, parents and teachers voices are heard. She's very excited about that.

Q: Do you vote in every election? (How regularly do you vote?)
Yes, she votes in every election (national primaries and local). She would feel hypocritical to not vote when she teaches about issues, and participate in them.

4. Q:Where have you encountered the highest amount of ad campaigning?

She’s seen the most memorable campaigns on the local news…and she’s seen a lot of negative campaigns. It turns her off, and she wants to see more campaigns of what the candidate will do for the community.

She was involved in the Obama campaign, and she felt more of a personal sense to it.

So I interviewed three people on Election Day. One woman and two males. I asked each of them 5-6 questions about their reasons for voting and their opinions on why voting is important. At the end of my three interviews I was given a giant pink sample ballot. Below are the interviews:

Marlene, the first person I interviewed was very confident in her opinions on voting and so I got a lot of information from her. She is an African American female with a family hooked into the government. With 24 years on her belt working for city council she was able to answer my questions with detail and precision. When i asked her why she though she needed to vote she said that "You can't change anything if you don't make an effort to." She believed that if people wanted change, if she wanted change, she had to voice her opinion because her one vote could be the difference in someone winner or losing an election.
Her other reason for voting was that her family was tied into the government. They all worked in city council or had jobs along those lines. That being said, Marlene informed me that she's been voting since she was 18. It was a family tradition to get registered and vote once you turn 18.
When I asked her about who she was voting for she said she always did background information on the people she was voting for and in fact knew most of the people who she was voting for. To her "the person in office is just a voice; a spokesperson" for the people that they are representing. She made sure that person she voted for would be someone who would make decision based on what was best for the people.

George, the second person I interviewed, wasn't as experienced as Marlene, being in his early 20s but he was able to answer my questions. He believed that he along with everyone should vote because every single vote counts. When I asked him why he as an individual voted he said "It's just something I do". It's just something he was raised to believe was required. When i asked him about the person he was voting for he told me that he knew who he was going to vote for before he went into vote and that the person he was voting for, he believed, would be able to change and make a difference.

The last person I interviewed was named Benjamin Prail, and he's been voting since he was 21. When i asked him why he voted he stated that it was his constitutional right and that everyone should be exercising their constitutional rights, especially the rights that people fought so hard to get. He said that he as an individual wanted to make a difference and casting his vote was one of the ways that he could do that. When i asked him who he was voting for and if he knew before he got into the voting booth he told me that he was a little unsure but knew that he was going to vote for someone new. He believed that all the old politicians "aren't doing things right" and that they're all doing things the same. He believed that if there truely were to be change it would only be accomplished by getting someone "fresh" and "new" in office with "new ideas".

Rebuttal Paper

In our campaign to propose this new amendment, we do see where those against it might rebuttal. These arguments directly challenging the mental capabilities of many 16 year olds. Let’s look at the logistics of it. A great majority, if not all, 16 year olds live with their parents. In fact they’re mostly still dependent on their parents. Sure 16 year olds may be able to think for themselves, but don’t have the abilities to be truly self-sufficient. There’s also the responsibility of 16 years olds. While their parents may trust them smaller tasks like watch a their sibling or taking out the trash, one would never give a space of power to a child. They wouldn’t even know where to begin. Voting is a prime example of that; children don’t know the first thing about voting and all that goes on behind the scenes. Also, 16 year olds have many other rights such as the right to drop out of school or in some other states, the right to marry and have sex. (Debate: Lowering the Voting Age to 16). While these are freedoms they can choose express at any time, people against lowering the voting age would response to this: “Just because they have those rights doesn’t mean they should express them.” Debatepedia’s article – “Debate: Lowering the voting age to 16” states: “If all 16 year olds left home at 16 and started families it would be considered a disaster.” Countries much like America save things like drinking alcohol, serving in a military, and especially voting too much higher ages. The streets would be full of drunk and pregnant teens. In fact in the article: “Lower the Voting Age to 16: Pros and Cons” from International Business Times talking about the effects of lowering in voting in other countries. While countries such as Austria, Nicaragua, Brazil, and Ecuador have been successful in lowering the voting age, The U.S. and the U.K. alike have failed in such a process. Now let’s look into other things that could occur if America were to lowering its voting age. If we are to lowering the voting to 16, many states could also advocate lowering the criminal responsibility and consent ages to fit with the lowering voting age. What this basically boils down to is since you have to power to vote like the adults before you, one should be considered an adult as well. So, when you are convicted of a crime, even a smaller crime (theft) for example, instead of being tried a minor you immediately be tried as an adult. What the article states about age of consent is: “The issue of consent is particularly important because it extends beyond consensual sex; in prostitution and rape allegations, if sexual contact is proven and the victim is a minor, the perpetrator is automatically guilty on statutory rape.” ("Lower the Voting Age to 16: Pros and Cons). What this means is if the age were to be lower, the said perpetrator would have to go through a full rape trial instead. Another reason people are against lowering the voting age is because they believe that it won’t solve the problem of voter turnout. A plus of lowering the age is the possibility of increasing current voter turnout. But that’s all it really is, a possibility. ("Voting Age, Lowering: Debatabase”). As it stands, in America, voting is a choice. If you don’t want to vote, you don’t have to. Now considering 16 year olds tend to be more involved in their own problems rather than what is occurring across the country, they would most likely be the tiny percentage of people who would attend the polls. In regards to voter turnout is the political knowledge that many 16 year olds have. For the most part, that knowledge is little to nonexistent on a deeper level. Idebate.org shows how lowering the voting age can be very dangerous. It states that 16 year olds could use their voting power very naively, only voting for the candidate they think is cool or that supports a single issue that care about, not looking at the full picture. ("Debate: Lowering the Voting Age to 16"). The 16 year olds of the present are more concerned with things like instant gratification and getting/fixing something with the least amount of effort. The problem with that is it can create the younger voters into very big swing voters. Say one candidate offers to greatly increase curfew for those 16-17, but another offers to clean up the streets, teens may most likely vote for the first guy because they feel that issue he’s addressing directly effects them, so they care more. But say the second candidate offers to give free cars to all 16-17 year olds with permits; they instantly change their opinion to the second candidate because they’re getting free stuff. This can prove extremely dangerous in America. If this were to happen, America as a whole could potentially be electing unfit people to run our country. This is because the demographic of 16-18 years old is just so huge, if they all vote it could easily outclass all the adults voting, leaving the opinions nearly nullified. The adults of America already have a hard enough time deciding whom to vote for and don’t need ignorant teenagers possibly skewing the polls to an inadequate candidate. Also many teenagers tend to go against the popular consensus just for the sake of being rebellious. Something like is the very last we need at the polls. For example, there are two candidates: one obviously for the job and one obviously not for the job. Where vast majorities of people agree with the first candidate and they see that he/she is out best interests, there’s always going to those teenagers who are against the “status quo”. They’ll simply vote for the second candidate really just because, completely and utterly ignorant to their politics. And finally there’s the viewpoint of not all ages groups are affected by things the government tries to pass. Things like healthcare and social security are things that children should know about but it’s certainly not something that they should be worrying about. Things like that are handled by the parents or guardians, and for the most past when parents vote, they take their entire family into consideration. ("Voting Age, Lowering: Debatabase”)

Reflection Questions:

· How did you group go about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?

- We figured we should attack a subject that would directly affect us, that being letting 16 year-olds vote. While the object topics are just as important, we felt(or least I did) a more personal connection to the project.

· 11th grade Essential ? - What is the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change?

- The role of the individual can be two things in my opinion: either create change or deter it. For nearly ever individual trying to make change for the better, there are most likely just as many individuals trying to stop that change.

· How has your understanding of the electoral process and whether or not the US is a democracy evolved during this unit?

- I know so much more than I did before. I never knew that this is so involved with more than just the presidential candidates on the ballot. I feel like if I’m ever going to vote I’ve got to know my stuff.

· How did you decide to best relay a message to a national audience with your marketing campaign?

- We decided to go to the audience we are trying to help, teenagers like us. Rather just saying all the positives of letting us vote, let’s see how they’d feel about it.

To me, we just started naming possibilities out loud and what we could possibly do for the those possibilities. In the end we decided to go with the one we thought we could do the most for/ have the most fun with.
The role of the individual in creating and sustaining change is to be conscious of their opinions and to push to get them heard. Whether it's voting, protesting or attending a neighborhood committee meeting, I think an individual should get their ideas out there the best way they can to cause change and remind people why the change was made to sustain it.
I didn't know what the electoral process as before so I now know what it is and I understand what it is. I think I now know of ways the US is definitely a democracy and how certain laws and things can prohibit certain groups making sort of betray its democracy.
I believe we decided to make it simple, yet entertaining (with Kamilah's song). So we basically had something that could catch the eye with the simple logo and then had something that could hold the attention of the people with the song.

How did you group go about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?
Well we waited until we were together in class and then we split up. We worked on our parts separately, but we did come together when we had to review our stuff.

Well i didn't know anything about the election because it didn't really apply to me. I found it interesting that hardly anyone votes and that it is actually difficult to vote.

Well we wanted to make it appealing to everyone. Like we made a song that would appeal to the younger voters and then the print ad was more serious and that was supposed to appeal to the older voters.

How did you group go about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?

Our group came together and decided that it would be between making voting mandatory or to change the electoral college process. We then took a vote and it was decided to do mandatory voting.

The individual is responsible for bringing new ideas to the whole system to allow new ideas to be brought into a reality. Individuals also come up with ideas to keep change sustained with new laws and mandates.

Well I used to think that the US was a whole democracy and that every vote mattered. However after this unit I realized that not every vote will matter in every state because of the electoral college process.

We decided to make a semi-patriotic ad to tell people to get out and vote as well as a song to inspire kids to talk with their parents about voting.

To start everything off, my group just had their own ideas of what we wanted to change. Our list at the beginning was: Removing Electoral Colleges, Changing the voting age, and making it mandatory. First off, everyone else was already having a mandatory voting weekend - so that wouldn't be interesting. Secondly, we would have to change many more things in the law if we changed the voting age. So the one we were left with was Electoral Colleges.

Individual change in America begins when one truly understands and believes in the thing they want to change. Everything begins with knowledge and research. You can't enlighten others about change you'd like to see and have nothing to tell them. If you try to enlighten people about Mac vs. PC, for example, and you have never in your life used a Mac - your points following are then invalid. (Because we all know, Once you go Mac, you never go back)

I didn't really have a background on the learning process before this unit. Before, I thought "You go into the poll and press some magical button and it goes into the computer." But then when I went, I realized it was a pretty long and time consuming process. But it's okay because there are MANY voting polls around the city of Philadelphia.

I thought the best way to relay my message was follow through like Rick Perry's Ad Campaign. Show what's going on now and I showed how things will be if things DO change. All we need is change and if we get that, happiness will follow along - of course.

1. We did decision making in our group by trying to find out what interested us all, and figuring out how we could accomplish it. We at first decided if we wanted to make a change based on who it affects: basically, we had first decided upon where we wanted to target our change. At first, we wanted to make a mandatory class that was based upon voting and its importance but than we found out that it was unconstitutional. Then, Ms. Lauf helped us with the idea of voting age instead. We went with changing the voting age to 16 because of the place in society that 16 year olds have.

2. The role if the individual creating and making change is perhaps that most important thing in the world. It is what starts revolutions and inspiration for others to do the same. It is also a symbol of courage and also the role leadership. It takes someone who is strong enough to see their ideas through and tor want to stand up against anyone who opposes them. Also, it is also seeing yourself relative to the world. At times, we may just seem like another number on the demographic, but we have power like if we really try.

3. My understanding of these matters have evolved in a way that I now view the US differently. I now see that while the voting process isn't really complicated at all, I see that the way that we decide who votes is a bit skewed. We don't 16 year olds vote even though they pay taxes, and they are punished as adults though they don't get the rights as so.

4. I decided to market my position paper mainly by using a guilt tactic. I stated every reason as to why 16 years olds should be voting, but reminded the reader that they are not. Also, I used language that was fairly uncomplicated and could be understood by middle school students at least. Using this universal language gets the point across better, and hopefully more effectively.

How did you group go about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?
- Well after coming up with a few options (all equally good), we cut the ones we felt were reoccurring around the class, and went with the least popular option. That being extending the voting days to one day during the weekdays, to the weekend. After deciding, everything else went pretty smoothly.

- In regards to the project, we all wanted to change the voting turnout to have more people in the United States. My position in this process was taking a good idea, and finding the flaws within it. Because if I didn't, other people would exploit it during conversations. With proper knowledge about the flaws with voting on the weekend, when someone else tries to find a flaw, we've already found a response for it.
How has your understanding of the electoral process and whether or not the US is a democracy evolved during this unit?
- Absolutely. For my portion of the paper, I had a lot of percentage rates and population counts. And after finding exact numbers for voting turnouts for the past few years, I'm really disappointed with how we've been doing things. Where other countries have 98% turnouts, the United States is still struggling with a measly 29%. And after seeing that only 1/3 of the United States votes, it was pretty shocking.
How did you decide to best relay a message to a national audience with your marketing campaign?
- I'm not necessarily sure if I'm answering this correctly, but within the final project we made it very "cheesy." It's still professional nonetheless, but the cheesy factor is clear. With information easy to understand with a funny little slogan, I have a feeling people would be interested after hearing about what we want changed.

How did you group go about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?
We wanted to focus on something serious that would make people get out to vote. An easy way to get the voter ratings to increase. So, we came to the conclusion that making voting mandatory, that would drastically increase the percentage of voters.

I think that the role of the individual, is to stick to what they believe in. The individual should continue to do what they think/know is right without being influenced by others. They should also have a positive influence on others in their community, and those around them.

How has your understanding of the electoral process and whether or not the US is a democracy evolved during this unit?
When we first started the unit, there was so much to take in. When we started the benchmark, we all jumped to the conclusion that mandatory voting would be beneficial to the voting. However, after doing the election day interviews, it made me realize that even though mandatory might help the voting percentage increase, it is against people's constitutional rights, and many aren't comfortable with it.

How did you decide to best relay a message to a national audience with your marketing campaign?
We wanted it to be straight forward. We also wanted to make sure that we were able to clearly get our point across. So, for both of our creative pieces we had bright colors and a big font size.

How did you group go about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?
Our group focused on several of the points highlighted in the information on voter turnout. We found that several people of lower income and status chose not to vote. Their reasons for choosing not too were unknown but what was known is that voting is extremely important. We saw reports that other countries who had administered compulsory voting had a higher voting percentage then ours. That's why we decided to focus on compulsory voting.

The role of the individual is to create a successful environment which many can agree with and believe in. When creating change it is also important that the person is passionate and believes in their ideal. To sustain change the person must be persisten in their ventures for change.
How has your understanding of the electoral process and whether or not the US is a democracy evolved during this unit?
It has changed because in my opinion, I feel that America is still a democracy but in a way these restrictions go back to civil rights times in the 60's. The government says that they're trying to prevent vouter fraud but there has been very few cases of voter fraud. It seems to me that they are attempting to keep certain groups from voting.

We decided it would be best to make our video as interactive as possible and to engage people with our print-ad. We felt that it was best to try and make them as interesting as possible because it is important.

How did you group go about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?

My group and I kind of collaborated our ideas, until we all agreed on one topic. This focus seems to be our main focus because I think we could of relate to it.

Everyone was given a responsible to get their part of the project done effectively, and the SLA core values seemed to fit will into the process of our individual work that we all provided into a finished completed project.

My understanding has grown better about the whole electoral process. I have learned many things with this benchmark such as how the process of voting is done and how candidates are elected.

My message to make to the audience was done through my campaign ad. Through my AD I tried to get the message out with a simple message and with creative colors and pictures to grab the attention of the audience.

There are four individual parts a position pointing out the best of our idea, a rebuttal paper that points out possible flaws and points of argument. My group was Stephen Holts, Tenzin Ngawang, and Sasha Sapp, and myself. We picked our topic by saying the first thing that came to our heads. We did this because we didn't want to spend time arguing over the subject and wanted to get right on to doing the work. I personally decided to do one of the papers because I'm good at writing. This project was in accordance to one of our 11th grade Spanish "What is the role of an individual in creating and sustaining change?". This project to me was about educating the future voters and politicians of America. We did research to understand what changes could be made and why the general public might or might not support. We were making the core of a campaign and if we actually wanted to fight to let 16 year olds vote this is where we would start. My previous idea of how America worked was that they counted every vote that came from every citizen. That idea changed after I learned about the Electoral College and how it works. I think that America is still a Democracy it’s just “The lives of a lot are in the hands of a few” kind of democracy. One thing we did to try to make it more relatable to a general audience is by having a spokesperson or a face of our campaign “Kathleen”. Kathleen is a 16 year old and represents a mature educated portion of 16 year olds that want to vote. Other then that we did all four of the core parts and made a good functioning website.

My group first brainstormed what we thought were good ways to improve voting percentages. We narrowed it down to making more days to vote and mandatory voting, and then we chose one. We chose mandatory voting because countries with mandatory voting have much higher percentages than the United States. We thought that this would be the best way to increase the voting percentage. After this we worked with Jeff to come up with a slogan for our whole benchmark. We focused on how the voting percentages of the United States are so low compared to many other countries.

I think the role of the individual is to realize that they need to change, and then do it. Change is much better if the individual is the one who realizes that they need to change. Change is much less effective when someone is told to do it, because that is much different than coming to a realization that something is wrong.

I used to know that voting wasn’t exactly majority, but I didn’t realize how unfair the Electoral College is. It makes me think that voting should be a majority for it to be a democratic government. It also made me realize that we have the choice to vote, but if we don’t take advantage of that freedom it be a lot worse for the country.

We tried to show that there have been very small voting percentages in the past few years, capping at 61%. We said that with mandatory voting that if a person didn’t vote, then they would be charged a 100$ fine. We capitalized on this point, because a lot of people will choose to go out and take the time to go to the polls, rather than paying the fine.

Here is our project

Here is my individual work

Somethings that we knew were important to our project is the appeal of our audience. We knew that since our over all goal was trying to change the 26th amendment, we would need to have material that catered to the younger people of America. Therefore in our papers, and our visual ads, we tried to use things that would both appeal to the younger and older portion of youth. I wrote the position paper, Ryan wrote the rebuttal, Paige created the Print Ad, and Jakobi made the video. I can say that each individual role really showed in our project, in a positive way. In some way each individually assigned aspect of the project correlated with one another, and I think that shows the impact we all had on each other's work. My understanding of the election process in this country, and overall democracy, has recessed. You can write about something you might not necessarily care about, but when you start to actually reflect on that topic you get a better appreciation for it. In this case I am talking about youth voting. In this time in america, it is imperative that everyone be heard, everyone, including the youth. Again, I think that our group took a simple enough approach that anyone/everyone in our demographic could understand what we were trying to convey. Although most of the thoughts of the individuals being interviewed in our PSA were about the same, there was one conflicting idea. One person stated that they wouldn't feel sure enough that they knew what they were doing to vote. They simply thought that they weren't experienced enough as a citizen to make a conscious decision about something that needed to be changed. Overall I would say that we certainly appealed in a smooth convincing way, without using any material that would be to difficult for anyone to understand.

How did you group go about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?

First my group and I brainstormed a list of things that we thought would cause ourselves along with our peers to not vote. We then narrowed our list down to our top 3 topics, and then decided to focus on the Electoral College since no other group in our class chose to do so.

I believe that in order to create and sustain a change you need to find other people who believe some of the same things you believe in. Once you've done that you can pretty much educate other people which can help persuade them to invest in your cause and hopefully create the change you wished to create.

2. How has your understanding of the electoral process and whether or not the US is a democracy evolved during this unit?
Because of this unit I've learned about ways Americans don't take complete advantage of their freedoms. Their are people who would literally die to be in America and have the privilege to do something as little as vote for who is in charge yet, most Americans don not do so.

3. How has your understanding of the electoral process and whether or not the US is a democracy evolved during this unit?
I actually have learned a lot about these things during this unit, so I would say that my understanding has drastically increased. Before this unit I had no idea of half the things that has happened, or is happening here and in other places. It feels really good to be informed and aware of whats going on.

4. How did you decide to best relay a message to a national audience with your marketing campaign?
As a group we basically decided that it would be best to inform people of all the negative things the Electoral College was causing and how voting would be a lot more fair with out it. We explained how an electoral candidate could have more votes from the United States citizens and still lose the election because of the Electoral College.

Here's the Entire Project and All It's Awesomeness

My group sat down the first three days of class and all we did was brainstorm ideas and focus points on the project. We let ourselves be limitless in the possibilities we suggested to each other so that we didn't feel trapped to only certain types of ideas. Once we got all our ideas out in the air we threw out all the ones we all agreed were really not going to work. Then we narrowed it down to the two ideas that we really liked and decided between those two.

After an overall theme was decided on, we all divided up to do our individual parts. We all had a role to make something that was done well enough to inspire change. As for myself, I was challenged to put together a song and video that would encourage voting in a creative and captivation way. Doing the song took me out of my comfort zone because I usually don't like to sing for an audience and for projects. (Extremely self conscience about how I sound). Despite the insecurities I got through the song and video pretty okay by my own standards.

This entire project and its process has really evolved my understanding of democracy in the US and the electoral process. I realized that there are a lot of different opinions on voting and reasons for voting. Many people will argue that people fought hard for voting rights and that we should be more conscience of that. Others will argue that because we have the right to vote by choice, we can chose to not vote and not be persecuted for it.

Our group decided to make voting mandatory and the way we enforced it, was a gentle forcefulness.

How did you group go about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?
The group talked about our strengths and we then decided who should do what in the benchmark. We came to a conclusion without a problem. Then we all talked about what we think is the most effective way to get people to come out and vote, and we all came to an agreement that making voting mandatory would be the best possible option.

The role of an individual in creating a sustaining change is by making themselves heard and enforcing something to change something.
How has your understanding of the electoral process and whether or not the US is a democracy evolved during this unit?
My understanding about the electoral process has allowed me to see that the US is losing it's right to really be called a democracy. By taking away the ability for people to vote you are keeping out important votes that could make the vote as best it can be. If there are voices unheard, then they can't make a difference. Having voting day on a day in which some people can't make it too and restricting it to one day makes it nearly impossible for some to vote. It is against the rights of a US citizen if you ask me.
How did you decide to best relay a message to a national audience with your marketing campaign?
Well, my job was to make a video and advertise mandatory voting. I went about my process by thinking about what people like to see. I made a flashy and cool intro that would grab the attention of anybody watching. Then i showed a graphic that showed how unemployment has changed over the last decade or so. My goal was to have the viewer see that we have gone down the wrong road and the only way to change that is by voting and making a change, and having those unheard voices heard.

People in jail who are serving prison sentences should not be give the right to vote in elections. Prisoners should lose their rights to vote when they have committed crimes and are serving prison sentences. We believe that voting is a given right. When elections are coming up it is optional to go to the election polls and choose whether or not you want to vote. Even though it is highly recommended it is optional. Since it is an option and a right to choose what we want to do, prisoners have that option and right revoked from them for disrupted and assaulting the rights and laws in the Amendments and Constitution. When they break the law they are proving to themselves, the law, and the people that they are not productive members in their society. And when they aren’t productive members in their society, what contribution will they do when they are determining mayors in our cities to picking the new leader of our country.

In the beginning of the process there was only two people who were present, so we just decided to bounce off an idea that involved family members of friends. So it was personal but also something that we had a strong opinion about.

The role of the individual in creating and sustaining change is learning the background before making the change to determine whether the change is drastic or minor.

My understanding of the electoral process and whether or not the US is a democracy evolved during this unit is that not everything is far when it comes to government. What might be right for one person could be totally wrong or doesn't work for another person.

How I best relay a message to a national audience in my marketing campaign is by making it aware to people across the nation. So my group decided to make a twitter page talking about these issues and giving an insight to a more major issue.

How did your group go about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?
Well, I was absent the day my group chose what the focus was going to be for the project. I would have chosen something different than focusing on felons, perhaps giving the right to vote to immigrants or sixteen year olds. But, throughout the project the thought of giving felons the right to vote grew on me.

The role of an individual in creating and sustaining change is: being able to point out what is needed to be changed within oneself- not by having someone else point out what is needed to be changed- as well as sticking to what they choose to change by believing in oneself and not giving up.

My understanding of the electoral process was not as enhanced as I hoped for it to be. I didn't question voters about the electoral process because when I interviewed them they seemed to not be interested in politics. But, I feel as if America is losing its label of being called democratic. The voter turnouts through out the years have not been high. This project helped me realize what kind of people it is that don't have the right to vote. If America is a democracy, everybody living in this nation should have the right to vote!

I was in charge of writing the position paper. In the beginning I found it difficult to write it due to not agreeing to what I had to write about- how felons should have the right to vote. When I think about felons I think about all the crimes I can possible think of. I started out with "they shouldn't be able to vote!" to "they should be able to vote!" after my research. And so after actually agreeing with what my group said, I began write the position. What I tried to include in the position paper as best as I could was facts to support the main idea. I thought that by doing so the audience would be convinced and agree with the idea of giving the right to all felons of voting.

As we sat down as a group, our conversation focused on changes we would like to see concerning voting. We all agreed that we would like to see the voting age be lowered to at least age 16, making it possible for teens to vote. We believe that if 16 and 17 year olds vote a wider majority of issues involving young people will be addressed.

The main goal of our project is to convince the public that more teens should be allowed to vote. In order for an individual to create and sustain change is to have a voice in the change process. Voting is the only way to make a difference all the times.

After completing this project my understanding of the electoral process has improved dramatically. I now understand how much decision making, and preparation that goes in to election day and voting. Learning all the information that I have about voting, I still believe America is a democracy, because everyone has the opportunity to take part in the decision making process, but the problem is the government adding new voting requirements.

In this unit I learned that there are so many different reasons why people come out and vote. The overall reason was to effect change in their community. I also learned that the process in which will allow people to vote can effect voter turnout. Having Tuesday as a voting day , opening the polls at 7:00am and closing at 8:00pm limits the amount of people that can vote. Some people work all day and cannot find time to vote.

To create a message to reach out to a national audience, we thought it would be best to create a video, and print ads, to show what we are trying to persuade people to do. In the video and print ads we thought to use slogans, and pictures, and the thoughts, and opinions, from real teenagers to make our ideas and points come alive.

How did you group go about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?

How has your understanding of the electoral process and whether or not the US is a democracy evolved during this unit?
How did you decide to best relay a message to a national audience with your marketing campaign?

The process of deciding what to focus on was an interesting one. My group just began discussing voter-ship and what we personally thought would affect it. We all had a different viewpoint so it was a bit of a challenge. My group originally wanted to make voting mandatory but two other groups were doing that. We went with "Weekend Voting" instead.

The role of the individual in creating change is singular. Most times two people have the same idea, but the role of the individual is the vital one. Being able to think up an idea, develop it, recognize its flaws and attempt to reason why it works better than another is how positive change comes about. Once that process has taken place within one's own mind does the idea lend itself to be shared and worked on with others.

Voting and how the US does it has never been something I thought about, honestly. This unit has forced me to think about some of the major flaws in the democratic system and just how they could be fixed. Before, I assumed everyone voted and was surprised to learn that was not the case.

For ours it was showing the flexibility of the voting. America's busy, so we used that as the campaigning piece. Have Time to Spend? Vote on the Weekend

A: Yes I do. Like I said earlier it cuts time out of work.

A: No, because I'm not into technology since I'm older. But yes because it would be more convenient to other people.

Q: Do you have any comments for people who aren't voting?

A: Just go out and vote. It might be hard but in the end your point will get across and your voice will be heard.

Here is our project

Here is my individual work

Somethings that we knew were important to our project is the appeal of our audience. We knew that since our over all goal was trying to change the 26th amendment, we would need to have material that catered to the younger people of America. Therefore in our papers, and our visual ads, we tried to use things that would both appeal to the younger and older portion of youth. I wrote the position paper, Ryan wrote the rebuttal, Paige created the Print Ad, and Jakobi made the video. I can say that each individual role really showed in our project, in a positive way. In some way each individually assigned aspect of the project correlated with one another, and I think that shows the impact we all had on each other's work. My understanding of the election process in this country, and overall democracy, has recessed. You can write about something you might not necessarily care about, but when you start to actually reflect on that topic you get a better appreciation for it. In this case I am talking about youth voting. In this time in america, it is imperative that everyone be heard, everyone, including the youth. Again, I think that our group took a simple enough approach that anyone/everyone in our demographic could understand what we were trying to convey. Although most of the thoughts of the individuals being interviewed in our PSA were about the same, there was one conflicting idea. One person stated that they wouldn't feel sure enough that they knew what they were doing to vote. They simply thought that they weren't experienced enough as a citizen to make a conscious decision about something that needed to be changed. Overall I would say that we certainly appealed in a smooth convincing way, without using any material that would be to difficult for anyone to understand.

Reflection

How did you group do about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?
- Well, we first started off with an idea of having a law/amendment saying voting is mandatory but that wasn't possible. Then we changed to having classes to educate the citizens about candidates and telling how important it is for everyone to vote. That failed as well because no one has time for that. At last, we came across an idea of having 16 years old, to be able to vote.

- I think the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change is very important because if there weren't for different changes, where would the world be?
How has your understanding of the electoral process and whether or not the US is a democracy evolved during this unit?
- When we first started, I was completely and utterly oblivious to the election day. I didn't know what really happened during the day, I just knew that we had the day off from school. After the interviews and getting a little knowledge of how that worked out, I am more conscious than ever. I learned how important it is vote and surprising new fact, very very few citizens participate in the electoral process in America.
How did you decide to best relay a message to a national audience with your marketing campaign?
- I made a print Ad. I didn't want it to be too informative (crowded with words), but something that was simple and got the message out, Loud & Clear. Something that was creative and got people's attention right away by the bright color yellow and big words, that popped out.

We had a lot of trouble coming to decisions. We argued a little until we got down to 2 ideas. Once we were got down to 2 ideas we we decided to do a national holiday.

My individual was to make the video ad. I enjoyed the part and it was really fun.

I understand that we were trying to get people to vote since we are a democracy. We decide on everything. If people don't vote then the resident is wanted by only a part of america then the whole as a nation.
How did you decide to best relay a message to a national audience with your marketing campaign?

I decided to message the people about National election day the way I felt best represented what we were trying to do. I also wanted to add voice speeches in to attract more people and to get them angry. The pictures go with what ever someone was saying or what the screen said. The music background was suppose to provide something to keep the audience focus and not dozing off.

I used physical format firstly because I like to make things with my hands. Making it this way, writing the prompts and making it fun was easily the best way for me to understand the assignment. The idea hit me and I knew it was the one because no one else was doing some like this.

The EQ I picked is 'What causes systemic and individual change?'

2 sentences

The format is symbolic; the choices of an individual dictate an outcome and result in change of systems. Secondly, it is game where strategy and responsible choices determine whether the change is beneficial.

I would still like to understand monopolies. I get they are big companies, but I would be interested to learn more about how the money comes in and goes out of them. Also, the stock market and why it "crashed" exactly is quite unclear to me still.

We chose these because it could easily show the steps that it takes for an individual or group to obtain systematic change. We answered the first essential question, saying that there are three steps to cause systemic and individual change. The first step is the forming of the idea, the second is spreading the idea, and the third is execution of the idea, so that the change is present. I still wonder why all of these bills and attempts don't fix the big industries, or keep them not as large as before.

Our collage displayed the different things that the Presidents have done, so achieve "change". The change that these presidents, as individuals have accomplished during their presidency, has shaped the way things are handled in the United States today. 1.Explain your choice of presentation
Our groups choice of presentation utilized both of our strengths. I personally really like the cleverness of political cartoons and thought it would be really fun to think of something equally as witty and clever with the knowledge we've gained from this unit. Also my partner is a really good artist and so the two went hand-in-hand. For the FDR cartoon both Obama and FDR thought it would be better to teach citizens the skills to work and not just hand them money. So we made a connecting thought bubble and a caption changing the meaning of FDR to force driven revolution. This connects to our essential question "what causes systematic and individual change" and that would be getting people to work together, and giving individuals the tools to work with. Our second cartoon is a joke off of Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt and how he passed acts to break up major corporations. This process pulled America together and broke the abuse from major corporations and trusts on the general public. We made Obama say this because it is similar to the issues of the Occupy movement.

What causes systematic and individual change is the recognition of equality. That one doesn't prosper at the expense of another but to succeed we must bring the lowest part up before moving an entire group.

I chose to present my reflection through the form of a power point. Using the format of a ppt. presentation I was able to clearly convey a central topic, and historical events that helped support the overall theme of the presentation. For the observer, I wanted them to be able to be drawn directly to F.D.R, as he had great significance in developing change in the United States, during one of the country's most struggling times. The vivid color (green) was used almost as away to display the hope that F.D.R restored in the United States people. The first page encompasses the most important thing that was created by and under F.D.R's presidency, The New Deal. With the central point being a picture of an old New Deal flyer, with a brief description of it's primary function. After that in both directions, two pictures follow. One of the CCC or Civilian Conservation Corps. And another that is an advertisement for the Social Security Act. Both were pivotal additions to the United States foundation, and helped the country greatly during the time of the Great Depression.

Going a little deeper than what we learned in class, I believe that F.D.R was/is the greatest example for assessing the role of an individual in creating and sustaining change. If one were to look at F.D.R's case of polio, they could see that the president had to strive to be strong for his people, to give them a hope in themselves. Many things were held into affect even after F.D.R's death, and many presidents should strive to be more like Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the future. His own will and courage propelled F.D.R to lead the U.S through the great depression, becoming one of the most beloved presidents ever known. Not only dead he begin fighting the depression with the New Deal, but he sustained the effects of the New Deal, always putting in hope of the American people.

Theodore Roosevelt

During my presidency I noticed something that I couldn’t quite understand. I noticed a massive range of businesses who controlled such a high quantity of manufacturing from things like railroads, oil, and even meat. With meat, for example, I sent out a friend of mine to a meat packing industry. His response letter back painted a horrible picture. He saw that dead animals thrown aside and lighting conditions were terrible. Yet with these terrible conditions, the investors of these companies are doing extremely well. This needed to be changed, I couldn’t outright eliminate these companies, but instead control their actions. These monopolies can’t be good for America. In reaction to that, I’ve enlisted many antitrust acts to break up these giant superpowers. A notable one was the Standard Oil Trust. We were able separate the conglomerate that was Standard Oil, into much small companies. This way there was no longer one massive force controlling simply one object.

Franklin D. Roosevelt

During my presidency our country was one of its worst points: The Great Depression. The economy was downtrodden and jobs for the average American was an adventure in and of itself. So when I became president I proposed a “New Deal” of sorts for my fellow American citizens. First I started the Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration to somehow bring life into America and get this economy back to what it was. But that wasn’t enough to save the American people from where they were. I also created the Wagner Act and Fair Labor Standards Act to instill more organized labor into America with things like minimum wage.

Barack Obama

In presidency, I noticed that American companies have made a major mistake. In recent years, they’ve outsourced their work to foreign countries such as China. Well why? Well I think we’ve all figured out by now, it’s simply because it is cheaper to give the jobs to foreigners who well work for much cheaper. This needs to stop. Today in America, Americans are struggling to find jobs in a economy trying to come out of a recession. To solve I propose this to American companies who outsource, bring the jobs back to America! American companies should have American workers shouldn’t they? Instead of focusing more on a profit, American companies should focus on advancing the economy back to it’s majesty. Outsourcing isn’t going to be thing that gets America out of this recession.

1. Explain your choice and presentation format.

- I chose a monologue format because I was working alone and wanted to just represent myself as the three presidents in a sort sequential order.

2. Answer essential question.

- I think it takes a serious injustice in the eyes of the individual in to create lasting change within a system. When someone as powerful as the president himself sees great injustices, he has everything in his powerful to see this change come through.

Decision and action cause both systemic and individual change; decisions are made on the account of an individual and the actions made by the individual affect both the individual's system and the individual themselves. In changing the system, the individual is also changed.

Systemic changes come about from a person or persons who put their will into action, and decide to take necessary step to make a difference in the world that they live in.

3.One thing that I still want to know: Just how much will giving more benefits to smaller businesses do for the economy? If they are newer, wouldn't it be harder to start up anyway?

I chose to use a keynote because I feel like it's easier to display my ideas in a way that the viewer can understand. It's also very good with showing different visuals, and if presented correctly, can get a lot of attention.

I feel like the individual needs to be able to persuade others that change is needed. More often then ever people are opposed to change, even if it’s in their best interest.

I feel like I still don't know how America as a whole feels about this topic.

Michelle and I chose to do a video explaining the views about the essential question of “What causes systematic and individual change” and by providing a video is how we felt would be a creative and fun way to provide our expressions and answers relating to the question. In the video Michelle and I placed the question into a discussion between the current president and the government and relating it to past historical presidents and their policies in relations with the government to make change for the future.

My partner (Jakobi) and I decided that we would try to express our project in a format that we don't have a ton of experience with. That would be Prezi. Learning how to navigate the website took a little bit of time, but we knew that the overall presentation was worth the five minutes of figuring out how to operate it. We chose to have a visual theme in a way that showed the process of not only decision-making, but the way ideas circulate and expand before reaching its full potential. We also showed the challenges to both individual and systematic change. We used examples from Teddy Roosevelt and Barack Obama as a basis to show that regardless of the time, the same general concepts and process remain the same.

As a unit, we brainstormed about systematic change first through the basic mindset of fact. Meaning, in general, nothing happens without thought. As a person develops those thoughts, they begin to present them to other people, but there's a confidence and faith in personal opinion that allows a lucid flow of systematic change. In our project, we said, "The judicial, legislative, and executive branches of government embody the means of the people. The executive branch cannot make change alone, but with the agreement of other branches, they create the policies, and shape of America."

Some further questions I have on Business in America are:

-What is the balance between business and government besides financial agreements? In reference to things such as health care and how far the government should intervene in personal life. How do the business respond and manage that type of pressure in those fields?

We used Obama's speech for a systematic change and George Bush's crack addition. We used a power point because it is simpler and it still gets our point across.

“What causes systematic and individual change”?

- What causes systematic and individual change is depending on how passionate someone is about a certain topic or idea. Systematic change comes from a group that can agree on something that will either be better or worsen the community. Individual change comes from a person that is willing to take that extra step to change something about them that will help their community.

We decided to go with this form of presentation because it easily showed the steps in which it takes for a group or an individual to obtain systematic change. We were able to answer the first essential question and said that there are three steps. The first step we agreed was forming the idea, the second is getting the idea out there and getting it known, and the third is the execution of the idea, so that the change is present.

We chose to make a documentary about the Model T because we believe that the assembly line “modelled” mass production today. We don’t think we would live in the society we do had it not been for Henry Ford’s revolutionary tweak on an older production method. We tried to imagine a world without the assembly line as Ford designed it, and we agreed that it wasn’t a very happy place. We imagined a time where no one had what they needed because they people that were in charge of making those things were behind due to making everything the “old fashioned way”. A world without mass production isn’t a very American one.

The recent events that have occurred on Wall Street have sparked an interest in Alex and I. Both Alex and I were fascinated around the entire idea and so we decided to take up the challenge of looking back and investigating the history of Wall Streets protests. The ideas behind the protests, the reasons that they happened, the reasons why Wall Street was such a hot destination for protestors were all things that caught our attention and our eagerness for learning. Since the theme of this years National History Day was revolution, reaction, and reform, we felt as though using Wall Street was the perfect topic to use for the theme. Through the long history of Wall Street, there have been many revolutions, which has resulted in reaction and thus reform.

After finding our topic, we both branched out and studied a lot about Wall Street. We studied the history of it, we studied documents, and compared past protests to later ones. We watched videos and documentaries on Wall Street. We really wanted to make sure that we fully understood the diversity and complexity of Wall Street. We found that Wall Street is more then just a place where people go to trade stock.

After we finished researching as much as we could we decided to meet together and share our ideas together. We used our collaborative research to create a published piece of work. After much thought we decided that a website would be most effective at displaying what we have learned. We split up the tabs in the website according to the century that the protests occurred. We decided to include a timeline page with a very useful map that we found. It allows the viewer to go to different locations where protesters occurred and read a little bit about them and also see the year that they occurred. It was a nice useful and interactive feature for the viewer.

Revolution, a radical and pervasive change in society and the social structure, especially one made suddenly and often accompanied by violence. Reaction, action in response to some influence, event, etc. Reform, to change to a better state, form, etc.; improve by alteration, substitution, abolition, etc. These three terms are simply the way Wall Street works. Perhaps something happens and the people want change. This creates a revolution, in which a reaction is only inevitable, and thus when the reaction gets noticed there is reform, a change. Wall Street is a place where stock is traded, money is gained, and is essentially, a spotlight for the United States.

For the 3rd quarter benchmark, we chose to make a documentary on the Space Race of the 1960s and the reformation ,revolution, and reaction of the American people during this time in history. Regarding the literal scientific evolution of humanity, the Space Race was vital in propelling humanity into the future. In being a sci-fi fan/aspiring scientist myself, I would constantly here the scientific community talk about the good ole’ days of the 1960s when everyone cared about space. During the decade, the American people were immersed in a national consciousness regarding beating the USSR to space. It was very easy to see how the Space Race changed the United States. It gave the citizens of the U.S things to dream about, and offered new insight on how science and mathematics can be looked at upon as a positive in schools. We did not include this in our documentary, but the mass production of personal computers really did diminish the love for search and discovery in the United States. Most scientist agree that after the cancellation of the Apollo missions ,and the progression of American life after 1970 came the true end of science in space.

The topic for my paper is the revolution of women’s fashion and rights in the 1920’s. I’ve always had a love for fashion and when I went looking for a topic, I knew that I wanted fashion to be apart of my project. The NHD topic for 2012 was Revolution, Reaction and Reform and there was a definite time period in American history where fashion was revolutionized; the 1920’s. Women began to revolt against their typical roles in society and they began cutting their hair and wearing make up. I also noticed that in correlation with that time period began a period of revolt by women for women’s rights. I began to compare the two revolts and I cam up with my own theory that they were very closely related and that women’s fashions inspired the women’s rights movement.

He enlightened people’s questions about how and why physical objects behave the way they do on Earth. The atomic bomb’s equation, also known as Einstein’s “E=mc^2” was a profound discovery of the 20th century. Although that discovery was both great and destructive he has made the theory of relativity, which changed the way people think about time and space drastically."

Originally, our topic was going to be fashioned around the idea of kids and fast food, and how it’s damaging their health, but we came into recognition that the NHD theme has to be in correlation to a revolution, reaction, and reform, in which I felt as though wouldn’t fit into the NHD theme criteria. So we decided to analyze another topic, one that would stay within that similar boundary of kids, and fast food. For our 3rd quarter history benchmark, the students of Ms. Laufenberg's class all participated in the National History Day. The idea behind NHD is that each student researches a famous part of history, gathers both primary and secondary sources, then completes the project in however they see fit. The theme of this year's NHD was, "Revolution, Reaction, Reform." Therefore, each student had to take a part of history that had to deal with somewhat of a revolution, a reaction, and then the reform to see where it is now. And I took it from the perspective of one of the influential people in the United State's history; Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and how with his nobel leadership, discriminated minorities were able to overcome the struggle, and become equal to everyone else.

What went well?
- Our collaboration and process went well, as we all collaborated to present different data in the inforgraphic. It was also very easy to decide on how we were going to present the information. There were really no conflicts with any of the group members.
~I do believe that our infographic is an effective one. It shows all of the horrible things that happened to real people because fo the disaster.

What did not?
- Our infographic could have had a better design, our picture got across but we could have expand the infographic with additional picture and text.
~One thing I think we should have done better was include more information about the destruction. We focused more on the things that happened to the people, but some information about the disaster probably would have made this better.

What would you do differently next time?
- Try to focus on a different aspect of the Love Canal Accident.

a. What went well?
-Coming up with the the idea for the info graphic was the easiest. I came up with the idea to use the iCal photo and the pictograms.

b. What did not?
-Figuring out which data to use and what was important was difficult as well as sourcing it. We found the population one day and then couldn't find an accurate source the next.

c. What would you do differently next time?
-I would use some more data to paint the picture of what happened. I mean the numbers are there but not enough to evoke an appropriate emotion.

d. Specifically comment on the 10 tips for effective infographics -

Be Concise- it is concise with very few words

Be Visual- the whole thing is visual using picture to show numbers

Be Smarter- not sure about it this one

Be Transparent- the data is there and easy to understand

Be Different- we used the ical calendar as a clever way to show about W.R. Grace cleaning up

Be Accurate- the data is mostly from the EPA

Be Attractive- it's colorful

Be Varied- we sort of vary, using pictograms and a pie chart

Be Gracious- not sure about this one, I guess we didn't do it?

Be Creative- we utilized different methods using the pictograms

Why do you think some elements of design were easier or harder to include in the end product?

It was easy to just use data but it's hard to paint the picture with few words. I am a wordy person and that was a challenge for me.

a. What went well?
- We all worked together and we communicated well. Even when we were stressed with other class' benchmark projects, we still managed to do our own part of the work done.
b. What did not?
- I don't think there were anything that didn't work well. But I guess we had difficult trying to post the actual work on the thinglink because the file was too big. However, we sorted out and we got our product!
c. What would you do differently next time?
- I can actually say that I wouldn't do anything different than what we have now because I'm very proud of our final product. It's very professional and creative (in my opinion).
d. Specifically comment on the 10 tips for effective infographics -

Be Concise - I hate to admit but we have a lot of word on our final infographic but the main things are the ones that are in bigger fonts so, it kind of makes up for it.

Be Visual- Ours is very visual and on point. The colorings are meant to show that way. We have rocks to represent lead etc.

Be Smarter- Before this mini-project, I was completely oblivious to the fact that such an event occurred. I learned a lot of things.

Be Transparent- The infographic talks about the event and its effects on people. It doesn't go in depth with every single details but it shows the important ones in a bigger font.

I think the final product turned out well. Dan and I worked together well out of and in class. We worked pretty hard, and I think it paid off in the end. One thing that wasn't so great was teamwork throughout the group, we had 1 member who didn't really contribute to the product. Some of the class time wasn't used wisely when there were distractions, but it was mostly used well. Next time I would choose a different way of portraying this information, maybe using pie charts or other methods. I would also make sure to use all of the class time effectively.

I think that we were good at being creative, because we showed parts of the accident that other people might not have thought about. I think that the project was concise, not using very many words, and having a lot of images. I think that it was somewhat attractive, because our images are interesting, and cool to look at. Our project could be more transparent, because it's not that easy to tell who, what, when or where. Also there is only 1 government reaction on the info graphic. It was harder to make the who, what, when, where, how, and why because it would take away from the info graphic if it was obvious, and the info graphic wouldn't make sense if they weren't included. It was hard to think of a unique design, but once it was thought of and planned it wasn't that hard to make

What I think went well was the amount of teamwork, and cooperation that we had. I think that as a group, we meshed our ideas together, and divided the work well and evenly.

b. What did not? Actually not too much didn't go well. But I guess the only thing was our file gave us a bit of problems, but we solved that.

c. What would you do differently next time? Next time, I would definitely change my timeline, and try to have less text on it. Perhaps changing structure of it.

I think we excelled when it came to being smarter, transparent, varied, and attractive. I believe we excelled in there areas because our work was divided evenly, and we each shared an equal role in the design. I think we were very transparent will the point of the info graph, as well as having a nice supply statistics and images to further the understanding of the text. I think that it is attractive because of our colors that we chose, and how they relate to the drilling that happened in the town- hence, all of the brown. I don't think that being concise and visual was represented as well because not all of our fonts are exactly the same, and we had a lot of text. I think that we could have organized the text differently, and that would change the visual effect on the reader. I do think that it was harder/ easier to represent some of the elements of design because it vary depending on the type of topic that you have. I believe that visuals are used in specifics ways, and some ways may not be as universal as others. For us, I think that it was harder being completely visually creative.

A few times, there were a few communication disputes, but they were quickly resolved. Other than that, I feel that we were pretty successful.

For me, I feel that if we did the infographic on a site that all of us could edit on, everyone would be able to take part in actually working on the visual, instead of having it on one computer, and having one person actually put it together.

I feel that our research went well and so did our decision making. We knew what we wanted on the info graph and we knew how to represent the information. We never argued and we all contributed. Some contributed more than others, but we all did something. Our procrastination wasn't so good. We were distracted at times and that prevented us to get our work done earlier. Also my computer was slow and took forever to put the graphic together. I would add more information and more information about PCB. I feel that we didn't have much about the history on Monsanto. We could have also incorporated more real life photos.

Be Concise

We tried not to use a lot of words. We wanted to use more pictures to describe what was happening. We hoped that people would understand it with a quick glance.

Be Visual

We had a lot of pictures that told their own story. We do have some sentences, but we just tried to use phrases. We picked a theme and colors, that we tried to keep consistant through out the graphic.

Be Smarter

I thought that our graphic was clever and well represented. I don't think it is perfect, but it is good.

Be Transparent

Our graphic was a little not clear at times and if i didn't make it, I might not understand what was going on.

Be Different

Our graphic has a different theme than others. We used used blue throughout. We tried to have the least amount of words and others had a lot.

Be Accurate

We did tons of research and tried not to use any sources that looked unreliable.

Be Attractive

I feel that it is well organized and the color makes it appealing to the eyes. It might be a bit crowded, but I think it looks fine.

We used a variation of ways to display the data, like we tried to tell a story with the fish and showing a scale with the randrops.

We used tons of pictures and used different ways to display the data. I thought that we were creative with the way we approached the assignment.

Our work ethic was great. We all worked together and researched information. Unlike the other catastrophes, this sludge spill was minor and did not have much argument behind it.

Finding a way we were going to portray the information was the difficult part.

I wouldn't do anything differently except perhaps, if I could, pick a topic myself according to my comfort zone. I feel as though the topic we were given didn't give us much to work with. I think complexity is key. The more information one has, the more effective the info graphic will be.

Be Concise- To be brief but not give little information.

Be Visual- To not include too much writing but images.

Be Smarter- Must be helpful, informative, and entertaining.

Be Transparent- To make our focus point obvious.

Be Attractive- The info graphic must be eye-catching, not boring.

We excelled in almost every factor of having an effective info graphic except for the, "Be smarter" portion. I think we could have done a better job incorporating all the information we found rather than just focusing on the damage of the spill. Some elements of the design were easier than others because, depending on how "on topic" the information was to our main topic (the damage of the spill), we couldn't include other information we researched, such as: how the government responded to the spill, or how the area is today.

We did pretty well with figuring out what to do with the information, once we looked at some info graphics. However, it was hard to be original while keeping in mind that we have to include statistics. It was a challenge to be different, because we're doing something new, based off of things we're already seen. Being creative and different intertwine, because creativity wise, we were basically mimicking what we saw. The conciseness of the project wasn't horrible, it was just hard to find information. Being gracious was also quite a challenge, because we wanted to have a piece of information come from every group member.
We excelled at being smarter when it came to this project. We easily found ways to make the information transparent and accurate. The attractiveness was one of the easier tasks to do well in, because we're constantly working on projects. We know how to make things look visually well. A lot of the information did vary, making the reader have an easier time digesting what we were trying to show. The visual as a whole is good. You can conclude that there was an asbestos outbreak throughout the years (the pie chart), and the amount of people/homes it affected (shown in the ratios).

Something that went well with this project is that we were able to break things up evenly and assist one another here and there. We each became experts with a certain time frame of the accident and were able to summarize each part to the whole group.

The only flaw in our project was that it was hard to incorporate everything into a visually appealing project. We only displayed the event and what was harmed/killed, but we didn't get to incorporate how it happened or how it was improved because it was just due to lack of preparation for disasters.

Something to consider for next time is adding more information or show symbols for things on how it happened or what was going on.

The areas we excelled in as a group were graciousnss, visual appeal, transparency, accuracy, creativity, it was different, it was concise, and it was varied but not repetitive. The areas we didn't represent so much were the knowledge we learned wasn't portrayed in the infographic as much as it should have been because it was hard to incorporate it into the project in an appealing manner.

This is a info graphic that shows the lead contamination in Picher Oklahoma, considered by some to be one of the top ten of man made environmental disasters in America. During process, each of our group members worked well together. We all stuck to our timelines and shared the work evenly. Personally I am content with the final product and how the work was divided. One thing that didn't go well was the information. The information we have is good but I feel we could have looked for more factual information and made graphs with it. One future consideration would be adding more graphs and numerical information to replace the words, the kind of statistics that speak for themselves. There are many important qualities in in effective infographics. A couple of these included being concise, visual, smart, transparent, different, accurate, attractive, varied, gracious and creative. Our end product has many of these contributes. It is visual and transparent, in a way that it is well organized but not boring. For example the whole thing was about mining and much of the information is under the shadow of a town that shows creativity and reinforces the situation. Easily organized for the viewer to view. For information, our statistics are accurate and on ThinkLink.com they are cited. A couple of contributes we did not show as well, were gracious and varied. It's hard to be particularly gracious in this situation, finding a balance between showing sympathy for the those effected by the situation and stating the hard core facts about what happened, and we could have chosen more mediums for our information. Overall though, I am pleased with our final product.

a. I believe the overall research went well. We found a lot of statistics and different things that we could potentially use for the info graphic, so there was a lot of freedom when deciding what to put and what to not put.

b. I believe when it came to putting the right information into the graphic we fell short. We have things that resulted in the oil spill, but not so much how it was caused or what happened afterward. I believe we needed to include more of this in the info graphic.

c. I think I would include more information about the before and after, we included a lot about what happened because of the spill, but not so much how they cleaned it up, how long it took and how much oil is still there (according to some of our sources there is still some oil remaining in the area).

d. I think we excelled in "be visual" and "be transparent." I think the "be varied" and "be smarter" elements were not as well represented. I think the "be varied" and "be smarter" elements were not as well represented because when it comes to variation, if there is too much variation things can look sloppy and they will not be consistent. So when it came to variation, it was hard to add as much due to the fear of looking sloppy or the info graphic being hard to understand. I think when it came to "be smarter" we didn't want to add too much information because it would have been overpowering and maybe even cluttered. If there was too much information, it may have been harder to understand and read.

Deeper research wasn't abled to be found with this topic. I feel as a group we weren't about to find more informative passages rather then pictures that we were able to add on to our project.

What would you do differently next time?
Primary researches involving our topic and maybe even a scale to keep our progress on point. I even think we needed an extended amount of time because design wise our graphic could have been improved.

I think what when well was the fact that there wasn't much argument about the design of it. We didn't have underminding ideas and we worked together to make it look very neat and creative. We tried to keep the information concise and to the point and i think we did that well.

Nothing really went wrong or bad. We got a little of task at times but we got out project done with all (iThink) of the required components. If we were to do this project again, the only thing I'd probably change would be the colors because I'm really picky about that.

The ten tips that we got were very helpful to our presentation and we really tried to use them. The main ones we focused on were using contrasting and popping colors, and keeping the text easy to understand and read.

We found information on our topic very easily. It was easy for us to research what we wanted and our brainstorming and collaboration went very well.

Next time, we would use paper and pencil so that we could specifically plan out the way we wanted our info-graphic to look. As far as things that went well, the gathering of the information played a key role in the completion of the final info-graphic. Assembling a good list of primary sources was crucial for having good facts and information, and because we had them, the final product was able to be a lot better. Also, changing things around and using a google.drawling came out pretty well, too. In regards to things that didn't go too well, are simply the spacing in which we completed our checkpoints. Lauf specifically said we'd only work on it in class, but there were times where we'd have to do some parts for homework simply because we couldn't afford to be behind in class the following day. Also on the topic of process, we did finish literally in the knick of time, because by the time class ended, we just put the finishing touches on it and submitted it. What I'd do differently really just goes with what didn't go well. And that's the process. I'm a little curious because all in all, we did a fairly good job with the process given the circumstances (people being absent, days without class, etc.). So all I could suggest is that next time, we'd have to be on top of the classwork and make sure that come the next day, we wouldn't have to work on anything outside of class.

Be Concise - We didn't use too many words, but relied on using pictures and graphs to relay the information.

Be Visual - Similarly, the majority of the info-graphic is comprised mainly if pictures, graphs, and keys to demonstrate the facts and information gathered.

Be Smarter - I'm not necessarily sure how "smarter" we could have made it, but as far as information is concerned I suppose we did a "smart" job.

Be Transparent - Similar to being concise, it's just specific data without too many words that shows the information we've gathered.

Be Different - Though the difference factor played a role, I feel that what we did isn't too out of the ordinary. We applied many different styles of explaining the information.

Our group was fairly successful at the research portion of the project. We were also respectful of each others opinions and abilities.

2. What did not?

Our time management wasn't as wonderful as it could of been. Communication wasn't that solid either. I can't help but think that our final product would have been better if we were stronger in these areas.

3. What would you do differently next time?

I would have spent less time looking for appropriate vectors, and more time on the actual design of the info graphic.

The orientation of certain elements in our graphic could have been formatted better.

We searched diligently for usable vectors for the graphic.

What went well?

I think what went well was the group contribution towards the project. I also liked how our group were doing things on time checking in with each other. I think overall our communication was very good, and when doing a group a project I believe that’s very important.

What did not?

I think what didn’t go well was the fact that we had so many websites that it was hard to figure out what information should be included in what. It was very hard to narrow it down.

What would you do differently next time?

If I could do one thing differently I guess I would’ve organized the websites better, and learned how to professionally do an info graphic to make it more decorative.

Be Concise: I think our project was concise

Be Visual: Our visual I believe was good, it included the information that it needed and the requirements that were needed.

Be Smarter: I think we could’ve added more information or could’ve been more detailed and specific in certain areas.

Be Creative: The info graphic could’ve been a little more creative. I believe we could’ve added more wording, more color throughout the project.

I believe we excelled in making our project concise, and making it with a variety of pictures.

I think our creativity wasn’t shown in this particular project, but overall our project I believe is well developed and straight to the point.

Why do you think some elements of design were easier or harder to include in the end product?

I think some elements of design were harder to include in the end product because we weren’t necessarily use to working with info-graphics, so creating something different I guess was a little more challenging.

"American Dream" In The Future

This is a picture of the "American Dream" in the future that will soon turn into a nightmare. In the past few years, the amount of teenage pregnancies have gone up dramatically. Kids are having kids which made them learn to grow up fast. In the population of the people is increasing also due to kids and adults having kids that they aren't financially stable for, the competition has gone up for education, jobs, and living the average "American Dream". In my picture, I was describing that the next decade will care more about electronics, Facebook, Twitter, non-social interaction with people and worship that more than morals that America was set on. Also I believe that the more females there are pregnant and since America is a debt, than dads won't be around being there and not giving money which will have more single moms. Also since the population is increasing there won't be enough room for every kid to go to America. So most kids won't have that opportunity to be that one step ahead because of the actions and consequences of others.

What if? US History Benchmark

This is a picture of one of the primary sources I made for our "What If?" project. The "What If?" project is mostly a creativity project where we can create an alternate future that occurred due to one specific change in American history. We then would need to create three primary sources to validate a future where this event had happened. Finally we then tie all three sources together along with three other real sources prior to the point of divergence into one final product. For my final product I made a website for a museum that featured American History for the alternate future. One can access this website by clicking here.

For my project the main idea was, what if Napoleon Bonaparte never sold the Louisiana Purchase exclusively to the United States? My point of divergence was when Napoleon was considering to sell the Louisiana Purchase he asked his council for advice. In real history the council disagreed with him and he sold the territory in spite of them. However in this alternate future his council agreeded with him and so he considered the full possibilities of selling it to the other neighbor of New France, Spain. He ended up selling it to both to get more money, in this way it created much tension between the US and Spain, which turned into a war for many years after.

The alternative future would then be very different. The main difference is because of the increased contact with Spanish culture a much larger percent of American society speaks Spanish. In addition the united states is in a constant state of alarm in preparations of any kind of violence from Spanish troops. The two countries in the current day are at a cease fire much like North and South Korea. IN addition to this there is also a heavy Native American influence on American culture. Because Native Americans were never moved out west they were forced to interact with colonists and the mix of culture was more evident in society.

I had mixed opinions about this project. I like the creativity aspect and the ability to explore a change in history. It shows that the smallest of moments can change the future greatly, and it really helped with noticing how important small changes have been. The process for this project was simple I stayed on top of my work and did everything in a timely manor. It was challenging to make primary sources look old.

I really enjoyed this project. The topic of my project revolved around the Space Race; previous history states that USA had captured German rocket personnel, giving them the advantage to win the Space Race (Landing on the Moon first) against Russia. My point of divergence for this project was "What if USA captured decoy German rocket personnel."

Through my point of divergence you will see complete chaos and total change for what the USA and Russia has become for 2012. I briefly explained and tied in primary sources, both prior and post, to my point of divergence. The future that I envisioned of my POD was for the Russians to land on the moon first. Nevertheless, the USSR to remain together and would become the most wealthiest economy in the world due to their findings on the moon. Also, the USSR would gain partnerships of other countries (China and Japan) to support them in creating advanced technologies for the market.

I liked everything about this project, specifically the creativity and openness we were given to choose what we wanted to do and how we could create the final product. The most difficult aspect of this projects was successfully tying everything together in an appealing matter. Also, creating primary source documents were difficult because of the detail required to connect with my POD.

My point of divergence was governor Alfred E. Smith from New York winning the 1928 presidential election instead of Pres. Herbert Hoover. President Franklin D. Roosevelt blamed Pres. Herbert Hoover for starting the great depression and therefore, I chose this as my point of divergence. I liked this project because you could actually choose any topic you want and you get to change something small that twisted everything. I chose this topic because I wanted to know more about the Great Depression because I don't recall myself learning about that time period in any of my classes. I just heard it was a really mournful time period in US History. I researched and learned that Herbert Hoover was the protagonist, he was the president during great depression and he was blamed for it. So I asked the question, what if the presidential candidate who was running against him during the previous election, would America had to suffer the great depression time period. The other candidate was either Alfred Smith or Calvin Coolidge and I realized that Calvin Coolidge withdrew himself from running as a president after his son's death. I debated whether to chose Calvin Coolidge rather than Alfred E Smith multiple times as my point of Divergence because Calvin Coolidge was an interesting character. Therefore, if I were to do this project again, I'd choose Calvin Coolidge as the president during the great depression era. The most challenging part of the project was the final product, I didn't know what to put and how 2012 would look like because of my point of divergence. The most interesting that I came across through my research was the great depression occurred a decade after the roaring 1920s. Roaring twenties was a time period when America was on the top of the world, America was known as the richest country in the world. However, a decade after, Americans were loosing job, they couldn't afford anything. The unemployment rates increased up to 25 percent, which is a lot, millions of citizens were losing their job.

My project is about the decriminlization of cannabis. My point of divergence occurs when Jimmy Carter decides to make an appeal to Congress to decriminalize cannabia. This occurred near the end of his presidential term. Due to this, the Drug Enforcement Agency refocused to attack the drug cartels shipping other narcotics. This not only led to the taking down of several cartels, but also to a reduced incarceration rate from his term onward. His bold move and promise made on the campaign trail was followed through and states have now began to tax marijuana. This has led to much more beneficial development in urban areas as well as reduced budget deficits.

In my project, my point of divergence is that Germany did not have to pay for all of them war crimes after World War I. The article 231 of the Treaty of Versailles had never been written and an alternative article: article 239 had been passed in its place. After my DOV, Hitler never took over Germany because Germany didn't go into the Economic turmoil they went through. The Communist Nation of Germany had taken over, and Joseph Stalin from Russia had become that ruthless dictator of Europe. World War II had never began and the Cold War was amplified. Since World War II never happened and Germany didn't split, a lot of Germany's scientists didn't come to the US. This lead to the USSR winning the Cold War and the United States handling the Cuban Missile Crisis wrong; which ultimately lead the nuclear destruction! Ultimately, I enjoyed this project because of the broad topics we could pick from. The one thing I especially enjoyed about the project is the freedom of what I wanted to happen after my DOV. I really enjoyed researching about Joseph Stalin and how ruthless, and an overal bad leader he was. I feel like Hitler extremely impacted the future and how it changed. I could improve this project by making the transitions a lot more fluent and crisp, maybe with a little bit more time I could of done that.

I fully enjoyed working on this 4th quarter "What If?" benchmark. I have always been interested in immigration, and so I chose to focus on immigration. My Point of Divergence was Manifest Destiny. I changed historical events that had occurred in the year 1845; the Annexation of Texas. I killed the 11th president of the United States: James K. Polk. I did this by making James Brown Clay, son of Henry Clay assassin, causing events like the Annexation of Texas, the Mexican American War, and the Mexican cession to occur. I envisioned the result of this change would decrease the importance of immigration today. Mexicans would not be entering the U.S.A., suffering from poverty and corruption. Their lands would have been filled with abounding goods and no troublesome would exist today.
What I enjoyed about this project was that we had the chance to select a historical event as we wished, rather than being given what to do. Each individual was able to produce a product of their creativity. Oddly enough, I did not find this project to be challenging. I thought that I would have difficulties in comprehending the historical concept of it, but all went well. If I didn't understand something fully, I would simply watch a documentary or search it thoroughly and then add he information onto my final product. The most interesting event that I investigated was the Mexican American War. When I watched the documentary "Mexican American War" on the History channel what caught my attention was this quote:"If he bullied Mexico enough, Mexico would give up their lands." It's crazy to me to see how America supported Polk's decisions of war.
Decisions lead to more decisions, as do problems. A decision within a decision-decision inception! A historical event leads to more historical events. A decision in history is done accordingly to the finalized first decision. For Instance, in James K. Polk's presidential campaign, he makes promises and ends up keeping his promises like his promise to annex Texas, but that results in the Mexican American War. Yes, decisions in history are very influential indeed. Systemic decisions impact historical records by giving a result accordingly to the decisions that are made. I believe this project could be improved if the project was assigned earlier in the quarter. This project is very time consuming and with Summer kicking in, it's difficult to put on my thinking cap- at least for me it is. If I had the power to do this project over again, I would have worked on the project day by day, rather than all at once. I crammed in doing my research, when there was no reason for it if I worked on it week by week. I just felt that I wouldn't comprehend that a part of me said that I had to research everything thoroughly and not miss anything; it made me research many things all at once.

My point of divergence in the US is that Rachel Carson, the biologist whose book, Silent Spring helped push forward the environmental protection effort, and combated the use of a dangerous pesticide DDT, instead never switched her major. From my research, I found that that Carson had originally planned to have an English, but later on switched to biology. Without Carson being the voice against the environmental impact of DDT, I envisioned the future to have all of the results of the use of DDT- but ten-fold. There were 3 major things that I decided would come about from the excessive use of DDT: 1. Malaria would be eradicated. When looking for DDT sources I came across several sources that ask the same question that I pose. Apparently, those sources spoke of a Malaria free world if the pesticide had continued to be in use. I saw a graph that showed a very sharp decline of deaths of malaria, but then an even sharper increase after the brief decline. I concluded that Malaria is directly affected, so Malaria would have to be gone in the world DDT is still used. My second major thing: the prices of fish are sky rocketed. My third major impact is also within my second. The fact that fish prices are so ridiculously high is because their aquatic habits are contaminated with runoff containing DDT. That is explained when the character I portray say that she can't even swim in the ocean. The result from the contaminated water is that the majority of the fish have died off, making them endangered. Yet they are still for sale (greediness of humans anyone?).

Those were important details in my portrait of the future. I can say that I wish I had made my video journals look more...personal. I wanted them to look plain and seem almost impromptu, because I was supposed to be a random spewing of thoughts. Hence the reason why I didn't add things like transitions and stuff. I wish I could have given my character a more personality of my own- I hope remnants of myself didn't shine through too much. So I think if I were to do it again, I would make a person dramatically different from myself.

Aside from that, from this project I've realized the immense impact that little events have on our world. It makes me think of all of the world's great and evil leaders- how much things would be different if these people took different roads in life. I'm aware that we would would live in an entirely different world. I also realize that our world is the way it is because of the same people stayed tenacious and never let go of the vision that they had in mind. Mind you, that can be good or bad. Though regardless, it teaches the ever-repetitive lesson, "never give up", which mostly lives up to the praise that it receives.

What If? History Benchmark: Changing Free Press

In 1733, German-American printer named John Peter Zenger accepted an offer from James Alexander to publish his editorials criticizing New York's governor at the time. Alexander founded the New York Weekly Journal and published the first issue in November of 1733. The Governor being criticized went by the name William Cosby. Cosby attempted to have the publication shut down several times with the court's help, but eventually put out a 50 pound reward to the person that could identify the authors of the editorials and order Zenger's papers to be burned publicly. With the help of his attorney general Cosby issued a warrant for Zenger's arrest. Zenger spent 8 months in jail. Cosby attempted to select jurors himself, but that was dismissed and twelve townspeople were picked.

The trial began in August of 1735 on the terms that the paper was producing "seditious libel". It was true that Andrew Hamilton, of Philadelphia, Zenger's lawyer had no law to support his idea that the truth could be defensive for a libel charge. The trial could be said to have been the most famous 'jury nullification' in history, which means a jury has the power to serve verdict of 'not guilty' because the disagree with the current law rather than actually believe the person is not guilty. Needless to say, the jury did not make a judgement on the existing law or the facts, but what they thought of the law itself. This is thought to be the building blocks for Free Press in the Bill of Rights.

My point of divergence is that the jury does rule a guilty verdict and the existing British law is not challenged.

I liked being able to pick something I was interested in. I had the freedom to choose a topic that conceded my because I am a journalist. The whole project was interesting in that way, but the jury nullification is what I find interesting. As well as the fact that Zenger was just the publisher when we never wrote a single word. He did not set out to be a champion of free speech, but simply a printer doing his thing.

The individuals in this situation seem to make the impact but it is really the individuals joining together as the jury and as the public in a print protest of the power they disagreed with. Free Press is a systemic change. If this was the only thing to be changed, I believe someone or some people would have eventually made free press happen but countless other things would have been affected in the mean time.

The resonating changed I thought about was elections. If press were not able to use their privilege of reporting facts, even when unpleasant the results of many elections could have changed.

If this project could have been improved it would have been to find more sources. It was very difficult to locate primary sources from the 1730's. Honestly, if I had more evidence I could have used more.

If I could do it over, I would have done even more. I like the idea of the magazine, but there isn't much content. Because I am a journalist I didn't like feeling as if the project was only half done with a single photo, article and cartoon.

The point of divergence was when Ronald Reagan was nearly assassinated on March 30th, 1981. He was shot in the lung right outside of the Washington DC Hilton hotel by John Hinkley. I changed this event and made the shot fatal (in the original event was inches away from his heart) and Reagan dies after surgery. The future I imagined was a bright one, Reagan ruined America's economy because of his famous "Reaganimics" plan that only benefited cooperations( the rich). I believed that George H W Bush wouldn't have choose the same plan, but would have just raised taxes. In the future since George W Bush is never elected we don't go to war with Iraq, which only helped our economy. For 2012 the economy is stable and prosperous. The education system is incredible because America did have a surplus of money to give towards education.The only problem in America is the amount of homeless families that has continuously grew because funding for welfare is modicum and very selective.

I enjoyed learning about the Reagan policies because I didn't realize his presidency was so pivotal in American history. He changed a lot about the economy and foreign relationships. I thought the most challenging part was deciding how to present the project because their was just so many ways to do it. I also thought just thinking about a different future was difficult. I thought that researching how each individual event and person affected another event that would ultimately change the future was extremely interesting.

I felt that any change will effect the future , even if it is just a small impact or huge. For example if the systematic change was that "Reaganomics" never happened, our economy would not end up in debt. I felt the same way about individual change because as I showed in my benchmark with the absents of Reagan our future was completely different. Well one decision can change everything, for example Bush made the decision to fight a war, which hurt our economy. If Bush would have made a different decision than perhaps Americas finanical situation would be completely different.

I thought that if i had a timeline in my project that would help with describing the future. I tried to include some of the history in my magazine like I would specify which president helped that event happen. The timeline would have just added that extra bit of understanding. If i had to do my project over again I would have done way more research and started it earlier, not to say I didn't spend hours just reading about the history, but I also feel like I missed some important events. If I would have started just a week earlier then I would have had more time to do research and create the best project.

2. Al Gore would become president and instead of everything going downhill things would get better. Like the war wouldn't last as long as it did.

The point of divergence of my project was that G.M.B. Dobson, creator of the photoelectric spectrometer dies of influenza in May 1927. Through his invention, the world learned about the ozone layer, and the harmful affects that it has on humans. Media erupted with news about the ozone layer depletion, and what that meant for safety precautions. Things such as sun screen were invented to protect the UV rays from damaging our skin.

But what if these things never happened?

The world would be in an entire frenzy. The world eventually would die off from skin cancer. Research shows that skin cancer has a specific strand that can imbed itself into DNA, therefore passing it on to other generations. The vision was that anyone over the age of 50 definitely has skin cancer, because there was no sun screen, precautions, etc. taken to prevent these things from happening. That also means that all the generations below also have that strand of DNA. The life expectancy decreases, along with the population, and the world looks similar to the movie I Am Legend. The major difference is that, there are no zombies. The way that strand gets into DNA was one of the most interesting things I learned from this project.

The historical records of G.M.B. Dobson are very few. There are pictures, but very few quotes besides magazines. I had to rely on text book information and things such as that to gather extrapolations. This individual changed the system of life we know of today. Even though the ozone depletion didn't stop the world from continuing to destroy it, but at least everyone is aware of the concept of Going Green.

If I had to do this project over again, I would change the way I presented the radio show. I liked how it looked for the website, but if I had the help/resources I needed, I would have recorded a live radio show, and made it feel more real. However, I already had a listening piece, and I thought the audio+video approach would go better for the website. Overall, I enjoyed creating my final product. I wish I could have shown more pictures of "present day", but I didn't want to take too much from previous movies or clips to express that. I would rather the viewer have the option to picture a world so small that everyone knows each other.

What If? Q4 History Benchmark

My point of divergence is during Paul Revere's midnight ride. There is a point in which he came across a couple of British officers on horseback and had to evade them. He really had managed to, but I changed it so they had actually caught him. As a result of this, the future I envisioned is the United States remaining a British territory and potentially being called British America. This came to be because Paul Revere was making the ride to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock that the British were coming to arrest them due to their involvement in a potential rebellion. Since Paul Revere never reached his destination, I made it so Adams and Hancock got arrested. Adams was an avid leader when it came to the rebellion and Hancock was an rich and influential man (who was going to be elected to be President of the Continental Congress the month after he escaped arrest), so I made it so that when people heard about them being arrested (due to being exposed by a British spy, who had reported to British General Thomas Gage) they began to get suspicious of everyone and could not organize themselves enough to start a full-on rebellion.

I liked that this project called for a little bit of story-telling and gives a view as to how a butterfly effect can happen. I think the most challenging was making the story believable; there could be many loopholes of what could have happened instead of what you want to happen and you have to be sure to cover everything. The most interesting fact I uncovered was that Samuel Adams, John Hancock and Paul Revere (among others) were all a part of a group called the Mechanics who organized rebellions and plans to achieve freedom from the British and that there were really spies in their midst. In fact, the only reason why Adams and Hancock were to be arrested is because a spy discovered that they were powerful leaders who lead rebellious attacks and were a danger to British rule. The spy reported to General Thomas Gage, and he organized their arrest.

The actions of individuals impact the historical record because a lot of history deals with a group of people and a leader or numerous leaders. Whether or not the people follow a leader affects the course of history and the side the people are on also affects history. If a leader didn't step forward to guide people, then the majority would probably be afraid to step forth and make a change. Systemic changes impact the historical record because systemic changes is what usually leads to a change in the people, in general. For example, one of the reasons colonists began to retaliate against the British is because they were being taxed quite obscenely and though they were being taxed, they weren't being represented properly. They didn't want the high taxes or want the Acts the British tried to pass that taxed them, though not directly (as the Stamp Act had), and so they started to fight against their rule and the colonies started to establish their own mini-governments. One decision could change everything in history, especially if the choices are worlds apart. One decision could impact how things are handled and what happens to certain people. The decision hold even more power if it is from a very influential person who is high on the social ladder.

I think the project could be improved by giving us a set presentation style. I feel like I didn't really know where to go when it came to presenting the project and I wasn't entirely sure as to how long it should be or if I was adding things that weren't needed. If I had to do it over, I would read the history around the revolution (and that time period in general) because though I knew a lot about it, I wanted to go back and check everything and in the end, I actually had to alter my point of divergence and explain a lot of history that I didn't expect to explain.

My point of divergence, was focused on the 2000 Presidential Election. If there was a different ballot system for the election (specifically in Florida), there would be no confusion amongst voters, and there would be no mistake when the votes were being counted. With there being no mistake, there would be no reason for a recount of votes. Thus, the outcome for this election would be that Al Gore would be declared the winner of the election. I envisioned our country with lower taxes, and less pollution. I kind of got these ideas, from things that Gore spoke about in different debates and interviews. These are only two of the things that he was passionate about, and I felt that it would be important to include these. I also believed that our country would begin to become more Democratic than Republican.

I liked that for this project, we were basically changing history the way we wanted it. I thought that was pretty cool. The part of the project that was the most challenging, would probably be finding the three existing sources. I felt that I should focus more on Gore, being that he was the one that was going to win for my project. Since I had to look into what actually happened during the election, I was reading a lot about the number of votes each candidate received, and the popular votes they received. I think what was interesting, was that many people afterwards believed that Gore should have actually won. It was interesting to see how these numbers all affected the outcome of the election.

The actions of individuals for my topic, was that it changed a whole election. The election could have come out one way, but due to the mistakes made by certain individuals, messed up the outcome. I feel that one decision can impact history in many different ways. For this project, the Supreme Court's decision to do a statewide recount affected the possibility that Gore would become the president. However, whether the decision is good or bad, the impact it can have on history is major.

To improve this project, I think that maybe there should be a little bit more time to get everything together. It's not that this was a benchmark that was extremely hard, it's just that it was a very tedious assignment. I also feel that there should be a project description given to us when we start the project. The benchmark contract served as somewhat of a guide, but when it came time to put the presentation together, I didn't know if there was something I was missing. If I had to do this project over, I think the thing that I would change about my process, would be the way I presented everything. I like the way I chose to present my information, but I couldn't decide how I wanted to present. I was going to use Prezi, but that was taking too long. I was also going to use a website named SlideRocket, which is kind of like Keynote/Powerpoint, but I realized that my sources wouldn't fit. So, I decided that pages would be the best way to present the information that I compiled.

Brought to you by 50 Minutes News, this documentary gives a brief history in the alternate version of the world, where computers are a highly debatable topic. Should they be used for fun, recreational games, or to protect this great nation?

German civil engineer Konrad Zuse, created a series of the worlds first programmable computers called the Z1, Z2, and Z3. His invention was critical in the world of computers. Possibly without his contribution he would have never built a programmable computer, delaying the current technological society we live in. The reason he even came to invent the computer was because he was working for Hitlers Nazi regime in Germany. He was experiencing with calculators, punch-tape computers, etc. and ended up making the Z series. In history, I have changed the fact that he ever worked for the Nazi regime at all. Before he was called up to service the party, he was working in aviation. Surely Konrad would have invented things that were beneficial to the progression of aviation in society. Because he was never called up to service, the programmable computers birth was delayed, also making personal computing in the later 20th century, a very controversial topic. In reality, by the 1960s people were already doing amazing things with the peripheral machines, and computers were also being used greatly for military. But this was because the idea of programming your own computer was commonplace. Without Konrad Zuse, the military were dominant and restricted certain civilian use of computers. We still see the companies like MITS, Apple, and Microsoft try to push the personal computer experience. When I mention the "computational revolution" I am talking about the fight between the military and commercial use of computers.

My point of divergence is figuring out how technology and how much impact the world would be in if Bill Gates never had contact with his first computer? The future that I envisioned resulting from the POD is making the future more advanced. From not having Microsoft created, most of the advance technological things that we have would not exist and the big companies projects would be as updated as they would be. For example Apple with touch screen phones or XBOX 360 and other game consoles. What I liked about the project was that we were able to think and research about a topic that we always wondered about and asked questions about. What was challenging was finding out actually information that can back us up with what we decided to research. Also with trying to make what we decided to change, how will it impact the present. The most interesting fact that I investigated was that Bill Gates and another person helped create the basic coding of Microsoft. Also that big companies like Apple and Radioshack used it when it first came out for their products. The actions of individuals impact the historical record tremendously. What might be a small change in history can change the whole outlook of the future. For example what if Benjamin Franklin didn't have access to create a key or learning about the foundation of physics to launch the kite in the sky. How this project could be improved is probably putting more effort into my creativity side because I feel as though newspaper articles and a cartoon isn't as creative and showing my abilities as best as they can. If I had to do this project over what I would change about my process is how much time I spend using my resources. I know I should use all of my primary sources to my advantage but I didn't use them as effectively as I would like. Or maybe I did and I just doubt my self.

My point of divergence was a decision that Franklin Delano Roosevelt made. He knew that he was sick, so instead of focusing on ending the war as quickly as possible, he decided to work on the second bill of rights. He kept this secret so that the citizens of the united states would think he was doing the best for the nation by ending the war. As a result of this, 2012 has much less problems. Our economy is great, we are third in the world for education, and employment never dips under the rates it was at when the bill was passed. This is all because the second bill of rights helped the citizens of the united states with all of these issues.

    I liked being able to choose my own topic for a project. There was a lot of freedom, and I was able to look at something I was interested in. Even though I chose my own topic, there was still a lot of challenging work. Sometimes it was hard to find resources that I could use to know what would happen in the future if this point in time would change. It was also hard to find a topic that could be altered by history, and have some impact on the United States now. It took a lot of work, but I was eventually able to settle on a topic that I found interesting, and could effect American history a lot. The most interesting thing about my topic was the fact that it might have been possible. I had not heard about a plan for the second bill of rights before, and I really liked thinking about how the world would be different if it had been made.

    What if it had been made? The choice that FDR made to focus on the war, and not start creating the second bill of rights could have impacted our country greatly. It could have prolonged the war, but in the end made out country a lot better. The choice that he made effected our whole country. There are also millions of other choices that could have effected history, and we have no idea how much they would change the world had they been made differently. The choice that FDR made surely wasn't his own. It took him and some other people to decide what would be better for the country at that point, and they chose to focus un the war. There is no saying how much their decision, or any other has effected the world. Some decisions may hold no weight in the world, so that if they were changed nothing would be different, while others could look like not important decisions, but really change the world completely.

    My project could have been improved if the created primary sources were more interesting or creative. There could have been a video element to them, or something more exciting than a news article, and 2 dimensional things that can easily be printed out. I would also change my website a little to make it better looking, and possibly have more creative elements. If I could do this project over again, I would like to choose another point around the same time as the one I chose. This would help me see which one was more important to society, and why. If I chose the same topic, then I would make different primary sources as I mentioned above, and change my website or have a different form of presentation, like a magazine.

My point of divergence occurs in the year 1865 when William H. Seward dies because of complications of the attempted assassination. As a result of this event, William Seward never purchases Alaska, and thus the British Empire takes Alaska by force from Russia. After the British Empire discovers all of the benefits from Alaska, it aids them in future wars, and saves the United States on more then one occasion.

The process of this project was probably the most challenging. Being able to find points in history that can be changed and work was difficult and finding primary sources was even more difficult. However, even with all the difficulties involved with this project, it was rather fun being able to create your own future based on the turning of events. It also enabled me to discover some interesting things from the past. I had to look into World War 2 a lot considering the changes that were made because the British Empire controlled Alaska.

Over the course of doing this project I learned that one person really can make a big difference to the world. In the short term it may not be that big, however in the long term it can create massive changes. For instance because Seward ended up dying, the U.S. never found it in their interest to get Alaska from Russia. Now the United States is out of lots of oil and lots of money. The same thing goes for actions that are made. When certain actions are made by a group or a person, it can change the way things are short term, and massively change them in the long term. It takes a snow ball effect as time passes.

Due to the strictness of this project it is hard to say how this can be improved. It has to be very precise and accurate. Therefore, there is nothing to really improve on as a project. This did make it hard, but hard work makes good results. Unless you are in my case when you spend an entire week trying to find primary source docs and are unsuccessful. This is something that I think I can improve on. If I were to do the project again I would make sure to move on after being unsuccessful for so long.

Point of Divergence- THe point of divergence that was presented in my benchmark involved the kidnapping plot of President Lincoln that Booth plotted amongst others. The future that was effected by my point of divergence was the result of President Lincoln's Reconstruction plan before his assassination. With this divergence happening many events were able to take place, such as the event of the civil war ending sooner then it should of due to abraham lincoln's response. What I liked about this project was that as a student I was able to research a topic in history that I wasn't familiar with and able to change the course of time within it. Something that I found challenging about this benchmark was finding certain primary sources to fit my type of divergence. The most interesting event that I learned was about the Civil War and learning that Abraham Lincoln was involved with it. The actions of individuals impact the historical record because a specific time in history could of changed its course. If I were to produce a better project, I would take the time to look for a more specific point of divergence instead of the one I picked because I would feel more confident with other primary sources. Overall I am happy with the process of my 4th Quater benchmark.

My point of history in which I tampered with was President Harry Truman's decision to drop the atomic bombs on Japan to retaliate against the bombing in Pearl Harbor. The main point I focused on was what would happen if we became allies with the Soviet Union due to our common enemy, Japan. Truman could fear a nuclear war the way we do nowadays and is trying to keep the remaining sanity of the world. The world is on edge and if we just drop an atomic bomb in hopes of ending a war quickly, we may lose trust from every other country. We cannot barge into Japan and fight either because Japan targeted the Navy in Pearl Harbor. So the best thing to do was to set aside our opinions of the Soviet Union and fought along them to bring down Japan.

The States of 2012 would change drastically. Becoming allies with the Soviet Union could cause us to see the world through the eyes of Russia and China. The country would be somewhat of a communist country. But the laws supporting freedom would just cause us to have less liberation in the country. The censorship of the internet would already be in play, the music will be less vulgar (which wouldn't be such a terrible thing), and taxes would be equal so that the Occupy movements would be unnecessary. The protests against other wars wouldn't be as drastic because of our alliance with Russia and China.

I envisioned a big change in 2012 because if we're not as worried about arguing with the Russians, we wouldn't be worried about the dangers of an atomic bomb. However, if we have a strong bond with Russia and China, the world itself would be a monopoly. Russia and China have similar views on politics. If three of the more powerful countries are all agreeing on something, then nothing could stop them from controlling the entire world.

The enjoyable thing about creating an alternative future is that everyone wishes they could change an event in their lives. But when we are to search a historical event and alter that, we learn more and more about the event in the process. Rather than reading about a certain topic in the world and writing a paper, we had to go in depth about a specific events in order to understand how we can make a change. Sometimes having the knowledge on a specific matter doesn't mean you are an expert. You're an expert when you can make a difference that is plausible to a time you weren't present. Also, creating such a bond and a change between America and Russia over a common enemy seemed intangible, but it made sense. If two strong countries worked against one country who's main motive was to conquer, they could overcome any problem.

President Harry Truman was the man of the divergence. If the president really planned out the events following Japan's atomic bombing and realized that Japan's citizens shouldn't have to suffer for their leaders' actions, then he would have waited. Sure the war would have dragged out for 10 months or more rather than 10 days, but it may make an impact. America may not be the free and liberal place is it now, but it would be more strict than it is. Our educational and economic situation may not be present in the alternative history. The changes of the government by the government would cause a more miserable America, however it'll be a more stable America.

The best way to improve my point of divergence is to create a more in-depth explanation of Truman's chat with the Soviet Union. If we created an alliance, how did it happen? What happened in the room? But like other governmental events, most are top secret. So to personally understand President Truman and to understand the Soviet Union's government better, it would've created a better project. To understand this event alone, you must understand everything. If I had a chance to change my process, I wouldn't spend so much time researching President Harry Truman's other decisions, but I would have tried to understand the Soviet's government and Truman's decisions with other issues.

"What If?" History Benchmark

For my final history benchmark, we took a very interesting approach to history. This quarter, we were sopposed to pick a moment in history, and change it. After we changed that one moment, we were supposed to predict three things in history that would happen because of the change, and as a result, what would life be like today?

I decided to change the second day of The Battle of Gettysburg, when General Robert E. Lee doesn't allow General James Longstreet to attack the Union Army from behind. History according to Stephen Holts says that Lee allowed Longstreet to attack the Union line from behind, while the rest of the army attacks from the front. The Confederate Army wins the day, and because the battle was so bloody, President Abraham Lincoln decides to let the Confederacy live the way they want by completely separating them from the United States. From the Battle of Gettysburg came the establishment of the Confederate States of America.

Years later, the two countries are anything but friendly neighbors. They wage war all throughout history, with the bloodiest battles being right after the Civil War over the land in the west.

Coming closer the the 21st Century, the two countries are still fighting over the same thing their ancestors did. The CSA maintains a process of immigration that the USA views as modern day slavery, while the CSA defends it saying that immigrants work for their place in the country.

The CSA and USA fight over many different things, but they also come together in certain situations.

My point of divergence is about the killing of George Washington during the battle of Princeton, and the thought of us losing the revolution, and the reminiscing on how that would have conflicted with the future of us as a country.

The future that I envisioned, was that most of the land in the Midwest would most likely be all Britain’s including the thirteen colonies, and Mexico would have taken over Texas because there was no Mexican American war, and the Midwest would have been shared between England, Mexico, and Great Britain, which is located in the UK. I also said that because of Great Britain’s harsh laws on freedom of speech when it came to the civil rights movement the rulers of Britain will terminate the proceedings. I also mentioned the Native Americans and how they will just become a part of Britain’s society.

Overall, I thought this project was a very good learning experience, but overall I think the most difficult part was creating your own history and your own future of something you made up in your mind because there were so many events that occurred in history that could have been an extent to what could have happened but finding them deep within the context was very difficult.

If I had to do this project all over again I would have made an outline on how I was going to go about doing this project, because as I was attempting it, I got lost within my thoughts and I felt as though I had everything all over the place, and while into my project I would most often lose sight of my topic and get drawn into websites that had eight different stories and reasoning’s on events.

Aztec's Second Chance

So the point of my project was to change the fat of the Aztecs, a once indescribably powerful and advanced native american group of people. To do this, I decided to take out the man who made their downfall, Hernando Cortes. Growing up with a passion for adventure and danger, Cortes came across many different opportunities for him to die but escaped them by some luck or little trick. My POD is him running out trick and luck though.

There's a moment in Cortes' life where his life is put in the hands of a Governor name Velasquez who had to the power to completely kill him off without any repercussions. Two options could have been made and both were reasonable. One option was to kill off Cortes and make his death an example to anyone who would try to threaten Velassquez's position and power. The other, which is the option that was chosen in real history, was to let Cortes sit in jail which didn't work out very well because Cortes ends up picking his cuffs and escaping off to a church for refuge.

The result's of Cortes being killed off so early is that the exploration to and discovery of the Aztecs went different and in the Aztec's favor. The explorers who tried to do what Cortes would have done would fail due to their lack of a good blend wit, charm, and the ability to not understand fear and failure.

I think the thing that I liked the most about this project was the fact that I got to look into something that happened over a hundred years ago and be able to see how one change down the line can have a big ripple effect. I also liked the fact that I got to look into a group of people that really interested more. I think the most challeging thing about this project was trying to figure out what exactly would be the perfect point of divergence and then researching all the information that tied into the one change. There was a lot more background story to a lot more events that I needed to research but hadn't realized.

The most interesting thing that I read was the fact that Montezuma, the king of the Aztecs had all the warning signs that someone (Cortes) was coming to overthrow his power. There were numerous bad omens that foretold of it and Montezuma chose to ignore it. If he had planned ahead of time and actually took the omens seriously, he would have been more prepared to deal with the Spaniards.

As I learned from my project, one single choice made can reshape the entire outline and road that life is trying to steer. I feel like if I hadn't had other benchmarks and outside of school things to attend to, I would have been able to give this project the attention it deserved. I think I could have more thoroughly researched a lot of things, especial the Mexican American War that lead to the US gaining New Mexico, Texas, and California. If I were to ever do this project again, i would definitely put more effort into doing it and I would also try to make much, much better primary sources.

My point of divergence was having Hitler dying from injuries he sustained in WW1 instead of losing a testicle like he actually did. The way I went about made the world change and excluded many of the really important events of the 1930-1940s. With Hitler gone, the Nazi Party never gains much power but instead the former central power countries (Germany, Bulgaria, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey) decide since they've lost so much as a result of the Treaty of Versailles, they should form a new empire with what they have. In doing this, the new empire is able to combine their remaining militaries and begin to take back the countries created from that said treaty. Eventually they conquer all of Europe and then the US. They were able to do this because the U.S. was in a state of turmoil because The Great Depression. Concerning America, any form of independence is lost once again, and America falls under another country's rule, much like the 1700's. A european influence is much more profound in present-day America.

I really did enjoy this project but at the same it was very stressful for me at certain points. Finding and creating the sources was fairly easy but putting them all together into a coherent project was really difficult. I felt like I was always leaving out a portion of history that seem vital to my project. Although on the other hand, I got to explore the causes of WW1, something I didn't really know. I learned that the catalyst for WW1 was assassination of the prince of the Austria-Hungary Empire: Archduke Franz Ferdinand by a Serbian Slavic Nationalist Gavrilo Princip. His death caused the empire of Austria-Hungary to declared was on Serbia, sparking WW1. It certainly shows that an individual's actions can effect history greatly. He didn't suspect Austria-Hungary to start an all out war, he simply doing what he felt his people needed. With the central powers combined they had no problems taking out defenseless countries.

I feel like this project could be really interesting if the scope of what 2011 would be like was a lot more global. I feel like if we didn't have to connect it back to America we can show how the entire world has been affected as well. If I were given the chance to re-do this project, I definitely would make my final product a lot more visual and interactive. I'd try to immerse the person looking at it into the history was created.
