Ashley Spells Capstone

Posted by Ashley Spells in Capstone - Thompson - Wed on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 11:52 am
Abstract:

Fashion has always been a big part of my life. It's something that I enjoy watching, modeling and now designing. For my capstone I collaborated with Naihema Powell ,Sophie DeOliveira & Jamira Carter. Together we put on an amazing show(link below). At the show I showcased the designs that I made throughout the school year with my outside mentor Butter. This was the first year that I actually made clothing. Usually I would model the clothing of someone else but this year I wanted to try something different. Last year in my ILP I worked with Ms. Emily and she was a seamstress and she's really the one that motivated me to do this. Before having this ILP I only could sew things that needed to be repaired, After this learning experience I learned how to make a lot of different things. Ms. Emily pushed me to do better and to keep learning. Starting out I wasn't good at all, I hated what I made. After months and months of practice and staying motivated I was able to create these beautiful pieces. There were many bumps in the road. I had to fundraise a lot in order to make everything happen. The fabric that I used for my designs were not cheap. They were quality fabric. I wanted my models to love and feel good in what they were wearing. Fundraising was a major part of my success within my capstone. I raised a lot of money in order to make my senior project a success and it really paid off. I really did an amazing job and i'm really proud of myself and everyone who helped in the process of completing my capstone.

Analysis:
My mom is really big on eating healthy foods before we have desert. She always said “ No ice cream until you eat those greens” I made this meal because  it’s a great food to eat when you're not trying to spend a lot of money and also want something quick to eat. If you're not a fan of eating greens (broccoli, string beans, spinach etc) then this meal is something that you will enjoy because it has some of your favorite foods. This meal contains chicken to enrich the meal. Most healthy choices are nasty and this is why people don’t chose to eat them. Since this meals contains chicken .. grilled chicken it is healthy and tasty. There is not a lot of grease of the chicken because all the grease comes off when you grill it. There is not a lot of fatty foods in this meal, which is also a good things because it does not contain a lot of calories. This meal is not expensive it only cost me about $10. Usually with healthy foods you pay a lot of money but with this meal its not a lot of money and it doesn’t take a lot of time to cook. This is definitely a good choice if you wanna eat both healthy and tasty.

Reflection
I personally enjoyed this project. I liked the idea of us teaching the class about eating healthier and also teaching them different foods they can make to choose healthier options. I know that we as teens don’t always eat healthy. The reasons being because of the cost and also because healthier options are not really good versus non healthy options. I liked that this project was designed for us to create healthy foods at a reasonable price. This was good because this is helping  with the problems of unhealthy options within the teen community. It was good to see what everyone made and how it tasted. Normally healthy options are not really good and it amazed me how everyone managed to create something healthy and tasty ! Also healthy foods are normally expensive so it’s cool to get options that are cheap and that we can afford. Great project.

How To Prevent Yourself From Falling On SEPTA !

Posted by Ashley Spells in Physics - Echols - C on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at 4:39 pm
Introduction
In this project, our group had to design a way to show how physics works on SEPTA. We had to choose a particular audience and 3 specific scenarios in which those people were affected by physics but did not have prior knowledge of how to react in those situations, so that the outcome would be positive. We decided to choose elderly people with canes that don’t have any tips (for extremely reduced friction) as our audience. By doing this, we could show how the canes will not serve much use if a person falls compared to grabbing a pole or knowing in advance where to stand/lean/sit prior to a possible turn or stop. We also wanted to show the correct way to stand/lean/sit on SEPTA to ensure that you don’t go flying and smashing your hand into someone’s face. Because no one likes to see an elderly man or woman falling and embarrassing themselves and or the people around them, we created this helpful guide that includes explanations for why these events happen and the forces that occur within them, comparisons between what you may have initially thought versus what is really going on (it’s deceiving, we know) and demonstrations for these scenarios so that you don’t keep remembering that time when you crashed into that lady, spilling her groceries because you were texting and didn’t see the turn coming.
Created by : Ashley S ,Alex H,Jeremiah C. and Katie N. .. ENJOY !

Ashley Spells Book Review: The Dirty Divorce

Ashley Spells Presents: A Scene From The Dirty Divorce from Enthony Chhin on Vimeo.

The Dirty Divorce
By: Ashley Spells

The dirty divorce is such an amazing book! It takes place in Washington D.C.From the time you start till the end you are on the edge of your seat. You are always wondering what is going to happen next. This is the type of book where you don't want to sit it down you have to keep reading.Miss K.P. did a awesome job keeping the readers attention and not making the book boring. The book is full of drama and it makes you think and it makes you feel as if you were there. I myself am not a fan of reading books a lot but this book was different I really could not sit this book down thats how good it was.Love, trust, lies, deceit, money, family and sex are the common themes in the book. Pregnancy, rape and abduction hit the family all at one time.
The main characters of the book are Lisa and Rich. Lisa and Rich are married and have two children together,Juan who is the oldest and Denie who is the baby girl. Lisa is a stay at home wife and mom.Lisa gets any and everything she wants and loves to go shopping! I first realized that I was going to love this book when I made a connection with Lisa’s character.Lisa loves to go shopping she is very chill and loves to have fun. When I first were reading about Lisa I pictured myself being with her because we like doing similar things. Rich and Lisa are complete opposites, I guess its true that opposites attract.Rich is a sexy drug pin and he runs the city of D.C! Rich is a gangster and is well respected In D.C. Denie which is Lisa’s and Rich’s daughter is a daddy’s girl she and Rich have a great relationship  but Denie never had a good relationship with her mother Lisa. Denie is a spoiled brat she gets everything she wants.Juan on the other hand is a mommy’s boy he would do anything and everything for Lisa,Juan hates Rich with a passion. Lisa and Rich live the fab life in the suburbs of D.C. They have the nice cars,Big house etc.Rich is top drug dealer in D.C. he is very attractive and girls love him.
Lisa grew up in the church. She went to church every day of the week well until she met Rich. He was the bad guy,she was the good girl it was love at first sight. Lisa fell in love with Rich only because he was the bad guy that’s what she loved most about him.She loved that we was into the game because she grew up in the church she never experienced a “bad boy” Only Lisa didn’t know what she was getting herself into. Lisa is the type of chick that was be like “What am I going to do without him” She was so use to having everything handed to her that she forgot all about being independent. I really hated that Lisa depended on a man.
Rich has the money and the look and girls would just throw themselves at him. Rich always cheats on Lisa with other women. Lisa is so naive about the situation! Lisa really got on my nerves when it came to Rich and his infidelities. She knows Rich cheats on her but Lisa loves him so much and have been with him for so long that she could never see herself ever leaving Rich for good. When she tries to walk away when she has had enough he would always shower her with gifts to make her stay.Rich knew exactly what to do to make Lisa not mad at him anymore.Lisa is so blinded by Rich’s infidelities that she always comes back to Rich.We all have that boy who we love and can never give up.We know that he is doing wrong and that we shouldn't be with him but we stay because of our love for that person.Even when we do leave that person alone we know at the end of the day we will always be there well that’s how Lisa feel about Rich but how much can a person take before they are done forever? I understood that Lisa didn’t wanna leave Rich alone because she really cares for him and love him but Lisa really made me so mad when she started to make up excuses for not leaving. She would always use her kids as an excuse to stay with Rich.
I think a lot of young girls  would love to read this book and can relate to this book. I believe that anyone who does read this book would love it because it touches on things that are going on in the real world and also because its a suspenseful book, keeps you interested and also on your edge of your seat. Overall this is my book review on The Dirty Divorce by Miss K.P.

As history and English class come to an end I start to reflect on the common themes that we have focused on this school year. Colonization, power,nonviolence/violence and the use and misuse of sweat shop are just to name a few that we have focused on.

We all know that the united states is the number one richest country in the world, but as a whole we are struggling ourselves and we always go for “what’s the cheapest”. In Mr block’s English class we were first introduced to a text called “Are your hands clean?” I thought it was a trick question but then I began to think about the not so obvious answers. When Thinking about this question I first thought of sweatshops and how my clothes and shoes are all made in foreign countries. Workers get treated very poorly and they don’t get paid a lot for making the clothes. They are in the factories for 23 hours a day just to earn a little bit of money to feed there family. In the video Zoned for a slavery ,the man informed us that the workers earn 12 cents for every shirt they produce, but in the stores in the US we may pay 20 dollars for a shirt but the workers only get paid 12 cents for the shirt so where is the other $19.88 going?  We will never know. When coming to conclusion I knew that my hands were not clean.

In history class we were assigned to do a trail about Modern Day Sweatshops In the trial our roles were either a US consumer, poor country ruling elites, the workers, system of profit and US multinational corporations. My role was to be a US consumer. It wasn’t easy to defend the consumers because we consumers do take part in sweatshops. We buy clothing that are made in sweatshops because it’s cheaper. Stores like American Apparel clothing are made in the US and we could easily buy clothes from them but we chose not to because they are "Too expensive". “Why pay more when you can pay less” says my friend Warda. We girls love forever 21 but they use sweatshops weather we know or not they do.In the video “Made in L.A” We learned a lot about the whole Forever 21 operation and how everything works/ Workers were sick and tired of how they were being treated so they decided to hurt the owners Non-violently by going on a strike and protesting for what they believe in, and it worked. The owners finally gave into what the workers wanted and they didn't use violence to handle there problem instead they hurt them by just protesting.

Speaking of non-violence. Non-violence and violence played a huge role in the themes we learned this school year.In History class,Mr. Block had us write a journal which was about power as well as violence. I thought that “Being non-violent was more powerful than being violent, it takes more work to be non-violent, being violent doesn't make you powerful it makes you look crazy”. After doing the journal we watched a movie about a man who stood his ground and got his way by doing things non-violently. His name was Gandhi. In the movie Gandhi and his followers were treated very badly but through it all they didn’t use violence to show that they had power. Just them being silent and taking all the abuse showed how powerful they really were.

We didn’t just focus on non-violence we also talked about violence as well. In the beginning of the school year we read a novel called “Lord Of The Flies” .In the book teens were stranded on an island and they were faced with many problems being on that island unsupervised. In the novel the kids kill each other to survive on the island. Being in power caused them to act that way causing them to handle situation more violently... They didn't care if you were they're best friend if you got in there way they would kill you. This was the first violent act that we learned about. Later,we started to talk about colonization and how it affected people as well as the country as a whole. We had to pick a country that we wanted to focus on and then create a museum about the country and how they benefited or didn’t benefit from colonization. I focused on Sierra Leone. My project was called Diamonds Of Sierra Leone. In Sierra Leone They use a lot of violence to get there point across. For example soldiers known as the RUF recruit children from different villages in Africa and force them to become a soldier. If they reject they will be shot right on the spot. If they accept they go from village to village shooting other innocent people and forcing them to do as they say.

Overall the common themes that we learned in Mr. Block’s class helped me have a open mind on things and they really helped me out. We learned lots of more themes but these are my general understandings that I wanted to focus on.

question: What is more powerful violence or non-violence?

answer: I think non-violence is more powerful. I believe this because I don't believe that if a person is violent then they are powerful that just means you are making yourself look stupid and crazy not powerful. Ig you are non-violent your mature and powerful because you don't let things get to you and you been through a lot but yet your still standing strong.

Question --> Is it hard to forgive if your people suffer horrors at the hands of others?

Answer: I still believe it is possible to forgive if your people suffer horrors at the hands of others because it's just the right thing to do. You can't keep holding a grudge against someone that happened 50 years ago i mean thats not healthy. Of course it's going to be hard but you have to forgive to move forward you can't move forward with a grudge on your shoulder. Forgive but of course you will never forget.

Language is key !

Posted by Ashley Spells in English 2 - Block on Monday, January 14, 2013 at 8:33 pm
In this unit we were talking about Language and what it mean to you , and how language is a struggle we all had problems with. The unit started out with a video in which it showed how many people talk and who they thought had the worst accent when they speak, of course no one said themselves. We were then assigned a project called "Language Autobiography". For this project we had to write about how language affected us and how we made it through. For instance in my language biography I told my story when i was in seconded grade and how my peers teased me for the way I talked. We also had to make a video. From doing this project I learned how the way you speak determines how people treat you.

Language is key

Being a kid was rough for me. I never knew the way I talked could be so humorous. It all started in 2nd grade, Ms. Brown’s class. It was the 1st day of school, the first day of being a second grader, I was excited. The sun was shining bright and blazing merrily, the sky was blue, and the wind was whistling a light tune. I was too fresh I had on my cripst new white uniform shirt with the three flower buttons at the top,my navy blue french toast dress, my sockings and my navy shoe shoes from payless. I spent the whole summer in Atlanta with my aunt. As I was getting out of my aunt’s shining bright like a diamond black maxima she said “See ya lata, honey bumkins” the kids laughed.“Bye auntie” they laughed again. I never caught on to why they were laughing about until I got to class and I began to speak once more.

As I walked into room 204, Ms. Brown’s 2nd grade class, I sat next to Brianna , who I thought was one of my close friends. I knew her since kindergarten.
“Hello class,  welcome back! How was your summer? Anybody want to share your  exciting stories you may have with the class?” Ms. Brown said. Brianna raised her hand “Over the summer I went to disney world” I raised my hand next.” Go head , state your name and what you did over the summer” Ms Brown said. “ Hey,my name is Ashley and over da summa I went to Atlanta Georgia with my auntie Tisha” The whole class started laughing , even Brianna. I guess being in Atlanta with my aunt for 3 months really had an impact on me! I started to talk like how them southern people talked. I didn’t hear it at first, but i knew something was up when every time I spoke my classmates would laugh. I didn’t catch the joke. Did I have food in my teeth? Did I not smell good? Did someone stick something on my back, that was suppose to be funny? All those thoughts rushed to my head.I couldn’t and didn’t understand why the hell I was so funny.

It was only 10:00 and already I didn’t want to be there anymore. I stopped raising my hand. I was ashamed, I was embarrassed I was the laughing stock of the class.People who I thought were my friends were laughing at me. That didn’t make me seem good. I didn’t wanna go back to ms. Brown’s class again,I wanted to go home and go to sleep and pretend nothing ever happened. The day went on and I was still in school. It was lunch time now. “Why do you talk so weird now Ashley?” said Nashae. “Weird, what are you talkin bout’ girl?” “You’re talking weird that’s not how you talked last year.” she started to laugh. “What’s so funny, I’m finna punch you in the face!” “See!” said Nashae “Like that what does finna mean? do you mean you’re going to?” Right then and there I noticed I was talking differently! When Nashae finally broke it down, thats when I realized I was talking like my aunt!
Rather than playing in the schoolyard with the other kids I sat by myself on the wall. On the wall I was thinking about everything that happened today , I thought of ways I could change how I talked back so I wouldn’t have to get laughed at anymore. I just wanted to fit in. Isn’t that what every child wants to do? Nobody wants to be left out or an outsider because of the way they dress or from the way they talked. Then some girl named mya came over. “what are you doing over here by yourself” “finna change my talk” “finna?” mya said. “ I mean “I’m going to” change my way of speaking” “ooooohhh, need help?” Mya helped me all lunch period with my speaking. “Now, we don’t use the word “finna” thats so weird just say i’m going to. I heard you say in class the word “da” and “summa” da is not a word just say the and summer say it with me ssuuummmeeerr. there you go you got it!” we worked on my speech for the whole lunch period. From that day one Mya was my best friend and we still remain close till today. Back to the story the bell had just rung and it was time to go in and get back to class.

When we got back to class Jennifer, who I haven’t liked since 1st grade tried to imitate me and tried to hurt me more because she thought the class was finna laugh oops I mean going to laugh. “Ms. Brown i’m finna use the bathroom” she got no laughs before Ms.Brown could say anything I laughed I didn’t let it hurt me one bit. “Jennifer you mean you’re going to use the bathroom” She was salty, embarrassed, surprised and annoyed. The class was amazed, I did a whole 360 before school was even over. I was determined to not be the laughing stock of the class. The school bell rang the day was over. I couldn’t wait to see my mom to tell her all about my day and how crazy it was. Till this day I still reminisce on this topic with Mya we always laugh and joke about it. I’m glad now I can sit back and laugh.

The Keystone Pipeline Monologue Project

Posted by Ashley Spells in World History - Block on Monday, October 15, 2012 at 7:22 pm
intro :
For this project we first watched a video that people  made to inform us what this Keystone pipeline project was. After we watched the videos we had a feeling of what it was all about so we got more information about it by looking it up. My first  monologue was about a young lady named Betty who lives in Oklahoma and is forced to work onto the Keystone Pipeline because she is jobless and needs to pay her bills. The Keystone pipeline puts people in different positons. For instance Betty does not support the Keystone idea because it raise global warming ,but someone like Mitt Romney wants to build it because it can increase jobs. With this topic you really have mixed emotions because you want people to get jobs but we will have to suffer in the end.

facts:
- can create more jobs :)
-can increase global warming :(
- when global warming increases animals such as penguins are in danger. :(
-  increase in pollution :(
- the oil can spill :(
- Romney supports the keystone pipeline

Descriptive Essay: My Black Is Beautiful

Posted by Ashley Spells in English 2 - Block on Friday, September 28, 2012 at 9:22 am

“My black is beautiful” Now that I’m 15 i know that now. You think I got it easy I don't ,if you was there in second grade when they could tease me you would know exactly how I felt. This is my story.
It was 7:00 am , my mom came in my room and woke me up for the first day of school. “ Ashley , its 7 o’ clock get up its time for school!” she said. I woke up about five mins. Later walked slowly like a zombie to the bathroom. I was so sleepy ! 7 o’ clock came fast! I turned on the shower and let the water run. I grabbed my pink rag from the rack and the pink dove soap from the soap dish and hoped in the shower. After i got finshed washing up , I went to my room and started to get dress. It was the first day of second grade i was so hype and excited and of course i wanted to look nice. My mom brought my freshly ironed navy blue pants with the cress in them ,my fresh white 2 button short sleeve uniform shirt my navy blue sweater , my white uniform socks and my playless black mary janes to me. As I was getting dress I smelled this lovely aroma , it smell so good , it was my breakfast, it was about 7:45am  I went down stairs to the kitchen to eat breakfast. My mom made me some waffles. As I finshed at breakfast i grabed my bratz bookbag and walked to school with my mom. It was 8:15 and I was standing in line with the other kids , waiting for our teacher to come out.
When we finally got in the class , we had assigned seats I had to sit with Marvin KC , Aarin and Miah they made my life I living hell. Who knew that 4 little second graders where this much trouble. When I first sat down Aarin whispered and said “Why is she so black” , I guess she thought I didnt hear it. I didnt pay it no mind at first but than more mean stuff keep coming , not just from the girls but from the boys too. KC said “Ashley is black as the street” everyone laughed. At  first I was chillen , didnt pay it no mind but when mean things are keep coming at you what do you do? I thought to my self why am i so dark , why do i have a gap in my teeth , why am I so little , why am I so skinny everything negative  rushed to my head. I didn't understand why God made me this way. I always asked myself why did God create me , did he create me to be the laughing stock of the whole class.I didnt love myself for who I really was. i wanted to be light skin because majority of my class mates was , not saying i’m a follower but I justed wanted the attacks to stop! I told my mom , what they said about me she said “ Baby , dont worry you are beautiful”. I didn't feel like it though. I felt hurt , I was confused. I use to get teased everyday , but now I know who I am. I know why god put me on this earth.  I’m me ! Nobody can take it anyway from me. I live in the centry where being dark is not ugly but its beautiful! I dont have to feel like i dont belong. I feel comfortable in my own skin. Im fine how i am. So what if I’m darkskin , I rather have color than none at all! I learned alot from what Miah , Marvin ,KC and Aarin told me , back than it hurted but know I can just sit back and laugh , because I know my black is
beautiful!!

Negative Space Reflection.

Posted by Ashley Spells in Art - 9 - Hull on Monday, April 23, 2012 at 12:15 pm
A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

- negative space is spaces between , or around an object.

B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?

-The way i found negative space is listening to what ms. hull said. she said that we have to use everything and it had to be those to colors.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

-it helps an artist to see whats there. which parts are important and what you should really focus on.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not

- i think it does enhance drawing because it makes the picture look more interesting.

my slide was not that bad. my class mates told me too change the letters in the word dance. they told me to match the word "dance" to the color of the dress and shoes. what i also had to change was the size of both of the pictures. for my after picture i made both pictures equal.

my slide

Posted by Ashley Spells in Technology - Hull on Friday, December 2, 2011 at 9:46 am
http://zachholman.com/posts/slide-design-for-developers/

i used the website above to help me with my slide. i used the rules from the page to make my slide better. i didnt crowd my slide , i added a all black background ,  & 2 imporant pictures that describe what i'm talking about.
when i was 5 i did dance and one of my classes were balett. i chose a black background to make my pictures POP out more and stand out. i chose the shoes and a dancer because i felt as though it was imporant for the reader to see what am about and the things i like to do. below is a sneak peak of my slide !
