MORGAN TAYLOR'S CAPSTONE

NAME: Morgan Taylor

MENTOR: Ms. Dunda, as she has experience with being a mentor for blood drives in earlier years.

ABSTRACT:
For my capstone, I decided to host a blood drive. I wanted to do something that had to do with the medical field, but I was not so sure what exactly I was going to do until Ms. Dunda came up to me and asked me to host the blood drive. I didn't want to just host a blood drive, I wanted to leave something behind that would be helpful in some way. I did a lot of research and found that the Red Cross has a blue tag program. This blue tag program collects blood specifically for people with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). I wanted to learn more than just what it was like to plan an event, this was my chance. I researched the disease and made a brochure on it, this brochure has some information on the blue tag program as well. So, if the next student hosting the blood drive has trouble explaining the blue tag program, they can hand out this brochure.  In the process, I ran into a few issues. These mostly revolved around getting student to want to sign up and for students to actually show up to appointment times that were made. Another snag was a miscommunication of times with the Red Cross. I wanted the last appointment to be at 2:00, but they thought that I meant for everything to be packed up and gone by 2:00. So I lost a couple of appointments that way, it was mostly a problem for the last blood drive. I was, however, able to overcome these difficulties. I am so unbelievable grateful to have had them because they helped me to test my problem-solving skills. I worked diligently throughout this year planning, hosting and researching. Overall I am satisfied with my result.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY:

When I first reviewed this source I thought it was very reliable, mainly because it was the Red Cross website. I am sure that the Red Cross has a lot of interesting statistics about giving blood and facts on it as well. This tab on the Red Cross website explains the things that I need to put into my brochure. As well as it tells me things that I can tell other people to make them want to donate at my blood drive.

  • Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.

  • More than 41,000 blood donations are needed every day.

  • A total of 30 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S.

  • The average red blood cell transfusion is approximately 3 pints.

When I first reviewed this source I thought it was very reliable, mainly because it was the Red Cross website. The Red Cross started the blue tag program, that is how I heard of the blue tag program. This tab on the Red Cross website explains what the program does, how it originated and how it helps people. This website will be helpful by informing me on how the blue tag program helps people/kids with the sickle cell disease. This website will also help me explain the blue tag program in my brochure.

  • The American Red Cross and Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago developed and created a Cooperative Sickle Cell Donor Program dedicated to meeting the transfusion needs of sickle cell patients.

  • Sickle cell disease affects approximately 70,000 African Americans.

  • Some children with sickle cell disease need blood transfusions through the course of a year.

  • The best blood for an African-American child usually comes from an African-American donor.

When I first reviewed this source I thought it was very reliable. The rule of thumb for me is if it ends in .gov or .edu it is a reliable source. This website will be helpful by informing me on what the sickle cell disease is. I know that I already have a reliable source for explaining what sickle cell is, but I just want to make sure that all of the information I found on the other website checks out. This website is from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, therefore it should give me a lot of reliable information.

  • Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders. In SCD, the red blood cells become hard and sticky and look like a C-shaped farm tool called a "sickle."

  • People with SCD can live full lives and enjoy most of the activities that other people do. If you have SCD, it's important to learn how to stay as healthy as possible.

When I first reviewed this source I thought it was very reliable, mainly because it was the Red Cross website. This tab on the Red Cross website gives a timeline on the history of blood transfusion. It will tell me when the first blood transfusion took place. This website will be helpful by informing me on how giving blood started and why it is important. This website will also help me explain how blood drives started and why they are important in my brochure.

  • British physician William Harvey discovers the circulation of blood. The first known blood transfusion is attempted soon afterward.- 1628

  • U.S. physicians attempt transfusing milk from cows, goats and humans.- 1873-1880

  • The U.S. government establishes a national blood collection program.- 1940

When I first reviewed this source I thought it was very reliable, mainly because it was the Red Cross website. This was a very important piece to help me host the blood drive. This tab on the Red Cross website explains the things that I need to do to have a successful blood drive. It also has a place to sign people up for the blood drive. This site helped me prepare for my first blood drive.

The Blood Drive Host

  • Offers a suitable location

  • Helps recruit donors within the organization and publicizes the drive

  • Schedules donors for their appointments

The Red Cross Does the Rest

  • Works with you every step of the way to plan and organize the blood drive

  • Helps you determine how many donors to expect and how to recruit them

  • Brings equipment and supplies to you, sets everything up and takes it down at the end

  • Confidentially screens donors and collects the donations, safely and professionally

One of the things that I have to do for my capstone is plan two blood drives. To do that I researched how to successfully plan an event. This website will help me take the steps necessary to make my blood drives great. This website is reliable because it is from Cornell University’s Office of the Dean of Students. Therefore this website will help me a lot.

  • Step 1—Assess resources

    • Know what you have to work with before planning. Faculty and staff members, students, and community groups are all resources.

  • Step 2—Assess needs and interests

    • Who will attend? What are their interests? What are your goals? What needs are you trying to meet?

  • Step 3—Brainstorm ideas

    • Think of every type of event that might fulfill the goals. Don’t evaluate ideas at this point, just list all suggestions. Once this is done, review each idea and assess it for feasibility.

  • Step 4—Develop a time line

    • Make a list of everything that needs to be done to plan the event. Sometimes it’s easier to work backward from the date of the event to the present. Make a schedule that shows when each task needs to be completed.

  • Step 5—Reserve space

    • Over 600 organizations plus university departments compete for limited campus space for events. Reserve your space as early as possible.

  • Step 6—Develop a budget

    • Most likely you have a set amount of money available to spend on the event, or ticket sales may need to cover all the costs. List all associated costs and allocate the available funds. You may have to contact various departments for cost estimates associated with their services, including Cornell Police and EHS.

  • Step 7—The paper chase

    • Complete all the necessary paperwork including department services, room reservations, the UUP form, and permits.

  • Step 8—The people chase

    • Contact all the persons necessary for a successful event; performers, speakers, volunteers, and campus departments. Cornell Police and Environmental Health and Safety may require staff members to be present at your event, and must have advance notice to schedule these individuals to work.

  • Step 9—Details

    • Complete and confirm all details pertaining to the event.

  • Step 10—The Event

    • HAVE FUN!!

  • Step 11—Evaluate

    • Write a brief synopsis of the event, including participant and planner comments, attendance, suggestions for future events, and final costs.

  • Step 12—Start planning the next event!

When I first reviewed this source I thought it was very unreliable. I say this because it is for kids. I was worried that while the website was trying to explain sickle cell disease more simply, they would forget some of the important difficult things. Then I realized that this might help me better understand sick cell. As well as it will help me explain it better.

  • More than 70,000 Americans have sickle cell anemia. And about 2 million Americans — including 1 in 12 African Americans — have sickle cell trait, which means they carry a single gene for the disease and can pass this gene along to their children, but do not have the disease itself.

  • Sickle cell anemia occurs when a person inherits two abnormal genes (one from each parent) that cause their RBCs to change shape. Instead of being flexible and disc-shaped, these cells are more stiff and curved in the shape of the old farm tool known as a sickle — that's where the disease gets its name. The shape is similar to a crescent moon.

  • Sickle cell anemia is an inherited blood disorder that mostly affects people of African ancestry, but also occurs in other ethnic groups, including people who are of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern descent.

When I first reviewed this source I thought it was very reliable, mainly because it was the Red Cross website. The Red Cross started the blue tag program, that is how I heard of the program. This tab on the Red Cross website explains the history of the Sickle Cell Donor Program.. This website will be helpful by informing me on how the blue tag program started. This website will also help me explain the blue tag program in my brochure.

  • The Penn-Jersey Blood Services Region’s Sickle Cell Donor Program was developed in 1997 in collaboration with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to meet the chronic transfusion needs of patients with Sickle Cell Disease.

  • A “blue tag: is placed on blood donation from self-identified African Americans and Black-identified blood donors.  This “blue tag” identifies the unit as one designated for the Sickle Cell Donor Program which prompts additional testing in order to match a Sickle Cell patient.

  • Hemoglobin is the complex molecule of your red blood cells that helps carry oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body.  It is also what gives blood its characteristic deep red color.  Most people have only the most common type of hemoglobin, called hemoglobin A, in their red blood cells.  Testing positive for hemoglobin S simply means that your red blood cells contain a different type of hemoglobin called sickle cell hemoglobin or hemoglobin S for short.

When I first reviewed this source I thought it was very reliable. The rule of thumb for me is if it ends in .gov or .edu it is a reliable source. This website will be helpful by informing me on what the sickle cell disease is. This website is basically a more formal way of introducing sickle cell disease. Although some of this might be hard to understand, it will help me make my brochure on the blue tag program even more professional.

  • Sickle cell anemia (uh-NEE-me-uh) is the most common form of sickle cell disease (SCD). SCD is a serious disorder in which the body makes sickle-shaped red blood cells. “Sickle-shaped” means that the red blood cells are shaped like a crescent.

  • Sickle cells contain abnormal hemoglobin called sickle hemoglobin or hemoglobin S. Sickle hemoglobin causes the cells to develop a sickle, or crescent, shape.

  • In sickle cell anemia, the abnormal sickle cells usually die after only about 10 to 20 days. The bone marrow can't make new red blood cells fast enough to replace the dying ones.

When I first reviewed this source I thought it was very reliable, mainly because it was the Red Cross website. This site explains to people why donating blood is important. This tab on the Red Cross website explains the things that I need to put into my brochure. As well as it tells me things that I can tell other people to make them want to donate at my blood drive.

  • You just need your own reason.

    • Some of us give blood because we were asked by a friend.

    • Some know that a family member or a friend might need blood some day.

    • Some believe it is the right thing we do.

  • Whatever your reason, the need is constant and your contribution is important for a healthy and reliable blood supply.  And  you’ll feel good knowing you've helped change a life.

Isabela Supovitz Capstone

Abstract Paragraph:

My dream has always been to be a published author. In order to achieve this goal, I decided that I needed to read and write consistently every single day. When thinking of a capstone, I wanted to choose a project that held a much deeper meaning for me. The idea came to me very naturally, I wanted to write my first novel.

My novel takes place in Mexico, and aims to be a beautiful and creative piece that references the struggles of growing up, life and death, and most importantly, the importance of cultural awareness. This book’s focus is the drug cartels, and what experiencing them is like. I decided that cultural awareness is a good focus for a novel, because I feel like most people my age are not conscious of what is going on outside of the U.S. In order to make this story come to life, I read and researched plenty about the cartels, as well as interviewed family members and used stories of friends who have had personal and terrifying experiences with the Mexican drug cartels. While my book is still a work in progress, I have written well over two hundred pages and am constantly editing and adding to my story every day.

Proof of Completion: I talked to Mrs. Echols because I do not feel comfortable sharing my novel in the works publicly online, as I one day hope to publish it. Instead I have made a presentation which I will attach the link to here, with two of the more composed excerpts from chapters one and four of my novel. Here is that link:

Bibliography:

1.

Hernandez, Anabel. Narcoland (The Mexican Drug lords and Their Godfathers). Mexico: 2010. 304. Print.

After a visit to Mexico in which I began to learn more about what the police and government are like, and how they really work as the backbone for the drug cartels I decided that I wanted to write a novel about the drug wars happening there. The first thing I did as a part of research for my book was to buy Narcoland by Anabel Hernandez because she is a well respected Mexican Journalist, and her book states all of the facts and very detailed explanations and recalling of events throughout drug cartel history. From this book I was able to pool a reliable variety of information that helped inspire events in my book, and helped my portray things more accurately. I appreciated the way she wrote the book, because she wrote it completely unopinionated, stating only the facts and citing her resources.

2.

Goldberg, Natalie. Writing Down the Bones. Boston: Shambhala, 1986. 171. Print.

Mr. Block my American Government teacher recommended I read this book in order to learn more about what it means to be a good writer. Although I have not finished reading this book, what I have read depicts simple but accurate techniques that help any writer continue to write. This book will continue to function as my main resource as far as how to write a book professionally. I think the main way it is helping me achieve my goal in writing a book is by giving me a constant wide variety of ways that I can improve my writing and create a book that appeals to everyone. I want to make sure my book is well written, so this resource is helping me do that.

3.

Fabrizio, Mejía Madrid. "Drugs and Mexican culture." BBC Radio World Service. (2008): n. page. Print. <http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/news/2008/11/081029_narcoculture.shtml>.

I have looked at many websites that depict what cartel life is like in Mexico, but I think BBC does a wonderful job at doing so accurately. The way that Mejia Madrid (the author of this article) talks about the cartels in many different perspectives is not only interesting, but accurate. People fail to realize how many different roles the cartels play in Mexican society, and how differently certain people in the country relate to and react to what they are doing. I want to portray all of these different perspectives in my novel because I think it’s very important for me to make it as accurate as possible.

4.

Daily Mail Reporter, . "Mexican 'hitman' called El Ponchis 'who killed seven people' ." Daily Mail. 04 DEC 2010: n. page. Web. 29 Jan. 2014. <http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1335510/14-year-old-Edgar-Jimenez-known-El-Ponchis-arrested-committing-murder-Mexican-drugs-cartel.html>.

This article is really important to my book because it is a good example of the shocking things that occur in Mexico because of the cartels. The 14 year old boy murderer whom this article is about is a character in my book. I use this story in my writing to show how shocking the things that happen in Mexico now are and just how close danger is to innocent people there. I also want to make a point to unveil the absolute hardest truths because I want people my age to read this and think “Wow. I can’t believe I didn’t know how bad things were there.” and “What could I do to stop this?”. These types of things hardly ever happen in America, and I think we shouldn’t be alright with it happening anywhere else.

5.  Calderon, Beatriz. Personal Interview. 15 Dec 2013.

My Grandmother from Mexico, Betty, had a close encounter with the dangers occurring in Mexico. This experience was not only absolutely terrifying, but it accurately represents the types of things that happen in Mexico now a days. I decided that this book, in order to stay true to me and my background, had to include real life events that had impacted me. I think this story that I interviewed my grandmother on adds grit to my story, and makes it all the more appealing to the reader.

6. Nabokov, Vladimir. Lolita. Paris: Olympia Press, 1955. Print.

A great majority of the research I have conducted for this project has been through reading great novels so that I have some frame of reference on how to properly write a novel. This book is not only a classic, but it is very controversial and sort of perverse, and I think my novel in it’s own way has similar characteristics, as it is dealing with the hundreds of thousand murders that have occurred because of the drug cartels. I want to learn how to present these issues in a way that people can understand.

7. Diaz, Junot. This is how you lose her. Riverhead, 2012. 224. Print.

I chose to read This is How you Lose Her by Junot Diaz as one of my research books because I figured that it was drastically different from Lolita, and I want to make sure my book incorporates modern ideas. One of the ways in which Junot Diaz helped me with my book is by creating an endearing sense of humor in the midst of chaos and heartbreak. I want to make sure that my readers feel everything in the way that Junot Diaz has made me really feel everything. I think the main reason why this book is great for my research is because it has taught me the importance of adding humor to good literature.

8. Walker, Alice. The Color Purple. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1982. Print.

The Color Purple is another drastically different text that I chose to read for my research, mainly because it is structured in a clever way that I have never seen before. When I read this book I saw issues that used to exist in slavery and sexism portrayed in a very unique way. You are thrown into the diary of a woman whom at first you don’t particularly like, but as she grows and the book gets better, you grow with the character. I think I want my main character Alma to have this kind of growth.

9. Kerouac, Jack. On The Road. Viking Press, 1957. Print.

On The Road is a classic piece of literature that takes the reader from one location to another. Towards the end of my book, Alma and Chello take a road trip from Cancun to Sinaloa, Mexico. In order to write this as accurately as possible, I used Jack Kerouac’s style of writing to teach me how to describe things vividly and at a fast pace.

10. Multiple, . "Mexico Drug War." La Times. 2 Dec 2013: n. page. Web. 4 Feb. 2014. <http://projects.latimes.com/mexico-drug-war/

LA Times has been doing projects online, one of which keeps up with what is happening with the Mexican drug cartels. I have been keeping up with this website regularly so as to see what is currently happening. I think in order to write this book as accurately as I can, I need to continue to stay updated on what is happening in Mexico. I will continue to use this site to find details for my novel.

Topic Summary:

For my senior project, I am creating the lyrics to the songs from my first album.

Project Abstract:

My entire Science Leadership Academy journey has prepared me for my senior project. Since I was a freshman here, I’ve had an idea of what I wanted my capstone to be. Then the following year, my sophomore year I thought I was 100% decided on my capstone. However at the end of my junior year of high school, I began to actually think about how different factors would affect the efficiency of my capstone. All summer I weighed the pro’s and con’s of starting my record label Touch Bass Records up again. I would have many more people that would be apart of it. We would learn together and perform together as well. Selfishly, I knew that I would’ve spent too much time working with a group of talented musicians. So I decided to focus on myself instead. So this year, I am preparing myself for college and the rest of my life by being an independent recording artist. During the course of my capstone, I will work with my music mentor Jessy Kyle to create a collection of songs and performances. I am in the process of creating a R&B album which contains songs that reflect my experiences. Experiences that are worth remembering and appreciated.I’ve selected Jessy Kyle to be my mentor because she can offer a great level of expertise on the music industry. She also offers expertise on being successful in the music industry because she is a musician. After my junior year, she has enhanced my level of writing and performing skills. This year, I’ll write and perform many songs. Songs that were inspired by my idols and songs that were created by me. As a musician, I am able to prepare for college auditions.

Beyoncé creating Dangerously In Love

This video source reveals Beyoncé Knowles’ work ethic during the creation of her album “Dangerously In Love”. In this video, she’s interviewed about each song in her album. This video also contains clips of her singing the songs. This source is helpful to me because it shows me a little bit about the recording process. The process which I haven’t experienced yet. I chose to analyze this video because Beyoncé has won 27 awards from the songs on the album. That is one of my goals. To be an award winning performer. A performer that not only creates music for entertainment, but for connection and understanding.

How to create an album:

This specific source is a website that is titled, “How To Make an Album Without a Recording Studio”. The website gives advice on how to record music outside of a recording studio. The website contains steps that should be taken after a long period of writing has been done. It suggests that the artist should use a recorder. This source is helpful for me because it gives me another alternative when creating music. It would be cheaper for me to record my song outside of a record studio. However for better song quality I’d have to record inside a studio.

This source is a website that is titled, “The 7 Steps to Making a Great Music Album” The website gives you seven steps to creating a “timeless article”. The steps are titled, Ideation, Background Arrangement, Recording, Music Production, Mixing. Every step gives very specific and helpful tips on how to make a timeless album. Each steps gives details on how to make the album timeless.

This source is a website titled, “ 9 Mistakes To Avoid When Recording Your Own Album”. This website is helpful to me because it gives me useful advice for my album. I’m glad that I came across this source because I think I would’ve maken the mistakes this website listed. Like Step 9 : Death, Taxes and At-That-Crucial-Point computer malfunction. They come to us all in the end. Back-up your work daily, weekly or even monthly….but make sure you do it. This would be the step that I would regret the most. To loss all my hard work. The other step that I make sure I’ll pay attention to is Step 1: That Odd Buzzing Noise Will Come Out In The Mix. The buzzing in the background would distract listeners from the greatness of my song.

The Association awards artists on the amount of albums or singles that are sold. There are different levels to these certifications. Gold, Diamond, Platinum, Multi-Platinum. This website lists the artist that have won each certification and how many times. The website is very important to me. I finally found out how to go platinum.

500,000 units: Gold album

1,000,000 units: Platinum album

2,000,000 or more units: Multi-Platinum album

10,000,000 units: Diamond album

Quotes:

"I miss that immersive experience, now people only listen to a few seconds of song on the iPods and they don't really invest in the whole experience. It's all about the single, and the hype. It's so much that gets between the music and the art and the fans. I felt like, I don't want anybody to get the message, when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it's ready and from me to my fans."

— Beyoncé describing her intentions with the unorthodox release of Beyoncé.[32]

This source is a quotes from recording artist Beyoncé Knowles. This quote is Beyoncé’s explanation for her spontaneous release of her fifth album Beyoncé. The reason I am using this quotes as a source is because it reveals her feelings for the music industry and selling process. Beyoncé states that she misses experiencing music being appreciated thoroughly.

Overview of the Capstone:

The whole point behind the capstone was to be able to create a garden that was going to be able to help grow and would be carried on by students of SLA if they wanted to try and extend the greenhouse into other possibilities that they might have come up with. We thought that being able to grow plants in a neighborhood we would be able to grow the plants and sell them for a greater cause, such as being able to raise money for teams in SLA like frisbee, baseball or even clubs if we could by selling the products to corner stores or grocery places that were willing to buy some vegetables or fruits and sell them to the public.

Overview of the Water System for the Garden:

The point for the water system to be able to have a substantial  amount of water to be able to grow the plants and have them grow healthy and stable. I came up with the plan of having a water system run under the soil and have the hose be pinched with tiny holes that would be able to have the water run through the hose and out the little holes being able to go straight to the roots to help it grow.  Unfortunately, we couldn’t run a water system under the soil because the greenhouse was not big enough to run one and also the way the soil and garden was made the garden was in the ground causing it a problem to be able to put a hose under it so the way we had to compromise was that we took a big bucket full of water and took cups to be able to pour the water onto the soil to be able to give the plants some type of moisture for them to begin growing.

For my capstone, I decided to attempt to construct a Tesla Coil in an attempt to learn more about electricity and magnetism, as well as to test my abilities as a builder and an engineer. In the process, I ran into a few issues. These mostly revolved around waiting for certain items to be delivered, or solving issues that arose when I did not have the required tools for what I wanted to do. I was, however, able to overcome these difficulties, and am glad to have had them as it worked to test my problem-solving skills.

PROOF OF EXISTENCE:

The above photo shows the parts to my Tesla Coil, though deconstructed. I had to take it apart in order to help a classmate with a device that I had yet he did not, and needed. Because I didn't take a picture of it when it was constructed, I have posted this picture. When it is reconstructed, it should work as intended.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY:

DevCoder, “How to build a Tesla Coil.” Instructables. Autodesk, n.d. Web.

This is a guide for construction a Tesla coil. This is the first website which I used to examine the steps required for building a Tesla coil. It goes through one method of construction of the coil clearly, and is a good starting point for seeing what must be done. This site did not explain to me how a Tesla coil worked, or what modifications to make in order to modify the build, but it did explain its methods well.

This is the second of two books outlining and explaining many physics topics. This book has a very in depth section on transformers and induction, as well as capacitance and many other important things. It offered a clear, yet complex, description and explanation for many of the things which are necessary for my project’s completion and understanding.

This is a intermediate physics textbook which explains many physics topics. This book provided a decent amount of information regarding induction and capacitance, and was helpful in my beginning to understand the concepts required for the completion of my project.

Lehrman, Robert L. Barron's E-Z Physics. Barron's Education Series, Inc., 2009. Print.

This is a beginner’s guide to many physics topics. This book was the first book from which I learned about electricity and magnetism, and also provided the least detailed description of the topics which I covered, but was very helpful with introducing me to the concepts required for the completion of my project.

This page provided me with a video of a plasma speaker working, and also has manuals for the creation of plasma speakers from kits purchasable on their website. While they don’t directly apply to my work, they can provide some sort of guidance for what must be done.

Plasmana, “The Plasma Speaker.” Instructables. Autodesk, n.d. Web.

This is a guide for the construction of a plasma speaker. It was very helpful to see one method of making it, though my method will involve the modification of a Tesla coil, rather than the method used in the guide.

This page of the website gives, among other things, a somewhat cursory overview of how a Tesla coil works. In conjunction with resources regarding the theory behind induction, capacitance, and other things in the field of electricity and magnetism, the page provides an acceptable overview of the theory behind a Tesla coil.

Xellers, “How To Build A Spark Gap Tesla Coil (SGTC) Step 3: Build the Primary Capacitor.” Instructables. Autodesk, n.d. Web.

This page of the guide discusses equations for matching capacitors to primary circuit. This particular step of the guide gave me the equation I needed in order to match a capacitor to my build, and was therefore extremely helpful with the construction of the coil.

Success at SLA 101

Erin Garvey ℅ 2014

Success at SLA 101 is about my peers and I individual definition of success during our high school careers. Success is an individual feeling. Everyone has personal goals, and being successful depends on whether or not you reached those goals here at SLA. Making my opinions, and the 5 core values of SLA I will demonstrate what I’ve received during my 4 year high school experience. I will also ask, and take incite from other students in the community and determine if they too feel just as successful as defined, and if not, what advice will they have for incoming freshman and other underclassmen.

Green House

Abstract

In the beginning of the year me and my teammates came up with the idea that we would find a way to grow fruits and vegetables to donate to out community as our capstone. As time passed and we grew our idea we decided that we should build a green house to grow the plants in since it would be a good team project and also a good growing environment for the plants. when we had to assign tasks to each member of the group to handle on their own I knew that I wanted to have a part in the construction of the green house since I like to work with my hands. So after doing some research on both a construction and growing plan we came up with a list of plants we would grow and the exact design we wanted to do that would work the best in the area we had. We first started the construction of the greenhouse by clearing the lot we had and than making the wood base that we would later connect 10 foot pieces of pvc to. Once we had created the full frame we just had to cover the entire thing with a thick plastic wrap. When we finished building all that was left to do was plant our seeds in the fresh soiil and hook up our watering system.

Part I

http://www.powtoon.com/p/bxNX52TCF0N/

Y dejo a ella sola.

Ella estaba mirando a Clemens entonces, él caminó a ella. “¿Hola Señora, cómo estás?”. Ella ve a Clemens y le dice “nada”. Entonces, Clemens habló otra vez. “¿Señora, estás bien?”.Después de cinco minutos el habló otra vez, “ Señor, no me conoces pero, sé mucho sobre ti. Eres Robert Clemens. El maestro de nombres de calles. ¿Es cierto, eh?” Clemens vio a la mujer con asombro.Él caminó detrás…. “¿Cómo me conoces?”

Sinceramente,

Rosaline Broad.”

“Rosaline Broad….. hmmmm.

Jaccar Garcia Capstone

Jaccar Garcia

Topic: Latin and Hip-Hop Dance

Mentor:
Faustina Garcia

Abstract Paragraph:

For Capstone I decided to continue the Latin dance but to also include new material. I taught a latin and hip-hop dance class in order to appeal to more individuals, giving me the opportunity to work with more students. I want to be capable of showing the students involved about a different world that they encounter often. Giving them a learning experience without them knowing, along with the learning the dances. I’ll be diving into the latin culture of dance, learning myself about the roots of my culture. Being able to express this knowledge through dance is something that I have had a huge interest in for years but haven’t had the ability to take at hand.

In the process of my capstone I acquired a concussion. This became an obstacle for me and did not allow me to finish my capstone the way I hoped for it turn out. I had envisioned an “end of the year” culture party where I would have the students perform the dances they learned and allow the guest to join in on the dancing. Though this was not accomplished, I’m still proud of how much I got done up to that point. I was reaching my goal with the students which not only was to teach them about a different culture but to share a joyful environment with adolescents who wanted to be involved.

Annotated Bibliography:

Bush '03, Jilaan M., "The Effect of Extracurricular Activities on School Dropout" (2003). Honors Projects. Paper 16.

http://digitalcommons.iwu.edu/psych_honproj/16

This is a study made by Jilaan M. Bush on the effect of extracurricular activities on school dropout. With this study it was concluded that extracurricular activities such as academic clubs, athletics, interest groups, and fine arts had a positive effect on school dropouts. This indicates that the more students become involved in activities of their interest they become less likely to dropout of school and have more chances of success. This resource relates back to the inquiry aspect of my capstone which is “How does a dance club help the youth of Philadelphia?”.

Eccles, Jacquelynne S. "Extracurricular Activities and Adolescent Development." Journal of Social Issues. Vol. 59. Ann Arbor: N. D., 2001. 865-89. Print.

This article address’ the positive influence of extracurricular activities within adolescents and include many statistics on the topic. The article and data concluded that the adolescents who joined and extracurricular activity had better educational outcomes oppose to those who didn’t join a extracurricular activity had higher rates of drinking. This article along with the study by Jilaan together help my capstone with the inquiry and support my reasoning for it.

Gibbons, Elizabeth. Teaching Dance: The Spectrum of Styles. Bloomington, IN: AuthorHouse, 2007. Print.

Through out this book the author Elizabeth Gibbons gives the reader many advice on

teaching dance. She helps the reader who is teaching dance to adults, the reader who is a beginner at teaching, a college teacher, etc. She covers every detail necessary to teach a dance class. Breaking it down the reader should be focused on, what the questions the reader should be thinking of, to helping the reader understand how to approach making lessons plans and what the requirements need to be met in order to have be a successful teacher and have a successful dance class.

Hernandez, Deborah Pacini. Bachata: A Social History of Dominican Popular Music. Philadelphia: Temple UP, 1995. Print.

This book gives the history behind the music of Dominican Republic. This including the genre that I have included in my capstone; bachata. This  is like the book Language of Spanish Dance but instead of giving an overall view of all spanish dances this book goes into depth about the specific genre that I am focused on.

Mack, Lorrie. Dance. London: DK, 2012. Print.

This book focuses on the history of dance, giving the reader insights to the various styles of dance and their origination. This book helps to serve as inspiration, allowing the reader to understand dance better. For myself this is a good resource for my knowledge throughout my lessons. Being able to know where it is certain dance styles originated from and what inspired them could help me see dance from a new perspective and teach my class the knowledge i’ve gained.

Minton, Sandra Cerny, and Karen Genoff. Modern Dance, Body and Mind: A Basic Approach for Beginners. Englewood, CO: Morton, 1984. Print.

This resource is an opportunity to learn from Sandra Minton, within this book she tackles modern dance and gives the reader a basic approach to learning modern dance. She goes into detail about the techniques of the dance and the dance movement. This book will give me another perspective along with her other book, Since she does well with going into detail about the dance techniques I can have a better understanding of what is necessary to know in able to allow others understand it.

Matteo, and Carola Goya. The Language of Spanish Dance. Norman: University of Oklahoma, 1990. Print.

This book goes into great depth about the spanish dances; Matteo describes the dance moves, their origins, their meaning, the movement sequences, and much more. The depth in this book helps me for my the presentation part of my capstone. Since I decided to latin dance this books help me explain in my presentation why it is that each dance move was the way it was or basic reasoning for some of the choices within the choreography. The book also explains the songs accompanied with the songs and what’s going on with the rhythm.

Minton, Sandra Cerny. Choreography: A Basic Approach Using Improvisation. Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics, 1997. Print.

This book is a approach to teaching the readers about the process of choreographing. Sandra Minton the author displays the process down to every last detail, of stage production, improvisation, the creation of dances from simple movements, and the process of creating productions from the choreographed dances. This book covers choreographing for all dance styles, including cheerleading.

Williams, Ann-Marie, and Jeff Kulak. Learn to Speak Dance: A Guide to Creating, Performing, & Promoting Your Moves. Toronto, Ont.: Owlkids, 2011. Print.

Ann-Marie takes the initiative to show her readers different aspects of dance in her book Learn to Speak Dance. Including myriad types on choreography, staging, designs and everything related to dance. This book can help me with the small things that the other book might not address which is the way dance looks, the little tips are what make the biggest differences. This should help when I record our final dances and make the presentations.

Songs

Brown, Chris. "Love More." Rec. 2013. Chris Brown. FRESHM3N III, n.d. CD.

Grace, Leslie. "Be My Baby." Rec. 2013. Leslie Grace. N.d. CD.

Santos, Romeo. Propuesta Indecente. Romeo Santos. Sony Music Latin, 2013. CD.

These are the songs that I have included in my capstone. The first song is Love More by Chris brown. This song is apart of my hip-hop class and was chosen because of the uplifting beat it had. Once I heard it I began to come up with several dances to the song, it’s the type of song that I knew my class would enjoy and get hype when they hear it. The second song is Be My Baby by Leslie Grace which had the same effect on me as Love More. The Third song is Propuesta Indecente by Romeo Santos and I knew I wanted to choreograph this song because it tells a story, and that’s something I was capable to portray within the dance.

"Calláte y deja me hablar!" dijo Mars. "Vamos a engañarlo a Pluto.

Jupiter pedio a Mars:

"Donde esta Pluto?"

Mars le dijo que Pluto salió a explorar en espacio y no se devuelto.

Jupiter era muy triste. Y lloraba y lloraba. Y se suicidarse. Y por eso no es verde, ahora es rojo-morron. Y porque Pluto se murió, los humanos se dijeron "Pluto no es un planeta."

My capstone is a comic book, well more like a book of comics. I tried to keep on one single plot the whole time however my mind kept going to different ideas so I created a book of short comics with a how to draw section at the end. I plan on further developing the comics and characters after I graduate. I would like to thank Mr. Miles, Ms. Garvey-Gorgio, Ms. Hull, and Alex Woodburn for their help and support.

NOTE: THIS COMIC IS A GIFT TO THE SCHOOL AND IT WILL REMAIN IN THE SCHOOL LIBRARY AS I WOULD LIKE TO COME VISIT AND STILL BE ABLE TO READ MY CREATION. Thank You

This project started in the summer between my junior and senior year of high school, around August of 2013. Most of the work in the summer was figuring out the main plot of the comic and what characters of mine will be used. When school started, I gathered more information about the capstone and that it has to relate to the 5 core values of SLA. So all of them were pretty much covered except for collaboration. I decided that for the collaboration aspect I would give the students a chance to create a character (hero/villain/other) who could appear in the comic. I’ve also been working with Alex Woodburn who's been like an unofficial mentor giving me tips on how to make my characters seem anatomically correct. From September to February I’ve been planning and adjusting my comic to fit with the characters submitted. In February, I started working on the final comic. I decided it will be black and white since I don’t have the means to color it effectively. Now I am working on the end of the comic theres actually a post on Facebook about of the Student Created Characters for all of the original characters there is a section at the back of the comic to give them credit and admiration.

Abstract:

My capstone is about epidemic of homelessness in Philadelphia. There were 12,053 homeless people in Philadelphia in 2013 alone, a statistic that was widely overlooked by the general public. I figured that one of the best gifts or memory I could leave behind was knowledge of someone else's life, so that's what I set out to inform people on. My filming partner Martez Card and I took to the streets of downtown Philadelphia to interview different homeless people about their daily experiences/routines. We turned these interviews into a short film that captures our experience. This capstone has broadened my perspective of "hard times". I no longer feel capable of being upset over little things after witnessing less fortunate people still possessing the ability to smile.

1.

"Project HOME - Facts on Homelessness." Project HOME - Facts on Homelessness. Project HOME, n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <http://projecthome.org/advocacy/facts.php>.

This site helped me by defining the idea of a homeless person. I for one didn’t know that someone living with family, and depend on them fully, can be considered homeless. I also weren’t away of some of the many causes of homelessness like lack of health care, drugs, etc. This site gives many statistics produced by the most recent U.S Census. The stats were enlightening and new to me, and I think will go great in my end of the year presentation.

"Homelessness." Directory of Aging Resources. Philadelphia Committee to End Homelessness, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2014. <http://www.pcacares.org/OrganizationDetail.aspx?organization=Philadelphia Committee to End Homelessness (PCEH)>.

This site helped me by raising my awareness of the methods being currently used to counteract homelessness. The Philadelphia Committee to End Homelessness, starting in 2005, has been working since to fight one of the worst problems in the city. This site also helped me by giving me the contact information for people who are experts in my capstone’s field. This gives me the opportunity to become more equipped in this particular field of expertise.

3.

"Advanced Search." JustGive.org. I Do Donation, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2014. <https://www.justgive.org/donations/help-homeless.jsp>.

This site is unlike the rest, but still gives very beneficial information. It’s unlike the rest because this site gives actual advice on what you can do to help out anyone who is considered homeless. It gives a list of 35 critical things that could be easily accessed and given to homeless people. Many people think that only money can be given to them, and though that is very important, there’s more that can be done. That’s why this site is so important.

4."Long Periods of Uncertainty." What Is It like to Be Homeless? Shelter, n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2014. <http://england.shelter.org.uk/campaigns/why_we_campaign/tackling_homelessness/what_is_homelessness_like>.

This site gives you a more broadened perspective of homelessness. INstead of the obvious lack of food, water, and money, it lists other detriments that come with it. Lack of education for homeless children, the fear of being robbed and harassed, and many other things. Many people think that “street people” have a narrow list of problems, which isn’t the case. Also, people think that homeless children aren’t common, when in fact they are a large percentage of the population.

This site is beneficial because it gives a personal point of view from someone who was in a rough homeless position. The other sites display statistics and biased materials when giving perspective of the situation. The writer of the article is someone who spent most of his young adult life on the streets. He talks about his adventures, which gives the reader better insight. This source can prove reliable when we run our experiment.

This source speaks on the ban that the city of Philadelphia tried to have emplaced. The judge blocked this ban even though the Mayor had some reasons that could possibly make a good case for this to have happened. The mayor talks about how the homeless need other things than just food and this is why he tried to put the food ban into action.

This source gives you an overall view of the project home and the different things that it helps the homeless with. It shows you the way that they help the homeless children get their education it shows the time of job opportunities that they offer to people to help out the homeless and it also shows the different kinds of housing and medical care.

This source talks about the economic issues that are found with homelessness and also the change in the amount of homeless people who are out here on the streets due to something happening in their life. It shows the change from 2011-2012 and begins to talk about 2013. It also says that homelessness is caused due to the fact in which people have the inability to pay for housing due to the income made by everyone in the house. The income made per household is also dropping.

For this project my goal was to create a blog where students of any age could go to and find the latest fashion trends and styles of their choice for a cheaper cost. While creating this blog I had to keep in mind that many different students have different interest in fashion. Making creating this very difficult, because I had to keep in mind that not everyone likes the same things. There were lots of challenges while creating this blog. Some challenges that i have faced were being able to cover every base when it comes to fashion. Fashion is a very broad topic, so when you decide to create something relating to fashion, you have to be very specific. Which why I broke it down by seasons, celebrity looks, the hottest trends , and everyday fashion. I had to research where these items are online and possible in stores to find these looks and be able to compare the look the student may be looking for and where the student could find it and mimic this look. This was a very long process and very time consuming. But it made me very knowledgeable with things I have not known before. For example, where fashion has originated from, and how certain styles evolved. How can people wear certain clothing to still complete a look without having exact clothing. Overall I feel as though this was a fun and challenging project. I enjoyed being able to hopefully help other people as well as learning new things and helping myself. I also believe that if I would have started this blog maybe years ago, it could have been more well put together. If I could go back and do something differently,I would not do as many styles and trends. I say this because it was very difficult to find these styles for cheaper cost.

HERE is a link to download my Final Capstone!

Mentors: Douglas Herman and Olivia Smith. Mr. Herman started the program that I made the documentary about and teaches every Digital Video class at Science Leadership Academy. Olivia Smith was one of Mr. Hermans students and is a Hermanator Advisee Alum. She has helped by teaching me shooting and editing skills. Also she has been a big help in helping me find myself as a person through this Capstone process.

Summary: My Capstone is a documentary Proposal for the Roughcut and Digital Video programs. It showcases what has been done and what will be done whether or not we have modern/high quality materials.

Abstract: My Capstone process has been a very steady but challenging road. My documentary shows the amazing things that students can learn in the classes that are provided, and ways that Rough Cut Productions has benefitted not only the students, but other organizations as well. I filmed throughout the year and made sure to capture myself in the final product along with the people who created the program, and current program leaders. I really worked hard to fit as many great aspects of film and video into the documentary as I could, but it was difficult due to the fact that there are an abundance of good things to say about the program and I was working around a time limit for my final product. Even though it was hard to include everything, I learned new ways to edit video while creating my piece. A few things were split screen video, how to match sound and video when the tracks separate, and also how to make things look as professional as possible even when the highest quality of video is not available.

This book was very insightful. I thought that it was very helpful because it gave me a great idea for the way that I should edit the documentary. I was very pleased with what I found in the book. the book told me that I should not go to film with a set idea in my mind, otherwise the project will not turn out to be successful. In order for this documentary to show Roughcut and Digital Videos true colors, it needs to be painfully truthful in a sense.

2. Room 237. Dir. Rodney Ascher. Perf. Bill Blakemore, Geoffrey Cocks, Julie Kearns, and John Fell Ryan. Sundance, 2012. DVD.

This film was one of the first documentary’s I have actually sat through and been engaged in. This was a film about all of the crazy incidences that happened in the movie the Shining directed by Stanley Kubrick. What I took from this was that even though the footage for the voiceovers was not from any of Kubrick's films, the footage was relevant to what the people were saying about his work ethic. I thought it was pretty cool because I was just thinking of  doing actual footage that I took but it occurred to me that I can you archival footage from previous students of previous years.

3. Spector, Col. "5 Simple Mistakes Documentary Filmmakers Make." Raindance Film Festival. Raindance Film Partnership, 2012. Web. 30 Jan. 2014.

This website helped SO MUCH. It basically showed you what not to do in a documentary that I think a lot of people pass up. There are many ways that a documentary can go and if you do everything that this website says not to, you, my friend, are in for naptime. This website showed me what not to do to be able to keep all of my viewers awake and engaged. For example; I had to be able to film without a set outcome in mind because if I would have done that, I would have been looking in the wrong places for people to interview. It basically says to just take a camera and see what people think about the topic.

4. Man on Wire. Dir. James Marsh. Prod. Simon Chinn. By Igor Martinovic, Michael Nyman, J. Ralph, and Jinx Godfrey. Magnolia Pictures, 2008. DVD.

This movie really pushed me to take risks with how I would like to shoot my documentary. I saw this documentary in 2012 in advisory, but did not think anything of it. When I started thinking about really sitting down and trying to figure out what I need to do to film a documentary, I thought of Man on Wire. I used a few shots that were in this movie. There is a shot where the camera is on the ground and is tilted up to see an image which is what the director did in this film with the twin towers. I also thought that this movie did a really good job of keeping the story going.

6. Spellbound. Dir. Jeffrey Blitz. Prod. Jeffrey Blitz and Sean Welch. Perf. Neil Kadakia, Emily Stagg, Ashley White, April DeGideo, Harry Altman, Angela Arenivar, Nupur Lala, and Ted Brigham. ThinkFilm Inc., 2002.

This film was pretty interesting. It helped me move my story line along in very interesting ways also. Even though the film is 11 years old, I thought that the editing was very well done. I used driving shots of driving to the spellers houses in my video to show that our school is inner city and kind of exaggerate a few things in the film. I also used another transition that they showed which is showing part of a town with a name and then showing the full image of the town and making the name disappear for  my opening credits. I really wanted my film to be as interesting as this because it really kept me involved on a topic that seemed boring to me when I picked it up.

7. Shaner, Pete, and Gerald E. Jones. Digital Filmmaking for Teens. Boston, MA: Thomson Course Technology Professional Trade Reference, 2005. Print.

This was helpful just for the filming side of things. The title really threw me off and I was really unsure of if I even wanted to read it. It blew me away though by the simple fact of having a chapter on how to make it look like you have been doing this for years. There are tricks and certain ways to film that I used in my documentary. It was really easy to pull off also.

8. Herman, Douglas F. "Roughcut Productions." Roughcut Productions. Roughcut Productions, 2009. Web. 2013.

This is the Roughcut website. This was interesting to me for my project because it describes the first few years of the program and the people that started it. It also has plenty of archival footage that is easily accessible for my usage. This was the start of my  inspiration for this project. I was really intrigued by the way the website was set up and how everything was made.

9. Herman, Douglas F. "Partners (Global)." Environmental Portraiture Partners Global Comments. Douglas Herman, 2011. Web. 2013.

This is Mr. Hemans website where he keeps all of his photos from other places in the world. This really helped me believe it or not because there is a portion from when he was in India. Roughcut is currently teaching a course online to students in India which I will touch on in my project. I went to his website to look at the differences in their environment and ours to try to help myself get a few things straightened out in my head because I wanted to see what it might be like to take this class in a different country.

10. Herman, Douglas. "RoughCutProductions Plus." Vimeo. Douglas Herman, 2009. Web. 2014.

This is another place where I can get archival footage for my documentary. I mostly pulled from one specific video which is the 2012/2013 film festival. This is where all of the videos from those two years were made and collected. That was the year that I really started digital video and had films in the full two hour long piece to showcase everything we did that year. I thought it would help because it is the most recent thing other than the few things we have from this year.

Jamekea S. Lee Capstone

Abstract

For my capstone I mentored young girls at my old middle school every Wednesday for eight weeks. Each week we discussed different topics such as, Social Media, Family and Friends, Violence, School, Society Views, and Self- Respect. As we had our discussion there was also assignments that the girl had to work on, which were all based on the topic of discussion. The goal of this capstone was to understand how young girls think, how the react, and what influence their actions. Each of the young girls had a journal which they wrote in just about every week about how they was feeling and I responded back to them each week. Through the course of the program I learned so much about these girls. I went in expecting them to be distanced and unwilling to work but they were open and allowed me to get personal. I learned that some young girls only need for someone to take the time out of their day and just listen, listen to their feelings and thoughts, knowing that they wouldn’t be judge. They made me realize that no matter what age you are, you’re still vulnerable and want people to be there for you, no matter how strong you are. This was a learning experience for not only the girls but for me.

COARD, STEPHANIE IRBY, ALFIEE M. BRELAND, and PATRICIA RASKIN . Perceptions of and Preferences for Skin Color, Black Racial Identity, and Self-Esteem Among African Americans. Journal of Applied Social Psychology, 2001. Web. <http://www.uncg.edu/hdf/facultystaff/Coard/Publications/Perceptions and Preferences for Skin Color.pdf>.

I chose to use this online book as a source because I think it’ll be a interesting read and it would help with my capstone. The book is about Black Racial Identity and the perceptions of it, I think it would be interesting to “learn” in a way about how blacks are looked at in society. If I learn more about how blacks are looked at in society, then I can teach the girls and tell them why it’s important to have a good character so society can have more respect for themselves. I’ll incorporate my findings into my work.

"Community Violence: The Effects on Children." The Child Study Center. NYU Langone Medical Center. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.aboutourkids.org/articles/community_violence_effects_children>.

This source is reliable because it breaks down how the community a child lives in can play a part in their behavior. If a child grows up in a bad neighborhood, then they will have bad tendencies because they don’t necessarily have the right role models to follow. I can like at this source as a what-not-to-do, and try to be a good role model for the girls I’m teaching. This source isn’t the go to source for everything though, I wouldn’t use this as what-to-do source but I’ll definitely use this as a fallback source.

DuRant, Robert, Chris Cadenhead, Robert Pendergrast, Greg Slavens, and Charles Linder. Factors Associated with the Use of Violence among Urban Black Adolescents. 84. 1994. <http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1614778/pdf/amjph00455-0086.pdf>.

I chose to use this source because it was a study to examine social and psychological factors associated with black adolescence. This sources relates to my capstone because I’m studying why black adolescent girls have little respect for themselves. This source states how community played a role in their decisions, I also think that community plays a role in the way black girls choose to represent themselves to the world. This source is very reliable and helpful for my capstone. I’ll use this source as the basis of my curriculum and to help plan out my activities for my capstone.

Galbreath, Lydia. Philosophy of the African American Identity Crisis: A Double Consciousness Exploration (2011): n.pag. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://urpasheville.org/proceedings/ncur2011/papers/NP50231.pdf>.

I chose to use this as a source because it’s about black racial identity which will help with my capstone. This source looks thoroughly into the Double Consciousness Theory and the role it plays in the African American lives. I found this source very reliable because it’s study and an overview of the African American culture and their lives. It’s a good source about the black society and how it’s viewed by people from other ethnicities, which will help me explain my reasoning for my capstone to the kids. It will help a lot with my curriculum and what I’m trying to do with my capstone.

Khattri, Nidhi, Kevin W. Riley, and Michael B. Kane.Students At Risk in Poor, Rural Areas: A Review ofthe Research. Pelavin Research Institute. 13, No.2. Journal of Research in Rural Education, 79-100. Web. <http://www.jrre.psu.edu/articles/v13,n2,p79-100,Khattri.pdf>.

This source is very reliable because it’s a online excerpt from a book published by people affiliated with Pelvain Research Institution. The book is about students who may be at risk in poor, rural areas which relates to my capstone because I’m working at a middle school in North Philly which is in a rural neighborhood. I can use the information I get from this source and feed it to my audience. I can teach about the risk they are at and how to prevent falling into traps of living in such a community. This source will help me spread information about how much community influences an individual behaviors.

"Middle School Survival." Understanding and Raising Girls. PBSParents. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <https://www.pbs.org/parents/raisinggirls/friends/mid1.html>.

I chose to use this source as a reference because it about middle school girls behavior. This source breaks down why some middle school girls act out in school and why their behavior may be bad. This source is a great start for me understanding the minds of middle school girl, while it may not be the best thing when trying to fully understand middle school girls, it is a good starting point. I can reflect on this site when I feel as though I’m having a hard time with the girls, this source will give me understanding of what’s going on.

"Parenting, the Social Environment and its Effects on Child Development." Virtual Medical Centre. Virtual Medical Centre, n.d. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.myvmc.com/lifestyles/parenting-the-social-environment-and-its-effects-on-child-development/>.

I think this source is reliable because it breaks down everything about parenting and social environmental effects on child development. My capstone was originally about how parents and the environment plays a major role in a child’s life but I changed it around a bit because I thought it was too broad and would cause a lot of problems. However, I will touch on the topic in a more settle and discreet way, so this source is good for me to pull information from. This source is also reliable for me to reflect on and even show the girls so they can look at it too.

Popkin, Susan J., Tama Leventhal, and Gretchen Weismann. Girls in the 'Hood: How Safety Affects the Life Chances of Low-Income Girls. Urban Affairs Review, Web. <http://www.dedoose.com/PDF/Publications/Popkin, Leventhal, Weismann_2010_Girls in the Hood.pdf>.

I chose to use this source because it relates a lot to my capstone. For my capstone I’m talking to 6th grade girls about self respect. Rather me taking up eight weeks to talk just about self respect, I want to give them facts about more things. Such as how society views them and what messages they’re sending out to society. I want to show the girls the long term effect of the choices they are making at such a young age. By referencing this site, I’ll be able to show them the work of people who actually study these sorts of things and that will helpfully help them understand more.

Stack, Carol. All Our Kin: Strategies for Survival in a Black Community. New York: Basic Books, A Member of the Perseus Books Group, 1997. 22-57. Web. <http://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=kDarMIro39YC&oi=fnd&pg=PR7&dq=black+adolescent+community&ots=K_7thnXl7V&sig=qv2s3ClE3Iifbot23Bu1BOqHNxU#v=onepage&q=black%20adolescent%20community&f=false

This source is very reliable for my capstone because within the book it has chapters about black communities and how they play a major role in black adolescents lives. I thought the chapters within the book were helpful in helping me understand more about the black community. Even though I’m from a black community, it’s good to have another insight about it from other people.  This source will be very reliable for getting information that I’ll need to complete my capstone and to help others understand my capstone. I’ll not only give people of different ethnicity a view of the black community but it will give African Americans a view of the black community.

"Youth in Action: Teens Forming Teens." What Kids Can Do. What Can Kids Do, Inc. Web. 29 Jan 2014. <http://www.whatkidscando.org/featurestories/2008/08_youth_in_action/index.html>.

When I reviewed this site I was looking to find articles about young black adolescence and their behavior. However, I was surprised when I seen a featured story about teens helping teens because it relates a lot to my capstone. This article helped me understand how to approach my audience in a more fun and interesting way rather than just laying facts out to them. It inspired me to make activities where they’ll teach me about their experiences and the reasons for the decisions they make. Although this source isn’t reliable for my whole capstone it is a good starting point for the activities I’m going to make.
