Media Fluency

Hi, I'm Pedro Castillo. For this project, we were asked to create a slide describing ourselves using what we learned about design from presentation zen. For my slide I tried to use the same colors to keep everything balanced out. I wanted to use this green because I personally thought it was appealing and it would be a color that people would remember. I chose to make everything bright because I wanted my slide to catch people's eye. I chose this font because I felt that it went along with the picture perfectly. The green outline was placed around the words to match with the picture. I decided not to make the picture bleed and not to have much empty space. My theme for the slide was music because it's something that everyone likes and the colors and the picture could easily attract people's eye.

Media Fluency

This is my Media Fluency slide. This slide displays my greatest passion, music. I like most music genres but I really like rock and classic rock, my favorite band is The Beatles.

First I looked for an image of The Beatles that was not to crammed. I decided not to place my text inside of the only empty space because personally, I think more empty space on a slide looks nice. For the text, I wanted to make sure that it had a good color contrast and stood out against the black and white so I used a bright color but not too bright. I determined the size and placement of the text based off of the image, I wanted the text to be seen but I did not want to block any important parts of the image. Sense I wanted to have same empty space, I used the rule of thirds to find out where the best location for the text could be.

Media Fluency

I wanted my media fluency slide to be bold and have a flowing design on it. To fulfill this, I took a PearlJam poster and edited the photo to insert my name. It includes the elements of contrast, alignment, depth, and texture which we learned in Tech class. In my slide, I used a lot of contrast by using a warm color, red, and a cool color, cyan blue, on top of a black background to make the colors stand out. I also used some hints of white to make the slide brighter. I followed the element of alignment by placing my name in the empty space in the center of the design. My slide also has depth in the banner at the top and texture in the wings and in other aspects of the design.
Tech Presentation 12-3-13 (1)
For my second slide, I decided to change the random spots of blue in the design of the wings to red to blend in with the rest of the design. I also decided to change the Buenos Aires to Philly to make it more personalized. From doing this project, I learned the guidelines to follow when making an appealing presentation. These guidelines include the rule of thirds, contrast, empty space, depth, texture, and other artistic elements. I also learned a lot about editing pictures which I was inept at when I first started this project. This project also taught me that it's the little details in your presentation that can take it from decent to amazing.

Aldo

aldo
Hi, I'm Aldo. My presentation will be about something i have experience (life events) with. My slide as you can see tells you about how ‘The smallest things cause biggest problems’ and i will be talking about something that i can relate too about alcohol. I have seen people mess all there lives up with just one drink and this slide is best way to prevent future generation from those  mistakes. As i found from the websites about how to make slides, it said have the picture grab the audience attention. I used only one picture as my theme so the person would not get confused about the slide one picture should grab their attention. And for the empty space, i wrote my quote in bold and in a 30 size font. The best way to get the reader to see it and for it to be aligned without the words going off the page and i also made it in bold to keep the persons attention. Also this slides helps me remember just by looking at it what i am going say.

Cluelessly Tamed In The Name of Reputation

Cluelessly Tamed In The Name of Reputation

A paper on the book “Taming of The Shrew” and movie “Clueless”.

Both the book “Taming of The Shrew” and movie “Clueless” show how relationships are used to represent power in specific societies. Katherine, the evil sister in “Taming of The Shrew”, was pressured to get married as soon as possible. She was viewed as overdue for marriage by traditional standards. Cher, the rich main character of Clueless, found it necessary to find a suitor of a respectable stature in order to not ruin her reputation. She later in the film influenced a new member of her society to do the same to save her from embarrassment. In the end, both Katherine and Cher found that engaging in romantic bonds for status did not leave them with a compatible partner. While Cher refuted her status relationships and found a mate more ideal, although not socially acceptable, Katherine was entwined by marriage. She had no choice but to compromise her feelings in order to conform to her society’s regulations. Engaging in romantic relationships with the purpose to maintain or gain power can leave one unsatisfied with their partner.

While Cher was being driven home from a party by her friend Elton, he began to come on to her. Cher found this disappointing and confusing since she had been making efforts to be matchmaker for Tai, the new girl in town, and Elton. Elton appeared to have responded well to these attempts, asking for the pictures of Tai that Cher had taken and helping to revive Tai when she passed out. But when Cher stated her assumption of his connection to her, Elton replied by saying that Cher and he made more sense together than he did with Tai. Finishing off his rant, he said, “Do you even know who my father is?!” He asks this rhetorical question because Cher knows his father is a famous producer. Cher tells him he is a snob for saying that he could not be with the new girl because he was wealthier than her.

“Thus, in plain terms: your father hath consented

That you shall be my wife, your dowry agreed on,

And, will you, nill you, I will marry you.

Act 2, Scene 1, Lines 284-286

On page 83 of Taming of The Shrew, Petruchio makes the point that his wealth is prominent and asks what he can be assured if he marries Katherine. He is promised half of her father’s land and twenty thousand crowns once he is deceased. Petruchio says that for Katherine’s hand in marriage, she will receive all his lands and leases if her death succeeds his. Material possession played a role in the ability to create a romantic connection with someone. Later on when talking to Katherine, Petruchio informs her that she is indicted to marry him, whether she likes it or not. Hundreds of years ago, there was less choice and more force relating romantic connections compared to just a few decades ago.

Cher fell for a preppy exchange student, Christian. He asked to go a party with her and she agreed. When Christian comes to pick up Cher at her house, he meets her father. The protective man asks “Do you drink?” and Christian responds by saying “No thanks.” Cher’s father became annoyed because he did not like his sarcasm relating to her daughter’s safety while in a vehicle. He answers by saying “What’s wrong with you, kid? You think the death of Sammy Davis left an opening in the Rat Pack?” Cher’s dad did not care about the boy’s wealth, but rather his daughter’s safety.

“Call you me daughter? Now I promise you

You have showed a tender fatherly regard,

to wish me to one half lunatic, A madcap rufflian and a swearing Jack,

that thinks it oaths to face the matter out.”

Act 2, Scene 1, Lines 302-306

Compared to Cher’s father’s cautiousness, Katherine’s father seemed quite careless about his daughter’s well-being. After being told that she must marry the crazed Petruchio, Katharina expresses her disdain for her father’s choice of a husband. She felt Baptista betrayed her simply for a promised dowry.

As Cher began to take a stronger liking to Christian, she became tamed to his ambiguous behavior. The night that he came to watch movies at her house, Cher offered to make him coffee still he was tired. He replied by saying “Can’t, I got the ulcer.” But Cher questioned this statement by reminding he had cappuccinos in her presence in the past. He said “Oh, well, you know, that was like, foam…” Even though it was an absurd rebuttal, she did not dispute it.

“Forward, I pray, since we have come so far,

And be it the moon, or sun, or what you please.”

Act 4, Scene 5, Lines 14-15

As a tactic to tame his shrew, Petruchio made an attempt to convince Katherine that it was night when it was indisputably day. They bickered back and forth until Katharina finally accepted his inaccurate plea. She disregarded her own sense in order to please her husband. Cher did the same when faced with an illogic statement from Christian.

“Taming of The Shrew” exemplified the necessity of conformity to social hierarchies in ancient times. Marriage continues to be an avowal of one’s devotion to another person. However, there is more freedom when deciding who with which one will a commitment. In "Clueless",Cher chose her suitor freely, even if her father did not approve. Katharina was required to have consent from her father before becoming married. Both women had material wealth play a part with whom they were dedicated. This, in turn, forced them to make emotional compromises. When a relationship is built on status or possession, romantic satisfaction may be jeopardized.

Female Dominance In Relationships Can Be Deceiving

Comparing “Taming Of The Shrew” to “Deliver Us From Eva”

As “Taming Of The Shrew” proves, that female dominance in relationships can be deceiving. In “Taming Of The Shrew”,  Petruchio sets out to tame Katherine, a harsh, irritable woman whose aggressive attitude enables her to have control in her relationships . Deceived by deception, Katherine eventually gives up fighting with Petruchio and instead gives her unconditional love to him. In the 2003 romantic comedy “Deliver Us From Eva”, a similar situation happens. Ray, the neighborhood playboy, is bribed by his friends and is sent to tame Eva, a very uptight young woman who constantly interfere in the affairs of her sisters and their husbands. The plan goes by smoothly, but troubles comes their way when Ray actually falls in love with Eva. Both “The Taming Of The Shrew” and “Deliver Us From Eva” makes it seem that females can often seem as though they have the upper hand in relationships because of their controlling qualities, but it is actually the males who are more dominant because they can tame the females into doing what they want.

Though Petruchio and Ray have similar goals, they both use different tactics to prove their dominance and restore their positions as alpha males. It shows that the expectation of a male in a relationship is to control any type of female dominance. These two situations are similar being  that they are formed around honesty and deception, though they differ by showing that the expectation of a male in a relationship is to attain authority and for a female is to be controlled.

PETRUCHIO:

“Signior Baptista, my business asketh haste,

And every day I cannot come to woo.

You knew my father well, and in him me,

Left solely heir to all his lands and goods,

Which I have bettered rather than decreased.

Then tell me, if I get your daughter’s love,

What dowry shall I have with her to wife?

BAPTISTA:

After my death, the one half of my lands,

And, in possession, twenty thousand crowns.”

(Act 2, Scene 1)

In this quote, Petruchio and Baptista are conversing on the plan of wooing Katherine. Baptista agrees to pay Petruchio twenty-thousand crowns and half of his land if Petruchio succeeds in attaining Katherine love. On the understanding that Baptista is willing to go any extent on Petruchio wooing Katherine, shows male superiority to getting what they want when they want it. This aside makes the setting very intense.

In “Deliver Us From Eva”, Rays finds himself in a similar situation, but the way he approaches the issue is very different but interesting in a humorous way.

- “Eva is a piece of work, but we're prepared to make it worth your while to take her out. You're gonna pay me to go out with her?”

- When you do it, you have to make her fall in love with you, then you tell her you're leaving town and get her to go with you.

- Then you can dump her. It'll take her years to relocate. - Yes!

- Ray, Ray, look, I gotta be honest with you. Eva is a piece of work, but we're prepared to make it worth your while to take her out. You're gonna pay me to go out with her? Are you worried that that makes you look like a gigolo?  No. I mean, I kind of like that aspect. - Okay! All right. I'm in a financial bind.

In this scene, the husbands of Eva’s sisters are asking Ray to woo Eva. They informed him that he is to occupy her time so that she stays out of the affairs of their lives. They emphasize on the reason of him not getting emotionally attached to her. He refuses on the idea of the plan at first but then accepts after he is bribed with $5,000.

PETRUCHIO:

Marry, so I mean, sweet Katherine, in thy bed.

And therefore, setting all this chat aside,

Thus in plain terms: your father hath consented

That you shall be my wife, your dowry 'greed on,

And, will you, nill you, I will marry you.

Now, Kate, I am a husband for your turn,

For, by this light, whereby I see thy beauty,

Thy beauty that doth make me like thee well,

Thou must be married to no man but me.

For I am he am born to tame you, Kate,

And bring you from a wild Kate to a Kate

Conformable as other household Kates.

This is the scene from the play where Petruchio is attempting to woo Katherine. He lies and tells her things that would makes her feel pleasant inside, though knowing they are all untrue. For example when he says that though everyone denounces her of being called pretty Kate, he believes that she is the prettiest Kate in the world. He then went on to saying that he wants her to be his wife. To his surprise, Kate reacts differently than what he’d expected.

Observing Kate reaction and being in fear of her imminent action, Petruchio does the unbelievable.

Realizing that by beating around the bush and trying to please Katherine in a way is like begging for her love, which is not being dominant, he decides to cut to the chase and tell her the truth. After telling her the truth, he maintains his superiority insisting they get married as soon as possible. He then went on to state,” I’m the man who was born to tame you and change you from a wildcat Kate into a Kate as gentle and domestic as other household Kates.”

In this scene, Ray is put in a particularly similar situation when consoles to telling Eva the plan. But, as Petruchio expresses his dominance in a controlling, less submissive manner, Ray chooses to express his situation in a more calm, passive, approach.

-”Look. I'm sorry, fellas.

I'm going to see Eva tonight, and the least I can do is tell her in person what I did.”

Eva,you don't understand.
-“ It's because of me.The only reason I went out with you...is because they paid me to. I was supposed to... make you like me, then trick you into moving away. But I didn't know you then. I didn't realize how wonderful you are. How much you changed me, make me wanna change.I know I was wrong, but….what we have is bigger than all the mistakes I've made.
 I'm certain of that.”

Showing that by being soft and gentle to the aggressive, you’re not only gaining dominance to their heart but to the person as a whole. This is what Ray does in this scene. He tells Eva the whole plan and in the end apologizes to her.Weakened by his honesty and sympathy, she eventually forgives him and accepts his apology. In turn, she agrees to marry him. DOMINANCE ESTABLISHED.

In conclusion both the film and play shows that though at times women might seem the more dominant in relationships, it is the males who are the superiority leaders. All women need is to be controlled(tame) in order to behave in the proper manner. The main ideas surrounding both is that men and women play different roles in society and even though how crazy it may seem  for men to always want control of women, men will always have that superiority because that’s what they were made to be.

Hello I'm Nevrid and in my presentation is about showing people that no matter how much you think you know someone, that someone will have something you don't know (secrets). My slide is a slide that some of us can relate to. I constructed my slide the way i did because, it shows the things i learned from learning from the websites that i read. It shows the message which is bright and clear and contrasts with the dark background. So readers eyes will immediately be attracted to the message and will be able to get the message quickly. The moon also plays a part on the slide because it shows the meaning of the words and it doesn't take much space on the slide. The message i wrote, also helps me remember what i need to say for the presentation, just by taking a quick glance at it.

I didn't make a lot of changes in my slide because the things my classmates said about my slide were about the font of the slide and the word "hidden". So i changed the color of the word "hidden" into black and i changed the font into more welcoming font.

Lewis' Slide

Hello, I'm Lewis. My goal for my presentation is to make everyone's day a little bit better. I chose my background because I am 100% certain that every student in this room can relate to this picture. We all have times where we feel like our lives are just so bad. But as we grow older, we see that those teenage crisis years/growing up years were actually funny experiences. We all can remember a time where we through a fit over something we thought we wanted bad, now we look back on it and laugh. For example, when I was little I wanted a giraffe. My mom obviously said "no" because it wasn't realistic to have a giraffe living in my closet. For two weeks I cried "give me giraffe"(Lionel). Now I think "what in the world was I thinking asking for a giraffe?". At that time this was a negative in my life. But it has helped me grow into the realistic thinker I am now, which can be looked at as a development in life. So whenever you are feeling down because something bad is going on in your life, just know that it is helping you develops a detailed picture called life.

Tech Presentation (4)

From our presentation and discussion, I learned that the littlest detail matters. It affect how someone look at your work. I learn that my text should match somewhat of what I did. The solid style "Times New Romans" did not work with my floral theme. So I decided to change it up and make it all different but with the feed back of the class. I did the same thing and somewhat the same procedure I did for my first one.

From the websites and video I learn that there needs to be a balance in emptiness and picture or content itself. I made my slide a balance of pictures and emptiness, and I chose those two picture because I think it match well with my quote and also they go together. I made copies of the two pictures and line them up together to create another picture. Also, I made the background pink to show warmth and to keep it simple because the picture looks more married as a whole picture. I really like the idea of emptiness and bleeding off, which had influenced me on how to deal with my pictures, because I think it looks better since it’s not overwhelming, and you can actually pay attention to the quote too. This picture and quote represent me, because it’s nature related which I love, and also it relates well to the quote. To me the quote means, not to look at something and automatically think what you see is what you really see because sometimes your eyes and mind trick you.

Now you might be wondering why are the students creating and uploading all these picture slides. Well in technology class we are creating these slides to describe ourselves. We watched a video and saw websites about things like the Ikea billboard in order to get inspired with making our own picture. From the websites and video I learn that there needs to be a balance in emptiness and picture or content itself. I made my slide a balance of pictures and emptiness, and I chose those two picture because I think it match well with my quote and also they go together. I made the first picture (green tree) bleed out a little bit in order to get a closer look at the whole picture itself. Also, I made the background white to show emptiness and to keep it simple because the two separate picture looks more married as a whole picture. That is why the tree picture has a camouflaging bug or insect that you’ll notice if you look closely enough.

Destiny Preito Q2 Media Fluency

Hi, I'm Destiny Preito and all the things on this slide are things that "shape" me as a person. But thats not what I'm here to talk about today. I'm going to discuss my reasoning for placing and creating things a certain way on my slide. Let's first start off with my background. I chose a white background because it along with black are the biggest contrast colors. And then put vivid and bright colors like hot pink to capture the readers attention when looking at the slide. I also tried the bleeding technique that was talked about in the "Zen Presentation" with the doctor's x-ray picture, because it's pretty obvious what's going to be on the opposite side of that picture. The last tip I got from "Zen Presentation" was the use of bolding letters. I purposely used bolded word on the slide to capture the reader's attention and make it big enough to read. On some aspects of the slide, I even used both bolding and vivid colors of the letters.
Destiny Preito (5)
Well during the class discussion, they said my slide didn't really have a "purpose" so I took one of the aspects of my previous slide and turned it into it's own slide. Which was the whole fashion thing. They also told me my slide was too cluttered so I tried to take some pictures out to create more space.

Q2 Media Fluency

My slide describes that I can't live without music basically saying that i was lost now im found because i have music in my life. When i visited the design slide website I found one thing to be very interesting. The quote said  “ My slides are not designed for people who didn't see the talk in person. They're designed to support my words, not some online audience”. I believe that this information is telling me that you should try to please yourself not everyone else because it only matters what you want to say. This project is about expressing yourself and telling people what makes you, you. The reason i made my slide the way i did is because when I visited the slide design page i found out that the key points are colors that stand out, bold print and less words to get my point across. So I followed these steps to describe myself in this slide.

Media Fluency

During this slide making unit I learned about about contrast, design, color and size. I used these rules to my advantage when creating my slide. For example, I learned that bigger text draws the audience more than medium or small words would on a slide. Another thing I learned was that your should have colors that contrast but they don't have to match all the way.One more thing that I learned is how to space my words on my slide as well as centering them so that it can be more easy for the audience. For my slide my writing was on a slant and some letters were to small and just one color also. I decided to change the color of music and soul to contrast with the galaxy background more so I choose a mustard kind of color and also I centered my words so they can be easy to read and changed the front sized for the words “saved” and “my” to draw the audience in more . Ms.Hull set me to fail because i never done this project before and had no idea how to create a slide the way she described. I was going to make mistakes on this project since it was my first time doing a project like this. During our class discussions I learned more about what could make my project better like making my words a similar size and color so that they not only contrast but stand out in my slide

The one thing that I love more than food is traveling. So that being said I made my slide/billboard display this passion. My visual has hearts in each continent which symbolizes,to fully understand who you are you have to find yourself via traveling. I wanted it to be simple so I tried to use only a few words with a cute simple visual. I have some contrast(the white and red). I also tried to leave empty space, (upper far right and lower far left). I tried to the best of my ability to use rule of thirds by placing them as you can see.  And I made sure that I made my type big and easy to read, and my font design was consistent.  Also my slide has one point and one point only.

Liliana Guercio Q2 Media fluency

Music Madness
This is my slide for our media fluency project I made in technology. I made my project look the way it dose because music means everything to me. I realized in life that music is one of the main things that change your mood. I've been in a situation where I felt like the closest people to me I couldn't talk to but when I found that right song it gave me the best advice "never give up,never let go, never give in." Many different designs influenced me and became an input in this project. First, I used contrast to draw attention and stand out by making it black and white so it is easy to show and easily read. Next, I checked to see if their was negative space by making the quote look nice and is stated nicely so everyone understands it.. Last, I thought about the rule of the thirds so i made sure the picture balanced out with the quote. Those were the design aspects I put consideration into my slide. Thank you for your attention.

Reflection:

I learned that my previous font was hard to read, and didn't fit with the overall design. I also learned that the colors did not contrast well, and my quote was too long. I revised my slide, and tried to make colors and shapes match. To do this I added a green hue over the picture to help distinguish the text. I also used rule of thirds from top to bottom making the text, the kaaba, and the crowd. The white in crowd matched with text as well.

Q2 Media Fluency

This slide was suppose to represent how I am different from the rest of the world, and how I will rise from the group to become something better. For the set up of the slide I made sure that the writing was simple and was very big this would allow people it to be able to read it quickly and remember it. I used contrast between the background and the image of the chameleon. The background has a black background and the chameleon was colorful which made it stand out more. I left a lot of the space in the slide alone because I didn't want to make the slide cluttered. I wanted  this to have a lasting impact on people so I made sure that the text had a lot of meaning. I also used rule of the thirds I left the words in left corner and the picture in the right corner. This allowed balance in the slide.

One Slide About me
One Slide About me (2)
After presenting my slide and hearing some of the ideas my classmates have given for my slide I went and moved the words that were so close from the side because it creates a tangent. I also tried new fonts for the words and decided to change it to the font impact. Then I wanted to incorporate the Ideas of fading in the chameleon and words. So I made the words fade and the chameleons body lose color slowly and fade into the background so it seems as though the chameleon is coming at you and the colors of it start to emerge. After that I enlarged the size of the words and the picture.

Crazy tales of mental cross dressing

The movie “Think Like A Man” campares to “Taming of the Shrew” in many ways when it comes to deceit and the mindset of both genders. In TOTS there are two fair maidens. The youngest sister Bianca is a beautiful woman that all the men want. Her older sister Kate is beautiful also, but since she has a foul mouth and speaks her mind, no man wants her. While men begin to dress as other people to win Bianca, they can’t because her father will not let her marry till Kate is married. A man with his mind on his money makes a deal with the men and tries to win Kate over in a mental battlefield. He tries to make her think he loves her, then turns into a completely different man. In the movie “Think Like A Man” is a tale of 5 different stories with 5 different type of relationships. With 5 types of men and 5 types of women. All 10 battling it out in the battlefield and mental game of love, both use a book of knowledge written by Steve Harvey. The women use it to get inside the mens heads (without the men knowing) to get what they want. The men use the same book (the women don’t know) to make the women believe that they are falling right into their plan when in reality they’re just playing around to get what they want. Love is something shared between two people, but marriage and relationships are all about control.

"Quote from Play"

(Act 2, Scene 1,176-189)

Petruchio: “I will attend her here,

And woo her with some spirit when she comes.

Say that she rail; why then I'll tell her plain

She sings as sweetly as a nightingale:

Say that she frown, I'll say she looks as clear

As morning roses newly wash'd with dew:

Say she be mute and will not speak a word;

Then I'll commend her volubility,

And say she uttereth piercing eloquence:

If she do bid me pack, I'll give her thanks,

As though she bid me stay by her a week:

If she deny to wed, I'll crave the day

When I shall ask the banns and when be married.

But here she comes; and now, Petruchio, speak.”

This is Petruchio talking to himself about what he is going to say to Kate. He is giving himself a peptalk on how he is going to woo her under his control and make her think he loves her.

Dreamer + Rich woman
Dreamer + Rich woman

This is “The Dreamer”. He is going for “The woman who is her own man”. Being a “dreamer” he knows that he really doesn’t have enough money to meet her standards. So he uses the car to give her the idea that he is rich to catch her interest and then reel her in.  This connects to TOTS because one of the main characters, Lucentio, dresses up as a teacher to get close to Bianca. Since her father wants Kate to marry first, he is keeping all suitors away from Bianca except for her teachers.

(Act 4, Scene 3, 41-53)

Katherina. Young budding virgin, fair and fresh and sweet,

Whither away, or where is thy abode? 2305

Happy the parents of so fair a child;

Happier the man whom favourable stars

Allots thee for his lovely bed-fellow.

Petruchio. Why, how now, Kate, I hope thou art not mad!

This is a man, old, wrinkled, faded, withered, 2310

And not a maiden, as thou sayst he is.

Katherina. Pardon, old father, my mistaking eyes,

That have been so bedazzled with the sun

That everything I look on seemeth green;

Now I perceive thou art a reverend father.

Pardon, I pray thee, for my mad mistaking.

This shows kate losing the mental game that her and petruchio are both playing. She decides to submit to him.

the-cast-of-think-like-a-man
the-cast-of-think-like-a-man

In this picture, it displays the friends of the Dreamer and The Woman who is her own man. In the end of the movie, she realizes that love is not a game and she doesn’t want the money or fame. The dreamer ended up getting busted and the relationship was rocky. Even though he was not rich, he tried his best to make it seem like he had all the luxurious things. In the end, the “Woman who is her own man” came to him in the end and submitted saying that she doesn’t want all these luxurious things, she just wants him. She’s letting him be the man and be in control of their relationship. They just witnessed it and are surprised that she changed her mind.

Biondello: Why, Petruchio is coming- in a new hat and an old 1405

jerkin; a pair of old breeches thrice turn'd; a pair of boots

that have been candle-cases, one buckled, another lac'd; an old

rusty sword ta'en out of the town armoury, with a broken hilt,

and chapeless; with two broken points; his horse hipp'd, with an

old motley saddle and stirrups of no kindred; besides, possess'd 1410

with the glanders and like to mose in the chine, troubled with

the lampass, infected with the fashions, full of windgalls, sped

with spavins, rayed with the yellows, past cure of the fives,

stark spoil'd with the staggers, begnawn with the bots, sway'd in

the back and shoulder-shotten, near-legg'd before, and with a 1415

half-cheek'd bit, and a head-stall of sheep's leather which,

being restrained to keep him from stumbling, hath been often

burst, and now repaired with knots; one girth six times piec'd,

and a woman's crupper of velure, which hath two letters for her

name fairly set down in studs, and here and there piec'd with 1420

pack-thread.

This is Biondello talking about Petruchio arriving at the wedding in an unexpected fashion. This relates back to the thesis because he’s doing this to make Kate think one way but in reality, he’s only doing this to gain more control. Basically telling Kate that he can do what ever he want after she thought that he was going to be a good husband.
Megan Good
Megan Good

In this picture, Megan Good plays a girl who always sleeps with the guys who don’t want to be in a commited relationship. In this picture she is buying a book. She uses it to think like a man. Making her boyfriend think that she isn’t aware of his games. But then he ends up using the book to trick her into making her think that he doesn’t know what she is doing as he follows along.

Both the book and the play show the mindsets of the natures of relationships that even relate to today. In the battlefield of love is a major struggle of power between the male and the female and the deceitful tactics are just used to get into each others heads. When it comes to love movies and stories, pay attention closely and there will always be a leading role whether it is male or female and there will always be a mental reign.

Shrew vs. The Wedding Planner

Romantic Love / Love at First Sight Alyssa Winner

“Taming of the the Shrew” to “The Wedding Planner”

The book “The Taming of the Shrew” shows, how love at first sight is possible and does occur in both the book and in the movie, “The Wedding Planner. In Shrew by Shakespeare, a character name Baptista who is the father of Katherine and Bianca has different expectations on having a relationship with his daughters. In the 2001 movie “The Wedding Planner”, the two characters Mary Flore & Steve Edison fall in love at first sight when Mary is in a rush and her heal gets caught and she almost gets hit by a dumpster but Steve saves her, and later takes her to the hospital he works at. It is obvious that there is some love connection between them but it turns out, Mary, a wedding planner turns out the be planning Steve and his fiancee’s (Fran) wedding. Love at first sight shows up in the book and also the movie but there are different ways it appears.

Although the film and the book aren’t directly related, they share many of the same qualities. Mary and Steve meet in an awkward situation but right away, it is obvious to the viewers that there is a love connection boiling. In The Shrew, Lucentio who is acting as Cambio to win Bianca over. It is a tough situation because he is lying about who he is to her so she will never know what he is truly about unless he tells her which is unlikely to happen. On the flip side, Steve is doing the same thing by not telling her the he is engaged to another women. This is another bump in the road because he is leading Mary on when the truth is she has no idea what is actually happening. In the book one of the characters says, “I see a woman may be made a fool. if she had not a spirit to resist.” This is saying that since a woman can’t resist the man they are in love with then that will make them a fool. Being in love like that turns them into a fool because there is really no other choice. Everything they say or do goes back to the man they are in love with. Not only does that occur in the book, but it also occurs in the movie. Steve and Mary meet in that weird situation, but from there she is in love. In the snapshot below from the movie, Steve is laying on top of Mary right after he saves her and right before she passes out in his arms. Mary has always been the type to keep away from men and just remain focused on her career, but when Steve saves her in this extremely romantic way it is tough to stay on track and not get lost in the fantasy of love. As you can see, although these scenes don’t match up 100 percent, they are very similar and shows how long love has been a pressing issue in the lives of so many.

In another instance, Mary meets up with Fran at a dancing lesson in preparation for Fran’s wedding but of course things don’t go according to plan when Mary find out that the man she is in love with is also her new gigs fiancee (which is shown in the snapshot below). Similar to the Shrew when Tranio finds a random old man and tricks him into pretending he is Lucentio’s father so that he could take care of some things before Lucentio could marry Bianca. That is until they run into problems when Lucentio’s real father, Vincentio appears in the picture. Both the book and the movie show why it is hard to lie about who you are and the people you are involved with because it indeed in a small world and no matter what precautions you may go through to hide the truth there is always a hole in the fence that will show your true colors. Both Lucentio and Mary were doing everything they could to be with the love of their life but ultimately who knows if it would be worth it or not. In Act 2 Scene 1 of the Shrew, Petruchio is going on a rant about Kate and how they are happy together. He says “If she and I be pleased, what's that to you?” He is trying to say that since they are happy, people need to back off and let them be. During the same scene previously discussed from The Wedding Planner, if Fran would have known about Mary and Steve’s little lingering love affair she would have said the same thing Petruchio said. In both of these stories, there is some jealousy and fear of losing their lovers although they are presented and shown in very different ways.

In conclusion, the movie ended the way the fans wanted, with Mary and Steve being together. It was expected through the whole movie, even through all of the setbacks. The strong love connection shined through and everyone, even Fran ended up happy. On the other hand, in The Taming of the Shrew, Kate says a long speech at her wedding and says many things obtaining to her husband and how he should be treated and how every man should be treated that way. It was unclear whether she was saying those things to make her husband happy or if she actually meant them Overall the movie and the play are extremely similar and have close endings although the characters and their love connections can be drastically different.

Confessions of Taming The Shrew

Honesty and deception in relationships

By Sophia De Oliveira

Fire Stream

Movie: Confessions of a Shopaholic

In Shakespeare's written play, “The Taming of The Shrew”, I examined it a bit more and found that it very relative to one’s life today. The Mighty Petruchio  was so out to get Katherine, which was perfect because everyone else wanted Bianca. Everyone had dressed up, pretending to be someone else, or rather, pretending to love someone just for the fortune in the play. Just like in the 2009 movie “Confessions of a Shopaholic”, the main character seeks after all the clothes & shoes she can get her hands on, and pretends to be someone she is not. In both movies, It is evident that in one’s relationship, it can be more deception than expected, and can affect two people’s view on one another, so honesty & communication is key.

Each movie and situation is different, but can be connected in many ways. Lucentio and Hortensio dress up to be someone they are not, just so they can win the heart of Bianca. They work to be as close to her as possible, Lucentio dressing up as her Latin Teacher, Hortensio as the Music teacher, and Tranio as Lucentio. They are all suitors of Bianca, and each of them are determined to woo Bianca. In the movie “Confessions of a Shopaholic”, Rebecca Bloomwood is actually a Shopaholic that is drowning in debt. When her closet is filled with all the Gucci bags, Prada shoes, and Chanel coats you can dream of, her mind is crammed with all the overdue bills she is supposed to be paying off. When she goes shopping for a new dress for an interview to get a job at Elitte (a really high-class fancy shmancy Fashion Magazine she has been wanting to work for ever since she was 14), she ends up being denied, and gets another interview at a finance company. This is extremely ironic for her because she isn’t very good with managing money, however, she ace’s the interview and gets a job as a Journalist for a column in the Finance Magazine. Her friend Suze makes a point of how she needs to take her own advice that she metaphorically compares and contrast to fashion in the column, so that she can become debt-free. Rebecca also tells Suze her plan of winning another job at the Elitte magazine industry, since the Financial company she works for now is somewhat owned by Elitte, and she is willing to do anything to work there.

QUOTE:

One rich enough to be Petruchio’s wife—

As wealth is burden of my wooing dance—

Be she as foul as was Florentius’ love,

As old as Sibyl, and as curst and shrewd

As Socrates’ Xanthippe or a worse,

She moves me not—or not removes at least

Affection’s edge in me, were she as rough

As are the swelling Adriatic seas.

I come to wive it wealthily in Padua;

If wealthily, then happily in Padua.

(65-73)

Here Petruchio describes his ideal wife-a rich woman, who is able to provide a large dowry for himself in the near future. He does not care how rude, stubborn, or upright blunt she is, he is just in it for the riches. He also mentions no matter how wild she is, he is more than able to tame her through the “loving kindness he is determined to woo her with”.

Miss Rebecca felt the same way-just a different message, along with a different approach.

In this scene, Rebecca rushed to the hotdog stand to get cash back, in order to pay for a “magical green scarf” for her interview, that she was unable to pay for with her expired cards. She hurries to the front of the line, cutting in front of everyone, and even pushes her future boss (the guy right next to her in the suit) to get what she needed. This green scarf that she is rushing to get is actually another statement piece a manikin figuratively convinced her to get for this interview, so that she would be later known as “The Girl in the Green Scarf”. Getting this scarf would guarantee her spot in the Elitte magazine industry. Like Petruchio, Rebecca is willing to do anything to get this position, and go through great extent to get it. She will even lie to herself and the hotdog man that this scarf she "needs", is for her great aunt who is very ill.

QUOTE:

My mind hath been as big as one of yours,

My heart as great, my reason haply more,

To bandy word for word and frown for frown;

But now I see our lances are but straws,

Our strength as weak, our weakness past compare,

That seeming to be most which we indeed least are.

Then vail your stomachs, for it is no boot,

And place your hands below your husband’s foot,

In token of which duty, if he please,

My hand is ready, may it do him ease.

  (V.ii.140183)

In this scene, Petruchio tells Lucentio to watch as Katherine comes with obedience to him when he calls for her. When she comes, Petruchio already predicted that she will drag Bianca along with her, degrading her behavior towards her husband by not obeying his orders of coming to him. Her persuasive words that she speaks to all of the wives and everyone else in the audience was touching, especially to Petruchio. She explained as to why obeying your husband shows respect towards him, but also there is “too little payment for so great a debt” that is to be payed towards the husband. She shows that she has been somewhat “tamed” by the great Petruchio, and she no longer is the defiant, obstinate, Katherine everyone was very familiar with in the beginning of the play.

In this part of the movie, Rebecca is walking down the street, past all the beautiful windows of New York with the most beautiful clothing, that she realizes that she doesn’t need. Once again, she was almost tempted by another Manikin that those red sparkly heels were going to go with that green dress she has been dying to wear. However, after selling a large amount of her clothes, hats, shoes, bags, and jewelry to pay for all of her overdue bills, she realizes she doesn’t want to ever feel that way again. She wanted to have control. When Luke stated “What about Honesty? What about credibility?” when he found about who the crazy boyfriend she accused her debt collector to be, she realized something was to happen so she can make everything right again. She persuaded herself at that window that those shiny things aren’t necessary for life, and she go on without them. She broke her old habit of buying, and became a new person. She “tamed” her passion of spending money she doesn’t have. As she walks down the street, the Manikins applaud her for making the right decision, and she later walks into the love of her life, Luke, ending the movie in a romantic kiss.

Hello everyone! Here is my “All about me!” slide. As you can see I put a picture on my slide. I did this because I was trying out the rule of the third I have the picture on one corner and my quote on the other I did this to make a more balanced look to my slide and not make it look all cluttered. Another rule of making an advertisement interesting and eye catching was trying to add contrast to the slide this is shown by the purple background and  teal/ Tiffany blue lettering. By doing this I able to have the slide have popping color and look interesting.

Some other very simple design ideas for the slide that I tried to show was making that the size, color, balance, and contrast to work together. What influenced me to make the slide the way it is because I knew I wanted to incorporate swimming and I knew I wanted to make it eye catching. So by knowing what I wanted to do I made sure I had an interesting background and fun colors. When I first did this project I had black background but I thought it didn't show enough color and wasn't suiting what I was trying to show.

Although I did use presentation zen I also use a website called spoonfed design and they said in your advertisement should show not tell they said do this by making it more visual and not tons of words; I tried that out. They also said, make sure you stand out and memorable I did this by the great quote. Thank you for listening and again here is my “All about me” slide.

Strings Attached

“The Taming of the Shrew” “No Strings Attached”

In the play “The Taming of the Shrew” Petruchio, one of the main characters, is trying to win over Katherine, a stubborn, misunderstood woman who has no intentions on marrying him, yet he continues to try to pursue her and control her through “love” and “kindness”. This is similar to the modern day movie called “No Strings Attached”. This movie shows a sort of switched analogy with instead of the girl wanting to settle down and commit, the guy wants to, such as in “The Taming of the Shrew”.  Through both the “Taming of the Shrew” and “No Strings Attached”, love can be based off of perspective and not necessarily the sex stereotype of a woman always wanting a man.

In the movie, “No Strings Attached”, Emma and Adam are lifelong friends who never really managed to keep in touch with each other, only speaking to each other when they run into one another occasionally during their adulthood. Until one day Adam finds out that his girlfriend has left him for his dad. Out of deviation, Adam goes to a bar, gets drunk and begins to text all the girls in his phone. The next morning he finds himself at Emma’s house with no clothes on. Assuming that he had sex, Emma explains that he came to her house, undressed himself and then went to sleep. As Emma escorts him to the next room to get his clothes, they end up having sex. When they have sex again, they make an agreement to keep their relationship “causal”. Adam obviously thinks that Emma will fall in love first, assuming that she can’t just have sex without gaining any feelings since women are more likely to gain feelings faster through things like this. She commits to the decision that she won’t and so they agree that they will keep this up with no strings attached.

Women are made to bare children and so are you.” - Petruchio Act 2, Sc.1,

In the following quote, Petruchio is trying to win over Kate. In doing so, he says the following pick up line to show his attraction for Kate. He wants to get Kate amused by telling her all the opportunities she can have with him including the sexually opportunities. He thinks that if he tries to “woo” her with sexually lines, that she will see him as sweet and take the bait, since she is a woman and women tend to get softened up much quicker than guys do when put in the same predicament. Though Kate fails to fall for it and commits to not wanting a man and feels as though he’s just another guy that wants a woman to slave by him. Just as Emma, in No Strings Attached, relationships tend her make her uncomfortable and she feels as though she doesn’t need a man to make her happy or to fulfill her life. She’s content with the way her life is and finds Adam to be just another distraction in her life that she has to commit to.

Screen Shot 2013-12-09 at 2.39.56 PM
Screen Shot 2013-12-09 at 2.39.56 PM

In the picture, Emma explains to Adam that she’s not really into relationships and that she would rather continue having sex instead of trying to pursue to the next level. Making commitments and having relationships tend to ruin things and don’t always go the way they’re planned. During and after the conversation, Adam still believes that it’s impossible to keep up with this “causal” relationship, though he tells her that he will back off with trying to date her, yet at the same time, he continues to try to win her over as a boyfriend, subconsciously and when asked about if he’s trying to date her, he continues to deny it. Petruchio and Adam both want to have a woman by their side, yet they don’t understand why it’s taking so long and why it’s so hard to win both women over. They both had the mindset that sweetness and the thought of having a man by the women’s side would surely have the women in their arms by now, but they learn that it’s much harder than they thought but don’t show a drop of sweat.

“‘Moved’, in good time! Let him that moved you hither remove you hence. I knew you at the first you were a moveable.” - Katherine pg. 89 Act 2 Sc. 1

Kate fails to be impressed with the way the Petruchio tries to compliment her and win her over. She feels that she’s only wanted by him because everyone wants her sister. She sees him as every other guy that just uses her to get to her sister. Kate remains to be content with being without a man and refuses to be anyone’s wife. She just doesn’t see Petruchio as any different from every other guy that wants her to quickly marry, to get her out of the way, so that they can get to Bianca instead. Unlike Petruchio, Adam sees Emma for who she is and wants to be with her for who she is.

Screen Shot 2013-12-09 at 4.04.48 PM
Screen Shot 2013-12-09 at 4.04.48 PM

In this picture, Emma realizes that she actually does have really strong feelings for Adam. She finds that when she’s with him, she’s happier and a better person. She says that all this time she has been denying the way she feels because she was afraid to feel the way she felt, which was love. Emma finally understands that love isn’t meant to be easy and she doesn’t mind trying the new relationship Adam. Just as Emma, Kate found herself falling for Petruchio a little too. With the little things he did, she found them to be how she always wanted to be treated. Everyone saw her as mean and cruel and just misunderstood but Petruchio saw the beauty in her, even if it wasn’t real, the little things made her day and broke her out of her shell more and more.

In conclusion, both Emma and Kate decide to step out of their comfort zone and try something they never thought they would try, being in a relationship. At first they saw relationships as trouble and not worth the time, but once they began to understand Adam and Petruchio, they realized that these two men may be for real. Along with the women having their realization, they men had theirs too. That getting the girl isn’t always easy like they planned. They both just wanted the women just because but as time went on, they found themselves falling for them just as hard. In the end, The Taming of the Shrew and No Strings Attached display how love can play a role in a part that most of us never imagined.

Daddy's Little Girls

The culture of marital engagement in “Taming of the Shrew”, and the era Shakespeare wrote this play, was that if a man was interested in a woman, he would just go straight to her father and the “business transaction would be made. Since Baptista had two daughters, Katherine and Bianca, he had many suitors at his front door. He would situate and pick them by the amount of deeds they had and his daughter was handed over. However in the movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”, set in modern times, the culture is much different. Toula Portokalos is a 30 year old greek girl who works at her family’s restaurant and still lives at home with her parents. She didn’t have any Greek Suitors at her door like her family imagined her to have nor did she meet any guys who were interested in her. Until Ian came around. Ian and Toula are deeply in love, so, it would assume that this was her soulmate. False. Ian isn’t Greek, which is a problem of great magnitude for Toula’s family, especially her father. These texts reflect not only has there been a change in culture, but also, a clash between cultures within eras when it comes to kindling a new romance.

Quote 1: “You’re welcome, sir, and he for your good sake. But for my daughter Katherine, this I know, She is not for your turn, the more my grief.” - Baptista Act 2 scene 1

In this quote, Baptista is confused by the fact there is final a suitor, a man named Petruchio, for his ill-fitted daughter Katherine. He was certain that his daughter wouldn’t get a suitor by how bitter and mean she was. When Petruchio, asked for Katherine’s hand, this was Baptista’s warning to not marry his daughter.
Screen Shot 2013-12-06 at 11.08.16 AM
Screen Shot 2013-12-06 at 11.08.16 AM

In the first scene of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Gus, Toula’s father, shakes his head in shame because Toula won’t get married to anyone, let alone a Greek. As she takes a deep yawn, he looks to his coke-bottle glasses wearing daughter and tells her “You better get married soon. You starting to look old.” Toula knows that her only purpose in life, as a Greek girl, is to do 3 things in life: marry a greek boy, make greek babies, and feed everyone until the day they die.

Quote 2: “Truly, gentlemen, this is a chancy piece of business. I’ve made a risky investment.” - Baptista Act 2, Scene 1

Once the engagement of Petruchio and Katherine was confirmed, the men of the city, including Baptista, reflected on how the transaction happened. In addition to that, the wedding was in 3 days making this a very fast transaction that usually takes much more time. Baptista understands the risks of this but knows that he is making the right decision on giving away Katherine.

Screen Shot 2013-12-06 at 12.49.19 AM
Screen Shot 2013-12-06 at 12.49.19 AM

Gus doesn’t feel as confident in Toula as Baptista did in Katherine. When Toula got in a relationship with Ian, she knew that since Ian wasn’t Greek, her family would not approve. She hid her relationship with Ian from her family as long as she could until a 3rd cousin of hers saw her and Ian making out in a Denny’s parking lot and decided to tell her mom who decided to tell Toula’s first cousin’s mom who told Toula’s mom. When Gus heard of this he was infuriated especially because Ian came to the house to ask Gus for Toula’s hand in marriage. During this dialogue, Ian tells Gus that Toula is 30 she should be able to make decisions on her own. Gus tells him “I am the head of this house...you may not date me daughter!” He then later tells Toula and her mom that it was to big of a risk to let Toula go to school and he went against his gut causing for his daughter to be involved in a relationship with a man who isn’t Greek.

In the end, Toula and Ian decided to push through this obstacle and stay together. They decided to get married and at the wedding, Gus gives Ian and Toula the deed to a house he bought for them. As kind as this gesture was, he didn’t let them get away because he bought the house next door to them to make sure he was involved in everything they did. In “The Taming of the Shrew”, the risk Baptista took to marry Katherine to Petruchio didn’t end up as well as Katherine imagined due to the fact that Petruchio would starve her and bother her. But as strong as Katherine was she pushed through and stayed by her man. Even though these two stories were far in time and era, there are many similarities when it comes parental inferences in their child’s romantic relationships.
