Grilled Cheese Circuit & Artist Statement

For our project, we decided to create a grilled cheese sandwich, with light up chesse. We decided to conduct this because both of us like food and cheese very much. Grilled cheese is one of the simplest meals with food and it is recognizable by mostly everybody. The Grilled Cheese sculpture is a way for us to represent  that we are indeed still kids at heart, that are in love with food.

Christmas Cane :D Jermel (&) Keyaira



For our project we decided to create a beautiful sculpture out of a christmas cane. Jermel and I both love christmas, it is our favorite holiday of the year and because we heard that we would be using christmas lights to decorate and light up a sculpture what better way would there be than to decorate a christmas cane.


We used a 9 volt battery, 12 lights, and 2 Wires. We decided that it would be best to make a 3 branch series of 4 bulbs in each branch, and put our switch at the top of our candy cane that way when you held the top of the candy cane you also hold the switch down to activate the candy cane.

Iron Man Teddie

Stuffed animals are a large part of almost every childhood. They are our first friends, and our most trustworthy confidants. They protect from the dark and saved us from the boogie monsters under our beds. 

We thought it would be cute and appropriate to make a Teddy bear light-up like Iron Man, the super hero. 

The teddy bear we created has a red light on his chest and a light on each hand. The red light turns on and off as you put on and remove the helmet. The white lights can be turned off by disconnecting the two wires under the tail.

Acceptable Use Policy

Science Leadership Academy values of technology and encourages its use in creative ways to support student learning in a safe and secure learning environment. This policy is a guide to ensuring the appropriate use as well as safety for all community members. While these technologies provide powerful learning opportunities, they must be used responsibly.

These rules apply to any electronic device including laptops, mobile phones, MP3 players, gaming devices, digital cameras, any and all devices that are connected to the School District of Philadelphia network. Learning always takes priority while using SLA's wireless and hardwired internet connections.

Tresspassing

  • Do not touch another personʼs laptop/device unless invited by the owner
  • Do not play with, use, or change another personʼs user account
  • Do not access another personʼs files or resources
  • Only access areas of the network you have been given permission to access

No Fooling Around

  • Do not load any game, video or music file on your machine that is not paid for or have the rights to use by you.
  • Do not play games at school, unless sanctioned and agreed to by staff and parents
  • Do not access inappropriate websites (obscene, violent etc) on your laptop
  • Do not chat online or play music/videos unless given permission by your teacher
  • Leave mobile phones turned off or in silent mode in your bags/pockets unless their use is sanctioned by a teacher for a learning activity or listening to music during independent work
  • Do not post or send any message/picture/sound/video that is obscene, rude, harassing or insulting to anyone
  • Do not attack, threaten or intimidate another student via technology (or otherwise)
  • Do not take pictures or post pictures of others without asking their permission

No Hogging

  • Do not take up bandwidth by downloading movies, music, pictures, or by playing online games not directly connected to your learning
  • Do not store music, movies, pictures or files on the school network not connected to your learning - all personal files must be saved on an external hard drive
  • No Stealing

    • Do not download any illegal materials (e.g. cracked software, pirated music or movies, or any copyrighted materials) or intellectual property that was not purchased by you or that you do not have the rights to use
    • Peer to peer file sharing is strictly prohibited and monitored by the School District of Philadelphia - these software programs can be detected by the District and they will shut off your access to the SDP Network
    • Do not plagiarize i.e. present anybody elseʼs work as your own - for more information see SLAʼs academic integrity policy
    • No spamming, hacking, hawking, or trolling
    • Do not forward or send any content not directly associated with your learning (e.g. advertisements, games, pictures)
    • Do not deliberately or negligently spread viruses, malware, or spyware
    • Do not attempt to access any areas of the school network, or other peoplesʼ devices you do not have permission to visit
    • Do not run a business or seek to make profit using the school network

    Guidelines

    • Science Leadership Academy and The School District of Philadelphia will monitor user data and internet access and check the contents of any electronic device brought onto the schoolʼs premises or on any official school event
    • Educational use of the network and computer resources takes precedence over non- educational use including games not related to classwork
    • This statement covers (but is not limited to) the use of electronic devices owned by the school and by students that are brought onto schoolʼs premises, or on excursions, camps or other official school functions - including computers, laptops, digital video and music players, cameras, other recording devices, mobile phones and organizers
    • Science Leadership Academy reserves the right to ensure all student laptops have sufficient space to support learning activities. This may include the school need to deleting non-essential games, music and video files.

    Laptop Audits

    • Audits of student laptops can be done by any staff member at anytime.

    Sanctions

      Sanctions for violations stated above may include the following measures:

    • Confiscation of the device for a defined period
    • Withdrawal of privileges including on-line access for breaches of on-line policy
    • Withdrawal of the right to bring or use electronic devices to Science Leadership Academy
    • Blockage from the network of any and all devices downloading illegal files such as music, video and photographs
    • Community work for the Science Leadership Academy outside school hours
    • Payment for cost of repairs

    Serious Breaches of Rules

    • All incidences will be handled on a student by student basis
    • Suspension or expulsion
    • Law enforcement agencies may be involved
    • Simple finder will be installed on your computer this which limits the applications on your laptop to strictly educational use
    • The laptops are the School District of Philadelphiaʼs property. We strongly encourage that the insurance is paid for each year the laptop is in the hands of a student. That way if there is any major damage families are only liable for the $100 deductible. Any damage caused by the user starts with the $100 deductible.

    Responsibility

    • Keep the computer in a safe clean place
    • Notify SLA if the user changes residence at any point during the time they possess the laptop
    • Provide SLA and Officer Byrd with a police report in the event of fire or theft of the laptop
    • Keep the laptop in a PADDED backpack

    Administration of Computers

    All users will be granted with the power to change the settings within the computer. That way updates to software can be made and peripherals can be hooked up to the laptop with ease. The user may not change password settings or computer name settings, these are uniform to the school and are necessary for the maintenance and upkeep of the laptop.

    File Storage

    No personal files should be kept on the laptop, these must be saved to an external drive - this includes all music files and photographs, SLA is not responsible for any lost files school or personal

    A two gigabyte storage space will be provided for students to keep all school related files safe - ALL FILES MUST BE SAVED TO THE DROPBOX ACCOUNT - further instruction on doing so will be given in the technology course during the first week of school

    Students are responsible for maintaining current backups of all their own schoolwork either online through Dropbox or their own backup solution. You will be expected to turn in your work on time even in the event that your laptop fails - the Technology Team team cannot recover your files

    Network - Connecting to the Internet

    The entire school is covered by a high-speed wireless internet network. All students will be able to access the internet, as long as they follow this policy. With this connection comes a degree of risk, this policy is made to help users avoid these risks, keep our community safe and abide by internet laws.

    Email

    Users will have access to an email account the four years they are at SLA. You may use this to communicate with parents, teachers, friends, experts and fellow students around the globe. An email address with the suffix @scienceleadership.org will be provided to all students. This address is to be used for all school-related business. Your private account should be used for all other communications. Users will have access to their other email accounts during “off” times during school, like lunch and free periods.

    Email/Chatting Etiquette

    Communicating online is is very much like communicating with people in person. You must be respectful of others at all times. Remember that all email & M.O.O.D.L.E. messages can be read by the SLA Technology Team and the administration. Donʼt write anything you would not want to share with teachers and parents.

    While many members of SLA, including staff members, use instant messaging and blogging software to communicate, part of the learning experience at SLA is to responsibly use these types of communication methods as part of your school day. Students need to be aware that chatting during class time when off topic is a distraction. Students asked to refrain from using or quit using chatting during class time must do so immediately.

    Publishing or Uploading to the Web

    In some cases your classwork will be published or students will be asked to hand in assignments that are published. Having work published means the world can see what you have uploaded. This is a great opportunity for students as well as people not directly involved with SLA; it provides you and other students a chance to share your work and have it viewed. People curious about SLA will be visiting our web portal to see what goes on daily.

    The SLA Technology Office is located in room 306, and staffed by our Systems Administrator Chris Alfano. In addition SLAʼs Technology Coordinator is Marcie T. Hull, who can be found in room 301.

    Insurance Policy

    SLA's Technology Team team will determine what type of repair a laptop is eligible for and be responsible for carrying out and administering the repair.

    School District Insurance - in short

    We strongly encourage the purchase of insurance available though the School District of Philadelphia for student laptop computers, the cost is $75.00.

    • Damage caused by the user is not covered by insurance.
    • Physical damage to the casing caused to chargers is not covered by insurance.
    • Batteries are not covered by insurance
    • All damage is subject to a $100.00 deductible.

    F.A.Q's

    What do I owe up front? The money for the insurance is due at the beginning of each school year. The deductible ($100.00) must be paid when damage occurs and the user brings the laptop in for a repair that is not covered by insurance. Users will not get the laptop back until the repair bill is paid in full. Payment plans can be set up for your convenience.

    What not covered by the insurance? Batteries that can not keep a charge are not covered and chargers that have physical damage to the casing. Who pays for parts that are not covered by the insurance? In the event that a battery goes bad or the charger suffers physical damage by the user then the user or their guardian must pay in full for the parts that are broken or missing.

    Who makes the decisions about what is covered under the insurance? The coverage under this policy is dictated to us by Apple. For example, Apple considers batteries and chargers to be replaceable parts, and they are therefore not covered by insurance. SLA does not have the budget to replace these items. Therefore, should there be a problem with a battery, or a problem with a charger due to physical damage, it is the studentʼs responsibility to pay for a replacement.

    Artist Statement:
    I chose to create silver reef wire at a sudden vision, and in-the-moment need. I had to construct this. The joy, the season, the year, the course, all molded into one metallic structure. Silver, for metal, metal, for physics and science. Wire for circuits, for, conductivity, an auspice to the transferring of current. A reef, a common shape and symbol of Western ornament domination, and token of holiday indulgence. Built to last forever, in your heart, and in your christmas bin.

    Physics Sculpture: James Prell, Jhonas Dunakin

    ​Artists Statement:

    Our sculpture was designed to be functional and visual. The eyes are drawn to the lights around the wheel as they light up and turn. The sculpture only reaches its true potential while the unicycle is being riden.

    On the circuitry side, the bulbs are wired into several branches with two bulbs in a series each. This allows for the same voltage through each branch and an even distribution of brightness as the bulbs are slightly dimmer in each branch of the circuit.

    1990's Music Project (:

    We decided to do our project about music because we felt like everyone can connect with music. We took music from 1990's. During the 1990's everyone was into bright colors, sticking out and being unique, therefore we made our project purple and red with a blue light bulb. 
    Taylor and I are very similar so it was very easy for us to make this project. We really liked designing this project because it was a reflection of our personalities, what we like to do, what our childhood was like. Our project really turned out very well for what we imagined.

    When we first got our project we thought about music and decided that we wanted our sculpture to represent something that had to do with the music we like/love. We wanted to try and make the circuit and the sculpture different and unique by making the lights go on and off from the Cd we choose doing its normal gestures. The CD represents us well because we both like music a lot.

    Zaria Linton Artist Statement

    I came up with the idea of lighting up a note book cover because writing is something that I enjoy doing, and when I’m older, I plan on becoming a writer. When it came to the color scheme, I just choose colors that fit who I am. I didn’t want to over work myself by choosing so many lights, so I chose to work with 6 and they are in a parallel series.

    MCard KMoody Physics Benchmark

    For our physics project me and keith used the american flag. We decided to use 8 light bulbs but to get to this number took some time, because we wanted to originally use 23 light bulbs but we were told that, that would be to many light bulbs. Next we thought about using 16 light bulbs and that was still thought to be too many light bulbs so then we finally got down to a grand total of using 8 light bulbs. After we got the amount of light bulbs we used we were trying to figure out how we were going to align the light bulbs to where they would light up but also look nice, neat and organized as well. Then we chose the colors for our light bulbs and since we did the american flag we chose the colors red, white and blue.

    A sugar skull is a traditional Mexican mask and candy that is most prominently made during the day of the dead celebration. The candy version of sugar skulls are used to adorn alters and can be eaten. I came up with the design for my mask by vigorously researching traditional sugar skull designs. The design I used on my mask is slightly different from the design I initially sketched. I changed the design for the mask because all the extra details in my sketch would not have fit on it.

    When I began this project, my first step was to sketch a design for my mask. Then, I molded the plaster to the face of my classmate Wynn. After this I allowed the mask time to dry and harden. Once the mask was dry, I painted only the black outlines on it. After that was dry, I painted in the colored sections. To finish off the mask I put a coat of clear gloss on it to give it a shiny exterior.

    This is  and image of a shoe that I made light up by creating a circuit inside of it.I choose to do a shoe because shoes are things that help me to get around each day. Also shoes will help me walk to my success.

    Childhood Obesity

    Children in America are becoming fat. “Childhood obesity is best tackled at home through improved parental involvement, increased physical exercise, better diet and restraint from eating.”  33 percent of children and teens are currently obese.  Obesity is among the easiest medical conditions to recognize but most difficult to treat.  Parents feed their children technically twice a day. They feed them breakfast and dinner, but even though they are not there during the school day, (they can control what their child is eating in between the time.) What they can't control are the snacks they eat while they're not in their parents supervision. Unhealthy weight gain due to poor diet and lack of exercise is responsible for over 300,000 deaths each year.The reason most children in America are becoming obese is either because they are following in their parents footsteps or they have no control of the food they are eating.Excess weight and obesity in childhood and adolescence has become a serious public health concern in the United States.  Most  of a child’s diet is controlled by the parents, parents should be held responsible for childhood obesity.




    Obesity is one of the easiest thing to realize but the most difficult thing to change.Obesity is an excess proportion of total body fat. A person is considered obese when his or her weight is 20% or more above normal weight. The most common measure of obesity is the body mass index or BMI.Obesity occurs when a person consumes more calories than he or she burns.Obesity occurs when a person consumes more calories than he or she burns. What doesn’t help it is the inactivity.

    As mentioned on OECD the percentage of child obesity has increased 15% over the last 2 years. Two type of diabetes has doubled over the years also. 25% of children ages 8-16 watch four or more hours  of television a day. Having  obese parents substantially raises a child's risk of becoming obese.Implications for the life expectancy of obese youth who are likely to experience higher rates of hypertension, elevated cholesterol, and Type 2 diabetes than their parents. Past studies have shown childhood obesity to be more strongly associated with mother’s weight than father’s weight.To find out the effects of maternal and paternal weight on obesity risk in children researchers reviewed 4,432 UK families and 7,078 children, aged between 2 and 15 years.In America children are allowed to go in fast food places without a parent,compared to the UK  who decided create a law that children are not allowed inside of Mc’Donalds without a parent.Parents are then able to decide what they would like there child to eat and moniter what there child is eating.Other laws were based off of this.For example Mc’Donalds now has to give you apples with every happy meal. This is a good way to help maintain childrens weight and diet because while eating a fatty unhealthy meal they are still receiving some type of nutrition.

    Weight loss is not a good approach for most young children, since their bodies are growing and developing. A restrictive diet may not supply the energy and nutrients needed for a normal growth and development. Parents and caregivers can help prevent childhood obesity by providing healthy meals and snacks, daily physical activity, and nutrition education. Increased physical activity reduces health risks and helps weight management.This is an easy way of maintaining your childs diet because between the ages of 6-13 because around those ages whatever your parent does more than likely,your child will also.Parents play a role model in their childs life.By excersising and making it fun, cutting down snacks and junk food this will play a good role and great beginning in there childs life. There is a lack of ready access to healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.  Families in poorer communities often live in “food deserts” where supermarkets and grocery stores are scarce or charge higher prices for healthy foods than processed foods. Families with less income must often rely on convenience stores and small neighborhood stores that offer few, if any, healthy food choices. To make matters worse, many underserved communities, particularly in urban areas, have an overabundance of fast food establishments that are often located near schools and playgrounds.Parents also need to monitor amount of calories their child consumes.By the age of 13 an average child should be consuming 1,600 calories a day, and a more active child should consume about 2,000.  However, children began consuming more calories in 2007-2008, they began consuming 16 to 20% more calories a day. Surprisingly for an average child to become obese they need to consume 64 calories more than a normal child per day. By applying proper nutrition, better eating habits and physical activity, any child can live a healthy life.     


    Obesity can be prevented in many ways. By parents making sure their child is receiving physical activity on a daily bases, and a healthy diet, there parental involvement will better their children's growth and maintaining a healthy diet.When thinking of obesity, the thought is scary. This is a very big issue mainly in America  but other places also. It can even be prevented in more simpler ways such as ,Paying more attention to your child, showing them love and affection.Don’t closely monitor the amounts your child eats or nag your child to eat at mealtime.   This can interfere with your child’s response to hunger and feeling full.  These two responses are an important basis for healthy eating behaviors. This is preventing children from living a healthy normal life. It is very dangerous for the young crowd especially. Because it is growing rapidly and can cause a lot of health issues , that has to be surgically fixed or a very slow, long, crucial process to get rid of. Over time America is working to decrease the statistics of childhood obesity and prevent more from happening. All this can not be accomplished without the help of parents. Their support and motivation and control of their children's diet can help change this problem.  


    Ahinson Artist statement

    When i heard about this project I immediately thought to light up one of my hats. The reason i choose to do a Cowboys hat is because this is a Eagles city. I thought that my favorite team doesn't always get enough "shine" in Philadelphia. Originally i wanted to put the lights on top of the brim of the hat so the light shines on the brim but i came across a few problems. For one i didn't know how to make the holes. The material was too soft to drill, but if i just cut it the holes wouldn't be the correct shape. I decided to put the lights through the pre made holes at the top of the hat. I also wanted to have blue and white mixed lights but because of errors with my blue lights i ended up using my favorite color, red. My over all choice to choose this hat wasn't so much my love for headwear, but my interest in sports.

    Artist Statement: Physics and art together can produce something that is simple and eye catching. For our project we are making the letters “SLA” light up on a plastic backpack to show our school spirit. We are using the SLA theme colors blue and white with a pop of red for the heart to represent the attachment we have towards our school.

    ​My partner and I chose to do a back pack with the words SLA on it. We used 6 lights in a parallel circuit with a 9 volt battery. The color lights we chose were blue and white because those are our school colors. Since we had to have and off and on switch we decided that if you want to turn on the back pack you just tape the wire to the positive and negative parts of the battery. We also needed to find a way to put SLA on the back pack so we decided to put different colored smily faces because it would help make the lights pop. Although it does not look like all 6 bulbs are lit they are, they are just very dim.

    As sneaker collectors my partner and I have always talked about additions to shoes that can make them better and in some cases worse. When we found out we could put lights on our own custom made sneaker we immediately came up with the concept of a light up Jordan shoe.

    There was a wide range of shoes that could have been used, but we wanted ours to have a meaning behind it. Through our research we found that there was a Jordan shoe named the "Space Jams" inspired by his movie. We figured when someone thinks of space they think of stars and moon which can be sources of light.

    We went out and purchased a replica of the shoe and began to put in our ideas and apply what we learned about circuits to make a shoe that doesn't look as if we stuffed a bunch of wired inside and made a robotic shoe. But a fashion piece of art.

    Imani and I decided to pick a pumpkin because when we were first introduced to the project, it was around halloween time. We thought that out final product could represent the holiday theme. We thought that we could make the pumpkin look scary to fit the theme as well. 

    We used a 9 Volt battery in order for the pumpkin to be lite up. We created a three series circuit. We did this so that the brightness in all of the LED lights could have the same brightness. After we did all of the calculations, we noticed that our light would only last eleven hours. As in the picture, you can tell that the LED are all at the same brightness.

    Physics Circuit Project by Goldie Robins and Jessica Maiorano


    Artist Statement


    The reason our circuit project is on a Philadelphia Marathon poster because the Marathon is November 18th 2012 and we our participating in it by running the half marathon and the full marathon. We decided to make the poster big because it reminds us of the posters that people on the sidelines hold up while we run. The blue and green lights that are on our poster represent Students Run Philly Style. Students Run Philly Style is a program that train teenagers, like us to prepare for the marathon. The red lights represent the color in the Philadelphia Marathon logo. While running the half marathon/ marathon one feels like a star so we placed the lights on the middle of the stars. The sneakers one wears are the foundation of running and the main part of training so we wanted to light it up to show the importance and significance of the shoe. A circuit is, a complete and closed path around which circulating electric current can flow. Our project is made up of a three parallel branch circuit that each branch consists of three light bulbs. The reason behind making a parallel circuit is because we wanted to make the light bulbs all the same brightness and last longer. The voltage drop in each branch is the same because each light bulb has ≈ the same resistance.
