English Journal #41 – Write a letter you would never write to someone

Dear Leon,
I am very, very, very disappointed in you for what you did back in 1997. You don't remember, do you? You don't remember because you probably don't want to remember. Well here is a little FYI and reminder, you almost killed Ada! Yup, thats right, she is still alive... you feel salty. She was running as she tripped and flipped over a railing 40 feet high. She held on then you grabbed her hand. But you pulled a Scar and Mufasa act. You allowed her to fall, that was NOT nice! But now she is alive doing well in Raccoon City, winning, while you look stupid, hater.

Sincerely,
–Dan (#1 RE FAN)

English Journal #23 – Write about a time when you had an experience with something foreign

During Spring Break of 2011, my mom planned a vacation to Universal Studios in Florida. The problem was, we were driving instead of taking of a plane. So that meant sitting in a car for about 1,000 miles. Luckily it's the 21st Century and we have a GPS. The problem was, at about the 750th mile, technology failed on us. So as we we're passing through Savannah, we hit a detour. The GPS didn't notify us of the situation, we had to get off of I-95. As we pulled off the highway, we stopped at a Bojangles Restaurant to ask for directions. While they were explaining, we were understanding about 5% of it, due to the tense, strong southern dialect. So from there we went driving around Savannah trying to find our way back to the highway so we could proceed with our trek. 300 more miles to go.

Mixers statement

For this quarter I have been exposing my work to everyone in a new and innovative way and what I did was go on Usteam.com and do live broadcast of my work and letting people hear it instead of just recording them and just having them for my own personal benefit. Somethings that I have learned are that you play what every you feel like and also what the listeners want to hear and also to put my name out their in every chance I get so people can get to know what I do and also how I DJ. I am proud to say that I am currently the number 2 most searched under my name DJ_MALO.

Cancer " The Killer" Part 3

This is the last blog that I will be doing with the “ You in the World Project.” This is the post for change. This project has really opened my eyes to the struggle that people go through with cancer. Not only do they struggle with the sickness its self they have to worry if their health care will cover them. Cancer tears families apart not only in America but the whole world. In my past 2 blogs I talked about how the environment is affecting our health. I also talked a little about the things we do effect our health. In my 2nd blog I talked about how health coverage is in America and how we have to fight so that everyone has equal health care if anything was every to happen to them.

My Grand- Father was diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of 67. He had been a heavy smoker all his life, and was diagnosed with lung cancer, which soon spread to his brain and bones. Months before the doctors diagnosed him he was showing signs of some kind of sickness. He wasn’t himself and he became weak quickly when he would be doing any kind of physical activity. The doctors said that the cancer was forming quickly and it was spreading to other parts of his body. My family was trying to understand why doctors couldn’t see any symptoms of cancer before. Cancer forms over time not in a one-week span. Over the next 2 weeks he seemed to be getting a little better, he was taking so many medicines that doped him up it became very hard to talk to him. We wanted to spend as much time as we had left with him. He soon became very sick again and was admitted back into the hospital. That same day he died.

I tell this story of my grand-pa to say that you have to be screened, for any early signs of cancer. You have to have annual cancer screens. Also you have to make sure that no matter what that you have proper health coverage if you every need it. Also there are so many things you can do to prevent  cancer such a lung cancer by not smoking, even second-hand smoking is very bad (when you are constantly around someone who smokes.) Not having my Grand- Pa still with me tares me up inside. Thinking that if he stopped smoking or took care of him- self a little better he could have been with us for a little longer. If he had went to screenings or the doctor when he didn’t feel good they could have caught the cancer in time so that he could beat it.

For my change I want to give back to the cancer community, cause even though my Grand-Pa didn’t really have the chance to fight. I want to make sure that other people have that chance. I am going to volunteer at different cancer events in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas. For my change I am going to get a team together and we are going to volunteer to help out for the American Cancer Society 40th annual Bike-a-thon. The date for the bike-a-thon is July 8,2012.

Q4-Clouds and Moon

For the fourth and final two hour project, I decided to paint clouds with the moon above. I had the intentions of just painting clouds. However, when I was on YouTube learning how to paint clouds, I came across the video of someone painting clouds with the moon above. I loved the way that theirs came out. I wanted to see if I could do it myself. Therefore, I did. I liked the way that it turned out in the end. Overall, I was pleased with the work that I did. Below if a picture of the end result. Enjoy!

Q4- Tree Painting

The third project that I decided to do was a painting of a tree. This project was very hard for me. I was new to painting and had no idea how to paint a tree. However, I did a practice painting of the tree on a piece of paper before doing it on the canvas. Then, I did it on a relatively big canvas. Overall, I am extremely pleased by the way that it came out. Below is a picture of the finished product. Enjoy!

Q4-Crayon Melting

The second project that I decided to do was crayon melting. I saw a picture of crayon melting online and I thought it looked amazing. I decided to recreate it. I decided to draw a man sideways under an umbrella with the melted crayons as the rain. This project took a lot of energy and focus. Also, it was my first time ever doing something like this. Therefore, I filmed it and decided to make a tutorial on how I did it. Overall, I love the way that it turned out. Here is a link to the video describing how I did it. Below is a picture of how it turned out. Enjoy!

Blogpost #3

Reflection:

Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I spoke with Taina Rosario, in my Advisory. I chose her because I know her pretty well, and she was flexible with the schedule I have.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

I learned how she'll really feel when the seniors graduate from SLA, and who she really cherishes. I also found out about her weekend, what she likes to do, etc. That kind of touched base on the culture that I wanted to dig into. I know we like a lot of the same Spanish music, such as Prince Royce or Aventura.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

This helped me more towards my goal, because finally I realized that there are not only cultural similarities between people and I, but that I'm not terrible at Spanish. I wanted to gain confidence, an abstract goal, but it happened. The main thing was to stop second guessing myself.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
I did well on keeping the conversation in motion. I tried to balance asking questions and responding to them, as if the conversation were as comfortable as those in English,

What specifically do you need to improve on?
-Making more of an effort to speak with native Spanish speakers than I know in Spanish.
-Simply spending more time reviewing my tenses.
-Reading books in Spanish.

Q4- Color Wheel (Square)

I decided to make a color wheel as my first project for this quarter. Instead of a wheel, I used a square piece of paper. I did not know what colors I wanted to use at first. However, I ended up using 4 colors that were in the same color family. Because I did not know how I wanted to create it, I ended up filming everything. That way, I can make a final video describing how I did it overall. I like how it came out overall. I also love the way the video turned out. Here is a link to the video describing and showing how I did this color wheel (Square). Enjoy!

My Toast for Change (Infants with Hydrocephalus in Sub-Saharan) (Blog #3)

Hydro Visua limage .001
Hydro Visua limage .001

Before you start...read Blog #1 and Blog #2 !

Above, is a visual I have made to raise awareness in my school and in my community. This is one of the many ideas I have to not only raise awareness for the children with Hydrocephalus in Sub-Saharan Africa but also to really help them in a straight contact way. I have started a donation fund that I will be posting soon as a blog and also on my twitter ( @nikkiadeli ). Just from a person to person base I have raised 30 dollars in the past 3 days. I am researching different organizations to donate to but hopefully I can get in touch with some as soon as possible. The main idea I have for change now is to create a brace for mothers of infants who have hydrocephalus. In most of the developing affected countries, mothers of the infants are constantly working to provide not only for the baby affected by hydrocephalus but also for her other kids and family.
p-mnch-1
p-mnch-1
In the picture above, a mother is displayed holding her baby with a sling that is tightened around her body to hold the baby on her back. This sort of maneuver of grasping the baby is horrible for babies with Hydrocephalus. As the fluid in the brain gradually increases, the baby's head becomes more heavier for the baby itself to hold up on their own. The mother of the baby usually holds up the head when sitting down or standing. But this isn't an option when farming and harvesting food. Another obstacle the baby and mother must face. But the brace I am designing will give the chance for the mother to harvest, farm, and complete everyday chores without worrying about her baby's head being to heavy for the baby to handle. The brace attached to the sling around the mother will hold up the baby's head comfortably and effectively. If this sling brace actually starts to work, my dream is to produce more for these with a partnership with a charity or a program that would work with me to help change these families lives for the better.

My Post for Change

There are currently many things being done to raise awareness about teen pregnancy in America. It is talked about in health classes in schools, there are pamphlets about teen pregnancy in doctors' offices all over the nation. There are websites about preventing pregnancy.

But sometimes teenagers disregard these lessons because they feel that it is unlikely that this will happen and if it does, they can handle the responsibility. They feel "in the moment" and don't care about the possible results of their actions. They don't want to spend the money on contraception so they don't use it. I believe if you are not responsible enough to set aside money for preventative matters or can't afford it, then you shouldn't be having sexual intercourse.

Also, teen feel pressured by peers to have sex and are not smart about it. This is something I plan I believe I can change. I plan to make shirts with shocking statistics about teen pregnancy on front and the words "STOP TEEN PREGNANCY" and preventative ways listed on the back. This way, teens can where them and other teens can be educated from the shirt and possibly where them too. Here is the link to the prototype of my shirt.

I have not yet made the shirt but I am planning to make them soon. If they come by the time school is over, I will ask some of my peers to wear them.

Here's a link to my first blog and a link to my second blog. Here is a link to my bibliography.

Abstract Motion

When I work with pastels, I am reminded that I can smear and add a lot of effects to the drawing. My favorite materials and tools was both my fingers and my pastel. I begin a piece by having a back drop. Then I added my ideas onto the sheet using a sharpie. Then I add different colors to illustrate the motions.

The best thing I did was the cluttered motion below. It showed the different shapes wanting to get out. I know when a piece comes out right when some one asks me: Is that supposed to be abstract?" and question it. But to me, as long as it falls under the moving category, it works! My favorite colors were the light faded colors and as you can see, I used them to my advantage.

I know a piece is done when I can step back and look at all of the work I did. I also can look at my work and have a sigh of relief because I see what I am capable of. When my work is going well, I am filled with a sense of relief. When people see my work, I'd like them to see my hard work and give me their comments.

Painting A Ceiling Tile

When choosing what to paint, I was so confused. I wanted to paint an elephant but I didn't want to show political status. Then I wanted to paint the sky but that was taken. I wanted to a panda but that would be hard. So I looked around the room and saw a character. Then I took my sharpie and started to free hand a face and messed up a lot. But I figured that I would be painting over it a few times so I didn't worry about it a lot. The next question was "which ceiling tile?"
I first got my paint together and started to paint the background and the face. It was a little hard because it required a lot of paint and I had to fill in all of the holes in the ceiling tile. The whole process was pretty easy but too a lot of time and a lot of different size paint brushes.
I know a piece is done when I can step back and look at all of the work I did. I also can look at my work and have a sigh of relief because I see what I am capable of. When my work is going well, I am filled with a sense of relief. When people see my work, I'd like them to see my hard work and give me their comments. I also want them to see my drawing and remember who did it and show people what a student can do.

Wire Drawings

For this project, I chose to switch my "Observation Landscape" drawing to"Drawing with Wires". I saw this project in a family magazine and automatically knew that I wanted to do this. I just needed the materials. One of them are pliers, wire, and scissors. I chose this project because it is something that no one has done before in my class and I wanted to see how I would react to it. Surprisingly, it looks easy when you start but then the wire starts to bend and mess up. If I could do this again, I would get a plastic coated wire so the bents and twists (that were mess ups) wouldn't show as much.

I first got my materials. Then I drew a stencil on a piece of paper with out picking up the pencil point because I was planning to use just one long strand of wire. Then I started both of my wire drawings at the feet to reconnect them in the end. I used the pliers to finalize all of the twists and turns I had to make. My favorite tool was the pliers. Personally, I like the elephant over the panda. This is because the people I showed it too said my panda looked like a rhino.

I know a piece is done when I can step back and look at all of the work I did. I also can look at my work and have a sigh of relief because I see what I am capable of. When my work is going well, I am filled with a sense of relief. When people see my work, I'd like them to see my hard work and give me their comments. I would also like them to see a panda and an elephant in my drawing.

Observation Drawing - Close up drawing

I chose to draw a box of Skittles because it had a lot of colors I liked. The colors were very faded and relaxed. My favorite tool was the ruler because I had to draw a lot of straight lines for the box. The best thing about my drawing is the colors that I used because they were very unique. I changed the little Skittles on the box; instead of saying "S", it has either a "S" or a "?".

When I work with close up drawings, I am reminded that I must be very detailed and use proportions correctly. I began a piece by drawing the box. I know a piece is done when I can look back and compare the box and my drawing and see the similarities. When my work is going well, I am filled with a sense of relief. When people see my work, I'd like them to what I was drawing and show them the changes I have made to my drawing compared to on the box.

Abstract

In my previous posts, I made a number of drawings for bother abstract emotion and abstract motion. The next step was to either incorporate the drawings or just start from scratch. I didn't really want to do that because I wanted people to see how I can mix in my work together so I made a quilt! This was a messy project because all of my drawings were covered in pastels and they were getting pastel powder every where. Also, it was also hard to keep them from smearing.

The steps I took to complete my quilt weren't as simple as I thought they would be. I first gathered my materials which was yarn, scissors, hole puncher and my abstract drawings. I first hole punched my drawings and then connected them together with yarn. At the time, I had both landscape pictures and portrait pictures so it was hard to attached them together but I finally got it in the end.

I know a piece is done when I can step back and look at all of the work I did. I also can look at my work and have a sigh of relief because I see what I am capable of. When my work is going well, I am filled with a sense of relief. When people see my work, I'd like them to see my hard work and give me their comments.

Abstract Emotion

When I work with pastels, I am reminded that I can smear and add a lot of effects to the drawing using my hands and a wet paper towel. My favorite materials and tools is both my fingers and my pastel. Then I added my ideas onto the sheet using a sharpie. Then I add different colors to illustrate the emotions. That was pretty hard because I didn't know what emotion was supposed to look like in abstract form so I just added a ton of different colors together.

The best thing I did was the colored eyes below. It's okay if you can't really see it. There are a lot of crazy emotions below and I am proud of all of them. It showed the different shapes wanting to get out. I know when a piece comes out right when some one asks me: Is that supposed to be abstract?" and question it. But to me, as long as it falls under the moving category, it works! My favorite colors were the light faded colors and as you can see, I used them to my advantage.

I also can look at my work and have a sigh of relief because I see what I am capable of. When my work is going well, I am filled with a sense of relief. When people see my work, I'd like them to see my hard work and give me their comments.

Hospital and Nursing Abuse #3

On blog 1 I discovered what I wanted to do my research on. On blog 2 I found numerous amounts of information on types of cases and stories that have gone unreported. I found it interesting to learn that the lives of most of these elders and patients have been put directly in the hands of their abusers.  Most of this information breaks many hearts but yet many people are also unaware that these attacks and abuse are happening.

After doing weeks of research, I have found and discovered that abuse does not have an age limit. No matter what age you are you can be abused. But I refuse to let this continue. Though I am only a freshmen in high school, I believe that just as anyone can get abused, anybody can make a change. I plan to encourage people on June 15th 2012 to go out and contribute to the day of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day also known as WEAAD. This is a day to try and raise awareness for the elders around the world being abused. I want to send the message to all to go out into their community and visit nursing homes and hospitals to stress this issue that needs to be put to an end.

Some of the acknowledgements I would like to give is to those who have come together to give each one of these elders another chance at life and for those trying to raise and stress this issue through out the world.

I have made a movie to specify my plan of change and info that I have found over the course of these weeks.

Media's Idea of 'Perfect': Change Now !

Hello, it’s me again, Kennedy. I’m here today for my Post for Change, my third post about media’s impact on young girls. I’ve posted twice before, with Media’s Idea of ‘Perfect’ and Media’s Idea of ‘Perfect’ 2. In my previous posts, I blogged about the effects of airbrushing in fashion magazines had on teenage girls, leading to all types of eating disorders. Girls strive to be perfect, or close to it. Many girls look at a celebrity in a magazine with unrealistic proportions and thin bodies. The media worships these girls and praise them for being perfect, even though they’re not real and everything is Photoshopped or airbrushed.

In this blog post, I am sharing what I’m presently doing to change this issue and correct it. Currently, I am looking into making a petition to stop airbrushing in magazines. Many people have made and signed petitions, but I'll still make one to get my voice heard. I'll have a link up soon when I make the petition. I want everybody to sign and be apart of my change.

Also, I want to email the petition to certain magazine editors to ask them to change their ways and to inform their photo-takers to watch what they do to these models and celebrities.

Quarter 4 Art Blog

During the 4th quarter i completed Abstraction Emotion - any size (not smaller then 8-11”). I had to Choose an emotion and create a painting/drawing/collage/photograph. I also completed Abstraction Motion - any size (not smaller then 8-11”)here we had to Choose an motion and create a painting/drawing/collage/photograph. i also starred to just go with my own flow so i created a Peace tile off the celling. I also completed two types of picture colleges that i made with my phone i thought it was creative and cool.

My abstract emotion was created by me just going with the flow and letting my hands do the job with the paint brush. i feel like the emotion part come in with the dark colors that i used. My Abstraction Motion was shooting star with hearts and the colors is what brought out the motion they were really bright to bring out the happiness in a shooting star. My celling tile idea came from the tattoo on my arm it was going to be a full peace love and happiness but i run out of time so i just created the peace sign. My picture colleges came from just playing around with my apps on my cell phone and putting pictures together that i really love and adding color to it. it was really the easiest thing ever to do i just thought it would be cool to add it in there for art class. Though out this fourth quarter i have worked really well and did a great job of putting colorful art work together.

My year in Art was a great one i learned many things. my favorite thing to do in art this year was to make happy bright paintings because of what they express, happiness. Art this year has been creative from day one till now i have had to use my imagination in way i never have and at the end of the day it got me good grades the teacher always loved what my crazy mind came up with. I am happy to have taken art this year i will miss it in the years to come but i know i can always visit and paint something bright and pretty cool.

Samuel Kabangai 10% time project

For my 10% time project, I decided to look at the risks of tattoo's. A lot of the people I know are getting tattoos, some fro professionals and other from a random guy in the basement with the tools. I wanted to look up and inform people about the risks and also some examples of tattoos going wrong. My goal is to inform people and make them think twice about the choices they want to make.

Homelessness blog 3

This is you and the world blog 3. This is basically the summary. My project was on homelessness and the effects. It can affect many, and is a very important topic. The project was interesting because it explained homelessness to me, and how it was. The project told me homeless can hurt many, and that they can be affected mentally. I think homelessness should be shown to everybody, so more people can know the seriousness of it. Homelessness is defined as not having a set place to sleep at in the nighttime.

My blog one just showed facts about homelessness, and how it can destroy people. It told that about 4,00 people are homeless. It tells how mayor Nutter banned feeding the homeless in public parks. Blog 1 was really my information blog, and that it helped people understand the aspects of homelessness. It tells way to contain homelessness, and ways people can help. It is really just to bring the reader into my blog, and get them ready for the blogs to follow. My blog one was really important.

My blog two was about opinion, about how I felt. I really showed how I felt, and how important the subject was to me. Then I started to tell how it was wrong, and how that the people can help. It told how I felt about the mayor making this ban. I really disliked how he banned feeding the homeless. I also had other information in this blog. I showed how I kept up on my research. I really was passionate on this blow, and it will show.

My post for change was that i was going to show my video to my advisory. If i show it to them, they can also try to make a change. That would make more people, and would be a greater change. The saying 2 heads are better that one can express the change, because more people can make a better change.

This blog that I am currently writing summarized the blogs, and showed everybody that this is a subject I really care about. I hope we can help end homelessness for a couple people, so I can feel as though I made a difference. If I could help just one person I could feel so much satisfaction. My blogs were important to me, and if you read them you will feel the same.

You and The World: Teenage Obesity Blog Post #3

Hey guys! This is the last and final blog post about teenage obesity in my perspective.

During the posting of these blogs, I have informed you on how important teenage obesity is, the effects, and the risks. Getting a chance to hear out other people’s voices about this issue was really helpful. I wanted to tell you the majority of some of the main responses I got from my survey. Thankfully, a lot of the people that took the survey agree with me on a lot of things that have to do with teenage obesity. Like me, people that took my survey said that teenage obesity is a very dangerous thing. They also said that people should be exercising more. I was glad to see that a lot of the students from my school agreed that our school store should be selling better and healthier snacks.

I am pleased to say, there has been several successful acts of change for my topic. It gives me inspiration that I can make a change too. I researched a woman named Lee-lee Pina who has posted a website bringing awareness to people. The website gives information on blogs, books, and other things to make a change to prevent teenage obesity. It also gives information on things that might have been causing obesity.

I want to help stop teenage obesity. If I can’t stop it completely, I at least want to spread the word about this issue. I want to get people’s attention and show them that the slightest things can help you go a long way. I have made a simple guide for teenagers to stay fit. It’s a guide that says easy meals to make that are healthy, and easy excersizes they can do. I made this guide because actions speak louder than words. I want to get people’s attention and show them that it is possible to not go through a tragic experience, like obesity. However, I think this is a well-deserved time to show that one person can help a whole lot of people.

Besides spreading awareness, I want to physically make a change to prevent this issue.  To make a change, I am raising money to donate. I will be donating money to theAltaMed Foundation. This foundation helps raise money to start more programs to help children with their health, nutrition, and exercise. No matter how much money I raise, it’s the thought and effort that counts. Either way, I will be ecstatic to help teenagers and even younger kids with their health.

Who knows? Maybe you can make a change too.
