Elementary, My Dear Students.

Posted by Elizabeth Vellozzi in Art - Freshman - Hull on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at 12:11 am

My element, Antimony, is very interesting. One thing that I found the most interesting was, ancient Egyptians used Antimony in their eye makeup. Also, when antimony is heated, it admits a silvery dust. This dust is described as a magically silver color. So for my project I decided to combine the two. I designed a tile with the Egyptian god of Magic on it. It was also very lucky that this god in particular is always depicted with very eccentric eye makeup designs.

Element Project

Posted by Maggie Clampet-Lundquist in Art - Freshman - Hull on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 6:48 pm

In this project we had to incorperate the five values. I believe that research is incorperated in this project, because we had to do research on our elements to be able to know what type of design to make. Collaboration was included in this project, because we had to paint the tiles and this took collaboration, because we all had to work together. Presentation: we didn't stand up and present, but we did present by uploading our element print pictures. This is a reflection, what I'm writing is me reflecting on everything I've done over the process of this project. Inquiry is something we needed for this project.

Negative Space Three Sketches

Posted by Micah Henry in Art - Freshman - Hull on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 11:47 pm

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it) Negative space is the space of a drawing where other things are not there. In other words, it is the space around and in between an object.

 B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your still life drawing? I found negative space by drawing the space that is not the object but the space that is around or intertwined with the object.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space? It helps an artist to see in negative space because it gives artists different perspectives on art and their drawings, therefore they can expand upon the depth of their drawings.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not? Seeing in negative space does enhance drawings because it helps artists see the difference of positive and negative space, as a result the artist can use both at will, enhancing their masterpieces.

Element Project

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in Art - Freshman - Hull on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 10:08 pm

In creating this project all five of SLA's core values.
The most important of these five is Inquiry, which was defiantly needed with this project. Since we where assigned the elements we did out projects on most of the students involved had no idea what their elements where, so we had to do extensive research on our elements in order to pick what image would be used in our print. This research consisted of, all the scientific facts associated with our elements, the people that discovered them, and interesting facts about them.
Collaboration was used throughout the process of making the printing plates themselves. Each student had to etch their symbol/image into the linoleum provided to them, and this was an exceedingly difficult task and all the students in class helped each other in getting the hang of the cutting tools and the most effective methods of maneuvering the linoleum.
When it comes to presentation every child in art class presented their best prints to the entire world. We did this by combing our technological knowledge with out art knowledge to post a blog post on the internet sharing our knowledge everywhere.
The fifth and final core value, Reflection. This value was also reflected in the blog post you are reading now. Each one showing how each publisher feels about their project and what they learned through the project process.

Element Project

Posted by Pilar Carroll in Art - Freshman - Hull on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 9:12 pm

Inquiry: I used Inquiry while looking up things about my Element. Not just things about Lithium, but unknown things about lithium to get a good Idea for the print.

Research:I had to research a lot of information about Lithium, such as who founded it, to what it's used in.

Collaboration:I Collaborated with my friends and Ms.Hull on this project to ask if things could be improved of to ask if my print looked okay.

Presentation: I printed the Drawings I made of Lithium, and we're going to put the prints up in the hall way. I guess that's sort of like presenting.

Reflection: As I was making my print I realized things that I did wrong, and could Have done better on and I Improved them.

Elements Project

Posted by Olivia Mack in Art - Freshman - Hull on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 12:38 pm

Inquiry- I used this because I had to look up things that I didn't know about my element. I had to think about what I was going to draw.

Research- I had to research images and information about Gallium my element in order to do this. I had to research what Gallium was.

Collaboration- I use this by asking people to help me and helping other people. I got ideas from my friends on what I should've drew.

Presentation- In the end was the final project which was the final drawling. It had to be a certain size and it had to matted or not matted.

Reflection- I am writing the reflection right now. Also, the reflection is when I finished my drawling and I have the final product, I can reflect on whether I though I did well.

Element Prints Project

Posted by Caitlin Keough in Art - Freshman - Hull on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 11:48 am

Inquiry: I had to use inquiry because I had to find things out about my element that I didn't know. I also had to use it when I was making my prints and matting them because I had never done it before.

Research: I had to use research a lot in the beginning of the project. I had to do a lot of research to figure out which things copper was related to to use in my three drawing ideas.

Collaboration: I collaborated with classmates a lot in this project. At times I had trouble or someone else had trouble with something so to figure it out we collaborated a little.

Presentation: I'm pretty sure these prints will be posted around the school somewhere. I had to make them look nice and look presentable so I would be proud to see mine on the wall somewhere.

Reflection: By answering these questions I am reflecting. Also I made a few mistakes in the process of printing and matting and I reflected what I did wrong.

Negative Space

Posted by Noah Caruso in Art - Freshman - Hull on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 10:49 am

1. What is negative space?

Negative space is the area around the object you are drawing.

2. I found negative space in both my drawings and my cutouts by drawing the object first, and then shading around it.

3. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps an artist to see in negative space because he is able to determine the difference between light and dark.

4. Does negative space enhance your drawings?

Yes because it helps make the object in the drawing more distinct and visible by making it contrast with the negative space around it.

Element Project

Posted by Noah Caruso in Art - Freshman - Hull on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 9:41 am

Inquiry- I had to ask a lot of questions because I didn't know much about the random element I was assigned. It was fun to find out more about something I barely knew existed.

Research- We had to research our element. We had to find out what it was used in, how to represent it in a drawing. We had to research it.

Collaboration- Our friends helped research and suggest ideas. They really helped to make our projects the best they can be.

Presentation- Our prints are going to be posted and shown all around the school. We had to make sure they were presentable and looking good.

Reflection- I had an interesting experience doing this project. It was fun learning about a new element and doing something I had never done before. Many band aids were used during the cutting process :3
