Globalization 4th Quarter Benchmark

Big Idea: Evidence of globalization is everywhere in our day-to-day activities.  All around us, the influences of global factors drive decisions, impressions and understanding.  In order to internalize this influence and impact, we look to our familiar surroundings for images that represent the different topics and themes we study in Globalization.

Basics:

  • Take 10 original photos that represent a different aspect of the globalization curriculum – reference the course outline for a list of the themes and concepts
  • For each of the images, write at least two paragraphs that explain the connections between the image and the globalization theme.  These paragraphs need to draw clear connections between the theme, Philadelphia and reputable resources.
  • A 10 source bibliography (not annotated) MLA format
  • Choose a presentation tool that best represents your ideas (this are just a few ideas, there are many, many more)
    • o    http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp?gclid=COevzt3KrqECFQmU7QodCVMOAQ
o    Keynote has some great templates for creating an essay with audio and text
      o    http://www.joggle.com/
        •    with this tool you can just record your analysis if you like, pretty easy to use.
      o    http://photopeach.com/
      o    Google Presentation
      o    Here http://inmotion.magnumphotos.com/
        •    great site that has some of the best photo essays I have ever seen. Also we can use Imovie to make slide shows as well if people don't want to learn a new program.

  • Post a link to your work on sla.org

Suggested Use of Time in Class:

Week One:  Brainstorm a list of images/scenes that you would like to capture and tie each of those to a theme from the Globalization course outline.

Week Two: Research each of the themes, looking for a reputable source to support the ideas you would like to represent in each of the different images and corresponding paragraphs.  When you write your paragraphs, you should specifically cite these sources in the paragraphs.

Week Three: Write your paragraphs and complete your bibliography, pull together the images, paragraphs and bibliography into a published format.

Outside of class homework: Collect images and finalize any requirements not finished in class.

Example:

The demographic shift within Alma Center, WI is best exemplified by these side by side signs.  Over the past 20 years, the number of Spanish speaking immigrants has grown dramatically in this small, rural farming town.  Interestingly the long settled families of this area match many of the cultural and societal norms of the new immigrants settling in the area with a focus on religion and families.  Prior to the recent migration of Latino immigrants, the predominant cultural backgrounds were from Northern Europe.

Immigrant migration into small farming communities was best explained in this article by …. (you get the picture)

Benchmark and Reflection

Benchmark!:
Here it is.

Reflection:
What did you find most challenging about this project?

I found the most challenging aspect of this project to be first sitting down and simply starting than determining the validity of certain choices. I remember distinctly choosing a few that I felt were somewhat like "cheating" when in fact it simply highlighted the global nature of globalization.

How did you go about collecting the images or selecting the images?
I spent one morning wandering about with camera attempting to capture globalization. I imagine I looked a great deal like crazed tourist unfamiliar with the popular landmarks. After a short break, I decided the other somewhat more logical choice of thinking of the sites I wished to photograph before leaving the comfort of home.

Which image is your favorite? Why? Elaborate.
My favorite image was the safety image. It was a lovely morning when I took the picture and now each time I look upon it, I think only of the pleasantness of that morning. I am sorry, as this is probably not the answer you were looking for but it is the only one I have. Well, I should amend- the only one I will happily give for it is the only that is true.

How prevalent is the evidence of globalization in Philadelphia? Do you think it is more or less so (evident) than in other large cities in the US? Why Why not?
I think that globalization is quite prevalent in Philadelphia. I think that all large cities in the United States have similarly levels. This project showed how deeply ingrained globalization has become in our cullture and I think if we were to do this project in any other large cities we would find similar results. Granted, the overall amount may be the same but there may be some differences on the more specific levels. (Other cities may not have as high a Hispanic population or an Italian market, etc.)

Harrison Talese-Rhodes' Q4 Benchmark Reflection

Posted by Harrison Talese-Rhodes in Globalization - Laufenberg on Friday, June 3, 2011 at 9:48 am

  • What did you find most challenging about this project?
The most challenging part was definitely finding picture that I could use. Once I fully grasped the purpose of the benchmark it was easier to identify things, but it's still a hassle to travel around the city and find the things. I also had a problem with the camera aspect-- namely, I didn't have one. I was forced to use my old camera phone, from which I had to text the pictures to a friend in order to gain access to them on the computer. It was also sort of tough to embellish on the globalization for each topic.
  • How did you go about collecting the images or selecting the images?
I used recommendations from peers, teachers, and my own ideas to assemble a group of appropriate topics as I understand the subject.
  • Which image is your favorite? Why? Elaborate.
I like the picture of the Italian Market sign because I feel it is a perfect example of the topic and I have grown up in that area for my entire life, so it feels really special.
  • How prevalent is the evidence of globalization in Philadelphia? Do you think it is more or less so (evident) than in other large cities in the US? Why Why not?
It is evident in many ways that we don't normally consider, definitely. Any time we use technology or eat food, we are touched by globalization in some way. This project has definitely gotten me thinking about the whole process of product from beginning to end.

Here is my benchmark.

Benchmark Reflection:

  • What did you find most challenging about this project?
I found most challenging the process of getting the pictures or paragraphs done first. Sometimes ideas that were written down for me for the different topics actually gave me a better idea and analysis then going off of the picture that I originally took first.
  • How did you go about collecting the images or selecting the images?
I took mass amount of pictures through different cameras in school and my phone camera. I uploaded all to my email and somehow having alot of trouble presenting them on the google doc.

  • Which image is your favorite? Why? Elaborate.
I dont have a favorite image, I would say though the picture of Jefferson in the lights from far shows the distant feeling of a hospital. How close it is to a person and how far away it actually is. Its a different view then the other pictures and shows a different aspect to a somewhat simple picture that couldve been taken.
  • How prevalent is the evidence of globalization in Philadelphia? Do you think it is more or less so (evident) than in other large cities in the US? Why Why not?

I think their is some globalization in Philadelphia but I dont think it is unique in any way. I believe every city has everything that Philadelphia has globally connected and otherwise more then what Philadelphia has. Larger cities such as New York as a prime example shows that it is much more evident through trading and resources because of the different buildings, size, and popularity that New York is able to carry over Philadelphia.

Here is my benchmark.

Benchmark Reflection

  • What did you find most challenging about this project?
I found that the most challenging part of this project was to find a correlation between the topics we looked in globalization and what we see around us here in Philly.
  • How did you go about collecting the images or selecting the images?
Most of the images I collected with Jen when we were allowed to go out for images. There was some stuff i knew that I wanted to take pictures of because I already knew it would connect to one of themes. I also took pictures of stuff that I wasn't sure how it exactly connected but knew they could be interesting to talk about.
  • Which image is your favorite? Why? Elaborate.
My favorite image is of the massive amount of bikes we have in the stair well. it's my favorite because I think it shows that we leaders in more ways than one. A good amount of teachers bike to and from school and some students do too.
  • How prevalent is the evidence of globalization in Philadelphia? Do you think it is more or less so (evident) than in other large cities in the US? Why Why not? I think there is a tremendous amount of evidence of globalization in Philadelphia but I also think other larger cities have more. For example gay marriage is a much bigger issue in San Francisco rather than here in Philadelphia. Overall, though I think a lot of themes are prevalent. This is a very historic city.

    Alexis Ukaha Quarter4 Benchmark

If you click Globalization in my Community you will be able to access the keynote I produced, that reveals the different photos taken in my community which represents varies themes in globalization.

    • What did you find most challenging about this project?
The thing I found to be most challenging about this project was taking pictures in the my community that reflected the different themes listed for globalization. It's not that I didn't know how to explain those themes, I just found it hard to actually find those themes in the area where I lived. Also managing time was a little difficult for me. Because we were given so long, I kept delaying the assignment.
    • How did you go about collecting the images or selecting the images?
I didn't have a specific method for collecting the photos, the only thing I tried to do was focus on the theme and figure out what would best correspond. The mindset I had was if I couldn't actually get the picture I wanted, then get something that was in the general ball park of my explanation and explain why I couldn't get the actual picture I wanted and explain how the one I actually took was appropriate.
    • Which image is your favorite? Why? Elaborate.
My favorite image would have to be the photo I took for the theme Society, Culture, Gender. I mean, for starters it is a picture of me getting a body piercing on the back of my neck which elaborates on the culture portion of the theme. It's the most exciting picture I've ever seen in my life, and I have a lot of body piercings so it's almost like globalization lives with me.
    • How prevalent is the evidence of globalization in Philadelphia? Do you think it is more or less so (evident) than in other large cities in the US? Why Why not?
I think the obvious things like Health, and Trade or anything involving the economy (well not really) are more evident in Philadelphia in terms of globalization. But as far as education, and society, those topics were a little hard to see. I don't think it has anything to do with the city being large (because if anything I think it would appear more evident) however I think it mainly depends on the eye one has for globalization. Because I've never noticed certain things before, it made it a lot harder to notice them now, and I've always been told: you see what you want to see.
