Myi Harte's Capstone

By working with PCR I what to have a deeper understand of the sport and how the boat works. I also what to work on ways to help better or help move PCR far there than it is now. This Capstone came to be because I what to give back to PCR for all that they have done for me, Like a big way to say thank you and help inspire the new wave of rowers on the team. Stuff that I want to know more about rowing like what a coach thinks about making a boat or placing people in the boat. I also want to talk to people that have been in the sports for a while to get different view of the sport and what they got out of it or why they stayed.

This project helps enable me to see what i can do in the future for my next crew team or any team sport that i will join. To me bing on the team is cool but if you're going to be apart of it you need to put the time into it and show not just others that you are up to the task of going over the bar and doing the most not just to shine but make the team shine too. Also for the job that i want working with PCR right now is most likely one of the best things that could happen for me, I want to be able to coach or run team of my own even be able to work at a gym or be a sports therapist. I’m given the operator to work beside my coaches and being the oldest on and the most time at PCR on the boy’s team the captain and other rowers often come and ask me question on how to get the edge or get ahead to win or get in the top five on and erg pacie.

Looking at the start of PCR and now that I am in my last year with them I see how much has changed going for one of the one that wasn’t at the top but at the back of the park to then the middle then find out that things get hard so i fell behind but them talking to people that rowed and are coaches I jumped back to it and started to lead the pack. Now that I’m the oldest I have to push myself to the limit not just for myself but to help push my teammates to try hard and fight for something.

The olympic has a lot into what happens from the coaching and rowing side of crew. Within this link I was able to find great information about sculling and. sweeping. I helped me think about the differences in level you have to be in each one. Like going from sculling to sweeping you have to change the time you apply power in you strock and when going to sweeping to sculling you have to know when the best time to apply all of you power not just right away. This helped me alot before I went and talked to my coaches about the boats and what happens when they make a line up for a boat and why they believe that it is the best for the team and the people in the boat to race or practice in.

Concept 2's website helped me when I wanted to know more about the erg before I took it apart. I learned a lot about what goes into the design of the erg and how there are different version that add new things and up there power to read what the rower is doing, also how best the rower can get from rowing on the erg. I was filled in on information on the chip that reads the fan in the erg and what the watts output read has to do with the drag on the chain. Concept 2 also gave a lot of detail in what type of erg would be best for a team and how they have way for the ergs to work together if it’s just two or 10 of them lined up.

Row2k helped with the times that boats have won races and why it may have played out that way in that crew team's favor. On a day of a race there are updates on the run on the water and what why it is flowing. You can also get the times of races and compare it to others on the same of different level of rowing. With row2k you can also get information on the wind at the race, the wind plays a big role in how the race plan may change like the rate of the boat going down the course and also change the minds of may rowers if not read for it.

I found great information when reading over this article on the weight of the shell. With the time that goes into the outside of the shell and what they use was beyond me but I feel like this helped to put everything more together for me as understanding why it cost so must for just one boat with all the facts of row science behind the company’s that make most racing shells and the boat that olympic teams use and why they're so trusting to that company. I also go more on just how some of the races had problem and what they did to get over them and make new verison that are top of the line and best for your team and size of rowers and the weight of them and how best to put them in the boat to race.

I found this website to help more with my understand or the fundamentals of the boat and what it the hull and shell design is one of the most important things when looking at boats for crew. Helping to get a basics on buying used or new boats off the line.understanding what the alignment of the hull needs to be or can be finding the stability of the over shell and the low water resistance you can find like looking for free speed. I also found new info on the run of a boat and how to maximums it and the trim of the overall boat.

Now this website goes in on the hull depth of more than just one of vespoli hulls for 8s but show the numbers and math they use to get the best out of there boats. You get the vespoli EXL, EL, i for a lighter crew then the vespoli EM and ES looking at it the weight of the rowers play a big role in what weight range the boat is for. Some boat don’t go from 185-205 but have one weight like 205, then is shows the water line or where the boat sits on the water. Then how much of the boat is really in one on top of the water when in and how much displacement you have in the boat.

Here I found more of the rules and what is needed for your team or crew to be put in races, more than just the regular season but nationals to. It goes into how your team and crew can make it to nationals and have a chance to place. I found that the placement of novice even if the rowers is a senior works and why it’s made that why. Like if you are a senior and row even as a novice you can be placed in a variety race. I learned at penalties the crew can get in a race and why the rules are that why. it’d s for the safety of not just the people racing but others getting to the top of the starting line.

I found a cool PDF of what is need and looked at in a coxswain form the coaches and rowers. I got a cool understanding of recruiting a coxswain because most rowers will just say we need someone loud and can go down a straight line but it’s a lot more for a high level coxswain they need to know the laws of the river or body of water they are on when to yield and make calls that not only will save the team from hitting something or hitting them. On different bodies of water that may have motorised boat there are rolls to who goes first and has the right away and what the moto boat has to do when crew boats go by them.there a lot on a coxswain to have tools the team need on and off the water.

A word that popped up a lot was Hydrodynamics now this came to be from marine architecture used to design rowing shells and what level that have a bend or speed and efficiency in the water. It’s a study that helped and still helps the characteristics and movement of the object in the water. It looks at the movement of the hull and the oars through the water at different and then the same time to get the best out of the row. Gave me new meaning to how big oars dragging on the water is and why you want is to be off.

This give the story of not a rower on a team or the head coach of one but the coxswain of the head team in London. This story tells you about what she went through and what problem she had when getting to the point she is know. Talks about the training that the team would do and how she tried to get through it and how they worked around it with the help of the team and the coach helping to get them far no matter the time it toke.
