Kindred - Episode 1

Group members: Adrie, Reese, MJ, Aylin, Amber. In this episode, we review the first 65 pages of the novel Kindred by Octavia E. Butler. We see the main character, Dana, travel through time when her ancestor is in danger, have rough encounters with a slavery-infested world, and save a young boy’s life multiple times. We discuss our first impressions and find quotes and analyze them deeply, discussing the ideas in the context of the book, the past, and the present. Lastly, we share our predictions for what we believe will happen next, and prepare to read further and invest deeper into this book. Quotes: “The courtesy of calling me what I want to be called.” (p. 25) “I had seen people beaten on television and in the movies. I had seen the too-red blood substitute streaked across their backs and heard their well-rehearsed screams. But I hadn’t lain nearby and smelled their sweat or heard them pleading and praying, shamed before their families and themselves.” (p. 36)
