New buttons on blog create page

Posted by Anthony Harley on Friday, September 9, 2011 at 7:29 pm
Public or Private

We made some changes to the blog create page over the summer. There is a new "Visibility" toggle that you can click to make the blog public or private. It looks like this.

visibility
visibility

If you select private than only those with user accounts on the site can see the blogpost. However if you hit public everyone who visits can see it. It defaults to public so make sure you don't forget to set private if you want it to private.

Embed Content Button

On the bottom of the blog form next to the button to insert pictures and whatnot there is a new button. It says "Paste Embed Code" and thats all the instructions you need. Simple click that and paste any embed code inside the new window. No more dealing with pesky html yourselves.

Ok so we aren't going to lie and say that tagging was never broken. We saw the complaints and have fixed all of the bugs. if you separate tags by commas now they all will become their own individual tag. Also if you forgot to hit enter now, its cool. Tagging will take whatever is in the field too and make it a tag.

The last feature to announce will be the new google integration on the site. Look forward to the announcement in the next few days.

RSS Features

Posted by Anthony Harley on Friday, September 9, 2011 at 6:55 pm
We have added RSS feeds to most of the pages. You can get a feed of the blogposts for an individual course page, an individual tag page, or the global blog page.

Getting Global Blog RSS Feed

All you need is the link for this one. It's "scienceleadership.org/blog/rss".

Getting Tag RSS Feed

First you need to think of the tag you want your blogpost to filter by. We will use the Homepage tag in the example url. The url would be "scienceleadership.org/tags/Homepage/rss" but you could replace Homepage with any tag you want to see.

Getting Course Section RSS Feed

This one is a little tricker instructions are as follows:

1. Go to the Course Page
2. Go all the way to the bottom and click the rss icon that looks like this

3. Copy that link and use it wherever you want.

New Course Tools Feature

Posted by Anthony Harley on Monday, September 5, 2011 at 3:20 am
As you know Slate has many new features for staff and students to use. Some of the new Features include course tools for staff. You will find it on the right side of an individual course page in bold. Course Tools includes a handy Copy Emails button which allows you to bring up all of the student's emails in that course. This way sharing with the class will be much easier.

The next link is for downloading a roster of All students in that class. The roster is pre-sorted by "LastName, FirstName" and includes last name, first name, user name, email, student id, advisor, and graduation year.

Stairs are dangerous

Posted by Anthony Harley in Storytelling - Chase on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 12:43 pm
Don't attempt to walk backwards while doing a handstand and pouring a cup of tea at the same time. This will only end well and bring for the many haters who are invisible who will then kill you. Remember bad ideas don't kill you, haters hating on these bad ideas kill you. :D

First Post in a while

Wow writing these...not the best use of my time. I don't understand why we do this everyday because eventually I just run out of things i need. This isn't the  least bit entertaining nor do I have the artistic talent to make anything anyone will ever want to read on their down time. It's pointless for me to probably even post this up here. Sadly I need the credit for the journal today so what I will do is leave you with a quote from portal 2. Actually I am too lazy to look it up. Enjoy the gibberish instead sntauhsontehusanotuhsanoteuhsaonteuhsnaoteuhsaonetuhaoeu

Red Dead Reach Cat in the hat Random stuff

Posted by Anthony Harley in Storytelling - Chase on Sunday, March 6, 2011 at 8:04 pm
So this is going to be a story about a series of random things I see around the room and my thoughts on them. There seems to be a sombrero and a cat in the hat hat next to each other. Seems like a contradiction. Not sure why though. There is a poster of an extremely high caterpillar on the wall and a chuck norris poster. I see a mini fridge that doesn't work.....thats about it

Single Sentence Story

As A sit here, typing a very very very very long sentence I begin to think of everything; how did andrew break his arm;
"Shoving it down someones throat" he says but i don't believe him and Karen what the here is she even doing here, who could've possibly let her in, certainly not me, and I think I want sushi today for lunch because im just in a sushi kind of mood; I wonder what Andrew's life is like with one arm, he can only open things with his mouth and hands, sad his life must be; He is getting defensive actions need to take place, maybe I can interject with a song, it would seem andrew is blocking out my song by saying la repeatedly, let us take note of how many times
" La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La La " he says.

Tech Support Anthony Harley Ver.

Posted by Anthony Harley in Storytelling - Chase on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at 12:16 pm
One day I was over zach's house playing video games. The game in particular was Fable 3 and I was playing as an evil ruler. My characters name was The Evil Blue Chicken King because I went around in a chicken suit that was dyed blue. I killed almost all of the villagers with my gun. It just so happened to be named the OrphanMaker9000. It was named that because kids can't die in this just their parents. To combat this I decided to build factories and repeal the child labor law so they all have to work there. I also turned the orphanage into a brothel to prevent further kids. Anyways after that I wanted to go to sleep and when I am over I use an air mattress, but the problem was that the batteries died in the pump. Keep in mind its like 4 in the morning and I am already delirious but I decide to try blowing it up myself and 1 and a half hours in and the bed isn't even 1/15 of the way there. Now I'm light-headed and angry and refuse to believe the batteries are messed it.
"It must have been a tech issue" I said
So I called Evett and she didn't take the call too well.
"TEEEEEEEEEEECCCCCHHHHHH SSUUUPPPPOOOORRRRTTTT" I yelled in a zombie like groan.
"Anthony what the hell do you want its 4 in the morning"
"Evett the air mattress pump is broken I need tech support"
At that moment Evett hung up and Zach was angry that I had called someone but I wasn't satisfied I need support.....Badly. So I called my friend Cornelia and got the same greeting. At that point Zach took my phone from me and I passed out on the floor. Great night.

Q2 BM

Posted by Anthony Harley in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, January 21, 2011 at 1:15 pm
There was a problem uploading so my reflection is in the following paragraph and a link to my doc is here.

The reasons why I chose all of these bill are:
  1. They all are important to me
  2. The outcomes stood out me
  3. It's extremely helpful
  4. It's extremely disadvantageous
They are in no particular order, it is just what popped into my head and things I searched online. All in all it was an interesting benchmark where I get to share my opinions on laws and what impacts me negatively and positively and I am very happy with this.

Family Based Visa Application

Posted by Anthony Harley in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, December 17, 2010 at 12:15 pm
Stephanie and I looked into how to get a vise however there are so many different ways that we just narrowed it down to a family based visa.
  1. Find out if you are eligible
  2. Fill out ds165 form
  3. Wait for visa with your visa number
The entire thing as actually a simple process. On top of that its really short so I don't see a reason why anything needs to be changed. Filling out the form was really easy and not complicated at all however figuring out if you are eligible is a bit wierd. Some of the classifications that you might fall under are hard to understand so it gets complicated based on relations. Even more so for status like marriage or a job.

Timothy Ubuntu

Posted by Anthony Harley in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 7:55 am
Anthony Harley                                                  D-band                                    11/8/10

Timothy Ubuntu came from a family of computer programmers, and it’s fair to say that he has loved computers since birth. On his 4th birthday he asked for his computer to be able to run emacs so he would be able to program like his dad. You see, his dad was a website developer and computer programmer, but his mom didn’t do anything that fancy; she repaired computers. However, she was damn good at repairing and you would never be able to see someone defrag a hard drive that fast. Back to Timothy, his family wasn’t exactly the wealthiest so they had dial up and every time they would get online to do something or show Timmy the beauty of the internet the series of high and low beeps of AOL ate away at him. When he was finally on it for the first time he was amazed at what he could see, what he could do, what he could have, and especially what he could give.

He loved music and games but didn’t have money to buy them so he would play online games. Free cheap ones because he couldn’t find the games he wanted online. Timmy eventually was overwhelmed by the lack of interesting games on the internet after he thought so highly of it and starting bawling.

“Why? Why can’t I find anything fun? I thought it was all supposed to be here?” Timmy cried. Shortly afterwards Timmy’s father walks into the room and says

            “Timmy Why are you crying?”

“Because I can’t find anything online. I can’t find games or music and I hate it”

“Well son it pains me to see you like this so I will teach you the ways I get everything”.

From that moment on Timmy put all his effort into researching one man who his dad told him about, Sean Parker, the man who founded napster and broke the record companies.

Sean Parker showed that you will never be able to stop the free flow of information while there are people out there will to do the same things he did and napster allowed to upload and download music for free. He was sued for creating it and charged hundreds of thousands of dollars but that didn’t scare Timmy so he looked up ways to download programs where we wouldn’t get caught. He asked his-self what would the safest way be to get music and games, and that’s when his dad told him about torrent files. It is one of the biggest peer to peer sharing types imaginable and he noticed his dad already had a program called bittorrent on their computer and just like that he began. He started downloading torrent files and running them and the speed at which we would get files put him and shock.

            “Its really free” Timmy asked.

“Yes Timmy it is free and it’s there”.

The only problem with this is that if the country cracks down they can still get your IP address and sue you like they did Sean Parker. They already sued one lady for uploading music to websites and was fined 220,000 dollars. Inconvenient as it may be, that day, December 4th is when the Prop-IP act was first introduced to congress. The Prop-IP act was to increase the penalties for trademark and copyright infringement. Timmy and his dad knew that if it got passed they could be made examples of and forced to be gross sums of money. Sadly in the next 5 months it would only get worse. It had traveled through the house and the senate so quickly and had an astonishing voter turnout. It got passed 410 to 11. 5 months after that it was passed, and on 10/13/2008 George Bush signed the bill and it was passed. Interestingly enough people who torrented files have not been caught and everyday Timmy wonders about how effective the bill was and will download more files for old times sake.
