Khadijah Fofana Capstone

Posted by Khadijah Fofana in Capstone - Hirschfield - Wed on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 11:57 pm

Earlier in the year, I walked into a middle school called Tilden Middle School. But prior to that I was looking to start an all girls program but could not find anywhere to start. I called one of my old teachers from Tilden and told her to please set up a talking session for me, basically to promote what I was intending to do. After getting her to do so, I was able to talk to about thirty five girls, and about twenty of the girls give me their names and phone numbers. Due to not having no where to meet, we started meeting every Saturday in my living room. At the first meeting I told the girls if they wasn’t too interested then they should not waste my time. After the third meeting I was left with about seven girls. Towards the end of the program, which was two Saturdays ago I was left with only four girls. We went to poetry slams, Skating, Parks and other plans didn’t fall through. I was able to take some of the girls to PYPM workshops. I have never felt so good about something. The text messages they would send me after each time we did something was heart warming. I want to be a teacher in the future and my intentions were to get close to young teens, mostly girls so that I can help them change the world's perspective on women. I learned that building a sisterhood takes a lot but with dedications and motivation anything is possible.

Nixon, By Robin. "Adolescent Angst: 5 Facts About the Teen Brain."LiveScience. TechMediaNetwork, 08 July 2012. Web. 28 Jan. 2012

I read about how one can interact with teens, and how young teens mind works. because as a mentor, you have to be able to understand what triggers emotions in your mentees This website does a really good job at explaining why teens do a certain things. The website talks about how an adult can be careful so that their mentees don’t think something else besides the truth about their relationship. There is also science involved in this in a sense, and the website helps me under how I as a mentor can deal with a lot of the things kid go through.

"Start Nonprofit." Sisters Of Hope. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2011

This website help me find out how to start a program. how to get connections and how to also get people to take you seriously. It teach you how to talk to sponsor and how to make your organization a non profit. With this sources there were picture showing me how to also take picture so that they can reflect a lot without words. Some advices I got from the website was alway be professional when it comes to trying to get notice or when it come to young adults taking you seriously

Soroptimist International Of The Americas • 1709 Spruce St., Philadelphia, Pa 19103-61. Designing a Club Mentoring Program for Girls (n.d.): n. pag. Web.

This website was a worldwide perspective on how women in general needs to be mentored.  it talks a number of different programs, such as Soroptimists which strive to improve the lives of women and girls in our community today communities and throughout the world. Basically what the site said  is the Soroptimists use their time, talents and financial resources to enrich their communities and improve the lives of women and girls.  I though know that a mentoring program for girls is a way of achieving  goals interesting because it helped realize my whole purpose of doing this This website was useful because it had a kit that helps with everything I needed to know about mentoring.

"Benefits of Mentoring." Benefits of Mentoring. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

This website talks about the benefits of mentoring and it also explain very well what it metor mean. The website is basically saying that  a mentor is a caring, adult friend who devotes time to a young person. and that Although mentors can fill any number of different roles, all mentors have the same goal in common to help young people achieve their potential and discover their strengths. it also say that mentors should understand they are not meant to replace a parent, guardian or teacher. A mentor is not a disciplinarian or decision maker for a child. I think is was interesting to see them say “A mentor's main purpose is to help a young person define individual goals and find ways to achieve them. Since the expectations of each child will vary, the mentor's job is to encourage the development of a flexible relationship that responds to both the mentor's and the young person's needs.” I think that helps me understand my goals.

"Coaching and Mentoring For Dummies." :Book Information. N.p., n.d. Web. 10Jan. 2011.

Using this book, I found simple ways to mentor my “clients”. Of Course they are important to me, and I want them to feel special. I don’t want to just have them sit down and talk, I want them to feel free to talk about anything, and guide them to the right path. If you don't know what to say, why say anything at all? This book will help me to think about what I should say in certain circumstances, and they give me ideas on how i should go about, in certain ways.

"Definition of Mentoring - Benefits of Mentoring." Definition of Mentoring - Benefits of Mentoring. N.p., n.d. Web.15 feb. 2010.

This website allows me to actually know what the word “mentoring means’. yes, i am familiar with the term because it relates back to guidance. However, the true meaning of mentoring will allow me to actually show the students I am mentoring what it will mean to them. Actually getting to know something and someone is more than just a  job titile, its feeling that passion and connection between the mentor and the student. It allows them to actually feel wanted and special, and feel like they have a special someone who actually wants to lead them somewhere. They have role models...not “mentors”.

Edmonds, Molly. HowStuffWorks. HowStuffWorks.com, n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

Teens will always have problems, they will alway think that people are coming at them, or attacking them. So I have learn that always keep in mind what you say to youth. Also watch tones when speaking, there’s a difference between making them understand that you care vs making them feel attack. Science shows that many teens are usually not very stable in the mind, so when you don’t remind them of something they tend to just let rocks fall on them without moving. This website was very useful and had very good information about the nature of teens.

"The Mentor Experience: Open Your Heart and Home." YouTube. YouTube, n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

This is an excellent way to show how i really want to mentor people. i want to have a lasting experience, not something people dread coming to. I want them to be excited that they are coming to me for the meetings and that they can actually lookup to me. The whole reason for me to mentor or guide someone to the right path, is because i’ve had plenty of mentors when people who are supposed to be there for me, weren’t. I want people to know that they will always have someone, even if it does look like no one. Leaving  a mark in someone's heart is very deep, whether it was negative  or positive, and i want to leave a lasting impression on someone.

Mentoring Kids Pays off." Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

“I can’t begin to count the number of times in my life I’ve had to get up in front of a group of people in a board room and present information. But standing up in front of a group of students in a classroom is totally different. Especially when you know those young people need you and are listening intently to every word you are saying.“this is a wonderful example of how people feel when they need mental support. People need mentoring for numerous reasons, and they are all diverse. From big to small, everyone needs encourage, and I am willing to offer my best, and offer my helping hand to them.

"Rebuilding A Broken Generation." Teens Of America -. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

This is just a website about teens in America in general. There are a lot of other people trying to build the teens in America back up and I think this website does a really good job at point out the problems and how we can fix them. I have learn from this website that everything is not going to be possible, but that it will take patient and time. I am willing to put the time and effort. The website states that kids need to know that you have the time for them and you have the time to care.

Plantains Recipe:

⅓ SALT

Plantains

Oil or water

Process:

Peel the Plantains

slice it small

add salt

Wait until the oil is hot then put the plantain in there

or if using water just put it in water and let it boil.

when turn reddish which would be about 8 to 9 mins take out and enjoy!

Analysis:

Plantains are a type of bananas, they are not bananas but are a type of bananas. My family has been eating plantains for many years because of one poverty at the time and also because they pretty delicious. Plantains are appetizer but could be also be a meal if you add other things like fish to it. Plantain are very healthy because according to foodworks “Fat free, cholesterol free, sodium free, an excellent source of vitamins A and C and a good source of potassium.” Despite the fact that plantains are really healthy food when my family makes it I think they take away all that. They put way too much salt and too much oil, and I was thinking maybe instead of using vegetable oil maybe use some coconut oil. As far as boiling it, that would work because you are just adding a little salt and that would still make the food good for you. Now the plantains could also be fried with red oil, red oil is healthy and could make the plantain more healthy. To make plantains is not very expensive, it is a poor food to make. The food from what I know definitely started in Africa, and as slave trade it then move up here.

According to food works “Plantain found its way into Madagascar from Malaysia and India through trading Asian merchants and by Arabs during the Trans-Saharan trade boom. Plantain and banana trade along with yam and other food crops became a very important factor in the wealth, prosperity and rapid expansion of the Bantu Kingdom of central and southern Africa around 1500 AD. Up till date, plantain is still a major and popular staple meal across Uganda and the rest of the former Bantu region.” The food cost about four dollars. This food has traveled 3450 miles from Africa to south America. Compare to fast food this food is actually a lot cheaper so therefore no excuses as to why it couldn’t be purchased. Growing this food could be a lot better, but if it is grown in the farm they may process it too much, there are also organic plantains that you can definitely look into.

Self Reflection:

The unit has been very interesting because we have been talking about food, I can relate to this because I love food and everything about food. I have a very major role in the food system because in order for something to change I feel like everyone should feel like they can do something so with that being said I am consider myself to be a very big part of the food system.  I definitely feel like big companies uses advertising to make everyday people buy their product and since I am a everyday people I think I could start to watch what I buy or consume. Since we talked about obesity this quarter and talked about about 66% of the U.S population is obese. That a pretty big percentage. Watching the the ted talk also gave us a lot information on how school lunch isn’t even healthy. Something that was very major was the japanese obesity was only 6% compare that to U.S was very strange. Another statement that was very interesting was when we talked about “If you are not hungry enough to eat an apple then you are not hungry”. I am definitely going to change my food choices, because this situation is serious and I don’t think we are taking actions as a society. I have come to a conclusion that healthy food is the way, but that also remembering that even “Healthy food” is also processed but as a consumer I just have to be aware. This was a very good unit, I enjoyed everything about it and I am looking forward to actually getting more knowledge on what I a consume.

When looking for this book you will mostly find it in the fiction collections, Either you are at the library or the store. The book is a short novel that will inspire you in many ways. The first thing that might come to mind might be, why is there an upside down dog on the cover, The upside down dog happens to be the most popular cover for the book. The author has many different covers for the book. He has one with a garden fork going through a bloody dog. You might do what we all call “Judging a book by it’s cover”. That’s okay but this book is worth more than the cover. You will only understand the cover if you take out the time to read this book. If you love mystery novel, then you will love this book. Just because the book is called The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time doesn’t mean that it is all about a dog, It’s more than just a book about a dog, This book teach you how “Acceptance of others helps one find self-acceptance as well, problems can be an opportunity to learn and grow, a person can turn a weakness into a strength” and this all depends on how you interpret the book, one might say that they get a different message, and that is totally fine. It’s all about how you can turn the story into your own life experiences. The book is for adults, But if you think that you can handle it then you are more than welcome to read it. I promise that it will be one of the best book you have ever read.

The author of this book is named Mark Haddon. Mark Haddon is 51 years old, and was born 26 September 1962 in Northampton England. He went to a school called Uppingham School and studied English. After college Mark Haddon was occupied with many different jobs. One  the jobs included working with disabled people, and creating illustrations and cartoon for magazine and Newspaper companies. Mark Haddon also worked with autistic individuals as a young man. After many years mark decided to write his first children's book, which was called Gilbert’s Gobstopper. After writing this book he also wrote a several other children's book. He also wrote some Screen plays for BBC television. In 2003 He won the “Whitbread Book of the Year Award” One of his best selling book called  “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” He won many awards after that as well. One of the things that made Mark such a sensational writer was because he wasn’t only a writer, He was an artist. So therefore his work was very catchy. He try to fit his own personal life, and personal experiences  into the stories that he wrote. You will definitely see that as you read his work.

Mark Haddon have a very unique style of writing. One example is while reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, I notice that the book Christopher was writing is the book that we actually have in our hands. Well it will be in your’s if you decide to read this Amazing book. Since the novel that I read was the novel Christopher was writing, it made me feel closer to him. For same that reason, I felt like I was looking at the world from his perspective. The fact that we are  positioned in his shoes make it easy for the reader to understand the Novel.

I personally enjoyed reading this book because I believe that no matter what your conditions are you should still be treated “normal.” I mean is “normal” even normal, how do we know what’s normal and what’s not. Is there such thing called “Normal” This book got me thinking otherwise, Now I have a different perspective on how we look at people that have disabilities. I believe that no one can tell you what you are capable of. Christopher had autism so therefore he got treated differently. Christopher is someone you can look up to, because no matter what he didn’t let his obstacles get in the way of his success. I highly recommend this book. If you like  Daniel Isn't Talking, or  When I Was 5 I Killed Myself you will definitely enjoy this book, and even if you haven’t read the two book listed above you can still enjoy reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

These are some quotes that I really liked. My mind personally works like this sometimes.“But in life you have to take lots of decisions and if you don't take decisions you would never do anything because you would spend all your time choosing between things you could do. So it is good to have a reason why you hate some things and you like others.” My other favorite quote was “I like it when it rains hard. It sounds like white noise everywhere, which is like silence but not empty.” Read this book, and you will find many more amazing quotes like the one above. To finish up, I want to introduce you to a quote by one of my favorite writers, ― Mahatma Gandhi “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”

How does writing help you connect?

Posted by Khadijah Fofana in English 3 - Rami - D on Monday, October 21, 2013 at 2:17 pm
Writing helps me connect in many ways. I personally feel like writing takes me to places I have never been before, writing is the life in my pencil, writing is the soul of my life, without writing I would feel like I have no one to talk to. Writing makes it easy for me to write my feelings down, There are certain things in my life that no one knows besides, my pen, my book and me. I feel like without writing I would never have the courage to speak up. I have a voice in writing, Because I can see someone else reading what I wrote, and It don't matter if it is unanimous, but at least I know that my voice is out there somewhere on a piece of paper. Especially living in a society where people think constantly run their mouth. But if you write your problems down, without showing to anyone you will be okay. Writing has the power to build back up your broken pens. Writing always accepts you for who you are. It's doesn't judge what you have to say. Writing connects me to many misconceptions in life.

Humanities Final Portfolio 2013

Posted by Khadijah Fofana in English 2 - Block on Monday, June 10, 2013 at 10:29 am

This year in History and English has been a very fun and challenging learning experience for me. In the beginning of this school year, I was very solid in writing. I walked in to Mr. Block’s class with the mindset of I will not succeed in this class, in fact I will slack and not even really try. Even though I didn't really mean what I was saying, but I was just finding a way to stay comfortable in my own skin. “Originality is pushing yourself beyond personal boundaries.”

English is where I grew the most as a writer. I improved by verifying the words that I use for description. I also learned that being descriptive precise does a lot to how writing sounds. In the beginning of this year my descriptive writing level was okay, but now I’m able to write in a different perspective. From Multiple projects in this class has helped me learn how to use dialogue and write in my own voice, and express my own opinions through proof or by supporting my statements. This is a paragraph from that Project “Wait let me try myself, Heart beating faster the sound of family laughter and conversations. I can barely pedal, trying my hardest not to make a fool out of myself, but in my mind that was the only thing I knew was going to happen. Teenagers disparaging me. Sounds of whispers, bubble gum, and the feeling of humiliation. I always knew that I could do whatever I put my mind to so I kept trying. Every Time I fell off I pretend I was doing it all of on purpose.” Check out the actual Project by clinking here for this assignment we had to write a descriptive essay about a moment in our childhood.

“Language is a common barrier to relationships”. Over the course of English we ran across a project and we had to write a language biography, It was very challenging. You got to write about our experiences with language. That’s also what makes learning fun and challenging in Mr. block’s class, because we took the challenge to write about something that was important to us and had fun doing it. “ Language can make your identity glow or make it look trashy” This is a quote from my Language biography. here is my language bio.https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/images/cleardot.gif

The poetry unit was my favorite unit. I took the descriptive writing and all the other awesome writing style I learned this year to come up with incredible poems. We wrote our own creative pieces. This is my poetry Wikispaces. The best part was studying a famous poet. I studied Amiri Baraka. I got to learn so much about his writing style and his life in general. He was almost a politic, and he stood up for his voice. Click here to learn more about this famous poet.

In history we learned a lot about Humans/ environmental, Religion, Age of Exploration, Renaissance, Playwright, Revolution, and Industrial Revolution/ Modern day capitalism. I had an amazing time doing every single one of these assignments. One of my favorite projects was when we had to write three monologues about the Keystone Pipeline and the effects it was going to have on people. I wrote as the soil in Camden, A girl and a wooden pipeline. This is a quote from one of my monologues “ I knew that I would be developing, because The Governors think that everything has to be developed.” here is the assignment here is also a video to this assignment. It was so fun doing this project, some might say “well what are you learning by just writing monologues?” and I’ll say they weren't only monologues; we actually had to research facts about the keystone Pipeline. We read articles, and a lot more other interesting stories. We made sure we had our facts right.

“Religion does not equal culture.” In our religion unit, we were able to explore different types of religion and their sacred books. It was very different to understand other people’s religion, because learning just your own isn’t being knowledgeable but being flexible enough to learn others is being wise. In some religions for example Christianity, is often mixed up with culture. That was always my curiosity; I just always wanted to know why this often happened. As we got farther in the unit, we received an assignment where we had to pick a religion that we weren’t familiar to make a brochure, and since I was so concern about the whole “Religion does not equal culture.” I decided to approach some of that issue in my brochure. Here is that Assignment.

This assignment was a journal entry from over the year. I would just like to share this with you, Here and also one of my favorite quotes from the journals we wrote over the years. is “Trying to relocate you from every angle that you was never there to form.”

This is not all of the work we did, this is just some. I don’t think anyone would have the time and patient to write and list all of the assignment we have learned and did this year, I never knew it would be possible for me to learn so much in a small amount of time. I am convinced that anything is possible. All thanks to Joshua Block for making me such open minded and a wise writer. I feel like my brain has expanded ten times larger. I am grateful to have you as my 10th grade English and History teacher.

He close his eyes and no stories cam to him,
Life to him had became a dark closet to him,
he has became oblivious to his surroundings,
he make the wrong decisions because his decision are blinded by his ego,
he has no hope because he can't seem to let the go and move on,
you need to wake up,
so now close your eyes and let the story come to you.

Language has feelings.

Every city states, country, continent has their own unique ways of speaking, or communicating. Language is a big part of our day's. It has always been something that brought us closer. Language has has feelings too, It would tie all together if we let them have their bonds, but for those of us who actually let it happen, know how it feel like to have a united tongue in your mouth. Language can make your identity glow or make it look trashy.

 Language has feelings too

September 1, 2008, was a new beginning for my family and I. It was our first day In America, This was my family’s dream, that one day they’ll see the status of liberty and be able to tell people back home, how awesome America is. It was a dream come true for them, but not me. You might be asking why was that??? Well you’ll find out as I get more and more into the story.

I somehow knew that Mandingo was not too relevant to Americans. Since I was in Africa I always had this thought of why can’t other people be able to speak their languages or express themselves, without being laughed at in America “Land of the free”.  I mean at least that’s what we was told, and this feeling of I will not be accepted because of the way I spoke or what language I knew was going to be a problem. As I got use to the society I saw was I was afraid of.

Right before we landed, the flight attendant was announcing things, and the only phrase I remembered him saying was “Welcome to America”. The plane landed and since we were at the back of the plane, we weren’t out until ten minutes later. After waiting for the others to get off, my family started to get off; I was the last person to get off. When I walked out I started to look everywhere, with a very confuse and slightly happy smile on my face. Everything was beautiful and I was happy because my family was having the moment of their lives. Then we walked to the front desk where we got our bags, and paper work done. The person behind the desk was speaking English to us, and none of us, could understand anything that came out of her mouth. Therefore they found us a Translator who can speak both Mandingo and English. He did an awesome job at translating what my mom was saying. At the moment every English word sounded like gibberish to me. I wish I knew what they were saying. Most importantly I wish I knew what the flight attendant was saying, until this day, I’m still curious of what was said.

What most people in our Country don’t realize is that English is not the only language that you can use to communicate with others. A language like Mandingo would be totally irrelevant to Americans, most people would think that well since Mandingo is not a well known language and doesn’t break or make us, how about not worry about such thing in our country,  which make sense when you’re thinking of what language will get you more jobs and things like that. It was very shocking when I found out that “America” Has a Mandingo speaker that can actually translate Mandingo to English. It was a sign of respect.

The night before first day of school was so exciting for me, I was all set for first day of school. I had my uniform whitch was blue tops and khaki bottoms, and a new sneaker I didn’t care about the brand because it didn’t matter to me back then. I tried to go to sleep early, so that the night can go fast, and apparently it did. In the morning I got up and rushed in the shower, after getting ready my dad took me to school along with my brothers and sisters. I was happy and I thought it was going to be good day, but it turned out I was wrong...
Sitting in the office for about twenty minutes, waiting for somebody to come get me so that I can go to class. After walking up the stairs, and  walked into my new class. My heart was beating very fast like I had just ran a million miles, and if I’m not recording this wrong, I almost peed on myself. I felt the negative energy killing my vibe. I was convinced that I was nothing but a stupid African girl who is going to be bullied. I knew it, I had the feeling. I was up front nervously moving around as the teacher introduced me to the class, and said “be nice to her she’s from Africa and doesn’t know anyone.” Then she assumed I was from Mali and introduced me to a girl named Nahawa. I had to sit with Nahawa, even though I was not Malian I just pretended She was right because I couldn’t say anything to save my life. I sat there and Nahawa and I spoke Malian, I can only understand because I used to live with people that spoke Malian. As the day go by, every time Nahawa and I speak the students in my class starts to laugh and make sounds and noises, trying kill our vibe. They personally had me, because I was very mad about what they were doing, they tried to make fun the language. I was sitting there thinking to myself, do you know what you are dealing with, I’m not quite. Not knowing how to speak English didn’t mean that I was stupid, or anything. But that’s the message they got from me not being able to say anything.
Some students in America, don’t know what diversity of language means, they just assume you are stupid because you don’t sound like” OMG what is for dinner” Or ayo my nigga what was the homework” Which makes it hard for people like me because not only that I was struggling from language problems, but it also became a form of bullying. Language doesn’t make you smart it  just make you different, and to me if they didn’t think that being different was a good thing, I guess I didn’t want to be in school, nor be bilango. I started losing my identity because I felt  like I could not be cool speaking a language other than English, and when I spoke to Nahawa from that day on I whispered, Not because I was scare but because I wanted to be accepted and cool, but now I can speak any language at anytime, with any accent.

History

Posted by Khadijah Fofana in World History - Block on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 9:52 pm

Over the last couple of weeks, my class has been focused on the keystone pipeline project. We as students all had an amazing and unique view of how we can get our massages across in a greater idea. We were asked by Our History teacher to write 3 monologues. As writers we all know that if we were ask to only write one, then the process of getting our points across, would have been a little too to easy. We believe that if you get your point across, not knowing what to say because you have loss all your ideas on the other one’s, and you are still manage to make sense of what you are talking about, then to us, that’s a very good definition of mastering and know what you are talking about. I wrote 3. I was the Pipeline itself, a 7thgrader and the soil. It was fun to find differ ways to come up with such creative pieces. I hope you enjoy.

I will fight for my rights.

Life gets hard as time goes by. I always knew this day would come, I knew that I was going to be a big part in this country, It all started when my ancestor wooden pipeline was created, 1865, in essence. I knew that I would be developing, because The Governors think that everything has to be developed. Like bye, your pushing it, is was never that serious.

I can feel all the pressure to the society, How everything is being “developed” according to the Head of states. It was always prophesied that I would be the topic of conversations. Later on in the years they develop domestic and international markets in a big way where they wanted to make things better so that they can get more benefit out of me. I loved all the attentions and all the fame. I loved the presidential debate, and the fact that I was center of attention?

I was a little too hype. But this was not what I wanted to be. I was concocted to help people and make life easier. My mission has failed because now they are using about 7billoin of the U.S.A poor people’s money. I will be the biggest and the longest pipeline ever built. According to my family history “The project, which would be the longest oil pipeline outside of Russia and China, has become a potent symbol in a growing fight that pits energy security against environmental risk, a struggle highlighted by last year’s oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico”. This is not my motive if I can help I would. But as for now it is what it is I hope they will not build me and if they do I am asking everyone who will be effect by me to please forgive me.

The people of Camden.

It’s that time of the year I receive seeds and crops from all parts of the United States. Farmers, gardeners, and non-profit people provide me with my needs. They give me their only hope so that I can grow them. They Moisturize, and feed me with water. Some people even go all out and get some special minerals and put them all over me. The famer treats me with respect and they show that is an honored to be in partnership with me. The famers of this town are the only reason why I can produce.

I have always loved helping people out here because they are very grateful. It was about last week I received an old farmer who came from Canada, he had an old friend of mine. Her name Shovel, she told me that she was just used to dig and plant down Canada. He when on and on about how she over heard, her masters speak on the behave of the Governors. They were going to upgrade the country but she never finished telling me because he had to go. her last words were you will not be here forever. I mean if this is their decision then there nothing I can do about it. But before this end I will like to speak about the time and what I have done for this place.

I am very important to them. I was a lot of help in all kinds of way, economically, house issues and even safety. So now is not the time to turn this fine little town we call Camden over to the hands of the amateurs. They don’t know what it takes to build a nation. So they’re trying to manipulate the brain of these good citizens, so that they can "so call” provide a lot of jobs for the people. The people of this town trusted me with their properties.

Now everything is clear I understand what Shovel was telling me. What she was saying is that they were building a pipeline all threw the U.S. I’m afraid, because I know that it is going to effect me in a big way. Couple years ago there was oil spill. It killed all the trust the people of the town had in my kind. These people were left empty some of these people whole life depended on me. Camden has always been poor towns were, people depends on the food they grow, without a good and healthy soil there is no Camden.

Hope

Mother do you even know what this means? (Pause) To you, to me to the land of the free. This is my home, and my comfort zoon; I don’t know what I will do now. I was born and raised in  Nebraska, I started day care down here and also elementary school. It is cruel and arrogant that the United States is breaking their promises. What happened to “land of the free”, or “is it free of the land”. Did that even make any sense? That is exactly how I feel. The fact that America holds false promises and false hopes is bothering me.
I dreamed that one day I would make it out of  here and be able to come back to a place that I once called home. Mother are you listening? (Pause) Mother this is not fair I am not moving, I refuse to leave, my friends and my school. (crying) You know what, I will send a letter to the Mayor. Dear Jim Suttle
I am currently an 7th grade student at New foundation charter school, I heard that I was suppose to be moving because of a construction, They are suppose to be building a pipeline from Canada and all threw the United States. I don’t even have to tell you, about it because you know. I’m asking for your help, my mom is poor and we live in a project, who knows if we’re be able to find a home like this one. Sometimes you have to put yourself in other people’s shoes. The only reason why you are able to go back and help out in your community is because you yourself have a place call home.
Since my mother and I heard about the good way of making things better, she has not been eating or saying anything for days. Who knows if she’ll die from worries? Not only that I am losing my home, but I am also losing my life. My mother is the most important person to me, she hasn’t even spoke to me in days. How would you feel? If my mom dies I am killing myself.

Sincerely: From one of us who cares.

Descriptive essay: The struggle!!

Posted by Khadijah Fofana in English 2 - Block on Friday, September 28, 2012 at 10:32 am

On a hot sunny day, it was about 90 degrees outside. I was in the house all day lying down bored on the black, comfy sofa and with soft pillows surrounding me, flicking through channels and relaxing. I stood up tired, exhausted, and didn’t feel like getting bothered at all.  I was trying to go to the bathroom, and then I heard the front door open. It was loud and noisy. I knew it was my mother by the smell of her strong perfume. So, I got up slowly and ran to the bathroom because every time she walks in the house, she starts to annoy me. I heard her footsteps from the bathroom. While I stand in the bathroom, as silent as possible, looking at the bluish wall, the smell of soup and the sound of the TV outside of the bathroom door. As I walk around the wet bathroom floor, frustrated to come out because I knew she would act like the same person I knew all my life, and that will be her always yelling. Five minutes later I heard call me. She was extremely angry.

(Khadi).  She sounded like she had a bad day. I excitedly opened the door, pretending I was happy about everything, and couldn’t wait for the so call family meting. The cool air touches my skin and the bright colored pink is what my mother was wearing. This is when everything started.

She angrily give me wet five dollar bill, I didn’t even know why it was wet but okay…she asked me to go to the store, as she walk up stairs I stomp my feet and got really mad, face frowned and eyes red. I hear a footstep coming back down.

My mother with a green shirt saying “oh yea don’t take your bike with you”, and I said but mom. She goes up the stairs and slam the door while she was going back up I heard her voice but in a smaller tone saying I’m not going to repeat myself. I didn’t feel like getting dressed I threw on my pink overgarment; I then put my green sneakers with a black and white kemar. I headed on out. I didn’t listen I walked outside with the bike.

Wait let me try myself, Heart beating faster the sound of family laughter and conversations. Every Time I fell off I pretend I was doing it all of on purpose.

I was asked by my mother to sit down and relax for 30mins, so I watch running children’s, the sound of ice cream truck, mom yelling and boys who claims to be gang members. I waited the 30 minutes; I even counted down the last one minute. After the count down I rushed to the bike. I get on my bike and pedal slowly of the block. As I pedal passing by the police station I felt shy and somehow embarrassed. I then look down to the blackish gray concrete, was I seen Doritos, candy, and a pop eyes wrappers. I start to feel and wish I had some. As I get closer to the street I smelled chicken from the Chinese store, African food from the African restaurant close by. As the bike get slower I starts to feel my overgarment pull and I was confuse as for what was happening, I looked down and saw my overgarment stuck in the chins I tried to get up and I was stuck. I looked down and saw that the only way I could have solve the problem was to tear my garment and that’s what I did. I grandiloquently walked back home with feeling of regrets, and blaming myself was the best way to make myself feel better. Back on the block to sounds of the winds blowing the trees and kids sitting, and no ice cream truck. Everything was Calm. Until when my aunt Amina came with her precious daughter Aishah. Her Aishah started to cry, and all the other babies started crying, I was annoyed I got back on my bike and rode to the end of the block with a lot of audacity.

Babies crying, moms frustrated, and kids wearing colors that kept calm and me motivated. Green, red and grayish. Everything was good. I pit myself on the spot. I felt the need to stop the whole entire family to tell that I can ride a bike now; I had everyone’s attentions I knew I had to do something good. I felt sweat dripping, and my heart once again was my heart was beating faster and I felt like I was going to pop my tiny blood vessels in my forehead. I felt a lot of pressure. I rode to the end of the block then made a u turn on my way back down, I could see nothing but a blurry shirt running around so I knew I had to make sure, not to run the child over, trying to save the kid made me fall hard of the bike to the ground. Tears dripping, my knees were bleeding, hands all red, and my whole day became a disaster.
