Earthquake at Martinique Destroys Half of Port Royal

On January 11, 1839 a tragic earthquake hit the country of Martinique. It happened at 9:55 on in the Caribbean region. This tragedy affected the lives of many and destroyed much of the land around them. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8 and a focal depth of 33 kilometers.

This Earthquake caused around 700 people to die, and injured others. The 700 people that died was 

about half of port royal. The damage that was done was severe. Repairs cost about 14.5 million dollars. 

The earthquake had a longitude -61.099998 and a latitude of 14.4. The earthquake created ripple effects

that no one could have prepared for.
