My Favorite Benchmark

Posted by Darnell Sample in Statistics - Thompson on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 9:59 am

My favorite benchmark of the entire year was the first quarter benchmark where we had to go to the supermarkets. It was a group benchmark, and typically I don’t like group projects, however this one I made an exception for. I had three other group members who had the same ambitions as myself work ethic as I do. I had Ashley who was the organized and determined one, Evan who got his work done, and Marchella who understood the work, but had to push herself to actually do it.

Another reason why this was my favorite was because it was given to us back when everything was so easy and staright to the point. We had the basic: mean, media, mode, and range, Along with the quartiles, z-scores, and graphs like bar graphs and histograms. With the easy unit there was no wonder why I was able to so well on this benchmark. Thinking back now of course there are many things I would change. I hate that now I think about it because there is nothing I can do about now, but the opportunity may come up again if  I have something similar to this. Firstly I would chose a completely different supermarket with completely different items. The prices that I had before were either too close or the same price, and that didn’t give me much data to work with, challenging data anyway. Thinking back on it shows my reflection, wanting to change my store and items is my presentation, my group was my collaboration,  and the assignment was my inquiry and research. Oh look SLA’s core values.

My Benchmark

Reflection:
The most challenging thing about this project was finding the 10 topics, and finding something in the city that would relate to them without being redundant. For example with Security and terrorism, even though I only did security, if i was going to do them both there was a challenge of how i could differ the two. So the way I went about collecting the photos that I did take was discussing, and brainstorming with my peers at my table. We saw what we all had in mind, the differences, similarities and if it was the same how we could make them different. WIth our collaboration is made things a lot less difficult.
Among all of the images that I took I think it may be the photo of the Comcast center. I used it for the topic of energy since the building is "green". However in it you can see the second tallest building in the city, a building if I'm not mistaken also just went "green". With that being just one of the images I found it that Philadelphia has a lot of evidence of globalization, everyone is just blind, I was one of them before this project. A lot things in Philadelphia is from Philadelphia, and also benifets the rest of the world.

This is my 5 photo story of a 12 year old child in Japan. It describes how they just go to school, clean the school, go home, practice their religion then back to school the next day.

Q3 BM Collapse

Posted by Darnell Sample in Globalization - Laufenberg on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 12:00 pm
In this project I portrayed myself as a blogger who interviews officials from other countries over the internet about whether or not they will collapse.

Reflection:
The two countries I've chosen was Cambodia and Pakistan. Cambodia, located in south east asia, I've always been interested in however knew very little of them and Pakistan I've always seen in the news however didn't know why, so I wanted to see if they were on the brinks of collapse. Originally I was going to do a "Hard Ball" type presentation, however last minute I due to lighting situations, and me being very tired lately I've decided to do the "Sleepy kid" who skypes with officials from other countries.
My process of my project was simple, look up the information needed and rate it. Since I did an online blogger video I was able to make a script as I went to give it more of a "live" vibe to it. At first I used to the CIA factbook and that was no help to me in the beginning. Then I later went back to look at it again and it was a more than enough help for me when I had more patience to actually go through it, so it gave me more of a better ground for what I was looking for. It was like Ms.Laufenberg said "It's where you can start but it's not where you are going to end."
For this project we went through the five point framework related to collapse, which made it all the more simpler. Knowing what I was looking for in 5 easy steps made this benchmark a lot less complicated and easier to present. Thinking back now on this project I would change one thing, and the only mistakes I made and that was doing the wrong country. Instead of Cambodia I was suppose to do the country of Columbia from my current South American region. I am confident I was still able to portray everything correctly, however that is my only flaw.
