How art and engineering mix

Posted by Grace Karlen in Multi-Disciplinary Project · Block · Wed on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 12:02 am

For my Engineering Capstone, I wanted to explore the intersection between art and engineering - how engineering influences, and is built into art, and the artists that utilize engineering as a tool to further their creation. Researching the processes these artists use to create their various works - paintings, movies, mobiles, and sculptures made from all different materials - is such a tangible way to see how engineering skills can be applied in the everyday world, and used to make that everyday world extraordinary. Specifically, in my capstone, I decided to put together a book full of countless pictures, and visuals of these art pieces created by my favorite artists and even filmmakers, to display how the influence of engineering can be easily seen in various art fields throughout the world, spanning continents and decades.

Books: Funny in Farsi by Firoozeh Dumas and Born Standing Up by Steve Martin

In today's episode of It’s Always Funny in California, we discussed the memoirs Funny in Farsi by Firoozeh Dumas and Born Standing Up by Steve Martin. The book Funny in Farsi details Firoozeh’s life, and her experiences of growing up as an immigrant, learning to love her culture, her family, and more. Born Standing Up discusses Steve’s life, both through his jobs in comedy, and the quieter parts of his life that before now were left unknown. Through our readings, we found many interesting sections, plots, and characters that we further explored in the podcast. Today, we discussed the themes present in both, the styles of storytelling, the use of characterization and more! We hope you enjoy it!

Macbeth Tarot Cards- Grace Karlen and Alonso Lai

Posted by Grace Karlen in English 1 · Giknis · Y Band on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 11:53 pm

Alonso and I created Macbeth themed tarot cards for our Macbeth creative project. We did this through studying the practice and concepts behind tarot, applying the meanings associated with the cards to motifs, significant ideas, plot, and characters from Macbeth. This can be seen in the original illustrations on all 78 cards, each of which show a character, scene, significant plot point, and more.

We decided to create tarot cards for a myriad of reasons. We initially thought of how tarot cards, and the idea that they can inform about a person’s future connected with Macbeth, and the themes of fate. We also found that the suits fit well with motifs in Macbeth, demonstrating core conconcepts of the book. Through reading about the meanings behind cards, we also found that many of them related to characters, relationships, and events in Macbeth. This includes a change in fortune, internal battles, ambition, intense relationships, and more. We also use the cards to expand upon our thoughts and connections to the book, such as illustrating a character’s role and beliefs through the images on the cards. We created all 78 tarot cards, with a full list of instructions that you can find here. Now, you can use these cards and ask questions so that you can be lead to your fate, just as Macbeth was! (We’re not responsible for poor decisions made due to tarot readings)
