Abstract

The project that I chose for my capstone is the blood drive. As many of us know every year there are blood drives here at SLA. This year I decided to continue that and organize the blood drive in order to help the people in need. In order for the blood drive to be a success I must learn as much as I can about the blood drive and what the blood is used for. During this I learned that blood is not something that everyone can just give to someone. Only certain kinds of blood can be used on other kinds of blood types. A blood can only be used on people with A type blood, B can only be used for B type blood and so on. However there is one type of blood that anyone can use. That is the O type blood, O blood can be given to anyone since it is compatible with any blood type. During this process I also researched many things about advertising which was pretty interesting. There are many ways to attract the attention of the people. Persuade the people to do things they don't really need to. But overall I have learned many things about blood, the red cross and even parts of marketing.

This was taken during the drive as people are getting ready to donate blood. There were seniors like me, some sophomores and even the assistant principal himself.

b.JPG

In the waiting room we see a senior who has just finished donating blood and is now relaxing and enjoying a light snack.

a.JPG

Here we have two hard working SLA students helping out with the drive. They are in charge of helping people who have yet to sign up actually sign up. They did a very good job and helped many people sign up in order to donate.

d.JPG

This bag of blood may not seem like much, but it will go and help out many people out there.

It may go to operations, transfusions, treating certain blood problems and many others.

(maybe vampires too)

e.JPG

Last but not least is a view from someone who is donating blood, aka myself.

It is quite a sight laying down and watching your blood being slowly drained out of you.

But this blood may save many lives, just the idea alone is worth it.

Bibliography

"Latest News." American Red Cross. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.redcross.org>. My project is to run a successful blood drive, know that I need someone who actually have the certification and the equipment to do so. When thinking of saving people and helping people in need, red cross was the first group that comes to mind. Not only do they save lives, they also do many other things to help people in need. So I knew I had to have them do the drive, as luck would have it, it seems that the previous person who did the drive also used red cross. This makes red cross the perfect group to colab with to do the blood drive.

"Share Your Power Donate Blood." Share Your Power Donate Blood. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.oneblood.org/>. In order to run a blood drive, I needed to know about blood first. All I know is that blood comes in different types O, A, AB etc. However there are many other things I didn’t know. One of which is that there is also O blood that can be used for anyone since the body will not reject it. This website gave me the information I needed to know about blood in nice short videos that is easy to understand.

"New Health Guide." Blood Type Chart. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.newhealthguide.org/BloodTypeChart.html>. After finding out about how there is O blood that can be used on anyone, I decided to do some light research on how rare each blood type is. And of course the best type of blood, O, is also one of the rarer blood type. However O+ will also work for many different blood types with the only downside being O blood type people can only take blood from other O blood people. THe good news is that 38.5% of the population has O type blood.

"Am I Eligible?" Am I Eligible? Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.bloodcenters.org/blooddonation/amieligible/>. I need to understand who and what do they need to donate blood to the Red Cross. Since I have donated before I do know that you need to be of age to donate or if you are under 16 you will need parent permission. Also blood sugar, pressure and such are also something that needs to be checked before one can donate blood. So this website was able to help me understand more about the requirements of donation. With that I can make much better announcement when it comes to telling people about the drive.

"How to Increase Red Blood Cells | MDHealth.com." How to Increase Red Blood Cells | MDHealth.com. Web. 30 Jan. 2015. <http://www.mdhealth.com/HowToIncreaseRedBloodCells.html>. Blood is not only important to people who gets in accidents, it is important for everyone. That is why we generally prefer to keep them inside our body most of the time. So to use something to get blood out of us, when it should stay inside, would cause some problems for the donor. So in order to keep the donor alive as well so they can donate again later, there needs a way to give them a quick boost. Things such as nuts contains a good amount of iron and can help the body to create more blood.

"Blood Transfusion." Why It's Done. Web. 30 Jan. 2015. <http://www.mayoclinic.org/testsprocedures/bloodtransfusion/basics/whyitsdone/prc20021 256>. With the blood that we will be getting from the blood drive, it can help many people. Blood transfusions isn’t only for people who lost lots of blood, people with certain illness also needs blood. There also also people with problematic blood and needs transfusions to keep their bodies working as well. Then there are some people who don’t really need the blood, but the plasma within the blood. However since plasma is in the blood so actual blood will be needed anyways. So blood is used in many way to keep people from being sick, anemic and most importantly dying.

"The Needle Phobia Page Fear of Needles and Needle Procedures." The Needle Phobia Page Fear of Needles and Needle Procedures. Web. 30 Jan. 2015. <http://www.needlephobia.com/>. In order to extract blood from the donors a certain tool is required. Yes there is the blood bags and stuff but the thing that actually goes in and gets the blood out is the needle. However there are people who are deathly afraid of needles so much so that there is a word for it. Trypanophobia is the fear of needles, and surprisingly 20% of all the worlds population have this. That means 2/10 potential donors won’t even bother just because there is a sharp pointy stick that have to poke them. So this website gives some of the reasons why people are afraid of it and with some luck a way or two to get around that.

Web. 30 Jan. 2015. <http://hr.fiu.edu/index.php?name=reward_recognition>. To me, the reason for giving blood is one it helps people and two it also makes me feel happy knowing that someone out there is alive because I give out some blood. But of course no one really knows what happened to your blood. It may just be sitting on a shelf for weeks without ever being bothered with. So can we make people who donate feel that feeling without showing them what the actual blood is doing? The plan is to give them a small reward such as a sticker. Even though the sticker isn’t really anything big, just the act of getting something should make the donor feel that “I made a difference and this sticker shows it” kind of feeling. This website explores the idea of giving and how and why it works.

"Donate Blood." How to Organize a Blood Drive. Web. 30 Jan. 2015. <http://www.communitybloodservices.org/db_organizedrive.php>. One can never have enough backups when it comes to doing something. Since my project is running a blood drive, I want red cross to do it since I very much trust them. However they may not always be able to do so. So having a backup in this case is very important just in case red cross is unable to do so. As I was search around I found that while red cross is the biggest when it comes to blood drives and stuff, they were not the only ones. Most places and hospital are able to host blood drives since they have the equipment as well as the requirements to do so. This website just shows an alternate way to a blood drive just in case red cross couldn’t make it.

"Blood Donation Documentary A." YouTube. YouTube. Web. 30 Jan. 2015. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6qHPvowGA8>. Since this is my first time actually running a blood drive, I have no idea what I will be running into. So in order to prepare for some of things that will happen, I decided to look for some form of documentary on blood drives. However even the all mighty internet doesn’t seem to give any and the only thing that does is youtube. While I don’t really think youtube is a good source, it is the only one I can find. So I looked through many video and found that it was more helpful then I thought it would. Some shows how the process of the drive works, what to do during the drive, how to prepare for the drive and other information that I might need.

Mistakes

Posted by Jian Zhang in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Friday, June 6, 2014 at 12:52 pm

In the year 2100, science has advanced much more then we believed. Cancer has been cured, a new clean energy was found, even body modifications are possible. Like science, humans have also evolved over the years. Some people are born able to move objects with their mind, create fire out of thin air and other odd abilities due to being able to use all 100% of their brain power. While many welcomes such changes, there are those who oppose such things fear that it will make them no longer “human.” The story follows the life of Eli, a orphan who was adopted by Al.

“Eli! It’s time for dinner!” Al shouted

“Ok...” Eli says quietly as he walked down the stairs

it has been about 6 months since Al has adopted Eli. During this time they have grown rather close. Al may drinks a lot and sometimes do and say things he don’t mean to, but he is still a kind person.

“So how was school?” Says Al

“I-it’s fun there... I made many friends...” Eli smiles nervously

“Thats good to know, you were so shy around people that I was worried” Al said with a kind smile

Eli just nodded his head and continued eating

“ah-” Al tries to continue the conversation but also ran out of topics

Seeing how there was nothing else to talk about, Eli and Al just keep eating in silence.

Buy the time they were done, it was already dark.

“Did you finish your homework yet?” Al asked while turning on the TV

“Not yet... I’m going to finish it now.” says Eli and he walked back up the stairs

As Eli go into his room, he could finally relax.

“What’s his problem, wanting to know everything you do”

“y-you’re wrong, he was just worried about me that’s all...”

“Worried? HA! He is just like the others, he only cares for you so he doesn’t get in trouble.”

“go-go away! He isn’t that kind of person!”

“You knew as well was I that I can’t, remember, I am a part of you... that will never change...”

After that, Eli’s other half finally went quiet. He is something Eli had to deal with for a very long time. Since as long as Eli could remember, he has been adopted and abandoned over and over again. All those who adopted him became afraid of him sooner rather then later. Sometime during cycle, he was born, a split personality that is the complete opposite of Eli.

“Al is a really kind person...” Eli whispers as he continues his homework.

Some more time past by and Eli has finished his homework. Just as he was about to go to sleep, he heard the TV downstairs still running. It was Al, he was still watching the late night news.

*Studies have shown that the birth rate of mutants have dramatically increased these past few years. Since the government still understand very little of these mutants, the government suggests to report to the local officials if someone you know is a mutant. Now back to you.*

Mutants... *hic* those crazy things should be locked away in a zoo! *hic* It was Al drunk on the couch talking about how much he dislikes mutants.

Eli walks down to Al and called out to him

“F-father?”

“eh? oh! El-*hic*i, did you sle*hic*ep yet? you have school tomorro*hic*w...”

“I’m going to sleep soon, you should too...”

Eli propped Al up against him and walked up the stairs with him

After reaching Al’s room, Eli tucked Al in and went back into the hallway where the sound of the TV was still clear.

“You know he will find out sooner or later.”

“I k-know that... but I think he will understand!”

“pft it’s amazing how you can trust him even after all the others you have trusted all betrayed you. Not to mention how much this one seem to hate people who has powers.”

“ya... but still! He may be afraid of them but if we just talk to him about it, he will understand right? r-right?

He was quiet. With that, Eli looked at the TV, turned it off and went into his room for the night.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“So! Everyone should bring these back and get them signed  by next friday! Those who don’t won’t be going on the trip so remember to bring them! Class dismissed!” Says Eli’s homeroom teacher.

“Hey! Eli!” shouted Kyle

“Are you going to go on the trip!? It looks really fun!” Kyle says grinning

“maybe, I’m not sure if father has time...” Eli says quietly

“Of course he will! It’s not like he can’t take a break from writing his book~”

“I don’t know... I really don’t want to disturb his work...”

“Oh you worrywart~, just go and ask him! Here! I’ll come with you!”

Saying that Kyle grabbed Eli by the arm and run off towards Eli’s house.

“Mr. Alex! Are you home!?” Kyle shouted at the house

“Ya! wait, wait just one moment!” Al said as a big clang came out of the attic

When Al go to the door he was covered in dust

“Were you cleaning Mr. Alex?” Kyle asks

“Ya, I wanted to clean the attic for sometime now.” Al smiles

“Welcome home Eli” Al says kindly

“I-i’m back” Eli said

Seeing this Kyle laughed again

“Oh Eli~ you are just as shy at home as in school!”

“Come on in you two and get some snacks” Al waves them in

After Kyle and Eli had their share of snacks, Kyle finally started talking about the trip

“Next month our class is going on a trip to the mountains! Can Eli go too!?”

“Of course he can!” Al exclaimed

“Can you come too?” Kyle asks

“Me? hum...” Al was deep in thought

“Maybe... I would have to wait and see... But if I’m free I’ll will definitely go.

“Hear that Eli? You can go too!” Kyle jumps up and down happily

“ya!” Eli replied

It was the day of the trip. The sun was shining, clear skies and a nice breeze blowing. It was the perfect day for a trip to the mountains.

“Everyone! Get to your groups! You will be camping with the people in your group here on the mountain for 2 days and 2 nights! Make sure you bring all the supplies with you! But most importantly don’t forget the emergency flare!. In case of any trouble or injuries, fire the flare like in the instruction booklet and a teacher will come and pick you up! Any questions!?”

The teacher looks around

“Alright! Go up this path and you will reach the campsite by dusk! Have fun and be safe!”

With that, the students, teachers and parents who can come all went up the road to the campsite.

“Awwww, so Mr. Alex couldn’t come?” says Kyle

“ya... he had to go to a meeting...”

“... Cheer up!” Kyle said with a grin

“My parents couldn’t come either! So we will just have to do this ourselves!”

This made Eli laugh a bit

With all the chatting they did, they reached the campsite before long

“Wow that was more tiring then I thought!” Kyle said gasping for air

“Y-ya... it seemed... so much... easier...” says Eli just as out of breath

They both laughed at how out of breath they are

Afterwards they started to build their campsite.

“Where should be build them Eli?”

“anywhere is fine with me..”

“Anywhere?” Kyle looks about

“How about over there!” Kyle said while pointing at a giant oak tree

“sure, that looks good”

“Alright! Let’s start building!” Kyle seemed very excited

By the time they were done it was already dark. So they had dinner and got really for bed.

“Hey Eli? you still awake?” Kyle said

“ya... I can’t seem to fall asleep.”

“you too? hehe, neither can I”

“So have you told your dad yet?...”

“no... no, not yet...”

“you should really tell him... it’s not right to keep him in the dark.”

“you’re right... but how can I tell him?..”

“I’m sure he will listen to you... I haven’t seen him as happy as he did with you since his wife died...”

“I’ll think about it... I really want to tell him too...”

“Kyle?” Eli looked at Kyle and Kyle seems to have fallen asleep already

“thank you...”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Hey! Eli! Wake up already!”

“how can you be so loud this early in the morning... *yawns*”

“hehehe, unlike you I’m not lazy” Kyle says smiling

“Oh by the way breakfast is ready! We have having biscuits and ham today! Also we are going to pick some mushrooms later! So make sure to bring your bag with you!” Kyle said cheerfully

“alright... *sigh*”

After  they finished their breakfast they gathered their things and went off to pick mushrooms.

“hey Eli”

....

“hey Eli!”

....

“...HEY!” Kyle shouted

“waah!?”

“Are you ignoring me!?” kyle says with her cheeks puffed out like a bruting child

“o-oh, nothing... I was just thinking.”

“? Thinking about what?”

“how I should tell father... seeming how much he hates mutants...”

“... it will be fine... I’m sure of it. If it’s you I think he will accept you...”

“thanks Kyle...”

just as Eli finished saying that the ground under them caved in

“AhhH!!!!!!!!”

The two of them fell into the river below

“KYLE! You alright!?” *cough cough*

“y-ya! Sort of! We need to, find a way up!”

“The sides are too steep! we can’t climb it!”

“Kyle! Grab my hand!”

Eli extends his hand and Kyle was able to grab on

What can I do!? Eli thought to himself, as he looked around he saw a branch that is just long enough to reach the river.

Eli closes his eyes and concentrates, on the branch. The branch started bending as if it were magic. The two was able to grab onto the branch and climb to safety.

“well, that worked” kyle said

“... but where are we now? We got washed quite the way down stream...”

“Hey I know!Let’s use the flares!” Kyle says as she dug reached for her bag, but her bag was washed away.

“...”

“... even if you had it, it wouldn’t work... it was wet and it wouldn’t light up anyways”

“w-what should *sniff* we do?” Kyle said with watery eyes

“wa- hey don’t cry! we’ll be fine! we didn’t get washed down that far!”

*sniff* “you sure?” Kyle said as she wiped her eyes

“...let’s go then or it will get dark before we get back to camp...”

“*sniff* ok.” says Kyle

So the two of them started to follow the river up, hoping to find the campground. But what they didn’t know is that even though it was a camping ground, there were areas that are fenced off to keep the wild animals out.

Eli looks up in the sky, it was already past noon.

“hey, Eli, do you really think we can get back before the teachers get worried?” Kyle questioned

“... I don’t knew... but we should be close right? We have been walking for some time now...”

Just as Eli said that, a sound came from a berry bush.

“hey! maybe it’s someone from class!” Kyle said as she ran towards the bush

But it wasn’t their classmate, it was a bear, and it was mad that Kyle disturbed it’s dinner.

The bear chased them all over the forest, but somehow they were able to lose the bear.

“well, now we are really lost...” Eli said as he looks around

“s-so now what? are we going to die in the forest?” Kyle started to get teary eyed again

“n-no! of course not!” Eli said trying to convince Kyle

“*sniff* you don’t sound very convincing...” Kyle said looking at Eli

“eh....”

As Eli frantically tries to calm Kyle down, he noticed off in the distance was a trail of smoke.

“Kyle look over there! There’s smoke!”

kyle looks up at where Eli was pointing and was smiling again

“What are you waiting for!? Come on!”

Kyle grabbed Eli and ran towards the smoke.

Luckily the smoke was from one of the camps who started to cook dinner.

When they got back the teachers were worried sick and the two got an long scolding from the teachers. But, since it was all over, they just patched the two up and let them finish the trip.

As the two was going home

“hey, kyle”

“hum?”

“I’ve decided to tell father about me...”

“really!? Thats great! He will surely understand!” Kyle smiled

“thank you...”

However the other side of him disagrees...

“Are you really that stupid?! Do you really think he will accept you, a freak like you?”

“... Al is a good person, I believe he will accept me... just like Kyle”

“You’re kidding right? Have you forgotten what we have been through? Were they nothing to you?”

“o-of course I remember... but just this once, just this once I wish to believe again...”

“Well suit yourself... I warned you.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Father, I’m home.” Eli said as he walked in.

But there was no answer

“Father?” Eli shouted, but there was still no answer

As Eli walked into the living room he saw a piece of paper

“Eli, if you are reading this, I will be gone for a week or so. There is food in the fridge and money in the drawer. My parents in the First District is sick, I’m going to visit them for a bit. Be good and look after the house ok? Oh and remember to do your homework and sleep on time!

From: Al”

“Hahahahaha, Just as you made up your mind, that guy isn’t here!”

“sh-shut up! I trust him! i’ll just have to wait a bit longer.. thats all...”

“suit yourself~”

But a week passed and Al did not return. Then two weeks, then three. The weeks turned into months and the months turned into years. Al never came back. There was no news, no letter, nothing about Al. He just vanished. Five years have passed since Al disappeared. Eli, was was only only twelve is now seventeen. During these 5 years, the villagers gradually found out that he was a mutant, but no one was really not against it. To find his father Eli thought to himself that he must become stronger. So he trained his body and his powers for 5 years. Then he wished to leave the 2nd District in search for his father.

“You better not disappear like your father Eli...” Kyle says with tears in her eye

Eli smiles “don’t worry, I will come back... thank you and everyone for these years. Without you guys I wouldn’t be here right now. So stop crying ok? I’m not that shy little kid anymore.”

Kyle nodded and joined the others waving goodbye.

As he left, the villagers bide his farewell and gave him some money and freshly baked bread.

After about 3 days of walking Eli arrived in the First District. It was nothing like the 2nd, for it was very new and everything looked very advance. There are drones cleaning the sidewalks, Self driving cars, Robots doing shopping for people, it was something Eli saw on TV before, but never seen it in real life. Instead of looking for a place to live and a job like the elder suggested, Eli spent the entire day looking about the city. So logically, when night fell, he still haven’t found a place to take shelter. He walked about the city and was able to find a park.

Since he had nowhere to go, he decided to stay there for the night.

After saying good night, Eli drifted off to sleep... but was shortly awoken.

“STOP!” Shouted a voice “ST-OP! IN THE NAME OF THE LA-W!”

The person who was getting shouted at ran pass Eli

“Stop? Are you stupid?! Who would stop if you told them to stop?”

“I-will-get- youuu *deep breathing* I will - catch you-!”

“um... officer, I think he is getting away...” Eli says as he watches this comedy play out before him.

“I-I-I know that!” The officer says out of breath

“Would you like some help?” Eli asked

“wh-what can you do, *huff puff* you’re just a civilian.”

Eli waved his hand in the direction the they who the officer was chasing went

and from the distance came a yelp for help.

“There you go~” Eli said smiling

When the officer went over to see what was going on, she found the robber suspended in midair.

She gasps “you are a mutant?”

Eli scratches his head “is that bad?” he questioned

“N-no! That’s wonderful!” the officer said amazed

Eli was sort of thrown off by her odd reaction and could only blush

“Hey come with me!”

“ok- wait what!?”

“Come with me to the police department! You’re not doing anything anyways, besides I need to take you in for a statement too”

With that said, she grabbed Eli and the robber to the police car.

When Eli got in, he thought to himself, “I seem to get dragged around a whole lot...”

“yes you do”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“So what’s your name?” she asks

“e-Eli”

“Eli? What a interesting name for a guy” she says as she let out a little laugh

“I am Marry, I just joined the police this month!” she says happily

“So what are you doing here and why were you sleeping in the park?”

“I thought this was going to be a statement for catching the thief...”

“Oh it’s fine!”

“AHEM”

Marry jumped in her chair and turned around.

“I-i diddididn’t see you there chief.” Marry squeaked

“How Many Times Have I Told You This Is Not A Game!?” the chief boomed

“a-a lot...”

The chief sighs and turns to Eli.

“So I heard that you help this newbie catch the thief am I correct?”

“uh, yes sir...”

“And that you are a mutant as well?”

“y-ya...”

“How would you like to join police force?”

“...wait what?” Eli said looking very confused

“Our previous psychic user retired, so we need someone like you. Seeming the way you look I’m guessing your new here and doesn’t have a place to live nor a job. The pay isn’t the best but you can live here. So what do you say?”

“A normal citizen can just join the police force just like that?”

“Well, no, you would have to go through training first but it isn’t that hard. It will take a month at most. So you interested?”

“S-sure! It will be my pleasure!” Eli says happily

“GOOD!” went the chief with him thundering voice

“Here is the address for training, go there and just say Chief Luke sent you. They will take care of you from there.

“I think I just got suckered into this...”

Marry quietly nodded.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It has been a while since Eli join the police force. With his powers, he was able to help many people and catch criminals that others couldn’t. But one thing still sits heavy on his mind.

Where did his father go? Also that he was still unable to tell him the truth.

One day while organizing the archives Marry found something.

“Hey Eli! Didn’t you say you were looking for a guy named Alex?”

“Ya, did you find something?” Eli looked over

“I think so, is this him?” Marry hands Eli a folder with the name Alex on the front

Eli was surprised, it really was his father’s full name.

As he opened the folder he found out why he never returned...

He was killed in a traffic accident the day before he was going to come back.

Within the folder he also found the possessions Al left behind.

There was his favorite pen he uses to write his books with, a photo of his late wife and also a odd looking disk.

“Marry, do you know what this is?” Eli said showing her the disk

“That’s a hologram recorder, are you going to listen to it?”

Eli nods and starts up the playback.

Eli, happy birthday, I don’t have the courage to talk to you face to face but, if it is a recording, I can do it. I have known for a long time that you were a mutant, but I couldn’t say it to you since you knew how much I hate them... But after I met you, I started to change, you are you, mutant or not. I just want to say, Happy birthday Eli, and I love you...”

The hologram ended and so did this story.

(In case if you are wondering why the story seem to be missing many thing, it was because I thought it was supposed to be a 25k word paper, not 2500. So the story was made around the idea that it would be 25k words. After finding out it was 2500 I had to cut out many things to make it fit the requirement.)

Is Love a Business or Something More

Posted by Jian Zhang in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Monday, December 9, 2013 at 12:51 pm

In the Taming of The Shrew, marriage is treated as a form of business transaction.

Kate’s suitor, Petruchio, only sees this as a way to gain more wealth and land.

In a way it is similar to the Captain in The Sound of Music, who also see marriage as a business transaction. However, even though both Petruchio and the Captain sees marriage as business, the Captain wasn’t always like that.

"I swear I’ll cuff you if you strike again.- Petruchio"

(  Page-91 Act-2 scene-1 line-234)

This was the line that Petruchio said to Kate when he was the one trying to woo her. This line shows that Petruchio will hit back if kate were to hit him again, showing that he have little affection for her. To Petruchio this wedding is only a business trip. Since Kate is slapping Petruchio, it shows that she does not wish to marry him.

Within this scene in the movie Sound of Music, the Captain is going to dance with the Baroness. The Captain is supposed to marry the Baroness do to business reasons even though his kids doesn’t like the baroness, nor does the baroness like the kids. The Baroness said this to the Captain “Darling, haven't you ever heard of a delightful little thing called boarding school?” This shows that the Baroness cares not care for the kids, but unlike kate, the Baroness does like the Captain.

"And, for that dowry, I’ll assure her of her widowhood, be it that she survives me, In all my lands and leases whatsoever. Let specialties be therefore drawn between us, That covenants may be kept on either hand.”

(Act 2, Scene 1, line 130-134)

In this scene Petruchio is talking with Baptista, Kate’s father. After Baptista told Petruchio what he will get for marrying Kate, Petruchio answered with the line above. This exchange is an exchange of goods, not about love at any point.

However, for the Captain is different. Even though he believes marriage is just business now, he used to believe in love.

Here is a scene of Maria and the Captain. As it can clearly be seen, the Captain is embracing Maria. This was an act he did not show to the Baroness for she was not someone the Captain loved. Maria on the other hand was able to make the Captain love again.

Back in the days of the “Taming of the Shrew” marriage is more of a business transaction. The father of the bride gives the groom his inheritance, while the groom guarantees the livelihood of the bride. This requires no love whatsoever.

Now on the other, marriage is more about love then anything else. The Captain rejected to be with the Baroness to go with the person he fell in love with.

Humanities Final Portpolio 2013

Posted by Jian Zhang in English 2 - Block on Monday, June 10, 2013 at 1:59 pm

This have been an interesting year, odd, but interesting. During this year I have experienced many things that I otherwise would not be able to understand anywhere else. One of which I say is the most interesting to me would be "Human Behavior." Near the beginning of this year the whole class was given a book that goes by the name "The Lord of The Flies." The name may sound odd; in fact, the name really isn't all that big of a deal in the book. The story itself is about a group of kids that crash-landed on an island with on adults. They were all smart little things so they started to work together in order to survive. They started was a simple system with everyone working together. The older kids hunt while the younger ones build huts and such. However, everything is bound to change after being there for so long. Not long after the older kids dyed their hands crimson with the blood of their first kill, they started to act, well, wild in a way or at lest that’s how we would describe it. In the end, the group split apart into two groups. One side just want to live the way they are on the island, the other wants to go back. But in the end the ones who wish to stay won the battle. But a battle is not won without blood spill and in this case, 2-3 died. This book simply explains basic human behavior. We humans are not born to live the way we do now. We are born to kill others in order to survive.

(A more detailed paper can be found HERE)

Now with the basic human instincts out of the way, time to rant about how the society has affected our simple minds. Here is something that happened not long ago. Sometime during 2012, there was a pipeline being built from Alaska to the US. What is it used for? Once the monster is complete it will haul tons and tons of Tar Sand into the US. The tar sand can be extracted for crude oil. This type of oil is extremely unclean and will cause many problems in peoples' heath conditions. However it doesn’t end there. Even during the building of said pipeline, there were many sad stories about how the next topic, Greed, turned everyday cubical workers and politicians into creatures unworthy of the word "human." The oil price in the US is rising day by day. People want cheaper oil. I mean who wouldn't? But in order to obtain one thing, another is lost. In this case for our greed, our humanity is lost. The workers desperate for work in order to earn money did everything they could in order to start building the pipe. Why do they want money? Simple, because they just WANT money. In our current society, money is the beginning and the end of everything. With enough of that green paper, you could even build a casino on the moon. So in order to obtain some of that paper, the workers abandoned their humanity and did many things that should not be done. One of the stories floating about the news web is how they forced an old lady off her own land. She have been living there for ages, everything she have and had was there on that land. From her house to her ranch to her dear memories. The workers however didn't even bat their eyelashes and just forced her out of her home where she spent nearly all her life. One could ask, "Aren’t they being ordered to do so?" To which I reply, "elementary dear Watson!" The answer is simple; it is the politicians and the corporations that issued the orders. However this does not excuse their behaviors. But the politicians and the corporations are just as guilty. They did this all to gain wealth, money, dough, lettuce. However you wish to call it, my favorite way is to call them paper since that is what they are. The politician’s gains favor with people and thus reelection, meaning more cash. The corporations want more cash to build more stuff to earn more cash. So in the end we are all caught in the endless cycle of greed, unable to escape. Greed is something everything alive have, however in our case, we are the only creatures on this planet that would stab someone in the back just to get paper colored in green.

(Some poems about this subject is HERE)

Now after all that the image of humans to me is the equivalent to that of a piece of trash. But not all hope is lost. There was once a man named Ghadi who was rather short. He was skinny as a twig and weak as a breeze. But this man defeated one of the mightiest empires in existence during that era using words and starving himself half to death. Now he is a shining star of hope in this dark, toxic cloud of humanity. He used his words to defeat the British and it worked out rather well! A wise man once said, "The pen is mightier then the sword..." in this case the guns and bullets. What it means is that using knowledge, nothing is unachievable. During the years that he fought the British power, he never once encouraged violence, but nothing ever goes smoothly. During one of these nonviolence protests, there was a fight. No one was killed for as far as I can remember, but because of this, it totally destroyed everything Ghadi have worked for. Because of this, he decided to fast until all violent actions have been stopped. With nothing but water, this man starved himself for a whole month. Seeing his determination, everyone stopped what he or she was doing. Once again Ghadi surprised the world with his actions. Not long after he has finally done the unthinkable, he have defeated the British Empire. Not once, not twice but three times he broke the way the world goes round and made it spin his way. He was and still should be a roll model for everyone. But sadly this great man's life end with a bang, as in a bullet flying through his body. Though he's body have perished, he's thoughts won't. Those who have listened to he's teaching will forever remember his words. These words of wisdom will be passed day one after another, until the whole world knows them by heart. (Link HERE)

Now onto a different subject, how about English journal entrees? Out of the many that we did, this one is my favorite. The question was something along the lines of beliefs. To believe something is good, however when one believes something too much, it would no longer help. Instead, it will cause harm to the believer.

(More Details HERE at EJ 41)

However one entree that intrigued me was English journal 41. It was for us to write a poem starting with the phrase, "Never shall I forget..." Using this, I wrote my poem based on repeating this line at the beginning of every line. It turned out rather well.

(Read HERE)

Last but not least the project that interested me the most this year would be the play. It was something where I can let my imagination go loose. Since it is not limited by most requirements, I had a lot of fun writing my play. But sadly at the time of writing this, it is not complete. But since it is already 40+ pages long I say is still a good read. I will finish this something during the summer.

What is freedom? Freedom does not exist. It never did and it never will.
The reasoning is simple, we as humans created this thing called "freedom."
Due to that, freedom have different meanings to different people.
When a word changes base on one's opinions, that word is a mere illusion and thus doesn't exist.

1) How does this project relate to the real world?
The only use I can think of for this is for building buildings. When making something so big, it is impossible to measure everything by hand. So because of the using math will be much simpler.

2)What was the most exciting portion of this project and why? What was the least exciting portion to this project and why?
The fun part was when everyone went outside to measure the building. The math and drawing part wasn't much fun for me.

3) What did you learn from completing this project?
I learned ways to calculate height using 3 different methods and that I will never be a architect.

English "Why Do Languages Do?" Jzhang

Posted by Jian Zhang in English 2 - Block on Monday, January 14, 2013 at 12:48 pm
My paper is about my thoughts on language. Does having language help us or hinder us? Does it do good or does it do harm? These are just a few questions I asked myself while I was typing this.
At first when I started to write, I was confused since the paper have such direct instructions. But as I started to write I understood that it doesn't have to be pure facts. It can also be person thoughts.

Language is very intriguing creation of mankind. Even the same language sounds differently depending on where the area is. One’s way of speech can show where someone comes from, their lifestyle and also their personality.

In modern days, the way of speech tends to be heavily judged. By the way someone speaks, they are instantly “ranked” in the persons mind. People would get treated differently just because the listener is not used to or dislikes the way you speaks, this is a major problem.
When one is judged and branded just by their speech, they have no chance to show off their true skills. Even when they do, they are being viewed in a bias manner. So do the language make the person?

I personally do not  believe so. Language is something created by humans, or at least the way we think when we hear “language.”  For one, things such as English, Spanish, French or any others isn’t really needed. They were created by humans for humans, thus it is man made and it wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the humans that created them. So how do we understand one another if our “languages” didn’t exist? Language at its purest forms is sounds. It is just different arrangements of sound that our brain can decode. We are just another species of animal, we are born with a form of communication. Though due to the way we live this natural born language is lost the moment we start to learn. Does having so many languages help us in any way, that is a confusing question.

No, using the languages created by mankind, create more problems than it could have solved. Did it solve anything at all? No one can say since none of us still remember that language. But the languages we create certainly caused much more problem then it’s worth.
Having parents who does not understand the main language used in the land, create many problems. My parents does not speak english, so being the only english speaker in the family, I have to carry part of the weight of my family on my back. “Read these letters on the table and reply to those are needed, than explain the letters to us and fill out the forums. I just said yes” but just looking at the monstrous mountain of papers turns my knees to jelly. The mountain of paper casts its shadow over my, overwhelming me, crushing me. It just hurt my head just looking at it, but it must be done. This line is very common in my everyday life and so much so, it have became part of my life. My parents often tell me that “The more languages you know the better chance you have of getting better work. I agree” but I don’t just want a wealthy life, I want a life that I can enjoy.
So while the phrase is true, but it also have its bad points.
Each language that is created by humans carries a kind of personality. The first one you learn will become part of you. But as you start to learn more and more, the languages starts to slowly change you. The change itself could be good or bad, but since humans in general are afraid of difference. In the story Tongue Tied, the main character was learning a different language. But because of how the world views ways of speech, the mother of the speaker went as far as to cut the underside of her tongue. “If I had lived in China, I would have been an outlaw knot-maker. Maybe that’s why my mother cut my tongue.” This line is from the story Tongue Tied. The idea of trying to fit in with others and the fear of that being different is bad, causes the problem of having different languages even worse.

So why do humans having so many different languages? I believe that this is merely do to the way people think. Humans tends to like the company of others who think similarly to the way they do. This way of thinking will only divide the human race. When one learns a new language it starts to blend in and become a part of yourself. But at the same time you lose a part of yourself. In the end it all comes to personal opinions. It doesn’t matter if everyone understands each other or all humans start dancing hand in hand, as long as the bias exist nothing will change. Language just help increase the bias we already have. Language is something that will only separate and will not unite.

Pipeline Monologue Project

Posted by Jian Zhang in World History - Block on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 1:44 pm
This project is about the Keystone XL Pipeline that is being built in Texas.
After reading this interesting subject our work is to write three monologues in the point of view of three perspectives. My first monologue is about a everyday normal office worker, since I wanted to imagine what a bystander thinks about this. My second is my own point of view about the subject. Since I really disagree with the pipeline my monologue is very optionated. My final one is about mother nature, but in this case father nature since I got a guy to do the part. The reason for this one was because I wonder what would the earth say if it could speak.
During this time I learned how terrible humans are when they are corrupted by greed.
Also how much this pipe will influence everyone's future.

Monologue 1- The Cubical Worker

(tired, walks to door and opens, LOOK DOWN) Lord what is wrong with the price of oil these day?
(angry) They cost more than a bar of gold!

(walks inside, irritated) If this blasted price don’t go down soon I’m going to have to walk to work. (sarcastic) Not like thats ever happening.
(sad) But I would really trade anything for cheaper gas...

(upbeat with a hint of tiredness, inside) (LOOK UP) “I’m home!
(crouches down) Oh what's this? That’s a very nice picture you have there.
(questioning) But why is the sky black, it should be blue.
(surprised) Wow you are learning about the environment so early on.
So tell me what you have learned?
"Wow that sounds very bad, but it’s your bedtime to go to bed.”
(happy relaxed, lies down on bed) Ah! Finally a nice soft bed. (dark gloomy, in bed)  (LOOK UP) “hum, but is it alright?
I mean if this is true then by 2015 the air would be terrible!
I don’t want my family to be breathing toxic filled air! (confused) But what can I do? I’m just one person.
It’s not like if I stop everyone else would.
Besides biking is way too far I guess there is no other way but drive.
(questioning) Still if I do drive I would just help make the already terrible air worse and if what Josh said was true, (horror) than 100 million people will die because of it, and i’m helping to kill them.
Won’t that mean my hands are covered with blood too?”
(confused, LOOK DOWN) If I keep going with the car sooner or later it will harm my family.
But if I don’t how am I soposed to get to work on time?
(irritated) Ugh! It’s either I pay more or people die. (deciding) Money is important and all but family is more important.
(enlightened) Yes, that right, family is much more important.
(amazed) What was I thinking!
(happy and questioning) Now, where did I put my bike?

Monologue 2- For a kid's point of view

(happy, sitting down in class, LOOK AT PRETEND LAPTOP) Yes it’s history class, this is going to be fun!

What are all these for? (door opens) Mr. Block is back, gotta get ready for work. We are going to watch videos? Great! (interested, opens computer) Hum tar sands blockade, what is this about?

Interesting, that is a very big project.
Now let’s see where they going with this thing.

(angry) Wow, what is this nonsense?
Are they even allowed to do that?
(angry and questioning) Isn’t tasing someone like that and physically harming a unarmed person illegal?
What was the law that prevents that again?
Oh ya! “No cruel or unusual punishment” I say tasing some unarmed person should be protected by that shouldn’t they?
(normal speech, stands up, LOOK UP AWAY FROM COMPUTER) “Mr. Block I have a question.
(questioning) why isn’t the government doing anything about this?
(mad) This is madness!”
(normal speech) Ok, oh, ya. (surprised) *sits down*
Wow so much for the land of the free. Let’s see what else did they do.
(surprised) (excited) A video! Let’s see what this is about.
Ok so the old lady was just doing her daily routines on her land, ok.
(questioning and mad) Wait what? Why are the police coming? Wait a minute!
She got arrested? (inraged) For trespassing!?
(enraged and confused) On her own land!
(mad) What in the name of zeus is this?!
(mad and questioning) They go in on some old lady’s land and arrests her?
For what reason? Tresson? against what? Walking on her land? This is ludicrous!
(sarcastic) Good job US, you have finally done it, you make the rules you break the rules, what are we supposed to do?
Rob a bank and said I didn’t do it? Madness, just madness.

(surprised) Oh what's this? (questioning) Hum, a chat box.
“What is going on?” oh I can answer that one.

(in a on stage “I have a dream type of voice”, pretend to type)

“Is this the sound of liberty we hear? NO. It’s the screams of the people.
Is this the scent of freedom we smell? NO. It’s CO2 that is killing you and me.
Is this the land of the free we live in? NO. It’s a land where greed overpowers all.”

There, now send.

Monologue 3- Mothe.... Father Nature

(use a chair to spin) (spin while reading the whole thing, sad, sarcastic and mad, waves hand wildly in the air)
Oh the sadness! Oh the pain! Oh the unjust I have suffered!
(slouched over)
Day after day I work hard to keep all my beloved creatures alive.
I feed them, I give them shelter, I care for them.
(questioning and mad)
But what did that get me?
(angry, quickly stand straight up)
I do my best for them and yet they are not satisfied! They want more and more!
(look confused)
Why can’t they see what they already have?
(mad and sad)
Now they are building this giant tube on me just to kill me faster, 800,000 barrels of oil a day? (mad) They have already done so much to me!
(sarcastic and depressed, speak in a shakespeare like voice)
Why, oh why do you do this to thy?
Look at this thing!
They dig out bits of me and makes it into this matalicy round thing.
Now they are using the tube to kill me more! What did I do to them?
They Strip off my skin and mine my bones, they drill into my flesh and drain my blood,
*hugs hair* they cut down my lush green hair to keep themselves warm.
(questioning mad) What have I done to deserve this kind of treatment? Where did I go wrong? (sad) I did what every parent would do, caring for her children.
Yet they keep on torturing me with their non stopped madness.

(questioning) Can’t they see that they are killing me?
Am I just that useless that they have to kill me off to be happy?
It is useless, they can’t hear my plead for mercy.
(mad and insane, holds hand out in front, gripping tightly) But there is one thing I still can do.
If I must die then they will join me!

Negative space is the space in between a picture. That if glued onto another papper it would make a symmetrical picture.

I just sorted out the pictures and just stared at it until i find it.

Makes the pictures more equal and more intresting.

Yes because it helps the artist with drawing things that are equal.

Music isn’t really my thing so I don’t think this would be very long. But ill try my best to make this thing longer. For example this sentence that have nothing to do with music at.

Anyways music to me is a distracting so I don’t really like it. The only time I listing to music am when I sleep because for different types of music make me dream about different dreams. But anyways one of the music I listen to is the arrogant worm.

I listen to any music so I don’t really have a favorite or any music that have to do with my culture. I just listen to what the radio plays for what I find on YouTube. Any culture of music is fine with me along it isn’t cursing all the way. Some of the music I listen to is dub stab because it’s weird and sounds crazy. I believe it was made in troupe I think not really sure.

But overall I prefer music that is upbeat yet soothing. I dislike rock n roll for I think that is just banging on things and I consider it noise. Well Imp not really sure what culture of music I listen to because it don’t really matter and I don’t listen to music much anyways. I don’t really like music in the 1st place so why am I still typing about it, well I don’t really know I guess its just to fill up a page of words. Some songs that I like are dub step; I don’t really like any so the list is very short. In fact erase dub step too since its not like I love it.

Basic Conversations

Posted by Jian Zhang in Spanish 1 - Manuel on Monday, October 31, 2011 at 11:21 am
Imagine your father is a diplomat stationed in Spain and you will attend public school there. You will need to learn some basic conversation phrases to socialize with your classmates. Here are some basic phrases to get you started.
hola is a common way to greet someone hola means hello or hi
buenos is only used with días so it would be buenos dias and this means good morning.
the other two (good evening and good night)
both start with buenas, so its buenAs not buenOs
good evening is buenas tardes
good night is buenas noches
here is a site to provide you with more info on greetings:

Telling Time

Posted by Jian Zhang in Spanish 1 - Manuel on Monday, October 31, 2011 at 11:20 am
So you're in a mexican boarding school and you're running late to class but your classmates only speak spainish! Don't worry, use this information to learn how to ask for and give the time.

es la is only used on una and nothing else.
The rest begins with son las EX. son las dos, son las tres...             (with es la)    es la una (its 1 o clock)   (with son las) son las dos or son las tres. This website has a lot of info on how to tell time in spanish clock here. But to understand the spanish time you must understand how to say the numbers 1-60. The flash cards about the numbers is made by someone else it was not made by me i choose this because its simple and compact.
