Lord of the Flies/Arctic Plane Crash

Posted by Tyler Carter in English 2 · Pahomov/Rhymer · D Band on Monday, March 25, 2019 at 9:59 pm

Lord of the Flies Essay

In 1991, there was a plane crash in the Arctic and the people thought that they would be rescued in about an hour, and throughout the Lord of the Flies, Ralph and the other boys thought that they would be rescued right away but they couldn’t keep the signal fire going. Just as with the real-life plane crash, the boys had been on a plane that crashed. Ralph is focused throughout Lord of the Flies on getting rescued.

He says, “And sooner or later a ship will put in here. It might even be Daddy’s ship.  So you see, sooner or later, we shall be rescued.” (Golding, 37). Unfortunately, try as they might, the boys struggled with managing to set a fire because they didn’t have any matches. Ralph says to Piggy, “Piggy have you got any matches?” (Golding, 40.)

Then they get an idea and use Piggy’s glasses to make a fire. “Ralph moved the lenses back and forth, this way and that, till a glossy white image of the declining sun lay on a piece of rotten wood. Almost at once a thin trickle of smoke rose up and made him cough.” (Golding, 41) It was ironic that they were not rescued until after Jack set the whole island on fire. “Then Ralph was running beneath trees, with the grumble of the forest explained. They had smoked him out and set the island on fire.” (Golding, 197).

“While most of the 18 aboard the plane suffered cuts and burns and broken bones, all were alive immediately after the crash. But in the 30 hours that it took for the first squad of military paramedics to arrive, five people, including the pilot, Capt. John Couch, a 32-year-old father of two, had frozen to death. The airlift of the survivors did not begin until 40 hours after the crash.” (https://www.nytimes.com/1991/11/05/world/after-a-plane-crash-30-deadly-hours-in-the-arctic.html.)

When the boys in Lord of the Flies were finally rescued, it was a bittersweet feeling because Piggy and Simon had been killed. The survivors of the plane crash had a similar feeling because in the 30 hours that it took for the first military paramedics to arrive on the scene, five people, including the pilot had frozen to death. The survivors were not airlifted until 40 hours after the crash. “Yet the crash site was a mere 12 miles from the Alert settlement. Survivors had expected rescue within the hour.” (https://www.nytimes.com/1991/11/05/world/after-a-plane-crash-30-deadly-hours-in-the-arctic.html.)

I wonder why it took so long for the boys to be rescued, as well as the survivors of the plane crash. After all, they were sending out smoke signals so they could be rescued. In the same way “the lights of Alert had even been sighted from the cockpit.”(https://www.nytimes.com/1991/11/05/world/after-a-plane-crash-30-deadly-hours-in-the-arctic.html. ) The fact that there were any survivors in either The Lord of the Flies or the real life plane crash is amazing to me!

Mikey's Dog Died

Posted by Tyler Carter in English 2 · Pahomov/Rhymer · D Band on Monday, November 12, 2018 at 10:21 pm

I am walking home with my mom from school talking about my day` like normal parents, but she told me that she had some bad news. “What is it?” I said to her, (sky gets cloudy and dark)

And then a voice from a distance ¨It looks like it’s going to rain,” (Lightning and thunder) “RUN!!!” I SCREAM on top of my lungs. “We´ve made it home. Phew, that was close”, I said,

(starts to rain)

When me and my mom got home, I´ve found out that the bad news was that my dog Ben had died. “Awww, RIP. Ben was a good dog. I’ve had him all of my life! Mom, this is the second worst day ever! When Emily died, I never thought that anything bad would ever happen like this again. But it did! I’m just happy that he died peacefully in his sleep, and that he was just old and not sick. But what am I going to tell Jessica, Jenny, Alexis, and Liz? They loved Ben too! I think I want to be alone now! I go to my room. (I slam the door in my room and talked to my self I had remembered those good days with Ben and me) AND… I miss Emily as well as Ben. At least we have an alarm system for burglars so the cops came as soon it has gone off and Emily was in front of the door and that is how she got killed and he did not steal anything in our house and he had gotten arrested for 50 years for  attempting to steal stuff and killing my youngest sister (Emily) If this happens to you, you can do the same thing as me (Mikey) I hate my life but I love my sisters even if they are annoying but, I don’t care. I know how Teenagers are like sometimes.

Vehicle Systems

Through my eyes, systems are created to help people. For example, vehicle systems are created to transport people from one place to another place. A car is a vehicle systems.,  It starts out as a frame. Then different parts are added. The interior is put together first, such as the driving wheel, the seats, gears and the break and gas pedals. This vehicle system cannot move without things like the engine, battery, transmission, and exhaust. The vehicle system also has an exterior. The exterior is made up of the wheels, hubcaps, mirrors, doors, gas tank, headlights, hood and the trunk. There are robots that paint the vehicles. The robots work with the computer to decide what color to use. People also help with building vehicle systems.

I experience a vehicle system because I ride on a trolley everyday to school. I also rode on a school bus from kindergarten to eighth grade. I also ride in my grandfather's car. I have also been on a plane to go to Florida and Maine. I have also taken a train to Florida. Some vehicles systems are faster than others. I do not like to take the train to Florida because it takes too long to get there. I also have a bike. I ride my bike around my neighborhood. like vehicles systems because it takes you places. I do not like to walk, I would rather take the trolley.

Systems help other people in their lives by taking people where they need to go. People would not be able to survive without vehicle systems because we get to get somewhere with wheels; we can´t walk everywhere. If we didn't have public transportation the world would be cleaner because buses take up a lot of fuel and people would have to walk everywhere if they didn't have a car.

Agent of Change- Light Pollution

Posted by Tyler Carter in English 1 · Giknis · Y Band on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 10:02 pm

Light Pollution

In my first post, I talked about how light pollution is harmful to both humans and animals. I learned that it affects the migration of birds. In my second post, I took pictures at 30th St. station with my Mom, and I learned that Philadelphia is one of the worst cities with light pollution. For my agent of change, I did a presentation to my Boy Scout Troop on some facts about light pollution and how to reduce light pollution. It was interesting because I learned how to reduce light pollution and I learned some facts about light pollution. Some of the facts that I learned were that the sky glow of Los Angeles is visible from an airplane 200 miles away, but people there haven't seen the stars in a long time, artificial light at night disrupts the seasonal cycle of trees, light pollution contributes to climate change, light pollution kills millions of birds a year, and exposure to artificial light at night puts your health at risk. Ways to reduce light pollution are to turn off lights, especially outdoor lights, replace outdoor lights with low-glare fixtures, place motion sensors on outdoor lamps, and replacing high-energy bulbs with outdoor CFLs and LED floodlights. I think that simply by turning off lights you can make a difference in reducing light pollution.

I was effective in making a change because I got my Troop to think about how they are not able to see the stars in the city because of light pollution. I suggested that they turn off the lights and switch to motion sensors for outdoor lighting so they can reduce light pollution.

This project was pretty hard, but I had to do it. I learned that I wait until the last minute to do things. I feel that I could have prepared for this project better. Turning off the lights will help to reduce light pollution. Here is the link to my Google Slides.

Light Pollution

Two  Sundays ago I walked around the city with my mom and took some pictures of the tall buildings. It was windy, but me and my mom survived, we walked to 30th street up toward the bridge on Schuylkill River to take a good  picture of the city.https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lSvMeJUmNnhbMoaLe4A-UnbLe8hMga5wY_CxSxMvZsY/edit. I took like nine pictures on my phone. This is a hard picture to take because it was a hard angel because it was when we were walking to catch the trolley in 22nd street.Trust me,it was really cold it felt like 10 degrees I hope you enjoy this doc.If the lights look green, it is really blue.

I learned that Philadelphia is one of the worst cities with light pollution. In fact, Washington, DC to Boston has the most light pollution in the United States. Germany has the worst light pollution in Europe which has the worst light pollution on Earth.

Light pollution:

Light Pollution

I am interested in light pollution because it  affects animals and the horizon and it is making animals unable to see the north star, to go south for the winter. Also we can´t see stars. I learned that it affects birds. It kills insects too. It is way too bright for the animals. Light pollution is when the sky is orange and foggy. It is about how lights at night can damage your eyes when you get older because the white lights is as bright as the sun. I learned how it affects insects, bugs, and nocturnal animals by making them lost without the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper. In fact, light pollution is getting worse, and it can affect your health and your sleep.

Light pollution is an important topic to me because I miss seeing the stars. I always tell my mom to turn off the lights when we´re not using them because it affects our health and

wastes electricity. Light pollution is a widespread problem every year, but we can stop it by turning off the lights.

I don´t understand why people would need so many lights. Red lights are enough for big buildings. Street lights are okay, too. Fun fact! The bright lights confuse nocturnal animals at night for ex: turtles follows the light and end up on the boardwalk of  beaches. There are 10,000,000,000 lights in the united states. But Los Vegas has over 42.3Billion light beams in lukor sky.  That is about 32.3 billion more than the U.S.

I like Smart phones

Smart phone logos (1)
I started off with color blocked sunny beach. I changed it because the first one had too much words. But this one took me 5 days please like it. I chose this one because I like smart phones. In Christmas or my birthday my mom is getting me Samsung galaxy S8. I think that the IphoneX is not worth it because who is paying $999.99 for a phone, not me for sure. And I also hate the face Id for the X. I think that it should be $500.00.

My life_

I chose this design because I like beaches and seashells. The spirals remind me of waves and seashells. I wrote who I am as a person. Don't judge me that I have autism and ADHD because it's hard to learn sometimes. And sometimes I get distracted which is bad because I lose focus and be so silly that it is hard for others to concentrate on their work.
