Project abstract:

For my capstone I wanted to have a project that was reflective of my interests in engineering. The goal, to create a arm will add 100 lbs lifting capacity to the user. I did this by using a system of pulleys and springs to create a mechanical advantage. By doing this project I now have  deeper understanding of some aspects of physics and about different materials and what I can and cannot do with them. In the end , I created a arm that works.

Honus. "How to make air muscles!."Instructables. N.p., n.d. Web. 3 Feb. 2014. <http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-air-muscles!/>.

From this site we learned the properties of something we call an Air muscle which is something we came across in another search. Air muscles contract and expand and can be used for to pull 400 times their own weight depending on their size. Many of them even work when wet. Another name for them are acutators.

Chewee. "Pneumatic Muscles." Instructables. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 Feb. 2014. <http://www.instructables.com/id/Pneumatic-Muscles/>.

Pneumatic Muscles are another kind of air muscles they can be used for even more things because they can come in different shapes. They can be used in pulleys and also work when wet and even under small amounts of damage

Mikey. "Air Muscles: Make an Artificial Muscle Robot Controller." Instructables. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 Feb. 2014. <http://www.instructables.com/id/Air-Muscles-Make-an-Artificial-Muscle-Robot-Contr/>.

This is a instructable for a complex system of air muscles that are all controlled through a system of circuit board. The muscles can be monitored using the circuits and also operated the same way. We mostly wanted to observe a complex system from this link even though we don't plan to make a circuit board in our own.

Krasnow, Ben. "Tutorial: How to build an air muscle and use it in a force-feedback joystick." YouTube. YouTube, 17 Feb. 2011. Web. 4 Feb. 2014. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkaVsoEd6Vo>.

This is another application of air muscles which is what we are really set on using at this point. In this video someone made a very simple air muscle in a joystick and how the system can be measured and used in a plane or helicopter

Daerdan , Frank, and Dirk Lefeber . "Pneumatic artificial muscles: Actuators for Robotics and Automation ." Publications of Brussels University Department of Mechanical Enginering. N.p., n.d. Web. 1 Feb. 2014. <http://lucy.vub.ac.be/publications/Daerden_Lefeber_EJMEE.pdf>.

This is a publication of a document about the effects of a pneumatic muscle and how the displacement of the muscle works.

"Air Muscle." Air Muscle. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 Feb. 2014. <http://www.efunda.com/sponsors/inventables/AirMuscle/AirMuscle_Intro.cfm#PageTop>.

Air muscles mirror what human muscles do. Air muscles, similar to actual muscles can only pull when air is pushed into them and aren't really meant for pushing. Another muscle or alternative needs to be used to create a force in the opposite direction.

"High power military robotic Exoskeleton." YouTube. YouTube, 26 Nov. 2007. Web. 4 Feb. 2014. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hkCcoenLW4>.

This video is a purposefully made leak of military tech that utilizes hydraulic pumps and pneumatic muscles in an entire suit that can move cargo a lot more efficiently then people ny themselves.

Channel, Intel. "Student-designed Upper-body Exoskeleton Provides Augmented Strength." YouTube. YouTube, 12 Aug. 2013. Web. 4 Feb. 2014. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D184ntU5XFw>.

This was done by students at UPenn, and this is a more complex version of what we hope to accomplish in our own exo-skeletal mechanical advantage. This arm is lightweight and can give the user an addition 40 pounds of force that they are able to carry.

"Titan Arm." Titan Arm. University of Pennsylvania, n.d. Web. 4 Feb. 2014. <http://titanarm.com>.

This is the website from the video above that shows discussions with the studentsand more examples of the way the arm can be used. The arm itself, is something that doesn't wrap around the arm like some other designs we have observed.

"Arm and Hand." Mars Science Laboratory:. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 Feb. 2014. <http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/mission/rover/arm/>.

The robotic arm used on a rover has the same three joints as that of a human arm and can move almost just as much. It isn't an exoskeleton in anyway but it was useful for seeing how inanimate objects can mimicking humans.

For my Capstone I worked with another student, Khari Evans in order to make a bionic arm at first. We quickly realized how impractical that was and rethought our Capstone. That was when we thought about designing something that didn't necessarily have to be attached directly to an arm but could be mounted to someone's back or to the side of a wheelchair. We quickly realized that we could accomplish this with a combination of simple machines. The top part is a lever, then there are two different systems of pulleys attached to it. There is also a set of springs attached near the bottom which act as a form of shock absorption.

Throughout this Capstone I have learned a lot about a series of different simple machines and the roles they play alone and when together with a combination of other things they can be used to create more complex inventions. The arm can turn a 100 pound load into 7 pounds of effort on the user. This is simply a proof a concept that expresses how me an Khari Evans were able to work together and how a series of simple machines each played a role in the system. The final product was however a little bit of a disappointment because the base that the Mechanical Advantage Arm is attached to isn't the best of metals and bent easily after running a couple of tests to see what the max the arm was able to pick up.

Tyanna Pleasant

Ms.Menasion

Mr.Ameen, Sayre Morris Recreation Center

Topic Summary:

The goal of this project was to develop skills that best helps elementary school aged children study better.

Project Abstract:

My capstone is designed to help children in my community better their academic skills and for me to gain teaching experience. I always loved children since elementary school, and I love to see them academically improving themselves and they progress to the next grade and eventually get to where I am. The best people to influence these young children are teenagers, because we are not too far from them in age, and we are not bossy and intimidating to them as adults are. This gave me the idea of helping children develop the skills that I had as an elementary school child. During this process I learned that each child has a different way of better understanding material. So I decided to create a test with english and math questions on it to give to them. The children who did not do so well were the children that I will focus my project on. I helped them study using the methods I came up with that best work for children and practiced it on them. To help guide me, I studied a psychologist named Jean Piaget, who came up with a theory on cognitive learning. I gave them the test again and who ever passed showed me that my methods and how I taught them worked. This capstone has given me a better understanding of cognitive learning and efficient way to teach something to a child and make it stick.

  • Ashman, A. F., and Robert N. F. Conway. An Introduction To Cognitive Education : Theory And Applications. London: Routledge, 2002. eBook Collection (EBSCOhost). Web. 29 Jan. 2014.

This ebook is a source I found on EBSCO. Its about cognitive education by Adrian Ashman and Robert Conway. I read the section about memory and learned that in order to best understand the way cognitive development is learned, you must understand memory and how the brain allows people to learn. Without memory a person cannot learn “... if there is no memory, there can be no learning and without learning memory is an empty storehouse.” It also shows diagrams of how memory works by comparing it to holograms. This is different than my other sources because it is a book written by two professors of a psychology field and it is about memory while the other sources are about Jean Piaget and his theory. I believe the goal of this source is to help others learn more about cognitive development and to help parents and teachers understand how to help their children and others when teaching them something new. This source was very helpful to me, it made me think deeper into my capstone project. Especially when developing my tips for the children. I know more about memory and how to enhance a person’s learning ability. It hasn’t really changed much about what I think of my project. It made me think deeper into what i'm really trying to accomplish which is making effective study skills for elementary school aged children.

  • Benaroch, Roy. "Piaget Cognitive Stages of Development." WebMD. WebMD, 06 Nov. 2012. Web. 27 Jan. 2014. <http://www.webmd.com/children/piaget-stages-of-development>.

This site is about Piaget’s cognitive stages of development. It goes more into details about what each stage of his theory says. It also says that Piaget acknowledged the children who did not go through this process accordingly because of other mental problems. The ages he has for each stage is the average ages of children he tested. I do think that this is a useful source, because it is not a blog, or a made up website. I think that website is reliable because it has who its by and when I search it the same information this website did. This website is different than the other I used because it elaborate more on the theory and what exactly does each stage of his theory is about. I think that it achieved its goal of informing others on Piaget’s theory. This information helped me think about how I am going to structure the test and teach the children my tips for better studying. Should I teach them visually, by writing on the board, or tell them something and make them repeat it?

  • Bisignani, Dana, and Allen Brizee. "Welcome to the Purdue OWL." Purdue OWL: Annotated Bibliographies. The Writing Lab & The OWL at Purdue and Purdue University, 03 Oct. 2013. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/614/1/>.

This website helped me better understand how to write an annotated bibliography. It has a lot of information on grammar questions, annotations, bibliographies, and many other issues or questions someone may have about english, or things you should know how to do when writing a paper. It teaches students to split it up into three categories summary, assess, and reflection. Each section has guided questions based on what the section is about. This site is very reliable, a lot of schools and teachers recommend it and they use it to show their students. I think that this source is objective, it is educational and explains the correct way to write papers and other help other with grammar issues. This source helped me write my annotated bibliography. I answered most of the questions in each section as it pertain to each source in all of my annotations.

  • "Carol Dweck, Growth Mindsets and Motivation." YouTube. YouTube, 03 Oct. 2009. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPNeu07I52w>.

This video is about a psychologist who focuses on motivation and young children. This video explains her theory, that when you congratulate children on their success they will be more motivated to do it again and move on to harder challenges. When you do not congratulate them, they will either want to try it again or stick with what is easier for them. She studies the correct way to congratulate children because the way you congratulate them could have a positive effect or a negative effect on them. This source is useful because it gives me a visual explanation of who she is and what she does. It tells all about her theory and how she came to them from the tests she did. It helped me think more about how to keep the children motivated and wanted to learn more in order to keep them interested in what I am showing them. I learned the proper way to congratulate a child when they have done something right to make them want to do it again or move on to something harder.

  • Cherry, Kendra. "Child Development Theories." Http://psychology.about.com/. About.com, 2014. Web. 27 Jan. 2014. <http://psychology.about.com/od/developmentalpsychology/a/childdevtheory.htm>.

This website was about the different theories made by psychologists about child development. It has the different theories and who they are by plus a link at the end about the theorist. This website helped me determine which theory I wanted to focus on because focusing on just child development was too broad. After reading the theory made by Jean Piaget, about cognitive learning, I became more interested and wanted to know more. I do think that this source is reliable because it is not opinionated. The goal of this source was to inform others on the different categories of child development and the theories that famous psychologists came up with that are also being used. This was helpful to me, it helped me determine what I wanted to do my capstone project on.

  • "Cognitive Process." ThinkQuest. Oracle Foundation, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2014. <http://library.thinkquest.org/26618/en-5.5.3=cognitive%20learning.htm>.

This website talks about what cognitive learning is and how do we learn. We learn cognitive by experience something, processing it, and remembering it. This source is based on something that I must know in order to complete by capstone. I think that I should know what cognitive learning is, and this website gave me a lot of information about it. I think that it is reliable because it isn’t made of others opinions, and it has facts that I can look up and confirm. This fits into my capstone by allowing me to have the ability to better explain what cognitive learning is. I will be able to inform others about how memory is a big part of cognitive learning, and it enables us to communicate with each other, and understand what others are talking about.

  • Elkind, David. "Piaget’s Developmental Theory: An Overview(Davidson Films)." YouTube. YouTube, 02 Mar. 2009. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEam9lpa6TQ>.

This video is a documentary about Jean Piaget and he theory. It shows actual clips of him testing his theories on children of different ages, from infants to teenagers. It gives an overview of his life from when he was a young child till his death. This is reliable because the man who made the video knew him personally, and he had actual evidence of Piaget working on his theory. I think the goal of this source was to inform an audience on who Jean Piaget was, and to show how his theory came to be. This source helped me in my capstone by better understanding his theory so that I could give the audience more about him and have the ability to answer any questions about how he came up with his theory and what made him interested in it.

  • Ferlazzo, Larry. "Eight Things Skilled Teachers Think, Say, and Do." Educational Leadership:Students Who Challenge Us:Eight Things Skilled Teachers Think, Say, and Do. ASCD, Oct. 2012. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.ascd.org/publications/educational-leadership/oct12/vol70/num02/Eight-Things-Skilled-Teachers-Think%2C-Say%2C-and-Do.aspx>.

This website is about what a student teacher learned while teaching at an elementary school. I will use these eight skills she learned when teaching the children at Sayre. It says that each student is different and they each have different potential. As a teacher you must push them to do the best they can. This source is credible because I know where and who the information is coming from, it also has other link to topics similar to it and it is coming from a personal experience. I will use this in my capstone by have a slide that will include how to explain things to some students and to remind my audience that each child is different and they do not think in the same way the teacher does so things may seem harder to them than they actually are. This source was very useful when learning how to make connections with the students to get them to better cooperate.

  • "Growth Mindset and Why It Matters." What Kids Can Do. What Kids Can Do, Inc., 23 Oct. 2013. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <http://whatkidscando.org/resources/spec_growthmindset.html>.

This website is about mindset and how Carol Dweck tested her theory with blocks. It introduces what a “fixed” mindset and a “growth mindset” is. Also how “gifted” children could avoid challenges because they are afraid of losing their status. This is a great source, it goes into more detail about Carol Dweck’s theory. It gave me more of an open mind about what else I should know when doing my capstone. This is different than the other sources in my bibliography because it is based on the mindset of humans. Also it talks about how the environment and the way a child is treated while growing up either gives them a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. This fits into my capstone by allowing me to better explain to other what is the difference between telling a child good feedback that will allow them to have a growth mindset, and feedback that will leave a child with their fixed mindset. It helped me think about how I should refrain the praises I say when they get something right or understand what I am teaching them.

  • McLeod, Saul. "Jean Piaget." Simply Psychology. Saul, 2012. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <http://www.simplypsychology.org/piaget.html>.

This website is a biography of Jean Piaget, and it explains every theory he ever had, about developmental psychology each of them based on cognitive child development, detailed observational studies of cognition in children, and a series of simple but ingenious tests to reveal different cognitive abilities. It also informs us that before Piaget’s theory, children were just people with less sense and ability. No one really thought about how and why children act the way they did. Piaget showed that children have a completely different mindset than adults. This source was very useful, it also helped me realize that children really do not think the way adults do, which makes me start thinking about the brian development of children. I think I should further my research and look at the brain of children and adults and compare them.

Abstract:
I chose this capstone Because for many years I struggled with trying to find my self , who I am as a person . Going to High School I faced a lot of problem that Affected my personality. I also built trust issues . I would hurt my self , I would turn to drinking , Drugs . No one knew. I kept everything to myself. I wanted to help someone because I knew that someone out there , was going thought the same thing
Since I was a little girl I've always wanted to be a psychologist. I  always had an interest in helping people with their problems and struggles to get through life when I got this Opportunity to do a big project  knowing that it can be whatever I wanted . Basically My project is about self-esteem and how a person can go through things in their lives and still have confidence in themselves. I picked this topic because I personally struggled with a lot of different things in my life and getting through it was hard , it can cause depression wanting to harm your self and a lot of teens struggle with that . By doing this project I hope to learn about how teenagers think , understand the reason why they do what they do,  what leads them to become depressed , how come their self esteem is so low. This project will enable me to do things that I never had the courage to do such as Talking to different people about their personal life . Allowing people to get a glimpse of my life as well as theirs.

Mr. Baird and Ms. Menasion

My capstone is a short book aimed at beginning and ending habits and comfort zones.

I was interested in reading a few business books and I eventually became fascinated with the idea of a domino effect concerning habit making and self improvement. I read and researched many books and people essential to understanding self improvement in hopes that I could produce a product that uniquely describes the process of coming out of your comfort zone and nudging yourself onto a different path towards your goals, what ever they may be. Mostly my capstone involved reading and talking to people. Things that I was not exactly willing to do as much as I am now.

Capstone Abstract:

Cancer Screening Rates within the Black Community: African, African-Americans, Afro-Caribbean

The black community holds the highest cancer mortality rates even amongst major cancers. The objective of this research study is to determine if there are cancer screening disparities within the black community, using three types of cancers: Cervical, prostate and colorectal.

Background Information:

  • Cervical Cancer:

This cancer begins when normal cells gradually turn to precancerous cells. The exocervix has squamous cells. The endocervix has glandular cells. The part where the squamous cells and glandular cells meet is called the transformation zone. In this zone, squamous and glandular cells create precancerous cells. These precancerous cells then lead to cervical cancer. Like most cancers, cervical cancer can be detected early and prevented earlier.

The chances of contracting cervical cancer are intensified with human papilloma virus (HPV). Young women can be vaccinated for HPV prevention at a young age and with continuous vaccinations, it reduces the risks of contracting the virus that leads to contracting pre-cancer. The vaccination however does not prevent cervical cancer so getting a regular screening is still very important.

  • Colorectal Cancer:

This cancer begins either in the colon or the rectum,. The majority of colorectal cancers start as a polyp: a growth that begins in the inner lining of either the colon or rectum and continues toward the center. Although colorectal cancer does begin with polyps, only some polyps can become cancer, those are known as adenomas. When a polyp is taken out during its early stages, chances of a person ever getting colorectal cancer are reduced.

  • Prostate Cancer:

Although there are other cells that become cancerous, most prostate cancers develop from gland cells. Gland cells are those that make prostate fluids that are a part of semen. Those cells that begin as gland cells are called adenocarcinomas. Prostate cancer is affcte by the size of a man’s prostate. There are plenty of reasons why one is more susceptible to contracting prostate cancer than others. This disease is very likely amongst older men and can be treated with regular check-ups.

Our Vision:

As kids, we both had some type of interest in computers and how these magical machines worked. The very machines that lets us surf the web and play our games or watch funny cat videos. As time passed and as we grew up and got jobs, we both decided to make computers. Not from scratch mind you, but make it in the sense that we bought the parts that we wanted and put it together. While it might sound costly, the machines that we built are much better than your average pre-made consumer computers. They are also surprisingly cheaper. One day we had a vision. Why not share with the world our experiences and our knowledge on computer parts? So that’s what we did, and we made a capstone out of it. Our vision is to have a cleverly named website that will teach your everyday average Joe how to build a computer. We envisioned it to have advice, steps and things of that nature. A tutorial website basically. We wanted our potential viewers to appreciate what computers bring to the table, while providing a guide on how to save money while building a powerful rig. So that’s what we did. We didn’t stop there though. We included a brief history on the computer and it’s almost magical advances into modern day technology.

Proof we did it.

Abstract

This project was not only a project, I wanted to use this opportunity to help myself and my peers. Since we are all heading to college/military/on our own paths, I realized we will all be emptying our pockets soon enough. So I came up with a way to help everyone out. I’ve been recreating images from pintrest, tumblr, imgfave, and other DIY sights and I realized if I can save money doing this, my peers might want to as well. I made cheap DIY (do it yourself) ideas into public youtube videos. So far I've made some decorations and an impressively easy cheesy bread, I plan to make more videos. By making these youtube videos, I am hoping that I can help my peers save some money during one of the most financially draining parts of our lives.

Here is the link for my youtube channel, where you can see all of the videos so far!

http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiWZi-D-gZOk1UrYnjBVZMw

I've done videos sporadically when I had the resources and time, since the middle of october. Although there are only four right now (not including intro video), I'm in the midst of editing another video showing how I helped another student from SLA with her capstone, and more people have been asking to join the DIWHAT channel. So more videos will be coming!

Bethany Mota has been one of the biggest inspirations for me, this is one of her latest videos on cute ideas for valentines day. She comes up with so many uniques ideas for her videos, I also want to come up with things people will enjoy learning to make. She really got me started on DIY in my normal life, and it got me started with my capstone idea.

2."Tumblr." Sign up. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <https://www.tumblr.com/>.

Tumblr. is a huge part in my project, looking at all of these cool hipster pictures and trying to create the things in them is the capstone. So far I do not have a tumblr. but I will create one so I can find more of these pictures, as of right now I've been using my friends and finding pictures from there.

3."Pinterest." Pinterest. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2014. <https://www.pinterest.com/>.

Pinterest is one of the biggest inspirations in DIY not only for me, but for everyone who has heard of DIY. I get so many interesting ideas from Pinterest for my daily life, and I save some for the youtube channel too. It has everything from cute cupcakes toppers to how to make camo pants. I 100% couldn't do this if pinterest wasn't around.

4."DIY Network." - Home Improvement How-To & Remodeling Projects. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.diynetwork.com/>.

The DIY network website shows me how I can create these pictures I see. Since my project is going off of a picture without instructions, I sometimes get lost or need some help. That's when it's time to go to the DIY network website so I can see similar things and get ideas of how to remake the picture I have or how to improve it.

5."DIY Network." America's 10 Worst DIYers :. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.diynetwork.com/americas-10-worst-diyers/show/index.html>.

Americas top 10 worst DIYers is a hilarious show about how DIY-ing can go terribly wrong. I always thought that DIY was all about  doing whatever you wanted to make something you would display in your house, and it turns out it is but you need to have the skills to make nice things. I don't have a background in art or any skills but that is the point of my project, to see if a normal person could make these so called "Do it Yourself" projects. I do pick up some skills from this show, just so I don't make too much of a mess.

I have not actually gotten my hand on this book (physically), but I have read a lot about it on the ebook preview and I have read reviews on Amazon. I am going to try to find it in my local libraries. The reason I think this book could be very influential is because t shows the basics and techniques that skilled DIY-ers like Martha Stewart and such, use when they make things.

This book is kind of similar to the last but it is more specialized on the actual design of DIY. Anyone can make a simple cookie sheet turn into an interesting notification board by spray painting it and hanging it on a wall with some magnets, but it takes skill to make it look nice. This book teaches average Joes how to make nothing look like a really nice something. I also want to get my hands on this book sometime before this year is over, but definitely for my presentation.

This is the first video I saw of DIY around this time last year. In this video Brittany Louise Taylor is making her own glitter phone case, I wanted to make my mom one for her birthday but I didn't know how to. I went on Youtube (my generations google) and I looked it up, a year ago hers was the only one up so I clicked on it and got pulled into the DIY world.

9."imgfave - amazing and inspiring images." imgfave. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://imgfave.com/>.

This website is kind of like Tumblr and Pinterest had a baby. I went to this website freshmen year, along with a bunch of other freshmen because it wasn't locked in school. I realized that they have a DIY folder and I occasionally go on it, I actually get most of my ideas from this website. Some DIY sites have things on there that skilled artist could do, and this website shows true normal people, like myself, and their projects.

10."20 Creative DIY Project Ideas." Bored Panda RSS. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.boredpanda.com/creative-diy-project-ideas/>.

This is the best blog post for bored people who don't want to be bored anymore. If you are laying around the house and want something to do you can pick something off of here and do it. Even though its only 20 ideas, all of them are things that you have in your house. They look intricate and complicated, but they are easy enough that you could do them with a child.

Ayoola Hooks-Gibbs. Capstone

Posted by Ayoola Hooks-Gibbs in Capstone - Baird - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 6:05 pm

Abstract:
I've always loved sewing ever since it was introduced to me when I was 10 years old. When figuring out what I wanted to do for this capstone, it was bit of a no brainer that I wanted to be creative and make headbands. I thought that making headbands and selling them would be pretty easy, but it turned out not to be, because everyone has there own opinions and at the end of it, it's always the customer who is right. The only thing I’m really good at is sewing, knitting and arts and crafts. I began to make headbands for fun at the start of January of 2012, and I thought that I should continue that, but instead become more serious about the sewing and perfect my sewing in order to make the type of headbands that people like, and see in other stored.

This is a website that explains in pictures how to sew a head band, an smaller one. It’s really easy and straight forward. This website is to help me make the smaller headbands which will be cheaper than the other headband that I’m making. Throughout my research I’ve noticed the different fabrics people are using and it seems to me that it’s stretchy fabric. All of the tutorials that I’ve seem so far consist of the same steps, some steps different than the other, but for the most part the same style comes out at the end. I also think that the pictures are a lot more helpful than youtube videos, mainly because for the youtube videos I have to pause it and see how to do one part. With the pictures it’s more of an easy process to follow.

This source is an video/ tutorial on how to make thick turban headbands. This an really reliable source because it gives me  step by step instructions on how to professionally make an thick, winter turban headband. The reason why I chose this video, because I want to have a variety of headbands and not just one head band that people can  choose from. Another reason why I choose this video is because it’s an tutorial on how to sew the headband. The majority of the tutorials that I ‘ve been watch are how to make a headband without sewing it.

"Sewing Basics #2: 7 Ways to Attach/Use Elastic." YouTube. YouTube, 19 Jan. 2012. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

This site explains how to but elastic in the headband so it can, one size fit all. The reason why I chose this site is because everyone has different shaped heads and it would pretty hard to make the headbands knowing that. This site, I think is by far the best one because it gives some great insight on how to make them professionally. I don’t want to make the headbands too identical to the ones that are sold in clothing stores, but better and more creative. I would only be  able to use this method for the smaller headbands that cost less than the other one.

This is a book called Special Events which basically covers how to organize events. I skimmed some of the pages ad not all related to what I’m doing, but one page did. It describes ways to achieve goals. It explains how to have a goal. This page is petty helpful, because I yet have a goal for the amount of money or the amount of head band goals I should have to sell.

"Sewing Basics #2: 7 Ways to Attach/Use Elastic." YouTube. YouTube, 19 Jan. 2012. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

I picked the website pinterest because it has a bunch of pictures of headbands and different picture tutorials. I’ve never been on pinterest before, but I’ve noticed how helpful it is, because you’re able to see DIY products, which I think is pretty cool. This also gives me ideas for my blog that I’m going to create. The picture tutorials are something that I’ve been looking to and something that I’m going to most likely have on my blog.

This website has a picture tutorial for different looking headbands for the spring. Since I’m going to make headbands throughout the rest of this school year, I’ll have to switch it up. During march I’m going to begin to switch over to more spring looking headbands. This website has different tutorials for headbands that aren’t exactly turban headbands, but similar and consist of the same thing and instructions.

This is an website that has steps on how to fundraise. This is the first time I’m fundraising ever. I thought I’d ask google on how to have an successful fundraiser. Since I’m going to fundraise many times throughout the school year I needed to find an reliable source, and I think this is one of the straight to the point reliable sources I’ve found about fundraising. It explains about advertising and having a team, and having a goal. Although this is what I’ve been thinking about throughout the week, it also has explanations, which is helpful.

"GiveForward." GiveForward RSS. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

For my project I also have to buy all of the materials. During my research I had to research where I’m going to buy the fabric, for a cheap price. I stumbled upon this website where it provides a couple of topic fabric stores in Philly. I’ve chosen that I’d go to to Jomar because they’re known for their low prices.

"GiveForward." GiveForward RSS. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

I’ve chosen the Jomar website because I’m able to see te type of fabrics they have before going. Although I don’t know if they’ll necisarilly have all of the differen fabrics on the site. I have a sense of what they have. When browsing the websites, I got a lot of different ideas for the headbands, and the pattern. The patteren is a big concept of the headband, because I have to pick patterns that that people will like.

Isabela Supovitz Capstone

Posted by Isabela Supovitz-Aznar in Capstone - Baird - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 5:10 pm

Abstract Paragraph:

My dream has always been to be a published author. In order to achieve this goal, I decided that I needed to read and write consistently every single day. When thinking of a capstone, I wanted to choose a project that held a much deeper meaning for me. The idea came to me very naturally, I wanted to write my first novel.

My novel takes place in Mexico, and aims to be a beautiful and creative piece that references the struggles of growing up, life and death, and most importantly, the importance of cultural awareness. This book’s focus is the drug cartels, and what experiencing them is like. I decided that cultural awareness is a good focus for a novel, because I feel like most people my age are not conscious of what is going on outside of the U.S. In order to make this story come to life, I read and researched plenty about the cartels, as well as interviewed family members and used stories of friends who have had personal and terrifying experiences with the Mexican drug cartels. While my book is still a work in progress, I have written well over two hundred pages and am constantly editing and adding to my story every day.

Proof of Completion: I talked to Mrs. Echols because I do not feel comfortable sharing my novel in the works publicly online, as I one day hope to publish it. Instead I have made a presentation which I will attach the link to here, with two of the more composed excerpts from chapters one and four of my novel. Here is that link:

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1K86n_mDyobqeGcsV4H6Z1hoV7a5lRpPgZpxhD6f-qRQ/edit?usp=sharing

Bibliography:

1.

Hernandez, Anabel. Narcoland (The Mexican Drug lords and Their Godfathers). Mexico: 2010. 304. Print.

After a visit to Mexico in which I began to learn more about what the police and government are like, and how they really work as the backbone for the drug cartels I decided that I wanted to write a novel about the drug wars happening there. The first thing I did as a part of research for my book was to buy Narcoland by Anabel Hernandez because she is a well respected Mexican Journalist, and her book states all of the facts and very detailed explanations and recalling of events throughout drug cartel history. From this book I was able to pool a reliable variety of information that helped inspire events in my book, and helped my portray things more accurately. I appreciated the way she wrote the book, because she wrote it completely unopinionated, stating only the facts and citing her resources.

2.

Goldberg, Natalie. Writing Down the Bones. Boston: Shambhala, 1986. 171. Print.

Mr. Block my American Government teacher recommended I read this book in order to learn more about what it means to be a good writer. Although I have not finished reading this book, what I have read depicts simple but accurate techniques that help any writer continue to write. This book will continue to function as my main resource as far as how to write a book professionally. I think the main way it is helping me achieve my goal in writing a book is by giving me a constant wide variety of ways that I can improve my writing and create a book that appeals to everyone. I want to make sure my book is well written, so this resource is helping me do that.

3.

Fabrizio, Mejía Madrid. "Drugs and Mexican culture." BBC Radio World Service. (2008): n. page. Print. <http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/news/2008/11/081029_narcoculture.shtml>.

I have looked at many websites that depict what cartel life is like in Mexico, but I think BBC does a wonderful job at doing so accurately. The way that Mejia Madrid (the author of this article) talks about the cartels in many different perspectives is not only interesting, but accurate. People fail to realize how many different roles the cartels play in Mexican society, and how differently certain people in the country relate to and react to what they are doing. I want to portray all of these different perspectives in my novel because I think it’s very important for me to make it as accurate as possible.

4.

Daily Mail Reporter, . "Mexican 'hitman' called El Ponchis 'who killed seven people' ." Daily Mail. 04 DEC 2010: n. page. Web. 29 Jan. 2014. <http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1335510/14-year-old-Edgar-Jimenez-known-El-Ponchis-arrested-committing-murder-Mexican-drugs-cartel.html>.

This article is really important to my book because it is a good example of the shocking things that occur in Mexico because of the cartels. The 14 year old boy murderer whom this article is about is a character in my book. I use this story in my writing to show how shocking the things that happen in Mexico now are and just how close danger is to innocent people there. I also want to make a point to unveil the absolute hardest truths because I want people my age to read this and think “Wow. I can’t believe I didn’t know how bad things were there.” and “What could I do to stop this?”. These types of things hardly ever happen in America, and I think we shouldn’t be alright with it happening anywhere else.

5.  Calderon, Beatriz. Personal Interview. 15 Dec 2013.

My Grandmother from Mexico, Betty, had a close encounter with the dangers occurring in Mexico. This experience was not only absolutely terrifying, but it accurately represents the types of things that happen in Mexico now a days. I decided that this book, in order to stay true to me and my background, had to include real life events that had impacted me. I think this story that I interviewed my grandmother on adds grit to my story, and makes it all the more appealing to the reader.

6. Nabokov, Vladimir. Lolita. Paris: Olympia Press, 1955. Print.

A great majority of the research I have conducted for this project has been through reading great novels so that I have some frame of reference on how to properly write a novel. This book is not only a classic, but it is very controversial and sort of perverse, and I think my novel in it’s own way has similar characteristics, as it is dealing with the hundreds of thousand murders that have occurred because of the drug cartels. I want to learn how to present these issues in a way that people can understand.

7. Diaz, Junot. This is how you lose her. Riverhead, 2012. 224. Print.

I chose to read This is How you Lose Her by Junot Diaz as one of my research books because I figured that it was drastically different from Lolita, and I want to make sure my book incorporates modern ideas. One of the ways in which Junot Diaz helped me with my book is by creating an endearing sense of humor in the midst of chaos and heartbreak. I want to make sure that my readers feel everything in the way that Junot Diaz has made me really feel everything. I think the main reason why this book is great for my research is because it has taught me the importance of adding humor to good literature.

8. Walker, Alice. The Color Purple. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1982. Print.

The Color Purple is another drastically different text that I chose to read for my research, mainly because it is structured in a clever way that I have never seen before. When I read this book I saw issues that used to exist in slavery and sexism portrayed in a very unique way. You are thrown into the diary of a woman whom at first you don’t particularly like, but as she grows and the book gets better, you grow with the character. I think I want my main character Alma to have this kind of growth.

9. Kerouac, Jack. On The Road. Viking Press, 1957. Print.

On The Road is a classic piece of literature that takes the reader from one location to another. Towards the end of my book, Alma and Chello take a road trip from Cancun to Sinaloa, Mexico. In order to write this as accurately as possible, I used Jack Kerouac’s style of writing to teach me how to describe things vividly and at a fast pace.

10. Multiple, . "Mexico Drug War." La Times. 2 Dec 2013: n. page. Web. 4 Feb. 2014. <http://projects.latimes.com/mexico-drug-war/

LA Times has been doing projects online, one of which keeps up with what is happening with the Mexican drug cartels. I have been keeping up with this website regularly so as to see what is currently happening. I think in order to write this book as accurately as I can, I need to continue to stay updated on what is happening in Mexico. I will continue to use this site to find details for my novel.
