Student Name:

Ryan Shaw

In school mentor’s name:

Mr. Baird

Topic Summary:

The goal of this project was to research and create a way to teach people how to play chess and to understand chess strategy.

Project Abstract:

The inspiration of my capstone is my love for chess and my love of playing games like chess. Games like this help me with developing my problem solving skills, so that I can use these skills in real life applications. When I realized this, I wanted to help other people who might not have the same experience. I decided I was going to research and take a study of how quickly people improve at playing chess with an ELO scoring system, so that I could actually graph and use the data, then use that information to create a comprehensive website so that anyone could learn how to play chess and learn how to use simple problem solving strategies.

Capstone:
http://ryanshawcapstone.weebly.com

Annotated Bibliography:

1. "World Chess Federation - FIDE." World Chess Federation - FIDE. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

This is a resource that will help me significantly in the coming weeks. It is a very popular, and much visited website that many chess players visit to research chess and to play online chess. This will help me get an idea of how to teach people chess and how to accurately gauge a person’s chess abillity.

2."E.I.01A. Laws of Chess." World Chess Federation. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

This source will help me explain chess to those who have a larger than average understanding of chess and the mechanics. It will fall under advanced categories on the website, and I learned more about chess and why some of the mechanics are there inside of the game, by looking at these rules and their explanations.

3. "Chess.com." Chesscom RSS. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

This is a list of chess openings, some famous, some advanced, used by the top chess players in the world. These players used the techniques that are described in detail in this web page to describe the amount of thought and the process of the moves and openings by taking the reader through the moves one by one. A very useful tool to show to beginners and show them how thoughtful and interesting chess can be.

4. "Chess.com." How to Play Chess: Rules & Basics -. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2014.

This is a source that could help me a large amount with teaching people how to play chess. While I have an understanding about how the game is played, I don’t know how to teach a beginner as well as someone like my mentor, Mr. Baird, a chess teacher. I need more resources like this one that will help me understand how to teach people how to play chess.

5. "Chess.com." Advanced: Strategy. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

These are examples of strategies used in chess games, not just openings, but also thoughtful uses of detailed chess strategies. Each of these strategies could be something simple that could help a beginner, or it could help a person that has an advanced understanding of chess, or someone tha

6. "5 Year Old Teaches 2 Year Old to Play Chess." YouTube. YouTube, 08 Dec. 2008. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

This source is a youtube video that shows a 5 year old describing how to play chess and how to use the pieces to a 2 year old. Then he describes how to play the game. While I thought this wouldn’t be useful at first, I quickly realized that this is a useful video to show how easily one can learn chess, and learn how to play it. The resource will help me find the perfect way to teach a new player how to play the game.

7. "Lecture Notes." Lecture Notes in Game Theory. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

Game theory is still an important part of my project and this is a list of lectures, a few of which I have watched, describing the approaches to game theory, and what game theory means. I can easily find use in this source by showing a few lectures as introductions to intermediate players and as a way to show players how important it is to understand the game and how game theory works with chess and what that means.

8. "Get Your Elo Rating Here!" The Automated Chess Rating Utility. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

"Cognitive Ability Test." RSS. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

These are two sources that have the possibility to estimate or score a person’s chess playing ability. There are a few different ways to do this, but the first one of these sources estimates a person’s ability by giving them a few example chess problems, where the player describes the correct way to proceed to check mate. While this is happening, the computer keeps track of how the person is doing, and at the end, gives them an estimated ELO based on their answers. The second source is one that tests cognitive ability. While the first source was an estimation, this is an actual test, and I can use both to see if there is a correlation between chess and brain function, or at least the scores of the two.

9."HTML." W3Schools Online Web Tutorials. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2014.

Since I will be coding my website, I will need to frequently use resources to finish programming the website, and to accurately code, I need a reference guide. This is a guide I’ve used in the past to accurately code and code with a lot of efficiency. I’ll be using this citation to guide myself through coding the website, which will be a helpful resource in showing new players how to play.

10. "Improve Your Chess." How to Improve at Chess. Top 10 Reasons for Stagnation. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

This is an online chess school that has the ability to teach people about chess in a different manner than I’ve seen before. Using this site, I can teach the new players how to play in a way that I hadn’t before realized and I can now accurately use to teach new players. While teaching chess before this, I would’ve used the same techniques as the other sites, I can now incorporate these new techniques in teaching chess to new players and advanced players alike.

Mentor

Larissa Pahomov, English Teacher

My capstone is a collection of short stories about teenagers dealing with life.

For my capstone, I used inspiration from myself and others in order to create stories with one sole purpose. I wanted each one to show that no matter how hopeless someone's situation may seem, they should never lose hope in themselves or others. I took the most basic themes from the stories I had heard and my own, then applied them to my own stories.  I have learned that even though people’s stories are unique from one another, they tend to always have something in common. My goal for this is to create stories that would not only entertain the people that read them, but that also stayed with them, and I believe I did just that.

The link to my capstone is here.

Below is an excerpt from my first chapter of my collection of short stories.

Today feels no different from any other day. Why would it? You have no reason to believe otherwise. You just think it is going to be another pointlessly dull day. Your alarm has just yanked you from a dreadful dream. Why was it dreadful? You can no longer recall, but you are sure you will have the same dream tonight, just to forget it the following morning. All you know is that you just want to go back into a deep slumber. Despite your desire to go back to sleep, with much effort, you pull yourself out of bed.

You look around your room in search for something different. Anything would suffice really. You just want something different to happen this morning. Maybe an owl carrying a letter addressed to you. You think about how epic that would be. To your disappointment, nothing happens.  It’s just another dull morning. You get out of your bed without making it neat and presentable. Why bother? You're just going to get back in it later. You then head downstairs  towards the kitchen.

Once in the kitchen, you look at your wide variety of food to eat. You have four boxes of Pop Tarts, each flavor you are either sick of eating  or was never good in the first place. The same can be said about your choices in cereal and Hot Pockets. You stop trying to look. The previous day you went into your step-dad’s wallet and took twenty bucks. Not just because you could though. You're not a bad person. You just feel he does not deserve it. He has a job that pays well enough, but he leaves the cooking and most of the shopping to your mom. So why not? He can be useful for once. While in the kitchen, you decide to go to the stand on the way to school. You wasted so much energy coming downstairs for nothing. You walk upstairs sort of pissed and go into the bathroom.

After you wash up and put on clean clothes you are just about ready to leave.  You head for the fridge and make lunch. You then pick up the first alcoholic thing you find  and fix it with any normal non-alcoholic drink. You do this every so often to take the edge off of life. It is the only thing that helps lately. You then put the juice away with your lunch and gather all your things. You check for the usual things like your keys or phone. You feel for the money in your pocket, then head for your door. Before opening it, you say goodbye to whoever is in the house. You don’t hear anything, which either means they’re still sleeping, or just ignoring you, which you have somewhat gotten use to. You open the door and leave in  a rush, since you don’t want to miss the bus.

You have a long bus ride ahead of you, and you don’t know what to do with yourself. For a while you just sit there thinking about the things in your life. You try to think about the good things in life, but recently there has not been much good going on. You hate thinking about it so you just try going to sleep. Even though it is a dreadfully terrible idea to sleep on public transportation, you know how to position your belongings so they do not get taken. You fall asleep. At least that was the plan. You just cannot stop thinking about the troubles in your life. It irritates you to limits unknown. You take out your lunch box and drink some of the juice you put inside. For you, some is a big chug. What’s the harm? It helps you think. You then pull out one of your favorite books to lose yourself in.

You love this book to death. You wouldn’t care if everyone else hated it. You like just about any book. You do have standards after all. Reading is your passion and it is one of the few things that you enjoy anymore. For a moment you observe the condition of the book. You wish it looked as new as when  you first got it. Sadly,  it is worn out after so many uses. This makes you feel some sort of way but the condition is not as important as the content. You begin reading. You become lost in the story and you enjoy it. You love books because you can be someone different. You become someone who is needed by others. You love feeling this sense of purpose in life. You wish you were in that world. You wouldn’t even mind that you are stuck in the book with your future and past set in stone. If you were in the book, people would care about what happens to you. They want to know who you are, the things you accomplish and what you stand for.

You don’t want to leave. Despite that, you get that dreadful feeling you are only a few blocks from school. Reluctantly you close your book, put it away and pull the string for the bus to let you off at the next stop.

Below are my annotative bibliography

1) Asher, Jay. Th1rteen R3asons Why: A Novel. New York: Razorbill, 2010. Print.

I chose this source because when I originally read it, I found it to be a powerful, meaningful, creative and thought provoking piece of literature. That is the type of writing I am aiming for in my short stories. I also chose this source because it is based around the issues that troubled a certain teen who is the driving force throughout the entirety of the book, despite the fact that she had died before the story even began.  I hope that by reading this book, my writings for my capstone will be improved, to the point where people would even compare it to this great piece of work.

2) "Anxiety Disorders: Types, Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention."WebMD. WebMD, n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2014.

To write my book I do actually need information about what I am writing. In my story, many of my characters suffer from a form of anxiety. I was not sure what disorders were classified as anxiety, so I wanted to clarify that issue. I also wanted to know the major symptoms of anxiety in general and to have an experts view on how to improve one’s anxiety. I hope that this research will enhance my writings about what most people go through when they have a type of anxiety. Even with those characters that do not have anxiety, I can give them a slight element of it.

3) "Types of Depression: Major, Chronic, Manic, and More Types." WebMD. WebMD, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2014.

To write my book I do actually need information about what I am writing. In my story, a few of my characters suffer from major or chronic depression. Even though I had a good idea of what depression was, this source laid it out for me step by step and made it easier for me to write about it. It was also interesting to know the signs that people need to look out for if someone is suffering from depression and how you can help those who suffer from it. This writing has improved my writing about this type of topic.

4) Ambardar, M.D. Sheenie. "10 Ways to Improve Depression and Anxiety without Meds."The Huffington Post. TheHuffingtonPost.com, 29 May 2012. Web. 30 Jan. 2014.

Scene I had already had a source that told me all I needed to know about depression and anxiety, it did not make sense to find anymore sources that were defining what they were, since half of this book will be my interpretation of what someone would go through in certain situation. For that reason I chose this source to show me more “natural” ways for those who suffer from anxiety or depression to help make their situations more bearable. I believe that medication is not the only way to solve problems. Even if my character do not use this method, I can still bring it up in my writings.

5) Stossel, Scott. "Surviving Anxiety." The Atlantic. Atlantic Media Company, 22 Dec. 2013. Web. 28 Jan. 2014.

I have a lot of information on the topic of anxiety from experts which is enough for me to write good pieces of work, but I also needed to hear about anxiety from a “person.” Someone who lives with it everyday  and had the strength to write about it and post it online. That is why this is one of my sources. It is best to get your information straight from the source.

6) "Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Fact Sheet." : National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2014.

I sought out this source for the sake of one of my stories that did not necessarily focus on the psyche of the teenagers in the story. It mainly focused on the physical condition of the main characters and how they deal with the cards they are dealt. One of the characters are based off of one of my peers and to write a good story I need to research the injury that they had sustained. I found this source to be extremely helpful because my peer verified that what was on it was accurate. Hopefully I can use this source to its full potential.

7) Perks of Being a Wallflower. Dir. Stephen Chbosky. Perf. Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, and Ezra Miller. Mr. Mudd, 2012. DVD.

Perks of Being a Wallflower is a perfect source for my book. It covered all the things that I plan on covering and more. It talked anxiety, depression, being singled out, bullying, relationships and other deep topics. There is also a book which would also be a good resource, but I wanted something more visual to look at for my storytelling. I wanted this because I wanted to be able to see these characters look as things fall apart around them, and when new doors open for them. If I could just see how these things happen, I could write about them more descriptively.

8) "Coronary Artery Disease-Surgery." WebMD. WebMD, n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2014.

I sought out this source for the sake of one of my stories that did not necessarily focus on the psyche of the teenagers in the story. It mainly focused on the physical condition of the main characters and how they deal with the cards they are dealt. One of my characters has a heart disease, and this specific one is one of the most deadly ones. I wanted to make sure I accurately portrayed how this person would act and what trials they would need to go through. Even if I do not use the actual surgery in my story, I can still have this as a refernce.

9) "Coronary Artery Bypass Graft ." Coronary Artery Bypass Graft. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2014. <http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Coronary-artery-bypass/Pages/Introduction.aspx>.

This source explained the treatment needed for this disease if it got more severe. Even if I don’t bring this disease up by name, I still have a reference to what it is like to live with it.

10) Card, Orson Scott. Ender's Game. New York: Tor, 1991. Print.

I found this to be one of the most important books I read in preparation for my capstone This was the sort of reading I need to inspire my future writings. I found ender’s game to be very thought provoking and well written. Despite it being a different genre from what I plan on writing, it is that element that I want in my stories, thought provoking and well written. Hopefully I can use what I learned from this book to enhance my own stories. I also think it is good to read a genre different from what you are writing. It enhances how you envision a situation in your stories.

Abstract

For my capstone, a fellow classmate and I decided to do a dance club for the school. At first we were doing it for SLA Center City and then decided that it would be nice to also extend the club to SLAB. First we decided what songs we was going to dance to and then came up with some dance moves. We were going to have our club as an after school activity every Wednesday at Beeber but at the end, it turned out to be one of their mini-courses for the 4th quarter. So then we came up with a lesson plan on what we was going to do with the students and what we wanted them to get out of it. We decided that we were going to teach them a couple of dances and then as their final project, have them come up with a dance on their own. During the process I’ve learned that patience is really important to have because we had to wait until the students and teachers cooperated with us. And that leadership skills were needed for this club because we were working with ninth graders who think they know everything.

There was a website for my Capstone, so click here to view the website.

Annotated Bibliography

Teaching Dance & Running the Club

Modern Dance, Techniques and Teaching.

This book teaches you how to teach people the techniques of dancing. It also gives you a couple of classic moves to enhance just about any choreography sequence. It is important to know how to teach people because it puts your members at ease as well as yourself. If you know how to treat people the whole process goes a lot smoother.

Because we plan on making a club, it is best to know how it works and what it takes to make one. This book teaches you the ways to keep a club going past a few weeks. It also tells you techniques in how to keep club members interested and itching to come back which is really what we need to keep this capstone alive.

Hip Hop Choreography

Jam, Mega. “'23' ft Miley Cyrus choreography by Jasmine Meakin (Mega Jam).” Online video clip. Youtube. Youtube, 1 Dec. 2013. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtU13wWKBUU>

This youtube video is a dance video of one of the people one of us is subscribe to on youtube. She is a dance instructor and she puts all of the rehearsals she does onto her youtube page along with the tutorials of her dances. We selected this video because it will help come up with some dance moves we can do. It helps to figure out what music is best to dance to. Viewing this video will allow us to see how other people dance and what they think are good dance moves.

“Dance Team- Dance Technique.” Varsity. Varsity Brands, n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <http://www.varsity.com/event/1170/dance_technique>

This website gives us information about the techniques of dancing, it gives information about different turns foot alignment and tips in improving your dances. This information will allow us to dance the correct way with the right alignment and body position. Knowing this information before we actually start dancing will save many injuries to us and the people who are dancing with us. We could use this information on our website because if people want to copy any of our dances, they first have to know the techniques we used.

Williams, Brenda. “Where Did Dance Come From.” ezine articles. Sparknet, 2014. Web. 28 Jan 2014. <http://ezinearticles.com/?Where-Did-Dancing-Come-From?&id=1144971>

This article by Brenda Williams is about dance and where it comes from. She goes to say that no one actually knows how it originated but it’s an important part in ceremonies, rituals, and celebrations. While reading this article I learned that dancing was first seen in Egyptian times, in their wall paintings. This article doesn’t help with how we dance but it does help us to know where it come from. Also it will help us with our website because “knowing” where dance come from can be the introduction to our website.

AdrianVanOyen. “50 Epic Dance Moves.” Online video clip. Youtube. Youtube, 25 Nov. 2012. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. < http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dodGzOjBOHA>

We chose this video because it showed us what not to do as a dance. This is kind of important when it comes to dancing because you want to make sure that you don’t look crazy when you want people to take you as a serious dancer. So doing doing some of these dances in public will not accomplish this. This allows us to get away from the “bad” dancing and towards the better dancing.

Jam, Mega. “‘Where Have You Been’ Rihanna  choreography by Jasmine Meakin.” Online video clip. Youtube. Youtube, 7 Aug. 2012. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpuDjCf8HVE>

This video had some intriguing moves that we would like to learn and then put together with our own dance moves. It helps to learn from other people who are more experienced than us because we can learn so much and enhance our own knowledge of dancing.

Jam, Mega. “‘I’m Out’ Ciara ft. Nicki Minaj choreography by Jasmine Meakin.” Online video clip. Youtube. Youtube, 7 Sep. 2013. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00f1-gh1WYg>

This video had some intriguing moves that we would like to learn and then put together with our own dance moves. It helps to learn from other people who are more experienced than us because we can learn so much and enhance our own knowledge of dancing.

Delving Past Hip Hop

GreatAmazingWorld. “Best African Dance Lessons Tutorial Video- Dancing on the Clock.” Online video clip. Youtube. Youtube, 4 Jul. 2013. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIPEVHGjdP4>

This source is especially useful because it delves into more than just hip hop dancing. It is important to look at where dances came from and most hip hop dances have African roots. With that being said we will be looking at the root of dancing so we can fully understand modern dancing. If you know where your stuff comes from it is easier to understand and perform the modern stuff.

fitforafeast. “Salsa Basic Dance Step- learn Latin Dance Lessons for kids.” Online video clip. Youtube. Youtube, 1 Nov. 2009. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F758q-jifJI>

Having a knowledge of dances from different cultures only enhances our techniques. It gives it a flare and steps outside the box of just hip hop. It’s important to not only understand the dancing you like to do. You have to know about multiple dances because each dance style is influenced by another so it’s best to know multiple to better understand what you’re doing.

Project Type: Presentation Keynote

Student Name:

Laura De Jesus

In school mentor’s name:

Ms. Martin

My capstone is a presentation about Teen Pregnancy and Abortion.

Abstract:

The goal of my capstone was to make a presentation to teach and show the freshmen about the statistics of teen pregnancy and abortion. The main reason I did this project was to inform other people around the same age group about the things that could occur after you are pregnant and that there are options, everyone that has a story without answers would be heard and understood. This project is not only bringing me out my comfort zone but also making me feel like I am a better person for helping others in the future and right now. I have been working with various people and have done a lot of research to be able to get all the information that I have now. I have learned more than I expected to learn in the matter of such a short amount of time. As a result of my project I have been able to get something out of it that I never thought I would get which is confidence, this a milestone. But the main thing is the fact that I am learning at the same time as the students. I hope that the students learn as much as I did during this process, because I want them to leave with the same amount of knowledge that I left SLA with.

Bibliography

Birth Statistics

I chose this source because it is the most beneficial because it is from Pennsylvania Philadelphia. I selected this source because the information that is given is accurate and useful. It is a reliable source and used for important purposes.  It provides information that is useful. I selected this source for the simple fact that it is the main purpose of my project.  I chose this source because it is a part of life, it is something that people don’t talk about is religion and the trace back to how it is viewed with teen pregnancy and abortion.

"Birth Statistics." . N.p.. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.chop.edu/healthinfo/birth-statistics.html>. ("Birth Statistics")

My Abortion My Life

I chose this source because I feel like it is a powerful source, it is giving out the stories of others and what they went through when they went through abortion and what they felt. It is useful because you are learning what the struggle is and the life lesson. The only limitation is that it is stories and things of that sort which limit me from really using any of that. But on the other side you are leaning a story of another person.

"My Abortion My Life." . N.p.. Web. 31 Jan 2014.  <http://myabortionmylife.org/pages/sharing-our-stories.php>. ("My Abortion My Life")

Planned Parenthood: Abortion

I chose this source because it is reliable and has valuable information. It provides all the information that I need for this topic, it keeps the issues that are at hand. It is informing the people that are going through this there are options. One limitation for this source is that there is only telling you the options, meanwhile if you go to the actual class you learn more because they are information session.

"Planned Parenthood: Abortion." . N.p.. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/abortion-4260.asp>. ("Planned Parenthood: Abortion")

Planned Parenthood

I chose this source because it is reliable and has valuable information. It provides information that is useful. I selected this source for the simple fact that it is the main purpose of my project, it is the main source of my information and where I will be getting my data from. I found this source useful because it has everything in one and all types of different links and date information for all of the topics that are involved in my final project. One limitation for this source is that there is too much information and some of it is not needed and some of it is repeated, but other than that this a useful source and comes in handy.

"Planned Parenthood." n. page. Print. <http://www.plannedparenthood.org/>.

Religious Beliefs No Barrier to Teen Pregnancy

This is a source that is different because it is involving religion. It is giving information that is useful and comes in handy. I chose this source because it is a part of life, it is something that people don’t talk about is religion and the trace back to how it is viewed with teen pregnancy and abortion. I found this source useful because it made a difference on how I viewed certain things. One limitation is the fact that there is information but it is limited.

Teen Birth

I chose this source because it accurate but also because it is informative also. I chose this source because it is beneficial to my capstone, it is telling people who need help and giving out options. It gives out information that you wouldn’t find anywhere else, because there are some options that are from them. One limitation is the fact that there is information but it is limited.

Teen Haven: Water Street Ministries

I chose this source because it is beneficial to my capstone, it is telling people who need help and giving out options. It gives out information that you wouldn’t find anywhere else, because there are some options that are from them. I selected this source because while I was interviewing my friend this is where she went to get her information and help to make up her mind on what was the best for her. I found this source useful because although it is slightly different than the other sources it is that it is religious. The only limitation is that the information is somewhat limited.

"Teen Haven: Water Street Ministries ." . N.p.. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.wsm.org/teenhaven>. ("Teen Haven: Water Street Ministries "

Teen Mom

I chose this source because the fact that it is real life and reality. Also for the fact that it is something that people can relate to and have a connection with them. It is useful because it is showing the life after teen birth and that is something nobody really thinks about because they aren’t focused on it. The information that is given through this show will showcase the main point of my presentation.

Teen Mom

I chose this source because it is showing the progress that has been made since the world has been in contact with the show. The data that is shown is useful and informative. I chose this source because it is reliable and has valuable information. It provides information that is useful. I selected this source for the simple fact that it is the main purpose of my project, it is the main source of my information and where I will be getting my data from.

Teen Pregnancy

I chose this source because the fact that it is real life and reality. I chose this source because this is the outcome of what could happen. Things change when the things around the surroundings change. The story behind the information is useful and interesting. I found this source useful because it is a source that is informative. Teaches you life, the only limitation is that it is in Texas and not in Philadelphia. It makes you wonder what it is really happening. It is empowering.

Alexis Babcock Capstone

Posted by Alexis Babcock in Capstone - Garvey - Wed on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 9:25 am

Digitalized Capstone: http://babcockcapstone.weebly.com/

Mentor: Mr. Herman (Digital Photography and Digital Video Teacher)

Summary: My capstone is a journey to discover what a “Lexy Babcock” looks like through analyzing different genres and elements of famous photographers.

Abstract: The idea derived from my love of photography. After seeing a project last year that related to photos of Philadelphia, the wheels started churning. I knew that I wanted to work with photography for my capstone. I first played around with the idea of creating sculptures made of photographs that I took, which turned into a photo-gallery event. That became the goal: presenting myself in a photo-gallery night. When I finally was able to let go of my focus on the final product, I started to focus on myself and photography. I decided that I was going to figure out what a “Lexy Babcock” photograph looks like. I researched photographers that I admire in various genres of photography. I decided that I would look into elements they use and in a way mimic them. I’ve struggled with equipment, finding models, securing locations, etc. The challenges I’ve faced that made the process worthwhile. The photographs that I took will be in a photo-gallery event on June 6th.

Bibliography:

Source 1: Alessio Bolzoni

Bolzoni, Alessio. N.d. Photograph. Alessio Bolzoni Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.alessiobolzoni.com/>.

When I was looking into editorial work, I came across Alessio Bolzoni. I picked him out as someone to be inspired by because of the way his models are. He’s known for putting his subjects in weird, structured poses and sometimes creating patterns out of models. I’d like to try this because it’s completely different than the other candid, natural photographs I’m also going for.

Source 2: Alfred Eisenstaedt’s work & bio

Eisenstaedt, Alfred. VJ Day, The Kiss. 1945. Photograph. Life, New York. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://life.time.com/alfred-eisenstaedt/>.

When studying photographers, I had to include Alfred Eisenstaedt. He’s famous for his candid photos, most specifically “VJ Day, The Kiss.” Everyone has seen this photo. I want to be able to catch moments like he did. Moments that everyone can appreciate. I’m hoping that as I continue to study him and his work, I will be able to find a way to catch these moments without interrupting my subject. People tend to be different with a camera around so I’m using his secrecy as an element that I want to mimic.

Source 3: Exit Through the Gift Shop Documentary

Exit Through the Gift Shop. Paranoid Productions, 2010. Film. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.banksyfilm.com/index.html>.

I chose Exit Through the Gift Shop to put on my bibliography because it goes along with me finding my niche and my brand. Banksy, an infamous graffiti artist. He has a clear style, an anonymous outspoken street artist. His work is consistent and it’s something that I can look to for inspiration. I’m hoping that after seeing this documentary, I’ll notice a pattern in my work.

Source 4: David LaChapelle: Heaven To Hell (GO)- David LaChapelle

LaChapelle, David. David LaChapelle: Heaven To Hell (GO). Cologne: Taschen America, LLC, 2010. Print.

I’ve chosen to look at LaChapelle’s work because he is currently one of the best photographers. He uses a unique theme in every one of his photoshoots. Many people want them to shoot him because he’s so over-the-top. His avant-garde, colorful style is what draws me to his photos. He likes to push boundaries and take risks. I’m going to mimic his use of Color Saturation and Avantgarde style for a photoshoot. My photoshoot is going to contain people looking as if they’re in space with funky colored clothes and over the top makeup and hairstyles.

Source 5: Peter Lik’s personal website that contains his work

Lik, Peter, and . N.d. Photograph. Peter LikWeb. 30 Jan 2014. <http://www.lik.com/>.

Peter Lik has absolutely beautiful landscape photos. From the beach, to forests, they are all colorful and leave you feeling like you’re there. Many of his photos are perfectly centered and structured. Most of his photos are cut to look extremely wide, and without a lot of length. This idea helps guide the eye. I’m going to take up this idea, but add my spin of an urban environment. I want to achieve that natural beauty and color where it’s unlikely to see it.

Source 6: Terry Richardson: Terrywood- Terry Richardson

Richardson, Terry. Terry Richardson: Terrywood. Bologna: Damiani Editore, 2012. Print.

Like David LaChapelle, Terry Richardson is also a very desired photographer. He shoots all of the stars. What I love about him is that there is a very distinct style that he has. I admire his consistency. I want to study his photography to possibly discover what my person niche is. His photos tend to be very raw. His models, no matter who they are, look completely in their element. Bringing out natural emotion is something I’m hoping to do when I practice portraiture. He also tends to use a plain white background. It allows the person looking at the picture to focus on the person, less than everything else. Although his photos aren’t always up-close and personal, there’s a very intimate feel and everything is always well lit. Nothing’s hidden or left to figure out. I’m going to use this idea of blunt portraits.

Source 7: Tips and Advice for new Photographers

Rowse, Darren. "11 Tips for Beginner Photographers."Digital Photography School. N.p.. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://digital-photography-school.com/11-tips-for-beginner-photographers>.

I cited this source because it’s important for any type of photo. It’s a list of tips and tricks for people who have little experience in photography. It’s important for me to remember these because they will help my different photoshoots. It will help me keep from forgetting important elements such as: clothing, lights, other equipment, people, or a product. I picked this website over a few others I saw because I felt like it was more useful than others. This one talks about basic necessities. Some other sources were too detailed and overwhelming. This is the only helpful one.

Source 8: Cindy Sherman’s Cindy Sherman: The Early Works

Sherman, Cindy, and Gabriele Schor. Cindy Sherman: The Early Works: Catalogue Raisonné, 1975-1977. Ostfildern: Hatje Cantz Verlag, 2012. Print.

Cindy Sherman is easily the coolest photographer I’ve ever studied. All of her photos contain the same model, herself. She puts herself in all of these crazy costumes and becomes millions of characters. The idea of self portraiture is scary unless it’s a selfie. By studying her work, I want to develop a set of photos of myself dressed and posing as multiple different characters. I think this photoshoot and studying her will help me to put myself in the place of my models. I’ll be able to understand what they’re feeling and how to make my photographs and connections with people better.

Source 9: The Wade Brother’s website containing all of their work

Wade, Lyndon, and WadeDavid Lindsey Wade. N.d. Photograph. The Wade BrothersWeb. 28 Jan 2014. <http://thewadebrothers.com/>.

After checking out the Wade Brother’s website, I noticed they had a variety of work. They worked with many different companies to do their ads and commericials. I was going to use them to study editorial; commercial things, but I came accross one of their personal projects. It was called “The Birds,” which I soon figured out was designed with Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds in mind. Their version is very dramatic and creepy, but it’s very original. I’m going to use their use of mimicry by showing my perspective on Disney Princess’ storylines. They also use pops of color in their very dark and creepy photos. I might take up this idea and make it my own.

Source 10: 30 Pictures from the past

Wain, Alex. "30 Unique And Must-See Photos From Our Past." So Bad, So Good. N.p., 30 May 2013. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://sobadsogood.com/2013/05/30/30-unique-and-compelling-photos-from-our-past/>.

All of the photos on this blog post are from important moments in history that were captured in photographs. I’m looking at them for inspiration for a photoshoot. I want to do something with a black and white, vintage style. These photos are candids also so I’m hoping to incorporate that also. I’m thinking about mimicing the idea of famous photographic memories and create my own memories in history with sets that I create.

Drue Boccuti Capstone.

Posted by Drue Boccuti in Capstone - Garvey - Wed on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at 7:40 pm

I didn’t know what to do for this project and it took me weeks to figure something out. Then I started thinking about the things I like or hobbies that I had but nothing really came to mind. But then the summer came up, and everyone knows how much I love the summer and being down the shore. Then from that I started thinking about my moms friend who always talks about the school that he teaches at. He always mentioned that the kids that he teaches have nothing and some of them are even homeless. So once I had that in my head, my mind started racing about all the possibilities for things that I can do to help this kids in some way. I had never did anything with a fundraiser and I’m not the person to speak up or be loud. But I talked to my friends and my mom and they helped me out and encouraged me to do so. So, I had to take the time to get ready to raise my voice and say something. I had to look up different kind of drives and what different materials I would need to raise. But once I did that the ball started rolling and I started my Capstone.

These are pictures from when I went to drop off the gifts from my first drive, the clothes that I collected and also the kids wrote me thank you notes.

Bibliography:

  • 1. "Fundraising Tips." Fundraising Tips. N.p., n.d. Web. 27 Jan. 2014.

This source will be really helpful for me with the whole fundraising aspect, basically my whole project.. Fundraising plays a huge part in my project so this source will give me so many ideas. This website has over 15 very different ideas for ways to get the word out. The great thing about this website is it doesn’t just have what to do, it explains effective ways to do so. So, thanks to this website I can get the word out over than using just the advisory memo. Everytime I’m stuck on getting a new idea I will just check this website so I can get more creative and make it effective.

  • 2. "Change Vs charity." Edge Fund. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2014.

This website is different from the first one because it doesn’t help me with ideas about fundraising but it explains how to keep the change going. Originally I just thought I would ask other students at the end of my presentation if anyone would want to do it next year. But this might not be as effective in the long run. I need to make all the students feel the same thing I felt when I heard about these kids so that they want to continue it on and on, year after year. Start small and then work up to make the most change possible. Thanks to this website I’m now thinking about adding pictures of the kids so everyone watching can hear their stories.

  • 3. "The Need for Warm Coats." One Warm Coat. N.p., 2011. Web. 28 Jan. 2014.

This website is an organization that is collecting jackets from all over. Even though they are all the way in California, where it’s warm all the time, they are still very effective. One thing that I learned from this website was the statistics of kids who need the jackets. Also, there is quotes from people who are apart of this website. Hearing what it did for the people who needed them and the people who helped them might change someones mind. These statistics will help me when presenting my findings because I didn’t realize how many kids need them. Hopefully these statistics will stick in at least one viewer's head in order for some of these needs to be met.

  • 4. Wendroff, Alan L. "The Master Event Timetable (METT)." Special Events: Proven Strategies for Nonprofit Fundraising. Hoboken, NJ: John Wiley & Sons, 2004. 23-29. Print.

In this chapter it was explaining The Master Event Timetable. I wish I would have known about this in the beginning of this process. This table will make me more organized for the next drives coming up, when I should make advisory memos and it will help me plan my presentation so that I won’t be cramming at the last second. I will never been trying to think of what is going to happen next. I’ve never thought about sending any thank you letters or saying a sincere thank you, but in this chapter that is one of the sections in the table. So, I got the idea that maybe I should include the pictures of the kids and write a thank you on a blog so all of those who donated can see the impact they made in everyones life.

  • 5. CraigslistFoundations. "Top Ten Fundraising Tips." YouTube. YouTube, 12 Aug. 2011. Web. 29 Jan. 2014.

This source refers back to a book called ‘Nonprofit Management 101’. I didn’t know about this book until after I watched this video. They covered a lot of the tips from the book but I’m going to go back and check out all the other tips. They mentioned a man by the name of Hank Rosso, and I’ve never heard of him before watching this video. He was referred to as the ‘Godfather of credentialed, respected, professional nonprofit employees.’ So this source was helpful in giving me more sources instead of actual tips like the other sources I have found.  I learned that there is a book all about Hank Rosso’s tips, ‘Hank Rosso's Achieving Excellence in Fund Raising”.  So just from this one source, I found two more books full of tips that people from all over the world use.

‘

  • 6. Bray, Ilona M. "How to Keep the Givers Giving." Effective Fundraising for Nonprofits : Real-world Strategies That Work. N.p.: n.p., 2005. 1-16. Print.

This chapter has five important subchapters and four of them are going to be very helpful. They are ‘Thank Your Supporters’, ‘Communicate Your Essential Message’, ‘Invite Supporters to Get More Involved’ and ‘Analyze Your Donor Base.’ Thanking the supporters is a major aspect that comes along with this protect and almost every source I found has said to do this. This website however gives me a clear example on what to write and what it should look like. I have been a little inconsistent with my advisory memos and they give a section for how often to mail your supporters, so I now have reminders set so I can send in my memos. These were two of the really important steps in this chapter.

  • 7. "Fundraising Detective." 'Fundraising Detective' N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2014.

I thought it would be nice to read from a blogpost, and see how this tips helped the person who wrote the blog post. Not only did they share their tips, but they posted ten different types of links for me. One that looked like it could be really helpful when I’m looking for feedback before starting a new drive was ‘Clairification’. I checked out the website and the woman who runs it has advice plastered all over the site. Just some of the advice she gave to other nonprofit organizers was helpful to me. Even if it was just a little motivation to not be afraid and just go for it. She also offers coaching and consulting and good pointers for when presenting. This way I know my powerpoint will be the best it can be.

  • 8. Reid, Ann. "Capstone Help!" Personal interview. 17 Dec. 2013.

I was telling Ann all about my capstone. I told her that I was able to put the word through the memo, but that I was nervous. She suggested putting the word out on social networks and telling everyone in school face to face to make a more effective announcement. After my first drive with the toys I went to her and told her how it went and that one of the little girls went crazy over the books. I asked her her opinion on a book drive and she thought it was brilliant and she encouraged me to do that for the next one. She has been so helpful and she always gives me her honest feedback which is really helpful.

  • 9. Nesbitt, Sara. "What Ideas Do You Have?" Personal interview. 13 Oct. 2013.

Before I even got the first drive started I went to Sara hopeless and confused. Sara was very helpful because she made a list for me with all of the things that I was interested in. Charity work wasn’t even on my mind, Sara remembered a story I told her about a homeless man and she was the one who suggested charity for my capstone. Once she said this both of our minds started racing and I told her about my mentor and where he teaches and how all of the kids are unfortunate and she thought that was an excellent idea. If it wasn’t for Sara I wouldn’t have this as my capstone and I wouldn’t of made a difference in all of those kids lives.

  • 10. "MEND Poverty." MEND Poverty. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014.

This website had five simple steps that got right to the point on how to have a successful drive. When I first got started I was on the website constantly to make sure that my first drive would be as successful as possible. I never did it before so I was really nervous that there wasn’t going to be enough toys and if I was going to be annoying by constantly reminding people to bring things in. But their second rules says exactly the opposite, don’t be shy to remind people to bring in what you’re asking for and just think of the final product. Every time I got nervous I just thought of the kids and how much they want the toys so that made me push through.

Daniel Varnis Capstone

Posted by Daniel Varnis in Capstone - Garvey - Wed on Monday, May 5, 2014 at 3:48 pm

Abstract
Before starting this Capstone project, I knew from the beginning that I wanted to pursue a project that would, in some way, benefit SLA. At first I was going to hold an 8K race/fun run on Kelly Drive to raise money, but after finding out the financial difficulties, I began to brainstorm other methods of fundraising. After some time I found that a partnership with the Phillies would be a great idea, considering they’re notorious for holding various fundraisers for schools/programs. From this process, I actually learned the difficulty of being a successful advertiser. Throughout the various problems I encountered through this process of setting up the fundraiser, I realized that successfully advertising a product requires a lot of persistence, a passion for the product, and a good personality!

This photo is the official logo for the Atlanta Braves through the Major League Baseball (MLB). I will be using this logo in the flyers that I will be made to advertise the fundraiser.  I don’t find any limitations with this photo, considering it’s the exact logo from the Atlanta Braves. I will probably being putting this picture to use across multiple mediums, some of which could be posters, advertisements, websites etc. Thinking about it, putting this logo on most of my things will be crucial if I really want to emphasize that this fundraiser is to help SLA through the Phillies and Citizens Bank Park as they play against the Atlanta Braves.

Caroline Davis, Personal Communication (E-Mail), January 8, 2014

In this email, I spoke with Ms. Davis about the status of my splash page. The splash place is where people can go online to purchase the tickets. At first we encountered an error with the website, it wasn’t loading. After a brief conversation, we solved the issue. We also discussed some other benefits that come along with this fundraiser. She said that if this fundraiser turns out to be a big hit, then there can be a lump sum amount of money to be directed towards Science Leadership Academy. Also, if we take into consideration that the Phillies have a HUGE rivalry against the braves, that may be a factor that brings in more ticket purchases, leading to more money for SLA!

Caroline Davis, Personal Communication (Telephone), December 12, 2013

This is when Caroline Davis, the leader of special events for the Phillies, contacted me say that she received my email. As we were talking on the phone, she explained to me that she thought this fundraising thing was a really good idea. She shared an electronic pamphlet with me that explained the requirements of a fundraiser. Ms. Davis explained to me that all of the necessary steps for a successful fundraiser can be found within that brochure/e-packet. Following the step-by-step procedure allowed me to get where I am today. As of right now, the fundraiser is in action and the website to purchase the tickets is live!

"Getting More Media Coverage for Fund Raising Activities." (n.d.): n. pag. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <http://www.directcontactpr.com/free-articles/article.src?ID=86>.

This is an online article that contains details on how to gain publicity for a fundraiser. As of right now, all I’ve done is make some posters and put the ad in SLA’s advisory announcements. This website suggests that in order to gain a good amount of publicity, it’d be useful to contact the news and media. Having them advertise the fundraiser will not only spread the word, but give the fundraiser the opportunity to exceed expectations. This website also contains a contact box where I can get in touch with a professional that will give me tips and tricks to gaining publicity for my fundraiser.

This brochure contains all of the information that I needed when organizing the fundraiser. For instance, I was able to pick the game date. I decided to go with April 16th, 2014 because it’s “Super Phanatic Night.” Ms. Davis explained to me again that all of the necessary steps for a successful fundraiser can be found within that brochure/e-packet. Following the step-by-step procedure allowed me to get where I am today. As of right now, the fundraiser is in action and the website to purchase the tickets is live! There are some other tips inside of the brochure that I will use to help make this capstone successful.

Phillies Special Events, Electronic Communication, December 5, 2014

This was the first email that I sent out to the Phillies. In this email, I gave some background information on me, SLA, and my capstone. I also requested information on holding a fundraiser. This was one of my first attempts at communicating with Caroline Davis. I received a call from Caroline Davis through Citizens Bank Park about 5-7 days after I sent the email out. The original email was a lot of begging and explaining the budget predicament that SLA is in the middle of due to the School District of Philadelphia’s budget cuts. They were completely accepting of the idea and were willing to hold the fundraiser!
