Chapter 1 (Isaac)



Isaac was 6 when his father died in the 50 gallon war. What was the fight over? 50 gallons of water. His mother also fought in the war, but she survived and went on to become a scientist. She became one of the world’s most respected scientists.It was 2078 and the population had drastically gone up. The world’s population clocked in at about 12 billion and resources were running thin quickly, especially water. Clean water has become so scarce that even the fishes must huddle in together and take short breaths to not take up all of the oxygen in the water because there is so little. Aside from America and Germany fighting over 50 gallons of water found in Japan, all countries are kind of tense. Gallons are never found randomly. They are harvested. And each country has a fair share based on their population. Japan harvested and hid fifty gallons in violation of their population. They had 450. They were only supposed to have 400. Even though many people hated the war, some loved it. Some felt like they needed it. It was a sort of population control. Many people were drafted. Although, the battle ended short when the two countries just decided to split it 25/25. Not as many people died, and it was a peaceful two years. Then the discovery of “Scrups” happened. And all humans were turning against each other so quick you would have thought they were enemies even before time. 


Isaac was now 8 years old and he lived in a tiny house along with his mother. He shook the black hair from his face and he walked into the kitchen. 


"Mami!" 


"Que?" 


"What are you eating?" 


"Steak." 


Isaac frowned, he knew that they were blessed with money but he wish she didn’t spend it on fresh food and eat it all. Both corners of her mouth scrunched up into a satisfied smile. Isaac had always heard "Eat healthy, you are what you eat ya know," from his abuela and he was always afraid his mom would turn into a steak. He never shared this fear with her because he didn't want to be labeled as a "dummy". She always called him that when she thought he made a stupid comment. His mother ate steak every night. Every morning. Every noon. And for snack, which was 6 times a day. And with each steak she ate, she drank a 8 ounce glass of orange juice and 2 ounces of water. Little Isaac walked up to his mother. 


“Can I have some?”, his eyes went wide. “BUT ONLY A LITTLE BIT!”


His mother jumped back and her right eyebrow scrunched up, “Que te pasa?! Why the hell are you yelling?!”


Isaac apologized as his mother cut a small piece of steak. Her eyes were rimmed with dark purle, and the sea of wrinkled invaded her eyes, creating saggy bags. Despite his mom being exhausted, he loved her because she still took the time to talk to him. She flashed him a tired smile as she fixed him a small plate of steak. He was glad he only asked for a little bit, he didn’t want to turn into a steak. 


“Lo siento, I forgot your fork!” Maribel stood up to run to the kitchen. 


“No te preocupes, I’ll get it,” little Isaac got up to grab a fork. As he went to grab the iron handle to the wooden drawer, he bit on his lip so that he wouldn’t gasp as draw flew open as the handle pulled out straight towards his hands. 


“Isaac? Are you okay?” his mother called. Worry was deep in her voice and she got up to move. Just then, Isaac came running through the door. Spoons, forks, and knives were flying through the air and they seemed to be chasing him. He ran back and forth, desperately trying to live when his mother brought a fist upon his cheek. Isaac blacked out, that’s all he remembered. 


He woke up on a soft bed, screaming. He mother ran into his bedroom and held him down. 


“Shhh! Shhh! Shhh! Ya cálmate!” she held his shoulders down as he panted. 


“What do you mean calm down already?! Did you see that mommy?! Did you see that?!” he pointed everywhere, he quickly became paranoid as the metal candle holder on the brown wooden dresser started to shake. He screamed and his mom put her hand over his mouth. 


“Shhh, the more calm you are, the less it happens. This was much easier when you were younger. I used to put medicine in your bottle just to calm you down,” she sat up on the bed and wiped the tears from his scared face. 


“Your father, used to laugh. He believed that he had everything a man wanted. A wife, a beautiful child, a good paying job. He didn’t mind. We knew you were always special. Especially because his jacket buttons always stuck to your back. It was easy to peel them off of course. But it was funny to see the rainbow of colors on your back.” She giggled. 


“You...you mean you knew I was a scrup?!” Isaac’s mouth twinged into a tight pout. 


“A what?” her right eye brow scrunched up. Isaac knew that look, but he didn’t care. 


“A screw up mom! A screw up!” he yelled, her temper came in quick and she slapped him so fast he didn’t even see the hand. Just heard a “whir” before he saw stars. She began to yell! 


“You are NOT a screw up Isaac! You are beautiful and you are special!” she saw the tears in his eyes and she calmed down. She didn’t like hitting him, even for disciplinary reasons. 


“We just, we just didn’t say anything because we thought we could keep it under control. We didn’t know what caused it at the time. We don’t know. But what we do know is, if people know then they will take you away from me.” 


She began to cry, streams of tears dressed her delicate face and she no longer looked tired. Just devistated. 


“I can’t have them take you away from me. I would die. I would just die. I wouldn’t know what to do!” She held on to Isaac and they cried together. 


“W-w-what do I do mami?” he held on to her hand. 


“I’ll show you,” she held up her right hand and a fork flew right into it. Isaac’s eyes went wide. 


“WHOA! YOU HAVE IT TOO?” Isaac almost passed out. This was too much excitement for one day. He damn near fainted. 


“Yes, come here. You can read well can’t you?” she pulled out a leather bound book. It was big, brown, and it had a metal lock on it. 


“Yes ma’am,” he said proudly. 


“I know you’re mature. I was waiting to give this to you, go in your room and read it,” she handed him the book. But he didn’t know the lock combination. It was a 7 slot lock and he didn’t know if he had to guess or what, and he flashed a worried look at his mother. She held out her right hand and the lock turned. The term “SOFRITO” came out and Isaac smiled. Only mami would do something like this. 


“Mom, anyone whose spanish will know this! Can’t I change it?” he pouted. 


“Yeah, here”, she held out her right hand again and made a fist. Something clicked and she rephrased the word into “ISAACYR”. 


“There, your name and the first initial of your father’s last name and the first initials of my last name. Better?” she looked proud. 


“Yes!” Isaac ran to his room and plopped on his bed. He opened the book, he appreciated the fact that his mom drew pictures for him to understand. 


Chapter 2 (Maribel’s Diary)


Dear Isaac, 


Hello, if you’re reading this, it means you’ve finally discovered that you are special. Like me. I might be retired now, and we’re probably living low because we are “special” and I need to teach you how to conceal your powers. Because if they are found, we will both be killed. Please read this, and learn a lot. This was from the studies that I did when I was still a scientist. Ok, here we go. 



Basically, we are of the magnet origin. It is ancient, and it’s just ONE of the many origins that people can come from. Not everyone in the family has it. Just you, me, your grandma, and her father. Basically, we have the power to magnetize and demagnetize ourselves. But with magic, comes science. I’ve done some experiments on myself and I realized that the reason why you are of magnet origin is partly my fault. You know how I always eat steak and drink orange juice? Well, those are my favorite things to eat and drink. The issue is, we are already born with an iron imbalance in our bodies because we are basically human magnets. You know what else has iron? Steak. And do you know what an orange has? Vitamin C. Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron and I pretty much ate this while I was pregant with you. I’m so sorry Isaac, please forgive me for burdening you. ❤


Okay, here’s a simple diagram: 





Okay honey, as you can see, we have a crap load of iron in us. Therefore, at will, we can become super magnetic. Here are things you need to know: 


  1. Even if you want to panic, don’t. You will pull all of the metal to yourself or push it away. 
  2. Befriend people of different origins. If you want, I can introduce you to some. 
  3. Befriend people of similar origins. Here’s a chart of how they’re broken down.

Magnetic (attracts metal)

Life (healers)

Electricity (Good at fighting, can summon electricity. Good for black outs)

Travelers (can fly/super speed)

Rockers (Manipulate Earth/Metal)

Starters (People who can summon fire)

Pushers (Can maipulate air to create “natural” disasters)

Chameleons (once they touch the earth they can blend in) 

Green thumbs (Can manipulate plants) 

Melters (People who just have the abilities to heat up things)

Airlocks (Can summon air) 


As people of the origins, our job is to simply keep the elements in balance and to keep the Earth safe from it’s people. We were supposed to live in peace. Now, for each origin there is a “mother” origin. The mother origins are the four elements. Earth, Water, Fire, and Air. And from these stem the “baby” origins. Such as us “Magnetics”. Now, where were weeeee oh yeah. How to magnetize! Here is a practice method: 


  1. Sit in a calm, quiet room. 
  2. Put a metallic object in front of you. 
  3. Close your eyes. 
  4. Breathe calmly in and out. In and out. 
  5. Grab the fork. When you touch it, focus on the energy going back and forth into the fork. 
  6. When you close your eyes, hold the fork in front of you. You will be able to see a bright blue outline of everything. Focus on the fork until all of it is light blue. 
  7. Mentally tell it to push away. 
  8. Let go. 
  9. If it drops, you need to practice some more. 
  10. Once you master that, you can mentally “demagnitize” yourself. 
  11. Hold the fork until it’s blue again. Now, focus all the energy away until it’s faint blue again. 
  12. Drop it. 
  13. You won’t attract any metal unless you want to. 
  14. What the hell are you waiting for? Go try it! 


Isaac was excited. He jumped out of his bed and ran to the door and screamed when he saw his mom standing there with a fork. 


“Here!” she threw the fork at him and he screamed and put his hands up. The metal flew to his hand. 


“Okay, here’s one thing. As magnetics, we can only pull or push. There is no floating or suspending in the air. That’s what the Rockers are for. Now, try to pull that spoon over here. Remember the guide. Y por favor, no te grites.” she pouted. 


“Okay I won’t scream,” He sat on the floor and closed his eyes. He breathed in and out. In and out. He could feel his body gathering energy and soon he could see the outline of every little thing in the room. He focused on the little spoon on the marble counter and soon it began to turn bright blue. He thought “COME” and in a flash he felt the spoon smack into his hand. 


“Whoa I did it!” Isaac jumped up and down.


“Great, now, time to ea-,” she stopped in mid sentence. Isaac could see blood drip on the floor. 


“MAMI!” he screamed to deaf ears. Dead ears. He saw her body fly to the ground and he held out his hand in panic. Her book flew to his hand as he backed in a corner and screamed. Tears flew to his face. He panicked, his body drenched in sweat and a little urine trickled. Four men in army uniforms started to walk towards him. The strongest one, the most muscular spoke up first. 


“I don’t know Hank. He’s just a kid. Do we have to kill him? We could just collect him.”


The smallest one, who was supposedly the leader shot back: 


“Orders were, annihilate any scrups. Shoot him.” 


The men readied their guns and shot. Isaac screamed and put his hands up and all of a sudden the shots stopped. All he could he was four dead men who looked like bloody swiss cheese then he was whirred away. All he saw was a flash of his neighborhood and his house getting smaller and the next thing he knew he was in a room. He looked up and there was an African American kid. 


“W-w-what are you DOING?” Isaac began to stand up but he fell again. He was dizzy. 


“Calm down dude, that’s gonna happen. Hi. My name’s Connor and I like Star Wars. Everyone get’s dizzy when I drive them!” Connor was 8 years old at that time and full of energy. 


“H-h-h-hi. My name’s Isaac. I’m a m-m-..,” Isaac couldn’t stop stuttering out of fear. 


“Magnetic? Yeah. I know. We all know. You’re mom used to be one of the big guys.”, Connor stood Isaace up and supported him on his shoulder. 


“We all?” Isaac looked around. They were in a little shack. Connor pulled open a wooden plank and there was a stair case. Connor led Isaac down. 


“Common dude! This is so cool! You’ll get to meet my mom, Jennifer, and all my friends!”. 


As they slowly walked down the dark, spiral stair case, Isaac began to whimper and cry. 


“I-it’s okay! You don’t have to cry! Please don’t cry!” Connor tried his best to calm Isaac down but to no avail. The loss of his mother was too much to bare. He trudged down the stairs to a big ice door. It was frozen solid. White, frozen, solid. 


Connor yelled out “Jennifer!” and the ice magically melted. A nine year old white girl was on the other side. 


“Aw, why is he crying?” she pouted. Behind her, a quick “whir” and a tall slender black woman popped up in front of her. 


“Connor what the hell were you THINKING?” she yelled at him as he hung his head. 


“I was… I got Miss Maribel’s kid. She…,” little Connor didn’t even need to finish the sentence till his mother’s hard scowl softened. 


“Oh, oh you poor baby!” she lifted Isaac in her arms and he let her. He cried on her shoulder and she held him tightly. He looked around with his tear-blurry eyes and sniffled. The room was white with blue lights. The carpet and the couches were white where as the tables and chairs were blue. There were people of all ages staring at him. 


Miss Lana set him down. “Would ya like some water honey?”, Isaacs eyes went wide with surprise. 


“You can have juice, but water is illegal to have! Who are you people?!.” Lana gave him a warm smile. 


“We are you, and you’re one of us. Jennifer!”, Jenny came with an empty cup and drew her right hand up she pulled the moisture out of the air and poured it into the cup. The cup got frosty. She handed it to a now very thirsy Isaac. Miss Lana introduced them all. 


“This is Jennifer. Her origin is Aqua Mage, Mother Origin is water. And this is Connor. He’s a traveler, as you know he can run really fast and he makes trouble. Listen, I’m really sorry about your mother… she meant a lot to everyone here as well.” Lana held on to his shoulder. Isaac looked up with red puffy eyes. 


“Why did they kill my mom? We didn’t do anything!” tears were streaming down Isaac’s face. Lana picked him up gently and took him into a small white room, she closed the door behind her to shield them from staring eyes. 


“The government sees her as a threat. They don’t like people like us. It’s just that, I’m scared for them.” she said, her eyes looked down with sorrow. 


“Why?” 


“Well. Have you ever heard of the term “You are your worst enemy?”” She scrunched her eye brows up. 


“Yes! My mom used to say it all the time!” 


“Well, they will destroy themselves eventually. But, it’s up to us to protect our people. SNS. Suspernatural Society.”


Isaac felt a sort of proudness. He quietly got up, walked to the door, opened it and looked out. 


“Hi” he said, “I’m Isaac”. 


Chapter 3 (2082)




 Isaac was now ten, even 2 years later his mother’s death still affected him. He walked out of a medium red house. That’s where all of the members of the SNS stayed. He walked down the sidewalk to the corner of the 56 septa bus. As it arrived he read some graffiti on the side “No Scrups”. Isaac was scared, but he remembered what his mother said. Be careful, and breathe. He breathed and got on the bus. He sat near the door, that’s where he always felt safe. A strange old lady, wrinkled to the bone began to chant something. He couldn’t hear it until she started to speak up: 


“No Scrups! No Scrups! No Scrups!”, by that point everyone in the bus decided to chime in, getting louder in unison.  


“NO SCRUPS! NO SCRUPS! NOOOOOO SCRUUUUPS!”, Isaac was getting nervous. His palms were sweaty, his eye brows scrunched up, his face in a frown. He closed his fists and the bus stopped. People’s chants died down and gasps went all around. The old crone whispered: 


“There’s a scrup in here...everyone off the bus!” everyone ran out of the doors. Scared. Nervous. Violent. The outside of the bus was crunched. People scattered in all directions, women, men, children, even the old wrinkled prune seemed to gain speed as if she were 30 years younger. Isaac ran down the street to Erie and Torresdale to catch the EL to school. He was happy to finally make it. After he got on his long ride, he hopped off at 13 street and took a trolley to 22nd. As he went up the stairs, he could hear the same chants. He walked in on a crowd who were protesting intergrated schools. He ran past them and went to greenfield. He was about ten minutes late as he slammed into the seat of his first class, sweaty, nervous. His teacher Miss Mara scolded him for being late. He tried to explain but she wouldn’t have it. She made him sit up front, and the school bully Johnathon threw spit balls at him. Isaac was young, but he was old enough to know what happens. When a fight is going on, the kid that is the most in trouble is the one that retaliates. Isaac looked at his teacher and pretended to pay attention, but he changed his focus. He instead, saw a dull blue light around his teacher, but he could feel the intensity of the metal desk behind him. Jonathon teetered back in his desk and Isaac made himself negative between himself and the desk, pushing it back. Johnathon began to cry as Isaac smiled. He ran his fingers through his hair, it was oily. He figured he could get Connor to rush him home and wash it real quick, but he changed his mind. Jennifer was in his class as well, as Jonathon fell, Jenny flashed Isaac a smile. She was trying so hard not to laugh. After a daunting 45 minutes, the bell rang and all of the kids ran out into the hallway for their next class. 


“Hey!” Jennifer yelled as she ran up. “Happy Birthday!” she smiled. 


“Wanna skip?” Isaac inquired. He was so tired. A friend of theirs, Harry ran up as well. 


“You can count me in! Hey, did you guys hear?” Isaac and Jenny looked confused. Harry decided to elaborate. “They killed him! They took him away and they finally killed him!” 


“Who?” Isaac was curious! 


“That Scrup!” he pulled out his hollogram phone and showed him a picture of an Asian man. His hair was scruffy, but that face looked familiar. No. Isaac couldn’t and would not believe it. His dad died in the war. But this man looked so familiar. No. Isaac’s dad died in a war. 


“D-d-didn’t he die in a war?” Isaac was in shock. 


“Heck no! My mom told me they got him while the war was going on. He’s on a death sentence. But they finally killed him! Isn’t that great? Hung him in front of everyone! They said he was the laaaaaast one that they knew about. They killed his wife already. They’re just looking for the kid! Well, I gotta go!” and proud Harry ran away. Isaac laid himself upon the wall. Shaking. 


“We have to go home!” and just then a “whir” came by and Connor was standing 2 inches from Isaac’s face.


“I can get you guys there!” and the “beep” of an announcement went on. They stopped to listen. 


“Attention! Attention! News reports have stated that a SNS house was found and cleared out! Soldiers have eleminated the threats, along with their leader Lana Johnson!”. 


Connor’s heart took no time to break. Connor grabbed Jennifer and Isaac tightly and ran with all of his might to the house. It was on fire. Wood and metal were everywhere and Jennifer held out her hands and frosted everyone’s skin. 


“It helps. You won’t burn or even feel hot. My grandma taught me that”. All three of them slowly walked in. 


“My father…. was alive.” Isaac whispered. Tears running down his face. He was sad, not only because he didn’t know his father. But because he heard what happened to prisoners through Harry as well. And from the bruises and lash marks that he witnessed in the picture, it didn’t look like he had it easy. Connor began to cry as well. He kneeled down and held a burnt black hand, he washed it in his never ending agony. 


“Mama….” but alas, he had no time to mourn as five soldiers with masks and fire proof suits came in. They all held their guns and began to shoot. Isaac made himself negative and flew the bullets their way, killing all five. 


“Connor! Take Jennifer and go!” Isaac pulled all the metal towards him. Jennifer screamed:


“No, we’re not leaving! We got to stick together. Remember?” she frowned, she had no parents and Connor and Isaac were like brothers to her. “REMEM-” and Connor whirred her away after giving Isaac a strong and lasting hug. 


Chapter 4 



Isaac was brought before a crowd in Ritten House. Whipped. Bloodied. Dirty. Skin black from the ash. Through his chewed up ears he could hear: 


“NO SCRUPS! NO SCRUPS! NO SCRUPS!” 


He could also hear a group of women who were upset: 


“NO! He’s just a child! He’s just a child!” 


They brought him onto a stage in front of everyone and through him over a cold wooden block. A big man with an axe came by and made a speech. 


“Dear ladies, and gentlemen. These “Scrups” are nothing but trouble. They think they’re better than us, stronger, and more deserving of life just because they have powers. We have a child here. The child of the two leaders of SNS. Maribel Rodriguez and Ichiro Akiyama. The child of disgusting scum who didn’t deserve to walk the Earth.” 


A lady yelled out “They were SOLDIERS. They FOUGHT for this COUNTRY! You are the real scum!” 


The man simply replied with “Shut the hell up you prune. Bring her up here.” two soldiers dragged her up to the wooden block and slammed her down as well. 



The man cleared his throat, “As I was saying, as humans, we are supposed to take care of this world. And today, we will make progress. Look at this boy and his scum follower! This is the enemy! This is what we must kill! They are the reason for sickness, global warming, the pain and agony that we endure every day! It’s ALL THEM!” 


And with that, he brought down the axe. The head of the old woman ended up in the middle of the crowd and they all screamed a yell of joy as her blood sprayed on the grass. 


“Goodbye devil child”, the man brought up his axe and-

A ten year old girl with brown curly hair closed the book. She ran out to the living room to her mother. Her father ran after her: 


“Clara, CLARA! Give me that book! JENNIFER COME AND GET THIS GIRL!”. Clara’s mother softly got up from the couch. 


“Connor what’s wrong now?” she inquired. She was tired. 


“Did this really happen?” she breathed in and out. She never read something so scary. Her mother sat her upon her lap. 


“No honey, of course not.” She rocked Clara back and forth until she fell asleep. She gave Clara to Connor and in 1 second Connor came back. 


“You tucked her in and all?” Jennifer asked. 


“Yes. Was one second too long for you?” and he tried to smile but it didn’t cheer Jennifer up. 


“Where did she find that book Connor? I… I hid it away. I didn’t want to remember. I didn’t want to remember being in that crowd. Seeing Isaac… for God’s sake he was only ten Connor! Only ten! How many other children did they need to murder before they got their point across? Just for being a magnetic? For being a “scrup”? We even have to hide today Connor. When will they stop hating us?” Jennifer’s face became coated in tears. 


“Just because he was a child, he had a hard time controlling it. Just because he was special. They killed him. Did they have to?” Jennifer mumbled. 


Connor held her frail body and hummed until she calmed down. 


“I know honey. I know. We just need to keep hiding. Ok? They can’t just tell if we have powers. We’ve had a nice life so far ok? And our baby was born normal. You don’t have to worry. Even if we were found out. I’ll protect you and Clara with all my life.” 


Jennifer sniffled and she smiled. “Yeah, at least Clara is normal.” 


It was just then she realized that Clara had just walked in. She was scared. 


“Mommy?” tears were in her eyes. Her body was shaking. She jumped into her parents’ arms. 


“Yes honey what’s wrong?” Jennifer began to sweat. Hoping her daughter didn’t hear the conversation. Her daughter held up her right hand, and a spoon began to float. Jenny’s eyes went wide with fear. She whispered: 


“A r-r-rocker!” Jennifer exclaimed. 


“M-m-mommy, some kids at school saw. My t-t-teacher knows”. Clara couldn’t stop stuttering. She wasn’t ignorant to the world. She knew.


Jennifer and Connor looked at each other as they heard a knock on the door. As Connor stood up to hold Clara and Jennifer to escape, the door flew inwards and broke open.

“Taming of the shrew” was play were almost all of the relationships involved lying. In the movie “LOL” a lot of the relationships were also started or ended because of lying.  However, although in “LOL” a lot of lies flew through the air like in the book, relationships became stronger through trust, not with lies. Compared to Taming of the shrew, were lying didn’t affect the characters relationships, LOL reflects that today trust is a key thing in relationships.

In the beginning scene of the movie, Lola finds out that her current boyfriend, Chase, has lied to her and cheated.

The lack of trust between the two broke them apart, instead or keeping them together. Since Lola knew that Chase could no longer be trusted, and the trust between them was totally gone, so she knew she had nothing to work with in her relationship. However, in Taming of the shrew, lies actually helped Lucentio gain a relationship with Bianca:


Act 1 sc 1 pg 43: “Tell me thine first...you will be schoolmaster”


Lucentio lied about who he really was, being able to get closer to Bianca. When he told her the truth, she was not concerned about the fact he lied to her father, friends, everyone- including herself. She was more impressed by the scheme. Compared to LOL, lack of trust and lies gained the characters a relationship, instead of losing them.


Lies weren’t just told to boyfriends or girlfriends either- the characters also lied to the parents in the play or movie a lot too-

Lola lied to her mother about different events in the movie, including the party she had, whether she had sex or not, and whether she was doing drugs. When her mother found out, the trust between them was gone and their relationship began to slowly die. In the scene were Lola’s mom found her diary, their relationship was forever scarred.


In contrast, in Taming of the shrew Lucentio lied to his father and Bianca’s father and their relationship was not affected at all.


Act 5 Scene 1 : “Here’s Lucentio, right son to the right Vincentio,

That have by marriage made thy daughter mine

While counterfeit supposes bleared thine eyne.”


Lucentio was supposed to be in school at the time, and instead lied to his father and Bianca’s. However, by the end of the book when Lucentio revealed himself, Baptista or his father were not mad or angry. His father instead seemed happy to see him, regardless of that fact that he disobeyed him, lied to everyone in town about who he was, and just made his father look crazy in public. This shows the deep contrast between that time and today- during shakespeare's time trust was hard to loose,  but today trust is easily lost and hard to get back.


Lucentio, and other characters, seemed to get off easy in the play when they lied. However, lying it is different today. Lola had a hard time during the whole movie because it was hard to tell who she could trust. Many of her boyfriends seemed to be cheating on her, and the lack of trust she had with the different characters just destroyed some of her relationships. However, she gained friends when she learned to trust them- even her rival, who finally spoke the truth at the end of the movie. This reinforces the belief that an audience wants to see the trusty friend to win in the end, and the unfaithful, lying rival to lose and be taught a lesson.

Comparing “The Taming of the Shrew” to “Stranger Than Fiction”


With today’s ideals in mind, most people would assume that love comes before marriage. The opposite is the case in The Taming of the Shrew.  The protagonist, Petruchio, gets married to Katherine in the beginning of the play without really knowing her. The marriage was for his own financial gains and also so two other suitors could have the ability to marry Katherine’s sister, Bianca. At the end of the play, after a score of mental games played by Petruchio to “tame” Katherine, she gives a long, emotional speech that displays her love for him and he goes on to tell of his love for her.

Stranger Than Fiction revolves around Harold Crick, an IRS agent who lives a monotonous, receptive and droll life. One day, everything changes. He begins to hear an author in his head narrating his life to extraordinary accuracy. He recognizes the voice to be that of a famous author he once saw on television. The author reveals that Harold is going to die and he has to find her and convince her to change the end of the story (and his life) before it’s too late. At the same time, Harold takes on the task of auditing a baker, Ana Pascal. Harold is uncomfortable with the narrations made by the author when he’s around Ms. Pascal. The author makes Harold realize that he’s subconsciously falling in love with her. Romantic love is approached differently by both men in both scenarios. This shows that romantic love is approached differently in today’s society.


In Act Two: Scene 1 of Taming of the Shrew, Petruchio says, “What, with my tongue in your tail? nay, come again, Good Kate; I am a gentleman.”


This is a quote from when Petruchio is first meeting Katherine. He is crude and inappropriate at first, intentionally. He is trying to be funny. This was Shakespeare’s version of comedy. Petruchio is aware that Katherine is known as the mean sister and takes a jab at her sense of humor or perhaps just tries to make her feel uncomfortable. Petruchio goes on to confirm that he was just kidding and he tries to show her that he is a respectable man. Harold Crick is in a similar situation. He runs into Ana Pascal on a bus and tries to interact with her in a non-auditing manner.

Harold: How are you?

Ana: I’m lousy, I’m being audited

Harold: Of course

Ana: By a real creep too

Harold: I- I think I owe you an apology. IRS agents, we’re given rigorous aptitude tests before we can work. Unfortunately for you we aren’t tested on tact or good manner so I apologize... I... Ooggled you.

In this short exchange of dialogue, Harold attempts to show Ana that he’s a respectable man by apologizing for an incident that happened a few days prior in which he began to fantasize about her and blatantly stare at her breasts. Harold’s crude actions weren’t intentional, like Petruchio’s. Because this movie takes place about four hundred years after all of Shakespeare’s plays were written, courtship is approached very differently by the two men.


In Act One: Scene 1 of Taming of the Shrew, Hortensio says, “There's small choice in rotten apples.”


Hortensio and Gremio are the two suitors that are going after Bianca, Katherine’s younger sister. Hortensio and Gremio are friends and they have to work together to get past the only obstacle in their way: Bianca cannot get married until Katherine gets married. They have to narrow down the already small pool of men who would be willing to marry her for them, so they could achieve their goals. In the beginning of Stranger Than Fiction, Harold Crick goes to a therapist about the voice in his head. The therapist listens to him and then tells him she thinks he’s schizophrenic. He tells her that he isn’t schizophrenic and she tells him that if his condition were real, she’d refer him to a literary expert. Harold then goes to Professor Jules Hilbert, a Literature Theory professor. After Professor Hilbert agrees to help Harold, he explains the theory that all works of fiction can be narrowed down to two categories: Comedy and Tragedy. He explains it in simple terms to Harold, “Tragedy you die, Comedy you get hitched.” They go on to try to figure out which story Harold is living in.


Professor Hilbert: Most comic heroes fall in love with people who are introduced after the story has begun, usually people who hate the hero initially. Although I can’t imagine anyone hating you, Harold.

Harold: Professor Hilbert, I’m an IRS agent. Everyone hates me.

Professor Hilbert: Ah ah good, have you met anyone recently who might loathe the very core of you?

Harold: I just started auditing a woman who told me to get bent.

Professor Hilbert: Well that sounds like a comedy.

Similarly to Hortensio and Gremio, Harold and Professor Hilbert are trying to narrow down a pool of possible people. In The Taming of the Shrew they’re looking for a man to marry Katherine. In Stranger Than Fiction they’re looking for the possible love interest that would determine whether Harold is living a Comedy or a Tragedy. He later goes to Ms. Pascal’s bakery with a small moleskine journal that he uses to record the instances that would make the story a one of the two defining genres. He spends the whole day going through Ana Pascal’s receipts while she spends the whole day making sure his day is awful. He chalks his story up to being a Tragedy. When he’s on his way out, Ana makes him cookies and they spend time talking. Harold upsets her by turning down a box for the rest of the cookies and feels terrible about it. Days later he can’t get the smell of cookies or the thought of Ms. Pascal out of his head. It starts to affect his work and they give him a paid vacation that he spends trying to court her.

By the end of the movie, Harold and Ana are in love. By the end of Taming of the Shrew, Petruchio and Katherine are in love. Both men achieve their end goal while pursuing it in vastly different ways. If Harold Crick had approached Ana Pascal in the same way that Petruchio did with Katherine, the movie would have been very different and they most likely would not have fallen in love. In Petruchio’s time, his tactics were commonplace. That goes to show how much society has changed in the last 400 years.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding::Taming of the Shrew


My Big Fat Greek Wedding contains characters that are similar to ones in Taming of the Shrew. Maria Portokalos, the mother in MBFGW, has an issue with the way her husband, Gus, thinks. Gus believes that he is superior, however, he doesn’t know that his wife really has the upper hand in the relationship. MBFGW and Taming of the Shrew relate to each other because Maria and Katherine give their husbands what they want, but sneak in their own rules as well.




Katherine: “Then God be blest, it is the blessed sun.

                 But sun it is not, when you say it is not,

                 And the moon changes even as your mind.

                 What you will have it names, even that it is,

                 And so it shall be so for Katherine.” (IV.vi.21-15)


Petruchio is arguing with Katherine because he says that the moon is the sun and she disagrees. She eventually gives in and makes him feel empowered. Then she replies back with a statement that should’ve insulted Petruchio, but instead makes his ego larger.

In this scene, Maria and her sister, Voula, wanted to trick Gus into letting his daughter, Toula, leave work at their restaurant, Dancing Zorba’s, to go work at Voula’s travel agency. In order to do that they had to make him believe that it was his idea. Their plan worked when Gus pointed at Tula (the one with the coffee in her hand) and said, “Send Tula!” Maria praised Gus as he bragged about how a man “knows.”


KATHERINE: “If I be waspish, best beware my sting.” (II.i.223)


Katherine is explaining that she will not be submissive and Petruchio is saying that women should always have submissiveness. Katherine is relentless, so she kept going on about how “waspish” she can be.

In this scene, Maria is making her point to Gus that women can be smarter than men, after he mistakenly said that his daughter, Tula, is “smart enough for a woman.” Once she begins to give examples of how powerful she is, Gus silences and Maria gets her superiority in the relationship. Maria’s stance shows her control in this scene and possibly the whole movie. The position of Gus’s head shows that he is not the dominant one in the relationship.



Characters like Katherine and Petruchio, in Taming of the Shrew, and Maria and Gus, in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, completely relate to each other because they all play similar roles. Maria and Kate both can be submissive, but always sneak a level of authority into their relationship. Gus and Petruchio think that they “rule” their wives, but also know that their wives have the ability to be powerful and take the lead.

Comparing and contrasting the deceptions versus honesty of marriage between the film, “35 & Ticking” and Shakespeare's “Taming of the Shrew”.



After reading Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew”, readers’ minds are implanted with the idea that romantic love is a myth. If this is the case, what is the point of marriage? Shakespeare’s “Shrew” argues control, the thrill of the journey, etc. Although couples in both “Shrew” and the 2011 film, “35 and Ticking” come to grips with their tactics differently, they covertly bestow the idea that the importance of marriage is resorting to the drastic measures of deception over honesty in order to obtain what one desires most from the other.



In “Shrew”, Petruchio forces Katherine into marrying him. On the day of their wedding, he carries her off to his home where he starves, manipulates, beats and humiliates her and, on top of that, deprives her of sleep in the sense of actually “taming” her–to her demise, of course. In the end of the book, Katherine recognizes Petruchio’s hostility as a means of love and breaking her bad habits to make her the dutiful wife that women of that era were expected to be. All along, however, Petruchio went after Katherine for her fortune, as he is a man of greed rather than romance. A similar couple: Victoria and Austin, In “35 and Ticking”, have been married for 3 years. Only this time it is the wife Victoria who is deceiving her distant husband to get what she wants from him–children. In the end, Victoria fails at this and unfortunately loses Austin. Both text, aside from the distinct humor of their times, relate as they reflect the idea that for centuries, couples believe that whether romantic love exists or not, deception is the only route to self-success in a marriage because the deceiver is the dominant partner.



“If thou know one rich enough to be Petruchio’s wife,

(As wealth is burden of my wooing dance),

Be she as foul as was Flourentius’s love,

As old as Sibyl, and as curst and shrewd

As Socrates’ Xanthippe, or a worse,

She moves me not, or not moves at least

Affection’s edge in me, were she as rough

as are the swelling Adriatic seas.

I come to wive it wealthily in Padua;

If wealthy, then happily in Padua.”

(Act I, Scene ii, 66-77)

At this point in the play, Petruchio and his servant arrive in Padua and is convinced by his friend Hortensio to woo Baptista’s eldest and shrew of a daughter–Katherine. Petruchio, learns that Katherine is very rich and tells Hortensio that no matter how old, ugly or rude a woman is, as long as she is rich, she qualifies as the perfect wife for him. It is here that Petruchio reveals that his only intention in life is to wed wealth rather than a wife. He is straightforward and honest about his selfishness and his unconcern for romance to everyone except the Baptista family, especially Katherine. He instead woos her and tricks her into believing he is truly in love with her. This is Petruchio’s best chance at succeeding in his scheme.


In “35 and Ticking”, Victoria is revealed as the Petruchio of her marriage as her and Austin have continuous heated discussions on whether it is time to start a family together or not.

In this scene, Victoria complains that at she does want to wait until she is 40 while Austin claims she is putting too much pressure on him and rushing into having a baby. Victoria argues that, “Do you know how degrading, how embarrassing it is to have to beg someone you committed your entire life to to have a baby? The fact is, I’m ready to start a family.” To her surprise, Austin says, “I am tired of you putting so much pressure on me. I can’t even enjoy having sex with you because I feel like you’re trying to set me up. Fact number one, I know your body better than you do. I know what time of the month you’re ovulating and that’s when you really put pressure on me to have sex with you.”

The scene ends with Austin saying one of the reasons he does not want to have a baby is because he isn’t sure how long they’re going to be married. Victoria, denying nothing, stands speechless as Austin walks out. In this scene, Victoria is called out on her scheme whereas her shrew of a husband does not submit to her deception and instead admits he is unsure of their marriage. Victoria, having already felt distant from Austin, thought that enforcing a child into their marriage would make them stronger as a couple. Though instead of being honest with him about it, she thought she could deceive him to accomplish her “power couple” goal.



Katherine, “I know it is the sun that shines so bright.”

Petruchio, “I say it is the moon.”

Katherine, “I know it is the moon.”

Petruchio, “Nay, you lie. It is the blesséd sun.

Katherine, “Then God be blest, it is the blesséd sun.

But sun it is not when you say it is not,

And the moon changes as your mind.”

(Act IV, Scene vi, 5-21)

By now in the play, Petruchio is pulling the strings on Katherine’s view on reality in the form of celestial events. Only it is now Katherine deceiving her husband, allowing her soul to play possum in order to please Petruchio and put an end to his merciless acts against her. This tactic is Petruchio’s way to tame his shrew of a wife into being obedient. Earlier in the play, the two would debate such as this and Katherine, blind of his schemes, would disagree and argue back. Now, she is the one pulling his strings, making him believe that he has tamed her well. Once Petruchio is convinced, Katherine will have achieved repossession of her own freedom.



Both the roles and the outcomes of and the deceivers of the marriage are reversed in the film, as Austin reacts to Victoria’s deception.

Austin comes home to see Victoria has packed his bag of clothes which is her way of telling him to leave the house. Austin replays his statement to Victoria from earlier, “The real reason I don’t want to have a baby with you, is because I don’t know how long I’m going to be married to you.” As he says this, he takes off his wedding ring and places it on the bed.

In their next scene, Victoria calls Austin and begs him to come home, upset  that he’s not coming home at all instead of apologizing and submitting to her, as she expected. Now Austin has become Petruchio and Victoria has become Katherine. While she has diminished to begging and submission, Austin, as Petruchio did to Katherine, deprives her of health–a healthy heart. Victoria is now the one in need of taming–at least this is how she believes Austin sees her. If the shoe fits, she must wear it. Victoria has failed indefinitely.



“Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper,

Thy head, thy sovereign, one that cares for thee,

And for thy maintenance commits his body

To painful labour both by sea and land,

To watch the night in storms, the day in cold,

Whilst thou liest warm at home, secure and safe,

And craves no other tribute at thy hands

But love, fair looks, and true obedience,

Too little payment for so great a debt.”

(Act V, Scene ii, 140-183)

At the end of the play, Katherine submits indefinitely to Petruchio, with a changed view on what marriage means and the status of women versus men–whom she now recognizes as rulers such as: kings, governors and lords. Katherine honors  Petruchio as a loving, warm and securing husband and to love and obey is the least a woman can do for their husbands who are loving, warm and securing. Both Katherine and Petruchio have achieved their initial goals. Katherine has gained Petruchio’s ultimate trust and thus her freedom while Petruchio, although already has her money, has earned Katherine’s obedience, love and respect. This once “shrewd” couple supports the idea that deception equals success.


However, “35 & Ticking”’s outcome on deception greatly differs.

Since Victoria and Austin’s dispute over family, his calling out on her scheme has abated her to the passive character Austin once was. In the end of the movie, Victoria signs the divorce papers. A year later, she sees Austin with a pregnant woman. He exchanges shrugs and pity looks at her while she cries at the sight. Austin, once realizing Victoria had deceived him, reclaims his dominance by dragging her to his feet as he moved on with another woman. Austin has tamed  Victoria, teaching her that the deceitful “baby trap” no longer works on men, and he will not stand to be the punchline of her joke.

It is also crucial to consider Austin the deceiver himself. After all, he had been hiding his doubts about the marriage, purposely becoming distant from Victoria, except when to have sex, and was eventually freed. Petruchio on the other hand, hid his true intentions for wedding Katherine, depriving her of all things critical to human beings, by not looking at her as a human being, but a sack of money. He even “justified” his acts by lying to Katherine that she could not eat because the food had been burnt and contaminated. Austin would justify his distance from Victoria by working late and go to the gym afterwards. In the end, both men got what they wanted through ultimate and disclosed deception.



The fact that both Victoria and Katherine yielded to their husbands is no  surprise the audience. For centuries women have been portrayed as weak and compliant partners, whereas Victoria’s character tried to prove so otherwise. Her failure and Katherine’s submission sets forth the idea that there are still men today who despise and wish to “tame” the spirit of strong women. By doing this, both Petruchio and Austin reclaimed their masculinity and succeeded in their own plans.

(Chennai Express, “Taming of the Shrew”)

Yeah, I say my title twice. 'Cause I'm awesome.


Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare was a masterpiece of its time, like most of Shakespeare's works, and the plot was heavily driven by a fathers involvement in his daughters’ marital status. This method of thought is closely tied to the modern Indian movie “Chennai Express”. In Taming of the Shrew, the character Baptista sets multiple challenges for potential suitors of his young and beautiful daughter, while in the movie “Chennai Express” the father, Durgeshwara, merely puts up a constant ever changing wall of intimidation so that only the suitor who is willing to keep up and succeed through the changing conditions will be allowed to marry the girl. Though the way that the fathers display their protection is different, both are trying to assure love for their daughters by dissuading suitors.



“That is, not to bestow my younger daughter before I have a husband for the elder.”

Baptista is a loving father, who merely wants what’s best for his daughters. However his eldest daughter, Katherine, is slightly sadistic, and enjoys the pain of others. In the second scene she’s in, she’s annoyed that she’ll be forced to marry. To release her anger,  Katherine ties her younger sister up, drags her around the house, and then slaps her in the face when she talks back. Naturally, all of the suitors were terrified that someone would have to marry her before anyone could court Bianca. Yet Baptista doesn’t seem to worry at all about his younger daughter losing any suitors because of the task he set before them. Baptista wouldn’t willingly try and harm his daughter’s prospects, he is instead trying to guarantee that only the ones who would actually attempt a risky task for his daughter would be able to get her.

In this scene Rahul meets the extended family of Meenalochni for the first time. In this scene the Rahul is introduced to Durgeshwara, or Durge,  as her fiance. Durge carries with him a passive intimidation, which serves the purpose of keeping anyone beneath him away. For Rahul, this is meant to assure that he is worthy even of being near Durge or his daughter Meena. Baptista had a more active interaction with the suitors while Durge is displaying a passive intimidation. Partly this is due to Baptista having multiple ellegible suitors for his daughter, while Durge had few. However, it’s also heavily dependant on Baptista merely being a merchant, while Durge was in the role of a local king. Baptista was passively intimidating class wise, but Durge had the military power to ensure that if he disliked someone they would be imprisoned for as long as he wished. Both fathers had different ways of intimidating suitors that weren’t good enough.



“Tis deeds must win the prize, and he of both that can assure my daughter greatest dower shall have my Bianca’s love.”

In this scene a conversation is being had with Katherine’s suitor. The conversation is strange, because in a society of arranged marriages love isn’t the a large deciding factor. However because Baptista cares about his daughter, he is willing to set a test for the suitor. While the test may seem simple, Baptista sets a test to judge the suitor, and doesn’t merely observe their interactions. In order to protect his daughter, Baptista takes an active role in protecting her.

Tangballi is a local leader who was arranged to marry Meena. Unbeknown to him, Durge had recently changed his mind and allowed her new suitor Rahul her hand in marriage. Tangballi arrived with the intention to marry Meena and was personally delivered information of this change directly by Durge. Durge did this as a test, to see how Tangaballi would react under such pressure. If he didn’t love Meena enough to try for her, he wouldn’t be worthy of her. Both Baptista and Durge are setting tests to see how suitors will act, but again Durge takes a more passive role, while Baptista takes a more active one.


“Ay,when the special thing is well obtained, that is, her love, for  that is all in all.”

This is from a conversation with a suitor of his younger daughter, Bianca. He’s trying to find out who’s able to help his daughter most, but also who is willing to give more to his daughter. He is saying that it is deeds that will win her, but in actuality it will go to the one who puts the biggest steak in the matter. Baptista wants his daughter to be supported by someone who is able to muster up the most resources for her.

Tangballi decided that the best way to prove his worthiness to Meena was to kill her suitor Rahul. Durge takes an active stance in this by preventing anyone from interfering with the fight. He even prevents his daughter from having a choice in it. He is purely interested in who is willing stake their life on the decision. Both Baptista and Duge have suitors battle, but they make the suitors fight on fields that the father is comfortable on. The merchant Baptista makes them fight over money, while the local lord Durge makes them fight to the death.


In both “Taming of the Shrew” and Chennai Express, though the focus was on the main characters, the plots were mostly shaped by the decisions of the parents. The actions of the characters are made to placate or impress the elders, and every move the elders make causes rippling consequences throughout the story. They both come from different stories, “Taming of the Shrew” being focused on the the trials faced by characters, and Chennai Express being focused on the interaction between the lovers, and the parent is more passive.  Both Baptista and Durge try and protect their children by setting tests for them, tests that range from tests of love and reactions to pure merit, whether it’s in the form of a fight or of the amount of money available.

The Lying Game

Comparing “The Taming of the Shrew” to “He’s Mine, Not Yours”



In the play of “The Taming of the Shrew”, characters from centuries ago, portray their idea of love by trying to win their lover with greed. The cocky and confident Petruchio insists of wifing the quick-tempered Katherine by using his power and money. The movie “He’s Mine, Not Yours” filmed in 2011 comes from a similar angle on their idea of love -- only it is a woman, Mandy, who is requested by another woman to use her power of her appearance to win the man.



Petruchio and Mandy share the same goals and mindsets in their predicaments, but the process on accomplishing these goals are different. Petruchio owning loads of money due to his father’s death, uses that to his advantage to go to Padua to wive a woman. Trying to win her over, Katherine’s stubborn personality causes her to resist the marriage, leaving Petruchio in a dispute. On the other hand, Mandy’s career is using the power of her looks as a career path to find out if “Prince Charmings” are cheaters. She is hired by Brooke who is in a perfect relationship with Kent, but was influenced by others that all men cheat. Mandy disguises herself to see if Kent will fall for her traps and cheat. These texts reflect that despite the gender, romance (genuine or not) can be created through lies and power.



“Signior Hortensio, ’twixt such friends as we

Few words suffice. And therefore, if thou know

One rich enough to be Petruchio’s wife,

As wealth is burden of my wooing dance...”


(Act 1, Scene 2, Lines 66-77)


In this quote, Petruchio is speaking to his dear friend from Padua, Hortensio. He is telling Hortensio that people like them who are rich and handsome can get away with things by only doing a bare minimum. All Petruchio is looking for is a rich woman and that is enough for him to start a romance. Petruchio is influenced by himself to take upon this risky idea of marrying someone by flaunting his wealth to his greatest measures through lies even if it might have consequences.



A similar conversation is shared between Brooke and her friend about her plan through advice and a warning, but Brooke doesn’t listen.

Sophia is strongly advising to Brooke that she shouldn’t hire the “Man Stealer” (Mandy) to spy on Kent. She strictly says, "Don't go looking for trouble; because people who go looking for trouble, they normally find it." Ignoring her advice, Brooke is convinced that all men cheat so she finds the Man Stealer. This shows that Mandy was specifically sent by Brooke to use her power to manipulate Kent. But since Mandy specializes in lying and using her power to get what she wants, she is confident that she will win Kent with no obstacles. Petruchio and Mandy feel like their plans will both go smoothly, but Petruchio doesn’t know what to expect. Mandy has done this a thousand times so she is already assuming it will be an open and close, easy case.




“Why, Petruchio is coming in a new hat and an old jerkin, a pair of old breeches thrice turned, a pair of boots that have been candle cases, one buckled, another laced; an old rusty sword ta'en out of the town armory, with a broken hilt and chapeless; with two broken points; his horse hipped, with an old mothy saddle and stirrups of no kindred...”


(Act 3, Scene 2, Lines 42-62)


Biondello is announcing that Petruchio is arriving to his own wedding to marry Katherine wearing outrageous things like non matching boots, an old vest, a rusty sword, and more. Petruchio has gained even more confidence due to others insisting that just because he comes from good money and he has all the right things to say to lure Katherine, that he can get away with showing up to his wedding dressing completely out of sorts. Petruchio thinks he can get away with anything and that as long as a person’s actions are a strong as their lies and deceitfulness, he can force a marriage on Katherine and call it a romance.



Mandy does the opposite by ending her plan early to tell Brooke that Kent is not a cheater. However, when she hears a shocking response, she resumes her evil plan.

Mandy meets up with Brooke to let her know that Kent passed the test, and he is loyal and commited. Assuming that Brooke would be happy about this, she is more angry because she feels like Mandy didn’t do a full enough investigation. Mandy angrily says, “Listen, I take men away from their women everyday. Its my job." While Petruchio takes it upon himself to be obnoxtious and use his powers to fool Katherine, it is Mandy’s job where she is requested to do such things. She knows her lies and appearances can get her far in her plan just as much as Petruchio’s wealth can do the same. Petruchio and Mandy are a little too confident that they can win their “lovers” through the acts they put on.

Petruchio gets a wife and Mandy walks away empty handed. Mandy let her emotions get the best of her and she personally ended up falling for Kent. Getting caught in the act, Mandy lost. Although one character was more accomplished than the other, both show the same deep meaning about love. Love can be created through power and lies whether it is genuine or not. Fooling someone works just as well as falling for someone to spark a romance.

Father’s Approval

Comparing "Taming of the Shrew" to "Coming to America"

Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew", starts out by showing the reader that in relationships parental interference plays a big role and is part of the root of a relationship. In "Taming of the Shrew" the father of Katherine and Bianca Batista, is the person that one must go through and satisfy in order to have his daughters hand in marriage. The leading man (Akeem) and lady (Lisa) in the 1988 movie “Coming to America” struggles with mating with the one that their true heart desires because of their parents. Akeem’s and Lisa’s father both want their child to marry the person of their choice. 

Although Baptisia, King Jeffe (Akeem’s father), and Cleo (Lisa’s father) already have their hearts set out on who and how their daughters/son should marry, each of their interest is set out in different directions. Baptisia has a role that the eldest daughter must get married first in order for the young to get married. King Jeffe wants his son to marry a woman who was raised to be an obedient queen of which he wants to choose for Hakeem. Cleo wants his daughter to be romantically involved with a man who has a lot of money. In this movie and play the parents have a big say therefore if they say no not much goes right. Although in both “Taming the Shrew” and the movie “Coming to America” the father figures have influence over their children's choice of their spouse, the two situations are different because the expectations in the movie are even higher than the ones in the play. This reflects that parents seem to be more involved in their children’s relationships today. 

In Act 1 scene 1 lines 48-54 of “Taming the Shrew”, in Batista's home two men name Lucentio and Hortensio come before Baptista to ask for his youngest daughter, Bianca’s hand in marriage. Baptisia walking into the scene with both daughter responds by saying “Gentlemen, importune me no farther, For how I firmly am resolved you know: That is not to bestow my youngest daughter Before I have a husband for the elder. If either of you both love  Katherine, Because I know you well and love you well, Leave shall you have to court her at your pleasure.”Basically what Baptista is saying that no one can persuade him from his final decision which is his the eldest daughter, Katherine must marry first before Bianca can get married. If one of them would like to take Katherine in order to get to Bianca they can. In the century of the book one had to pay for the bride to be ones so already in order to marry one would need to have  money. But Baptista wanted nothing more than for his first daughter to be married for the belief was if a women grew old with no husband she would wither away in hell. Baptista continued on by saying that since they are “friends” if they would like to have Katherine along with Bianca they could. Not caring what would happen to the both of them afterwards. They really wanted Bianca to begin with and even said so. As long as Katherine is married first is all he really cared about. Showing that nothing else really matters but that one thing. Though asking for Katherine to get married first is a big thing it is not as big as characterizing the spouse for Katherine and Bianca.

In this scene of the movie Coming to America Prince Akeem explains to his father why he is not feeling well. He wishes to do things himself, especially choose his own bride. But King Jeffe tries to assure him that the women he has already chosen is the perfect fit and that Akeem shouldn’t have to worry about a thing, after all he is a prince. At the breakfast table once King Jeffe sees that it is really about not choosing his own that bothers Akeem he shouts “Aha!” feeling successful to have “cracked the code”. He starts out by trying to guilt Akeem of how he and his mother have gone through a great deal of trouble to find his queen. Then he eases the tension by including that she was raised to do everything a queen would. When Akeem tries to dismantle what the king says by asking “What if I do not love her?” The king disregards the question and acts on it as if it was just the wedding jitters talking and replying that it is normal to be nervous about meeting her. Then Akeem’s mother joins in and supports the king’s response by telling her experience on meeting Akeem’s father and how nervous and terrified she was. The king ends off by saying “You see my son there is fine line between love and nausea.” and how doing things for oneself is an overrated experience. The camera shoots each person by themselves when they talk because each person has a different thought to say but when Akeem first comes and sits by his parents all of them are shown in one shoot and then it just goes to Akeem and his father. Also in this conversation the camera is mostly being viewed on the father which reflects on how Akeem’s father keeps his head up high. Which reflects that the king stands firm on each decision he makes and when it comes to his son he knows best. The only reason why the king want to pick Akeem’s bride for him is because he wants her to have all the characteristics and qualities that he thinks are more than acceptable to him. She has to be exactly what he wants for Akeem. 

As one can see, though the king and Baptista start with similar tactics of persuasion they end the conversation in contrasting topics. Baptista says to his servant“Nay, let them go, a couple of quiet ones.” (Act 3, Scene 2, Line 245) The situation that happened for this quote to be said by Baptista in the book was Katherine’s wedding day with Petruchio. Petruchio seemed to be a fine man who wanted Katherine’s heart until he decided to show up late, drunk, and  in rags to be married in. During the wedding, he threw the bible on the ground and punched the  priest. Soon after the wedding and the dinner he suddenly wanted to leave with Katherine as fast as possible. But Katherine and Baptista wanted to them both to stay least for a little while. But Petruchio was already set on leaving, so Katherine told him if he really loved her he would stay. His response was that was to tell his servant to get the horses ready. After this, Katherine refused to do anything with him, so he sweet talked her onto his side. They ended up leaving anyway and Baptista says that quote which means just let them be, they are a peaceful couple. Katherine’s happiness is the least of Baptista’s concerns. As long as she’s married and seems to be taking care that’s all that matters. Baptista witnessed the unstable things Petruchio did and still let Katherine go off with him and went about his life.

Later in the movie as soon as Cleo finds out that Akeem is a prince he completely and fully accepts the relationship between Akeem and his daughter and tries to take Lisa’s ex-boyfriend out of the picture. During this scene Akeem take’s Lisa home from their date and evidently Cleo tries to keep him over so he can inform Akeem’s father about his whereabouts. When seeing Akeem, Cleo greets him with a big smile (like never before), welcomes him into his home, offers and insist that he has a seat and drink, and says how they need to start talking to each other more. While Cleo slips to get the drink he actually goes into the kitchen to tell Akeem’s dad his address and that he’s here. Soon after the doorbell rings and Cleo answers. It’s Lisa’s ex-boyfriend Darryl with roses (before Cleo found out about Akeem’s throne he and Darryl planned to get Darryl and Lisa back together and it was set to tonight). Once Cleo opens the door and sees it Darryl he slams it on his face. When Cleo comes back to Lisa and Akeem, Lisa asks who was at the door and Cleo lies that it was jehovah witnesses. Darryl rings the doorbell again and Cleo runs to the door practically tripping over the rug, trying the avoid the suspicion on Lisa and Akeem’s face, answers the door and yells at Darryl “Look! The girl doesn’t like you anymore! Can’t you get that through your greasy head!” and slams the door before Darryl could finish his sentence. The third time Cleo has to open the door because Darryl knocked the door he says “I warned ya didn’t I?! Donny get him!”, his dog goes hurtling towards Darryl, biting and barking at him, and Cleo closes his door for the last time. Now that Cleo knows about Akeem’s riches he will stop at nothing to keep Lisa and Akeem together. He practically injured himself to do so. In this scene the camera is focused a lot on Cleo and his body language. His antsy movements in trying to make Akeem stay, the big smile on his face, sweet talk when Akeem’s around, the running to the door, and the vein on his head that pops up when he see’s Darryl at the door. By this one can analyze that not only does Cleo care about who has more money for his daughter and himself but he finds that it is up to him that no one stands in his way. 

Though Cleo and Baptista both want their daughters to be married it is for different reasons if which are on different scales of stakes. In the end of “Taming the Shrew” Katherine stays married to the wretched Petruchio, endures his treachery and Baptista questions nothing about their marriage. In the movie “Coming to America” all of the parents secretly discussed it out and allow Akeem and Lisa to wed one another. One can see that in both the play and the movie the parents are the ones who seem to make the all the decisions for their child and have the power to do as they please in whatever form or shape. But what separates and classifies the two is that in the movie the parents are more absorbed and have interest in the relationship of their kin than of the parent in the play. Society evolved and change the ideal parent from being carefree and have a couple rules to a more involved parent with more of a higher standards for their children. The book and The movie both reflect that parent involvement in their children's love life is more common today than any other time period.

The Deception of Love

Comparing "High School Musical 2" to "Taming of the Shrew"


In William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, prankster Lucentio falls in love with the daughter of Baptista. Although he is suppose to be studying at a near by college, he disguises himself as her school master to woo her. He also sends his loyal servant Tranio to bid for her heart. In the 2006 Disney trilogy High School Musical 2, wealthy, and popular Sharpay has a crush on the schools basketball MVP, but he is in love with his year long girlfriend Gabrielle. She then attempts to woo him with a full scholarship to The Unniversity of Albakerky, which he so desperately needs. And a summer job at her family owned country club.  

The tactics used by Lucientio are not vastly different from the modern ways of wooing. In Shakespearean times the only thing needed to wed two people would be a large dowry  authorized by the brides father. Which is similar to strategy used by Sharpay in High School Musical 2, Sharpay uses her fathers wealth and dignitary position to entice Troy.  However the difference between the two text is that the Shakespearean daughters who were offered a dowry were later married off by the father, without the daughters consent. Sharpay’s strategy could not possibly work because Troy has say so in his future. These text reflect that the wooer’s use of deception can not a assure a relationship between two people. However, if their is genuine attraction from both individuals and consent from the fathers, their relationship can flourish into honest love .

Vincentio, Lucentio’s father, returns to his home, to discover his son has swapped identities with the servant, Tranio. And an impostor, assigned by Lucentio, is dressed as him. There is a dispute between the impersonators and Vincentio, which then leads to an attempted arrest. newly weds Luncientio and Bianca arrive. Then Lucentio begs his father and Baptista for their marital consent.  

Baptista: But do you hear, sir, have you married my daughter without asking my goodwill? (ActV, Scene 2, pg. 204) 

Vincetio: Fear not Baptista, we will content you. Go to!(ActV, Scene 2, pg.205) 

In this dialogue Baptista is concerned about the secret marriage, but Vincientio assures him that everything will be ok, as a long as we give them our blessing. Although Lucentio and Bianca eloped, their father’s approval validated their love.

Troy finds himself in a similar predicament were he needs consent from his father. After Sharpay’s flashes a potential scholarship at Troy. He begins to think he is some what in love with Sharpay, but he can’t differentiate how he feels about Sharpay and how desperately he wants the scholarship. Like Baptista, Troy’s father is ok with Troy liking Sharpay because of the guaranteed scholarship. In this case Sharpay’s dowry is a full scholarship and Troy has his father’s consent to validate their relationship.  

Lucentio had made his way to the home of Baptista where his desired lover, Bianca, resides. Lucientio disguises himself as Bianca’s school teacher in order to get in to her home, and woo her. When he gets there he has a plan to tell her all the things he is feeling so that she will know his true intent for being her music tutor.

“Hic ibat, as I told you before, Simois, I am Lucentio, hic est, son unto Vincentio of Pisa, Sigeia tellus, disguised thus to get your love” 

(Act III, Scene 1, page 2)

Lucientio’s blunt way of communicating his emotions are similar to Sharpays frank advances towards Troy. Unlike High School musical Bianca is actually digging the confession from Lucientio. This straightforward confession is only working because Bianca likes the school master and allows him to continue revealing his plan disguised as a music lesson. 

Sharpay gets the brilliant idea to divulge her feeling for Troy through a song. She asks the hotel manager to bring him to this secret performance so that she can tell him how much she loves him. After she sings the song Troy doesn’t reciprocate the feeling leaving Sharpay feeling a bit defeated, but not too defeated because she made progress.

After her musical selection Sharpay ask Troy how he felt about the performance. He gives her a few pointers about how she could exclude the garish set and sing from the heart, alone. Sharpay replies “This could be our thing.” Then Troy fires back “ I have an our thing, it’s with Gabrielle.” Both Sharpay and Luncentio are essentially using the same tactics to express there love, but for these methods to be successful both parties involved must feel equally or greater about the each other.    

Although the dynamics of a relationship have evolved, the initial tactics to pursuing a relationship remain the same. When the ethical way of approaching someone isn’t a feasible, deception,and dowry will alway’s work. Especially with the father’s seal of approval. Money is commonly used as a wooing mechanism because it is easy to flaunt and can be received by everyone. A father’s seal of approval will always be necessary because of the patriarch role a father plays in his family. Although both High School Musical and the Taming of the Shrew reflect these tactics from different time periods, the common denominator remain the same. As long as the pursued party is attracted to the pursuer the relationship can with stand all odds.

Money, Love, Business

Comparing “Taming of the Shrew” to  “Can’t Buy Me Love”


 In the Taming of the Shrew, the play proves that marriage is a business transaction, so one may become more wealthy or become on a higher social class. In “Shrew” Petruchio is willing to marry Katherine for the money despite that no man will marry her because of her mean demeanor and hot temper. Katherine’s father Baptista negotiates in finding the right suitor, to get the best deal, for his personal gain. In the 1987 movie “Can’t Buy Me Love”, Ronald Miller uses his money to pay off the lead cheerleader so he may become popular.


  Petruchio and Baptista both compare to Ronald but in “Shrew” Petruchio and Baptista want to gain money by marriage and Ronald wants to gain a higher popularity level by spending his money. So there methods of getting what they want are different. In “Shrew” Petruchio’s struggle is dealing with Katherine. He tries to tame her so she may become a bearable wife. Baptista struggle is finding a suitor that will benefit his greedy needs, so finding Petruchio plans out perfectly for him. “Shrew” and “Can’t Buy Me Love” both use or is influenced by money. In contrast, both movie and book end differently as “Shrew” Katherine is just tamed  and the Love is not real since it was only for money. In the movie after Ronald’s experience of popularity he eventually gets the girl. This reflects that over time Love is more true and isn’t just a business transaction, but money shouldn’t be used to manipulate love, also it shouldn’t be the only reason someone is in a relationship.


"Then tell me," he asks Baptista, "if I get your daughter's love, What dowry shall I have with her to wife?"

  In this quote, Petruccio negotiates the terms of having Katherine with her father Baptista. This shows that he really isn’t interested in Katherine love, he’s worried about the “dowry” he may receive. Katherine’s repulsive vibes make Petruccio not want to Love but just to try to tame her.


In the movie,  Ronald Miller and Cindy Mancini negotiate the terms of their verbal contract to raise Ronald’s popularity status.

In this scene from “Can’t Buy Me Love”, Ronald Miller and Cindy Mancini quickly negotiate the terms of the verbal contract. Ronald wants to spend a lot of time with Cindy which he thinks will increase his chances in being popular. Cindy agrees to the contract but barely as she tries to get as many “free days” as possible, which brings the comedic standpoint to the movie. Unlike in “Shrew” the negotiations were made for the women Katherine, instead of the women being apart of the negotiations in the movie. In both movie and play, there is no true love because money is manipulating their relationships.


"Be patient, gentlemen; I choose her for myself:

If she and I be pleased, what's that to you?

'Tis bargain'd 'twixt us twain, being alone,

That she shall still be curst in company.

I tell you, 'tis incredible to believe

How much she loves me: O, the kindest Kate! "

 This quote from the book shows that Petruchio and Katherine have no real love because their whole relationship and marriage was a negotiation, so Petruchio could always have money, which Katherine would know nothing about. Petruchio tells his “plan” that he made secretly with Katherine which wasn’t true, saying she would put on a facade in public but when they were alone she would be submissive.


 In the movie, Ronald starts their relationship off in a bad way by offering Cindy money. Cindy was unsure at first but took it needing it desperately.

Ronald had to make an important decision at this point of the movie. Would he use his money for the telescope he’s been saving up for or spend this money on renting the head cheerleader so he may become popular his senior year of high school. As he approaches Cindy he knows she can’t resist his offer since she needs the money. He’s using his money to manipulate her at her time of need. It relates In “Shrew” because Petruchio has a great offer just as Ronald does in the movie to become more wealthy. This business transaction is the start of their relationship, that clearly manipulates Cindy’s mind because she agrees, to the offer.


 The fact that at the end of the movie Ronald and Cindy fall in love show that society still wants to see the happy endings in movies. At the end of “Shrew”, Baptista and Petruchio both filled accomplished because of their wealthier status but Petruchio didn’t find true love along the way. At the end of “ Can’t Buy Me Love” Ronald has a sense of awakening knowing he can’t use money to manipulate relationships and to become popular but he still finds true love, as he gets to ride off in the sunset on his lawnmower with the girl.

Getting The Girl 2011 v. 1590

Comparing “Crazy, Stupid, Love” & “The Taming of the Shrew”



The “Taming of the Shrew” by William Shakespeare is a comedy from 1590 that proves, men attempting to woo women is a centuries long practice. In “Shrew”, male suitors lined up in large quantities to attempt to woo the beautiful Bianca, with no limit on what they were willing to try to win her heart. The 2011 movie “Crazy, Stupid, Love” expresses the same practice of men doing what is necessary to woo women, and although the tactics that these men use are completely different than in “The Taming of the Shrew”, both proved that the main principle of honesty has been what women respond to the most for years.



Although the tactics that Lucentio and Hortensio use in “Taming of the Shrew” in order to try and win over Bianca are completely different than the tactics that Cal Weaver and Jacob Palmer deployed in order to win over women, the principle of honesty when attempting to woo these women remained there. Lucentio and Hortensio dress up in school teacher garments in order to get close to Bianca. Lucentio uses honesty hidden in his Latin lesson with Bianca, and Hortensio uses honesty hidden within a gamut. All that Cal and Jacob have to do is walk up to women and talk to them. These two situations show exactly how men and women have remained the same through centuries when it comes to what they respond to in the opposite sex. Both of these texts reflect that over years the tradition has been the same, multiple men walk up to attractive women and try to woo them in hopes of being with them. Although the measures in which these men take may have changed, the tradition and principal has remained the same.


“'Hic ibat' as I told you before- 'Simois' I am Lucentio-

'hic est' son unto Vincentio of Pisa- 'Sigeia tellus' disguised thus to get your love- 'Hic steterat' and that Lucentio thatcomes a-wooing- 'Priami' is my man Tranio- 'regia' bearing my port- 'celsa senis' that we might beguile the old pantaloon.”

(Lucentio, Act 3 Scene i, 33-38)



Within this quote, Lucentio is disguised as a schoolmaster and attempting to woo Bianca through pure honesty. He is forced to encode his message within his “lesson” due to the fact that Bianca’s other suitor, Hortensio, is also within the room during this time. He uses this honesty at his advantage, and she responds just as he hoped she would. This is also shown with Cal in “Crazy, Stupid, Love”.

In this earlier scene from “Crazy Stupid Love”, Cal is walking up to a women in a nightclub, and it is his first time attempting to talk to another female since his split with his wife. Jacob gave him a game plan when talking to women, but when that does not go well he immediately apologizes and is completely honest with the woman. “Im sorry! I’m in corporate insurance, I have children, plural. And my wife was cheating on me with David Lindhagen, which I wasn’t supposed to tell you about either. Nice to meet you.” “What were you supposed to tell me?” “I don’t know, I was supposed to say that you are the perfect combination of sexy and cute. Which is actually something that I used to say to my wife, but now it’s become corrupted. And I have 8 layers of clothes on. I’m wearing a shirt, and a tie, and a sweater, and a suede jacket that just seals in all the heat. Seals in all the juices. It’s just all sweat under here, this is all sweat from here down. And this sweater, it’s called slim cut, but it feels like a scuba suit. And I’m looking at your breasts, what is that about?” “You think I’m the perfect combination of sexy and cute?” Just like Lucentio, Cal is completely honest about everything that’s going on. He reveals the facade that he is portraying, and tells her exactly who he really is just like Lucentio. The comedy within this movie surrounds this, and proves to the audience the overall power of honesty when attempting to woo a woman.

"A re" to plead Hortensio's passion-

"B mi" Bianca, take him for thy lord-

"C fa ut" that loves with all affection-

"D sol re" one clef, two notes have I-

"E la mi" show pity or I die.

During this quote, Hortensio is dressed up as Bianca’s musical teacher and uses the gambit, in which he is attempting to teach her, to reveal who he really is and his love for her. The problem within this situation is, Bianca does not like the gamut due to the fact that she is used to what she already knew and she does not like change. Their is also an added element of the fact that Bianca has another honest suitor that’s willing to do anything necessary to be with her. This is one situation in which honesty did not end as well as it could due to other factors. This also occurred within “Crazy, Stupid, Love” with Jacob.

In this very early scene in “Crazy, Stupid, Love”, Jacob walks up to a woman named Hannah along with her friend in a nightclub and attempts to woo her. Although he uses complete honesty this is does not work due to the fact that Hannah is not single and does not like his straightforwardness. “That’s weird because I think your friend Hannah is really sexy.” “Oh my god! You did not just say that. How old are you?!..... Don’t you think you’re a little too old to be using cheesy pick up lines?”...... “Wow Hannah, you’re really wearing that dress like you’re doing it a favor!-- That’s a line. Me sitting over there for the past two hours not being able to take my eyes off you is a fact. I mean there’s lots of beautiful women in this bar, your friend included, Hi”, “I love you.” “But I can’t take my eyes off you. That’s a fact it’s not a line.... Ok Hannah, can I buy you a drink?” “It’s time to go home.” In the same way that Hortensio attempted to “get” the women that he was interested in using honesty, Jacob did the same and they both did so to no avail due to different factors. This proves to the audience of these two medias that although honesty does often help when it comes to attempting to woo a person, it is unrealistic to believe that just because you’re honest that person will automatically fall in love with you over any other suitors or people that may want them.



Due to the fact that at the end of both “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and “The Taming of the Shrew”, honesty won over the women that the men wanted, it just reflects a society that wants to see a happy ending with couples that started from honest, romantic love. At the end of “Crazy, Stupid, Love” Jacob ends up with the women that he truly wanted, and in “The Taming of the Shrew”, Lucentio ends up with Bianca, but Hortensio ends up alone only because of the fact that only one character could have Bianca. Although Cal didn’t necessarily get his wife back like he wanted at the end of the movie, the way in which the movie ended with the screen panning out to Cal and his wife watching their son, who had just graduated, in admiration allows the audience to foreshadow that they will get back together.
