Reflection

The thing I found most challenging was finding the link to support what I had written in my two paragraphs. Most of my paragraphs were opinionated or based on knowledge I already knew, so finding the correct source I felt was hard because it was not needed. For some of my topics the challenging part was even writing  two paragraphs. The steps to collecting and selecting my images started with picking my topics. I first picked the 10 topics I knew would be easy to describe and most convenient for my to take pictures of. Then I picked the pictures that best fit and took distance into consideration, I tried to keep the pictures not necessarily just in my neighborhood but places that I spend time at. My favorite image is the picture of the recycling and trash bins on South St. This is my favorite picture because going green is at this point one of the most important things happening globally, and to see it in Philadelphia means that progress is happening. I also like the fact that you can tell these are located on major tour city in Philadelphia because they are artistic.  Globalization in Philadelphia is evident however when being compared to larger cities they have much more evidence with certain categories.  With Philadelphia you have to look much deeper to understand what true globalization is within the certain things we see. However cities everywhere are influenced global by culture and religion. These are topics that help shape the cities we live in today.

Collapsibility Benchmark

Posted by Caroline Abdulbaki in Globalization - Laufenberg on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 10:08 am
Lebanon vs. Philippines presentation

Reflection:
The two countries that I decided to focus my benchmark on were Lebanon located in the Middle East and the Philippines located in Southeast Asia. Lebanon is a small country bordered by Syria and Israel. It has a lot of tourism which helps bring most of the money in especially in the capital city Beirut. The Philippines is a country created from groups of 7,107 islands.

The process it took for me to find information about these two countries required a lot of focusing and reading. I needed to receive a lot of my information for both of my countries in order to go in-depth about their situations based on the 5 point framework. Once the information was found I needed to read a lot in order to understand the information and make sure it is enough for me to prove why each country received the rating I gave it. It was also frustrating at times when I thought my writing was either not enough or it was too much because the information for one country was more abundant than the information for another country.

The 5 point framework was not as difficult as I thought it would be, however it was not straight forward. Some websites such as the CIA WorldFact book gave you the environmental issues, climate change, and everything basically needed of my country. However to back it up I needed to do outside research and some of the frameworks the information was not available or abundant. I think the most difficult framework finding information for was hostile neighbors for the Philippines and Society's response to environmental damage for Lebanon.

If I could change one thing about my project I would change the way I presented it. I felt the powerpoint was powerful in presentation but could've made the project more eye-catching with pictures and different ways of presenting information. I would also attempt to back up responses a bit more for certain topics of the framework.

Joan Mir ; Carnival of Harlequin Print

American Government Q2 Bm

Posted by Caroline Abdulbaki in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 9:19 am
Benchmark link to google doc.

Reflection:
My America Government Q2 benchmark was finding 12 laws, cases, and offices 2 negative and 2 positive for each branch of our government, and find out how they affect me. When choosing the 12 laws, cases, and offices that were included in my benchmark the first thing I thought of was me. I thought about the things I do in my everyday life as a teenager and how the government wraps into that. The activities I perform, my education, safety, the rules I follow etc. I researched my laws, cases, and offices that revolved around those specific words and found the ones that automatically connected to me and placed them into my project.
This process had its difficult and easy times. The easiest parts for me were analyzing how each law, case and office affect me personally and why. It was also finding either the  law, case, or office that I thought would portray this type of affect perfectly after fully understanding what the law was saying. That ties in to what I thought was difficult, the three most difficult things about this process were understanding some of the laws, finding the exact name, and locating laws/ offices with the Executive branch. Some of my laws for example the Keeping the Internet Devoid of Sexual Predators Act of 2008, I need to reread a few times in order to fully grasp the concept. I did understand the main task this law was trying to accomplish but some details and procedures were included that I did not fully understand. I also found it hard to find laws and offices that related to the Executive branch, because many bureaucratic functions effect me later into the future.

I found my life to be more affected by the government as I grow older. There comes a lot more procedures that I have to go through in order to obtain the things I want or need in life and almost all of them have a connection to the government. The government is related to many aspects of my life, and what I go through as an adult is held onto their decisions. The laws they make, the cases that win or lose, the offices and their heads all decide the major aspects of what happens in my life when becoming an adult. Though they do not control my curfew, or the things I watch on television, they deal with my education, future jobs, and others.
I enjoyed working on this project, not only because I learned how the government affects me, but also new laws, cases, and offices that set up the way I, we are all affected by our government. The people that decide many of the things that happen to the way its country is run. I learned information that I plan to continue learning and remembering.

Lobbying Assignment Blog #5

Posted by Caroline Abdulbaki in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 7:13 am

This is my letter to Senator Scott Brown (R-MA). He is against the DREAM Act because he feels as if it is a "backdoor amnesty." With my letter I am hoping to convince him to vote for the DREAM Act. Though many students and people have tried to convince him and fail, giving up is not an option.

Dear Senator Brown,
My name is Caroline AbdulBaki and I am a senior at Science Leadership Academy.  This year, applying to colleges is an incredibly huge part of my life and filing for financial aid. While fighting to accomplish this overwhelming process,  I tend to ask my friends to see the kinds of steps they are taking. All or most of them would say their process is complicated, easy, and or done, but not all of them mean it. Some of my friends would not be applying to colleges or for financial aid because they are illegal immigrants. They know that financial aid will not be given at any cost, and in some situations, they are declined from going to any college.
The DREAM Act gives these hard working students an opportunity to be leveled as an incredible student. These students that you are now depriving from college have been attending your school districts since Pre-school. They should not be punished for a mistake their parents committed and the child takes all the sufferings. . These children may not be American on paper, but they are at heart. I understand the pros and cons of the DREAM Act, however “the children are our future” should be a huge reason why you should vote for the DREAM Act. These children work hard to receive an education and achieve in life in order to help make OUR country a better place to live. It is important for those who help represent the country their entire lives to be given a chance.  They work hard to accomplish DREAMS they have had for a long time but not to be crushed by a system that limits their education. If you are not a favor of the wordingm try to change it, make it reasonable but I ask you to not take this opportunity away from these earning children.
Take a minute and put yourself in their shoes. Put your children in their shoes imagine if they were to suffer from a mistake that you had made in your past. It is a frustrating proccess that any parent or child would be willing to fight.  We want to legalizing immigrants and why not help those who deserve it. Take a second Mr. Brown and truly think about these children by helping to make the right choice for these children.

Sincerely,
Caroline AbdulBaki

Bureaucracy Project

Posted by Caroline Abdulbaki in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, December 17, 2010 at 8:24 am

DivorceFlowChart

In American Government we were asked to choose a bureaucratic task and go through the process of completing it, and the task that I chose to complete was divorce.

Divorce is a process that needs patience in order to be completed properly and without many complications. My partner and I had a few disagreements here and there about certain topics but other than that it went smoothly and we were able to "final our divorce." The complications that usually revolve around divorce are if children/child are involved, the different types, and amount of paper work needed to fill out. You also need to hire a notary, have a non-lawyer and a judge which if you do not have are roadblocks in the process.  The language of the paperwork is also confusing because the way certain sentences are phrased, if you are able to understand it, then everything is basically straightforward.

If I were able to change anything about the divorce process it would be the amount of paper work involved. I felt as if a lot of the paper work was repeated throughout the different packets that were required to fill out.

The systems may have become much more complicated because in a larger country that circumstances have changed, resulting in unnecessary paper work.

#4 Communication

Recent News: The DREAM Act has recently passed the House but was put to on hold until possibly next week or maybe longer in the Senate because the fear of a filibuster held by GOP.

To help lobby for my legislation I am going to write a personalized letter to GOP explaining why the DREAM Act is important and why they should vote. GOP is the Republican National Committee with the chairman being Michael Steele. A personalized letter will truly show him how important the DREAM Act is from a student's perspective.

Along with my personalized letter I would hope to get some of my friends involved with this topic as well and for them to write letters to GOP in order to persuade them more because many students are writing about a topic in a way related to them. Hopefully the letters will be mailed out before the next week. If I can’t get the letters mailed out my alternative would be phone call explaining instead.

I also plan to keep updated with the Senators who are not going to vote using the DREAM Act twitter. I will try get in contact with them, whether I am able to meet with some of them in person or send them letters. It might be a little bit difficult to convince most of their minds at this point in time but it never hurts to try!

Resea de "Mar Adentro"

Posted by Caroline Abdulbaki in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Monday, November 29, 2010 at 7:43 pm

DREAM Act Blog #3 Caroline AbdulBaki

Posted by Caroline Abdulbaki in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at 6:55 am

   Harry-Reid2Harry Reid

The DREAM Act has been an incredibly huge topic discussed through the news for the past 3 years but has recently risen to its strongest and yet weakest year. Many people are starting to become aware of the DREAM Act because it helps many students to receive a higher education and also due to the fact that many students are getting involved with helping to get this legislation passed in order to become law!

This has been a good and bad year for this legislation, though many universities and people are supporting this legislation, it was shut down in the Senate on September 21, 2010. The bill was attached to a defense bill making it harder for Republicans to shut it, but a filibuster held by the Republicans senators and one Democrat shut it down. When reintroduced in March 26, 2009 it had 134 official cosponsors but after the filibuster in September it was left with 2 cosponsors, we need to convince the Republicans and Democrats in the Senate and House that this legislation is extremely important. dream-act-now-1

Many universities that have supported the DREAM Act such as University of Pennsylvania, UC Berkley, University of Florida, Harvard University and many others. Universities help give this legislation good media and image because these are some of the top Universities that support a cause which helps students who they know deserve the right to learn the same as everyone else. Supporting the DREAM Act shows that they care about and spend an extreme amount of time with these children.

Public supports that give this bad media attention are groups who want to stop immigration and enforce security on our borders such as the ALIPAC group and Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). These groups do not support legislation similar to the DREAM Act or any legislation that help immigrations because they believe that illegal immigrants are law breakers and that the law should be followed and they should be punished.

Republicans are the major opponents of this legislation they have as much power as the people who support this bill which are the Democrats. Republicans. Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) said that they would cosponsor the bill as well as Sen. Robert Bennett (R-Utah), hinting that he is most likely going to vote for the DREAM Act when it is presented as a standalone bill. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) Florida GOP Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. Diaz-Balart, all said that they would vote for the DREAM Act during its presentation during the lame duck session.

All of the Democrats are essential to the outcome of the bill because if they are all on board with the act they will be then be able to convince the Republicans to get on board as well. Democrats have to support a bill started by their own and so do the Republicans in order for them to succeed.  If Republicans such as John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) won’t vote for the bill we need as many Democrats as possible.

Groups that are good to communicate with in order to help us are lobbyist groups such as Peaceful Tomorrows who have already lobbied for the DREAM Act the day it was not passed in the Senate.Contacting many students from different universities who are lobbying for it is another great way to get out that this bill becoming a law is very important.

The two people I interviewed answered no because they don't know why we vote on Tuesday and saw the highest amount of ads on television.
