Advanced Essay #1: The Betrayer

Posted by Doniesha Hinson in English 3 · Block · E Band on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at 7:02 am
Introduction:
Growing up I was betrayed a lot by family, friend and sometimes, even strangers. So in this essay, I decided to share a couple of experiences and my reflection on how those betrayals shaped me. My goal was to explain how being betrayed can sometimes make you more cautious on how much trust you give a person.

Advanced Essay:

“Where is she?” a strange voice questioned.

My heart clogged my lungs as I let out an unpleasant scream. They were taking her away from me, again.

I lived with my mom, dad, and little sister at the time. Life wasn’t going so great for me. I had good grades, all the toys I could ever want and of course, both of my parents living with me, but, they weren’t really there. My dad worked as a truck driver, so he had crazy, unpredictable work hours. My mom used to be a nurse, that is until she found a new hobby, a new friend, PCP. PCP became her new life, she got high no matter what time of day or night. The drug caused her to hallucinate frequently, wandering off into different galaxies. She would not usually get high in front of my sister and me, but when she did, my world would shatter into a billion pieces, as I watched her spineless body fall to the ground.

“You can’t blame her for becoming addicted, Doniesha” my dad always reminded me.

But I can blame her. I can blame her for betraying regularly. She would always express to me how bad she felt for disappointed me so many times. She told that I could trust her, that she wouldn’t hurt me anymore.

It felt very weird, yet, liberating in the beginning. My perception of trust for her went from subjective and attached to objective and detached. I received a lot of realizations after the many betrayals and I moved on more confident and stronger.

Over the weeks, she began getting slimmer and her neutral facial expression became very bland. She got into many car accidents and physical altercations while under the influence of this evil, corrupting drug. This caused her to become a frequent inmate, both in the county jail system and in her very own psychological prison. The worst part about the entire situation was that she betrayed me. My mother was supposed to be someone that I could look up to. I no longer had that uniform female in my life to talk to me about love and menstruation.

Being raised in an environment where my female role model, modeled nothing but bright orange jumpsuits and my father’s broken heart caused him to entirely box himself out from the real world, I began to become depressed. So to cope with my depression, I began to write all the time. Somehow, I managed to build a new life and start fresh, at least, that's what I thought.

One Saturday morning changed everything. I recall having the best dream of my life. That all was ruined when I was rudely awakened by a loud thudding sound coming from the front door. As I querulously crept downstairs to investigate, I heard an unfamiliar voice at the door. Whoever the mysterious voice was, it was asking for the whereabouts of my mother. My dad let out an angry sigh and opened the door completely to let this stranger inside of our safe home. When the man stepped through the door, I heard a raspy dispatcher’s voice on a small walky-talky and I realized that the stranger, in fact, was a police officer looking for my mother. I sat on the last step of the staircase and began to cry. I knew he was here to take her back to jail. It wasn’t anything new.

“Abbigail?” the officer projected “Where are you?”

My mother walked down the stairs with a large chef’s knife in her hand.

“Drop the weapon Abigail!” the officer demanded.

“They told me to come with them, it’s better in the underworld” my mom stated tediously.

I hopped up from the step and gazed at her black, soulless eyes with trepidation. I will never forget the sound of that stainless-steel hitting the steps, tip first. The officer handcuffed her, took her to his car and drove off. I still remember sobbing louder than the sirens as I heard them fade off into the distance. My dad slid his sore slender back against the wall and sighed again. But this time it was a good sigh. A sigh of relief.

I view the idea of betrayal as a learning experience, it has a positive connotation. I speak for myself when I say that being betrayed makes you more vigilant in how you manage relationships that you encounter. You no longer trust the betrayer the same you're always skeptical and on edge when you are dealing with the betrayer. I soon had to realize that trust wasn't supposed to be given but it needed to be earn. Even for the people who promised that would never betray you.

When I was in 8th grade, I had to take part in court-mandated therapy sessions.

"Go and share your thoughts, and maybe it will help you feel better" the judge expressed.

So I went and at first, I really enjoyed it. The therapist would get me to express my feelings by playing board games and coloring. I started to open up more, I started to trust her. That's when things changed. When I walked into her office on Thursday evening, there were no board games, there were no coloring books, but instead there sat my therapist behind a rusty brown desk. She instructed me to come in and sit down.

"W-where are the games?" I questioned bafflingly.

"There are no games today sweetheart, we need to talk."

She told me that everything that I told her was confidential, but at that age, I didn't understand what that word meant.

"What does that mean?" I asked.

"It means that I can't tell the judge, mommy or daddy what you tell me tonight, it's a secret, just between you and I."

I didn't really have any reason to not trust that she wasn't telling me the truth not to confide in her, so I began to talk. I talked and talked for an hour straight, expressing all of my thoughts and feelings without holding back. I began by telling her about this boy that I had a crush onto this very day,  and later on, I went into more serious topics.

"And sometimes my mommy hits me," I stated as I took a big gulp trying to hold back the vicious tears ready to stream down my cheeks.

After I said that the therapist stood up and gave me a big hug and told me that I did a wonderful job tonight.

The next morning, I get called into the office at school and there are two women standing there waiting for me. They restated word for word everything that I said to my therapist. I felt a big rush of dizziness as the upsetness took over my stomach.

"How could she tell them?" I thought to myself.

I trusted her and even though I didn't understand the severity of the things that I told her the night before, the simple fact was that she betrayed me.

As I grew older these betrayals changed my trustworthiness of others. I learned that trust is valuable. It affects everything. So to this very day, it is very hard for me to trust people, simply because I have been betrayed. Breaking someone's trust is like crumpling up a piece of perfect piece of paper. You can smooth it over but it's never going to be the same again.

                   Film Review: Gender Bias Lens
Sometimes, it is not as easy to find a movie where a female’s role is greatly represented. So to address that disputed point, both the Bechdel test and the Mako Mori test were created to serve as a guide for finding quality female portrayal in films. However, the test are not an indicators of feminist movies but rather the role of the women in the film that you are watching.
To begin, the Bechdel test is to test for the presence of females in a film. The test is named after Alison Bechdel who created the comic strip, Dykes to Watch Out For. In the comic strip, two women talk about seeing a film and one of the women explains that she would only see a film if it meet the criteria. In order for the women to see a film it must include two women, who have at least one conversation about something other than a man. The two women searched and realized that there was not a film that met this criteria. Alison put her comic and in a feminist newspaper and it has caught millions of people’s attention since then.
Shortly after the Bechdel test, in 2013, the Mako Mori test was created. The creator of the test, Chaila, believed that in certain scenarios the Bechdel test was inadequate for calculating the representation of women in a film. The test was named after character, Mako Mori, in the film Pacific Rim. Similarly, it is a test to find the existence of female eminence in a film. In contemplation of passing the Mako Mori test, a film must meet the following requirements: The film must have at least one female character who has her own narrative arc, which does not exist to support the narrative arc of a male character.
An great example of both test is the new film, Hidden Figures. In this film, three intelligent African American woman, Katherine, Dorothy and Mary, work as the brains behind the one of the tremendous operations in NASA history: the launch of John Glen. This operation was a remarkable achievement because it turned around the Space Race, brought back confidence within the nation and startled the world. This film meets the criteria of both tests because the three main characters are women, who discuss many plans and mathematical calculations with one another and their narrative arc does not support John Glen, moreso the other way around.
If I were to create a test similar to the Bechdel and Mako Mori test, I would want my test to have the criteria of having at least one LGBT+ couple or an interracial couple that have their own narrative arc and serve a positive role in the film. This would be my specific criteria because I believe that although interracial and LGBT+ couples are widely supported by many around the world, the idea has not yet made it to the big screens. Nevertheless, when these couples are found in a film, they usually have a negative role or are portrayed negatively. I believe that this would be a great step in showing the great understanding and support of interracial couples and LGBT+ couples around the world. An example movie that meets the criteria for my test is the film, Loving. In this film, a black woman and a white man are the plantiffs in the Supreme court decision Loving v. Virginia.

Doniesha:

Un Alma Partido

Soy hija de las Américas

Y como si fuera poco

Soy hija de una encrucijada

No tengo adónde correr

No tengo donde esconder

Veo la línea del horizonte

Pero no puedo tocarla

Saboreo las lágrimas saladas de mi dolor

Toco las montañas rocosas del éxito

Pero es demasiado alta

Oigo fuerza

Vivo en la ciudad del amor fraternal

Pero eso es falso

Vivo con un corazón roto

Nunca olvido los recuerdos

Que partido mi alma

Corro de todos

Porque me dicen mentiras

Bailo con la canción de mi verdad

Porque es todo lo que tengo

Somos productos de los perdidos

Estamos cansados de correr

Hablamos esperanza:

La lengua de verdad y creencia

Vivimos en América pero

Nuestras mentes siempre se preguntan

Nuestros corazones descalzos se perdieron

Y no hay camino de regreso

The Great Macbeth- Doniesha Hinson & Sydney Rogers

Posted by Doniesha Hinson in English 1 - Giknis - X on Monday, January 18, 2016 at 1:12 pm

Sydney and I chose to create a game board as a way to reflect our knowledge on the Macbeth play because we thought it would be both interesting and informative. The game is a mixture of a trivia game and a common Candy Land style game board. We decided to make the game this way because we figured it would be more interactive than a simple, long and boring old-fashioned game. We thought this would also be a good way to get people thinking outside of the box.

One way we proved our understanding of the play was by using trivia and prophecy cards to embrace the usage of the paradoxes, the prophecies and the tragedies that occurred throughout the play. The two main characters frequently used throughout the game were Macbeth and Banquo. We chose to use those to characters in specific because they were, in our opinion, the two protagonists of the play.

Some of the “prophecy cards” featured include the paradoxes Banquo received from the three weird sisters. We incorporated these specific paradoxes because in the game you can either move forward or backwards. Either way you moved you were always closer yet farther away. In addition we included events that Macbeth came across all through the play. Such as when he became King or when he killed Duncan. We involved events like these because they were the most significant in the changing of characterization we saw in Macbeth.

Another way we demonstrated our knowledge was by making a “metaphoric” board. The board is colored red to create the bloody atmosphere portrayed in the play. Further, the board has 8 spaces titled “Banquo”. This represents the last apparition Macbeth saw — Banquo’s line of infinite Kings. Moreover, we included 3 “Macbeth” spots that represent the repetition of 3’s. There were 3 main witches, 3 prophecies, 3 apparitions and the repeatings of idiocy. Idiocy is the act of really stupid behavior. Macbeth killed Duncan — which in our opinion was insane — this drove him to begin hallucinating weird things. (ex. II.2.44-46 “Still it cried, ‘Sleep no more!’ to all the house; ‘Glamis hath murdered sleep, and therefore Cawdor shall sleep no more, Macbeth shall sleep no more.’”) This quote is also foreshadowing the ending of the play where Macbeth is murdered.

Last but not least, we created a dungeon space. It is similar to the Monopoly’s “JAIL” section and plays a similar role. We included this space on this game board because it refers back to “The Stanford Experiment”. As time went on Lady Macbeth turned Macbeth from good to evil. He was influenced once and took the power to his head, which left Lady Macbeth uncontrollable of his actions. Additionally, Lady Macbeth created a mental prison for herself. She held on to dark secrets and information which made her start to act jittery and insane.

Overall, we generally determined that this would be the most efficient way to show our creative skills and comprehension of the wonderful yet dreadful “Macbeth” play.

In this show, you will see that Blanca really likes Pablo and gets distracted by his handsomeness. She likes him so much that she can even speak clearly when he is around. However, Pablo does not like Blanca but he likes her best friend, Liliana. What a change in events! In the end, everyone is friends-- or are they? Tune in next week for the next episode of: Él Triángulo De Amor!!

U2 #8 Reflection Media

In class we watched Frontline's Digital Nation. The show was about a couple of teenagers who viewed online as a their own digital reality. They were able to really be themselves on the internet without any real physical judgement. The most memorable thing that stood out to me was the ending part when "Autumn's" parents begin to accept her for who she is and who she really wants to be. It is very important to watch shows lie these because it is REALITY! It gives you a feel of people's everyday life. It makes you feel for them and basically just lets you know that there are people out there who are struggling with these types of problems. My future family will remain safe online by following rules and regulations that I set for them. (ie. Tell an adult if there is anything that makes you feel uncomfortable) Also, I will be really strict with enforcing those rules. I believe it is important to talk about internet safety with your family even though people don't do it. It is important because at the end of the day you want to keep your family safe and at well-being. Make sure you check in on your child's online activity even if you have to do it on a sneak.

Stay Active, Be Healthy

Stay Active, Be Healthy (1)
I learned from my peers that my wording wasn't aligned properly. I also learned that I should not include images of food since my phrase includes the words "Stay Active", which have nothing to do with eating or food in general. The last thing I learned from my peers was making the background more dull to have brightly colored pictures.

I made the changes to my slide because I wanted to demonstrate how I can learn quickly and readjust the things that aren't that well thought of. I also wanted to show my peers that I take in to consideration the suggestions that they had up to offer. Lastly, I wanted to show how I am capable of exceeding expectations on this slide overall.

Stay Active, Be Healthy
I chose to make the background of my sin this color because color is the first thing people noticed about slides. The eye-popping color makes them want to read what is on the slide.

I chose to make the text big because large lettering and short wording is easily read, memorized and remembered.

Last but not least, I chose to “Stay Active, Be Healthy” because I am a person who likes to play sports and eat (most of the time) healthy.

Reflection- Hinson

Posted by Doniesha Hinson in Technology - Freshman - Hull - b1 on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at 12:45 pm
Today in class, we viewed a short interactive clip about a boy, Jack, who was being bullied by peers, both verbally and through the internet. We were able to stop the bullies in advanced by clicking the eye-looking button. This button was there to let the bullies know someone was watching them. After watching this video, lots of things ran through my mind. I really hate the fact that people are bullied and I never noticed how bad it can affect a person being bullied. Online I appear the same as I would in person. When I searched myself I didn't really find anything bad. I believe people think I am a nice and well conducted person. The internet trolls is to make you upset and very mad. A positive result of online anonymity are used to send positive messages. A negative anonymity is used to send hurtful and mean spam messages.

Home Network, Hinson

Blank Flowchart
My ISP is Verizon Fios. I have both a modem and a router. Connected to my router I have wireless wifi. Connected to my wifi I have a printer, 4 iPhones, 3 iPads, a PS4, a xBox 1 and an apple desktop. These are the things that make up my home network. One "OMG" moment I had was learning that there were firewalls inside of firewalls. For example, if you were a hacker and the thing you are trying to hack has multiple firewalls, it will be way harder to hack into the thing or site. If you are to have a ISP make sure you pick a ISP that has good quality for a good price.
