Jorge Dasilva’s capstone

Posted by Jorge Dasilva on Saturday, May 30, 2020 at 3:34 pm

Capstone process paper
Jorge Dasilva Everyone remembers something. It could be from 50 years ago or from just a week ago. We all have good memories and the ones we don’t want to dig up. These are some of mine.

I grew up living in a dorm that is part of a college campus, the University of Pennsylvania. We’d call it “the quad.” There were college kids around. Some were our baby-sitters and some would wave at us. Most of these memories are scarce and not very detailed. When I look back in time I mostly see general colors and shapes of buildings. I do have one very vivid scene: I see an open field with a tent. At the same time, I’m inside the tent looking at a picture book about crabs. It’s a white crab holding a fish in one claw and on the back of the crab’s shell are tiny red dots and then that’s it.

At the very beginning of this process, my idea was of organizing a photo exhibit at the Green Line café. I took about 50 photos in three weeks, and I also used photos that I took beforehand. I looked over them in my free time, and I made slight edits to them. Most of my edits were because I’d rather have them be as raw as possible, as a stylistic choice. I’ve cut them down to 25 photos, to pick the 15 I have as the end result and for the final project.

I went through the process of selecting the final group of photos with my mentor Lori Waselchuk, who is a professional photographer. Together we looked over the 25 photos to choose what works and what doesn’t work, Choosing each by what photo really means and looking deeper into each photo by looking at emotion, meant also looking at colors: How the colors work, how the shading works, and how it looks in a total of how everything in the photo works together.

I worked at the Green life Café as a dishwasher, and I thought it would be a great place to host a photo exhibit, it’s easy to get to and very accessible by trolley, and it’s a nice space that already had the art of other artists up on the walls. So I had a plan to ask my boss for the permission with hosting it there, after my shift. The photos would have been 15 x 36” each, in simple black frames, either made of wood or metal depending on what’s available. I wanted them hung on the walls where viewers can walk around socializing while looking at the photos.

But now all social events and gatherings are canceled and we are having a virtual presentation“ and I will have each photo on each Google slide that I will talk about, according to each memory I have of that certain place or thing.

I thought this was going to be a foolproof plan but ith the Covid-19 pandemic cancellations. My plan for the capstone idea was to host a photo exhibit with 15 or fewer photos that will be hanging up in the green cafe on May 20th. But now the pandemic made sure that no one can leave the house, no social events, I thought of an alternative solution to so I’ll still be able to have my capstone project. The new plan is to have a google slide presentation to show my photos and have assigned writing according to the photo. This was the biggest challenge for my capstone. Overcoming this hurdle was seamless with creating a google slide with the photos that I’ve chosen. The biggest help that I received in creating this capstone was through being a part of the Teen photo program at the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center (PPAC). In this program, we learn about other professionals and about the history of photography. This is the place that I was planning to use for printing out each photo and framing them.PPAC is a program where a gathering a couple of students who are all interested in photography add in high school and practice and learn more about photography

With slight setbacks, I believe I am most proud of is that I had a backup plan to follow the rules of social distancing and another thing that I am very very proud about is how much improvement my photos have shown throughout the years since when I picked up a camera, which was at least five years ago. I impressed myself with my art and that is the best feeling. I am also very proud that I was accepted at a university with these photos as part of my portfolio, which is really great. I had the idea of having my photo exhibit for a while now, and I am not very happy that I could not finish it. But everything happens for a reason I guess,

Advanced essay#3 On camera

Posted by Jorge Dasilva in English 3 · Block/Harmon · Y Band on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at 11:10 pm

I want to focus on the use of photography and the laws to use cameras for war. Also, I'm interested in how nations used photography and cameras as a weapon. There is a law that we documenting you can not crop, modify or enhance the photo in any way because this act is a modification to what is happening. The idea for police officers to start wearing body cameras. Some people and police officers were against the idea; it shows there is no trust in our authority. When there is no trust in the protection that people need to be safe. There are 3 different ways A camera can be used as; Protection, regulation, and as a weapon.

We see security cameras all the time, Do you know that some of the cameras on the street, in buildings and Nations around the world, use these cameras in a way to protect themselves for example in Russia there is a law where because of the massive size of 6.602 million mi²  and the relaxed country made it hard for enforcing road safety and laws. There's a population of people that try to fake getting hit by cars to risk their lives to get money from the insurance;  the protection from fraud.

In China under the rule of Xi Jinping Has created a new market for security cameras and putting them on the street. The increased amount of the vastly stretched cameras around the nation; lower prices have made it more accessible for stores and residents to use for their own use as protection. The police watch footage from the 4,300 cameras around the nation. This line of work employs more than 3,000 employees in Ecuador, started in early 2011 the idea to bring Chinese footage across the Atlantic to Ecuador where the police “Manually” overwatch the Chinese population.  With great power comes great responsibility, there are some nations that do abuse this as certain censorship called “public opinion guidance” with the misuse of Chinese made a controversial system that started to profile Muslim individuals, the program detected the detected these minorities using facial recognition this isn't the ones in your iphone jib jabs.

What to take away from this small dive into the use of cameras. Theres is also the other uses the cameras in so many more ways that I cant even write because of the word count but  in short there is a good a way and a bad or every way. You might find it creepy or strange. In Chinas case there is a definite sense of invasion of privacy.

Advanced essay #1(The movies)

Posted by Jorge Dasilva in English 3 · Block/Harmon · Y Band on Sunday, September 16, 2018 at 9:59 pm

The were many movies out that I wanted to see, but they were all rated R and being me, a mere sixteen year old I could only fantasize. I looked around on all the movie theater websites like the RAVE, the AMC and of course google itself for a movie that wasn't rated R. Then I found it; Happy Death Day. I was a bit hesitant because I really enjoy a good scare when I go to a horror movie, and the best scares  were the movies rated R, so I assumed that the scare was not going to be as well done compared to the movie Saw (2004).

On October 19th I asked around snapchat if any of my friends wanted to see a movie. I asked them, “Hey do you wanna go out and see Happy Death Day the movie with me?” I wanted to see it really badly because all of the other horror movies that I wanted to see were all R rated.  I was only 16 at the time so I would had needed an adult I didn't want to sit down with one of my parents through a horror movie that they would hate it. It might've been awkward. I asked the new girl in our grade, Maddy I added her on Snapchat when we first meton the first day of Sophomore year. My friend lou introduced us in the cafe of the school

“Hey this is Maddy” she said

“Are you two sisters or something?” I asked

“No!” they both said

I asked her if she wanted to go and she said “Yeah sure I’ll go”. Around 9:00 pm we go to go the Rave at 40th and Walnut. We got there and it was actually my first time in a movie theater at night with no adults. The theater had as usual, there's the classic 90s carpeting pattern, the red background and the little black triangles and yellow squiggly lines that looked like mustard on the floor.

The Movie was about a girl in college that had one day of her life repeat over and over.

At first she is confused about this strange phenomenon. She wakes up everyday in another bed after a late night of partying, a friend of the strangers and says something disrespectful about her being there. It is her birthday she walk outside and notices little different thing like a group of people having a picnic then the sprinkler turns on and they get all wet, the next thing she notices is a guy that passes out from some kind of frat hazing this happens many times. She gets used to these recurrences and she does something each time this happens. Ten thing start to get weird  a masked killer suddenly takes her life in a brutal attack again she wakes up without a scratch. She uses this phenomenon to get who the masked killer is.

The movie was fine but I don't recommend it, I was very confused but I still figured out who the murder was  half way through the movie and that was fun. I didn’t enjoy the scares since it was a PG13 movie.

Then her parents came to pick her up and I was picked up too. Later that night I asked her out and she said yes and now were together. if this is you can, you can get to know things about new people that you meet and create new friendships and and relationships with a simple text.

Reflection on Media Fluency

Posted by Jorge Dasilva in Technology - Freshman · Hull · c1 Band on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at 8:10 pm
I learned that while advertising, it should be very exciting and interesting to look at but it has to have organizacion to it. I took out the purple square that was in the center and moved the text to the center of the slide because with the pictures on one side and the text on the other, there was a sort of un balance to it. I just wanted to make it balanced. Research is very important before you start a project because with no research you'll either make up information or rush through it all and the outcome won't be so good.

Media fluency

What I learned from the website that were provided for us. The main “theme” that I interpreted on all the sites was that the slide should be very colorful and interesting to look at so I made my slide to be very colorful and exciting. I used vaporwave art  as the background because it's so colorful and i also used other, smaller images which correlate to the text and other things that I am interested in. And some interesting facts about me. This is like what advertisers do. They make their poster board so that people will notice them with larger text and colorful colors.
