Globalization Benchmark (Link & Reflection)

Posted by Michael Kelly in Globalization - Laufenberg on Friday, June 3, 2011 at 12:48 pm
My keynote presentation can be downloaded here: https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0B-Wg_qvvaetUNmM0YjgzOTUtYzFhMS00ZWUxLWI5NzAtOGM4MzEzM2M4OTY3&hl=en_US

The most challenging part of the benchmark was relating some the Philadelphia-related photos to globalization. Some of the photos and scenarios in Philadelphia related to certain topics easily, but when you had to relate the photo and the topic to the entire world, that is where is got a little challenging. Sure enough, I successfully and accurately related the photos and topics to the world, but it took a lot of thought and research beforehand.

Luckily, I had several of photos I had all ready captured that were taken in Philadelphia, that related to the globalization topics. I only had to go out and actually capture a few other photos, but for the most part, I all ready captured photos before the project was assigned. I don't know if that was cheating or not, but the pictures that I have all ready taken, were very good photos, and clearly related to globalization. If I were to go out and search for new photos, I don't think the new photos would have matched up to the quality of my previously taken photos.

My favorite image is probably the photo of my cousin getting his first tattoo. The photo is very comical and entertaining, but it also relates to culture, and how body art has been a social norm in the United States, even though tattoos originated in other countries first.

The photos I captured are not that unique to Philadelphia. I am pretty sure I could capture these images in another city in the United States. Nonetheless, the photos still depict globalization.

Favorite Benchmark

Posted by Michael Kelly in Statistics - Thompson on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at 2:23 pm

Throughout the year, I have taken part in completing several statistics benchmarks that helped further my knowledge on statistics, all while having fun doing so. One benchmark in particular that I enjoyed the most was the most recent benchmark I completed. The assignment was to create an informative study guide, which dealt with topics that were going to be presented in future math classes at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, the college I will be attending next year. This benchmark was truly helpful, and I can honestly say that I will take this study guide with me to college, to help remind me of how complete math problems that were mentioned in my created study guide.

I actually took my time with this benchmark, because I figured from the start of this assignment, that I might need this study guide in the future. I first researched the math classes that I will be taking part in next year at West Chester University. After figuring out the math class I would be taking, I wrote down the main topics that were going to be discussed throughout the course. I compiled a list of useful information needed in order to complete problems that were related to the topics that were going to be discussed in my future math classes. I provided several example problems per topic along with the solutions to the sample problems, as well as definitions to key vocabulary words and notes relating to the topics. I organized all my information into an informative, and easy-to-read packet for myself for the future.

One thing that was interesting and surprising to me while completing this project was that I realized that all of Science Leadership Academy’s core values were used during the completion of this assignment. I inquired information from outside sources in order to figure out what topics were going to be discussed in my future math class. I then researched how to properly approach and complete problems that were related to the math topics that were going to be discussed in my future math class. I collaborated with a math professor from West Chester University, and he confirmed the topics that were going to be taught to me next year. After my information was finalized, I compiled my information into a study guide, which is how I presented my information. Now here I am, writing a blog post reflecting on my experience completing this benchmark.

All in all, this was my favorite benchmark of the year. I learned a lot, and it’s one of those assignments that will stick with you in the future. I benefited greatly from this benchmark, and I highly recommend students do the same benchmark, to help them with their future math class in college. Like I said, I will absolutely take this packet with me to college, and I strongly believe I will reference this packet when completing future assignments in my college math classes.

Smoke Outline Portrait

Posted by Michael Kelly in Art - Senior Art - Hull on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 9:28 am
I opened a portrait of myself on Photoshop, and used the pen tool to neatly extract my entire face from the image. I then did some simple photoshop techniques to make the image into a silhouette. I downloaded a brush set of different images of smoke, and made the smoke outline the silhouette. I then changed the color scheme of the entire image to a rainbow-like color.

I did use a tutorial while completing this image, but I strayed away from copying the entire tutorial, so I used my own ideas. This photo took me several hours to complete, and I am pleased with the final result.

Yearbook Senior Page

I created the senior page for Megan Doe and I. It isn't that complex, nor was it difficult to create, but it does look professional, organized and appealing.

Funny Oranges

Posted by Michael Kelly in Art - Senior Art - Hull on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 9:16 am
I was browsing different brushes for Photoshop CS3, when I came across a brush set of funny animated faces. I thought it would be comical and appealing to apply these animated faces to different fruit. This photo in particular I found to be the best. Solely because it is simple and funny.

Fire Portrait

Posted by Michael Kelly in Art - Senior Art - Hull on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 9:08 am
I was on a forum that had a variety of Photoshop tutorials. As I was browsing, I came across a tutorial on how to create a Fire Portrait, very similar to the one I created. This photo manipulation took a few hours. I did used stock photos and a tutorial to create the below image. After completing this image, I learned how to use a variety of tools featured on Photoshop CS3, especially the warp tool and brush customization tool.
