Final Printmaking Post-Rene Hart

  • What is your element? Name and atomic number

My element was Helium and it’s atomic number is one

  • Tell the reader about your element, history, function/use and so on.

Helium’s  name originates from Helios, which is the greek word for the sun. Helium was detected in the sun before it was found on Earth years after. In 1868, Pierre-Jules César Janssen noticed a yellow line in the sun while he was studying a solar eclipse.Sir Norman Lockyer, an English astronomer, realized that the yellow line could not be produced by any element known at the time.  It was guessed that a new element on the sun was responsible for the yellow emission. The element was named helium by Lockyer.Helium is not gravitationally bound to the earth. Helium gas is used to inflate blimps, scientific balloons and party balloons. It is used as an inert shield for arc welding, to pressurize the fuel tanks of liquid fueled rockets and in supersonic wind tunnels. It is also used in rockets.

  • How did you get the idea for the imagery you chose?

I felt like a balloon wouldn’t be original because many people know there’s helium in balloons. I did a blimp because I didn’t know helium was in blimps so I thought others probably wouldn’t know that too.

  • What process did you go through to make this print?

First I sketched out three 4x6 inch designs for my printmaking. One big thing I had to focus on was negative and positive space so I made sure not to draw too many details. After I finished all three of my sketches, I picked which one I thought was the best. From there, I got a thin piece of tissue paper that was also 4x6 inches. I placed the paper on top of my design and traced my design onto the tissue paper. One my design was on the tissue paper I grabbed a styrofoam 4x6” template where I would created my print. I flipped the tracing paper so I could trace my design backwards onto the template. When my template was finally finish I was ready to print. I spreaded printing paint on a plate so I could use my roller to as a paint brush for my template. After rolling a couple layers of paint on my print I took a white piece of paper, and placed my print backwards on the paper. I flipped the paper and print and used a wooden spoon to ensure my full design would get on the paper. Once I thought it was printed I lifted my template off slowly to look at my creation. I repeated the painting process two more times. Once I was finished I put my prints on the shelf to dry and washed off my template.

  • What would you do differently if you did this print a second time?

I would have taken more time to smooth the print out with the spoon because I felt like some prints could have came out better.

  • What part of the project did you enjoy the most? Describe the step and what you liked so much about it.

I liked the step where I smoothed my print with the wooden spoon because it felt soothing and it was fun to look at the results.

My Change for the WNBA

Posted by Reneke Hart in English 1 · Giknis · D Band on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 8:56 pm

As you all know, for the past couple of months I’ve been researching problems in the WNBA. As I stated before the WNBA has a funding and publicity problem. In my first post, I introduced my problem. In my second post, I gave some solutions on how we can better the WNBA, like expanding or advertising more. Over the course of the past months I’ve learned about people like Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins, who are underpaid in their profession. I’ve learned about  over 5,000 women college basketball athletes that are told they won’t be able to live out their dreams. All this is because the WNBA can’t afford to expand their organisation.

For my You and the World project, I wanted to bring attention to a problem that not to many know or care about. Among further research, there’s about 202,000 people that view the WNBA on ESPN. The NBA has 1.5 viewers. Are there any guesses why? Publicity plays a huge role when you have an organization so I feel like the WNBA would be better socially and financially if they had more supporters. It helps that the NBA funds the WNBA, but many people don’t know that. Due to the fact that the NBA barely talks about the WNBA.

I felt like Gatorade would be a great organization to change this. Gatorade is one of the top sports drink in the world. There brand is everywhere, in commercials, billboards and many professional games. Everytime I see an advertisement for gatorade though, itś mostly a famous man talking about or drinking the drink. I feel like this should change. The WNBA doesn’t even have a third of the NBA’s supporters. If Gatorade put more female basketball players in their commercial, it can open so many doors for the WNBA. There will be more supporters and viewers, but it can also build a better relationship. between Gatorade and the WNBA.

At first, I didn’t know what to do for my Agent Of Change. I had the idea of raising money for the WNBA, but I felt like I wouldn’t raise it enough for it to really be effective. Then, I thought of a presentation but that wouldn’t get as much supporters as I want to feel like my Agent of Change would be successful. Finally I came up with the idea of informing people about my problem and getting some to write letters to Gatorade about letting more female basketball players in their advertisements. I knew informing people wouldn’t be an issue, but getting people to write letters would be the challenge. Writing isn’t everyone’s interest. Luckily, I got my friends Randy and Sofia to help me write letters. All three of us wrote our letters one doc. We all edited each other’s letter and I emailed all three letters.

This is a picture of Randy Le typing his letter.

In conclusion, I think my You and the world project was successful. It was a lot of work for me,and stressful at times. I learned so much about the profession I hope to one day have. Even though it was challenging, I am glad I did this project. Some things that went right for me was my research and my interview with Diamond Wallace. Some challenges I had were writing a slate post and getting people to wright letters for me. Overall, this project was a

Art Negative Space-Rene Hart

Posted by Reneke Hart in Art - Freshman · Hull · e1 Band on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 12:01 am

Negative space is when the outline of an object is lighter or darker than the background. In my picture, the object's outline is pink while the background is black. This helps to make my object the center of attention in the whole picture. Negative Space makes a drawing easy to focus on because there are two colors that contrast theirselves.

Script

(Applause dying out)

Rene- Welcome back to the Black-eye-of-the-Month club.Today we have a very exciting show planned for you with special guest Junior from the Absolutely True Diary of a part-time Indian.

(Applause)

Moriah- In fact, that's what our show is about today!

Rene- For those of you that don’t know, The Absolutely True Diary of a part-time Indian is about a kid, named Junior. He describes different problems he faced as an Indian and stories of his teenage life on the Spokane reservation. Even though the story is a young adult fiction there are many things in there that did happen in real life.

Justine- Okay, before we talk about anything can we please talk about Penelope and Junior. They were so cute together.

Moriah- She was a horrible girlfriend

(Audience gasps)

Moriah- She is, how did she forget Valentines Day?

Justine- Not everyone has a perfect memory.

Rene- Well technically, that wasn’t his girlfriend. And he wasn’t the best “boyfriend” either. Who takes someone to Denny’s without having the money to pay for them.

Justine- Not everyone is rich.

Moriah- Who’s everyone’s favorite character?

Justine-Penelope of course. She was so caring amd had a great sense of humor. I love the fact that she wanted to help homeless people during Halloween by donating to them.

Moriah- I love Rowdy. I think he really challenged Junior throughout the whole book. It makes it more interesting to read.

Rene: Now let's play a quick game before we introduce you to our special guest, Junior.

(Audience claps)

Rene: Before we get started we should go over the rules. Two of you Justine and Moriah are basically playing trivia but the answer is only him (junior) or her (penelope). Now there are only three questions but each question wrong you get slapped viciously across the face

Justine: wow ok

Moriah: sounds good

Rene: Number 1, This person has a brain disorder

Moriah: his mom

Justine: (slaps moriah vigorously)

Rene: that's gotta hurt but now for number two, who forgot valentines day?

Justine: penelope

Moriah: Junior

Justine: (Slaps moriah even harder)

Rene: yikes, Moriah this is your chance. Whose name is albert?

Moriah: penelope

Justine: junior you idiot (slaps moriah)

Rene- Bonus question, who won the rematch game against wellpinit?

(special guest enters)

Moriah- rowdy?

Vincent- (slaps moriah) actually, it was me

(crowd cheers and applauses)

Justine- OMG IT”S JUNIOR FROM THE ABSOLUTELY TRUE DIARY OF A PART TIME INDIAN

(more applause)

Rene- well Junior, can you tell us about that day?

Vincent/Junior: It was an Intense game.. Especially against my bestie jawn but at the end of the day we came up with a W.

Moriah- What was life like growing up as poor indian?

Vincent/junior: It was a struggle but i got by. My grandmother was as support system that got me through it but like you guys know what happened, but it was fine it is where my bestfriend came from but, its my home

Justine- So what happened with you and Penelope after the book ?

Vincent/ Junior: Well we got serious but she cheated so yeah it's whatever

Justine- What can we expect in your future, drawing? Writing?

Vincent - I mean I am a writer but i will always love drawing

Moriah- Well thank you for coming here.

Vincent- Thank you

Rene- We’ll be back after this commercial break…

WNBA Basketball: Expansion or Financing?

Posted by Reneke Hart in English 1 · Giknis · D Band on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 10:29 pm

As you read in my last slate post, I basically summarized why the WNBA should be expanded and why the players are being underpaid. Due to some further research, I’ve found out that it is more complicated and easy achieving this. I am posting again to give further explanation.

According to a recent blog post on Swish Appeal, there are many reasons why expansion could be a good or bad thing. One great outcome from expanding the WNBA is a more expanded viewership. For example, the WNBA partnered with Twitter in 2016 and ever since they joined forces, the WNBA’s views launched up. The more popular the WNBA is the more people will want to partner with them. Another reason why the WNBA should expand is because we are losing WNBA culture. When I say culture I am talking about legacies, talent, and history. For example, when the WNBA was at its peak it had 16 teams. They lost 4 teams because there started to be a lack of interest in the ownerships. These teams had extremely talented individuals and were extremely talent as a team. One of the old teams, the Houston Comets, were the only team to win the WNBA championship four consecutive years! They also were the only WNBA team that was invited to the white house. If we keep these teams alive and expand the franchise the WNBA could be bigger than the NBA one day.

The reasons why the WNBA shouldn’t be expanded are fair but can be solved problems. It’s no surprise that money is an issue. This source says that only half of WNBA teams actually make a profit in any season. These six teams are owned by people who also own a NBA franchise. There is also the wage gap the WNBA has to make up. There are too many underpaid players in the WNBA, expansion will make money tighter. The second problem this source lists is international competition. Players have been forced to go overseas to play for international teams so they can provide better for their families. International teams pay way more than the WNBA does, because they are in a better place financially. For example, Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi missed the whole 2015 season to play overseas. They paid her $1.5 million.

The Bay Area is trying to make a change for the league. The Bay Area’s NBA team, the Warriors, are currently building a new arena. They are expected to move in this arena in the 2019-2020 season. The co-owner of the Warriors, Joe Lacob wants to make a WNBA team for the Bay area and host their home games at the Warriors current arena. This is great because that will be more people drafted in the WNBA each year and more publicity for the franchise. This is a beginning for the expansion for the WNBA.

My original plan for my Original research was going to be an interview with either the head coach of the New York Liberty’s, Katie Smith or the assistant coach, Herb Williams. I emailed both the Manager of fan development, Brett Tessler and the Director of communications, Vincent Novicki. When they both didn’t get back to me I tried contacting the coach of Imhotep's girls basketball team. Due to the fact that they are preparing for states, he was not able to do the interview. As a late result I decided to interview someone in my community who knows a great deal about the WNBA. I interviewed Diamond Wallace. Diamond gave me a different insight on the topic. She explained more problems that the WNBA faces, which made me realize that it isn’t entirely their fault that the league is so small and there is wage gaps. Diamond said “The only reason why I think they are doing bad is because there is not a lot of entertainment. A lot of people look for 360 dunks and crossovers and the WNBA doesn’t really offer that.”That is something I didn't even think about. I appreciate her cooperation and the knowledge she gave to me about my topic.

This is an image from my interview with Diamond Wallace.

I am not sure what I want to do for my Agent of Change. Diamond gave me the idea of creating a website to explain what I’ve learned and what everyone can do about it. I was also thinking of writing an email to various NBA teams to try to do an act like Joe Lacob is willing to do. I am open to ideas so please comment below if you have any.

WNBA- Rights vs. Reality

Posted by Reneke Hart in English 1 · Giknis · D Band on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 8:51 pm

Did you know the average ticket prices in the WNBA in 2011 were $15? This is crazy considering that there are tickets in the NBA sold for thousands of dollars. I’m going to be do my You & The World project on Women in basketball. I’m interested in this topic because I am female who plays basketball. I take this sport seriously so I felt like it would be helpful to know how the WNBA and college women basketball players were treated. I learned that there is a huge difference between a NBA and WNBA player, and it’s not just the difference in the gender. In one article I read called “ Top WNBA Salaries vs. NBA Salaries: Who Gets Paid More? “ I learned that Steph Curry made 11.4 million dollars in 2016. Yet, the highest paid WNBA player, Nneka Ogwumike gets paid 95,000 dollars. Steph curry isn’t even the highest paid NBA player and he gets paid over 75% more than Ogwumike. Ogwumike works just as hard as Curry to get to where she’s at right now. There are many wage gaps like this in the WNBA

Image result for nneka ogwumike

This is a picture of Nneka Ogwumike from her twitter's profile picture.

This is the problem. Women aren’t treated as equals to men. When young girls see this, they get discouraged. Sometimes as a result of being discouraged, people give up. You might not think this is a big deal but it can become a major problem. The WNBA is small. It only consists of 144 players at maximum. So if there are a bunch of women the WNBA because of the shortage of pay there will be no WNBA. Without a WNBA why would colleges offer scholarships to their women’s basketball teams? Many people use these scholarships to go to school, so that’s a significant amount of women not attending college. A big cause of under pay in the WNBA is the fact that the WNBA doesn’t get enough publicity. The more people watch the WNBA and buy tickets to their games, the more money they make. The WNBA gets their funds from the NBA.

The WNBA’s structure is completely different from the NBA’s as well. There are 349 women’s basketball college teams. This is great but it’s also one big system filled with heartbreaks. There are only 12 teams in the WNBA conference and only 12 players permitted to a team. In the NBA there are 30 teams. There are at least 14 players per team and 491 players in the league total. No wonder why WNBA players aren’t getting paid what they deserve. The WNBA doesn’t have enough publicity because the league is too small.

Image result for all wnba teams

These are the name of all twelve teams.

I want to change the salaries, team expansion, and amount of publicity the WNBA has. An idea I had was to write a letter to the WNBA and NBA explaining how unfair this is to all the hardworking females that want to play basketball. If they expand the players in the WNBA maybe more people would watch and buy tickets to games. With more people watching, the publicity would go up, along with the money they indorse. Then female basketball players would get paid the equivalent amount to men in the NBA.We need to act on these problems because our actions can determine the next woman’s future.

This is my annotated bibliography. It has most interesting facts I’ve found about this topic.

In our English 1 class, we read Macbeth for a majority of our second quarter. My partner,Tyria Brown Smith, and I decided to make a theatrical playbill to display what we read in the play. On the front page is the cover. I drew three mouths to represent the three witches, who influenced Macbeth’s decisions throughout the play. There is an ear ,at the side of the cover, that is a symbol for Macbeth’s ear . I drew the words “Macbeth” in a speech bubble starting at the ear to the mouths to indicate the witches whispering to him. Tyria did the summary of the plot. She explained how Macbeth went from being one of the most honorable person in Scotland to the most hated tyrant.

We made this project because we thought it would be easy to understand and we could do alot with it creatively. There was much room for us to be imaginative. For example our character list had pictures next to every character, Some characters looked more serious and some were completely goofy. All the characters had different shaped heads to make it more interesting.  We also used word play for the advertisements to make the playbill more commercial.

Tech final slide-Rene Hart

Posted by Reneke Hart in Technology - Freshman · Hull · e2 Band on Friday, December 8, 2017 at 11:52 am
Tech Me slide (4)

In tech class I was critiqued on my original slide. I heard feedback like reducing the tangent I had in the original slide. I learned that  I can play with the background and foreground in many different ways.I was also told to get rid of the speech bubble.  I was told I had a good eye for design so there wasn’t much feedback.

I made many different changes to my slide. The first thing I did was get rid of the half basketball court in the background. It was hard to work with and had a weird shape that I couldn’t change. Second I added just a basket to the picture. It was made on a slant so I put it in a corner in the background. I kept the basketball because I felt like it grabbed the most attention. I changed the font of my phrase and got rid of the speech bubble.

Researching on Presentation Zen really helped my design. I read that “vision trumps all other senses” and tried to make that saying come to life in my design. The website also gave me great ideas on how to contrast colors and shapes. I think my biggest source for my final design was my peers. There designs really inspired me. Youtube videos also gave me great ideas. I feel like I perfected my slide.

Presentation Slide-Rene Hart

Tech Me slide (1)
I made this slide visual. What I mean by that is I had the basketball focus in the front and the basketball court faded in the background. As I read on Presentation Zen "Vision trumps all other senses. I tried to harmonized the background, midground, and foreground so people focus on the foreground before looking in the back. I tried to incorporate movement by having the basketball coming in from the side. I put the speech bubble on the basketball because I knew that was the first place people will look at before moving on to the rest of the slide. I wanted the images to have bright colors like orange, blue, and white. To balance the colors, I made the background gray. My design was inspired by the "Make it visual" paragraph and picture on Presentation Zen.

Home Network- Rene Hart

Posted by Reneke Hart in Technology - Freshman · Hull · e2 Band on Friday, October 13, 2017 at 2:43 pm
My home network includes many components. My coaxial cord connects the world wide web and my modem router. The ethernet cable cords connect to my first and third tv. It also connects to my dad's computer. My family's phones, ipads, computers, second tv, and fourth tv are wireless. I learned that home networks are a lot more confusing then I thought. I think everyone should know about their homework network so they can solve a lot of cable problems themselves and save money.
