Globalization Qtr 4 Benchmark

Animal Cruelty

Have you ever wondered what life is like for a celebrity's pet? Yes I'm talking about the pampered pooches you see on television and in all the magazines with the designer leashes and matching outfits. Well now take a step down from the glamour and the cameras and think about the animals in your very neighborhoods. Take an even deeper look and think about the animals who have ended up in shelters because of animal cruelty. Many places in Philadelphia have been known for having many untended animals.

Many of them have become strays. Animal cruelty can start anywhere from not giving your pet the proper amount of food to beating your animal. Overall it still has the same effect on the animal, heartbreak. Yes animals feel it to. Imagine if the person you loved and trusted decided to just hurt you and beat until you could barely move, just because they wanted to. Now for the main question, what exactly is animal cruelty?  Animal cruelty is the infliction of suffering or harm upon animals, other than humans, for purposes other than self defense. Long story short, it means cause some type of pain to an animal other than when you are trying to protect yourself.

One example of animal cruelty I have was even with my own dog Kujo. When Kujo was two months old he was tied to a fence as the owners moved out of the home and left him there to basically die. When we stumbled upon him, he was very skeletal and very dirty. If you looked into his eyes it was as if his whole body told a story of his pain. As a result of this horrific experience, Kujo now suffers from a dream anxiety disorder. Dream anxiety disorder is a sleep disorder that is characterized by very frequent nightmares. Even though this disorder is usually diagnosed for humans, Kujo has been diagnosed with this because of what the doctor called post traumatic stress. Now Kujo has to be taken care of a little bit more than a regular dog would need to be, but none complains because he is a joy to have. Animal cruelty is something that should be taken very seriously because poor pets like Kujo are the ones who have to deal with the physically torture but the people who are causing the pain will feel the emotional torture.

Capstone2012

Posted by Sekai Gonzalez on Friday, May 25, 2012 at 2:04 pm
For my senior capstone I took a journey into the life of a performer. Many people do not understand that performers are people too, on and off of the stage. Many people who consider themselves performers are usually passionate and dedicated to what they do.

First I had to choose a topic that I felt best reflected me as an individual student at SLA and something that interested me. Next I had to figure out how I could portray all of it in not only a presentation, but in a way that shows it's importance to me. I had to also get a mentor and doing plenty of research.  One obstacle I ran into was that the show I helped make the choreography for kept changing. The date kept changing because the acts that were in the show weren't prepared. Eventually Ashley and I came up with a schedule that worked for everyone.  Another obstacle that I ran into was that I kept changing how I wanted to portray my project. At first I was going to show a simple slide show but I knew just having a slide show wouldn't be as appealing to the audience. I decided to create videos and gather extra footage that would help the audience members feel more intact with my presentation and more entertained.

World Of 100 Analysis

Posted by Sekai Gonzalez on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at 2:27 pm

Age: I noticed that many people are between the ages of 15 and 64. So I believe that means that many people don't live very long after 65.

Religion: The amount of muslims over powers the amount of other religions.

Electricity: This graph shows that 65% of the people will not have access to electricity.

My answers seemed very close to what the actual answers were. I was off with a few answers but I was close enough. I was a little of when it came to the religions but otherwise I was pretty much on point. The thing about the life span of these people kind of made me sad but it didn't surprise me. Many of these people are better off dead no offense but they go through so much already. I feel bad that that is the way it has to be.

Benchmark Reflection

After researching many different interesting countries I decided to use Mali and Ethiopia. The official name of Mali is Republic of Mali. The political system is a semi presidential system of government. They have been collapsing for a while now. The official name of Ethiopia is Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia or  "Yeltyop'iya Federalawi" in the native language. The flag is a tricolor of green yellow and horizontal stripes with a blue disk and a yellow outlined star and rays in the center. They both are very interesting and somewhat similar so I decided to write about them.

Well to start off my process I did a lot of research on Mali and Ethiopia. I decided to do extra research as I went along for the simple fact that these places were really interesting and I believe more people should read about them and want to learn more. I had to think of a creative way to portray this information without boring the audience.

The five point frame was actually very hard to follow even though it describes exactly the information you need.  I found it difficult to follow because many things were hard to research about especially the one about the societal response to problems. If I could change one thing about my product I would have put forth a lot more work and information because I know I could do more.

My partner and I chose this topic because it was something that caught both of our attention. We both love art and believe that censored art is something that has a deep meaning. I really liked that we could be creative with our projects. I felt as though we could go anywhere with it and expres ourselves. The one challenging thing was trying to tie it all in together. The most interesting thing that we investigated was "Piss Christ" because learning about it's background was very challenging because many people find it sacreligious. This project could have had more time put into it. The one place we ran into trouble was trying to upload it. On thing that went well with this project was gathering the information. If I had to do something over I would pick a different topic because it was hard to find things to speak about. I learned that many things in our world are looked down upon but have a deep meaning and people don't seem to be ready for it.

Blog Post #4

Posted by Sekai Gonzalez in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at 9:16 am
My blog 4 post will cover communication. Im am writing an email to Tom Burford discussing the reason we need to abolish smoking. I realized many things such as we both have a personal view of smoking because it happens within both of our families and has had a great effect on us personally. I believe that this letter would get Tom Burford a little more interested in what I am trying to do because I tried to state many matters that I know that he stands up against. I feel as though writing an email was a great way to communicate because many people in this era use computers and technology especially people with his type of status, and also this would be a great way for him to communicate back with me faster.

Mr. Tom Burford,

Hello, My name is Sekai A. Harris and I am a senior at Science Leadership Academy. I am contacting you because I feel as though we both stand for the same thing when it comes to Smoking. I am anti-smoking because many people I know do it and I have seen the effects of it. My grandmother, mother, Father, and many other family members are/were smokers so I have been effected by it as well. I know about what happened to your father as well and that is why I am writing you today. We need to try and find a way to abolish smoking at least starting with Philadelphia. Please try to think about if this is something your would be interested in trying help me with because this is something i feel strongly about and it is something that would benefiet a lot of people.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Hoping to hear from you soon,                                                                                                               Sekai A. Bureacracy Project Reflection

Federal Student Aid, an office of the U.S. Department of Education, ensures that all eligible individuals can benefit from federally funded financial assistance for education beyond high school. We consistently champion the promise of postsecondary education to all Americans and its value to our society.

if I could change one thing I would change the length of the whole process itself.

I believe it became so complicated because they don't want just everyone to get it, they want the people who actually need it to receive it first.

As of Monday, January 8th, 2007, the new Philadelphia Smoking Ban is in effect.  City health inspectors will be imposing $300 fines on local eating and drinking establishments in violation of the new law. January 2007, the Clean Indoor Air Worker Protection Law went into effect, banning smoking in Philadelphia’s restaurants creating a healthy environment for workers and their customers. The law also bans smoking in outdoor seating areas and patios of restaurants and bar, A 2007 Gallup poll found that 54% of Americans favored a complete ban inside of restaurants, 34% favored a ban in all hotel rooms, and 29% favored a ban inside of bars.

The people are the stakeholders in the issue. People who are smoking are not only putting themselves at risk but they are putting others at risk. Many people smoke in public places therefore causing second hand smoke. Secondhand smoke is classified as a “known human carcinogen” (cancer-causing agent) by the US Environmental Protection Agency.( http://www.epa.gov/gateway/science/air.html)

The Foundation for a Smoke Free America provides school-based programs to educate children about the dangers of smoking. In 1986, Patrick Reynolds became the first tobacco industry figure to turn his back on the cigarette makers. He is the grandson of the tobacco company founder R.J. Reynolds. If people are ready to change America to a smoke free America, they need to start with the children. If we educate our children now they can be the reason that we save other lives.

Lobbying Blog Post 2

Who represents me?

Tom Buford represents what I believe in as well as him.

How has my legislator voted on my issue in the past?

He is upon most of the legislators that voted against the policy for smoking.

What do you and your representative have in common?

We are both against smoking in a literal sense.

Protecting Incentives for The Adoption of Children with Special Needs Act of 2009

Posted by Sekai Gonzalez in American Government - Laufenberg on Monday, November 7, 2011 at 1:53 pm
This is how I believed I could portray my information the best about my law.

  • Explain your decision making for choosing the bill.
-I chose this bill because I have always been very interested in the adoption of children. I also am very interested in children with special needs. When I came across this law I knew this was the right law for me.
  • Why did you choose the particular presentation format?
-I chose this format because I believed that it could stand on its own and that it was more of an attention grabber.
  • What challenges did you overcome in completing the project?
-I overcame the temptation to just not work.
  • How would you do the project differently if you had to do it over again?
-I would make more of an presentation.
  • What did the research and investigation tell you about the creation process... from idea to bill to law?
-It told how hard it actually is to create a law. The bill has to go through many people before being considered a law.
  • Was the process easier or harder than you imagined based on your particular bill/law research?
    - It was actually harder than I thought it would be. I thought that the president had the whole say but it turns out that many people have a say in this process.

Lobbying Topic 1: Smoking

Posted by Sekai Gonzalez in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at 12:40 pm
My lobbying topic is against smoking. Many people in not only Philadelphia, but the world are smoking and it honestly is not healthy. It turns your lungs grey and puts many people at risk for diseases and even cancer. The reason I chose smoking as my lobbying topic is because many people I know are smokers. I wanted to find out more facts about smoking. I wanted to know what  hooks people to them and also what are some of the effects.

Musical Instrument Blog #1

Posted by Sekai Gonzalez in Physics - Echols on Friday, May 27, 2011 at 4:36 pm
The instrument that I am attempting to create is a piano because I really like pianos. Pianos are usually played by the person pressing down on the keys which hits a string inside the piano that hit an object to produce the sound. Pianos are mainly shaped as rectangles with a circular end. As I continued to research about the different pianos, it made me think about how I can change the sound that comes from it. I thought that maybe if I apply a certain amount of tension on certain strings, it will produce a different sound that may be higher or lower than usual. Also I thought about changing the shape of the piano to see if that will have any effect on the production of my music.
