Samuel Kabangai 10% time project

Posted by Samuel Kabangai in Anatomy and Physiology - Best on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 1:21 pm
For my 10% time project, I decided to look at the risks of tattoo's. A lot of the people I know are getting tattoos, some fro professionals and other from a random guy in the basement with the tools. I wanted to look up and inform people about the risks and also some examples of tattoos going wrong. My goal is to inform people and make them think twice about the choices they want to make.

S.Kabangai- Bringing G.H.T.C to Life- Q4 Benchmark

Samuel Kabangai

Giving Hope To Children (GHTC) is an organization dedicated to helping children in Sierra Leone with their educational and everyday needs. This organization was founded by two students who believed that giving back to their community is very important to humanity.

These are children that have either lost their parents or live with single parent, who just have families that are too poor to fund their educational needs like paying for their school fees, buying their uniforms, school supplies or sometimes even have enough to eat.

·       What did you find most challenging about this project?
One thing that I found challenging about the project is finding different organizations in Philadelphia that do the same work GHTC is doing.

·       How did you go about finding this story?
This story was easy because the founders of GHTC are my sisters. I have been looking at them step by stem and I fell like this project was a good way to applaud them of what they are doing and hopefully get them noticed by people around the world.

·       Why do you think this story does not receive more attention?
The only reason I can think of is that, the organization is not well known. Sierra Leone itself does not get noticed as much, so a project that is still rising will be hard to get noticed.

·       Do you think this story will get more attention over the next
 few months?  Why?  Why not?

Yes, because my goal and dream is that from this project, GHTC will get noticed and broadcasted to a bigger, diverse and broader audience.

·       What did you learn?
I learned that in order to make change in a nation or country, you have to take a step that will make a different regardless if you get help or not. I want this project to be my first but not last step that I take to create change and better my country and others.

S.Kabangai- Italy & Russia

Posted by Samuel Kabangai in Globalization - Laufenberg on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 1:58 am

Hello, My name is Samuel Kabangai, I attended Science Leadership Academy (SLA). For our quarter Globalization project, had to compare the 5 point frame work to the countries that we were assigned and the one that we selected. The two countries that I had were Russia and Italy. During the course of this project, I saw that both Russia and Italy are more alike than different. I based this thesis on the 5 point frame work ( environmental damage, climate change, hostile neighbors, friendly trade partners and Society's Response to its Environmental Problems). One brief compression of both of the countries is that they both have the same environmental damage hazards (volcanoes, erosions, floods etc.) It was also interesting to know that both countries handled the problems differently. Italy took long to solve their problems but eventually handled it while Russia just left the problems to solve themselves.

The 5 point frame work was fairly easy for me. It was easy for me to research the information that I needed. I had setbacks and hard time finding some of the information that needed, but it wasn't at an extreme point where in I couldn't find none of the information that I needed.

If I could change anything, I will give more time for the project to be done. Even though the information is easy to find, it also takes a long time to do all the research and put it into a finished product. I am just happy that I learned some new information that i found interesting. And I am happy that Im finished!

  1. For the language portion, I feel as though I was pretty close with the actually data. During the process, I was thinking about the people that I know and also the information that I know based on languages around the world. I was surprised to see that there were more people in the world who speak Chinese other than english.

    chart_8

I may say that for the geographical locations, I was not as accurate as I though I was. I did not base my estimations on any facts but only my thoughts which came from my surroundings. After I saw the graph for the real data answers I was not surprised because the result made sense. At the time when I was filling out the data, I knew that China was the most populated, but I didn't know that their population was that much in order to alter results like that and have amount in the data.

    chart_9

In the Religion category, I did not know much about each and every religion to make my predictions, thats why I think that my guesses were soo off. I was surprised to see that Christianity have a higher level. I was surprised because based on older information that I new a couple years ago, the nation of Islam was more populated and I did not know that the information changed.

6. Add a half a bottle of limejuice and mix.

7. Add the amount of sugar you want and mix until it’s at the taste you want.

(Lime and sugar depends on the amount of juice you have.)

 GINGER ROOTS

Ginger is well known as a remedy for travel sickness, nausea and indigestion and is used for wind, colic, irritable bowel, loss of appetite, chills, cold, flu, poor circulation, menstrual cramps, dyspepsia (bloating, heartburn, flatulence), indigestion and gastrointestinal problems such as gas and stomach cramps. Ginger is a powerful anti-inflammatory herb and there has been much recent interest in its use for joint problems. It has also been indicated for arthritis, fevers, headaches, toothaches, coughs, bronchitis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, to ease tendonitis, lower cholesterol and blood pressure and aid in preventing internal blood clots.

SELF REFLECTION

In this unit, I have learned a lot of information about what we consume and it’s origin. What I mean by its origin is where everything is processed through the food industry. I like to add that the food industries have many secrets that have been exposed that left me questioning the food system and what we consume on a daily basis.  The Food Inc. documentary was a factual and evidential piece that encouraged me to be more aware of what I choose to eat.

One of the biggest problems that I came across with our food system is the ignorance and the “I don’t care” attitude that majority of the public has towards the food they eat and the process of it or what it contains in these products. Another problem that I feel as though is an issue is the fact that many companies keep the process of how they make the food a secret and they are so reluctant of letting people see how the food is made. Lastly, what I found to be a problem is how livestock are being treated before they are slaughtered and how they are being slaughtered in the house.

Many people can change or edit what they eat; it’s hard to change diet but it can be done slowly and step by step. Some changes I can make is that I can be more careful of what I eat and ever since the class; I have started eating more fruit and drinking more water. Honestly I still eat Chinese food on a regular basis and I also mainly eat home cooked meals. One thing that works for me is that, I exercise a lot and work out a lot to keep my body in shape and healthy. I sense a change in my healthy, I have more energy and generally I feel more and more better.

S.Kabangai- Chinese Immigration

Posted by Samuel Kabangai in American History - Laufenberg on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 11:17 pm
What i like about the project was that it made me do a lot of thinking and i learned a lot of history by going out on my own and researching the information that i needed.

I was surprised to find out that the Chinese are responsible for a lot of the development of America, even back then. I also learned that the Chinese were an alternative laborers back in the day during the early days when slavery was just abolished, because the Chinese were doing manual labor for cheap.
The actions of an individual builds up a standard that others can build up on and or improve on it or do more from that standard.

It gives the background information on a particular subject and it shows the changes as time goes on. One decision can change lives, build or destroy history and its possible to change everything around and give new ideas, views and impact on the history to come.

It can be explained more in details with all the information of what needs to be done and what needs to be give easily in a sentence or a paragraph.

I will first get a list of everything that i need and make a check list out of it. And also makes sure that i deeply understand everything that i have to do and everything that i need for the finial product.

Artist Statement

Hi my name is Samuel Kabangai, i attend school at Science Leadership Academy, i am the artist that created this design. For our fourth quarter project, we the students had to make some are pieces that were give to us by the teacher.

I liked the projects that we got and i was really excited to do these art pieces. One of my favorite pieces that i had to  make was the bike project. In this project we had to draw a bike that was in the classroom. Every project was exciting and i was always pleased with the final product that i produced at the end. I like when the projects seemed like a challenge because it made me work harder and do something that i did not think i could produce.

The tools that I used to make these are pieces were, charcoal, pencil, paint, computer etc. Every project needed to do something new and it made me use something new and every project was a new learning experience.

I am interested in playing the violent, to me its a very interesting instrument and its beautiful to me.  I am interested in learning the physics behind the instrument and i want to make my own violin after i research about the instrument.

The video is above is a video that shows people playing the violin. The use little guitar shaped instruments and use a stick with a soft edge that the rub against the strings of the instruments to produce the sound. They notes are changed by using your hands to make different keys like a guitar and also where and how the “stick” is moved. The violin is shaped like a mini guitar with more curves and cuts. The instrument looks beautiful and sounds beautiful.
When i look at the instrument i think if the curves and the way its shaped have anything to do with the sound, and i also think about why it has to be healed a certain way between the neck, why couldn't it be held like a guitar, and also does the length of the stick matter?

BLOG #2
Instrument- Trumpet

1. How is sound produced by this instrument (now that you know more about sound, please try to refer specifically to the energy transfer and vibrations)?
-
The player makes a buzzing sound with his lips into the mouth piece, this sound travels through the horn.

2. Based on your understanding, how are you changing the pitch? What physical characteristics are important in this instrument?
-The pitch can be changed by pressing different combinations of valves.

3. What materials will you actually be using for your instrument and why? How will you play your instrument? What is your plan for constructing the instrument?
-  pipe, because when you blow air in it it creates a sound that can be changed and controlled.

4. What outstanding questions do you still have?
What can i use to control the different pitch that a trumpet make on a pipe??

FRIDA KAHLO

Frida Kahlo de Rivera was a Mexican painter, born in Coyoacán. Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907 and she died on July 13, 1954. Frida Kahlo was best know for her self portraits and her paintings were loved by people because they expressed a lot of pain and passion in them. She was one of the great painters that came from Mexico and her work is celebrated every year.

Frida was one of four daughters born to a Hungarian-Jewish father and a mother of Spanish and Mexican Indian descent. Frida Kahlo did not want to become a painter, she was a survivor of a diseases called polio and at the age of 18 she was seriously injured in a bus accident, it took Frida Kahlo a year to recover from the accident, she started to paint while she was recovering from her accident. Her paintings, mostly self-portraits and still life, were deliberately naïve, and filled with the colors and forms of Mexican folk art. At 22 she married the famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, they were married for 20 years.Their stormy, passionate relationship survived infidelities, the pressures of careers, divorce, remarriage, Frida's bi-sexual affairs, her poor health and her inability to have children. Frida once said:"I suffered two grave accidents in my life…One in which a streetcar knocked me down and the other was Diego." Frida Kahlo has many famous paintings and most of those of here famous paintings were the self portraits that expressed all the pain that she went through in her life time.

During her lifetime, Frida created some 200 paintings, drawings and sketches related to her experiences in life, physical and emotional pain and her turbulent relationship with Diego. She produced 143 paintings, 55 of which are self-portraits. When asked why she painted so many self-portraits, Frida replied: "Because I am so often alone....because I am the subject I know best." Today, more than half a century after her death, her paintings fetch more money than any other female artist. A visit to the Museo Frida Kahlo is like taking a step back in time.

S.Kabangai Q2 Art project

Posted by Samuel Kabangai in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 9:09 pm
Artist Statement
Why you did what you did? What does it mean to you? What did you use to make it.

Hi my name is Samuel Kabangai, i attend school at Science Leadership Academy, i am the artist that created this design. For our second quarter project, we the students had a choice to pick our own art that we wanted to work on and a project that meant something to us.

I wanted the project that I choose to mean something and represent a part of me that I am proud of. I was born and raised in Sierra Leone west Africa and my African heritage is something that I am very proud of. Another thing that influenced my art was my name. I have a unique last name and all my friends and people i know have different ways to say my name. One of my friends Devonte Martin told me that my name can be a trade mark. The art that I decide to make is custom made shirts that had hand made drawings and different designs of the map of Africa and my name. I am a person that loves fashion and so I decided to put these designs on t-shirts that I can wear and so could other people.

The tools that I used to make my shirts  were things that can be used or acceded by anyone and they are affordable by anyone. During the process of the project I got a lot of help from my art teacher Ms. Hall. After I drew the designs of the shirts on paper, I used a box cutter to cut out the outline of what I had drew so it can look like the way I wanted it on the shirts. After I drew the design on paper, I traced it on shelfing paper and cut out the the design that I wanted to show on the shirt. After this process, I used a paint brush, dipped it in fabric paint and slightly tapped the paint on the out line of my design, while it was on the shirt.

These shirts that I have made and the ones I am going to make mean a lot to me because it was an idea that I had, a design that I made and it had a theme that I was proud of and I followed it and made the art. I am happy to see the reactions on peoples faces when they see the shirts and I am happy to see people wear the shirts. I hope this idea gets bigger and greater. More designs, art work and t-shirts and coming soon.

Samuel Kabangai- William C. Longstreth

Samuel Kabangai

Hi, for our history and english project, we had to pick a building in our neighborhood that is named after some and do research on the person and the building.
I like this project a lot and through this project i got to really know new information about my neighborhood that I will always remember.
I researched the elementary school i went to, William C. Longstreth School that is right down the street from my house.I was amazed on the information that i found out about my neighborhood and information i found out about the Longstreth family. I can proudly say that, through this project I know a little bit about my neighborhood that many people that have lived here longer than me don't know, and i will be proud and happy to tell them what I have learned. I hope this project that I have done marks the first step of my goal.

Samuel Kabangai; Period one Art project

Posted by Samuel Kabangai in Advanced Art - Hull on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 7:55 am

Hello my name is Samuel Kabangai, I am a junior at Science Leadership Academy.  Our quarter one benchmark we had to take something that we see everyday and transform it into a work of art.

For my project I had different ideas that i wanted to peruse that will make a statement. I decided to make a T.V out of a card board box. I made the T.V by butting out a select from portion of the box and replacing with recycle white paper. It works through the reflection of light, I used candles to make a light behind the box and i used cut of figures that i made from card board the reflect through the back of the T.V.

The inspiration for this project came through when i saw that in our school, we had many boxes that were lying around and there was no use for it and when i saw trash in the schuylkill river and majority of the trash was cardboard boxes. I though to myself that, we are informed about everything that goes on in our life today mostly through the T.V and its amazing how little things like recycling was be ignored by our society. The project was clever and unique and if someone see's it they will always remember it and maybe that will make them remember to recycle.

To make this art work i only need a cardboard box, box cutter, glue, paper and candles. The turn out of the project to me was great and i will love to build on that idea more and make it better. A future consideration will be to decorate the art work and give it a sort of spunk that will catch attention and leave a memory in anyones mind.

Bottle Cap Recycle Project

For our bottle cap recycle project, i made a poster that showed a image of an bottle pouring in the water and the cap of the bottle was falling and on the image of the water it showed a fist eating the bottle cap. That idea came to me when my art teacher informed me that they bottle cap from our bottle drinks are not being recycled, but instead they were being thrown in the ocean and animals/food like fish were eating the bottle caps. It came to my knowledge that those fish were dying or if they don't die they are cough and people eat those fish that have these chemicals from the bottle caps in them.
