Element Print Project 2011

Posted by Amanda Cartagena in Art - 9 - Hull on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 11:00 am

My element is Magnesium. Things that my element is used for is medicine. The way that I came up with the idea for my print was that since I knew it is used in medicine I decided to make a medicine container and little pills aside of it. The steps that I took with the idea of my print was that in one sketch I made a medicine container and another was magnesium crystals, then I put them together. I think that I did pretty well in which the way I organized the way I wanted it. The way I would make it differently if I did it again is that I will maybe find another way I could’ve drawn the items in which contains magnesium.

Element Print Project 2011

Posted by Shanayia Roland in Art - 9 - Hull on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 11:00 am

The element I was assigned was Rhodium. Some of the things that my element is used for are jewelry,  it is used to make electrical contact and used as an alloyed. I came up with the idea for my print because my element is used for jewelry so I decided to make a person wearing jewelry. I took the idea of  putting the atomic number on the shoulders on my drawn person. My thoughts about this project is that it is very fun but you have to be very careful while doing this project. If I did this project again I would make sure that I carve deeper when I make my plate.

My Print!

Posted by Anonymous in Art - 9 - Hull on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 10:54 am

Good gosh this took a while...

So this is the project that my class and I were doing from the month of April to the end of the school year. The project started off when we finished Negative Space Drawing. We were asked to sketch out a design for an element for an artistic periodic table of the elements. My element was number 55, Cesium. I chose the sun and blue background sky because Cesium is Latin for 'Sky Blue'. Once we had the sketch done, we were to re-sketch the design on a thin piece of tracing paper Once that was done, we retraced the design backwards on a Linoleum Tile. From there, we carved out the design on the block using a cutting handle, specifying what will be our negative or positive space from what we cut out from the block. Once that was done, we moved on to printing the design onto printing paper. The procedure was putting the paint on the table and using a roller to get some of the paint onto the block. We rolled the paint onto the block until every spot was filled in with the paint. We then took the block and pressed it on the print paper. After a few minutes of pressing, the print was printed.

This print was probably one of my best because there aren't many stray spots. The picture is easily distinguishable, compared to my other 3 pictures, and it sets a sort of calming mood. I enjoyed finishing this project, and I hope that the freshmen next year will share my enjoyment.

Element Print Project 2011

Posted by Imani Rothwell in Art - 9 - Hull on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 10:48 am

My element is sliver
It is used for jewelry  making  food utensils and conducting energy
When I found out that my element was the best conductor of electricity Benjamin Franklin with the whole key idea popped in my head and i thought to use that
I first drew my idea then 3 others to see which was the best. After that I drew my project on tracing paper then traced the tracing paper on a clay board. Last I painted over the board and pressed art paper on the paint so it can come out looking like print art work.
I think the project was a cool project. It was different and something I enjoyed doing. I must say it was also hard since I am a beginner at this.
I would draw I different idea so that my understanding of the element would be much clear.

Element Print Project 2011

Posted by Vannary Kom in Art - 9 - Hull on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at 10:52 pm

The element that was given to me was Copper. Copper is a red-brown metal, the chemical element of atomic number 29. It's used in cellphones, homes computers, jewelries, coinage, etc. Coppers are also a good conductive of heat and electricity.

This project was the same as "negative space drawing." Negative space is a space around a subject of an mage. This part of the drawing is usually neglected, or filled with scribbles. Negative space involves with concentrating on shading in the background and leaving the object white.

As for this art Printmaking project, I chose to draw a coin with with an atomic number, mass and boiling point of the element of copper and placed it inside and around the coin area. Coinage is made out of copper and I thought it would be fairly easy to use this as my printmaking project. There were many mistakes going on when carving the block. I accidentally carved the block way too deep which makes it seems rusty. The atomic numbers, mass numbers, and boiling point numbers did not really showed up. Only the the symbol (Cu) of the element did. When it comes to carving, I only carved the inside of the numbers, the coin, and leave the negative space as it is on the block.

I would have used other bright colors to bring out the drawing, but since copper has the color silver in it's product, I just wanted the color of the background to go with the element. There have been a lot of mistakes, but if  I could go back to redo it, I would definitely try to be careful with the cravings.

Print making

Helen Kilmartin

I did fire because when my element (vanadium) is crushed up it is flammable, not in its normal state though. I didn't do red as my print color because i thought that would be too normal, so i chose colors that popped out and looked different on fire. I chose that font because just like fire, that font is curvy but has a sharp end. I chose this one out of the other pictures because it looked like it would turn out neat, and indeed it did.

Negative Space Drawing.

Posted by Vannary Kom in Art - 9 - Hull on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 9:47 pm

A. Negative space is a space around a subject of an image. The Negative space does not occupied the area of the image. This part of the drawing is usually neglected, or filled with scribbles. Negative space involves with concentrating on shading in the background and leaving the object white.

B.
In the cutouts, the negative space changes around on the paper. [Black] is the negative space. [White] is the object of the drawing. From the first drawing, you can already tell it's a normal drawing picture. There isn't a negative space that's being added onto the drawing.
The second and third drawings shows negative space. The backgrounds are shaded in while the objects are not shaded in...it's just white.

C. It helps an artist to see the balance between light and dark and how objects are put together.

D. Yes, it does enhance the drawings because you can see an object as what it is but when you try and draw the object in front of you, you need to look at the space around the object and focus more on individual lines and segments of it instead of the whole thing.

Negatives, RSHAW

Posted by Ryan Shaw in Art - 9 - Hull on Monday, April 25, 2011 at 11:45 am

A. Negative space is drawing what there isn't. for instance, if drawing a pen in negative space, then you draw the space around the pen, not the pen itself.
B. I found negatives in the cut-out by cutting out the shapes in one paper, then pasting the opposite color on the opposite colored paper. In the drawing, I found that drawing the outline of the stool, then shading the areas outside of the lines worked well.
C. It helps an artist to look at negative space drawing because it helps them notice things that they didn't notice before.

A) I think negative space helps artists identify the back ground from the foreground, and think of them as separate things instead of one picture.
B) 1. In the cutouts, the negative spaces color changed. 2. In the stool drawing i made the foreground positive and the background negative.
C) It helps because you can think of the drawing as two layers.
D) Yes, since it gives the artist a better understanding of foreground and background.

NEGATIVE SPACE

Posted by Khari Evans in Art - 9 - Hull on Monday, April 25, 2011 at 11:03 am

A. Negative space is when you draw the space around a object instead of the object itself.
B. 1)I found negative space in my cut out by cutting out the spaces around the spaces that made up my picture. 2) I found negative space in my stool drawing by drawing the space around the stools from my view.
C. A artist needs to see negative space because, it shows them how things work together.
D. Yes, because it help you with perspective and spacing.
