Amanda Cartagena- Capstone

Posted by Amanda Cartagena in Capstone - Ames - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 10:50 pm

Throughout my four years at SLA I've learned a lot about diversity. SLA is a great example for a diverse community. The students and faculty at SLA come from many different backgrounds and still manage to come together and share the same building as a whole. For my capstone, my partner and I had decided that we wanted to give SLA something that reflected our diverse community. In result we painted a huge mural on the 2nd floor ballroom. This colorful painting basically reflects the meaning of diversity.

CodFish Salad

Posted by Amanda Cartagena in Science and Society - Best - E on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at 9:39 am

In this unit I've learned that most of the food isn't as healthy for us as we think it is. I personally see that the biggest problems with our food system is that the labeling on food doesn't provide everything that we need to know. The labels lack information for the people buying the food. Some changes that I would make to my food choices is being aware of the labeling on my food and reading what exactly is in my food. The impact of these changes would be changing my whole food system around. Yes, I am willing to make these changes.

Cod Fish Salad Recipe

Ingredients:

1 Avocado

1 16.oz bag of boneless cod fish (buena ventura)

1 onion

1 tomato

1/4 cup of corn oil

Directions:

Take a medium sized pot and fill it half way with water.

Place the cod fish in the pot and leave it in until the water starts boiling.

Once the water is boiled drain the water from the pot.

Repeat this process two more times.

Once you have done this process three times start cutting the avocado, tomato, and onion into small cubes.

After this process, rinse your hands and with your hands start breaking the cod fish into small pieces.

Finally, you can take a bowl and place everything in there and just mix it up. Don't forget to add the 1/4 cup of oil to add a final taste.

Background:

The ingredients were originated in Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, South Asia, North America, and Canada.

Everything I purchased came to a total of $10. This dish is meant to serve multiple people.

Process Paper: School district Closing

Posted by Amanda Cartagena in English 3 - Pahomov on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 8:43 am

My group’s topic was about the Philadelphia School District closing down Philadelphia public schools in order to save money. When we were given our topic we had to decide what audience we wanted to target, so we decided to target students since they were mainly the people being affected by the school closings. Once we had our audience that we were targeting we then had to choose how we wanted to get the word out and aware people of what was going on. As a group we split up what was going to be done, Tamatha was making a YouTube video, Jamekea was making a FaceBook page, Roger and I made a website.

As a group we wanted to show students what the purpose of our campaign was about and how it was going to be established. Each day in class we set out goals about what was going to be needed by the end of the day. On Monday March 18, 2013, we wanted our campaign’s project to be done so we made sure that the YouTube video was done, the FaceBook page was made, and the website had all of the information needed for the audience to understand what we were trying to establish and help them understand.

On our website’s front page we wanted the audience to know what we were proposing in our campaign, the problem that was occurring, and what our campaign was about. We then wanted to give the audience information about what the main reason was that the school district was closing down schools. We showed our gallery of of video from news channels where they talked about what was going on in the Philadelphia School District and how students, teachers, and parents felt about the change that was occurring. Last but not least we represented our sources of our information that was provided. As  a group we worked hard to establish information and how we were going to get the word out about our campaign to students, this way they’ll be aware of what ways they can help save their school from being such down such as fundraising, parents helping out, and much more.

Annotated Bibliography

Shah, Anup. "Causes Of Poverty." , 07 Jan. 2013. Web. 13 Feb. 2013.

This source explains the background and reasons for why many people are in poverty. This source shows statistics of children living in poverty, and how many is being spent on useless things other than things that are badly needed. This makes a broad understanding to why many people are in poverty due to bad decision making. People have different opinions and thoughts to why people are in poverty but everyone has a different reason for that, therefore no one really knows the reason why poverty was led in this way.

http://www.globalissues.org/issue/2/causes-of-poverty

. "Income, Poverty and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2010." , 13 Sep 2011. Web. 14 Feb. 2013.

The Census Bureau stated the amount of people in poverty by race and origin, and the difference between between 2009 and 2010. This may show how people were wealthy and over a year end up in poverty. The reason why this issue may have become this way may be because of different reasons, mainly because of decisions. The main influence on this problem and it's future would be to help these people in poverty to get back on their feet and make the right choices that aren't going to lead them back into poverty, but to have a better outcome for their lives.

http://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/income_wealth/cb11-157.html

Gamble, I. "World Neighbors Finds Solutions to the Root Causes of Poverty." , Web. 14 Feb 2013.

This source explains what poverty is, and how poverty affects people and their daily lives. People who are living in poverty can't afford food which makes them lack from nutrition in their system. The reason why this source helps out the reasons of poverty is because it explains thoroughly what people go through when in poverty and how they can't make decisions that others have opportunities of, they have to live and sacrifice with what they have. People in working neighbors work to find solutions to help improve the causes of the people in poverty.

Holmes, Jamie. "Why Can’t More Poor People Escape Poverty?." , 06 Jun 2011. Web. 13 Feb 2013.

This source explains how poverty is described to be a decision making control of people. People have a hard time deciding what choices that they'd rather choose which leads them in the wrong paths leaving most of them in poverty if they have no support. Statistics and evidence prove that poverty makes it even harder for people to escape it. Many people in poverty have a hard time dealing with money, making wrong decisions because they don't have the same wealth as others do.

Cartagena, Amanda. "Interviewed Chelsea Dawn." , 13 Feb 2013. Web. 13 Feb 2013.

I interviewed Mrs. Dawn from the W.I.C office over the phone and I asked her questions about people in poverty. The main question I had for her was "Why do you think people in poverty have a hard time making decisions?", she replied "People in poverty have a hard time making decisions because they don't exactly know what they want, almost as if they don't set goals out for themselves which is why they have a hard time leaving poverty." As she explained thoroughly it helped me have a better understanding to why so many people are in poverty because of decisions that they make.

Amanda Cartagena- iPad

Posted by Amanda Cartagena in Physics - Echols on Friday, November 16, 2012 at 9:33 pm
The reason why I chose this project is because since i'm always on my iPad I decided to make a replica of it made out of cardboard. I wanted the circuit to work when you pressed the button, just like a iPad will turn on when you pressed the home button. My replica was just a bigger model of a iPad, it has one series with three light bulbs running off of a 9voltage battery, and since we needed a on and off switch I chose the home button to be the on and off switch.

Humanities Portfolio 2012

Posted by Amanda Cartagena in English 2 - Block on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at 11:46 pm

In the beginning of this school year we started exploring different things in english and history class. We started off with little things that led into bigger ideas. As day by day passed we completed many assignments giving us ideas of many things, which will all come together into this portfolio. All this led to giving me a better understanding of the world revolving around us. Leaving it all to two general understandings, creativity and challenges during this whole school year.

Creativity played a big role in this school year. I learned that creativity allows a person to show many expressions of different perspectives. Towards the end of the year we had a special guest come to our classroom, her name was Leah Stein. She showed us how dancing can express and give a bigger meaning of many different things by watching dances and videos of her own. When we first started this project with Leah Stein we were taken to a building to have an idea on what our project was going to be based on. Afterwards we had to choose a site with our group to represent what her and her dance company do on a daily basis.“When we chose this site we started wondering around to see how we can make the whole space useful.” I found this project very difficult, but I was happy when it was over and done with.

Another project that we did during the year that had to do with creativity was our podcast. In our podcast we had to interview someone on what his or her personal boundaries were. In my podcast I interviewed my older cousin and when I asked her what a crossing boundary was to her she responded bullying as a major crossing boundary. “One big crossing boundary can be bullying, bullying can be identified as a person who uses strength or power to intimidate those who are weaker.” This assignment showed us how people have their own perspectives on crossing boundaries and how it show others a perspective they might not see crossing boundaries as.

Challenges showed me that if you put so much effort into it you will have the best feeling of accomplishment. Overcoming challenges makes someone feel accomplished. Throughout the whole year challenges came towards my way and I found many ways to have them accomplished for my goal towards the end of the year. During the beginning of history class we had an assignment on global education. This assignment gave me a broader idea on how lack of education remains a global problem. “I think lack of education remains such a global problem because of economy effects.” In my opinion this meant that due to many things occurring with the economy many children tend to lack education as if it meant nothing to them.

Another project that I created that represented challenges was the Young Playwrights play. It was presented to use by a woman named Kate, she gave this assignment to write a play on an global issues. Kate was a big help throughout this whole project, she always helped out with any feedback needed and gave ideas on improvement. “You must not worry about education. What you need to worry about is finishing that breakfast for your brother and I.” My play was called “The Life of an Indian Girl”, this play basically was a bout a young indian girl named Chandi. Chandi is just like any other indian girl living India who doesn’t have the opportunity of an education. She brags to her father about having an education but he refuses and tells her she must be like any other indian girl and be raised to be a house wife. WHile writing this play it showed me how we take things given to us for granted that other people wish they had the opportunity of. Also showed me how people take challenges to achieve what they’ve always wanted.

Pipeline Monologue Project

Posted by Amanda Cartagena in World History - Block on Monday, October 3, 2011 at 9:36 pm
The things that I wanted too show were different point of views of how the Keystone XL pipeline can affect people in different ways. Such as in my 3 monologues one was about a single woman not wanting the pipeline too go through home because she couldn't afford to pay for damages. Another was an environmentalist not wanting the pipeline because it was affecting the earth, and last but not least a rich stingy lady not caring where they put the pipeline as long as it wasn't near her home. These were all against the pipeline but from different perspectives.

Phone Rings,

Maria picks it up

Hello?

I am complaining about the Keystone XL pipeline.

My name?

Yes my name is Maria Lopez; I live in a small house with my two children and mother.

I have huge yard where I harvest vegetables and all sorts of crops. I have no job, which is why I depend on my crops that I harvest too sell too other people and too feed my family. I am complaining about the Keystone XL pipeline because they are trying to bring it through my yard, and if they bring it through my yard and a disaster occurs I would have no crops too sell or too feed my family. Since my house is in a deserted area we would have no help, meaning we will have too move somewhere further and leave our home. Which isn’t possible.

Man on the phone. Why can’t you leave your home?

Why can’t I leave my home? Well sir for starters I don’t have enough money to afford another home and my mother is too sick for us too move to another place.

Takes deep breathe.

Well that is all I have too say, but please before you decide too put this Keystone XL pipeline through my home think about my children, and what is going too happen too them, also think about my mother and what may happen too her. I don’t want them too suffer the consequences of this pipeline.

Thank you. Bye.

Hangs up phone.

Pulls out paper and pen and starts writing.

Dear, earth destroyers

Hi, my name is Susan Cooper I am an environmentalist.

I’m a single woman with no children. I live by myself in a condo, and the other day I was reading through the newspaper where I saw that Canada was trying too bring the Keystone XL pipeline through the U.S.

I am complaining about this because I don’t feel as though the environment should be endangered just because they want to save money and bring in more jobs.

Did you people forget that we are not the only things that live here? This isn’t cool and then you guys have guts too know that the pipeline can go through homes. Do you people think we can just grab our things and just migrate like nothing is going on?

Have some sense in yourselves, but I know one thing I’m not going too tolerate you guys destroyed the environment we live in. You people are destroying the earth, but when you people get the meaning through your heads then you will all thank me.

Until then you guys should be worrying about yourselves then ways to save money and destroying the earth.

Sincerely, Susan Cooper also known as tree hugger

Folds up letter and places it in envelope.

That out of teach them. Hmmm.

Pulls up face time on Iphone.

Lady speaks in British voice

Hello sir, my name is Lisa Anderson.

I am a rich, independent, hardworking woman.

I don’t depend on anybody for nothing except my maids, butler, and lawnmower. Their job is too have everything my way. I live in a 4-flour house.

I am complaining because these despicable people have sent me a letter warning me about the Keystone XL pipeline running around my home. Well let me warn you people about something if that pipe reaches anywhere near my home causing any sort of damage I will make sure every little penny is coming out of your pockets. Also making sure that you people buy me a whole knew house that tops this one. Because of course I wouldn’t want too live in a house that has been damaged. I don’t care if you people place this Keystone XL pipeline anywhere else as long as it isn’t anywhere near my home. I don’t want too have too repeat myself if not you people will have too face the consequences.

Well that is all I have too say today, thank you very much.

Cheerio.

Closes face time on Iphone.

Well now that, that is done, “ Carlos is my lawn mowed darling?”

Descriptive Essay ; The Damaged Picture

Posted by Amanda Cartagena in English 2 - Block on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at 1:42 pm

       Honesty plays many roles in life, therefore it is always good to be honest and not lie because you would be in the wrong position and have guilt in life. When you’re honest too someone you let out more relief. When you keep something from someone and they end up finding out it will be worse. Such as lets say if you were in an relationship and you hid something and lied about it and they find out afterwards it might lead to a break up, but if you’re honest they would be mad but at least they know they can trust you not too lie again.

        Such as in my scene 2 we weren’t honest about the situation nor did my grandfather found out “As we put it together we immediately hung it back on the wall. Leaving no appearance of damage we left it as if nothing had happened.” Even though sometimes you want to lie and not be honest because you don’t want to face the consequences you’re going to end having too anyways.

     My mother had this picture that might have been the only picture she had of her childhood. In the picture it shows her as a young girl with dark blondish hair cut short with a light dress, and a background of nature behind her. It was like a paper picture type connected to and old light wooden piece with damps of dark wood printed on certain spots.

       One day my brother and I were playing with water and throwing it at each other, the picture was placed on the table because the nail it was placed on wasn’t stable. We had forgot that the picture was placed there, so as we were throwing water around not remembering by accident a whole cup of water had spilled on the picture. As my brother and I took a quick glance at the picture I saw as the water started to make the left corner of the picture to tear off. I had gotten so scared because the picture had meant a lot too my mom, a gift from her grandmother before she had died. My brother and I had gotten so scared we quickly hid the picture, my mom had gotten home looking for the picture me and my brother had gotten so frightened. But I knew I would have too face the consequences afterwards if she found it so I came and told her by accident a cup of water spilled on it so I had put it away so that way it can dry up.

So I had brought the picture out and gave it to her as she quickly tried to fix it. I knew that if I didn’t tell her she would be really upset, and when I told her I felt so relieved. I didn’t have to face the consequences if she had found it. By the look of her face I can see the redness appeal coming out, but as it started too fade she just gave me and my brother a glance nodding her head and quickly drying the picture up and putting it away. As she talking walking away “ Yous are lucky you told me this now or not you guys would’ve been punished for trying to hide it”. I quickly inhaled a breathe, thinking in my head “WHEW”, I had felt relieved, as my brother looked at me with a scared suspicious look on his face immediately walking away from the table.

            As my mom came back she had looked upset because there was nothing she could’ve really had done because we had already fixed the situation. She sat and starting talking to me about how much that picture meant too her, as I started too tell her it was an accident and what had happened my brother came rushing in the conversation telling his part. I quickly interrupted him because I wasn’t to honest too my mom about the situation, she just said what is done is done. My brother and I just walked away as i pushed him up the steps before he had made the situation worse then it was.

Element Print Project 2011

Posted by Amanda Cartagena in Art - 9 - Hull on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 11:00 am
My element is Magnesium. Things that my element is used for is medicine. The way that I came up with the idea for my print was that since I knew it is used in medicine I decided to make a medicine container and little pills aside of it. The steps that I took with the idea of my print was that in one sketch I made a medicine container and another was magnesium crystals, then I put them together. I think that I did pretty well in which the way I organized the way I wanted it. The way I would make it differently if I did it again is that I will maybe find another way I could’ve drawn the items in which contains magnesium.

Perspective drawing

Posted by Amanda Cartagena in Art - 9 - Hull on Monday, April 4, 2011 at 11:47 am
We started drawing a horizon line, then making a vanishing point.Then using horizontal, verticle, and orthagonal lines making boxes connecting to the vanishing point (making sure it was from a worm's and bird's eye ) After we learned how to do that we started using this process to start making our room.

The part that was easy to learn was making the 3 dimensional boxes then when going to the room the ceiling and windows were also easy.

The part that was hard to learn was when we were making or rooms was trying to even out the walls with everything towards the vanishing point.

An artist from my class that I think basically completed the assignment well was:

http://www.scienceleadership.org/blog/Perspective:3 - Lexy

Even though she didn't really finish she still did a good job making sure that everything evened out with the vanishing point. Especially the walls her lines were very straight and the way she drew her windows really brought out her picture.

Telling weather in spanish

Posted by Amanda Cartagena in Spanish 1 - Sanchez on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 11:27 am
¿Qué Tiempo hace?= What’s the weather like?

How to answer that question

Hace (mucho) frío, calor, viento, sol, fresco= It’s (very) cold, hot, windy, sunny, cool.

To say raining you will say

Está lloviendo/ Llueve=  It’s raining/ It rain

To say it’s snowing you will say

Está nevando/ Nieva= It’s snowing/ It snows

To say Its cloudy you will say

Está nublado

When, Where, and How you will use this

When- you will use it when someone or if you want to ask someone the whether

How- You will use it in a proper tone because it’s a question

Where- you can use this any where

Examples

(Hoy means today and Manana means tommorow)

Elderly women ask- Que Tiempo hace hoy en filadelphia

You: Hoy hace viento or Hace viento

Sister ask- Que tiempo hace manana?

You: Manana hace fresco

The reason you will just say manana because manana means tommorow, so you will say hace.

You can use this anywhere.

For example if you want to ask your mom for the weather for school.

Telling Time

Posted by Amanda Cartagena in Spanish 1 - Sanchez on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at 8:31 pm
How to ask a stranger/person for the time

First thing first you need to know your numbers up to 59

1-10 is

uno=1
dos=2
tres=3
cuatro=4
cinco=5
seis=6
siete=7
ocho=8
nueve=9
diez=10
now from here up to fifteen get’s different when you prounce these make sure you say the ce
once=11
doce=12
trece=13
Catorce=14
Quince=15
Now from here it gets fairly easy. When you say 16-19 it will be dieci then a number. For example
Dieciseis=16
Diecisiete=17
Dieciocho=18
Decinueve=19
You say how knowing your number 1-10 is important.  Also how when say a number 1-16 it will be deci and not diez

Now when you want to say 20-29 it the same as 16-19

20= veinte
21+ veintiuno
22= veintidos
23 veintitres
25= veinticinco
26= veintiseis
27= veintisiete
28= veintiocho
29= veintinueve

Next 30-59 is diffent from 16-29 instead of putting the number together you will add a y…

30= Treinta,
31= Treinta y uno
32= Treinta y dos
33= Treinta y tres
34= Treinta y cuatro
35= Treinta y Cinco
36= Treinta y seis
37= Treinta y siete
38= Treinta y ocho
39= Treinta y nueve
That will be the same for 40 and 50 but instead of Treinta fo 40 it will be Cuarenta and 50 will be Cincuenta

Now you know your numbers up to 59 telling and asking for the time will be so easy.

How to ask for time- ¿(A) Qué hora es? Or  ¿(A) ¿ Qué  hora son? Or ¿(A) Qué hora tiene/

To repode( respond)
Es la una= 1 o clock Only
 The rest will be Son las…
Uno
Dos
Tres
Cuatro
Cinco
Seis
Siete
Ocho
Nueve
Diez
Once
Doce
 Next ….y cuarto means :15 so if you want to say the time is say for example 6:15 you will say  Son Las Seis y cuatro or say you want tos ay the time is 7: 30 you will say Son Las Siete y media. Say you want tos ay for example the time is 8:39 you will say  Son Las Ocho y Treinta y nueve
You see how knowing your Lumber 1-59 play a big part.

But if you want tos ay any time between 45-59 you will use menos( number of minutes befote the hour) So if you will say  for 9:45 Son Las menos cuatro and  cuatro in time means 15.

You will use this to ask people/ or if people ask you what’s the time. You can use this any where during any time of the day.

Situation for this will be asking a person on street the time

Script-

You: Pornada (excsue me)

Person: si(yes)

You: Que´ hora es?

Person: Es la una y media

You: gracias.
