Food Slide

Logan, jackfruit, tapioca dice and tapioca pearls with coconut milk

Serves 10-15

Cooking time: Approximately 1 hour

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of fresh logan fruit
  • 2 cups of fresh jackfruit
  • 1 cup of tapioca pearls
  • 7 oz of tapioca dice
  • 3-5 cans cans of coconut milk
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • Salt

Tools:

  • 2 sauce pans
  • Cooking strainer
  • Utensil for stirring

Directions

Fruits:

  • Peel off the logan and jackfruit from the shells and remove the seeds (I bought the fruits from cans)
  • Thinly slice the jackfruit
  • Slice logan into halves (optional)

  Tapioca dice and pearls

  • Bring water to a pan and add the water halfway to the pan
  • Let the water boil before adding in the tapioca
  • Add tapioca in water for approximately 10 minutes or wait until the tapioca turns clear
  • Make sure to stir the tapioca so it won't stick to the pan

Coconut milk sauce

  •  Bring a saucepan to boil and add water 1/2 way to the pan
  • Let it sit until boiled
  • Add 1/4 cup of salt
  • Add the in the coconut milk
  • Gradually add 3 cups of sugar and stir the sauce

Analysis:
This is a Cambodian/Asian traditional dessert. Cambodian typically make this dessert for special occasions like Cambodian New Year or whenever you have a family gathering. You can easily find similar desserts to this one anywhere in a Cambodian local grocery store or at a Chinese/Vietnamese supermarket. This dessert takes approximately an hour to cook.

Health - Although there are fruits included in this dessert, it is not the most healthiest dessert as you originally thought. After making this dessert, I realized it was high in calories due to the amount of sugar it has been added into the coconut milk sauce. Also, the logan, jackfruit and coconut milk was from a can, so they are most likely to be considered as processed. Since the fruits are from cans there are syrup and more sugar added to the fruits in can to make it not go rotten.
Environment - Food cans are made for "connivence" purposes. If people want tomato sauce they would  most likely buy the tomato sauce that were already made and distribute into a jar and/or can rather than making the tomato sauce from scratch. Food cans are convenient and it is easier to open up the can and throw in the pan, but what most people don't think about is the ingredients that are in those cans.
Economic - Most of the ingredients were from cans and bags. This dessert cost me about $13 to make and it serves about 10-15 people. My family would eat this dessert for 3 days, but it isn't the healthiest choice to have this for dessert all the time. Most of my cans comes from an Asian factory and they would have made the money if anyone chooses to eat fruits from a can than buying fresh fruits.

Social -  I'd always thought processed food only have all these additives, preservatives and sugars, that your body just does not need. Ultimately, it seems that there are sauce and spread like ketchup, mayonnaise, and mustard are processed food because it wouldn't be ketchup, mayonnaise, or mustard if it didn't have any other ingredients in it the bottle.

It's always better to buy fresh fruits and make your own sauce or any other food paste from scratch. It is much healthier and they are all natural ingredients. You know what you are putting into what you are making, so it isn't preservatives. Homemade cooking and making things from scratch is a better option.

Reflection:

or this unit, I have learned a lot about things that I didn’t know in the past. Especially the importance of nutrition and the label of nutrition facts. The past two weeks into this unit, I noticed how much better I’ve been eating. As a teenager, I would eat what a typical teenager eat and that would be tons of “crap” food. Everyday, I tried to consume enough veggies and fruits. When we watched a short documentation in class of why our food could contain either a corn or soybean ingredient or both, that has opened my eyes on a bigger scale. I rarely eat red meat, but looking back to it I thought I would rather become a vegetarian.

Our food system is filled with unhealthy and bad choices and they come in cheaper prices. Fast food restaurants are everywhere near us. It is convenient, cheap and that is why people tend to turn to the bad choices. It really depends on how you want to eat. Eating healthy can be very expensive, but you really have to think about how much you can get out of buying a meal at a fast food restaurants to cooking your own meal at home. It is much better to cook your own food because you will know how much ingredients you are putting in your food and you can make more. If you’re going to McDonald all you can eat is a burger with fries and soda on the side, but with homemade cooking there are many other options.

I am willing to make these changes and I am currently owning up to it. One thing I have learned to become healthy is to eat less meat. That is not a problem to me. I don’t eat meat everyday or red meat meat as often. I typically have white meat over red meat. I believe if we can all cook at home and don’t eat out often, we can tackle obesity.

Writing makes me feel free, focused and blissful. It is my escape from reality, while also my touchstone to overcome what sometimes feels like too much reality. I write to connect with my emotions. My writing both feeds me and at times destroys me when I "fail" to achieve what I hope for in. Writing frees and nourishes my soul.

Obesity in Philadelphia (Vannary, Ethan, Aaron, Ayoola, and Teige)

Posted by Vannary Kom in English 3 - Pahomov on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 8:10 am

For my part of the project, I designed a brochure. The brochure were designed to reach out to the public, specifically the children’s parents and many other adults about childhood obesity. I demonstrated the brochure in a creative and informative key factors of obesity. The brochure advertises ways that can risk the chance of children’s becoming obesity in their early age and resources that can inform the public (parents and adults) to take part in their children’s and/or kids to live in a better and healthier lifestyles. I included a short general background information about childhood obesity, the causes of obesity, prevention tips, treatment/solutions, and a public program in Philadelphia that children’s can get involved to stay active and learn about nutrition values. The effectiveness of this will be determined by the amount of people; teachers and students who catches the attention by the brochure in the hallways. More importantly, since Ms. Martin is now teaching her health classes about fitness and nutritions, I decided to reach out to her and ask if she can share the brochure to her students.

Overall, the process of this project went very well. Every person in the group knew their roles and what they needed to do in order to complete the project. Ethan came up with the idea of creating a tee-shirt with a candy bar in the front side of the shirt that says "Obesity" and along with the nutrition fact label on the back of the shirt. Aaron decided to produced his own song about obesity, and his part in the process was surprisingly impressive to me. Ayoola and Teige were the only ones who I was worried about the most. They switches their idea about the website many times and I was worried that it wouldn’t be completed on time. Eventually they did finished. Overall, the process of the project was very good and well done. My strength and weaknesses has reached upon my weariness. My weaknesses about group projects were communications. Although we had some lack of communication, everyone did what they were supposed to do.

Annotations: The gas prices in Philadelphia has always been one of the biggest issues and is still currently is in Philadelphia’s economy. The gas prices has been rising and decreasing over the past few years, but the gas prices today seems to hit many of Philadelphia residents drastically from the increasing of 46 cents per gallon in the last two months of 2013 -- leaving the highest gas price in the four-dollars range. Other than that, the problem in Washington has focused on the supply. According to the Fox Philly news article, “There were more protests over the weekend in front of the White House over building the Keystone oil pipeline from Canada. Environmentalists are concerned about possible spills.” Because of the Keystone oil pipeline from Canada, the environmentalists are concerned about the cause in the increasing gas prices and this may come from the oil spills.

Interviewed an Economist in Philadelphia named Judy Rivas. I interviewed her over the phone and asked her few questions about the current economy issues in Philadelphia. Judy stated that the economy in Philadelphia and everywhere else in the country is not financially sustainable. Money is the largest impact that has corrupted and turned the economy for its worst. Jobs, (unemployment/employment), healthcare plans, close down businesses, the cost of gases and tolls, school budgets and fundings, social programs has depended on money for its enrichments in the economy.

Humanities Portfolio 2012

Posted by Vannary Kom in English 2 - Block on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 10:31 am

Throughout the year in English/History I have learned and experienced through many different and disputable topics. On the very first day as I entered through Mr. Block’s classroom and as several weeks gone by, I was still uncertain about the expectations in his classroom. Later in the year, at some point there were times when things had came to mind on many controversial lessons that was taught in class, and I have always questioned myself because of these classes. How are these units that we are covering in class going to have an impact on me? In many substantial ways, it did had an impact on me and I was struck by it, especially through written essays, the poem studies unit, as well as The Art in the Open Festival, and all of these controversial topics has lead me to the general understandings of struggles, challenges, and hard work.

One of the greatest understandings that I have experienced and learned from was Struggles, and all of the struggles that I had gone through was told through written essays that were assigned in class. In English class, we are often given a writing assignment on a topic that addresses to our ability of understandings in the storyline of a book, which can also correlate to our own life, or a written  essay of a reflection from our past experiences that we struggled through in which can be learned from when is expressed through writing. At the beginning of this year, the very first day of school, Mr. Block assigned us a “One page” paper that night where can just write about anything; your intentional thoughts, current situations, life, anything that you want to put down in that one page, and the next day in class, we would have to gather around in a circle to share out a part of out one page story. The start of this assignment started out as, “The instructor said Go home and write A page tonight. And let that page come out of you --- Then, it will be true.”  Before Mr. Block gave us the writing time in class to get a head start on this one page assignment, I thought it was going to be easy since it was only a page of a writing. I though I could write this paper and get it done in less than twenty-minutes, but as writing time as come, I struggled through the writing time we had in class and several hours at home as I tried to think of what I wanted to write down for this one page. I came to an idea after several hours later thinking in mind, “This is my sophomore year, I am in a new stream, I will be in a same classroom with different faces that I have not met nor worked with last year, I am in a new learning environment, and with a different teacher who will be instructing me for the year.” This gave me an idea of wanting people to know a little more about me. I started this paper off as a basic intro, then worked my way through the life in crisis which was such a hassle for me to go through. Sharing was one of my biggest struggles in the beginning of the year. I can confidently say that the struggles had impacted on me from wanting to share my stories, but one of the greatest release from those struggles were having some feedbacks from people in the classroom, and feeling good about expressing what I wrote, which made me had more confidence to have my voice be heard. The only reason that held me back from speaking up was the thought of judging from people’s opinions, but those were the main reasons from how I managed to break out from my own little bubble and had more confidence to share out some my own thoughts.

Another general understandings that I experienced and learned from was challenges and hard work. As I already said before, the topics that was taught in Mr. Blocks class are controversial, which made some of the assignments difficult and challenging for me. There was one project that I had a very hard time with was the project to The Revolution Guidebook. For the Revolution Guidebook, we had to design and create a guidebook that presents unique perspectives about revolutions in the world, it was more of a project as a creation of “Revolutions For Dummies,” in a slides/presentation format, and in a way to show our project, we would have to present it front of class along with a voting on the best project presenter to present again at a final round. It was one of the most challenging projects I did this year for History class. It took me several days to adjust the point of this project. Although it took me rigorous time to figure out the point and what to do for this project, I managed to put in all my efforts complete this project the way it’s supposed to be done.

Another example of a challenging process in English/History class was the dancing performance that was coordinated by Leah Stein group.  From the very first day ( when we started our first steps by introducing ourselves using our own movement that matches the syllables of our names, first workshop at the Amorine, and working our way towards to put together this dance performances, there were many expectations that I had in thought, that changed my mind into thinking that there are many other ways where you can possibly expressed yourself through dancing (freestyle) than just dancing in general. Working with many different objects to make sounds, using different techniques to express yourself in a way you want others to see, and many of things which makes your movements seems unique in other people perspectives. Before we started this whole process, I thought dancing was more like a technique where people would danced to or follow by the rhythm of a certain song; more like free-styling in some sort of ways, but it has changed my perspectives in many ways. The most challenging part of our Art in the Open performance was coming up with various techniques that we want to show the audience. I thought I couldn’t do the dance that my group came up with for the performance, but all it takes was practice. During the performance, I gave in and pour out all of the energetic power inside of me to my dances as the audience glides their eyes towards the performance, and it was the greatest success that I was very proud of al wished to go back to the beginning and start over at the very first step.

This year has been one of the most struggles and challenging for me, but all of these determination to hard work has been the greatest success for me. I would also like to thank Mr. Block for teaching and showing me an open door to my comfort zone in sharing, as well as speaking up, and the experienced from classroom in which I have learned more from. this one one of the greatest learning experiences and I will never doubt any of the works I have done, hard work pays off.

History Journal #20 - Social Change
Why is social change sometimes fast and sometimes slow?

Fast- For social change to be fast, you would have to be connected to society in a way to have the ability to critique in fast social change.

Examples: Occupying the wall street (People wants to be able to have their voice be heard and fight for their rights in terms of society.)

Also, any type of career you're interested in or major in is FAST in social change.

Slow-
- People are often afraid to be judged by others.
- Doesn't bother with things that are revolved around them.
- Equal rights.
- Costs.

English Journal #36 - I Wish I Could...

I wish I could be more confident. I wish I could be tall. I wish I could have the pear shape of a runway
pageant than feeling self conscious in this apple shape of mine. I wish I could run five-miles. I wish I could eat anything and never have to worry about calories. I wish I could major in both cosmetology and nursing. I wish I could get straight A's. I wish I could be more outgoing, than being so socially awkward. I wish I could find my voice. I wish I could be more opened. I wish I could stop the feelings for this one person. I wish I could have the eager to talk to the people I don't not intentionally talked to anymore. I wish I could go back and change all of the mistakes I've done. I wish I could stop dwelling on the past. I wish I could see the world in such beauty than darkness. I wish I could pain my nails neatly. I wish I could be more stylish in beauty. I wish I could make videos like those Beauty guru's on Youtube. I wish I could shop everyday. I wish I could easily blog and not have a hard time thinking about what to write. I wish I could succeed in both cosmetology and nursing. I wish I could succeed later in life and have the perfect life that I imagined.

For this project, Mr. Block told us to interview someone that are particularly outside of school for 45 minutes and told us to put together and finalise the interview with at least 8-10 minutes.

For my interview, I interviewed my mom and she had many stories to tell us about the time her and her family had struggled during her childhood years and the hassle of transitioning from a country to another country.

Language Autobiography

Posted by Vannary Kom in English 2 - Block on Monday, January 9, 2012 at 10:52 pm
Introduction and Reflection:

When I heard we were going to be working on the Language Autobiography essay, I had a lot of thoughts in mind, since I know I had gone through many experiences with language identity and how it still has affects me in my life since I speak two languages. I can confidently say choosing a time where I had struggled the most was an easy step for me to begin my essay, but when I had got to the point into the story, it was difficult for me to narrow down and use some descriptions to tell the struggles I’ve been through. Overall, I felt great working on this essay, it’s a way of expressing myself through my language identity.

Language Autobiography Paper

Language identity has played in a big role part in my life, and I have gone through many experiences of how language identity has affected me in a way of speaking. I was put in ESOL and speech class for thoroughly nine years in Elementary school, and including the first year of high school. When I was younger, I’d never knew what ESOL class were for, I’d always thought it was a regular English class, not English learning class. I didn’t discovered that until I got to the age of twelve. Every morning or in the afternoon, a person would call for me and other English- learning students to go down to ESOL class. I still remember the moment of  being embarrassed from the time I stood up from my chair and had to walked all the way down to ESOL class, and it  felt as if my feelings were shuffling from the moment I was called to go down.

I was born in the U.S. and I speak two languages; Khmer and English. I was taught both languages at the same time, but I had incorporated Cambodian language more than English when I was younger. Ever since I started to developed my speaking, I was always told that my voice were tremendously deep and that I couldn’t talk right. Many people said it was probably because my tongue is big. I wasn’t really aware of that myself, I had always thought I spoke clearly until I heard my own voice from recording it. I was very aroused by the way I sounded,

“How could that possibly be me?” I asked myself.

When I listened to my own self talking in the video I recorded, I then knew what went wrong with the way I spoke, it was the “s” sounds. Each time I say a word that has the sound of an “s”, it would seem as if I had stuffed myself with a big wad of chemical cotton candy with braces hanging loose in my mouth.

I have a similar story to Amy Tan, “Mother Tongue” story. According to “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan she says, “My mother’s English is perfectly natural, it’s her tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, full of observation, and imagery. That was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed things, made sense of the world.”  Amy’s mother struggles with grammars, pronunciations, and people who would criticized of the way she speaks, and that relates to how I was when I was younger and had not yet developed in English language. I still have some trouble with that, but it isn’t as bad as it was then. Just like Amy’s perspective, I have always described my language identity as “broken” or “fractured” English.

One day a new student came two months after school started. This student came from Cambodia and didn’t know very much english. There were me and two other students in the class who is Cambodian, so we had to help and translate for him. One major problem is that the other two students doesn’t potentially speak our native language and I can’t necessarily translate from English to Khmer fluently. It was very confusing for the new student, but he could only understand if I said it word by word.

“ I don’t understand. You guys are Cambodian, you speak the same language, how can you not know how to translate to your fellow classmate that speaks the same language as you?”

My english teacher was concern. That was very embarrassing to me even though she said is to all three of us. I feel like I’m a very slow learner. I can understand my language, but I can’t speak fluently nor translate for someone else who knows the same language as I do. Well, that’s just how I developed my language. I can fully understand, but I can’t speak fluently in my own native language.

Throughout the years In elementary and middle school, I have not had the fully potential of confident to raised my during discussions or any other curriculum. I was always picked on by the teacher and feel embarrassed for not knowing the answers or sometimes I do know the answer, but I just don’t want to speak up. The only reason why that happened to me because I didn’t want my voice to be heard. That time I was more concernative and afraid about people opinions, and that they’ll judged me based on my opinions and the way I speak, but when I came to high school, it was a whole new world to me. I feel like I can express my feelings through language identity when I participate more in some classes and through many essays I’d written. Language identity is a way to express one main self.

Pipeline Monologue Project

Posted by Vannary Kom in World History - Block on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at 9:20 pm
The purpose of these monologues were to illustrate different point of views of the pros and cons about the Keystone XL Pipeline. Mr. Block had assigned 3 monologues and my point of view was from a Protestor, Police Officer, and a Farmer. These people will tell you what they think about the Keystone XL pipeline project.

Voice of a Protestor

From a long day at work, I sat down in my comfy couch and turned on the television to see what was on to watch. Flipping through channel to channel, the news had reported an impact and issues about the pipeline.  My name is Stephanie Zhu. I live in Canada and I am thoroughly against this pipeline situation. There are many reasons why I’m against Keystone XL pipeline.  Canada has been one of the biggest and most supplier of oil, exporting two millions barrels per day. United States has been using Canadian Tar Sands oil and the more oil that is being exported, the harder it is to find. The oil in Canada is made from Bitumen which is really expensive, and yet we have been receiving dirty and cheap stuff, which isn’t the best thing we could have here. This is where the protests had begun. I drove all the way from Canada to the White House to support the rest of the protestors about this pipeline tragedy. There were hundreds and thousands of people rising above one another outside the White House protesting about the KeyStone XL pipeline project. I was there too, and got arrested.

“Nothing isn’t going to change my mind, officer.”

I hesitated. I chose to be locked up. know it was illegal to protests outside the White House, but I was just trying to help others support this oil situation.
The officer pulled my hands together behind my back, handcuffed me, and threw me in the car.

Pipeline Point of View from Officer Berkle William

Hi, I’m Berkle William and I’m an officer who have yet involved in this protesting tragedy.

(Gripping his hands together as he speaks)

I’ve been out here all day arresting more than two hundreds people who has been standing outside of this White house protesting about the KeyStone XL Pipeline. I don’t get why these people are here trying to wait for Obama and other people in the White House to accept their words? Why here though? They’re making my job even harder. It’s even more difficult when I tried to convinced all the protestors to go back to their place. There were two options for them, two options for all the protestors to choose. Either vacate from this property or lock up. They all hesitated and decided to go for the jail house. I then realized this isn’t a game for them, they were all serious about this project. This is horrible. I have to come out here and handcuffs hundreds of people on something I am totally not against disagreeing about. There’s nothing that I can do about it. The president can’t just sit still and ignore this, he needs to do something about it. What’s even worse? Having to hear the protestors scream and yell all over the place. It’s like a nightmare. Hopefully, this tragedy will be situated. I’m tired from all this complaining. Please, do something about this.

(Hand motions gesturing; speaking in an aggressive tone)

Point of view from a Farmer Mary Jane

Hi, my name is Mary Jane and I’m a farmer of my own farmland in Zionsville, Canada.

There has been major issues occurring in the farmland for the past few months, and it relates to the Keystone XL pipeline. I didn’t know it was happening, but many companies had canceled their order from exporting my products. I was very concerned to why this is happening. From then on, I’ve been observing the farmland day by day, and there were just many crops and produce that weren’t in good condition. I find it really strange until I read the news paper and found out about the Keystone XL Pipeline project. I want this pipeline situation to stop. It can’t be happening. The chemical of cheap and dirty stuff from the pipeline is affecting the produce and the business . Not only that, but it affect the family. We have been working hard; sweating from our head to toes each day. I’m very disappointed  and it really upsets me when this had happened to our family farmland. If the business is down, I can’t afford to fix this. I wanted to know more about this Pipeline, so I then searched up on the internet to see some updates on this tragedy and how might this problem be solved

[Sits in her office desk in an aggressive mood and read through each pages of the Pipeline stories. ] [sighed in relief as she scrolled from pages to pages]

There must be a way out, but I have to get this problem situated or else the business will go out of luck.

                      Descriptive Essay

                   Burden of Memories

When you transfer to a new school, you usually feel stuck up. I had experience this twice. The time I had transferred to a new Elementary school and when I had entered high school. It’s pretty hectic when you’re at a new school. Its like you have to experience and go through the steps all over again.

“Ring Ring Ring!”  The sound of the alarm clock had screeched in my ears. I woke up with a devastated mood to turn it off. There I went, reaching for the door knob sighing in disbelief, “First day of school...” I walked into the washroom and stared in the mirror for several minutes. One litre of tears. I was unable to hold back the silent tears. It dripped silently down one cheek. I suddenly said to myself, “It shouldn’t be that bad. I’ll get through this first day.” I wiped off my tears and got dressed. Forty minutes later,  I went downstairs to put on my shoes. My dad came down and asked if I was ready. My mind went completely blanked. Dark clouds fell over me and I could hear voices screaming in my head.

“Hey! Are you ready to go to school?”

He asked again. I jumped and had woken up from an unusual nightmare I had pictured.

“Yes, I’m ready dad,”

I said nervously as I got up. Here I go again, turning the door knob. I opened the door and stepped out as the door had closed behind me. One block away till I reached my destination to a new learning environment.

I had transferred to a new Elementary school, entering fourth grade. I remember clearly standing in front of the classroom full of unknown faces on the first day. A lady with thick body, blonde highlights, with glasses came and introduced herself.

“Hi, I’m Mrs. Mesi and I will be your teacher for the year. Nice to meet you. Come in and introduce yourself to the class.”

I stepped in the classroom and stood beside my new teacher.  I stood there biting onto my lips as she told the students to quiet down. The room became dead silent. Now, all eyes on me. I stood there panicking. My chest felt like it was caving in with extreme discomfort and pain. I felt like I was receiving death stares from each person. I tried to speak up, but words kept blocking my mouth. Here I go again,

“Hi everyone...My name is Vannary.”

There, I said it. The whole class became severely dead. I was drenched in drips of boiling sweats. My teacher then escorted me to my seat. I sat with two boys in my tables who think they were tough enough to fit in the “hood.” I felt as if my back were against the wall. Everyone in class burst into rowdy laughters and joked around. I was extremely quiet. Blood started rushing through my veins causing inside of me a great pain. I was in my own little corner getting caught up in my own day dreams. Several days, weeks, months, and years later, I had gotten used to the school system. I knew more faces than I ever did when I first came to this school. I opened up to people and had became close to them. I felt more accepted than ever. By eighth grade, I had a group of friends who I considered as my “Best Friends.” They were always there for me through thick and thin.

By the end of eighth grade year, I had made a creative piece of art. I picked out this special hard cover piece of art that means a lot to me. There are colorful polka dots decorations on the front cover that reads, “Somewhere In Our Lifetimes” in rhinestone letters. Each pages inside consists full burden of memories. Flipping through  these pages each time brings back nostalgic memories. I always kept in a drawer, where no dust can ever land on the surface of this marvelous scrap book. This scrap book consists of black and white printed snapshots with written summaries. This symbolized the adventures my friends and I had explored and the memories we had captured. Every adventure we had, every snapshots we took. I did this to fill the pages with flashbacks of my friends and I and what we did in Elementary/Middle school. One of my favorite pictures would have to be a photo booth that was taken at the movie theater. There it was, five of us girls ganging up on each other to fit inside the minuscule seat at the photo booth section. One, two, three! SNAP! Capturing our foolish and horrendous faces as we tried so hard to stay in place and not burst into laughers. The pictures were something to look back at. Five of us, on a girls day out adventure. This piece of art work will engrave all the memories we created.

As I stepped into this building on the very first day as a high school student, I felt as if was experiencing my life in Elementary school all over again. There were teachers, unfamiliar faces passing through the hallways, a different learning environment, in this new school of SLA. I felt as if my life was in crisis again. It was hard to move on from those awesome times I endured. It was burdensome when I had to approach these new faces at this new school. This reminds me of the Elementary school I had transferred to Elementary. I had to go through every single step I had already did all over again.

Element Print Project 2011

Posted by Vannary Kom in Art - 9 - Hull on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at 10:52 pm
The element that was given to me was Copper. Copper is a red-brown metal, the chemical element of atomic number 29. It's used in cellphones, homes computers, jewelries, coinage, etc. Coppers are also a good conductive of heat and electricity.

This project was the same as "negative space drawing." Negative space is a space around a subject of an mage. This part of the drawing is usually neglected, or filled with scribbles. Negative space involves with concentrating on shading in the background and leaving the object white.

As for this art Printmaking project, I chose to draw a coin with with an atomic number, mass and boiling point of the element of copper and placed it inside and around the coin area. Coinage is made out of copper and I thought it would be fairly easy to use this as my printmaking project. There were many mistakes going on when carving the block. I accidentally carved the block way too deep which makes it seems rusty. The atomic numbers, mass numbers, and boiling point numbers did not really showed up. Only the the symbol (Cu) of the element did. When it comes to carving, I only carved the inside of the numbers, the coin, and leave the negative space as it is on the block.

I would have used other bright colors to bring out the drawing, but since copper has the color silver in it's product, I just wanted the color of the background to go with the element. There have been a lot of mistakes, but if  I could go back to redo it, I would definitely try to be careful with the cravings.

Negative Space Drawing.

Posted by Vannary Kom in Art - 9 - Hull on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 9:47 pm
A. Negative space is a space around a subject of an image. The Negative space does not occupied the area of the image. This part of the drawing is usually neglected, or filled with scribbles. Negative space involves with concentrating on shading in the background and leaving the object white.

B.
In the cutouts, the negative space changes around on the paper. [Black] is the negative space. [White] is the object of the drawing. From the first drawing, you can already tell it's a normal drawing picture. There isn't a negative space that's being added onto the drawing.
The second and third drawings shows negative space. The backgrounds are shaded in while the objects are not shaded in...it's just white.

C. It helps an artist to see the balance between light and dark and how objects are put together.

D. Yes, it does enhance the drawings because you can see an object as what it is but when you try and draw the object in front of you, you need to look at the space around the object and focus more on individual lines and segments of it instead of the whole thing.

Vannary Perspective

Posted by Vannary Kom in Art - 9 - Hull on Monday, April 4, 2011 at 11:45 am
perspective

From where we have started with this Perspective project, first thing we have learned on the very first day of art class was how to draw Three-Dimension boxes using Vertical, Horizontal, and Orthogonal lines connecting it to the vanishing point. Knowing what vertical lines, horizontal lines, Orthogonal lines, and Vanishing point are leads us to get an idea of what we have to do for the Classroom drawing. Besides drawing those boxes, we also include a drawing of a bird and worm. It's pretty abnormal, but the bird and worm is used as our vanishing point.

The next thing we did as a class was practicing on how to draw different dimensions of the classroom area. Also, it helps us to get an idea of how our project supposed to be done in a correct way. As a practice, we learned how to draw ceilings, door, wall, floor, and window. It's easier to practice on drawing the objects in the room first before starting the actual project. When doing this project as a class, we had to find the measurements of each objects. Perspective is all about measurements, lines, and vanishing points.

The easiest thing to learn was drawing the object. When we had to the practice as a class, it was pretty much easy. Especially drawing the wall and doors.

The hardest thing to learn was trying to match up the classroom dimension onto the paper that we had to draw on. At first, I did the front wall of the classroom. It took me a a while. Later on, I had messed up on that particular front view of the class. I had to start all over. I noticed the front view of the classroom was hard for me to draw, so I had to pick another side of the room to draw.

pheonix ward did a very great job on his drawing. He added every detail of the classroom object onto his perspective drawing. GENIUS!!!

Vannary, Sarah-Charlotte, April: When your Talking to your Grandparents vs. Your Friend

Posted by Vannary Kom in Spanish 1 - Sanchez on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 12:12 pm
In the Spanish language there are formal and informal ways of speaking. This is very important. To speak to a person who is older than you, you use formal. If they are your age or younger, you use informal. There are two different ways to say "you" in spanish, formal and informal. I learned them with a chart so that is what I am going to use to teach you. This way you can refer back to it. The main two words that you would use Tú and usted but there are some other words that have a difference. For example, in names there are a few different ways, but because I am also doing the topic of names, I will show you then.

Word in Spanish   formal or Informal
Tú                    -->       informal
Usted            -->       formal

The title: When your talking to your grandparents vs. Your Friend is there because the it shows a real life example of the Tú vs. Usted. When your talking to your grandparents you have to use Usted. If you are talking to your friend you would use Tú.

Vannary, Sarah-Charlotte, April: When You travel to a Spanish speaking country and need to ask Questions

Posted by Vannary Kom in Spanish 1 - Sanchez on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 12:11 pm
You might wonder how to say the common question starters. For example: what, why, how, when, and so on. Well here it is. Again I am going to teach you with a chart. For this there is no formal and informal.

This chart explains it all. Now that you know these words... you also know how to start to ask questions when talking to people who speak spanish. Of course, to ask full questions, you need to know other words also. But at least you can now start them. This will help you when you travel to a Spanish speaking country and need to ask questions.

Vannary, Sarah-Charlotte, AprilWhen You Meet Someone for the first Time:

Posted by Vannary Kom in Spanish 1 - Sanchez on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 12:09 pm

When you meet someone new, whats the first thing you often ask? Thats right! You ask for their name! After reading this, you will know how to ask someone their name and respond to that question yourself! All in Spanish, of course. The first thing you need to know for Names is Nombre is the word for "name" in Spanish. To teach you about names, I am going to use bullets. Again names have formal and informal.

• ¿Cómo te llamas (tú)? [informal]
¿Cómo se llama (Ud.)? [formal]   = Whats your name?

• Me llamo __________. ; Yo soy _______. ; Mi nombre es _________. = My name is ______.

• If you were going to say "and you?" after you tell someone your name... you would say either ¿Y tú? when you talk to a younger person or ¿Y Usted (Ud.)? when your talking to an older person.

These are all things to say when you meet someone new.
*******NOTE: Remember which ones are formal and informal! (tú vs. Usted [Ud.]) ********

Vannary, Sarah-Charlotte, April: Months

Posted by Vannary Kom in Spanish 1 - Sanchez on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 7:59 am

La Fecha:

¿Cuál es la fecha? = What is the date?

¿Cuál es la fecha de hoy? = What is today's date?

when answering these questions you would say:

Es el (numero) de(mesa) It is (number) of (month)

When writing the months in Espanol, The months is always lowercased.

When someone asked: ¿Cuál es la fecha?/¿Cuál es la fecha de hoy?

The other person respond: Es el julio de cuatro

Real life application: Asking what's the date and writing it down in the proper way.

miércole - Wednesday

jueves - Thursday

viernes - Friday
