Negative Space, Aateeyah Sharrieff

Posted by Aateeyah Sharrieff in Art - 9 - Hull on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 12:20 pm

1) Negative space is thew space around the object thats being drawled.

2) I found the negative space in my stool by looking at the empty spaces around it. In my cut out, I found negative space by cutting out the outsides of the drawling.

3) It helps a artist see negative space because it helps them see all of the details in the object they are drawling.

4) In my opinion, it sometimes help for certain people to draw the negative space, and for others, it sometimes doesn't. People have different ways of drawling. Not everyone does it the same. So it depends on the person.

Kenyatta's Negative Space Drawing

Posted by Kenyatta Bundy in Art - 9 - Hull on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 12:08 pm

A. Negative space is the space between an object, and not the actual object. When dealing with negative space, you always draw the actual space around the object but not the object itself.

B. The way I found negative space in my stool drawing, was I just looked around the stool, and drew all of the empty space surrounding it. The way I saw negative space in my cut out was, I looked at how the cut out had the 2 different colors, and saw how the cut out showed the space that was actually between the cut out.

C. The reason it helps an artist to see in negative space, is it allows them to see every single detail not only in the thing they want to draw, but also around it, causing you to be able to see every single detail.

D.I believe seeing in negative space does enhance a drawing. With seeing in negative space, you see things in a different perspective and are able to see every single detail of a drawing.

Negative Space

A. Negative space is all the space that is NOT taken up by an object. It's the background space.

B. For my cut out, I found negative space in the outlining of the different parts. For the stool, I first focused on the outline of the stools and then looked at the space outside the outline, not inside.

C. Seeing negative space can give an artist more insight into what they are drawing, and how the object affects the space around it.

D. I think that negative space enhances a drawing, because you become more aware of the environment that the object you are drawing is placed in.

Negative Space

A. Negative space is the area of the sketch or drawing that is not the thing that is being drawn. It makes up the background.

B. To find the negative space in my two projects I saw where there were no object. For the second project I used the background to figure out where the negative space was. In the stool project I used the space where there were not any stools to find the negative space.

C. It helps the artist recognize the shadow and understand the shape of the object. It makes the artist comprehend the depth of the object.

D. Negative space allows the artist to have the right amount of gap in between each object.

Negative Space

A.  Negative space is all the parts of a picture that aren't the frames of each thing in the picture. So its the spaces around the objects in the pictures. For example. The sketch above is of a turned over chair 2 stools and a wet floor sign. You can really see the 2 stools because the negative space around them outline the stools. But for objects like the Wet Floor sign you can only see parts of it because only the top part is in a negative space or has negative space.

B: In my cut out I found the negative space in everything I didn't cut out. So the construction paper that never got cut, was on the left side positive space and on the left side negative. In the sketch above, the negative space was pretty much everything sketched and scribbled around the objects. But the white spaces, the object outlines, were the positive spaces.

C. Seeing negative space as an artist really helps the artist draw a more accurate and precise drawing of the object they are drawing because they not only take in mind what the object in and what are the details on the object but also the details around the object.

D. Yes. As I said in part C it really helps because, let's say, you are drawing a cup. You think of a regular glass cup as a cylinder. But if you take into account the things around the cup it might actually seem like a basic cylinder to you. It will then become a more detailed "cylinder" or in this case, a more detailed cup or a more ACCURATE AND PRECISE cup.

Negative Space

What is negative space? Lets say you were viewing a building, and you were drawing the building. What would you usually do? You would draw the space that the building occupy’s. The space that you normally leave blank would be the negative space, the space that has nothing in it. That space is the negative space.

In the cut out drawing I did. I took the one half of the bird print out, and I would trace each part on the green piece of paper, and I would equally balance the green cut outs on each side of the black background. It is hard for me to explain it so if you take a look at the drawing, try to see what it is that I did because I cannot put it into words.

I found the negative space in the stool drawings by examining the objects and determining which space would I normally draw, and what space I would normally leave blank. Then I would draw in the space I would normally leave blank, and leave blank the space I would normally fill in.

For an artist, if you see negative space, you see more of the picture than is you were just looking at the positive space. It can help you make a much better drawing than previously before.

Seeing negative space can enhance drawings if you know how to use it properly. It can make objects stand out if you want them to. It is a very useful tool.

Negative Space Reflection

Posted by Brian Birkmire in Art - 9 - Hull on Monday, April 30, 2012 at 10:08 am

A: Negative space is the area around shapes that is not being used

B: i knew the negative space in the cut out was the background shapes that were darker color. I knew the negative parts in the stool drawling were the parts inside each shape and angle.

C: It helps an artist by giving them a better way to shape their image so someones eyes can adjust to it and see the image more clearly.

D: Yes, it does help, it enhances the image so the naked eye can focus on the actual part being looked at better.

Negative Space

A. Negative space is the parts of a picture/drawing/painting etc. that is not filled with an object or person. If it were compared to a freezer, it would be the air, and the non-negative space would be the food.

B. In my cut out, I found the negative space by cutting out the objects, and then pasting them on one side, while a pasted the left over parts on the other side. For my drawing I simply drew the air, or the things that weren't there.

C. It helps artists to see in negative space because it helps with depth, and the outline of the drawing. It helps the artist create a clearer picture of their subject.

D. Seeing in negative spaces drawings because it adds definition, depth, and clarity to the piece

1. Negative space is the opposite of positive space. It's the spaces in between objects, not the object itself.

2. I found the negative space by drawing the object, but coloring in everything but the object. For the cutout, I just cut out on side of one piece of paper and used everything i cut and pasted it on each side like I was supposed to.

3. It helps because it can give them a better view of the art and it can give them ideas to make better paintings. It gives them a better view of the object or objects they're painting.

4. Not really because seeing the negative space is like seeing the positive space. It doesn't enhance a drawing any better.

  1. Negative space is the part of a drawing that is not the object being drawn or the things behind it. If there is no object in that part of the picture then you get negative space.
  2. I cut out the picture and then used reflection. The parts that were left were negative space.
  3. If an artist can see negative space then he/she can better understand the shape of the subject.
  4. Yes. It defines edges and shapes.
