Julian Makarechi- Capstone

Posted by Julian Makarechi in Capstone - Best - Wed on Sunday, May 10, 2015 at 7:12 pm

My name is Julian Makarechi, and I am a senior at SLA. For my senior capstone I decided to organize an Ultimate Frisbee tournament with my fellow SLA Varsity captain, Brian Birkmire. This tournament was held in Oaks, PA and Edgley Fields on April 25th & 26th. It was a no brainer for me to incorporate Ultimate in my capstone because it has played a major role in my life, since freshman year.". With the help of my coach/mentor/principal, Chris Lehmann, I was able connect with many vital contacts that helped make my tournament successful. One of the first major steps I took was to create a website that detailed information about my tournament and a spot to register. Once I finalized all the specifics, I was able to announce my tournament at a captains meeting in March. In total, 28 teams signed up,for the 4 available divisions. Throughout the whole project I must have sent hundreds of emails about checks, field layouts, schedules, and team registrations. The two weeks before my event were extremely hectic and stressful because of everything from getting teams registered to creating schedules and laying out the fields. I had to make sure everything was in place, everything from having the right amount of cones for every field, at both locations, to making sure we had parents that could volunteer to bring food to the fields early in the morning were in place. While this project was a stressful because of some setbacks and difficulties, I am very proud of the product that Brian and I came up with. Since I would like to go into sports management, I feel like this tournament taught me a lot and gave me some experience.

Instructions on how to make Pasta al Pesto

Ingredients:

- pasta (500 g)

- pesto (5oz)

- salt (pinch)

- water (fill pot & 1 table spoon for pasta bowl)

- parmigiano cheese

Process:

1. Boil pot of water. Put a pinch of salt in the water.

2. Once water is boiling, put pasta in the water for about 8-10. You want the pasta to be a little bit had and not extremely mushy.

3. Once done cooking the pasta, strain the pasta.

4. In a large serving bowl, put your pesto at the bottom and put 1 table spoon of water to make the sauce creamy.

5. Dump the cooked pasta into serving bowl, mix well and add parmigiono cheese.

6. Ready to serve.

Analysis:

Since most people do not make homemade pasta, the pasta used in this meal is almost all processed. Pasta is made of mostly flour, eggs, wheat, in other a lot of gluten. However, the pesto is 100% whole foods if you get it fresh.

In one box of Barilla, there is about 8g of fat, 336 carbs, and 0 sugar. The carbs and fat will cause weight gain but also a lot lipids to fight of viruses. Carbohydrates give your body with a lot of energy that we our bodies need. The process of how we digest pasta is quite simple. As soon as the pasta hits the tongue, the saliva immediately starts to breakdown the carbohydrates so it is easier to go through the stomach.  The cell walls and acid then deconstruct the pasta. Eating pasta everyday is not a good idea, it will make you gain way to much weight, and too much gluten isn't good for you.

The pasta was probably made in Italy, but they probably got some of the ingredients from other countries in Asia. Since Barilla is such a large company, the pasta was manufactured  commercially.

This is a pretty cheap meal, because pesto costs about 7$, and then box of pasta is 12$. A whole box is about 500 grams, which feeds 4-6 people. So per person it would be out 4$ per person, if there are about 5 people.

Making pasta at home takes a lot time, effort and precisions. I think that just buying a good brand of pasta is a lot more convenient. Especially since it takes so long for the pasta to go bad, so you buy a lot at a time.

Quarter 4 ART- Julian Makarechi

Posted by Julian Makarechi in Art Advanced - Hull - e2 on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 9:05 am

My name is Julian Makarechi, and I am a junior at Science Leadership Academy. This year I decided to become a better artist by taking Ms. Hull's. In her class I am able to explore any different parts of art I wish to. So, I decided to create three major pieces. Each piece of art has multiple steps. This quarter I drew 3 cartoon characters. For each, there were three stages. First I drew it with pencil, then with sharpie, then with colored pencil and then with both sharpie and colored pencil. I drew Baby Donald Duck, Baby Daffy Duck, and Maggie Simpson .

BLOG:My name is Julian Makarechi, and I am a junior at Science Leadership Academy. This quarter I have decided to further my art knowledge by taking Ms. Hull's advanced art class for the second year in a row. In her class I am given the freedom to chose all my projects. So, I decided to create three major pieces. Each piece of art has multiple steps. The first piece I did was too create four collages. My first piece consisted of four artistic and unique collages made on keynote. The second piece I did was four different sketches of a character. I decided to use Stewie from Family Guy. First I sketched him out with pencil, then with a sharpie, then with colored pencils and finally with both sharpies and colored pencils. For my third I decided to recreate another character because it was so much fun. I did the same process for Stewie, but just with Hello Kitty.

QUARTER 1 ART (E2)- Julian Makarechi

My name is Julian Makarechi, a junior at Science Leadership Academy. This quarter I have decided to further my art knowledge by taking Ms. Hull's advanced art class for the second year in a row. In her class i am allowed a lot of freedom is what I create. So, I decided to create three major pieces. Each piece of art has multiple steps. The first piece I did was too create four collages. For the first three collages I decided to put together a flag of my favorite sports team colors by using pictures of my favorite players on those teams. For my last one, i decided to be very abstract. I went through many sports magazines and cut out many things that I liked and put them all together in a unique way. The second piece I did was four different sketches of a character. I decided to use Patrick from Spongebob. First I sketched him out with pencil, then with a sharpie, then with colored pencils and finally with both sharpies and colored pencils.  For my third and final piece I decided to do research on my favorite artist and attempt to copy on of his or hers masterpieces. My favorite artist is Pablo Picasso so I gave a short biography of him and then tried copy his painting of his very own self portrait.

Here is the link to all my sketches and collages: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjMpjVpA

Shown below are all my pieces of art this quarter and my biography of Pablo Picasso:

Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain on April 8, 1881. Pablo grew up in a home full of art. His father worked at a Fine Art school and was a curator. This inspired Pablo to go to the Academy of Arts in Madrid. Later, in 1901 he went to Paris to do experiments on new and never seen styles. Picasso started trying at some many different art forms, from Cubism all the way to Surrealism and was known for being a pioneer in in the 20th century. He met his wife, Olga Khokhlova, at a Russian ballet in Roma. They also had a child named Paolo, however they ended up separating in 1935. Picasso believed in peace and he expressed that in 1937 with one of his first masterpieces named Guernica. He painted just after Germany  bombed a city in Spain. Pablo Picasso continued to make political paintings and made a living off some of them. He was definitely one the most known and best artist of the 20th century. Picasso had the ability to relate to so many different cultures. While living in France, he went to a dinner party. That night he died and left behind a huge legacy.

English Q1 BM (Book Review)- Julian Makarechi

WATER

10/25/13

Open

He was the youngest of four siblings, but his father gave him all his attention, as if he only had one child to take care of. His dad had already planned out his whole life and that he would be forced to do what his father said. Most kids who become number one in the world at something when they are older, usually are destined to do it or have an inner passion for being successful. Not for Andre Agassi; he never wanted to be one of the best tennis players in the world, he did not even want to be top 200 in the world. He could have cared less about it. His father deemed Andre the “chosen one” out of all of his children. Emmanuel Agassi committed most of his time making sure Andre knew everything about tennis there was to know. Not one day went by that Andre was not being tortured by the rigor of tennis that his father put him through.

The only thing he cared about, or was forced to care about, was tennis; school did not even matter, as long as he was making his father happy by playing tennis. Mr. Agassi would do anything it would take for his son to be pro, even if that meant sending him miles away from his home, family and best friend, Perry, in Florida. After realizing his son could not handle the workload from school along with his hours of daily tennis, he decided to completely forget about school and solely concentrate on tennis.

Emmanuel, informally known as Mike, was a former olympian who never seemed to be the best husband or father, but was still a reason for the triumphant life that Andre went on to have. Andre had so many people to thank; his lovers, coaches and counselors were his team. He would look out for them and they would look out for him. It was as if his coach was on the court with him too--they were teammates.

Whether you know Andre Agassi from his crazy hair, old commercials or battles with Pete Sampras, you probably have heard of him before. Andre wants to tell the world what his life was like and the struggles he went through. He really makes the reader think about the important things and people in his life. Andre wants you to think about when it is a good time to hold back, take a break or go full throttle and give it all you have. What will your priorities be and how will you reach them? When you are criticized or others don’t believe in you, will you stay down or rise up and prove them wrong?

Throughout this book, there are many wonderful dialogues that can really make you chuckle between Andre and his trainer. You can really see how much they love each other through the words; it is almost like you can see what their facial expressions are just because of the style of writing. Andre Agassi uses so many creative and descriptive words that give the text a beautiful flow. The way he depicts his hardships, breakups and injuries is very impressive. You end up thinking that those things are actually happening to you and you know exactly what it feels like. During the recaps and depictions of the games he played, there is so much suspense that you cannot stop reading. He lets the reader know what he is thinking and what his body is feeling in the process of every game in a remarkable way. However, since his style of writing is so realistic, occasionally there is some foul language.

A part that really stood out to me was when he was having a problem with a woman he was seeing. He did a great job of writing everything that was going on in that moment of his life. He gave you all the reasons why he made his decisions and why he knew that he was doing the right thing. Even though that part is one of the saddest parts in the whole book, I loved how Agassi wrote it.

One aspect of his life that I wished I could have experienced more was the relationship that he had with his sister. Throughout the book, she is rarely mentioned and you get the idea that they were not that close. If that was the case, then I wish that he had told the reader about that part of his life more.

People who are interested in reading this book should have a solid base of tennis knowledge in order to understand key moments throughout Andre’s life. Knowing a thing or two about other great tennis players is a plus as well, because it allows you to visualize Andre’s games against those players even better. I feel that if you want to enjoy this book, you should also be patient as you read about his life. Whether all you want to read about is his life as a pro or you think that all the matches get boring, after a while, you need to sit tight and keep on going.

National Day on Writing- Julian Makarechi

Posted by Julian Makarechi in English 3 - Rami - D on Monday, October 21, 2013 at 2:15 pm
Writing allows us to communicate is silence, without disturbing the peace or have to speak up. Writing lets me tell the world whatever is on my mind by simply putting words onto a piece of paper. When you think about it, writing is one of the most popular and long lasting traditions is almost every culture. It allows us to give others our opinions and let people know about our thought process. I connect to my friends using the words that I write our type, I stay connected with them and am always there for them. Writing down words help you remember things and it gives them more meaning. When someone writes he or she is given so much freedom about what words to use and where to put them. Writing is one the biggest ways I communicate with all the people I know.

My name is Julian Makarechi, a sophomore at Science Leadership Academy. This year I have decided to try to become a better artist by taking Ms. Hull's Advanced Art class. Lately her class has been focused a lot textures, furs, hair, cartoons and faces. The sketches posted below are the ones that I have been working on through out the duration of the 4th quarter. I used drawspace.com to help me figure out the steps to each of my sketches. For my outside project, I decided to paint a simple smiley face on a ceiling tile (a picture of this is also in the slideshow below). With the help of my classmates I was able to make this outside very professional and neat. Overall, I am very proud of my work this quarter and I feel like this class has made me a better artist.

Julian Makarechi- Othello Journals

Posted by Julian Makarechi in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at 8:49 pm
Journal#1:

Quote with additions (all additions will be in parenthesis):

I have rubbed this young quat almost to the sense,

And he grows angry. (Make facial expressions demonstrating how aggravated he is. Speak with a bit of annoyance or attitude. Try to make the audience know that you are irritated by this problem. Avoid long pauses to show how much you do not like this situation.)

Now, whether he kill Cassio

Or Cassio him, or each do kill the other,

Every way makes my gain. (Right now you have to assure the audience that you have things under control, and that even if you are annoyed you still have everything planned out correctly. Lower your voice a little to sound calm, composed, soothing and carefree.) Live Roderigo,

He calls me to a restitution large

Of gold and jewels that I bobbed from him

As gifts to Desdemona.

It must not be. (Have larger pauses and a small tremble in the voice showing that you are a little bit worried because you know that it could be hard for you to reach your goal.)

If Cassio do remain

He hath a daily beauty in his life

That makes me ugly. (Face another side of the audience, just to separate your thoughts on the two characters. You want to show a hint of jealousy so maybe you could pout or act frustrated that you do not have the same skills as he does. Raise your voice with anger when you say the word "ugly".) And besides, the Moor

May unfold me to him—there stand I in much peril.

No, he must die. (When saying these lines act alert and aware of what could go wrong. During the line"No, he must die" be very determined.)  But so, I hear him coming.

-Iago, Act 5 Scene 1

Journal#2:

Character: Bianca

Important scenes: Act 4 Scn 1, Act 5 Scn 1

Questions:

Since Bianca is not aware of Iago's plan or the meaning of the handkerchief, she is very confused and does not understand why people are acting so rude towards her. It aggravates her that she is surrounded by such madness and randomness. She does not enjoy the harsh words that she is receiving from Cassio and is starting to get suspicious but also confused about the situation. Bianca gets to the point where she is sick and tired of his disrespectfulness and wants Cassio to give back the handkerchief or else she will leave. She sees personally that she must lay down the law and give Cassio the option of doing the right thing and going to dinner with her. She is not afraid to let him know that she does not mind getting rid of him. The other characters like Cassio and Iago call her a whore or strumpet at times. They use those terms to reference or call her, even right in front of her. In their minds she is useless and they do not value her opinion. She is told that she is a whore and to stop getting in the way. They do not tell her what is going, which makes her the odd one out.

Journal#3:

At the age of 8, Othello was separated from his mother and was forced to be a slave. All his life he had been used to hardship from the people around him, but his older sister helped him be strong and to never stop fighting. His sister, Sandra became the only person Othello could rely on, especially when his mother left. He was super protective of her and would make sure no guy looked at his sister in any dirty way. A few days after Othello's 18th birthday, Sandra was kidnapped by some guys who were from the North and he never saw her again. Without her, he was alone and he did not know what to do or how to control himself. He would never forgive the people who took the most important person in his life away from him.  Because he lost the two most important women he had in his life, he made sure to always protect any other woman he loved. After losing his sister, he decided to flee from his master and join the army. He fought with the South and made sure he could get his revenge. His determination and anger made him one of the best soldiers. As time went by, he kept on improving and becoming smarter than the other officers ahead of him. He ended up surpassing those officers and becoming a general after nine years.

Journal#4:

On Tuesday, Leah, Dylan and I will be performing Scene 2. There are three speaking characters in our scene: Iago (played by Leah), Cassio (played by Dylan) and Othello (played by me). Roderigo will also take part in this scene (played by Max) but has no lines; he will just be struck by Cassio. As Othello, I will have speak with a lot of diction and authority to show how noble and high up I am. When I first enter I am going to be very concerned, confused and angry when speaking to Iago because I am not okay with Cassio attacking Roderigo. Later, when I end up firing Cassio, I will speak with care when I tell him the bad news but also be very serious to show him that what he did was wrong. Some of the actions I will do will be to always turn to the person I am speaking to and use my hands to show my emotions. For example, when I first come in and am alarmed by the situation, I will be waiving my hands and pointing. Then, when I fire Cassio, I will put my hand on his shoulder as a sign of compassion. My tone of voice will be very high and angry when I rant to Iago about what happened.

As a group, we organized everything; when people walk in, what actions to do and how to interact with each other. I think the thing that will make our presentation memorable is when Dylan speaks in a drunk tone and beats up Max. Also, we are all friends so I think people can tell the great connection we have on stage. As for a prop, I will be wearing an old WWII soldier’s helmet to show Othello's power as a general. This will add to my act and show more authority. Originally, I wanted to use a handkerchief for my prop but it was not relevant in the story yet.

Post Performance Journal:

- “Cassio, I love thee, but never more be officer of mine.” (Scene 2, read by Othello).

I feel like this is important to the play in many different ways. First of all, it shows that Othello is taking charge and can acknowledge problems. This lets the audience know that he has authority and is not afraid to use it. This scene marks one of the first interactions between Cassio and Othello, where the Moor starts to dislike Cassio because of his actions. I also think that the line  above shows that sometimes Othello knows how to do things in certain situations and how to be classy. There were three main things that I did when I said this line in our performance.

First, when I said: “Cassio, I love thee,” I put my hand on Dylan’s (Cassio) shoulder to show him that I do actually feel that way and care. As I continued to say: “but never more be officer of mine,” I spoke in a very serious tone to let him know that he really messed up and that I am upset. Lastly, before I left the stage I saluted Cassio out of respect and bid him farewell.

- I think that our performance went as we had planned and we did well. We were all able to really become the character and act from his perspective. I am proud that all that time spent rehearsing and brainstorming ideas of how to be more creative and to get  the audience’s attention worked out. Before getting up there, we all agreed on what actions to do at certain moments so that we could make our scene more realistic. I must say that I expected us to do well and be confident but not this much. I thought that Leah was very articulate and determined. Also, Dylan did a great job at acting drunk but still not going too far. The part where he is fighting with Max (Roderigo) was very entertaining and useful. Maybe, if I were to redo it, I would ask everyone to have their lines memorized (so it would be more professional) and use more props so that we could be more interactive.

- I definitely had more fun watching my classmates acting and me performing to the class than reading from the book. I thought that doing this project helped us not only to learn more about the play and understand what it looks like acted out, but it also taught us how to act and the meaning behind Shakespeare’s writing. This whole process helped me understand  how to read this type of writing and take its clues for stage directions.

My name is Julian Makarechi, a sophomore at Science Leadership Academy. This year I have decided to take a more intense art class taught by Ms. Hull. Lately her class has been focused a lot on shading and she has been able to give us techniques to how to do it well. The sketches posted below are the ones that I have been working on through out the duration of the 3rd quarter. I used drawspace.com to help me figure out the steps to each of my sketches. For my outside project, I decided to paint the Philadelphia 76ers logo on a ceiling tile (a picture of this is also in the slideshow below). International Educator- Julian Makarechi

Posted by Julian Makarechi in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at 8:03 pm

Julie Castagnet left everything behind just to teach children. She had to deal with not being with her family for her whole career. This young French woman took the chance to move to the US to find a job as an educator, but with doing so she had to separate herself form her home country and family.

PLEASE NOTE: 9 minutes and 9 seconds into the podcast this question should be added: "Did you try to look for jobs to help with money, besides being an educator?".

Julian Makarechi- Interview- Q3 BM

This is a story of a French teacher that decided to work abroad, in the US. There were some good things and bad things that occurred but she never stopped loving what she did. Not only was she the only person in her family to be come a language teacher but also the first to move to the United Sates.

If one wants cross boundaries they have to be willing to be brave, give it all they have and make sacrifices. It also comes with a lot of self motivation; to make a change one must feel very strong and confident about their goal. Crossing boundaries takes time and usually it is hard to do it on your own; one should accept help from others.

This was my first time using Audacity so I had problems editing things. I would recommend to use Garageband to avoid such confusion. I did not quite understand the way it was set up and wished things were more clear.

Throughout this project I learned how make a podcast. The examples that were given to us in class were very helpful. Before this was assigned to me, I did now know all they key elements to make a well rounded interview. I used what I learned for my final project;  an intro, deep question, a conclusion and a reflection. The interviews we listened to gave me great ideas for how ask questions that will get the speaker to go into depth about the topic.

I definitely feel that my strengths of this project was how the story was told and how it effected Julie’s life. I was able to get her to tell me things that I did not even know, and that ended up helping me to get more information on how exactly she crossed boundaries. Almost none of my questions made her have a one or two word answer, which was good. Another thing that made this project good was how we were both able to relate and have a great conversation about the topic. One thing that I do not believe that I did well on was my editing.

Julian Makarerchi- Quarter 2 Sketches and Artist Statement

Posted by Julian Makarechi in Art Advanced - Hull on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at 10:22 am
I am Julian Makarechi a sophomore at Science Leadership Academy. I have taken some art classes in the past at my old elementary school, but nothing serious. This is my second year taking art at SLA and my second quarter in this advanced art class. Like last year I have Ms. Hull as my teacher and she has been able to teach me many different methods to improve my artistic skills. The sketches below are drawings that were assigned to do on drawspace.com. This site is very helpful, its explains how to do each drawing and shows you other peoples sketches as well. As the quarter went by my sketches started to improve, I was able to get a general understand of most of the topics. The sketches vary from portraits and animals to shading and squirkles. I am pretty happy with my art work and how I have developed it.

“Oh arright, sounds chillin brah. Imma fry! just watch!”

Being asked to go play basketball by my friends was something that pretty much never happened to me before I went to SLA. When I started going to high school, everyone was always talking about basketball: basketball video games, SLA’s basketball team, college basketball, but mainly the NBA. It was really different for me because nobody in my household was really into basketball. My parents are from Iran and Italy so the main sport in our house was soccer, but there was also a lot of American football because of the Philadelphia Eagles’ success when I was younger. However, basketball never really came up until the middle of 8th grade; maybe because only a select few of my classmates followed it or maybe because the Philadelphia basketball team had been playing very poorly lately. Anyways, during my last year in middle school, I started playing occasionally and watching Philadelphia 76ers games when I had the time or did not forget about them. Then, when I went to high school, I was surrounded by such a basketball enthusiastic community that I developed an obsession with it too. Of course I rooted for the Philadelphia 76ers because I have “Philly pride,” even though they had not been doing so well. Once my close friends realized that I really liked basketball, they started inviting me to games and gave me a chance. I had never been that good at playing but I always had a great time. As weeks and months went by I started talking like my basketball friends did. I picked up on all the terms that they used on and off the court and in a way they started accepting me more. It was like I became one of them. Speaking in that manner was becoming who I was. I would use them all the time; at home, school, with my friends. The year before that I did not really talk with that much slang and modern expressions. It would even effect the music I listened to; it got to the point where I could sing along to rap songs with my friends. When my older brother got back from college for Christmas break, he was very surprised and thought I had changed. It was odd for him because I balance in between my original self and the new person I changed to. I would go up to my friends that use very proper english all the time and mess with them by using slang. They would either react by laughing because in their minds it was different or weird for a “white boy” to be speaking like that or they would just feel awkward and not say anything. I became the “go-to guy” for those friends when they did not understand what somebody said.

“Yo she bad for real!” Jaaz said.

“Hey Julian,” Emalyn whispered “What does he even mean!?”

“He’s is trying to say that she is hot or pretty” I responded. This was different for me because nobody really asks me about what things means unless it is in another language or about sports.

Then one day at school things changed.

“Yo Nigga whatchu up to after school?”

“I’m not sure yet man, but yo I’m white.”

“Naw Nigga you black! You an inside out Oreo!”

I never really thought that would happen and frankly I did not exactly understand why. I did not ever think that the way I talked or the music I listened to or the sports I played could influence some one to call me a “Nigga.” Personally, when I speak, I do not use that word at all. It surprised me that the way one pronounces things and speaks can cause somebody to refer to that person as something that they are not, based on what society racially profiles them as. This showed me how language and how we all use it has an effect on how people think of us. I never hated it when they called me that but I never pushed them to call me that more. I just let it be, because I know my friends use that term to show me that they accept me and that they have respect for me. Now a days, that is what that word can refer to.

I feel like the use of bad words or derogatory expressions have become part of our everyday language in my high school community. On the other hand, I find my parents using curse words very seldom. For them, it is only necessary to make them a part of their vocabulary when they are in rough situations, but my classmates and I use them as a way to express ourselves at any point in the day. There have been times where a curse word or two slipped out in front of my parents. Since my brothers and I are maturing they do not usually “freak out” but they do not encourage speaking in that manner. I also feel like it is not right to go home after a long day of school and say all types of profanity in the presence of your parents. This why my conversations with my friends at school can sound very different than with my mom or dad, even if we are talking about the same thing.

I feel comfortable talking to my friends like that because they are part of this generation as well. “Fuck this bullshit. Bullshit of course is everything you and the others fear is beyond you: books, essays, tests...”(I Just Wanna be Average by Mike Rose). That is something that I would say to my peers at school if I feel that certain way, but never to my parents. Even if I was okay with saying anything like that to either one of my parents, they would still not comprehend the slang and expression that I use regularly.

I conclude that society and age affects language. Communication is something used everyday and how we use it can have an impact on our personalities. Language can influence someone and their relationship with other people. All these experiences changed who I am and how people view me.

The Unknown

“Mr. Johnson, could you please tell me and Lieutenant Smith what your night was like on January 7th, 2012?”

“Well you see officers, it went like this...

Its a cold Wednesday night at 11PM. I am freezing; in fact, it’s more than freezing, its 13 degrees. As I walk back to my house on the South side of Chicago, I try not to act like I am freaking out. I want to seem “chillin.” Doing that is a considerably hard task because I do not even know if my wife is home taking care of Maya and Leah. You see, the thing is that lately my girl and I have not been on the same page. It’s crazy that after all this time we can both just lose feelings for each other at the same time. The worst part about it is that she does not even care about our two little girls.

Finally I get off the El and its just 5 more minutes until I can see the two people that can always put a smile on my face. I never get a chance to see them in the morning because I have to be at my first job at 6 AM. I keep on thinking to myself if my babies are safe or not; will she even be home? Where I live one must know where to go and where not to go this late at night.  The moment I have been waiting for all day is just seconds away but as I approach our porch I realize the door is open.

I step into the house and there is complete darkness. Some how I find a light switch. My house had been robbed and everything that I have worked for for the past 7 years has vanished. But that is not my main concern. Where are my children? I run into the bedroom and find my two little babies handcuffed to the heater. I start to break down into tears. Maya and Leah have bruises and scars everywhere. I try to wake them up but they are unconscious. Since I cannot afford the phone bill, I have to run down the street to a pay phone to report what had happened.

As I wait for the police and ambulance all I can do is sit by them and wash them off. I just cannot understand why someone would do this to me. I have lived a respectful and hard working life; what did I do to deserve any of this? My mother taught me that things are earned not given, and I earned everything that was once in my house.

The second big question I have is who. Who would do this to me and my family? I have a decent relationships with everyone on the block and I have never had any problems with my coworkers. The only person that has been disrespectful and violent towards me lately is Natasha, my “wife.” The past few months she has been coming home later than me drunk and all drugged up. I cannot think of anybody else that would do such a thing to me, besides just a random thug.”

Julian Makarechi- Sugar Skull

Posted by Julian Makarechi in Art Advanced - Hull on Monday, November 26, 2012 at 8:06 am
1. A sugar skull (calavera in spanish) is made out of sugar (edible), they are used to celebrate the " Day of the Death" (Cinco de Mayo). They can also be used as tombs and altars.

2. The design of my sugar skull was inspired by the traditional mexican sugar skull. The pictures I found were able to give me a good understand of what a standard sugar skull looks like. Most sugar skulls have many plants and dots. That is why I put a lot of swirls, dots and floral designs on my sugar skull. I used white for mine because it was on the most commonly used colors.

3. First I did research on sugar skulls themselves and what they are used for. I was able to get a general understand of what they should look like. I also did a couple of sketches of the skulls. My second step was to find some one that would let me plaster their face because I did not feel comfortable doing it. Thankfully, Wynn was able to help me out and let me mold his face with the plaster. The first step to this was to gather all the materials (hot water, straw, paper towels and plaster), then I had to wet stripes of the plaster in the hot water and mold it to his face. It was necessary that I put a lot of layers on his face so that the masks keeps it shape. The straw was used so that Wynn was able to breathe during the process. After that was done I let my plaster dry over night and Wynn washed off all the plaster from his face. The next class period I painted my mask black with white designs.

Post for Change

Posted by Julian Makarechi in English 1 - Dunn on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 9:51 pm

In my earlier blog posts I talked about the effects of poverty on a student's academic success and the relationship between education, unemployment and homelessness. I also mentioned some information about homeless people infected with HIV/AIDS. If the reader would like to read those two previous blogs please visit these sites: Blog 1, Blog 2.

I am currently holding a fundraiser for homeless children that need a place to stay and an education.  To draw attention to this topic, I put posters that asked for donations to Stand up for Kids around my school and a PDF of that poster in the advisory memo so that all the parents, teachers and students could find out about it. Some students at Science Leadership Academy have already contacted me about donations.

I decided  help StandUp For Kids this because “more than 94% of the financial donations go directly to assisting homeless and street kids”.  This information means that when I ask people to donate they know that their money will be used for putting and end to youth homelessness and that they are not be wasting their money. However, my main goal was not to see how much money I could collect; it was to make people aware of this topic and for them to spread the word. When people can relate to something and learn about it, that is when change starts to happen.

After making my community aware of this issue, the next step to making sure all children get an education and that they have shelter is to have people make a change by volunteering and donating. This will reduce the number of homeless kids in America (1.5 million). One way to make a change without donating money is donating things to the Salvation Army. Once this organization is done collecting all their donated items (t-shirts, shoes, household items)  they sell them to gain money for people in need like all the homeless kids in the United States. Also if they are people that feel very strongly about homeless children in America with HIV/AIDS they can volunteer and donate to the Philly Aids Thrift store.

I was able to raise a total of $62.62 to donate to Stand Up for Kids. Even Though that the amount of money that raised was not that great, my campaign was very successful in raising awareness.  I would like to thank all the people that donated, but most of all Jeremy Spry, Alexa Dunn, Chris Lehmann, Pejman Makarechi, Carlo Makarechi, Bijan Makarechi, Giovanna Chiti and Ray Albarouki. All those people helped me perfect my original content. I could not have done it without them and if it was not for them people would not be as aware of the poverty in the United States as they are now.

I wonder if in the future I will find better ways to inform people about something that is important to me.

The effects of HIV/AIDS on homeless people

Posted by Julian Makarechi on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at 9:36 pm

After I did more research, I realized that there are many ways how people become homeless and poor. There are also many consequences. For example, 3-20% of homeless people have HIV/AIDS. Also when someone has AIDS it is 44% harder for them to find housing in Philadelphia, PA. I learned that some of the reasons that poverty causes HIV/AIDS is that they do not have access to good health care and adequate medications. The issue at hand does not affect orphans that much because most of them are  placed in foster homes and stay with relatives. Although, for the ones that are homeless, they are still suffering from poverty, hunger and either bad education or none at all.

I am not living in poverty but my mom is having trouble earning money through her business and she will have to work for the rest of her life. Because of this, as a family, we have had to cut back on some things and really think about our priorities.

I thought it would be a good idea to promote awareness to this topic by asking people for donations to an organization called Stand up for kids, because “three quarters of American families donate to charity, giving $1,800 each, on average” (ABC 20/20).This encourages me that my goal to raise money for this organization will go well. However I am still left wondering how much students and their families will donate to this cause.

ln my opinion every child needs education and somewhere to stay. I think that this is an important issue that is not talked about a lot and things are not being done to help it frequently enough. I strongly believe that this organization can help children who are lacking these things in their lives. However, organizations like this one are not the only ones that have to make a change. I believe that the government should strongly encourage everyone to get tested for HIV/AIDS. This video explains the importance of preventing HIV/AIDS and what the government should do to help.

E4U8- Julian Makarechi y Whitney Washington

Posted by Julian Makarechi in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Sunday, May 13, 2012 at 6:10 pm
Soundtrack:
Soundtrack:
I will always love you”.
( Julian)
( Julian)
(Whitney)
8. Send Me on My Way- Rusted Root ( Cuando Minerva pregunta a Patria si puede cuidar a los niños): Este canción es feliz y “facil”. (Whitney)

The effects of poverty on a student's academic success

Posted by Julian Makarechi in English 1 - Dunn on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 7:00 pm

For our quarter 4 Benchmark we had to chose an issue today that we are passionate about and we had to research and blog about the topic in order to raise awareness. For my last project of the year in English class I chose to study the effects of poverty on a student's academic success and the relationship between education, unemployment and homelessness. I wanted to learn more about this issue because I do not feel that I know enough about people who are suffering from poverty because of my middle-class upbringing. I also know how important it is for everybody to receive an education so they can do well in life. A student’s social class should not have an effect on the quality of their education, because everyone needs to be educated and literate to survive later on. People need to know about this devastating issue and do something about it even if they are not affected by it!

According to the National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP), “15 billion children in the United States (21% of all children) live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level.” This means that only three in four American adolescents graduate from high school. This is troubling because not graduating raises the chance of living in poverty by 49%. This causes 1 in 50 US kids to be homeless. Another reason for homelessness is that 44.9% of the kids that are now homeless had parents that were alcoholics. When children are homeless it makes them more vulnerable to getting sick and this how “more than 1 in 7 homeless children have moderate to severe health conditions, such as asthma” (CNN). This leads to 13 kids dying on the street everyday. How can people still live with the fact that 1.16 million homeless children will not graduate high school? Poverty has a negative impact on schools and makes it harder to have decent facilities and quality teachers. Schools in low income areas are just not prepared to take on all the challenges in giving poor students an education. “Pic 1” shows how important an education is to get employed and demonstrates that we need to make sure that all students get at least a high school diploma.

Pic 1: This graph shows the unemployment by level of education. It tell us that if someone does not earn a high school diploma they will have a harder time getting a job.

There are organizations in place to help. For example, the Pennsylvania's Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness Program. Their main goal “is to make sure homeless youth have access to appropriate education while removing barriers that homeless children face.” There are also many homeless shelters around the country but the problem is that a lot of people do not realize that they qualify as homeless and when they do they are too scared to join a homeless shelter, as explained in this video. People need to start standing up for kids in their communities and end the vicious cycle of youth homelessness.

At its roots, this issue can be traced back to the failure of public education to reach children in low-income neighborhoods in America. The student poverty issue is not as big as a problem at Science Leadership Academy (the school that I attend) because it is a magnet high school and it has a large variety of people. However there are still students who suffer from poverty and our school is affected by the budget cuts of the Philadelphia School District. This is why I question if every child will ever receive an adequate education and I wonder if there will come a time where all schools are more or less equal.

Pic 2: This pie chart shows the distribution of age when it comes to homeless people. It tells us that more than half the homeless children are below the age of 6.

Pic 3 : This picture shows the effect of poverty on people.

Negative Space

Posted by Julian Makarechi in Art - 9 - Hull on Monday, April 30, 2012 at 5:39 pm
A. Negative space is the area of the sketch or drawing that is not the thing that is being drawn. It makes up the background.

B. To find the negative space in my two projects I saw where there were no object. For the second project I used the background to figure out where the negative space was. In the stool project I used the space where there were not any stools to find the negative space.

C. It helps the artist recognize the shadow and understand the shape of the object. It makes the artist comprehend the depth of the object.

D. Negative space allows the artist to have the right amount of gap in between each object.

El secreto del Cerdo Por Julian Makarechi

Posted by Julian Makarechi in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at 10:16 am

What role does food play in our lives and in the lives of our community?

Posted by Julian Makarechi in Museum Experience - Gierke on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 2:46 pm
Food plays a huge role in our lives and effects us immensely everyday. Some people do not realize that what we eat can change our lives and even shorten it. This is why people need to give attention to the quality of food that they eat. Food is supposed to play the role of making sure we stay healthy and not decrease our life span. However this is not happening judging that 2/3 kids are obese and their life span is reduced by ten years.

For our project he had to use quotes to describe a characters development though out the story. For the written part we had to analyze at least five quotes. Then we were also assigned a a creative project to go along with it. For mine i decided to do an imovie, here it is, ENJOY :)

Posted by Julian Makarechi in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Monday, February 20, 2012 at 7:41 pm

Me llamo Padre McEnroe (Father McEnroe).

Mar Adentro- Julian Makarechi

Posted by Julian Makarechi in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Monday, December 19, 2011 at 9:47 am
Nombre: Julian Makarechi
You have been commissioned to write a review for El País about Alejandro Amenábar’s movie “Mar Adentro.” Your piece has four parts:
I)               A synopsis sometimes
II)             A presentation of the questions raised in the movie.
III)            A presentation of your position on those issues
IV)            Your opinion of the movie
Use your “Mar Adentro” and ¿Quién va a sobrevivir? vocabulary to present and defend your position on the polemic issues raised in the movie.

Tienen mucha experiencia.  Nunca he visto una película mas interesante.

Also if one of my pictures was cut off I learned to put it on the fram of the slide. In class I learned how to give criticism on someones project too.

la mascara de julian

Posted by Julian Makarechi in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 11:17 am
The purpose was to make a mask that identifies and represents us. Our essay consisted of two parts, first the things that people see right away when they see you then the more personal things people do not know about you. We had a choice to what to do with our and be creative with it. Since I am obsessed with the eagles, I made my mask an eagles! Masks are not very big in my culture, but they are in others. For example, in the Spanish culture it is important at parties and festivals.

Me gusta mucho mis nacionalidades.
