Final Stamp Design

Posted by Grace Conley in Art - Freshman · Hull · c1 Band on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at 9:02 pm

My image represents me because it shows a combination of my interests and passions and it also reflects my personal aesthetic. The words I chose to create my stamp were, adventurous, movies, flowers and simplicity.  I love all types of art, but in particular I love simple minimalistic designs, and thats what I created in my stamp. In my cut out you can see three distinct sectors, the top and middle are meant to represent a sunset, and the bottom sector features a mountain range. Inside the mountain range is a simple rose design. My image also encompasses two suns, one in the top section and one in the middle, these two suns represent my love for movies and hint at the two suns in star wars’ Tatooine. The rose represents my love for flowers and the mountain range/sunset shows my passion for adventure.

When we first started learning about negative and positive space, I was confused and i had a hard time telling the two apart, but once we started cutting and making prints on our own it all came together for me. This project in particular really helped me get the hang of negative and positive space, and I feel that that skill is represented in my work. I used this skill to separate the sectors clearly, and to create an interesting balance in my image. For example one of my suns is in the positive and one is in the negative, this affect allows the viewer to clearly see the contrast in my design. Overall I feel that this project helped train my eyes to see the difference between negative and positive space. It also helped me create a unique design that reflects my personality.

Negative/ Positive space cut out

Posted by Sanaa Scott-Wheeler in Art - Freshman · Hull · c1 Band on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at 4:00 pm

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is the blank space on any canvas. If you draw a boat on the sea you could make the boat the positive space, that is colored in and the negative space could be the sea, which would not be colored in. Or vice Versa.

B. Explain how you found negative space in your cut out?

I found negative space in my cut out by mirroring the positive space. Whenever I cut something out in red I knew it would have to be mirror on the other side in orange. The red represents positive space and Orange represents the negative space.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

When an artist sees in negative space they are seeing other possibilities for their artwork.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

Seeing in negative space adds an interesting effect on the drawing, in my opinion it adds perspective, it makes the viewer wonder what else is possible for a drawing. The contrast in the colors used does make the picture pop.

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

If you draw an airplane, when you color outside the lines, the area you are coloring is known as negative space. when you are able to see the shape of your airplane, with no lines in the middle of the drawing, but coloring all around the outside of your plane.

B. Explain how you found negative space in your cut out?

When cutting the pieces out for my cut out, I just looked for the part of the drawing where the background was colored in and where I could only see an outline of the drawing there were no details on the inside of the drawing.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

when an artist is drawing challenging parts to pictures they need to be able to get a general idea of how the shape of their drawing is going to look like, before they add detail. When you use negative space it allows the shape of our drawing to stand out and makes it easier for the artist to see what they are working with.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

I think it really depends on what the artist is drawing and how well the artist can draw. Becuase negative space is just the areas around the outside of the drawing. negative space does help with making the inside of your drawing stand out, so that way your drawing looks like an outline of a certain shape. which can mean the more you make the inside pop out, the easier it is to draw details within later. However, I think the bigger aspect on what can enhance your drawing has to do with the amount of detail you put into a picture.

Negative Space Cut Out

Posted by Juliana Long in Art - Freshman · Hull · c1 Band on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 8:40 pm

Negative space is the space in a picture that surrounds the focal point of the drawing. For example, in my cut out, the house is the focal point. The blue space surrounding the house in the left side is the negative space in the photo. To find negative space in my cut out, I first had to cut out the outline of my house. Once that was done, I had to locate the other positive space within the photo and cut around it.Seeing in negative space helps an artist because it draws the focal point of a drawing out, it makes it really pop in a sense. Seeing in negative space also enhances a drawing because of this.

Negative space cut out

Posted by Charles Langley in Art - Freshman · Hull · c1 Band on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 8:47 pm

Now this is definitely not the best example but, if I did anything good is the inside out of the tree to the outside of the tree. I needed to learn how to make sure I understand the negative space because when I was cutting this it was wrong. All the red negative space on the left should be the positive space on the right. Also negative space is the space that isn't being used. It helps a artists to use negative space because unlike me a artist has the power to see in a perspective that no one usually views in, so the artists uses that to his advantage to purposely make you see one thing rather than another. Also negative space can enhance your drawing because if you see the other drawings you can make nice art that is appealing.

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is the area that is surrounding the object focused in the drawling. Over all  the non object in an image. So whatever space makes up the objects, negative space is the space on the paper that isn't involved with the object.

B. Explain how you found negative space in your cut out?

You can find negative space in my cut out with the area that isn't making up the owl. The green on the left side is presented as the positive space while the brown in the back is the negative and same goes with the right side.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

Artist knowledge the space that isn't relevant to the object is actually as just important as the object in the image its self. Although the negative space doesn't play a dominant role in the image, it plays an important role by outlining and defining the positive space of the object the person who is viewing the image.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

Yes, art does enhance drawing. It creates almost a balanced illusion for the viewer of the positive and negative space. The negative space issued to bring out the positive so that our eyes focus on what's important to the picture.

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is an art form that uses the space in and around an object. This means either the space inside an object will either be light or dark. If it is light, then the area around it will be dark. If the object is dark, the area around it will be light. Creating two different versions of the same image that join together.

B. Explain how you found negative space in your cut out?

You can see negative space in my cut out because of the contrast of the two sides. The left side’s border is green while the inside is red. On the right side the inside is green while the outside is red. This makes them opposites from one another, meaning my image has found negative space.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It can create very cool contrast from one side of an image to another. Thus creating a unique and professional piece. Especially since it is geometric and aesthetically pleasing. With enough work you can create something amazing, and maybe even museum worthy. Or you can create nice refrigerator art.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

Yes because it makes either the inside of outside of an image pop out from the rest of the picture. It shows two different worlds of the same drawing in the same frame . Creating a one of a kind art piece that looks amazing. Both sides make the other stand out. As I hope you see in the image I created.

Negative/Positive Space cut out

In art negative space is the space around and between of an image. Negative space is the empty or open space around an image. In my cut out the tree is brown on the green background and the other half of the tree is green on the brown cut out. The negative space is the background. When you see negative space it can help you focus on one thing. Yes I do see negative space. It's because I was able to focus on thing.

Negative space and positive space cut out

Posted by Derek Jordan in Art - Freshman · Hull · c1 Band on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 9:15 am

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is the space around the subjects of an image. Negative space is basically the background of a photo.

B. Explain how you found negative space in your cut out?

My picture is an owl. One half of the owl is black with a yellow background and the the other is a yellow owl with a black background. Negative space is the background in both halves, but the two negative spaces are both different colors. This shows that negative space can be any color.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

Seeing in negative space can help an artist make the image focused on one thing. Negative space can be helpful for making the subject a specific size or distance away.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not

Yes, negative space helps bring balance to a piece of art and helps define the boundaries of positive space. The negative space makes us focus on the subject of the image, even if the majority of the picture is the background.

Maya Kohl Negative/Positive Space Cut out

Posted by Maya Kohl in Art - Freshman · Hull · c1 Band on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 9:09 am

Negative space in the empty space around an objects drawn, but not the object itself the area around it.  Negative space allows to trick the eye into seeing whats seeing an object or image there that's not drawn out. The space around it creates the outline of the object or image to let you imagine the blank space. First you would cut out the outline of a shape and every line within it. Like for example if you were going to do a donut you would cut out the circle and the inner circle. And those would in a way mirror the other side. So whats black on one side is white on the other and what's white on one side is black on the other. It helps to show the negative space by seeing the opposite color mixtures switch to show where it didn't show before. Its training your eye to switch the colored areas. It enhances the imagination to it. Based off of how you cut the negative space will determine what the viewers eye will see.
