Quarter 4 2018 Artwork Maya Kohl

Posted by Maya Kohl in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Monday, May 28, 2018 at 7:53 pm
For quarter four we were asked to complete a figure drawing, a line drawing, a digital drawing, a space drawing, a texture drawing, a value drawing and an elements drawing. For the figure drawing I had been getting really into playing frisbee, I remember when that assignment was given I had been having so much fun so I was inspired to make my figure a female frisbee player, inspired by SLA’s team itself. For the line drawing I enjoyed using shading. I chose a butterfly because I think they’re so pretty and they represent spring and I was also just so happy for it to be warm. For my digital drawing i had never done any type of art using technology in such ways so it was all pretty new to me, it took me a while to figure out how to make the website that was provided. I chose circles because they’re my favorite shape, they have no end, and I chose some of my favorite colors to overlap and create diversity within them and I really enjoyed that. For my space drawing I went simple for a depth illusion, I wanted it to look like it was going deeper and deeper, I used a sharp black so the color shading of the pencil grey would create depth. For the texture drawing I chose to draw my favorite flower, which is a rose. I loved shading the petals to give the rose more realistic aspects. And for the value drawing I chose to draw a pear including its shadows and shading, and a drawing of a dead bird I had seen on the street, I thought it looked at peace. For the bird I also enjoyed shading. For the element drawing I wanted to include some of everything we learned this year combined into an abstracted piece of work. I used color and shading and value for depth. On the side I included a texture pattern that looks like fish scales. I learned a lot this year in distinguishing what type of drawings are what I wouldn't have ever thought before there was much of s difference in texture then shading or just regular lines with a pencil. I thought the assignments were very nice. I enjoyed almost all of these assignments i felt as if i could explore while being specific.

Quarter 3 Maya Kohl's Artwork

Posted by Maya Kohl in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 11:31 am
In this unit we were asked to create a bike drawing, an optical illusion drawing, shading forms drawing, an eye drawing and a mandala with color. I like my work personally to have a lot of shading and color blending but I also prefer using pencil I think the black and white effect leaves room for imagination. With the bike drawing I wanted to make it with older types of bike because I like the vintage look it has. It reminds me of my mom’s bike.
For the optical illusions the first one I chose to do a more rounded out illusion because I thought it looked like a jewelry chain piece and that interest me. For the second one that was given as an example from the assignment but I liked how it combined this assignment and next weeks assignment which was shading forms. I enjoyed this assignments because I learned more control on how much pressure to apply on the pencil as well as making my images look somewhat 3D.
For the eye drawing I chose to do a friends. In the original assignment you were supposed to draw your own eye. I found myself always frustrated with the way my eyes fold and to draw them I felt could frustrate me more. This was my favorite assignment because I felt I could really enjoy it. To me the eye is more than just an eye.
For the mandala’s I wanted to create the design and color by the elements. The sun, water and a flower for earth. Some techniques I enjoyed using this unit were color blending and shading for a shadow effect and more ombre effect. I also enjoyed the simiatry of the mandala. I prefer pencil I find the texture to be easiest and most creative to work with in a lot of different types of art.

Maya Kohl, Quarter 2 Artwork

Posted by Maya Kohl in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Friday, January 26, 2018 at 11:26 pm
For my color blind drawings I wanted to express unique coloring for simple show drawn things, to make them stick out in purpose. My blind contour drawings were inspired wit objects or people who have more details than are shown on the surface.
For my own painting, my friend who means a lot to me told me to paint a flower, like a rose. She is a rose to me, but I wanted someone deeper and darker. To me this expresses her to with me. She is so pure like a flower, while I’m dark but still beautiful. When I choose the famous already existing painting I chose it because it screamed mystery to me, that is something that always draws me into something. I enjoyed the colorful fruit to a dull colorless man.
For the illustration to a song, book passage or a quote. I wanted to draw a metaphor to one quote I try to live by, this quote was “you have to be your strongest when you're feeling your weakest.” So in my illustration I tried to portray something beautiful and weak on the inside of a cage. The cage would be your strength to aid you when you’re weak but at the same time not letting the weak parts of you, the butterfly set free.
For my photo editing photos, I chose to make everything in a portrait mode and hiten it, I used the app given to make lines in the macaroons stand out as well as other images. I choses these images because of their difference in similarities. Three out of the five images are baked goods, while the other two are of winter. Two of my favorite things, winter and baked goods.
I wish overall with this quarter I managed my time more wisely, and spent proud time on some of these assignments more than others. I used a lot of rulers and measuring for proportion, with my man with a green apple painting I measured out some of the lines making up the back and himself. With the caged butterfly for the bars I used a ruler. Which I never do. Overall I thought this quarter was full of new experiences and creative thinking I'm proud of it.

Maya Kohl 1st Quarter Masterpieces

Posted by Maya Kohl in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Friday, November 10, 2017 at 7:19 pm
For my ceiling tile. My inspiration for this piece was my own personality. I consider myself to be sweet and colorful and to give off having a fun vibe. On top of that, I love to eat. So I thought what sweet, colorful and fun but edible? That would be Candy. I love cotton candy I love gummies and chocolate M&M’s. I choose to draw a lollipop because it is the generic sign of candy, not my favorite but it still expressed who I am. I am proud of this because of my details on my gummy bear's faces and the swirls to my lollipop. I wish I had spent more time on painting it itself so my colors could be more accurate to real M&M’s or real gummies. I spent my class time with this carefully, I think I timed things well I had spent more of my time sketching out what I wanted to express on the ceiling. I learned some techniques while using paint on such materials, and that would be to do a second coat. I outlined my drawing in black sharpie thinking that would be enough, then later discovering after added color you retrace those lines again with paint, it makes your artwork stand out more bolded. I think this was important in tying my whole piece together.

My fall wall drawing. Immediately after being assigned the fall wall drawing, I thought pumpkins. To me, if fall had a matching object to go with it it would be a pumpkin. I am proud of this work because I used well shading on my tree trying to go from light to dark purple. I used purple on my tree because it is the opposite color of orange, my pumpkin is orange and I used purple as an effect to make the pumpkin stick out. Pumpkins mean more to me than most my family always had a pumpkin carving party they went to at this place called the spooky garden, it is always hosted by some dear family friends. Each year people in my neighborhoods bring their kids to carve pumpkins along with food. It's quite nice, everyone does it together. At this get together the children; most younger then me a few my age go to play in the newly fallen leaves that's why I incorporated a tree with leaves falling. I also included the foxes because down where my grandparents are they have foxes running about their yard they live near the woods. I spent my class time on a different drawing I did not use also involving the centerpiece which was a pumpkin. I spent a lot more time at home trying to figure out a good way to draw a welcoming looking pumpkin for this project, I am proud most of the colors and the way they pour into one another. A good strategy I learned was to blend colors you can overlap and lightly shade with your pencil as well as your finger, it creates a more gentle look.

For my self-portrait I was inspired by this picture because I remember taking this selfie when I was happy, so drawing it reminded me of this happy day. I am extremely proud of my self-portrait because it actually turned out looking like me. I was inspired to do this one because it was from a different angle, an angle above me rather than in front or below me. That mattered because my eyes were interesting and it was good for detail in the drawing. I also learned that shading with your fingers works well to accentuate shadows and body creases, I believe really contrasts well. I wish I had more time to shade in with colors to make it look more realistic. As well as some shading for my background. I did not spend any time in class working on this portrait because I found working on my previous work of artists working at home gave me better results in my artwork.

Lead Print/Matt

Posted by Maya Kohl in Art - Freshman · Hull · c1 Band on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at 12:20 pm
My element is Lead, Pb. the atomic number is 82. My element is used for many things, it had been used in pencils and in water pipes. It is poison to be digested. The history of lead goes way back, it is unknown who discovered lead but it was used in things like makeup for Queen Elizabeth. It was a popular fashion in the 16th and 17th centuries it was called "whiteface" or "mask of the youth" that made your face the desired color of the time, but since it was poisonous it was not a trend that lasted very long.
My inspiration for my print come from another time period where ancient rome in the 18 century put lead into wine to make it sweeter but ended up killed them. I thought drawing wine glasses in celebration, while packets of lead were poured into the glasses would be a good representation.
The process of making this print was first sketching many ideas of how I wanted lead to be represented. I them took sketch paper and traced my normal final sketch. With the final sketch on sketch paper I drew it onto the foam used to print my form, I had to make sure it was backwards so that when I printed it it wouldn't be backwards. The we took pain cover roller and put paint on it, and printed it. We made sure it was 4 by 6 inches as well to fit perfectly in a 6 by 8 matt frame.
If I were to do this project again I would make my lines on the foam bolder so they were more distinct when I put pain on them. Other then that I am proud of my work. I would also make the element symbol more incorporated in my wine glasses.

For this art project we started by making a list of words that described yourself. From this list you were to pick your top three and create symbols for each word. With each symbol we made it into one. This one symbol representing the top three words would be drawn out to perfection, and cut out into positive space of construction paper. Later we will carve out symbol into foam and we will be making prints with it, like a stamp.
I create this symbol to represent that I am musical, loving and adventurous. The outer shape of this symbol creates a heart for loving with the well know musical symbol the treble clef. I put it upside down to create the heart effect look. To represent adventurous I have tringle coming from one side of the heart to be like mountains. I had tried some more detailed looks like sheet music for a cut out but this is going to be made into a stamp so it needed to be more simple. So I tried more realistic images to put together but soon realized it is what symbol I believe represents my word. So it became easier to express my final sketch.
These words symbolize me because I love to be on edge and have fun being outgoing. I have been involved with music my whole life and with most songs I can express a part of myself or I can understand the lyrics. I have a lot of love and care my friends and family and pets. I would do anything I could to help a friend. So I consider myself loving.
This project was a challenge becasue of how limited it was, being able to express these words in our own symbols is sluc a creative thing with so many options, so when I know it will be hard to carve into foam later I try not to make it so hard. So having to not go into as much detail as I would like to in my symbol was hard. I also found it a challenged cutting out my treble clef to create the negative space effect, becasue normally in music it's drawn a line so making it bubble bold was a challenge with all the swirls. By making it bolder made it easier to see the positive and negative space. It was important to show inside the swirls of the treble clef to show the space. without it it wouldn't correct.

Maya Kohl Negative/Positive Space Cut out

Posted by Maya Kohl in Art - Freshman · Hull · c1 Band on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 9:09 am

Negative space in the empty space around an objects drawn, but not the object itself the area around it.  Negative space allows to trick the eye into seeing whats seeing an object or image there that's not drawn out. The space around it creates the outline of the object or image to let you imagine the blank space. First you would cut out the outline of a shape and every line within it. Like for example if you were going to do a donut you would cut out the circle and the inner circle. And those would in a way mirror the other side. So whats black on one side is white on the other and what's white on one side is black on the other. It helps to show the negative space by seeing the opposite color mixtures switch to show where it didn't show before. Its training your eye to switch the colored areas. It enhances the imagination to it. Based off of how you cut the negative space will determine what the viewers eye will see.

Art Blog and Artist Statement Maya Kohl

Posted by Maya Kohl in Art - Freshman · Hull · c1 Band on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 8:55 am

Printmaking originated in China, when they would paint on paper a symbol or text to create a message. They did it to express a belief in the religion. Later became popular in relief printmaking in Europe. In Europe they became very advance with paper mills and printing other religions symbols. It was a discovery around the 15th century. The whole process of printmaking was from the East. The first original printing stamp invention was cut steel and brands, they used this to mark animals or prosteners. Later in the 15th century books were created on woodblocks, in Germany. In Japan in the 18th century, it became know from china, so the Japanese created colors in printmaking. The imagery and colors are still today used in the trending fashions and books. Years later it became very successful because it developed into an equally aesthetic and commercial process printmaking became widespread with advanced ink in 1960. It was very popular around the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War, because they printed out banners and poster to express peace.

Relief printing is when there is ink applied to a woodcut or metal carved plate. So when the surface face is placed on paper the area cut into the plate will show up. Other printmaking could simply be drawing, or using paint to fill in the empty places cut out. Or there is intaglio, which is when an object is engraved with design prints. There are prints like lithography where the ink is placed on a surface where it’s needed and placed carefully onto one specific area and rolled over or pushed into the paper, and when peeling it off leave the ink where it was placed. Another type of printing would be serigraphy which is when ink is forced through a silk screening to create a design. One more example of printmaking is monoprinting that's when there are specific lines that can only be drawn one and printed down carefully. But unlike most printmaking this one has many techniques to how this could be done.

This flower shows a serigraphy type print. Its layered colors to blend together to make a whole print. I find this serigraphy printed print artistically interesting because of how many layers it took to complete something so realistic. I think it shows a impressive job at matching opposite colors to make the main focus really pop. I see texture in the petals within the mixture of coloring and middle core of the flower. There isn't similarly in the flowers petals but in the shape I see it so it fills out the whole canvas which is pleasing to the eye. I noticed each line drawn is not distinct they bleed into other colors to make it more realistic and I wonder how they did that because it was a print so they must of layered the ink patterns very carefully.

I am who i am pt2

I learned that I needed to make both sides more symmetrical with color and filling space. I decided to change my slides pictures. I originally had two grey scaled pictures on the right side but that looked of wit my back and white theme so I took those off and made it more evenly contrasted throughout the whole slide. I also changed the font of "i am who I am" to be more fancy and curved to match the curves with the music notes and I wanted the work "dliysxea" to be really simple and I made it going up and down though the other text to express it applies an important part to me. I'm glad I researched just so I had more knowledge on what would catch a outside person's eye the most and really sell it. It's so important to research just to be more prepared in general.

My obsessions are a of part of me. The color represents the two sides of me the dark and light, black and white.  First i thought to myself what i love to do that i actually do all the time. By that i mean i like to hike but i barely ever hike. In my slide i have pictures of makeup brushes. This is to cover up the parts of me i'm not at ease with. Next to the bushes i have a clothing rack i love clothing i have a endless amount i love how it lets me express myself and my outfit can match my emotions and mood. They let me feel safe beyond my bedroom. It's my own suit of armor my protecter against haters, and i feel safe. I consider my social media to by my solders. I fight my angels and my enemies on it in silence. On the left one of my deepest fears and weaknesses. I have a mental disability called dyslexia, technically it's not a disability but everyone treats it like a disability so i am starting to believe it is. Its one of my biggest insecurities. You'll see in the middle i have a treble clef which is used in music. Music is in the middle because it's there it matches my moddss and i feel a connection. I love to be involved with music i could not live with it. When i'm happy i listen to the sound, when i'm sad i understand the lyrics. When i can't seem to find a song to make me feel myself, i'll make my own music and sing. Thats why im in choir. My fears are my addiction and my fears make up me.

Maya Kohl Home Network

Posted by Maya Kohl in Technology - Freshman · Hull · c2 Band on Friday, October 14, 2016 at 9:55 am

1) My networks are four phones, five computers and two ipads.

2) The network is very intricate and complicated, what i learned from it is that nothing is gone. If you take a picture you didn’t mean to take or didn’t like and delete it its not deleted. It’s gone from your reach but it’s still on the internet, it will be forever. So i learned to remember this and be safe with it.

3) One thing to know about having home network is that you should write down all your passwords on actual paper, and put it somewhere very safe like a bank account. I said actual paper, because a picture is on the internet. It could go missing very easy, and all your information could be gone and/or unsafe to public. People could log into your accounts and it could escalate badly.
