Big things

Posted by Toni Marshall in Advanced Art - Hull on Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 2:36 pm

This quarter in art I decided to paint on the ceiling tiles. I am not sure exactly why I wanted to do it to begin with but as I continued to create blue prints and things like that I noticed that I just wanted to leave an imprint in the school before I graduated next near. By doing so I wanted to show what SLA means to me by painting slogans and things such as that. I cannot draw very well but I can express myself by painting and using words.
My first process was drawing stuff that didn't divide the classes but bought them closer together. As people realized what I started people who were also in art wanted to join in. By seeing that it made me smile because I did my purpose, I left a footprint in the school for how I want people to feel about each other. I do not if I will continue the project for the next two quarters I plan on starting something else.

My other part of this quarter I remolded a ring my ring made with her new jewelry labeled called Purpose. The ring is made out of broken glass that was shaved down for safety and three nails that were shaved down as well, but it has a dangerous look. I also used wire and a cut up piece of wine cork that made the circle shape, which you put your ringer through. I love this piece and always wanted to do something with broken glass so I did so.

Quarter two- Art Creations

Posted by Brittany Riggins in Advanced Art - Hull on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 8:48 am

This Quarter in art class things got a little more advanced we where now taking the basic tools that we have learned in the previous year and applying them to everything we did this, quarter, the list of projects we were assigned to do were, a clear object, a 3D object and to take 200 photos on our own and edit 5 of those photos. The first thing I worked on in the class was the clear object, in quarter 1 we were asked to do something very similar and this is why this was the easiest of the projects to do. "clear object" Starting the clear object was easy Mrs. Hull provided to us a series of clear objects for us to.choose from and I chose something that looked like an hour glass, that tools that I choose to use for this project is a piece of charcol and a 24x36 piece of white construction paper. I started by shading the background with the charcol and making sure it is all evenly spread out. I then started next with making the body part of the glass and shaping a reshaping and making sure that it is as even as possible the top part of the clear object was the most, difficult part because you had to show the object as if it were upright and also evenly circled at the top and at the bottom. Most of my inspiration for this project has been just the fact that I love shapes and objects that have a flow feeling and looking at the picture and I also like the fact that it seemed very easy for me to do. I liked this project because it was easy to. "Edited pictures" I loved this assiignment because it allowed us to use our creative sides we had to take pictures of whatever we like and then edit five of those pictures, the pictures I chose were of my niece that represents life in my eyes and the other inspiration came from fun, I am a teenager and at this point in my life I think fun is a very important attribute to maintain in your life. This assignment was not difficult because the program you have to uae in order to edit pictures is called photoshop and because I have used this before it was fairly easy. "Map of Pennsylvania" My map of pennsylvania was by far my favorite project to do becaise it was all my idea and what I wanted to do my inspiration for this project was my state of course, the tools that I used to complete these projects were construction paper and me I got cutting and pasting and moving things around and that is when I decided what I was making. I love the way my project turned out but I wish I could have completed it faster it took up alot of my class periods to make but I am still proud of the overall project.

200 Photos with Photoshop Edits

Posted by Anonymous in Advanced Art - Hull on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 12:23 am

Taken with the Camera from School with Kyla Carden.

With the program Photoshop I was able to alter the photos I took with the camera I got from school. I didn't really know how to use Photoshop so I played around with it for an hour just seeing what different tools do. It didn't take that long to edit the photos the only thing was the files were so big that SLATE didn't have the capacity to handle the data. So I converted the photos from DSJ. to JPEG.

With the first photo that shows my friends and I used the Hue/Saturation filter that added a sort of warmth to the photo. It also added added a cool contrast to the outer layer of our bodies.

The second photo is a photo of my friends that was taken for yearbook, but I decided to use it as one of the photos in photoshop. I messed around with the Hue/Saturation filter again, but didn't go too overboard with as I did the first time.

The third photo is a picture of my friend's Jareese, Sade, and Kyla at lunch. I liked the way the picture came out so I didn't want to do change it too much. I decided to just emphasize some of the colors in the photo. So I exaggerated the yellow and blues in the photo and it brought a glaze over the picture.

The fourth photo I took in my basement and I just made the temperature cooler to bring out the blue in the photo. I also added a little artistic stroke effect and made the picture brighter to make it look like I was glowing.

The last photo I took in class and I just wanted to change it to black and white. I also added the Saturation effect to make the picture a little lighter.

Quarter 2: 5 Photos

Posted by Paige Wayman in Advanced Art - Hull on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 12:00 am

5 photos:

I chose these 5 photos because I thought they were the best out of all of the 200 photos. I thought my lighting was good, my angle was good, I thought where I took the picture made it more admirable.

Quarter 2: CLEAR OBJECT

Posted by Paige Wayman in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, January 27, 2012 at 11:56 pm

Clear object:

This was the same assignment as last quarter accept this clear object had to be bigger than the last. For this clear object I chose to do a clear vase because I wanted to mix it up a bit to see what I was cable of doing.

I thought the vase was harder than the regular glass because making the actual vase shape was difficult, because a vase shape is awkward. The outline is straight but yet there’s that little curve that I always got wrong. Also the vase had two circles at the bottom of it so I tried to separate one circle from the other so it didn’t look like 2 random circles in a vase. To make the picture come alive I also tried to add white in the picture so it would look like the sun is reflecting on the object, and would make it look like actual glass.

From my current work I believe the last clear object was easier, because I didn’t have to outline the exotic shape of a vase. But overall I am still proud of my work.

Quarter 2: Edit Photos

Posted by Paige Wayman in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, January 27, 2012 at 11:53 pm

Edit Photos:

I chose to edit these photos because I thought out of all of my photos these were the ones that needed work. The pictures that I took were wonderful, but some of them were to dark to even see that it was a photo so I decided to put them into photo booth and see what I could do.

As I edited the photos I realized there were a lot you could work with, but I pretty much just focused on making the photos look like actual pictures. And on some I just changed the format of the photo, which I realized was enough to make it look like the way I wanted it to.

From my current experience of working with photo shop, I believe I was ok with it, but now I realized that you can do a lot more on photo shop than just changing the size of the photo. The hardest part about this assignment was figuring out how I should make the photo, because there were so many things I could do with the picture.

QUARTER 2: 2D PICTURE

Posted by Paige Wayman in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, January 27, 2012 at 11:46 pm

The ocean:

I chose to draw the ocean because I like the way the blues would go from lights to darks and darks to lights. It looked like a fun challenge that I was really excited to do.

Throughout this project I used pastels, because I figured that it would be easier to blend the colors and create nice fades. But as you can see for the top layer of the ocean I chose to do a dark blue that would separate the surface of the water from the bottom of the ocean. To separate both of the blues I added white to the top layer to make it look like the reflection from the sun, and the bottom I just did a plane, simple light blue, which I blended with a little bit of green. As I was going along doing this project instead of just doing a stroke and rubbing all the colors together, I pretty much treated the pastel as a marker and began filling in any white spots as much as I could. And for the bottom of the paper and for the white I used a technique called cross checks I believe its called which would make the picture look a little uneven so it would look more realistic.

From my current work I believe my progress has grown. I believe I have learned a lot more about fading objects, and blending colors together. The most challenging part about this project was making the ocean look real. I really wanted the ocean to pop out of the picture, which was a very difficult thing to do.

"Copy A Master" Johniera's Version

Copy A Master

Artist Statement for "Copy A Master" Project

I choose a simple art piece that was created that I found to be very interesting. Here is the link to the original piece. Clearly the original was made with water based paints, however in order to create my copy I choose to use colored charcoal pastels. This piece was hard to actually replicate so I simply just chosen to put my own twist on it all.

I started with the swirls of blues. I figured if nothing else the swirls should be the distinctive piece that stays the same. I then followed with the white piece of charcoal pastel to lighten up the piece. The colors of the piece are really bright so white always would tone those colors down. I for the most part chose to use my hands and cotton balls to make smear/smudged effects to piece. I seen it as a repeat of the original pieces's strokes that have been lead into the other colors of piece. It reminded me of it by doing so with my piece. I also chose to use different colors outside of the original piece as well. The hot pink and baby blue for example. I wanted the piece to be brighten up so adding those colors did that justice.

Overall, I am content with the replica of the "Master's" piece and made sure that I added my own twist to make it my very own.

Edit Photos

Artist Statement for Edited Pictures

Playing with Photoshop, I learned to do some neat things. With each of the photos I have edited I created a unique creation. Some were simple such as my edited Birthday Cake that just displayed an explosion with the balloon holder top center piece and the edited picture I have of an artwork made from one of my peers here at SLA.    There were photos, however that I did completely change the manner of how they look. For each picture I had in mind of what I wanted to do to change it digitally for the better look of it. The tricky part was to actually make that happen with this application.

As shown with each of the edited pictures, what I had in mind was actually succeeded. The functions of photoshop can be hard to find at first but once you find something that you need you have found the rest in a sense.

The Five Photos I have Edited are:

A Photo of Myself, Two Art Pieces made from my Peers at SLA, An Exit Sign at SLA, and Birthday Cake that I've Personally Made.

For the photo of myself, the original photo was a picture I'd taken of myself wearing red lipstick. I have taken the neon glow function on Photoshop to create an alien looking effect on the photo. I then took pink to go over the shape of my lips and the eraser tools to put a dot in the pupils of my eyes.

For the two art pieces that were made from my peers, I choose to make them pop with some more color then the original photo had. For the unique snake looking photo I changed the yellow background to a hot pink and made the black strokes to make the snake bright lime green. For the mosaic piece of art that was created, I chose to make the background of that grain like how televisions go when the alerts come on with the different colors, I also decided to brighten the photo and have a painted style stroke to the actual mosaic piece. It came out really nice and I must say these two were my favorite to edit because they fit my personality so well. They're both simple in a way but very noticeable.

I also have taken a picture of a exit sign at my school  and edited it in Photoshop. This was actually the first photo I played around with so the product was just that. I played around with the different filters on photoshop and this is how it came out and about.

Lastly, with the photo of the birthday cake I have made, that has been edited in Photoshop I actually sat and pondered how I would digitally change this photo. I didn't necessarily know how I exactly was going to do this but then I realized how the cake in the original photo has the top center piece that looks like fireworks, so for the editing I choose to give it a lightening and glow affect to make the top center piece look like an explosion and it actually did come out looking like that. That was great.

Internet Sculpture

I found a website that created tulips, and I made a Paper version of that.

Artist Statement for Paper Tulips

Finding an internet sculpture to create was a bit challenging for me. There are a countless amount of projects one can get themselves into. However with much research I found myself intrigued with a particular website that make tulips. I decided to create my own twist to the project.

For the paper tulips I have created, I used colored construction paper, (That are the colors of yellow, blue, dark pink, light pink, and green.) scissors, and tape. In order to make these tulips I simply cut out a tracing of my hand and folded it into a shape of a circle. Then with the fingers that are the petals of the tulips,  I brought them down and out and curled them with the scissors and taped them to hold. After the petals were done I decided to make the stem with green construction paper. I cut the construction paper in fourths and rolled the fourth up into a cylinder. Then I placed it inside of the petals and voilá there goes a tulip. I decided to make half of a dozen and place them in a vase that was made in ceramics class by one of my peers at SLA. (As shown in photo.)

Many people have vases full of flowers in their home. I thought that coming across this project and making it seem as if they were real was really cool. Especially doing it in a manner of paper. I loved how all it took for me to make a tulip was literally some construction paper, scissors, and tape. This was a very neat project and I am very happy that I took the time to actually make these tulips.
