Glass Vase

Artist Statement for Large Clear Object

A more grandiose size of the clear object drawing I made from First Quarter, I decided to use similar methods to get to the product I have today. Again, the glass vase was more complex then what I believed it was. However, I did manage to make the glass vase appear to be clear on paper.

I used a very particular method of staring at the glass vase for several  minutes.  Then using the black charcoal to make an outline of what I've seen and smearing it with tissue to have a smudge affect. With shading, darkening spaces and erasing countless amounts of times I then found the perfect blend of color for the object to come out to appear as if it was clear. I did bump into some barriers while working on it such as the proportion. I managed to fix that by simply turning the paper around and making the one side the top of the vase and the other the bottom. As seen with the photo taken of the glass vase, it is apparent that the top is bigger than the bottom. Which would make sense looking at the vase at a eye level.

I've grown to be very content with the clear vase I have created on paper. The amount of time put into making the vase appear to be clear on paper shows throughout this piece of art and I am happy for that.

QUARTER 2 ART PROJECTS :)

Posted by Samantha Boyd in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, January 27, 2012 at 5:33 pm

  • During quarter 2 we did a number of things. We took the small glass objects that we drew 1 quarter and turned them into 24x36” drawings. We used Charcoal or pastels we also had to fill the paper. So i also tried to fill the paper like i was supposed to. i used Charcoal instead of pastels because i love the way Charcoal looks on the white paper once the picture is finished. Next we had to choose a sculpture of the internet and redraw it so i love the Peace Love and Happens signs because of what it means. so i looked for a nice picture of that and found a students from a lower grade than me in a different state and thought it was cool and choose to complete that drawing. Next we had to take 200 pictures of things that we liked and me being me i love me so most of my pictures are of me. i took these pictures and edited them on photo shop. i used letters hearts and stars and color change. i also used a web site called pizap where you can combine pictures and do the same things as photo shop i just used two different ways to create and edit my pictures. we also had to create Internet Sculptures so i found out that i can take the plain glass cups and wine glasses at home and turn them into something that is pretty fun and cool to drink out of. Now my glasses were made at home and not at school because i had the help of my god mom. In order for this to work we had to by special paint called Pebeo ceramic brilliant glossy paint. after we painted the glasses we had to let them sit out for 24hr and the once they dyed we had to but them in the over for like a half an our that way the paint can bake into the glass and when we drink out of the glass the paint wont come off. (this is a very dangerous art project so please have adult help)

Clear Object

Posted by Tenzin Ngawang in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 12:03 pm

For the Clear Object drawing, I didn't have much trouble because I already did it in first quarter. I think I've excelled at drawing clear object. Especially, shading because when I did the clear object in first quarter, I had difficulty shading cause whenever I did one part of the shading, it never look exactly like the object that was infront of me. I also realized that when I'm drawing clear object, I have to stay at one place with specific lighting because if I left my drawing undone and continued the next class, it makes a huge difference with shading.

This is something similar to what we did in the first quarter, except on a much bigger scale. The paper is 24x36", the drawing itself is roughly 8x18. We were supposed to fill the paper, but after I had started I liked the direction I was heading too much and just kept going.

Q1: Figure and Clear Object Drawing

Posted by Kyla Carden in Advanced Art - Hull on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 10:35 am

Honestly, I create the pieces I do because they are assigned to me. Although, my goals are not assigned, I’ve set my own. My goals and aspirations for this class are to just enhance my drawing and creating skills. I would like to be able to draw more precisely and with more accuracy than I do now. Another goal is to change my view of art. I see it as a class but I don’t equate it to my other classes, which isn’t fair. I know Ms. Hull takes Art seriously as my teacher and I should do the same as a student. I want to turn in all my assignments on time and treat art like a main course. Art was never my favorite subject but I know that if I indulge myself into the class and the work, it could be something I’d enjoy.

Before I make any decisions when I’m working I consult the Art teacher or the assistant teacher. Since they are experienced they know how to manipulate my ideas to make them better and greater than the ideas I originally had. Many of the times the art teacher gives us the material to use but there are many ways to use one single material/tool. Since I’m a beginner many of the techniques are taught then assigned to us so we can practice and perfect them. Many of my own techniques are simple. In the end, I’m just doing as best as I can to make a replica on paper of what I’m seeing in real life.

My latest piece of work was the clear object drawing. If you look at my first figure drawing and compare it to the clear object drawing you can see that effort put into them is completely different. During the first drawing I was worried about how I didn’t like art but in the second one I didn’t care about that, I just drew the object to the best of my ability. I’m proud of my second piece because it was the second real piece of art I’ve constructed. I also love it because of the tool we used which was charcoal. I enjoyed constructing this so much because when working with charcoal I’m reminded that in the beginning things may look thick, dark, and unable to be erased but with a gentle brush over it, it can change into something much more pleasant.

Clear Object Q1

Posted by Tyrone Kidd in Advanced Art - Hull on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at 11:11 pm

I sketched this Beer mug, because I figured it would be easy. Of course as  Ms Hull always says " I will never give you easy work. They are all hard". How ever  while I was drawing this mug I feel like I tried a tab bit to hard. To me this looks like a "blue print" of how its suppose to look instead of the actual product. In the future, I would like to broaden my knowledge on perfecting an object to look exactly the way it does.

This was my favorite work of mine so far this quarter. It still isn't amazing, but I really liked seeing something that only I could see. Everyone can look at a beaker, but because of the lighting everyone sees it differently. I really liked using the charcoal, however I tried to color in the lighting with a white crayon, it just made the charcoal all waxy and then I couldn't change it. Unlike my last project I think I did a really good of drawing what I saw. Also, Emma helped me get my head on about how I should do this.

Q1 Art

Posted by Toni Marshall in Advanced Art - Hull on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 8:42 pm

This quarter in art I think I have been able to identify the things I need to improve on as well as have improved on since last year. Normally I would just take the easy way on or do what I am used to in order to get the project done and enjoy at the same time. My original idea was to write poems instead of draw because I was caught in my comfort zone. Ms.Hull encouraged me to try and get better at drawing. Ms.Hull said to me "I can teach you how to draw." I have gained the patience and understanding on what shadowing as well as 3d objects look like.

My first drawing was the first body portrait of Sammy. I do not have a picture because it was destroyed in the hallway. I think that my portrait was better last year because of the angle I was standing at last year. It was a front view of my model. I had to draw the side of her which was a challenge. I wish I had a visual to show the difference between last years to this years. I always enjoy doing the full body portraits because it tests my creativity and my ability to tackle the project accurately.  The second assignment of the quarter was drawing a clear object such as glass or bottle. I think this os the assignment that gives me the most trouble i redid my object three times. I didn't want to look at the tutorial that was provided for us because it would put a damper on my creative thought process and I would try to duplicate what was shown to me, not what I actually see.I enjoyed this quarter once again it is always a enjoyment learning new techniques.
