Abstract:

My goal for the capstone was to pick 3-5 diseases that I wanted to go in depth with. The diseases had to be common and something that I can acquire a lot of information about. My final product is this website/blog. This blog includes everything that I have learned through out my research. It is all facts. The diseases that I studied are Diabetes, Tuberculosis, Schizophrenia, and HIV/AIDs. Each site includes statistics, what it is/what it does to the patient, whether it is curable or not, what can a person do to prevent it, its' symptoms, current researches, caring tips, what that person's diet should look like, and whether it is contagious or not, etc.

How to Lie: Chapter 7 to Chapter 10 (End of the book)

For the last four chapters, we discussed more ways of deception and also how to deal with those deceptions. Chapter 7 was about finding statistics for something, but then actually using a statistic from something else, though none of it is actually wrong. Chapter 8 was about cause and effect and whether cause and effect can be reversed. Chapter 9 was about using visual diagrams, showing majorities, but not paying attention to the actual numbers. Chapter 10 is about how to deal with all of the misleading statistics and realizing what is wrong or missing.

Yo quiso a matar a ella.

Deh & Dal

Posted by Tenzin Ngawang in Science and Society - Best on Friday, January 25, 2013 at 11:32 am
Recipe & Analysis:

Ingredients:

White Rice

Red Lentil

Water

Tomatoes

Onions

Salt

Vegetable Oil

Indian Masala (spices)

Hand full of Parsley

Tumeric powder

Masala

Prior Steps:

Chop 2 red onions and 3 tomatoes

Put the 1 and a half cup of red lentil in a container

Wash red lentil until the water comes out clear

Steps:

Put 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a pressure cooker

Heat it on the stove for about 30 seconds

Put the diced onions into the oil

Put in 1/2 teaspoon of tumeric powder and 3/4 teaspoon of masala

Stir the goods.

Put in the chopped tomatoes & give it a good stir

Wait for the onions and tomatoes to be soft and mushy

Then add the 1 and a half a cup of Red lentil

Give it another stir

Add 6 cups of water.

Stir again and while you stir, add 3 teaspoons of salt.

Analysis:

Living in India for the majority of my life, I have grown accustomed to the things they eat, the way they cook and their life styles. I can remember up to 3rd grade and I remember eating rice and dal in our hostel room. Our home mother would make 15 liters worth of dal for the 40 students that live in the hostel. Dal is lentil soup in hindi. It is very popular in India. It is nutritious as well. I remember my house mother use to always tell me drinking dal would make you taller. I have always lived by these phrases of advice.

Dal, or should I say, lentil soup, can be made out of different types of lentil. There are lentil beans, red lentil, yellow lentil, all sorts of variety. Everything in the soup is whole food, there is no processed food. A traditional dal would include, onions, tomatoes, lentil beans, salt, tumeric powder, vegetable oil and masala of your choice. You can choose to avoid masala but I wouldn’t recommended it because it would lose the generic taste. Lentil contains protein (which makes you grow, more so body development), vitamin B and dietary fibers. The best thing about lentil soup is that it doesn’t have as many calories as you would think it has when you eat it.

For my dish, I decided to put in parsley to mix with my soup (it’s sort of my dad’s idea really.. but we have been doing that for awhile and we really like it). Parsley is basically a herb that many people use as topping or as decorations for their dish. It contains a lot of amazing vitamins such as vitamin A, C and K. These vitamins are good for

Reflection:

I have realized that in United States, junk food and processed food are ubiquitous, I can find them almost every corner of the nation. Consuming processed food is much more convenient than making something out of scratch. If one was to run out of things in the refrigerator, one can just simply walk around the block and end up at McDonald restaurant or Dunkin Donuts. I think one of the main factors of obesity and the poor food system is due to lack of government care. If the government cared enough to think about the citizens before businesses, they can easily turn down these businesses, not even that, just lessening the amount of fast food restaurants in general can reduce the obesity level. More and more people would be cooking in their houses rather than being lazy and grabbing a fast food product.  Another thing is reducing the prices of organic food, with the government’s power, I’m pretty sure they can make that happen. Everyone cares for themselves or their children and they would want the best for their family but with the amount of money they carry in their pockets will limit what they can get and cannot.

For me personally, I have banned soft drinks, fast food, any meat in general and juice from my diet after this unit. I have successfully been a vegetarian for a whole week now and I’m planning to continue to do so. After watching those clips in class, I could not bare to see the cruelty that these animals face. I think I’m good with vegetables. My mom has been vegetarian for 7 years now and she is supportive about me excluding meat out of my diet. I am not sure if I will last but I’m determined and hopefully it lasts more than a month. I love beans so that’s my source of protein, instead of meat.

¿Qué es la vida?

Posted by Tenzin Ngawang on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 10:29 am

(If I were in his place…)

¡Hola! Me llamo Tenzin Ngawang.
Aunque mis hermanos me molestan.

What If? US History Q4 - Tenzin Ngawang

Posted by Tenzin Ngawang in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, June 1, 2012 at 9:52 am
My point of divergence was governor Alfred E. Smith from New York winning the 1928 presidential election instead of Pres. Herbert Hoover. President Franklin D. Roosevelt blamed Pres. Herbert Hoover for starting the great depression and therefore, I chose this as my point of divergence. I liked this project because you could actually choose any topic you want and you get to change something small that twisted everything. I chose this topic because I wanted to know more about the Great Depression because I don't recall myself learning about that time period in any of my classes. I just heard it was a really mournful time period in US History. I researched and learned that Herbert Hoover was the protagonist, he was the president during great depression and he was blamed for it. So I asked the question, what if the presidential candidate who was running against him during the previous election, would America had to suffer the great depression time period. The other candidate was either Alfred Smith or Calvin Coolidge and I realized that Calvin Coolidge withdrew himself from running as a president after his son's death. I debated whether to chose Calvin Coolidge rather than Alfred E Smith multiple times as my point of Divergence because Calvin Coolidge was an interesting character. Therefore, if I were to do this project again, I'd choose Calvin Coolidge as the president during the great depression era. The most challenging part of the project was the final product, I didn't know what to put and how 2012 would look like because of my point of divergence. The most interesting that I came across through my research was the great depression occurred a decade after the roaring 1920s. Roaring twenties was a time period when America was on the top of the world, America was known as the richest country in the world. However, a decade after, Americans were loosing job, they couldn't afford anything. The unemployment rates increased up to 25 percent, which is a lot, millions of citizens were losing their job.

  • Who you spoke with and why you chose that partner

    - I spoke with multiple people but unfortunately, unable to screenshot our conversation because I kept on closing my laptop and when I opened it, it'd say error. However, the last conversation I had was with Kathlyn D. from Spain.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

    - I learned that she was 16 years old and that her friends went to the huge protest that was organized for schooling. She couldn't go because her parents didn't allow her to. However, they all got the day off from school.
  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goals?
    - I was able to keep our conversation going and I understood what she was saying. I was able to reply fast without using translator. I learned a lot of basic words and how to question a matter.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations? What specifically to you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

    - I think keeping the conversation going went well. I knew how to question when she said something weird, without sounding like a newbie. I tried to sound as if I was familiar with the language by fixing my grammars etc.

  • Who you spoke with and why you chose that partner

    - I spoke with Manuel. He was fluent at spanish, he was the one who decided to chat with me and he was willing to help me.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

    - I learned a lot about him because he was describing how he looked like and such. I learned that he likes to hang out with his friends, watch movies etc. I may have included it in the audio. For the audio, I didn't include the whole thing because originally, it was about 45 minutes and I had to cut it down to 5 minutes.

      • Who you spoke with and why you chose that partner

        - I spoke with two people but I forgot to screenshot my other chat because I accidentally quitted out of it. I had a nice long conversation with Rafael from Brazil in spanish. He was helping me a lot too but anyway, the chat that I've screenshot is the one below. His name is Vidal and he was from Venezuela.

      • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

        - I learned that he doesn't like running and he loves walking because he thinks it's relaxing.. I also learned that he likes learning new languages, he is currently learning japanese. I learned a couple of new words,

      • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goals?

        - Last week, I posted my blogpost saying I wanted to have an conversation and record it but I wasn't able to do that but I skimmed through sharedtalk. I really liked how you get to meet new people and they were really friendly. So I chose to chat with them and they helped me with asking questions and awkward phrasings.

      • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations? What specifically to you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

        - I tried to keep my conversation going and for some part, I didn't know what else to ask because I ran out of questions to ask. Therefore, for next week, I'm definitely going to have a list of questions that I'd ask before talking to someone.

    • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

      - I spoke with my friend, Andora Myftaraj because she is a native spanish speaker and she is from Albania. I chose her for this assignment because we never talked in spanish before even when she speaks fluent spanish!

    • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

      - I didn't learn anything about her per se because we did most of the things together this weekend. What I learned from her was that when you're talking in spanish, you really have to try and that avoiding google translators really helps and enables you to realize how much you really know.

    • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

      -
My personal goal was to keep a conversation going. I think I tried my best to keep that conversation because I asked as many questions as I could think of during that time. My other personal goal was to have a better pronunciation but that didn't happen because my conversation was on iChat. However, that's definitely going to be my next personal goal.

    • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

      - I think I did well at asking questions like I said earlier and I believe I tried my best at using the right 'ser' form at points, like we've learned in earlier quarter. I also think I did well at understanding and writing even without using translator or wordreference.

    • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

      - I realized after that when asking question, I forgot to put the upside down question in the front, like we usually do in class. After the talk, my friend and I started talking in english; reflecting on my way of speaking spanish and she said that some of the things I said were a little awkward but overall was good.

    Goals para Proyecto de Conversación

Posted by Tenzin Ngawang in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Monday, April 16, 2012 at 8:40 am
My goal for the conversations in general would be to speak a little more fluently and understand how a native speaker usually speaks and how to keep up with the conversation. I have a problem with pronunciation and that is also one of my goal.

I have couple of spanish friends who speak spanish fluently and I'm going to have little chat with them.

    Oklahoma, Lead Contamination

Posted by Tenzin Ngawang in American History - Laufenberg on Monday, March 26, 2012 at 1:13 pm

    a. What went well?
    - We all worked together and we communicated well. Even when we were stressed with other class' benchmark projects, we still managed to do our own part of the work done.
    b. What did not?
    - I don't think there were anything that didn't work well. But I guess we had difficult trying to post the actual work on the thinglink because the file was too big. However, we sorted out and we got our product!
    c. What would you do differently next time?
    - I can actually say that I wouldn't do anything different than what we have now because I'm very proud of our final product. It's very professional and creative (in my opinion).
    d. Specifically comment on the 10 tips for effective infographics -

Be Concise - I hate to admit but we have a lot of word on our final infographic but the main things are the ones that are in bigger fonts so, it kind of makes up for it.

Be Visual- Ours is very visual and on point. The colorings are meant to show that way. We have rocks to represent lead etc.

Be Smarter- Before this mini-project, I was completely oblivious to the fact that such an event occurred. I learned a lot of things.

Be Transparent- The infographic talks about the event and its effects on people. It doesn't go in depth with every single details but it shows the important ones in a bigger font.

    Be Different

    Be Accurate

    Be Attractive

    Be Varied

    Be Gracious

    Be Creative

Which of these areas did you excel in? Which were not so well represented? Why do you think some elements of design were easier or harder to include in the end product?

Describe the Q3BM: what was the assignment?  What did your group decide to do and why?
    - So the purpose of this project was to create a show/ radio or something media involved that has to do with relationship and use 10 vocabularies that you learned this quarter and the subjunctives etc and to be able to use it in a proper way. For our group, we wanted to be unique and made the most interesting/ weird radio show about relationships and we had different people calling in, sharing their odd relationships status.

What did you learn from doing this project?
    - From this project, I learned that

How do you feel about your final product?
    -

If you could do your project all over again, what would you do differently/the same?
    -

    Business Unit Reflection

Posted by Tenzin Ngawang in American History - Laufenberg on Monday, February 13, 2012 at 8:21 am

    1.Explain your choice of presentation

    - Sasha and I decided to make a poster with the three presidents side by side with a picture of each and an explanation of their individual hope or change for America. We chose to do a poster because we wanted it to be lively and got the message out.

2.Two sentences answering your EQ: What causes systemic and individual change?

    - Systemic changes require everyone's voice and contribution. It has a lot of barriers for a big problem to be solved and for an individual change, it's either the result or it proceeds systematic change, because it involves a person to look at themselves, and the problem before them, which leads a choice that has to be made to be made for the greater good.

    3. What questions do you still have about business in America?

    - How would creating smaller business help the major debt that the US government is entitled to?

    Clear Object

Posted by Tenzin Ngawang in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 12:03 pm
For the Clear Object drawing, I didn't have much trouble because I already did it in first quarter. I think I've excelled at drawing clear object. Especially, shading because when I did the clear object in first quarter, I had difficulty shading cause whenever I did one part of the shading, it never look exactly like the object that was infront of me. I also realized that when I'm drawing clear object, I have to stay at one place with specific lighting because if I left my drawing undone and continued the next class, it makes a huge difference with shading.

    The Little Heart-attack - Sci-Fi Story_Tenzin

Posted by Tenzin Ngawang in English 3 - Rami on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 12:04 pm

I sat on my bean bag, frustrated. Why couldn’t I be as smart as my father? With his support, I should be on top of the world like him. He always treats me as though I’m his only child. Every time there’s a major crisis, I have to be with him because he doesn’t want anyone but me with him when he’s trying to solve something big. I guess I’m his inspiration. I wish I had someone as an inspiration... I wish I was my dad. Even though he’s old and annoying sometimes, he’s known as the smartest guy in the world. These days there are so many technologies that work with humans that people are getting lazier and lazier, day by day. Like what Dr. Ngawang once said about the technologies in 21st centuries and I quote, “Someday, technologies will take over the world and life as we know it, will be a lot easier.” I have to agree with the quote because it is true that technologies have definitely taken over the world and life is easier but life is too easy that everyone is getting more and more brainless. It sure is simple with bots doing all the works for us and you don’t have to think because everything is done for you. Researches have shown that there has never been this many obese people in the world. Every single household own a chef-la; she cooks all the meals and since she does all the cooking, there’s no need for anyone to be cooking. My dad has been telling me only 1% of whole population in United States has an IQ of 50 or more and they are encouraged to participate in the “----------”. He is the leader of that group because like I said earlier, he was named the “smartest guy in the world”.

I remember that day... The day my dad was pronounced the smartest guy to be alive. Year 3000, to be exact. Mr. Rondolsky gave a whole speech about my dad and how appreciative he is of him. He started of mentioning my dad and his alien friends from Mars and how he was the one who bonded with the aliens after 5 centuries of the humans thinking aliens are here to destroy our planet. When reality, they were actual nice beings. Even with their vicious, odd looks, dad figured out a way to talk with them through frequencies of sound waves with the little knowledge of physics, he had. Then he started talking about all the popular inventions that my dad had created in his life when he was a young. I could see his envious face even today. I want to see someone, who look up to me. I mean I still have time to shine. I’m only 23 and my dad, well my dad is really old. Now that I’m mentioning his age, he’s turning 76 this weekend!

I’ve planned a special secret birthday ceremony for him. He has no clue I’m planning it. Even though I feel as though he may have notice my behavior a teensy bit strange for the past few weeks because I have been getting home late at night. Though he never bothered to ask why I was coming so late. Every time I came in, he was in his lab with his machine gears working on a new robot called “Gee”. Gee, on the other hand was specially dedicated for his girlfriend, Gina. Gina was a decent woman for him and i accepted her in the family because she wasn’t dumb like the rest and she reminded me a littlle of my mother. It is such a tragic that every decent women that my dad married, ended up dying. My mom died when I was 13 due to a machine malfunction. The worst part is we couldn’t find her body because she was stuck in the time travelling device. Gina died 2 years ago because of my aunt. My aunt, well she’s a robot. She’s a human robot, meaning she looks completely like a human and has human organs except her brain. Her brain is made out of metal with chips. Her head is abnormally large but she is a beautiful creature.

“Gavin! Gavin! Wake Up! Are you okay?” my lovely sister blurred in front of my face.

“Yes..... Yes, I’m awake, Kasia.” I replied with pain in my neck. I had fallen asleep on the bean bag. “How did I end up falling asleep!!” I asked to myself because last time I checked, my sister was watching the television on her bed while I was on the bag, reading. I’ve never fallen asleep reading a book, no matter how boring or annoying it is.

“You looked really tired when you came in.” Kasia replied with a smile. Then it all came to mind. I was really tired last night with all these preparation for my dad’s birthday party this weekend. Wait, it is 2 am. His birthday will be tomorrow. I forgot the day was already over and new day is about to dawn. I remember I wrote a status up on my “Walls Of Faces”, social networking center saying I was organizing a birthday party for my dad. After only a second later, I ended up with 1 million 203 people giving me suggestions. Almost everyone of them were dumb, someone said “Kiss him for me” and then it became a trend of thousands saying “kiss him for me.” It was annoying as hell because my iRobot started acting weird cause of all the notification I was getting at the same time. To be honest, I was pretty jealous of how popular my dad was and how everyone seem to like him. That’s where all these junk popped up in my head, which made my head throb and fall asleep unconsciously.

With the help of Myla and Hollis, we finished all the decorations for tomorrow. Myla was one of the house maid that my dad had made for me and Hollis is my homework helper that I purchased at the mall. I got my speech ready and that included... Dun- dah- tah! my first new invention; a robot that can feel emotions. I’ve worked my butts off for this for 2 entire year while I was in college. Aside from that, today went by so quickly, I didn’t even realize I forgot to eat. I was starving! I begged chef la to make me a chicken noodle soup and some salad. I don’t know why but I wanted to be healthy tonight. The dinner was delish as always so i headed to sleep praying for tomorrow to go well.

“Mr. Gavin! Today is Professor Adonis Forest, bracket my father bracket, birthday.” Myla announced coming with a fresh pair of tan pants and a black tuxedo shirt, near my bed. I realized I have still forgotten to register “Professor Adonis Forest” as my dad on her brain chip instead I put in brackets because I was lazy.

“Thanks Myla! I got it! Leave the clothes on the table. I’m going to take a shower in a second. Tell chef-la to make me a vanilla bean coffee for me this morning. Oops! and don’t forget to wrap that gift for me!” I said with such anticipation, Myla got right to work. My shower lasted for about 5 minutes and I rushed through out the door with my brand new clothing.

At the party, my aunt successfully brought my dad to the ceremony without releasing the secret party. When he came in and heard the loud “HAPPY BIRTHDAY”, he almost collapsed. Everyone hushed while he wheezed; that very moment left everyone skipping a heart beat knowing the consequences of him dying. I had a playback of what would actually happen to me and the whole nation if my dad actually died. There would be no one as smart as him and there won’t be any changes to the whole planet even after million of years after his death. There will be only few smart ones and they’ll take over the world instead of helping each other out like my dad. However, he got up and all I hear is a huge sigh of relief from the crowd. Then I got up to the stage and got ready for the speech.

“I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to come here from all over the world to celebrate my dear father, Adonis Forest’s 76th birthday! I want to thank my two baby robots, Myla & Hollis that has helped me organize this party. Now I would like to share some of my thoughts and wishes for my dad for his upcoming years. When I think of my father, I don’t know how to describe him. He’s the greatest man I will ever know. Now I know that every dad wants to hear their kids say I want to be just like my father and I am going to say it with actual deep feelings because I truly do envy him and when I grow up, I want to be just like you, dad.” I start my speech and I looked up and I can see everyone with an awe spark in their eyes. Then I continue, “ I really can’t imagine anyone as great as you to be my father. I am truly blessed to have you as my dad. You’re the best dad I can ever have.” I look up and I can see my dad tearing up but with a bold face. Then I get ready for the zenith of my speech. “. . . I would like to say that I’m going to be a married man soon.” The whole crowd goes nuts congratulating me starts blowing up champagnes. I skim through the crowd and see my dad in disbelieve as though he’s having some trouble. l reflected, did I just blurted something ridiculous in front of the crowd? instead of saying I’m getting married? The next thing I know, my dad’s on the floor and everyone hushes.

    Sólo 1¢ Mas!

      • What it's like to work as a tomato picker in Florida
        - I know that the workers have to be out in the farm in extreme heat. Not only that, when they're working, they have to be very efficient and fast so that they can earn more money. They get paid only 40-50 cents per bucket of tomatoes. In addition, one bucket is like 32 lbs. No Americans will work this hard to earn only 50 cents.
      • The problem with buying tomatoes from Trader Joe's
        - The problem with buying tomatoes from Trader Joe's is that unlike other companies, trader joe's is not participating in a organization that provides fair amount of money for the workers. The worse part is that the workers are only asking for 1 more cent per bucket. It is really shameful because everyone goes to Trader Joe's to buy groceries and Trader Joe's ask for more money than any other grocery shop. They are being selfish.
      • What we can do about it
        - We can make this unfairness publicized so that Trader Joe's CEO can feel a guilty and pay legitimate amount of money for the poor workers that suffer.

    Reflection

    • How did you group do about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?
      - Well, we first started off with an idea of having a law/amendment saying voting is mandatory but that wasn't possible. Then we changed to having classes to educate the citizens about candidates and telling how important it is for everyone to vote. That failed as well because no one has time for that. At last, we came across an idea of having 16 years old, to be able to vote.
    • 11th grade Essential ? - What is the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change?
      - I think the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change is very important because if there weren't for different changes, where would the world be?
    • How has your understanding of the electoral process and whether or not the US is a democracy evolved during this unit?
      - When we first started, I was completely and utterly oblivious to the election day. I didn't know what really happened during the day, I just knew that we had the day off from school. After the interviews and getting a little knowledge of how that worked out, I am more conscious than ever. I learned how important it is vote and surprising new fact, very very few citizens participate in the electoral process in America.
    • How did you decide to best relay a message to a national audience with your marketing campaign?
      - I made a print Ad. I didn't want it to be too informative (crowded with words), but something that was simple and got the message out, Loud & Clear. Something that was creative and got people's attention right away by the bright color yellow and big words, that popped out.

Artist Statement on my Clear Object Drawing

When I first saw the video that Emma showed during class, I was completely sure I wouldn't be able to draw such a thing as still object drawing. I've never drawn anything like this. I've always thought only the best of the best artists know how to draw still object with all these different shadings.

While I was drawing the pot, I was constantly stepping back because it'd give me a different perspective of the drawing.   After drawing this, I may have used almost have of my erasers. So from the start, I began with a charcoal and started shading the main part of the paper, which was the center. Then I made outlines of the glass. By darkening the edges and whitening the outside, it made the object pop out from the dull charcoal filled paper. After that, I shaded in the shadows from one lighting.

I've never drawn a clear object before. I knew I wasn't going to be able to make a perfect drawing when i saw Emma's video because I've taken a class at Fleisher, which was oil painting where we also had to work with shading. It was a gruel-some experience because every time we had a shadow, we'd have to darken or choose a different color with same relation. However, in this drawing, we were only using charcoal and eraser, which was easier and it looked a whole lot better than my oil painting piece.

Artist Statement on my Figure Drawing

I can finally say I've drawn a whole body figure! I've never drawn a person's whole body, either it's a part of their body such as their face or their eyes but I never drew a whole body figure in detail. I mean obviously I've drawn stick figures but never looking at a person and noticing every bit- parts of their clothing textures, their body shape and their hairstyles.

This is Jasmine. The way I drew her was the same angle/ way she was facing. I've not finished my final drawing because of time issues. I started off outlining her whole body, then I started adding in little detail by detail. At the end, I felt as though I did pretty good but then I'm not a perfect artist, so I do not have a master piece. It was my first time so I think I did good job for a first time.

Figure Drawing was very difficult because it took more than I could ever imagine. When other artists in my class finished in one class, I felt stupid because I definitely needed more time. I started off drawing Sammy and I was actually really proud of where I was at but then the next thing I knew almost everyone in our class lost their drawings. So I had to redo it all over again. This time, I drew Jasmine, one of my art classmate.

    Diferente De La Clase: TenzinNgawang

Posted by Tenzin Ngawang in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 10:34 pm
This project was to create a song answering where you are from. What I learned from this project were couple of new words and it was like a review from what I learned previously and trying to use it in a song such as conjugation etc. I'm especially proud of my lyrics because when i checked in with Ms. Gierke and my peers, they said there weren't any errors! I usually make a lot of mistakes when I write things in spanish, either I didn't conjugated right or wrong usage of word. If I were to do this again, I'd pick a different song for the background because I was thinking of picking the song "Rocking the Pants by Prince Royce" but then I couldn't find a karoake version of that song and I researched how to convert mp3s to Karoake, it didn't work out well.

Lyrics to the song: Diferente De La Clase

    De donde vengo yo
    Tú eres quien eres
    Donde la vida es facíl
    Todo era sencillo

    Chorus
    Soy diferente de la clase
    de diferentes antecedentes

    Vengo de Tibet
    Hierbas y los animales
simple como un hombre de las cavernas
    comida encontrado de naturaleza.

    Chorus
    Soy diferente de la clase
    de diferentes antecedentes

    Vengo de India
Naan pan, pollo al curry y kulfi
    Donde la educación es crucial
Y donde todo el mundo es amigable

    Vengo de America
Una nación, por lo que diversos
    Donde todos son iguales
    llenas de oportunidades
    La vida es tan competitivo.

Changing your facebook language to a new language was an amazing idea because it was fascinating. I learned tons of new words! I kind of made a collage of different things in spanish. It was interesting to see words that I usually see in spanish and trying to understand it. I learned that if you try, you'll learn. :)

    Immigration Visualization Project - Reflection

Posted by Tenzin Ngawang in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 10:10 am

So, our project is on paper, we didn't have it digitally.

What surprised me the most during this project was that we were searching like the immigration rates during different decades and I realized that there were dramatic difference during the decades based on what happened on the decade before. If something bad happened in the Americas, the immigrated decreased like multiple times and when nothing bad or good happened, the immigration increased gradually so there weren't any trend or pattern on the data. Looking at the data, you'll understand why America's so diverse because there are people coming from all over the world every year.

So like I previously stated, our project is on paper. We decided to use paper because we were planning to create models on google sketchup or use technology to represent the data but we were running out of time. One thing that was challenging for our group work was that we didn't get to work together outside school because it was a paper and only one person could edit it. But we worked together on gathering information on google doc. If we were to do this project again, I'd use something like google presentation where everyone in our group can edit. However, at the end of the day, I'm proud of our work.

    Refran de Tenzin cancion

Posted by Tenzin Ngawang in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at 9:40 am
    Me llamo Tenzin

    Soy de Tibet

    Soy de India

    Tengo muy tradición

    Una es...

What is your refrán supposed to communicate?
    - So, my refrán is basically where I'm from and when the whole song is finished, you'll understand like where it'll go because this is only the chorus.
What are you especially happy about with your first draft?
    - The repetition.
What would you like to improve about your refrán first draft?
    - I feel like I still need to write more but then it's a chorus and I don't want it to be long because I'll be repeating that the whole time and I don't want to reveal too much.
What was difficult about writing your refrán?

    Where Im From

Posted by Tenzin Ngawang in English 3 - Rami on Friday, September 9, 2011 at 1:38 pm

I am from a religious mom
    A playful dad and
    Loud, Annoying siblings running around
    Where everything is everywhere
    Where nothing can be found
    I’m from a family
    where food is everything
    Mixed-Tradional foods, should I say
    Indian and Tibetan
    - A Mixed Cultural family
    I’m from inner city, where
    No one knows their neighbors!
    I’m from different country
    with a complete different background
From the rest of the kids in here
    where everybody knew each other
    I’m from a veteran dad
    who cares about health
if I were a little out of shape,
he’ll say “Bhumo la, you need to cut down on that food”
Or “You better start working out again”
    I’m from a spiritual mom
    who always quotes “God”
who always loved me more than anything.
I’m from a small blue room
    with a small television
    always on disney channel
    I’m from a school
    filled with talented students
    I’m from making my head
bigger and bigger, day by day.
    I’m from an english class
    with us writing a poem
    called “I am from..”

English and History & Mr. Block… Where do I start? They both were pretty much the same for me since both of them related to each other. It was hard to tell which class was which because we had the same teacher as well. This year was interesting for me because we learned new things everyday and the whole year went by so fast. For English, we read couple of books, wrote poems, essays and bunch of other things. I really got to learn more about myself when writing essays and or writing poetry. For our history class, we went from this side of the world to that, we landed everywhere. We got to learn about the places, their cultures, religions, and how different they are from our nation.

First of all, I want to start off with my favorite unit from history class, which was the religion project. Well, not my favorite but the project that I worked the hardest on. It required a lot, A LOT of research. In the end, I felt pretty good about my final piece because I went with the topic, which was “Interfaith Marriages and Religions” with a focus point on Hinduism and Islam. I learned heaps of things that I never thought I’d learn. I got bits of a taste of how it’d feel being a victim in an interfaith marriage with a Hindu other or an Islamic other. When I was researching about Islam, I passed by this quote “Girls far below the age of puberty are forcibly married to older persons (sometimes in their 50s and later)...” This was how a Muslim girl lived, working for their husband. For this project, I had to create a pamphlet and I told why interfaith marriages should be allowed in these kinds of religions.

In addition, I wrote poems that related to me this year! In my poetry project, I wrote about my memories, the memories that I long to repeat itself, and about myself with different styles of poetry. Take an example of the poem “I was raised by…” I wrote about how I was raised, where I was raised, what I was raised for etc. In the ending of my poem, I wrote, “I was raised by the world filled with love.” Because I know there are unfortunate kids out there, and I am fortunate enough to have everything that I have now. Poetry made me realize how fortunate I am.

Next thing would definitely be the monologue project; I’d say it was the longest period of time we’ve ever worked on on a unit. It was worth it though because I got to work with something, I’ve never worked on before. First of all, I’d never heard the term ‘monologue’. I was confused with the whole idea. Then working with Mr. Block, I started writing them and then started talking with my colleagues; they really helped me understand the whole process. In addition, we had to choose a historic event and I chose Chinese invasion in Tibet. I got to learn new things and got more involved with my own culture.

In the beginning of the year, we read the book called “Lord of the Flies” and we had to write a thesis paper. I chose my theme as Judgment. I’m specifically proud of my thesis of the paper because it proves a very important matter where it states; “By looking at Lord of the Flies and modern political leader, we can see that public usually judge the leader by their voice and looks, which most people do not see; this is important because you are letting someone lead you not knowing how well he/she can handle the crowd in situations.” I used sources from both the book and I researched. Researching is the tip when it comes to writing paper.

Last thing I want to reflect on is my colonialism project, where I researched about post-colonial and pre-colonial effects on India.  Our project was to pick a country and create an exhibit based on colonial times. I focused my presentation on colonial beneficiaries in India. I brought different artifacts and went in detail about how it related to the topic and how it will look like in the exhibit.  I am very proud of this work because I worked a whole week researching about colonialism in India. I got to learn the history of India before colonialism.

For my project, I made a video. In this video, I don't have a lot of pictures of me when I was younger because I can't find any at home. The only ones I found are in the video. I felt as though I worked really hard for this project because this is the last project and that was the only way to get an A in this class. I think I did really well with the script. That would be like the best part of my project. If I were to do this project again, I wouldn't change much because I like the way it is right now. By doing this project, I felt as though I've learned a lot this year because it's like a reflection to all the things we've learned through out the year.

    Past Troubles

Posted by Tenzin Ngawang in World History - Block on Sunday, April 10, 2011 at 10:43 pm
    Act 1

    Scene 1:

Stage Directions: A lady telling her story of escaping Tibet to an interviewer, who is doing a research about Tibetan and Chinese relationship because she was once told not to take any pictures and a group of soldiers snatched her necklace when she toured Tibet and just by curiosity she figured to research about the relationship.

When the whole thing happened, I was pregnant with my first son.

(tears filled up her eyes, but continues talking)

He was 7 months old and my stomach was huge. I had to wake up at 2 in the morning and leave with only the clothing I had on. I grabbed two pack of tsampa, which...  which is like a traditional food. (gives a hand gesture while explaining what tsampa is)

He was kicking much harder than usual too.

(touches her stomach, remembering how it felt... and face turns serious)

I tried to be calm and control but I couldn’t help but my anxiety, showing on my face. I could see my family members look at me strangely but they were too busy with the whole leaving the country situation. I heard my mom say we’re going to die but my dad refused saying we’re not going to die, we have to run away from this place without anyone noticing. I was getting more and more anxious. I passed by the Chinese neighborhood police station, I could see one of the police smoking but we all were so quiet, he didn’t even noticed us walking by in the dark. There were 7 of us including my coming baby, (touches her stomach)

my father, mother, sister, aunt, my grandfather & me. We saw couple other groups going too. We had no idea where we were going, kept on walking, walking and walking. (The interviewer widened his eyes making a wow face gesture but the lady continued saying what she was saying.) Yeah I did walk all the way from Tibet to India. It was trouble some but there was no way to get here. It was either die from Chinese government or escape and hopefully live. The other group that came with us had a little girl, she had worn a small soled shoe and she walked with us without one single complain. (face brightens) I was surprised to see such mature girl, she looked like she was around 8 or 9 year old. Later when we got here, She showed her feet, her toe was bleeding (points to one of her foot) and it had become huge. The shoe had a hole at the bottom. I couldn’t do anything but There was such hope and determination in her voice when she said it. I wondered how lucky her mother was to have such a child that thinks for herself that way. I hoped my coming daughter or son would become just like her and appreciate my love for them.

    Act 2

A girl writing her journal while the things are happening outside her house.

I saw those soldiers with their guns marching through the neighborhood. My mom left to get some meat from her pay this morning and I had to baby-sit my siblings since I’m the oldest in my house. I tried to be calm and breathe. I told my siblings to hush so they won’t come to our house. I peeped through the ajar door, mom had forgotten to close the door and if I close right now, it’ll be too late. It’s old and rusty, it needs oil but I have no idea what oil you need to use and my mother doesn’t either. Wish father were still here to take care of the household. Mom is too busy being a housekeeper for a rich Chinese family when she has 5 children at home with no parental supervision, only me, a 14-year-old girl. She loves us though.(her face wanders around for a while.) She always brings one or two toys for us and starts telling us how sorry she is that we have to live such horrible lives because she didn't move to India when she had Penpa, my youngest little brother. She continues saying ‘I hope one day you all will become great people in life’ and leave the room crying. I’ve always loved her because i don’t consider it her fault.   (high pitched)  She was pregnant! How could she have ran away when she was pregnant and had four other children on her hands. I’ve heard stories that many Tibetans died on their trail to India. Like for example, my aunt, she was 7 month pregnant! (widens her eyes) I have no idea how she is anymore. She probably died on the trial with her first baby unborn. I feel lucky to be alive and I tell my siblings the same and that they are lucky to even have a mother to take care of us. (Dolma, 8 years old, younger than me, nudges me quietly) I quickly looked and saw one of the soldiers coming towards us. I hoped dear god please let him go away. Please! Please! Please! I don’t want them to take away any other of my family members. Luckily some other soldier called him and left, to the opposite door. Bang! Bang! Bang! I quickly covered my sibling’s eyes with my arms; my arms weren’t long enough to cover every one’s eyes. I prayed please! Don’t let my siblings become influenced by these men. I could hear the mummers of the soldiers something about the family’s mother being a part in the protest and how dare she get out alive. They marched right off with their arms loaded again. I closed the door and went to bed hoping mom would come faster and nothing bad happened to her on her way.

    Act 3
Stage Direction: A 16 year old, Tibetan boy looking at a picture of his family when he was little and telling a story about him escaping from China to his favorite teacher.

We were all together and we were in the car. (Tears filled up his eyes) I loved my family. I had a brother and two loving parents. My father had woken my brother and I up early in the morning around 3 am. He said we had some special training to do or something like that. I thought it was a father to son thing so we left without bothering telling my mother where we were headed to. Dad had packed up 2 suit cases. I wondered what was in those suit cases but i never bothered to ask. I was too excited thinking what was going to happen early in the morning, father to son. My dad and brother sat on the front seat and I sat at the back by myself. I remember looking out the window and thinking what could possibly be a father to son thing at this kind of hour.

It was pitch dark, I couldn't see anything, what so ever. I kept on asking what we were doing but dad hushed me with his deep fatherly voice. I kept quiet till he said I love you both a lot and know that your parents will always loved you. My brother figured what was happening and started anticipating. He started saying I know what you are about to do, don’t do this to us, please! Don’t! I thought for a moment unsure of what was happening. Finally dad blurted out, we might be able to cross over the borders but he was pretty sure he wasn’t going to make it through. He handed us the suit cases and told us it was some food and clothes packed for us. He was 51 years old and I was 10 at the moment and my brother, 14. I remember him telling us we were continuing going on the trail to Nepal which will take about around a day or so and when we reach there, try to look for a lady named....... (Pauses trying to remember her name) I can’t remember her name right now but he said she’d help me go to a Tibetan school in northern India, a Tibetan school run by our his holiness the Dalai Lama’s sister. He said we’d be thankful for what our parents have planned for us. And I do now, I am grateful to receive such good education even without parent’s support, I still have a great future ahead of me. One day, I’ll go see my parents in Tibet and make them be proud of what I’ve accomplished. Hoping they’ll still be there when I get there.

    Act 4

Stage Direction: An American female, bhuddhist tourist, who just got told not to take any pictures in an open spaced area by a soldier. She has a Dalai Lama’s picture as a necklace.
How ridiculous is this!? I was being told not to take picture of what I like!? I’ve never seen any country that didn’t allow me to take picture of nature. That was just ridiculous! I’ve been to every continent in this world and No, no one had ever told me I can’t take picture. These Chinese people get on my nerves! I swear they think they better than everybody! How can they do such things? I read an article online last week before I flew here to Tibet. I don’t know all that’s happened to Tibet but I know one thing, China has been ruling Tibet for about 50 years by now. I feel really sympathetic towards the Tibetans. A couple of days ago, a soldier was walking pass me and he kept on starting at my neck and I was wondering what he was staring at. I thought he was either staring at my “_ inappropriate ” part or my necklace. Another pompous soldier came by and they started mumbling something. He came right by me and snatched my necklace and told me that i couldn’t wear this particular necklace because it had a little portrait of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Buddhism. That was actually a gift from my aunt because she’s a very religious woman. I decided to wear it for the tour because it was brand new and the chain looked gorgeous.

    Act 5
    Stage Direction:
I hear about Tibet’s invasion by Chinese government every single day. I’m just surprised how no other countries are doing anything about it. It’s such a sad thing we have to be a refugee here in India. The sadder part is that I have never even been to Tibet, my own country. There’s always a headline about a group of monks dead due to Chinese officers. I cannot understand how Tibetans still struggle to live in China even after all these brutal things have happened. My aunt and uncle are still in Tibet and I am worried sick about them. Couple weeks ago on the news, ten people were dead in Tibet because of Chinese soldiers and their face couldn’t be identified. My parents ran to the phone booth soon as they heard the news to call our uncles and aunties to make sure they were safe and alive. There was a whole line of other Tibetan refugees dying to get to the phone. It was like a small restaurant giving free food to the orphanage and the orphans excitedly eager to get the food and being in line but here, it wasn’t the excited face, it was more of Oh My Goodness, what if they’re dead? What am I going to do!? etc. We have done no harm to the Chinese government so why should we be the ones struggling. Tibetans have always been the kind and sincere ones to everyone. We don’t deserve this kind of cruelty.

What did you learn from doing this project? (skills, life lessons, words etc)
    - I learned how to conjugate the verbs in spanish and I also made me remember more of the vocabs that I already learned. Another thing is that I never realize I go through a bunch before school and it made me jot down all the things that I do every single day.

How do you feel about your final product?
    - I feel as though I've worked hard even though I didn't include every single thing that I do from morning to night. The video file was getting larger and larger so, I decided to stop but I think all my word usage and such are good.

If you could do your project all over again, what would you do differently/the same?
    - I'd have my scripts ready before hand so that Srta. G can check it and also I wouldn't include all every single detail from morning to start of class and instead make it more brief and end it by the end of the day.

Did you enjoy this project? Why or why not?
    - I did enjoy this project because it was fun making a video out of your daily routine and I learned how to use iMovie a little better.

    Tenzin's Language Autobiography

Posted by Tenzin Ngawang in English 2 - Block on Monday, December 20, 2010 at 11:45 am

    Tenzin Ngawang

    Iron Stream

Talking about myself is really not my thing but I’ll have to write something as my autobiography for my english project which is specifically for my language so here it goes.

Language from my perspective is a way of communicating in one specific community and that can be learned by foreigner. I have always been interested in learning different languages. I pick up languages quicker than everyone because it fascinates me the most. My favorite way to learn languages are to watch TV shows or look at how people speak it.

In my earlier years, I lived in a rural place in northern India with small amount of people. I went to tibetan school and took hindi classes. My family spoke tibetan at all times, my god grandpa would speak heavy tibetan with big tibetan words but I was little so I only knew couple of big words. When I visited my parents in south India during winter vacation, I’d blurt out big tibetan words and my mom would be in awe. I didn’t know a lot of different languages existed.

I remember this one time when I said “thamp tu” meaning like the stamp with blue ink. It was a really hot day like always and it had been a week since my arrival in south india. I was around 5 years old and my mom just got home from her shop. My grandma was working on some paperwork and I picked up a stamp that had our address on it.

“Mommy, how do you have our address on this thamp tu (stamp)” I asked curiously.

“awww my baby said “thamp tu”! I’ve to call your dad. He’s going to be so proud of you!” my mom replied in awe. I was pretty surprised to see her so proud of me. I overheard my mom talking to my grandma saying something about being happy that I got into the tibetan school in Dharamsala. Also that she sees the improvement in me already and that it’ll be good for my future etc. I wanted to learn more and more new words in tibetan when I went back to my school in the spring. All my teachers were pretty surprised at how well I was doing in every classes. Then during my 6th grade, I had to take hindi classes. I had the most strict teacher in my whole entire life. She’d hit us with broom if we failed our quizzes. In India, teachers were allowed to hit their students. The whole hitting part made me want to pass all the quizzes and it actually helped me a lot in learning hindi even though I speak it already. I learned hindi just by living in India of how people talk, for example, in a store, you’d want to ask can I get this? or how much it is? etc. Basically wherever you live, you’ll catch up with the language pretty quickly.

One day, I got home and my god grandpa told me that my dad fled to United States and I wondered how would he manage to speak english when he only had a 5th grade level of knowledge. He is a smart man but, he knew only few words in english back then. I later learned that he went to my uncle’s first and my uncle was like the eye to his body. He taught everything he needed to know.

I started learning the full english in 7th grade. Meaning I already learned alphabets and everything in 3rd or 4th grade but we were finally starting to learn meanings to passages and or paragraphs of english essays. During my 7th grade, I flew here, in US. I had to 4 months till I can join school because we arrived in may. In June, american students were suppose to have summer vacation and there was no point in going to school for a month. My siblings and I started watching TV shows to catch up with the language because my siblings were even worse with English because they hadn’t started learning english yet in India. Then during september when school started, I could easily understand what people were saying when they asked questions. I didn’t have a rough first day in middle school like every book I read said. I even made couple friends.
