Q2 Art Portfolio

Posted by Fodie Camara in Advanced Art - Hull - a2 on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 12:00 pm

I’m in 11th grade and in the class of advance art. I love working on art pieces even though I’m not good at drawing. This is quarter 2 I did about 4 major projects. I think I improve on my art skill and drawing from the first quarter because of all the new things I have learned. The first major project was the collage. My collage was the different type of shoes and boots. My second major project was fabric. I used my mom bed and fabric to follow along. Then, my third major project was my photo editing. I took a picture of me on facebook and editing it by smuggling the background of the photo. Lastly, my last project was my Illustration. In my Illustration was my drawing of my friends and I were a front of my chinese store playing football. Football is my life and very meaningful to me and always will be. I trying to keep on improving on all my art skills and hopefully they will more in the 3 quarter..

Q2 Art Portfolio

My overall goal for each piece of artwork was to challenge my ideas by not using the first the thought that comes to mind. Instead of my normal black, grey, and white color scheme, I wanted to use much more color and vibrancy in my pieces. I also wanted to include a feminist and peaceful mood for my pieces.

My first piece was my collage that is made with colored pencils, sharpies, and magazine clippings of flowers. I chose to draw a woman with flowers for hair, because I wanted to represent a woman's thoughts that bloom from her mind to create something beautiful and full of life.

For my fabric drawing, I chose to sketch a dress with a shaw in pencil. I wanted to include many folds and focus on shading to make the drawing have a three dimensional and realistic look. I used a dress to include a feminine element instead of just drawing a random piece of fabric.

As for my edited photo, I took a picture of my favorite ornament on my Christmas tree. I thought that it would make a nice photo, because of the glass, the shape of the ornament, the designs on the ornament, and the lights under the ornament. I wanted to use a black and white filter to try to accentuate the light, highlight the birds and flower, and make the picture look peaceful and elegant.

Lastly, for my illustration, I drew a picture inspired by the Divergent book series which I currently cannot stop reading. The circles with symbols represent the society's factions of society in the book. I chose to write Divergent next to the faction to make it clear what piece of literature the drawing is about. I also tried to blend the colors of the factions into the letter to have the word flow with the faction symbols.

Q2 Art Portfolio

After another quarter of work, I learned more by studying other people’s work in multiple mediums to gain inspiration for my own. My interests are rooted deeply in artists my age and I pulled much of my inspiration from those that I follow on Instagram and Twitter. I enjoyed going to an abstract place with a few of my pieces and not worrying so much about producing something that looked the way I originally intended, but about producing something that I enjoyed creating. Earlier in the quarter, I realized that my meticulousness was holding me back and towards the end, my more abstract pieces bring back feelings of accomplishment. This quarter in art, we worked on a variety of mediums and got to dabble in our own personal style even more. The first project in my slide, drawing fabric, was one of my favorite. I got experiment with lines and shape and shadowing, which is one of my biggest difficulties. I made sure I used different types of pictures for these as fabric has a very specific shape depending on how it's held or laid and is really fun to experiment with.

My second piece, the photo editing, was also fun as one of my first loves is photography. I used a picture that I took using 35mm film a couple summers ago and did some color correction; I'm not a huge fan of filters because i think, unless it's a filter you created, they can add too much drama to something really nice. My third piece is the illustration. For this, I designed a cover for one of my favorite albums by one of my favorite bands, The Internet. Their ego death album speaks on relationship troubles, societal issues, and pop culture. I listened to it over and over to give myself ample inspiration. I wish that I had colored pencils in my house because I'd add a yellow background to make the other colors pop. In all, I enjoyed creating this quarter and I'm excited for next quarter's assignments.

Q2 Art Portfolio

This quarter I decided to focus on art that meant something to me personally. Many artists find their inspiration on things and people around them and I wanted to find that same kind of inspiration in my life. For me it started with the art history. I chose to research art from the middle east because it has a spiritual connection to me and I wanted to learn more about that part of my life.

The second thing was the collage. I chose to make the symbol for the Philadelphia Eagles. To many this may seem boring or even lame, however as a beyond avid sports fan who plans on pursuing a career centered around sports it is a big part of my life. I didn't want to do a conventional Eagles symbol. I used many different colors of paper and arranged them in a unique way to display that I want a bright future for our city's football team.

The third piece of art was the fabric drawing. For this one I drew the cloth draped over the stool that was displayed in class, however when I drew it I imagined he cloth instead as my bed blanket. A much thicker and less creased fabric. I wanted to catch the flow of the fabric as it drapes of the stool.

For the next art project I edited a photo of one of my friends. We were in class together and I took a photo. This was probably my favorite assignment because it was very cool to play around with the different features of the photo editing tool. In addition I got to incorporate one of my friends into the art class which was awesome.

Finally for drawing the scenes I drew one of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite books, Moneyball. The scene portrays Billy Beane telling the coach of the Athletics that he cannot play a certain player, with the reason being that he was traded. The manager is dumbfounded by the news and I tried to show that.

Zack Hersh — Quarter 2 Art

Posted by Zack Hersh in Advanced Art - Hull - a2 on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at 7:16 pm

The theme of this quarter's work for me was finding inspiration. For three of the four pieces I created this quarter, I had at first no idea of what I was going to make and spent a good portion of time just trying to figure that out — either by thinking it through, talking it out, or physically experimenting with the medium. Unlike pieces I had created in the past, for most of these I didn't have a clear vision of what I was going for even after I finally had an idea, which made seeing the way in which they each unfolded all the more interesting and exciting.

The first piece is a collage, entitled Lens. Collating is a process of creation that I had enjoyed greatly before (see my quarter 1 work here), but I was completely drawing up blanks when trying to conceive an idea. Maybe it was the expanse of options, or the thought of having a concept but not feeling like I would be able to actualize it with my skill level or resources. After a week or two of still having nothing I took it back to the way we would make collages in younger grades, by cutting pictures from old magazines, and began flipping through some such publications and seeing what came. I became interested in the eyes, and how they are all very different, while still so similar, and how much you both can and can't discern from them. The resulting collage was only pictures of eyes of all different kinds, and put together in the almond shape of an eye. The many eyes made up one lens. Of the four pieces this quarter this was the one I spent the most time on by far.

The second piece was an original photo and then editing it with photo editing software. I knew I wanted to work with something I had already taken, and spent the first half of the process just sifting through all of my photos that I could find and seeing what spoke to me. I ended up with a panorama picture of my train station. I used the photo-editing software to sharpen up the image and make it more clean and less bleached, while still keeping the scene bright and sun-saturated.

The third piece was a pencil sketch of a piece of fabric. Before doing this piece I had never really noticed the intricacy of folds of fabric. I tried my best to match all of the folds and ripples in the sketch but found it quite challenging.

The final piece was an illustration of some sort, and this is where I drew the biggest blank. I had absolutely no idea where I wanted to go with this — every idea I had to for something to illustrate I couldn't picture filling a page with a picture to accompany it. Of all of the books, movies, and writing I know I couldn't draw up something that spoke to me. Songs were where I found the most ideas, but still couldn't wrap my head around an illustration for them. However, I had a flash of a thought about my English notebook, that I've been filling with colored marker-pen doodles while listening to discussions in class, and when I started to create the illustration on lined loose-leaf in the back of the notebook with the colored pens I'd been using, the drawing came naturally. The illustration is for the song Pompeii by Bastille, depicting in slashed and blended markings a lone brick arch in front of the massive volcano. After I completed it I realized I wished I'd put the grass farther back and extended it under the arch to show the volcano as farther away, but it nonetheless ended up as my favorite piece from this quarter. I don't feel the detail of the markings and the blended colors fully shows in the pictures, but the starkness and brightness that characterize it are apparent.

Q2 Artist Statement

Posted by Haisha Hahsy in Advanced Art - Hull - a2 on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at 3:50 pm

As an artist, I work hard to create drawings and paintings that speak to me about beauty that exists. Every artist has an inspiration mine is just straight out beauty. The word beauty these days is used so easily used, leaving no real meaning. Yet my art is to define the true meaning that lies right beneath our eyes. I try with every finished piece of art to create beauty that all are starting to neglect. I merely do not just want to capture an image but to define it. Each painting or drawing has something of mine in it not only that I made it, yet that their is something in their that can help define me as a person. When I work with a pencil I know that this pencil can create so much. I begin with a image in my mind and soon look at real life examples. I know a piece is done when I know that there is something that hints something about me and true beauty. When my work is going well I am filled with a sense of feeling good and knowing that my work has paid off. When I want people to see my work I want them to see a good job and attract allure. Hopefully all can see some good in my work, as I do. For trying is also a main key.

Q2 Artist's Statement

Posted by Caitlin Keough in Advanced Art - Hull - a2 on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at 1:54 pm

For my collage I wanted to keep it all in the same color scheme of greens and blues. So I flipped through a few magazines
and arranged some picture I cut out by their color. For our fabric drawing assignment, I chose to draw a big sweater because I knew that there would be a lot of folds and overlapping pieces in it that would create shadows. I drew it on a hanger because I felt like there would be more folds and shadows since it is just hanging there and it doesn't have to conform to the shape of anyone's body. For the photo editing assignment, I used one of my favorite pictures that I took for my photography class. I used Photoshop to edit it instead of the website that was provided for us, I hope that's okay. I liked the picture before, but I like the edited version even more because I really like how there is a lot more color in it. Before doing the illustration assignment, I looked up some children's poetry and found one that I liked. The poem I illustrated was called Teddy Bear and it was about a stuffed bear that was self-conscious about his weight. I chose to draw that image as a representation of the poem because it said that when he fell off the ottoman, he could never get back up again.

Quarter 2 - Artist's Statement

Posted by Lotus Shareef-Trudeau in Advanced Art - Hull - a2 on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 9:21 am

The first piece that I created was a collage. When making my collage I went for a sort of surrealist feel. I experimented with shifting the focus, I wanted the woman to be the first thing that your eye was drawn to so I painted over almost everything else in the collage with pink acrylic paint so that it was a little less clear and didn’t pop out as much as the woman did.

The next piece that I drew was of the top of my bed from my perspective where I was sitting at the bottom of the bed. I was focusing mainly on the blankets on the bed and how the fabric laid and wrinkled and casted shadows.

Pieces three and four are photos playing with depth of field. I focused my camera on the trees that are taking up most of the pictures so that everything that was not the tree was unfocused. I put filters on the photos, so that one is black and white and kinda has a parchment paper feel. The filter I put on the second photo intensifies all of the colors so that the darks seem to cast a shadow over the photo, while the lights almost bleach it out.

The fifth and final piece that I made was an illustration of a poem I really enjoy. In my illustration of the poem I depicted the silhouette of a man with a nebula inside of him using watercolors. I tried to convey the feeling that we each have a universe of emotion inside of us because that is the sort of feeling that I got when reading the poem.

Art Portfolio

This Quarter's  art was the best so far. I say this with the utmost confidence for a few reasons. One of them is that if you look at my art last year and my art this year you can see the improvement. Another reason why I say this because I am more engaged in my projects then I was before. I have taken out more time to make my projects to the best of my ability.

My ceiling tile was inspired by Tv. One day I was watching NFL network And I saw patrick peterson and since he is one of the best players in the NFL right now I decided to use him as an art project. This project was a little difficult for me because I never did a ceiling tile before but since I had help from my partners the project turned out great.

My self portrait was the hardest project out of my art profolio. I say this because It was hard to envision myself while I was drawing. Also I didn’t know how to draw some of my features like my hair. I feel like it is very accurate because I got the same skin complexion and low eyes that I have. I also added the kmart tag that I wear to work as an extra touch.

My next piece was “allah” in arabic. I did this because I grew up muslim and in my home environment I was surrounded by all things Islam so when Ms. Hull gave us the opportunity to free draw that was the first thing that popped in my head . This was pretty easy because I have pictures in my house similar to mine so it was easy to visualize on paper.
