Airlines are scrambling to train and hire young aviation professionals, and will be almost indefinitely. Aircraft manufacturers, Boeing and Airbus are projecting the industry to need 1.3 million aviation professionals, such as pilots, mechanics, and dispatchers within the next twenty years. With aviation being one of the world’s favorite forms of transportation, with 48% of American vacationers flying in airplanes for travel, it is important to sustain the industry.

Aside from transportation, aviation is used to power global commerce giants, to protect our pipelines, fight wildfires, among numerous purposes. With aviation having an employment disparity of this level, it is important to engage the next generation to fill the important needs aviation solves. Thus, aviation needs to be promoted as the welcoming field and community it is.

Unfortunately, it is hard to decide on pursuing aviation with a lack of exposure to it. It is hard to know if you enjoy flying an airplane if you don’t know what’s involved in it. The Philadelphia Youth Aviation Fair is a gathering of aviators, current and future to promote careers in aviation to the next generation. Participants in the fair will receive a complimentary flight in an airplane, a tour of the airport facilities, and access to numerous career-oriented opportunities.

Five high school students, from Science Leadership Academy experienced aviation first-hand. With the partnership of the Experimental Aviation Association, all participants are now enrolled in an online ground school and will be eligible to apply for the prestigious Ray Aviation Scholarship.

This source provides information on another aviation nonprofit organization’s efforts to attract youth to aviation. This organization admits that attracting young aviation professionals isn’t a competition, it is a collective effort by the aviation industry. This organization is working with educators to promote aviation topics to youth, by developing a STEM curriculum.

This source is a sample of a newsletter that the Experimental Aviation Association publishes, and sends to its volunteers for events of similar nature to my capstone. This source basically provides guidance for what to do if something unfortunate happens at an aviation event. There is a risk at my capstone being exercised, just like any other activity. Basically, this document tells its readers not to talk to the media, call the Federal Aviation Administration, and first aid. Media will push things out of proportion, in order to get people to watch it, so you have to be careful when the media tries to interview you.

This document is very short, yet it is all that is necessary, which is really beneficial for me, considering the simplicity of everything. The main ground rules for me is to make sure everyone passes a Youth Protection Check, that the pilots’ are safe and proficient, and to make sure parents sign off on the flight. All in all, this resource is going to be the document that rules the world for my event.

Marisa Garcia, a retired professional in the aircraft manufacturing industry provides thoughts on the impending pilot shortage. Garcia claims that airline incentives are not enough to alleviate the blow the pilot shortage will have on the commercial aviation industry. Garcia openly supports greater incentives, including a loosening of hour restrictions for airline pilots, citing 250 hours as adequate to operate a commuter aircraft. Reasoning for the removal of the 250 hour requirement is provided, considering a Colgan Air accident that occured in the year of 2009. Garcia uses this to weigh insights on how to attract young pilots to aviation.

A high-ranking Boeing 747 pilot shares his opinion on the pilot shortage on YouTube. He claims that the pilot shortage is caused by young pilots being underpaid about five years ago, which was misleading, considering the training requirements needed to become a professional pilots are so high. The pilot suggested that entry-level airlines have increased first-year salaries, and have increased signing bonuses tremendously, in order to attract younger pilots, and encourage them to continue throughout their training.

Jon Kotwicki: a world-renowned flight instructor, flight instructor, and successful entrepreneur details his experience at Lufthansa Aviation Training, in Goodyear, Arizona. While this video touches on solving the pilot shortage, its main purposes seems to be advertising for Lufthansa. Kotwicki himself said that he went to apply for a job there in the video. However, Kotwicki did detail that Lufthansa hires people off of the streets, and gives them a full scholarship so they can fly for Lufthansa to alleviate the pilot shortage in Germany. This reminds me of the U.S. Naval Academy. If I were to grow my capstone organization out, I might consider giving a scholarship to young pilots who are legitimately interested in aviation.

Nickerson, Dana. “Can Grassroots Flying Solve The Pilot Shortage?” AVweb. January 03, 2019. Accessed January 24, 2019. https://www.avweb.com/blogs/insider/Can-Grass-Roots-Flying-Solve-the-Pilot-Shortage-232078-1.html. Dana Nickerson, a recreational pilot recalls the differences of what it meant to learn to fly back then, and how it’s different now. Nickerson stated that pre-9/11, students would gather at local grassroots airports and fly ultralight aircraft, such as hang gliders and airplanes with very small engines. It used to be accessible to anyone whom wanted to learn, and was willing to help the operation. Nowadays, flight training is being controlled by expensive flight schools, that sit behind the fences and gates, that prevent people from feeling welcome to an airport.

Accessed January 23, 2019. https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2018/july/24/boeing-forecasts-unprecede ed-pilot-demand. David Tulis, an independent, vintage aircraft pilot discusses Boeing’s efforts to help alleviate the effect the pilot shortage has on the industry. What Boeing highlights in their activities is that there is not only going to be a pilot shortage, but also a technician shortage, and that the industry needs both. This narrows the scope of my capstone to include discussion on more of the technical sector of aviation. What I disagree with is the venue of their efforts; an event known as EAA Airventure, the world’s largest aviation convention. The reason why young people attend Airventure is because they already are interested in aviation. Some inner city child won’t attend Airventure, considering they don’t have the interest in aviation (at least yet).

Ashley De La Cruz Capstone

Throughout my whole life, I grew up with my parents struggling and working their hardest to give my siblings and I a better life filled with more opportunities than they could've given us back in their hometown in Mexico. Therefore, I knew that immigration was something that played a big role in our country, especially with undocumented immigrants. I knew that a lot of these members of the Hispanic community weren't aware of their rights or that they could have access to things such as health care even though they didn't have insurance. I knew that in order to educate more people, I would need to give them easy resources that they could reach and contact and just find out more information about. Therefore, I made 100 brochures in both Spanish and English, which included some basic rights that people should be aware of and also of places where they can go to get health care, dental care, and immigration help. With permission from some clinics and offices, I left some brochures with them so that people could take it home and become informed. I want people to know that just because they’re in a country that might not be their native country, they still have the same rights as everyone else. I want people to be aware that just because they have less it doesn’t mean that they can’t have the same as others.

Frazee, Gretchen. "What Constitutional Rights Do Undocumented Immigrants Have?" PBS. June 25, 2018. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/what-constitutional-rights-do-undocumented-immigrants-have.

This source is listing out what rights any undocumented immigrant has in this country, even though they might have not been born here. Some of the examples that I might include are, “Right to due process,” “The right to legal counsel,” “The right to be with your family,” and “The right to education.” I want to list these rights out because a lot of people live in fear and when they are placed in certain situations they aren’t aware that there are still rights that pertain to them. I want to show these communities that they can have the same opportunities as others.

"How Immigrants Are Getting Health Coverage." Healthinsurance.org. December 08, 2018. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.healthinsurance.org/obamacare/how-immigrants-are-getting-health-coverage/.

This source is going to be used to show how you don’t have to be a citizen in order to obtain health care access like those natural born citizens. This source lists key points, how the cost and what you can cover are changed based on your situations. This source also talks about how many of the people living here are uninsured, which is important to include as an important statistic. I want to use this to show how they are verified and their status. I think it’s important that people understand that they are getting health insurance and even though they are paying, without having a social security number, they are still doing it through a legal way.

"Low Cost Dental Clinic | Low Cost Dental Clinic." Penn Dental Medicine. March 23, 2018. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.penndentalmedicine.org/low-cost-dental-clinic/.

I am going to be including this source because I want to recommend this location. Personally, my parents have been going here for a while and they have told me that the fees that this dental clinic charges are not expensive. They have told me that they think it’s a very professional place and that everyone there is very kind and that it’s very cheap, considering that they don’t have any insurance.

Nolo. "Is An Immigration Lawyer Worth The Cost?" AllLaw.com. March 24, 2016. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.alllaw.com/articles/nolo/us-immigration/lawyer-worth-cost.html.

This source is very important to include because it talks about the different types of cases that may pertain to the cost for having to want a lawyer. I want to include this source because it’s talking about how, even though they may seem expensive, some of them are very helpful, especially in the case of undocumented people being detained. My main importance is that I want to focus on the Hispanic community, especially the undocumented, since it’s something that I can relate to because of family members. There’s a section on here that directly talks about how these lawyers work in order to determine if there’s a legitimate reason for their stay.

"Nonprofit-Health-Wellness-Latino Immigrant-Philadelphia." Puentes De Salud. Accessed January 24, 2019. http://www.puentesdesalud.org/

The reason why I chose to use this source is because in order to create my handbook, I need to include clinics where people without health insurance are accepted. I was recommended this place by my mother because a lot of people that she knows have been to this place and they don’t charge as much. This place is mainly for the Hispanic community, since the volunteers are trained to speak Spanish. The clinics main purpose is to challenge “embedded social inequalities and injustices.” From what I’ve heard, a lot of people say that everyone here is very kind and they don’t discriminate.

"Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Immigration Legal Aid & Pro Bono Services." Justia. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.justia.com/lawyers/immigration-law/pennsylvania/philadelphia/legal-aid-and-pro-bono-services.

This is a website that I’m going to include possibly in my handbook. There are locations that are on here and I plan on going to show up to each of these locations. I want to possibly hand them hypothetical situations and see how much they would charge someone who is undocumented. I want to use this source to include places that might be willing to reduce costs for these people. I also want to understand why it is that these practices are willing to help others, especially the less fortunate. I want to understand the different costs and then compare them in the end.

"Sliding Scale Fees." Wikipedia. August 21, 2018. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sliding_scale_fees.

When I was reading the majority of the articles were listing how in order to figure out how much the people that are undocumented should be charged, they base it off of a sliding fee scale. I was confused when reading what it is and how it is based on income because I don’t understand how this whole system works.

"U.S. Citizen Children Impacted by Immigration Enforcement." American Immigration Council. November 27, 2018. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/us-citizen-children-impacted-immigration-enforcement.

What people don’t realize is that the reason why I’m focusing on this capstone is because I want to inform people that if they don’t know their rights, then they might be deported. Therefore, I want to educate people of the negative outcomes/results if families were deported. This source talks about statistics that I can include on my potential website, about how many children have been left without a family member. This source is talking about previous studies have been conducted and their results that have occured. I want to use this source to provide as many current examples so that people can understand why this is important to support these communities.

"What Legal Rights Do Undocumented Immigrants Have? (With Lesson Plan)." KQED. March 29, 2017. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.kqed.org/lowdown/26358/what-legal-rights-do-undocumented-immigrants-have-with-lesson-plan.

This includes a video that I wasn’t sure how to cite but I also wanted to include the writing in it because it lists more rights that these undocumented people have. I think that this source is important to include because it will list out what people need to know when placed in this situation so that they can speak up for themselves.

"Why We Need Social Security." Princeton University. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.princeton.edu/~starr/articles/articles05/Starr-SocSec-2-05.htm.

The reason why I chose to use this source is because I want to know some background information in order to understand why it is that some clinics don’t accept people who don’t have any social security. I don’t understand why it is that some clinics enforce it very harshly, understanding that some people, for example those who are undocumented, don’t have the ability to apply for this. This source mainly talks about the background of how this system came to be and was created. This source is talking about the pros in having the social security, so I can include this to show how people see this as such a positive but there are those that don’t have the opportunity to get one.

Tyreek Speedwell: My Youtube Channel

Posted by Tyreek Speedwell in Capstone · Ames/Hirschfield · Wed on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 11:44 pm

For my capstone, my goal is to expand my passion of having fun with sports across social platforms/media. I made a Youtube channel and will be uploading videos. In each video, my peers and I will play sports games/challenge. The challenges will definitely showcase our humorous personalities as we perform theses games/challenges. They also help me make the edits to ensure that the videos are even more entertaining. Also, I will use social media such as my instagram account and informing others to post shoutouts on their social media accounts in order to promote the Youtube channel to get more viewers to watch my content. I’ve learned from this experience especially that it takes practice to get the videos the way I want to please the viewers who will like them. I’m very hopeful that the process of expanding this Youtube is a huge success for me in the long run since it is something I want to personally do even after high school.

Leo Cassel-Siskind Capstone

Posted by Leo Cassel-Siskind in Capstone · Ames/Hirschfield · Wed on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 8:40 pm

For the past six years, I have coached softball at Fairmount Sports Association (FSA). When choosing my Senior Capstone, I knew the greatest impact I could make on my community would be to expand on the work that I had already done with the league. Starting in the fall, I became commissioner of FSA’s intramural softball program. Every Saturday and Sunday from Labor Day to Thanksgiving I organized a range of clinics and games. Based on advice from fellow players and coaches and feedback from the girls I coached, I worked to improve my knowledge as a coach and how I communicated with people of different ages and skill levels. One of the biggest challenges I faced was finding replacements and keeping things running smoothly after I sustained a serious concussion in October and couldn’t coach for three weeks. I continued to coach this spring, working primarily with the Flash, a 10 to 12-year-old softball team which has made massive improvements in the first part of the season. I have also contributed both to the SLA softball team by helping coach practices and my sister’s FSA travel team by helping coach tournament games. Coaching softball at FSA has allowed me to give back to an organization that gave me so much in the nine years I played there. I have deepened my knowledge of the sport, improved my communication skills, and helped to improve the softball league in order to put it on an equal level as FSA’s baseball league.

“7 Great Reasons Why Exercise Matters.” Mayo Clinic, Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 14 Dec. 2018, www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/fitness/in-depth/exercise/art-20048389.

I’m using this as an introductory resource to show off the benefit of exercise and risks of not getting enough. Exercise is imperative to being both physically and mentally healthy in life and I am using this to show how important it is not only that they join sports leagues in the first place, but that they stick with them. I know of many friends that had a bad experience with a ineffective or mean coach and I want to balance my coaching style so that they want to quit, but enjoy their experience and want to continue with it.

“CDC | Physical Activity | Facts | Healthy Schools.” Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, www.cdc.gov/healthyschools/physicalactivity/facts.htm.

This source has many similarities to my first source, but shows a lot of the risks to both not being active and not taking proper caution when being active. You use calories when you’re running around and that means you have to eat not only more, but better. The risks to not being active are much worse and only minor precautions are necessary to make sure that one is going to be their safest playing sports. I want to be more informed about the benefits to playing and also prepared in case something does happen when I am coaching.

Interview with my baseball coach (not sure exactly how to cite this)**

My former baseball coach is a certified PIAA coach who has been coaching for the past 15 years. He has had a lot of experience working with kids of all ages and talent levels. By interviewing him I was able to get a first hand account of the best techniques and drills to help players get better. Even more importantly, he gave advice on how to communicate with players and their parents.

Interview with student (again, I don’t this can be cited)**

For my project I interviewed a friend of mine who has been active on both the SLA baseball and SLA basketball team (he has also been playing sports his entire life). I met with him to discuss his experiences with coaches and what methods of coaching have had the greatest impact on both his enjoyment of the sport and his skill.

Interview with someone I had previously coached (again, I don’t think this can be cited)**

For this source I’m going to use someone who actually is now a freshman at SLA. She and my sister were on the team that I originally coached five years ago and I have coached her more previously and she became an assistant coach on the 7-9 team that I coached in the spring of 2018. She can give me feedback (hopefully honest) on my coaching and will have different perspectives having been coached by me at different ages and working with me as an assistant coach. While again I haven’t been able to interview her yet, she’s been flexible about when we could meet.

Kids, especially as they become teenagers, and their parents are very often not easy to deal with. Kids don’t want to practice, want to play the position they want, and sometimes be on their phones in the dugout. Parents want to believe the best in their kids and sometimes take that mindset too far in that they want their kids to get opportunities that as the coach I may believe they aren’t ready for. This article gives me the official way to deal with these conflicts so that I can diffuse situations before they deteriorate. While I luckily have not had many bad incidents over the years they do and can always come up.

Klika, Author Brett Klika Contributor Brett. “Top 10 Reasons Children Should Exercise.” ACE, www.acefitness.org/education-and-resources/lifestyle/blog/6441/top-10-reasons-children-should-exercise.

What you do in your childhood is of course well known to have an effect on the rest of your life and the article shows many of the scientifically proven examples of that. It also shows the effects in the classroom and other parts of your life. One’s mental state is greatly affected by whether or not they get at least some exercise and again this article shows me some of the consequences to not doing that.

“What Makes a Good Coach? (for Teens).” Edited by D'Arcy Lyness, KidsHealth, The Nemours Foundation, Nov. 2015, kidshealth.org/en/teens/good-coach.html.

This source gives data taken from surveys on what the most important factors of a coach are. One of the keys to the source is that winning is supposed to be a secondary thought to team morale which is true. I personally agree with this as a coach, but I also believe that winning is part of a good team morale and the challenge is a good thing. Regardless, this information provides a very interesting and informative check on some of the practices that I’ve believed in. It also talked about tough but fair which is something I really do live by as a coach and overall it can provide a good balance to individual feedback that I get from other coaches and players.

“Effective Coaching: Improving Teacher Practice and Outcomes for All Learners.” National Center for Systematic Improvement, 2014, www.air.org/sites/default/files/NCSI_Effective-Coaching-Brief-508.pdf.

This source discusses how to find a balance of helping a player get better and also be nice and positive. While it may start out being the goal for every coach it becomes challenging when people don’t listen or simply continue to struggle. I think that knowing how to restrain yourself as they discuss in the article is essential as a coach because you are responsible (as it states in the article) for being the bigger person and calming down tougher things on the team. While I may have other similar sources this talks about you not as an individual coach but as being part of a greater coaching community.

“The Science of Coaching Work/Life Balance.” International Coach Federation, 7 Dec. 2017, coachfederation.org/blog/the-science-of-coaching-worklife-balance.

Coaching is challenging. I will be the first person to admit that, but it is also rewarding. I love doing it the whole time I am there, but there are other factors to contend with especially for someone that spends over 24 hours a week coaching and doing other volunteering in the spring. How to stay on top of everything has always been hard for me and I think this article teaches me how to take more responsibility for all of the things I need to do by telling stories of people who have been there before.

Chloe Hart Capstone

Posted by Chloe Hart in Capstone · Ames/Hirschfield · Wed on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 8:27 pm

In my Capstone I wanted to create a form of media that got people to look into mental health stigma. My overall goal was to give people an opportunity to look at the stigma around mental health without criticising people for the beliefs they may have previously had.  I personally believe that ignorance can’t be fought with anger and must be fought instead with the correct information. I chose to share this information in a short documentary titled “We As A Society.”  I chose to do my Capstone in a documentary-like format because it allowed me use people's experiences directly to impact the people watching. It also gave me an opportunity to share it more freely without charge.

Blogger, G. (2015, October 27). Learning With Documentary Films: Strategies to Engage Students. Retrieved from https://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/global_learning/2015/10/learning_with_documentary_films_strategies_to_engage_students.html

This article helped me to start on the project because I wasn’t originally sure what kind of form of media would be the best to present my information. After a lot of deciding and a few rejected ideas I decided on a form of film because of this article. While it’s not a fact based article, it was helpful in what I needed it for. It gave me the idea and showed me why it might actually be better for the final product that I wanted, which was to engage both younger and older people and teaching them about mental health stigma in an entertaining way.

Corrigan, P. (n.d.). How Stigma Interferes With Mental Health Care. Retrieved January 24, 2018, from http://www.academia.cat/files/425-8237-DOCUMENTHowstigmainterfereswithmentalhealthcare.pdf

This article explains the problems with having a stigma around mental health. Unlike a lot of other articles on similar topics it both has an easy to understand photo that explains the point and explains the information in a professional way. This article is very helpful because it not only explains the immediate problems but also the long term impact of having mental health so stigmatised in society. This is something that I want my documentary to have an impact towards. This document is also fact oriented rather than opinion based, using statistics to prove its points rather than other forms of persuasion.

Corrigan, Patrick. (2005). On the stigma of mental illness: Practical strategies for research and social change.. 10.1037/10887-000.

This book explains both the problem that society places upon people with mental health and how to start to reverse this stigma. It is an analysis on how to deal with both self stigma and societal expectation. Exploring both the causes along with the impacts everyday people make. While it backs up its information with facts and scientific studies, it does this in an easy to understand way similar to how I want my documentary to be laid out. Having a book like this can start to be a good template for how to gather the information im presenting.

C. (n.d.). What is Stigma? Retrieved January 24, 2019, from https://www.changeyourmindni.org/mental-health-and-stigma/what-is-stigma

Understanding the problem is the key to being able to fix it. This article explains the problems with stigma in an easy to digest way. Unlike other more complicated articles, this is a quick summary about what a stigma is defined as and real examples. While this article is less helpful for the documentary itself, it was a good starting point to help me understand the articles, books, and videos that have more complex and in depth information that will eventually be synthesized down to the documentary. It was also helpful between it gave me an example of what how to show the information in a way that people will be willing to pay attention.

The man being interviewed for this video is a man that has dealt with mental illness all of his life. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia. It's an interesting experience that a lot of people never get or even begin to understand, so while I’m not focusing on schizophrenia as my entire project it can be very helpful to understand other people's experience for many reasons. This video also lets me see what it looks like both video wise and in terms of what kind of questions and things I should include in my own interviews.

This article explains the problems with mental illness being stigmatised. Unlike previous articles, this one further explains on why people believe these different negative stereotypes.  This is important because in order to make an impact on people, you have to understand both what they believe and why they might hold this theory. This can further deepen my understanding of both stigma and the impact that is has on everyday people, but also the impact it has on society as a whole, even going as far as explaining the difference between stigma and discrimination and how they are interconnected but not interchangeable.

The information present in this article further explains the problems that plague society from the mental health perspective. This article however goes further into depth about the social aspects of the stigma, rather than the impact of the social basis on a single person, as other articles have done. It also goes further into depth about the difference between stereotypes and stigma.  This article also further supports the belief that education can help people's understanding of problems and how to fix them and states studies that further push this argument about how to further fix this issue.

TED. (n.d.). 12 talks on the struggle of mental health. Retrieved from https://www.ted.com/playlists/175/the_struggle_of_mental_health

These talks are helping to understand other people's perspective. While the scientific information is very helpful, this playlist also has videos that explain how to start a conversation about something like this, which is very important when you are talking about an important but often personal topic such as someone’s mental health.  I plan on trying to go into detail with a few peoples stories and how that has impacted that and its important that I understand how to do it right since a topic like this is often portrayed wrong and I don’t want to perpetuate bad stereotypes.

Trice, A. (2013, September 11). A Crash Course In Adobe Premiere Pro CC. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5TdzEe5TjI

While this isn’t information pertaining the the documentary itself, it allows me to better understand how to use the resources available to me through the SLA community. I don’t have as much experience with video editing as a whole and using this video, coupled with help from my fellow students and some of the video teachers, I should be able to learn a lot. This should help me get a kickstart on learning a new skill such as this. Learning this skill is a vital part of my project and the primary learning experience of the project.

Wellness, P. S. (2018, March 12). Teen Health: Mental Health. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1i9OktVsTWo

This video is a quick and simple explanation of teen mental health and why it matters. It's helpful as shorter version of what I want my documentary to look like. This allows me to better picture and write out the entire product. It is also a good source of a lot of statistics that draw your attention, which are important to try and get people listening to what you have to say, which I personally believe is the hardest part of creating a form of media. It's different than the other articles because of the video aspect. It's not just information, but information in a way I can emulate and learn from.

Ayala Silverman Capstone

Posted by Ayala Silverman in Capstone · Ames/Hirschfield · Wed on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 7:06 pm

For my capstone, I wanted to explore the importance of an author’s voice and what makes a literary work distinctive. I aimed to bring attention to the subtle details and nuances in the way authors write that gives their stories depth and character that differ from other authors. To do this, I researched how writing styles change over time and what components factor into making an author’s style unique. I wrote four short stories emulating four different authors’ styles using my research and initial idea. Instead of directly trying to copy the styles of writing, I took frequently used plot-lines and literary elements from each authors’ works and integrated it into my own writing. Throughout my writing process, I began to appreciate each authors’ writing style more and it also made me more aware of the distinctiveness of my own style.

https://asilvercapstone.weebly.com/

Annotated Bibliography

1. Brundage, David. 2019. "Elements Of Writing Style". Accessed January 24 2019.

A large part of what makes up an author’s distinct writing style is how they utilize literary elements. This article aims to explain these elements and how they should generally be used. It explains in depth what each element means and provides examples of how they’re used in writing. For my project, I will need to take notes on how the authors use these elements in their stories and I will use this article as a source for what stylistic choices to look for while reading. I believe this source is reliable because it was adapted from an English course text from Athabasca University by an academic author.

2. Dumas, Alexandre. 1844. The Count Of Monte Cristo.

“The Count of Monte Cristo” is a hefty novel by Alexandre Dumas, one of the authors I aim to emulate in my project. The story consists of a young man that is sabotaged by his business partners and goes to prison. Once out of prison, the man becomes involved in crime in order to get revenge against those who wronged him. I will be using this book for my project because it was written in a significantly different time period than the other novels I am emulating. This will give me a lot of content to compare how writing has changed over time, especially between the 1840s and the 2010s. I will also read through the brief introduction written by Richard Church in order to gain further understanding of Dumas and his novel. This is a credible source because it is a novel written by Dumas himself.

3. Famous Authors And Their Writing Styles - Craft Your Content". 2017. Craft Your Content. Accessed January 24 2019. https://www.craftyourcontent.com/famous-authors-writing-styles/.

This article delves into different famous authors and how and why they were so influential. It mentions many great writers from across all time periods and genres. It marks the importance of each authors’ unique writing style and how that difference made them so “revolutionary” (as the website kept referring to them). I won’t be using this source actively within my project, but instead more passively. The concept of unique writing styles based on time period, experiences, and the potential to change an environment through writing is something that I should keep in mind while emulating authors that have had a significant impact in the writing world. This is a credible source because it was written on a website made for writers and writing tips. (The author, while not well known to my knowledge, also makes sure that her name is both before and after the article.)

4. Harmetz, Aljean. 1987. "STEVE MARTIN REVISES 'CYRANO'". Nytimes.Com. Accessed January 25 2019. https://www.nytimes.com/1987/07/12/movies/steve-martin-revises-cyrano.html.

This article explains in detail the process that writer Steve Martin went through recreating the 19th-century play “Cyrano de Bergerac”. It starts from the beginning, with him drawing inspiration from the play to create a more modern, less tragic story. It also documented his struggles with writing and editing the script in order to be the best he believed it could. I have drawn both inspiration and insight from reading this article. I believe that my process will be somewhat similar to Martin’s even though I’m simply emulating instead of recreating in a new setting. In the article, Martin mentions that he would constantly scrap ideas and that a writer shouldn’t be afraid to start over -- this is important for me to remember so that I don’t get stuck with writer’s block. This is a reliable source because it was an interview of Steve Martin from the physical New York Times written in 1996.

5. "Moses And The Man Of Steel ". 2019. Psychology Today. Accessed January 25 2019. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-hero-in-you/201409/moses-and-the-man-steel.

Writing, especially in the narrative style, consists of embellishments and implementation of fantasy. This article first criticizes how humans tend to state things literally and accurately before commenting on human morality. This is connected to heroism throughout history where the article’s author compares the story of Moses to that of Superman. He draws comparisons between each story and of the main characters’ lives, explaining how the similarities were intentional so that Superman could be a source of comfort for people. This source does not comment on emulation, but it does write about a concept that is similar. The article gave me insight as to how I could potentially emulate themes or ideas from my chosen authors. This is a reliable source because it written by a professor and writer.

6. Mummini, Swathi. 2019. " ARTS IN NEW YORK CITY - West Side Story And Romeo And Juliet". Eportfolios.Macaulay.Cuny.Edu. Accessed January 25 2019. https://eportfolios.macaulay.cuny.edu/leval2009/2009/09/13/west-side-story-and-romeo-and-juliet/.

This article discusses the similarities between Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” and the movie “West Side Story”. The author describes the similar concepts and themes within both media and how “West Side Story” drew inspiration from the play. Similarly, the concept of forbidden love has been used across media for decades. I will be using this source because the process of recreating a story and emulating a story is pretty similar. Since I am emulating an author instead of using my own writing style, I will have to give a personal twist on the story itself. This source has given me insight on how to do so. This is a credible source because it was published by a student attending CUNY.

7. Paris, Ask, Submit Question, Submit Review, Hat TIPs, Get TIP, and Ivan Ross. 2017. "How Important Is An Author’S Writing Style?". Blogs.Tip.Duke.Edu. Accessed January 24 2019. https://blogs.tip.duke.edu/insights/2017/10/16/how-important-is-an-authors-writing-style/.

Writing style isn’t necessarily always about technique, but also about the author’s voice. An important part of narrative writing is the author’s voice and this article discusses this idea. It also provides examples of how different styles can affect the flow and meaning of a passage. I will be using this source as inspiration and an example for how my emulations should turn out. The article has given me insight on the idea that how I write should be the focus of the story, not necessarily what I write. This is a reliable source because it is a blog post made by members of Duke University.

8. R. R. Martin, George. 1996. A Game Of Thrones.

The book “A Game of Thrones” is the novel I chose to help me emulate George R. R. Martin. I’m not entirely sure what the book is about, as there are many different character lines to follow. However, it is filled with plenty of death, angst, and character building. I will be using this story in order to gain a concept of how to write similarly to R. R. Martin. For this author in particular, I will be paying close attention to his sentence structure and general flow of the story. This is a credible source because it’s written by the author that I am drawing inspiration from in my project.

9. Schwab, V. E. 2015. A Darker Shade Of Magic.

This novel is also one of the main books that I will be emulating in my project. This book and the two others listed have significant gaps in time between the dates they were published. This is so I can make note of the change in styles through history and over large spans of time. “A Darker Shade of Magic” follows two main characters: a young man yearning for freedom from his surrogate family and a young woman desperate to travel the world. This author will be slightly easier to emulate because of her more modern writing style (and while not extremely similar, it’s closer to my own style than the other novels). This is a reliable source because it is written by V. E. Schwab, an author I will be emulating.

10. "Writing Styles". 2019. Whs.Wsd.Wednet.Edu. Accessed January 24 2019. http://whs.wsd.wednet.edu/faculty/cloke/WritingStyles.html.

This website follows the most popular writing styles and topics that authors used throughout American history. It documents the form of writing in which the stories were transcribed and the eras that the style of writing was most used. I will use this website to compare the popular style of the era and the writing of the author from that time period. Using this website to check the author and their era, I will be able to more accurately document how styles might change over time (disregarding an author’s personal taste, to an extent). This is a reliable source because it was put together by an English teacher from Wenatchee High School.

Wes Matthews Capstone

Posted by Weston Matthews in Capstone · Ames/Hirschfield · Wed on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 12:48 am

As Philadelphia’s Youth Poet Laureate, I have been privileged enough to take on the responsibility of using poetry in active forms of community engagement. I have been in correspondence with many numerous organizations about performing and speaking at events, allowing me to connect with many parts of the city. For my capstone, I decided that I wanted to investigate the transformative power that poetry can assume in these urban communities. To do this, I facilitated a series of workshops across Philadelphia that reflect on the concepts of identity and belonging. In December, I held a meeting with the Laureate Board and discussed my intentions to run a workshop series in the Spring. I told them that I would handle promotion, facilitation, and venue inquiry. I also explained to them that my goal in doing the workshop was two-fold: for one, I wanted to cultivate young people’s confidence in their writing and ensure that their writing is worth sharing. Secondly, I wanted each workshop I conducted to involve deep self-reflection, hopefully helping some workshoppers come to a better understanding of who they are. As facilitator, I designed about 5 different workshop lessons, some designed for adolescents/adults audiences and others designed for younger children. By January, I had my schedule all worked out: I would do one workshops at YouthBuild Charter School in February, one the Ramonita Rodriguez Library and Queen Memorial Library respectively in March, one at the East Oak Lane Library in early April, and two at the Parkway Central LIbrary in mid-to-late April. Each workshop investigated a different aspect of identity somehow. For example, I had one lesson that encouraged students to critically analyze regret as a driving emotion in the human experience. I had another workshop lesson aimed for younger kids that asked students to write about all the things that they appreciate about their homes. Overall, each workshop was a success, as through this process I was able to connect with over 200 youth people throughout the city. Most importantly, it reminded me that poetry, for any age group, has the power to kindle the imagination in unique and mysterious ways, ways that sometimes we cannot even understand.

“ 6 Tips to Great Poetry Writing.” Jericho Writers, Jericho Writers, Apr. 2017,
jerichowriters.com/poetry-tips/.

This source offers advice to writers on improving and avoiding banality. It warns about dead metaphors, crutch words, archaic phrasing and more. I like it because it is simple to understand and each point seems directed to people are new to writing, and I know a lot of the people I get in workshops will be new to writing. Therefore, I want to give out the tips as a handout at the end of the workshop so that I know for sure that everybody leaves with some notes to guide them in the future. I also wish to establish that my workshops are spacing of communal learning through this.

admin February 15, 2012. “9 Modern and Contemporary Poets Everyone Can (And Should) Read.” Super Scholar, 20 Feb. 2012, superscholar.org/9-modern-and-contemporary-poets-everyone-can-and-should-read/.

As this source states, contemporary poetry has an unfair reputation for being boring and hard to understand. I want to combat that narrative in my capstone, and I think this source provides interesting counterpoints to it while also offering suggestions for modern poets who have gone overlooked. I figured I could use this both in my final analysis paper when I am commenting on the state of modern poetry and also at the end of every event in my series I could recommend the modern poets in the article to everyone who attended. In doing this, I hope that I can affirm that poetry is by no means dead and also encourage people to dig deep for rewarding art.

Hayden, Robert. “Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden.” Poetry Foundation, Liverlight Publishing Corporation, 1985, www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/46461/those-winter-sundays.

This is one of my favorite poems. It almost perfectly amalgamates the four temperaments of poetry and has been cited by numerous scholars as one of the best poems of all time. For this reason, I think it will go well with my four temperaments of poetry workshop. That is, I want to print out a copy of the poem and give one to each student so we can go through it together and annotate it, specifically taking note of how it uses story, music, structure, and imagination. I think it will work well for both experienced and inexperienced writers.

“How to Host an Event: 10 Key Tips for Success.” Billetto UK, billetto.co.uk/l/how-to-host-an-event. Web. Jan 24th, 2019.

I used this source to acquire tips for successful hosting, since I plan on hosting about 6-8 workshops and open mics in my capstone. My objective to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, though hosting is a nerve-wracking task. I ended up finding this source useful because it offers simple but proactive measures one can take in order to make the event the best it can possibly be. These measures include simple things such as social media sharing and helping guests navigate the space. One limitation of this source is that it is very general about what kind of event; it gives no specificity for my kind of event, or a series of events.

“Institute For Writing and Rhetoric.” Conducting Writing Workshops | Institute for Writing and Rhetoric, Regents of Dartmouth University, 9 Aug. 2015, writing-speech.dartmouth.edu/teaching/first-year-writing-pedagogies-methods-design/conducting-writing-workshops.

Perhaps one of the most important sources, this website provides insight on how to lead a successful workshop with developing writers. While I have a led a few workshops in the past, I must be prepared this time around to design a workshop that can cater to all writing levels and is both enjoyable and inspirational. This article employs tactics to make workshoppers feel included but also push them to better themselves. I selected this source because of how straightforward and clear it was in its approaches and for the fact that it may help be design a well-rounded workshop that works for all ages and skill levels.

Israel, Shel. “9 Tips on Conducting Great Interviews.” Forbes, Forbes Magazine, 19 Apr. 2012, www.forbes.com/sites/shelisrael/2012/04/14/8-tips-on-conducting-great-interviews/#9b4518356f17.

This source gives information on what makes a good interviewer. I selected this source because Forbes Magazine is a well-known entity in the business world, so I was sure they would offer interesting insights. One simple tip that resonated with me is “ask what you don’t know.” So often, I feel like people conduct interviews looking for a specific answer. In my interviews, I want to let the interviewee guide the course of the questions because it truly is supposed to be a serious study. Again, one limitation of this source is connected to one of the things I liked about it—it is aimed for a population of businesspeople. I don’t want my interviews to be businesslike, I want them to be more amicable and free-flowing.

Orr, Gregory. “Four Temperaments of Poetry.” AS CHILDREN TOGETHER, mypage.siu.edu/puglove/4.htm.

I plan to use this source as a basis for my first workshop at Youthbuild. It details the four temperaments of poetry, story, music, structure, and imagination, and how they all are necessary for crafting a well-rounded poem. I think this workshop would be helpful for beginning writers because it can help them more easily identify where their writing exceeds and falls short, and they can make adjustments accordingly. I received this workshop about 3 years ago and it certainly helped me to make improvement, so now I am hoping it can do the same for others. The flaw with the workshop is that it might come off as a bit confusing for those who have no experience with writing their own material.

Phillips, Carl. The Art of Daring: Risk, Restlessness, Imagination. Graywolf Press, 2014.

This source is one of my favorite books. Poet and essayist Carl Phillips investigates the imagination in the poetry landscape and how poetry reflects aspects of the human condition—such as nostalgia, restlessness, and desire. I like the advice and guidance this book has to offer for poets and I think it would be useful for a workshop. I want to workshop using one idea specifically—his coined term of the “blues strophe” poetic form because I feel like it is a simple concept for developing writers to understand but also a technique that would push their writing in a refined direction. This would prepare me for my workshops at Youthbuild.

“Poetry through the Ages.” Animals | Causes of Color, IDEA, Jan. 2008, www.webexhibits.org/poetry/home_movements.html.

This source outlines the major movements of poetry dating back to 7th century BC Ancient Greece. It covers famous periods such as the Metaphysical movement, Transcendentalism, and the Beat movement. This source will be referenced for my final research document for providing background on the different evolutions of poetry and how certain aspects of some movements persist in writing even to this day. One of my main objectives is to contravene the delusion that poetry is a dying art form, and to do this I feel like I must first establish what the pillars of the art are. Unfortunately, this source is missing some of the major movements that I wish to reference, particularly the Harlem Renaissance and the Proletarian movement, so I will do outside research on these.

“What Is Poetry.” Poetry.org, Wikipedia, Jan. 2005, www.poetry.org/whatis.htm.

This source provides a historical background on poetry, which I plan to use when writing my research paper on my topic. It is important for me to establish for the reader a general definition of poetry, and this source will certainly help me do that. Additionally, it could help me make the argument that, contrary to popular belief, poetry is still very much alive and is not a relic of the distant past. One limitation of this source is that, of course, it cannot provide a full history of the art form and it does not conform with my biases toward urban poetry.

For my Senior Capstone project, I decided to volunteer at a Family Emergency Center in West Philadelphia and work with an Organization in Texas called Human Coalition. If you don’t already know I grew up in a single mothers homes where everyday I saw the struggles my mom undertook just to provide for my sisters and I.  This factor in my life has been deeply rooted in me and has shaped the person I am today. So my mission was to bring awareness to Teen pregnancy, for there is a lot of controversy to this topic. At the Emergency center, I got to work closely with the young mom that lived there. I was able to connect with these women while offering support.  My mother who was a former residence of the women’s home came in and talk to them as well. She told her life stories, challenges of being in their shoes and how she overcame her obstacles. The whole meaning of my project is to really just bring awareness to these women. I wanna be able to take their stories and be the messengers that they trust that will convey their message into something positive. I wanna be that person to let them know that their life choices don’t define them. Me and my mother will be that embodiment of this.

  • Being the daughter of a teen mom, I noticed the struggle my mother  had when balancing working a job, taking care of 2 kids one her own and  trying to pursue an education for us all to have a better life. A lot of times mothers don’t have opportunity to go to school simply because of money. Their main focus isn’t just school now, it’s making sure their kids  have a roof over their head and something to eat. This sources talks about how some organizations help young mothers who want to continue an education.

  • This source will be used to bring awareness on the impact on Teen Pregnancy. It also includes social disadvantages that come along with being a young mother. Counties such as the UK and the United States have high rates of teenage pregnancies. Social disadvantage can be seen in  unemployment, poverty, discrimination, and educational level, and place of residence.

This is a very useful topic, that shares an important perspective showing correlations to the abandonment of pregnant teens.

  • My mother, sister, and I left the housing facility because after being on the waitlist for a couple months she had been accepted into Section 8. Section 8 isa housing assistance program run by the federal government. It was created to help low- income families afford decent safe and sanitary housing. To get into Section 8 an HA determines your eligibility based on : your annual gross income, whether you qualify in their requirements, and U.S citizenship or eligible immigration status.

For my Capstone project, I decided to work with Project Home/Hub of Hope to raise awareness of the plight of homelessness in the city of Philadelphia, and collect donations for the people that find themselves in such circumstances. I decided to do something for those people less fortunate than others. Over the summer of 2018, I interned at Philadelphia International Airport where I participated in a Sock Drive. We collected 600 pairs of socks from the people in the office. My co-workers and I went to the Hub of Hope Organization and gave out the socks. Seeing the smiles on people’s faces and how happy they were because of the donations really hit me hard. In that moment I felt humbled by their gratitude and happy to have been a part of such a humanitarian move. This inspired me to do something of my own Initiative. So When school started we were asked to think of what we were going to do for our Capstone Project.  I went to the Hub of Hope and approached Ms. Emily Hopkins about my idea for the Capstones project. She told me that it would be lovely if I were to do something like this and they needed hygiene products. Homeless people are in great need of hygiene products. So I agreed to collect the products through donations from family and friends. I was able to collect a large size Uhaul box which contained feminine products, oral products, body products as well as certain clothing items. On April 30th, I presented the Hub of Hope Organization with the donated items. On behalf of the Organization, the receptionist at Hub of Hope was truly grateful for the box of donations.

"Connect Program." Portland Rescue Mission. August 23, 2017. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.portlandrescuemission.org/homeless-services/connect/.

This is a website that I have found while researching about my capstone. This website gives me information about homelessness and how people can connect to other programs and organization so they can go get the help they need for whatever it that they need. One thing about this website is that they have requirements that they need to have in order to be in these programs. This website also helps how with getting involved so people can help really do something for the people. This website gives me information where in my website or slides that I can put for the people if someone needs it.

Feldman, Nina. "Expanded Hub of Hope Homeless Center Opening under Suburban Station." WHYY. January 31, 2018. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://whyy.org/articles/expanded-hub-hope-homeless-center-opening-suburban-station/.

This website has an article about the expanding of the project/hub of the home. The new homeless center is located in the suburban station. It’s a center that doesn't have a place to sleep over but it gives you coffee and let the people shower and give clothes so they can stay warm. This article really lets me get to know what this center is for and why it's built there. I think I really liked about the article is that it quoted people and their opinion ..“Instead of building fences and criminalizing homelessness, SEPTA and the city decided to repurpose a space to serve the men and women that are homeless,” within the information that I got I think this website is credible because it quotes people and it’s WHYY website which is one of the biggest kids channels so I think this would be credible. I will use this information to use it on the process paper.

"Homeless Shelter Directory." Kansas City Homeless Shelters and Services - Kansas City MO Homeless Shelters. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.homelessshelterdirectory.org/cgi-bin/id/city.cgi?city=philadelphia&state=PA.

This website is mostly for my website and the section where I’m going to put information where people can go and use the information if they need for anything or any unfortunate events that may happen or if someone is going through something you can recommend it. And this source is credible because it even link to any website or phone number and any address that they got the source from. One thing that I really like about this website is that if someone is in a unfortunate situation they can just go to this website and it will give all the information that you need and the requirement that you need to be in that program, which is really helpful.

Hoover, Sara. "New Homes for Those Struggling with Addiction to Open in Heart of Philly Opioid Crisis." WHYY. January 16, 2019. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://whyy.org/articles/new-homes-for-those-struggling-with-addiction-to-open-in-heart-of-philly-opioid-crisis/.

This website is also another article of the project home itself and not specifically about the suburban station but it's an overview of the whole project home and what they do and how they help the people with anything for example like the opioid crisis. It also talks about Kensington which is the biggest place that ha drug addicts, and as the people said the "needle park" because there are so many needles there lying around that has been used. It will help me with the process paper that I will be writing and really explain why I choose to work with them. I got a lot of information from this article, It quotes the phrases and says what the people think of their new idea. It’s also from WHYY is I would think it’s credible.

Michael Gainer@projecthome.org. "Homeless Memorial Day." Project HOME. December 19, 2018. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://projecthome.org/memorial.

This is another article that I plan to use for my proposal paper.. It give a lot of information about the homeless memorial that they have for the homeless people. The thing about project home is they are all over philadelphia so they have different event all the time for the people in need. This website really gives the information about the different event and where they have it and the important people that are going to come there and how other people can contribute and support their event for the people in need. This source is credible because it's the website of the organization that I’m working with so I know all the information that I use will be correct.

"StoryCorps: On Giving Back after 25 Years Homeless : Speakeasy." WHYY. November 24, 2016. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://whyy.org/articles/storycorps-on-giving-back-after-25-years-homeless/.

This is another article from WHYY about a man who was homeless for 25 years and he never went to middle school or high school so he didn't know how to read or write so he didn't know anything about any organization that helps the people in need. This website is basically an interview written and the person who has interviewed is a person who went to Science leadership academy and he was one of the people who a did a lot for the people and did protest all the time. He is a well respected person in our school so it’s my pleasure to have him has a primary source. The amount of information that I got from this I would say it’s credible and it’s quoted and I would definitely use this information for my process paper at the end.

Superadmin. "Housing." Project HOME. February 28, 2018. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://projecthome.org/our-work/housing.

This is a website that is from the project home themselves. It's a website that Helps people find housing and and programs that gives them a place to stay and have something that they can call home. I think it's a great website that helps people find a home. They have built over 802 units that they have built all over philadelphia And they have more coming that they are going to built. Their goal is to built 1000 units all over philadelphia. While reading this article I have found that how much this article can help someone. In my final presentation I will create a slide or a tab in the website where if someone need to they can go to this website and they will help someone if they need it which will be really helpful.

US Census Bureau. "Library." Census Bureau QuickFacts. September 12, 2018. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.census.gov/library/publications/2018/demo/p60-263.html.

This is a website that helps me figure out the facts about poverty. I want to put statistics in my presentation of how much our country lack of helping the people in need. The information that I provided in the website makes my presentation more exciting and helpful to people so they can see how much we are lacking. Within every penny that they give it will go somewhere and it will help someone. I will use this website to help me with statistics so the process paper itself can standout. I think this website is credible because it’s a government website and it credits its sources.

Sheila. "Pennies of Time." Pennies Of Time: Compassionate Problem Solvers. April 10, 2013. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://penniesoftime.com/act-of-kindness-care-kit-for-the-homeless/.

This is a website where it show the most important things that shelters  need for making a homeless kit that the people need. Like on the website one thing that I saw was that water bottles, and hygiene products  is one of the most essential thing that they can use and in need of donations there. It’s also a website where people can donate money for acts of kindness and it gives you tips on what’s a good essential kit would be, Which in my case is very helpful because i’m making hygiene kits for the homeless people. I think it’s credible because it’s someone's project that they have did once and it’s still out there for people to see and now i’m doing a project similar to them and it really makes me think about what how my project will be preceded in the future? Will someone see what I did just like how i’m looking at someone else's?

Winerman, Lea. “Helping Others, Helping Ourselves” No 11, Volume 37. Page 38. American Psychological Association, December 2006.

https://www.apa.org/monitor/dec06/helping.aspx

This is another website that I really like because it’s a website that tells everything about helping you self vs helping others and how it’s therapeutic to yourself and how it can relieve stress. Helping other gives you a joy in your heart that you did something good that will forever go on for the rest of your life that you did that. The five word that they define and how they improve that is really interesting: Values,Community concern. Esteem enhancement, Understanding, personal development. And it also goes deep into how organization can hold on to volunteer for a long term. I think this is really helpful to myself because it can remind me why i’m doing this and the benefits of it.  Also This is credible because it’s not in a website where they don’t put the sources and where they go the information from.

Kwan Hopkins Capstone - Politics: Learn, Create, Lead

Posted by Kwan Hopkins in Capstone · Ames/Hirschfield · Wed on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at 9:40 pm

Collage of leaders who have changed the course of politics; for better or for worse (from my presentation for the classes I taught).
Collage of leaders who have changed the course of politics; for better or for worse (from my presentation for the classes I taught).
My capstone took many turns and went through many transformations to turn into what it is now. Throughout the year, I knew that I wanted to help inform people and I knew that I wanted to spread a message. I think that I managed to accomplish that with this eventual design. I decided after months of research, talks, and personal deliberation that the best way to structure this senior project would be to use our school's missions statement "Learn. Create. Lead."

I learned more and more about the political process, elections we  as a nation soon will have to face, and am still probing the minds of some elected officials all over the country throughout the three levels of government. In an effort to create, I did what I know best: write. I managed to write letters to three elected officials with previous proposals attached to push for legislation that I support and to hear what they think. And finally, I managed to organize and lead a course educating my fellow seniors on political alignment, policy, and leadership spreading the message that they have to thoroughly get involved in politics if they want their voices heard.

Below, please feel free to look through some of my documents. The outline should have links to my three letters (along with the politician they were sent to and the similar piece of legislation I'm asking them to introduce/support) and the link to view the presentation I used to guide the classes I taught. Note on the bibliography, some of the annotations no longer apply as it was written before the final product was thought of. All sources, however, helped guide me and ought to be shared through this project still.
