Positivity @ SLA

Posted by Sarah Narvaez in Multi-Disciplinary Project · Downing/Martin · Wed on Friday, May 20, 2022 at 10:51 am

For my capstone, I chose to look into what makes experiences in SLA positive and how to create a positive community within SLA. I did this by doing various things throughout my high school years and then taking the time to reflect on them and ask myself these questions: What went right? What went not as expected? Do I believe it was beneficial to my overall goal in practice? Would I do it again? etc. This is just a sample of things I've done, to see the rest or some with more detail. Here's a link to my paper! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vFzfOT7aCjtKJMIhSP6OxKNONzuR--wLAk0RqutXIfA/edit?usp=sharing

Blue stream did and forever will hold a special place in my heart. I made efforts to create a video showing all the great, funny, and creative sides of Blue Stream. I spent all my time from April 2019 to June 2019 creating the blue stream video. It was roughly 8 minutes long. I gathered at least one person from each friend group in blue stream to collectively give everyone superlatives. It was my goal to make sure everyone felt included. That was the toughest part about making the video. The video as of today has been lost on my poor laptop. Lesser quality videos or I can try to actively retrieve them if requested.

I am having trouble actually submitting the video so the link will be at the bottom of my caption. This one is really short. I wanted to decorate SLA for the holidays! I remember freshman year some kids (I don’t know what club) made SLA look amazing for Halloween and I couldn’t do that for Halloween so winter break worked! This is just being said because I have a really cool video with the lights off decorated so I can include it.

I started SATing SLA Green stream African American history at the beginning of the year. It was the best experience working with children. I knew that I wanted to be a history teacher but being able to volunteer to help and work with these students was a blessing in itself. SATing was something that was very different from my other “deeds”. This was something that became very personal to me because as the year went on I started growing with them. They were at times too much for me and that’s really when I wasn’t only helping them but they began helping me. Green stream was such a challenging class to deal with at times and honestly, that was the most impactful thing I feel like I gained in this capstone. Being their SAT helped me figure out what kind of teacher I wanted to be and how I wanted to do it on my own terms. They were amazing and from what I asked some students, they gained as much as I did.

Mikkel´s Capstone

Mikkel's Capstone

Growing up I always wanted to solve problems and help others going through difficulties. Because of this, I decided I would use my Engineering Skills and design a solution that could help the homeless. At first, I had quite a few ideas about what I could create and I was pretty indecisive about what I wanted to make for my Capstone early on. However thanks to Mr.Kamal the Engineering teacher at SLA and Mrs.Hersch the director of homeless services I was able to narrow my ideas down and ultimately chose to Design a Building for the Homeless. I 3d modeled a ¨Safe House¨ that would work as a place for homeless people to stay if they missed curfew which is 8 pm for most homeless shelters. With the ¨Safe House¨, they will be able to get essential supplies and things they would need and be able to rest at a safe place for the night. I learned while going through this that we can help homeless people every day but that’s not going to end homelessness. The only true way to end homelessness is affordable housing. Housed people are not homeless.

Below is the 3d Model of the ¨Safe House¨ with each object being its own individual model

Amaya Lam Capstone

Posted by Amaya Lam in Multi-Disciplinary Project · Downing/Martin · Wed on Friday, May 13, 2022 at 11:08 am

We all consume digital media everyday, whether that be movies, shows, or simply social media posts about such content. Representation of different kinds is becoming more normalized as time passes, however it’s still important to recognize and analyze the possible subtext of representation. While many people are aware of LGBTQ+ and autism representation in media, I find that they are less aware of the often more abundant queer and autistic-coding in media, or do not know of it at all. For my Capstone, I wanted to create a duo-logy of video essays, with one focused on queer-coding and one focused on autistic-coding. Prior to this, I didn’t know exactly what went into making a video essay, and so researching the basics and what made an engaging and thoughtful video essay was my first step. I then wrote each essay and had it peer-edited, story-boarded each video with its respective writing, gathered my clips, and then edited it all together. I learned more about not only about my style of editing and creating a digital project, but I, myself, was also exposed to more films and TV shows that included queer and autistic-coding. My ultimate goal was to educate more people on these concepts and expose them to looking at media through a lens that they might have not considered before.

Each video essay had approximately four pages of storyboarding to plan out the visuals with the accompanying voiceover. A page from each one is pictured above. Not every aspect of the story boards came to fruition as I altered and changed some parts, but creating the storyboarding made assembling and sequencing all my video clips much easier.

To make my capstone accessible to anyone, it’s uploaded on Youtube and you can view them here:
